Mining may be defined as a general term for the working of valuable deposits of minerals, either organic or inorganic in origin, for their removal from the crust of the earth. Besides subsurface excavations, mining generically includes opencuts, clay pits and stone quarries, oil wells, sulphur wells, salt wells, placers, coal stripping, and the leaching of ore bodies. The origin of the word "mine" or "mining" is a matter of conjecture. A Celtic origin has been suggested since the Irish word mein, or the mwyn, meant ore, but it seems to have come from an olf French verb mineor, which meant to excavate, to make an underground passage as in the military appraoch to a fortification, sometimes called ?sapping.?

Cobalt consumption will increase during the next decade at an average rate at least equal that of nickel. In the past, use of cobalt has at times been curtailed by lack of availability or by high price. In the future, output of cobalt derived from copper ores and iron sulfides will continue to grow and output of cobalt from nickel ores will be greatly increased. There should therefore be an adequate supply of this metal at a reasonable price. Nickeliferous limonites constitute by far the largest known terrestrial reserves of cobalt. A process has been conceived, based upon selective reduction and aqueous chlorination for treatment of such ores. The proposed procedure permits good extraction of the ore's cobalt content, comparable to that of the nickel, and is adaptable to large-scale, automated unit operations. Chlorine leaching of the ore enhances its value as a potential source of iron and chromium. Over four thousand years ago, cobalt pigments were employed for decorative purposes in some glass and glazes of Egypt and Persia, and by 1000 B.C. they were widely used in the Middle East.' " However, prior to 1914, virtually no cobalt was produced as metal and ceramics remained the largest consumer of the element as oxide. During World War I cobalt-containing high-speed steels came into their own and the metal's merit in magnet steels was established.

RECENT attempts to produce secondary recrystalli-zation in high-purity iron have given conflicting results. Coulomb and Lacombe1'2 did not find it but Dunn and Walter3,4 did. The latter workers have stated that (100) [001] and/or (110) [001] orientations develop depending on the oxygen content of the annealing atmosphere. This Technical Note records results which are in agreement with Dunn and Walter in so far as it shows that secondary recrystallization can be produced in high-purity iron, but does not confirm that both types of orientation are obtainable. Similar observations have been made on chromium-iron and molybdenum-iron, although when this technique is used on 3 1/4 pct Si-Fe, both types are obtained as in the work of Dunn and alter.' Pure iron strip was cold-rolled from sintered compacts prepared from Carbonyl Iron Powder-Grade MCP of the International Nickel Co. (Mond) Ltd. The powder contains about 0.5 pct 0, 0.01 pct C, 0.004 pct N, (0.002 pct S, $0.005 pct Mg and Si, and 0.4 pct Ni—that is, it is substantially free from metallic impurities other than nickel, which is thought to be unimportant in the present work. The iron powder was (a) pressed at 25 tons per sq in. into blocks measuring 3 by 1 by 0.3 in., (b) deoxidized in hydrogen (dewpoint -60°C) by heating first at 350°C and then at 600° C until the dewpoint returned to -60°C at each temperature and (c) sintered in hydrogen (dewpoint -40°C) at 1350°C for 24 hr. (when dewpoint is referred to in this Note, it is the value as measured on the exit side of the furnace). The sintered compacts were cold-rolled to 1/8 in., annealed in hydrogen (dewpoint -60°C) at 1050°C for 12 hr and cold-rolled to 0.004, 0.002, and 0.001 in. with inter-anneals at 900°C for 5 hr and a final reduction of 50 pct. Final annealing of strip between alumina or silica plates at 875" to 900°C in hydrogen with dewpoints of -20°, -55" and -80°C produced secondary grains with the (100) in the rolling plane; the extent of secondary recrystallization was greatest when the dewpoint was -55°C. Annealing in a vacuum of 2 x 10"5 mm Hg at the same temperature produced no secondary recrystallization at all. With strip thicker than 0.002 in. very few secondary crystals developed whatever the conditions of annealing. Using a processing schedule somewhat similar to that described above, secondary recrystallization was produced in two bcc alloys of iron, viz. 80 pct Fe + 20 pct Cr and 96 pct Fe + 4 pct Mo. The former was reduced to final thicknesses of 0.001 to 0.004 in. and the latter to final thicknesses of 0.001 to 0.016 in. With the chromium-iron, a final anneal at 1250°C (found to be the most effective temperature for developing secondary crystals in the 0.004-in material) with a dewpoint of -25°C produced a greater degree of secondary recrystallization than with dewpoints of -50°C or -20°C. Secondary crystals developed in strips of all thicknesses from 0.001 to 0.004 in. Final annealing in vacuum produced no secondary crystals at all. For the molybdenum-iron a temperature of 1200°C was most effective. It was found that a dewpoint of -50°C during the final anneal gave better results than a dewpoint of -25 "C on the 0.008 in. material. Final annealing in vacuum gave slightly worse results than annealing in hydrogen with a dew-point of -50°C. Secondary crystals were developed in strips of all thicknesses up to 0.008 in. The experiments show that the extent of secondary recrystallization is a maximum for certain critical values of oxygen content of furnace atmosphere and annealing temperature, and that these values are different for different alloys. The thinner the material, the less critical these values are. The general conclusions are that secondary recrystallization can be obtained in high-purity iron, chromium-iron, and molybdenum-iron, using a processing schedule similar to that which will cause the phenomenon to take place in high purity 3 1/4 pct Si-Fe. Unlike the silicon-iron, however, only the (100) (0011-- orientation has been produced in these alloys, irrespective of the temperature of final annealing and the oxygen content of the furnace atmosphere. The resistivity, temperature coefficient of resistance, stability at 200°C, and structure of annealed Si-Cr films have been studied as a function of film cowposition. Colorimetric analyses of the films indicated 20 to 60 wt pct Cr over the resistivity range of 1 to 10-4 ohm-cm. Resistors were delinealed by photolithographic etching, contacted with aluminum, and mounted in TO-5 packages. The average temperature coefjicient of resistance, a, between 50" and 150°C is related empirically to the film resistivity, p, by a (ppm per °C) = -2900 - 1140 log p (ohm-cm). Near a resistivity of 3.5 x 10-3 ohm-ctn (30 at. pct Cr) , the temperature coefficient changes from positive to negative. The temperature at which the resistance maximum occurs increases with decreasing resistivity. The conduction mechanism between —196" and +360 C appears to have two components—an activated conduction dominating a1 lord chromium content and higher temperatures and a linearly temperature-dependent conduction dominating at high chromium content and low temperatures. Electron diffraction patterns showed the films to consist of Cr3Si and amorphous silicon. Resistors thicker than 150A typically drifted less than 0.6 pct after 5000 hr stor-age at 200°C. Resistors as thin as approxinzately 80°A that had a silicon overlayer showed similar stability. Such films had sheet resistivities of 10 kilohm per square and temperature coefficients near —600 ppm per "c. THIN-FILM resistors having sheet resistivities greater than 1 kilohm per square are required in many integrated circuit applications. A process for producing such resistors should be compatible with present circuit fabrication and packaging, including exposure to maximum temperatures of 300° to 570°C during contact alloying, die-attach, and ceramic package sealing. In addition, the resistors should have a low temperature coefficient of resistance and change less than 1 pct during storage at temperatures up to 200°C for 1000 hr or longer. Reports of work beginning in 1949 at Battelle Memorial Institute indicated that, among other materials, the silicides of chromium, Cr-Co, molybdenum, tantalum, and tungsten were worthy of further study as high-stability resistive films. Later work on Si-Cr films vacuum-deposited by flash evaporation from a tungsten boat1 led to the conclusion that Si-Cr had "excellent properties for development into high- stability ... resistive elements". More recently, Si-Cr films have been vacuum-deposited from a tantalum boat,2 from a BeO-coated tantalum boat,3 by flash evaporation from an electron-beam-heated tungsten Source,4 and by triode sputtering.5 This paper describes a study of Si-Cr films vacuum-deposited by electron-beam heating of Si-Cr alloys. Resistivity, temperature coefficient of resistance, stability at 200°C, and structure were studied as a function of film composition. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Film Deposition. Si-Cr sources were prepared by vacuum-melting pressed pellets of mixtures of powdered chromium (99.9 pct, -100 mesh, Lunex Co., Pleasant Valley, Iowa) and silicon (99.99 pct, -325 mesh, United Mineral and Chemical Co., New York). A permanent-magnet focused electron-beam gun having a water-cooled copper crucible was used to heat the pellet until complete melting occurred. The mixture was then kept molten for an additional 5 min. The alloy thus formed was used as the source material for Si-Cr film depositions using the same electron-beam gun. Pieces of semiconductor-grade silicon ingots were used as sources for silicon depositions. The films were deposited within a standard vacuum evaporator having an 18-in.-diam Pyrex bell jar, a liquid-nitrogen-cooled trap, and a Consolidated Vacuum Corp. 6-in. diffusion pump containing Dow Corning DC-705 pump fluid. SOTOPIC tracers have become an important aid in following the progress of chemical processes in the laboratory. It has recently been found possible to utilize a system of naturally existing iso-topic tracers to obtain information about the geological history of lead ores. Common lead, such as is found in lead deposits, is a mixture of four stable isotopes having atomic weights 204, 206, 207, and 208. Of these, the last three are identical with the lead isotopes produced as stable end products of the radioactive decays of uranium and thorium: the first, lead-204, is not known to be produced on the surface of the earth by any process. Since uranium and thorium Occur in the surface regions of the earth in amounts comparable with lead, and since the half-lives of uranium and thorium isotopes are of the same order as the age of the earth, they produce the radiogenic lead isotopes in amounts comparable to the amount of nonradiogenic lead present. Every significant exposure of a sample of lead to uranium and thorium will therefore lead to the permanent alteration of the lead isotope ratios in that sample. It is this unique property of lead that serves as a means of tracing the history of a lead sample in terms of its contacts with the radioactive elements. If lead from a lead mineral has been analyzed with a mass spectrometer, the measured isotope ratios are determined entirely by the isotope ratios of primeval lead, which are identical for all minerals, and by the particular history of the sample. It follows that for samples from any particular geological area, observed differences in the isotopic composition are enough to distinguish different geological histories. An illustration of the qualitative application of this statement is given in Table I by analyses of some galenas from the western Cordillera. Samples from deposits in Pre-Cambrian sediments have very different lead isotope ratios from those of the ores in the Paleozoic sediments. Although the two types are associated closely geographically, it is apparent that they have had quite different histories and have probably been emplaced at quite different times, as the ideas outlined in the following section suggest. Even when applied quantitatively, a lead isotope analysis can never indicate a unique history of any lead sample. However, it greatly restricts the choices available and combined with other geological and geochemical data can lead to a much better understanding of the genesis of lead ores. General Character of Lead Isotope Variations: Early isotopic analyses of common leads by Nierl showed that geologically younger leads were generally richer in isotopes of masses 206, 207, and 208, with respect to that of mass 204. This regularity of measured lead isotope ratios can be easily observed by plotting each of the ratios Pb207/Pbm and Pb205/ Pb204 against the ratio Pb206/Pb204. In both graphs the points lie scattered closely about a well defined mean curve. It was immediately supposed that this regularity resulted from the growth of all leads from a common primeval lead present at some time, To, early in the earth's history. Lead in the outer part of the earth would become continually enriched in the radiogenic isotopes as a result of the uranium and thorium intimately associated with it. The subsequent extraction of some of this lead and formation of a lead mineral free of the radioactive parents provide samples of lead existing in the earth at the time of mineralization, T. Younger leads in general will be richer in the radiogenic isotopes because they have been associated with uranium and thorium for a longer time. THE importance of having perfectly pure metals has led me to present to the Institute a record of some of the trials that have been made to obtain these metals, and also to show one of the largest specimens of extremely thin metal plate which has ever been made. The malleability of metals varies generally directly with their purity, and hence it is only with very pure metals that thin sheets can be obtained. The competition among different manufacturers has been so great at times as to lead to expensive and apparently useless experiments in obtaining in the first instance very thin sheets, and afterwards very large and thin sheets of metal, apparently with no other purpose than that of being able to say that they had produced the thinnest or the largest thin sheet that had ever been made. These experiments were at first confined exclusively to iron, their object being to show the great dexterity of manipulation, as well as the purity of the metal manufactured. They have since been extended to almost all metals by electrical action, and have gone far beyond the limits of what was possible with purely mechanical means. The processes which have been used are rolling or hammering, electrical deposition in a vacuum, and lastly, electrical deposition on plates, easily soluble in acids. The first and last of these methods have been known and practiced for a very long time, having been used to make thin sheets of almost all the metals. The other is of quite recent application. In the iron manufacture, the strife to produce these thin sheets was commenced in the year 1865, by the Sligo Iron Works writing to a firm in Birmingham, England, on a sheet of iron containing 270 square centimeters, and weighing only 4.469 grams. For some time this was considered to be the thinnest sheet iron that could be made. T. W. Booker & Co., of Cardiff, England, however, produced a few months afterward, a sheet of the same size, weighing only 4.015 grams. This was succeeded by one rolled by Neville and Everitt, of Llannelly, weighing only 3.174 grams. This was followed by one from Hallam, of Swansea, which was 283 square centimeters in size, and weighed but 2.979 grams; and this by one rolled by R. Wil-

Lufthansa flight 497 roared down the runway and climbed rapidly through the early morning mist hanging over Pudahuel airport and the city of Santiago, Chile, into the brilliant sunlight above the clouds. As the plane banked onto course for Lima, Peru, we got what was possibly our last look at the beautiful snowclad mountains that ring Santiago. To the northeast was the massive hump of Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Southern Hemisphere, wreathed in clouds and virtually looming over Rio Blanco, the new mine put into production by Cerro de Pasco just one short year before. Almost a thousand miles to the north lay the massive open pits of Chuquicamata and Exotica, and a little closer to Santiago the El Salvador mine. Behind to the southeast, clinging to the steep slopes of the Andes, was the large and awe-inspiring El Teniente mine at Braden. These mines, once the bastions of such companies as Anaconda and Kennecott, had a new owner-the Government of Chile. On the plane were a number of people who had spent a large part of their lives in Chile operating these mines and plants, and who now were suddenly faced with the necessity of starting new lives somewhere else. To them, this was their last look at the country which not too long ago was their home, a bittersweet moment of reminiscence and a time for questioning what the future held.

Tracer diffusion of Fe59 has been measured in the a-stabilized Fe-1.8 at. pet V alloy from 700° to 1500°C. The activation energies are obtained in both the presence and absence of magnetic order. Furthermore, it is established that diffusion in the alloy is identical to that in pure iron and consequently the values of Do and Q accurately represent the temperature dependence for self-diffusion. The purpose of this investigation is to obtain an accurate estimate of the temperature dependence for self-diffusion in bee iron in both the presence and absence of magnetic order, and, in so doing, to establish the temperature range of the magnetic effect.&apos;" As the temperature interval suitable for diffusion measurements is severely limited in both bee phases of pure iron because of the intervening fee ? phase, the experiments were performed on an a-stabilized alloy containing 1.8 at. pet V. This alloy is bee over the entire range from room temperature to the melting point. Although there have been several independent investigations of self-diffusion of iron in a, iron,1, 3-6 there still exists considerable disagreement regarding the values of Do and Q for the paramagnetic region. The two systematic studies of diffusion in 6 iron6, 7 previously reported are also only in fair agreement; but in view of the extremely small temperature range available for diffusion studies, i.e., 1390o to 1535oC, this is not surprising. It is comparatively easy to obtain accurate values of Do and Q for the a-stabilized alloy inasmuch as measurements can be made over the entire temperature range -700o to 1500°C. However, in order to assume that these same values apply to pure iron requires careful comparison of the data in the a, and 6 regions in both the alloy and pure iron. We have made several measurements in the appropriate temperature ranges and are unable to establish any systematic difference between the diffusion coefficients of iron in pure iron and in the alloy. We therefore conclude that the values obtained for the alloy are truly applicable to pure iron; the complete evidence favoring this conclusion will be discussed later in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL The experimental methods will be given here only in barest detail since they have been thoroughly de- scribed elsewhere.l, 7 The alloy was prepared by induction melting and chill casting under argon. Diffusion samples were machined from the ingot and annealed in hydrogen for several days at 900°C to give an average grain diameter of 1 to 2 mm. The penetration profiles of the tracer were established by a sectioning technique, the residual activity being counted after the removal of each section. The tracer used is Fe59 which emits two high-energy ? rays of 1.098 and 1.289 Mev, respectively; these were detected by a ? scintillation counter equipped with a pulse-height analyzer. For the measurements in the temperature range -700o to 1130°C the samples were vapor-plated with Fe59, encapsulated in quartz under vacuo, and annealed in resistance-heated furnaces which are controlled to ±1°C. The specimens diffused at higher temperatures are prepared as edge-welded couples, the two halves being separated by a thin washer of the alloy to prevent sintering. The diffusion anneal is then carried out by inductive heating under a dynamic vacuum. The temperature is monitored pyrometrically. RESULTS The diffusion coefficients are obtained from the penetration profiles in the usual way using the error-function complement relationship. The results over the entire temperature range are shown in Fig. 1. In the linear region, 900o < t > 1500°C the least mean squares (lms) values of the diffusion coefficients are given by D = 1.39 exp[-(56.5 ± 1) x 103/Rt] cm2/sec [l] The average departure of the measured diffusion coefficients from the values given by Eq. [1]In order to determine whether or not the slope is truly constant over the entire range from 900" to 1500°C, the data are arbitrarily divided into two groups, the first containing values between -900" and 1133°C and the second between -1133o and 1500°C. The lms values for the two groups are given by Eqs. [2] and [3]: D = 0.519 exp[-55.7 x 103 /RT](900° to 1133°C) cm2/sec [2] D = 1.45 exp[-56.7x103/RT] (1133° to 1500=C) cm2/sec [3] Thus, there is no significant difference between the high- and low-temperature segments of the linear region. This not only assures us of the consistency of the values obtained by induction heating as compared to those obtained from the resistance-heated

Scientific elite of the Minerals Beneficiation Div. assembled in Denver, Colo., September 17 to 20 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Froth Flotation in the United States of America. In his warm address of welcome at the opening luncheon, John W. Vanderwilt, President, Colorado School of Mines, recalled his experience in Bonanza which coincided with the early days of flotation. In those years the scientific and engineering aspects of the process which we know today were little understood and operating the flotation circuit was considered an "art." Luncheon Chairman H. L. McNeill caught the flavor of the old days in an anecdote which recalled the mill nightmares to many present with the agonized words, "Oh God, what&apos;s happened to the concentrate now!" It was an appropriate gesture when he called the names of some of the flotation greats for presentation to the assembly; and many an "artist" there was among them!
