Stress corrosion is defined and certain examples are illustrated. A number of test methods, to determine the resistance of materials to stress corrosion, are being developed at Wright Field. The criterion as to the validity of a method is stated. Three types of specimens and the method of stressing each type are described. Five different corrosive conditions are set forth. The results of tests to date, although too few for any general conclusions to be arrived at, are presented. The program for the continuation of the investigation is indicated. A bibliography is included. The development of the method of loading a cantilever-type specimen, so that a nearly constant stress at a large deflection may be realized, is presented as Appendix I.

DISCUSSION OF RESULTS The qualitative correlation between low-temperature ductility and prior high-temperature creep strain in nickel obtained in this investigation confirms the result obtained on high-purity brass by Chen and Machlin. However, the quantitative effect is much smaller in nickel. Comparison can be made on the basis of a prior high-temperature strain that is a certain percentage of the total high-temperature elongation to rupture. In the research of Chen and machlin, the prior high-temperature strain of 1/2 pct equaled 8.5 pct of the total high-temperature elongation at rupture. For nickel, in our experiments, 8.5 pct of 21.2 pct equals 1.8 pct. For eh = 1.8 pct, the loss in ductility in percent equals x 100 = b.5 pct. Schmatz IRON-aluminum alloys have gained much interest in the past few years for use as a base material for elevated-temperature alloys because of their excel- high-temperature strain the loss in low-temperature ductility is 8.5 pct for nickel as compared to 60 pct for pure a, brass. It is also interesting to note the observation that in nickel the low-temperature fractures, even at the most extreme high-temperature pre-strain, were partly trans crystalline and partly intercrystalline. In the case of a brass, these fractures were completely intercrystalline. According to the data on the percent of the grain boundary area that is cracked, at 22 pct high-temperature elongation, about 12.5 pct of the grain boundary area does not carry load. Thus, the inter-crack areas are carrying a stress that is about 11 pct higher than the nominal stress. A simple model predicts that the overall elongation, which is primarily the elongation in the bulk of the specimen, will correspond to the nominal stress when the stress in the intercrack area equals the tensile strength. Quantitatively this model predicts the equation The form of this equation will agree with that found if the strain-hardening exponent, n, equals unity. Actually this model is too gross an approximation to yield good quantitative results. The question naturally arises as to whether in ordinary hot-working, such as hot-rolling, intercrys-talline cracks are introduced that affect the low-temperature properties. It appears that the answer is that such a possibility cannot be overlooked, if the hot-working induces tensile stresses at temperatures above the equicohesive temperature and if the material tends to be notch sensitive at low temperature. On July 15, 16, and 17, 1918, through the good offices of Secretary Stoughton, and the courtesy of War Department officials, Columbia Section was able to secure a series of moving pictures which were presented under the auspices of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association.. The title was "The Way Out," representing the activities of individuals who had lost an arm, a leg, or both, yet whose apparent misfortunes were made the stepping stones to advancement in various human activities. The exhibitions were given at Natatorium Park in the evening, each of the three performances being attended by 1000 per-sons. Later the films were shipped to Kellogg, Idaho, where they were shown in the principal playhouse one evening to a full house. On July 31, 1918, the Columbia Section participated in the luncheon and other entertainment in honor of Alfred D. Flinn, Secretary of the Engineering Council, who made a trip through the country to meet different classes of engineers, members of the National Societies, for whom he had a message. The entertainment was under the auspices of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association, Mr. Peter Mogensen presiding. The luncheon was held in the Elizabethan Room, Davenport Hotel, at noon, 35 engineers being present, of whom about one-third were our members.

THE purpose of this investigation was to prepare high-purity iron-carbon alloys, to determine as precisely as possible the A3(GOS), the Acm(SE), and the A1(PSK) transformation temperatures in the meta-stable iron-iron carbide system (up to 1.4 per cent C), and to study the influence of carefully controlled and constant rates of heating and cooling (1/8 to 2° C. per minute) upon the transformation temperature and upon the resulting microstructure. Apart from the general metallurgical importance attending the completion of such a task, it will be noted that highly precise transformation temperatures are of interest and importance in the thermodynamic study of this system1. Several determinations of the iron-iron carbide diagram have been made. These suffer generally from the low purity of the alloys used, and from the application of methods of investigation of low sensitivity. Attempts to compare and weight the many data available in an effort to construct as accurate a diagram as possible have, in the main, been unsuccessful. In general, the wide differences in the results of different workers, the lack of complete analytical data, the omission of important details relating to the heat-treatment of the alloys, and the meager description of the methods of investigation applied, render such a process of averaging nearly meaningless. It may be seen from the summaries by Epstein2 and Körber and Oelsen1 that variations as great as 30° C. exist in the reported data on the A3 temperatures in iron-carbon alloys. For-tunately, the A3 temperature in pure iron is now known to be 910° C. ± 1° C.3 The best recent work on iron-carbon alloys is that of Esser4 on hypoeutectoid steels and that of Sato' on both hypoeutectoid and hyper-eutectoid steels.

Zinc sinter plant fume is roasted to selectively sulfate the cadmium. Water leaching of the roasted fume recovers about 80% of the contained cadmium and produces solutions containing about 40 grams per liter cadmium and 10 grams per liter zinc. The solution is treated with sodium bichromate for lead removal. Cadmium sponge, precipitated with zinc dust, is briquetted, melted, and cast into commercial shapes. The residue from the water leach is acid leached with waste acid, solubilizing the zinc and residual cadmium. Impure cadmium sponge, precipitated with zinc dust, is separated from solution with cyclones and dewatered in a centrifuge. Air-oxidation- acid leaching of the impure sponge resolubilizes the cadmium. The resulting solution is neutralized, clarified, and treated for cadmium recovery with the water leach solution. The residue from the leached fume is water-washed and recovered in a centrifuge-thickener circuit. This residue contains lead sulfate and significant quantities of gold and silver. Manpower requirements are held to a minimum by automating operations within the Leach Plant.

Since the outbreak of the European war, few problems of raw-material supply have commanded more nation-wide attention than potash. It is well known that before the war the domestic production of potash was an insignificant percentage of the imports. The average annual importation of raw potash salts for several years prior to 1914 was slightly over 300,000 net tons, and of other potash manure salts about 700,000 tons. The sudden and almost total cessation of these imports created a unique and stringent situation. Methods of recovering potash from feldspar and other native mineral sources, and reclamation from hitherto waste products, have received a marked impetus. Soaring prices have been a keen incentive to research and industrial development. Although several brief articles concerning the possibilities of potash recovery have appeared in recent trade journals, it still may be a matter of some surprise to the average technical mind that potash might be reclaimed as a profitable byproduct in the manufacture of pig iron. At the present time it may be of special interest to present some data, largely of a technical nature, on this subject. A fairly thorough search of the literature reveals a number of articles concerning salts of the alkali metals in the blast furnace. Many of them deal with the theoretical rôle of alkali cyanides in the furnace. Several discuss the probable effect of the alkalies on the furnace brickwork. Two or three ambitious patents have been granted for reclaiming potash or other products from blast-furnace gas. However, we have heard nothing further as to the practical application of these patents. Little literature of importance has appeared during the last 10 years concerning alkalies in blast-furnace practice, and I have discovered no record whatsoever as to the actual sale or commercial disposal of flue dust for its potash content until this was inaugurated in our plant at Bethlehem. The application of wet cleaning processes for the beneficiation of bituminous coal has created in some localities a problem in the recovery and disposal of fine solids in the washery water. The maximum allowable concentration of these solids in the washery circuit that is consistent with satisfactory operation of the cleaning units remains a controversial point. It has, however, been generally recognized for a number of years that some degree of control should be exerted over the concentration of such material. Early methods of control involved intermittent or continuous discharge of a portion of the plant slurry into near-by streams or settling ponds, and this persisted even after the adoption of settling tanks or cones. The practice is not always economical, for two reasons: first, because of the waste of coal, and, second, because it is sometimes difficult and expensive to obtain an adequate supply of water. The latter condition often is aggravated by chemical treatment of the make-up water that is necessary to prevent excessive corrosion of plant equipment. The modern approach to this problem has been the adoption of continuous thickening devices. However, because such equipment occupies considerable plant space and is somewhat expensive to construct, the practice of loading these thickeners beyond their rated capacity is widespread, therefore often the performance of such units is not altogether satisfactory. In recent years, European washeries have increased the rate of settling of the fine coal from the slurry by the addition of specially prepared starch solutions. These reagents cause flocculation of the solid particles and thereby increase the rate of sedimentation. The first important work on the flocculation and clarification of coal slurry was done by Henry, who developed the Henry process and used it successfully in Belgian preparation plants. Soon after the initiation in Belgium, the process was introduced into England, where subsequent investigation developed similar processes, which were successfully used in

To be born in the East, reared and educated in the West, to do graduate work in Germany, leading to the doctorate in metallurgy, and to wind up-for the time being at least-in the Middle West as head of one of the outstanding mining and engineering schools of the country, is a unique career. Curtis Laws Wilson, dean (and in most respects, president) of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy at Rolla, is a native of Baltimore. He came to Anaconda in 1918 and in due course was graduated from Montana School of Mines, with an exceptional record. In 1921, after experience in metallurgical research at Anaconda, he became instructor in metallurgy at his alma mater. Because of his ability as a teacher, he rose rapidly to head of the department after special work at Columbia in 1923-24. In 1927, Wilson was granted leave of absence to study physical metallurgy under the great Tammen at Goettingen, and returned with his doctorate to his work at Montana School of Mines. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a technique for locating and evaluating bedding plane cracks in mine roof by an air-injection and hot-film flow logging technique. It is ultrasensitive to cracks and is especially useful for detecting the early stage of crack development. Potential applications include: (1) correlation with roof sag measurements, (2) locating cracks for grouting, (3) comparison of mechanical and resin roof bolt effectiveness, and (4) possible delineation of the fracture zone to confirm the arch hypothesis. The required equipment is inexpensive and simple to operate.

INTRODUCTION The Philippines is endowed with mineral resources, much of which still remains unexploited. The country's known reserves, at least for the major mineral commodities, have increased every decade since the first major discoveries more than 80 years ago. Mining, therefore, naturally evolved as one of the pioneer industries and has ever since been a major factor in economic development. The Philippines has entered a new era in mineral resources development and management. One significant feature of this era is the degree to which the government is involved with the industry. In recent years, the state has increasingly encouraged the private sector to carry out detailed exploration aided by governmental contributions through extensive geological and geophysical surveys, fundamental researches and even indirect financial assistance in some specific areas. Significant changes in mineral resources development policies were brought about with the promulgation of Presidential Decree 463 or the Mineral Resources Development Decree of 1974. The Decree provides for a more rational system of administration and disposition of mineral lands to promote mineral resource exploration and exploitation. Various forms of incentives are provided. Foreign entities are allowed to participate in development through service contracts with leaseholders or with the government in the case of reserved areas. The thrust in mineral resources development has been focused on the base metals which as envisioned would provide the foundation for sound economic development. In recent years, however, major strides have been made to promote the exploitation of the non-traditionally produced commodities especially the non-metals. Development likewise point to the growing determination of the government and the private sector to expand benefits from mining. This is evident in efforts to promote downstream processing operations and to encourage investments in exploration, exploitation and mineral processing ventures. The integrated mineral resources development plan, therefore, proposes the vertical integration of mining extraction activities with the processing requirements of the metal-based manufacturing industries. While mining activities shall continue to be carved out by the private sector, the government shall influence the industry's direction by establishing legitimate goals to maximize benefits through an integrated approach giving due consideration to environmental protection and resource needs of future generations. STATUS OF MINERAL RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT Extent of Exploration Application of modem exploration tools and concepts complemented by intense infusion of foreign technology and rapid development of indigenous expertise have enabled the government jointly with the private sector to geologically explore vast grounds and to expand the country's known mineral resources. Approximately 93% of the country's total land area of 30 million hectares have been geologically mapped on at least 1:250,000 scale. Of the 93% total coverage, roughly 37.54% or 11.07 million hectares have been done on scales of 1:10,000 to 1:50,000 as shown in Figure I. Only 3.07% of the total coverage have been surveyed in detail. Land gravity surveys have been undertaken on over 45% of the total, while some 77,300 line km. of aeromagnetic surveys have been flown over 110,000 sq. km. of land area. Processing of data is almost complete. Total magnetic intensity and IGRF-corrected maps are available. Geological interpretation utilizing Landsat MSS imagery and low altitude aerial photography augmented by ground truthing have been undertaken in several large areas with very encouraging results. Beach and offshore mineral surveys were initiated in 1977 and have covered substantial areas in northwest and southeast Luzon and northeastern Mindanao. Highly promising areas for detrital magnetite, chromite, gold and some heavy minerals including ilmenite and titanium have been identified. In the petroleum sector, two offshore oilfields are currently producing from Miocene limestone reefs in Northwestern Palawan. Another field from the same area will be on stream in mid-1982.

Advances in numerical methods of analysis and computer technology during the past decade have brought many formerly intractable ground control problems within easy reach of present day graduate mining engineers. However, the new technology brings with it new problems. The identity of these problems are largely those arising from a lack of familiarity with the capabilities and limitations of the new technology. In this regard, the central problem in ground control planning is the calculation of ground motion associated with mining. The fundamentals of this problem leading to a form suitable for computer programming are therefore reviewed. Solution procedures in the broad sense including the gathering of input data and the interpretation of output are described. Computer program capabilities necessary for ground control analysis are discussed and the steps necessary to implement an analysis are outlined.

Hoover, an honored Vice-President of the Institute, on the occasion of his present temporary return to his native land, the cordial welcome of his colleagues, and their congratulations upon the noble work splendidly done by the Commission for Relief in Belgium of which he is the head. It is understood that a leading purpose of Mr. Hoover's visit to America at this time is the collection of additional funds, to be administered by his Commission in the care of the destitute children of Belgium. To this enterprise endorsed by both the belligerent parties, as well as inspired by the purest and tenderest sentiments of humanity, contributions are solicited from engineers, especially through an organization known as the "Belgian Kiddies Limited," which this Board, heartily approving its object and method, recommends to the consideration of the members of the Institute. INTRODUCTION SEVERAL years ago the writer was connected with the Mint and Assay Service of the Federal Government as Assistant Assayer at the-Salt Lake Assay Office. At that time cyanide bars formed approximately half of the bullion purchased by that office. Disagreement in valuation between the producer and the office was not infrequent and to a lesser extent between the Assay Office and the Mint, this latter issue being soon obviated, however, by adopting uniform methods of sampling the bars. A nice problem seemed to offer itself for research and the writer began a series of experiments which were soon terminated, however, by his going into other work, and which he regrets have not since been completed. The results attained may suggest lines of approach to this problem and are, therefore, offered in this article. Frederick P. Dewey, Assayer of the Mint Service, U. S. Treasury, has had abundant opportunity to study this phase of metallurgy, and has published several articles relative thereto.1 In the last article cited Dewey quotes analyses of cyanide bullion similar in content to that with which the writer worked, and which show some of the variations met with. In the discussion of these papers,2 comparison has been made in terms of copper bullion, but to the writer this seems of questionable value. Copper bullion may resemble silver bullion, but its similarity to, gold bullion with little or no silver content is another thing. The freezing-point diagram of Roozeboom, reproduced on page 881 of the discussion cited, is for the gold-silver series as stated. The production history of a gas-cap-drive reservoir was reproduced by calculations, and predictions were made for operations under primary depletion, pressure maintenance by gas injection, and pressure maintenance by water injection. Although the general equations used in this analysis have been available to the industry for a number of years, the procedure has not had extensive use because of the unusually large time requirements for developing numerical results. The use of digital computing equipment for processing the calculation work generally reduced the time usually required for an extensive analysis of this type. Calculation techniques were developed that were equally applicable for solving the gar-cap-drive problem, whether digital computing equipment or desk calculators are used. These techniques are outlined and the procedures are illustrated by the field problem. INTRODUCTION The analysis of a gas-cap-drive res-ervoir requires the simultaneous solution of the volumetric balance1 and displacement2 equations. Equations for the analysis of combination drive reservoirs were presented by Wooddy and Moscrip in a previous paper." These equations permit the evaluation of possible operating processes in order that the optimum method of pro- ducing the reservoir may be determined. Although these equations represent the basic technique known for the detailed analysis of gas-capdrive reservoirs, the calculation processes are quite complex and time consuming; hence, the procedure has not had extensive use. Recently, these equations were satisfactorily applied with the aid of a digital computer to investigate the completion history of a gas-cap-drive reservoir under the following operating methods: primary depletion, depletion under full pressure maintenance by gas injection, and depletion under full pressure maintenance by water injection. The use of digital computing equipment substantially reduced the time necessary for making the computations and permitted a more concise investigation of the reservoir's depletion history than was possible when the desk calculator was used. This more rigorous investigation also permitted a detailed analysis of the calculation procedures necessary in the solution of the gas-cap-drive problem. This paper outlines the procedure of analyzing a gas-cap-drive reservoir and illustrates the process with an actual field problem. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RESERVOIR ANALYZED Production in the field under consideration is obtained from a Frio formation of Oligocene age at a depth of approximately 5,740 ft sub-sea. The accumulation, which is bounded on the flanks by strand lines, is semirectangular in shape with gentle narrowing toward the base of the structure as shown by the sand limits and completion map in Fig. 1. The reservoir development indicates an oil column of 319 ft that is defined by gas-oil and oil-water contacts. Basic data relative to the characteristics of the formation and the formation fluids are shown in Table 1. The formation exhibits considerable shaliaess and thinning near the oil-water contact indicating that little or no benefit will be received from natural water influx. This is substantiated by the fact that wells completed near the original oil-water contact have not produced water. A sizeable gas cap is present; however, considerable faulting is in evidence, and it is believed that only a limited portion of the gas cap will aid in oil displacement and pressure maintenance. Although the reservoir was in an initial stage of depletion, it was believed that as soon as the equilibrium gas saturation in the oil zone was exceeded and a number of upstructure wells were invaded by the expanding gas cap, the resulting high gas-oil ratio production would rapidly dissipate the natural drive and lead to limited oil recoveries and inefficient reservoir operation. . RECENTLY two papers on the structure of eutectics were read before the British Institute of Metals, one by F. L. Brady1 and the other by A. Portevin.2 In the preparation of photomicrographs of laboratory specimens as illustrations for student work, and in connection with various researches; the writer has been working along the same line for some, time and, therefore, was much interested in the results given, especially those of Portevin. He has correlated the information on the subject and has outlined a broad scientific basis for future work along this line. It is largely with the idea-of adding something by way of illustration to the work already done that this paper is written. The eutectic is generally understood to mean the alloy having the lowest melting point of any alloy of the system, and in which the melt becomes supersaturated with reference to the two or more phases which, separate out simultaneously (or alternately). From the surface pattern, the eutectic means; a structure with no primary crystals. It is not always easy to get the exact eutectic composition in making any alloy; in fact, a slight range in composition may be expected and some of the coarser particles may be richer in either of the composing metals. Even when chemical analysis shows the right composition, differences in density of the pure metals may cause segregation, or. supercooling resulting from different crystallizing properties may give a surface pattern the appearance of being on one side of the eutectic point. However, the alloys on either side of the eutectic composition, showing primary crystals of one of the phases and the effect of the pro-eutectic form on the surface pattern of the eutectic make a very interesting study, which is slightly touched upon in this paper. The phases, or microconstituents, of a eutectic may be pure metals (Pb-Sb, Tl-Au), solid solutions (Cd-Zn), a pure metal and a solid solution; (Ag-Sn), or a pure metal or solid solution with an intermetallic compound (Sb-Mg, Sb-Cu, As-Cu, Bi-Te, etc.).

INTRODUCTION IN the iron-cobalt system there are several property-composition relationships of theoretical importance. The alloys are ferromagnetic exhibiting a maximum saturation at approximately 33 at. pct cobalt;1 the interatomic distances at room temperature show large positive deviations from Vegard's rule;2 and in the region of 50 at. pct cobalt there is an order-disorder transition which has a large effect on other properties. The thermal expansion data for the system have been reported3,4.5,6 only from room temperature to 100°C, and for this temperature range a minimum in coefficient in the region of 50 at. pct cobalt is well established. 3,4,6 This paper reports the expansion properties in the iron-cobalt system for temperatures from 30 to 850°C, shows the correlation with other physical properties, and proposes an explanation for the interrelation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thermal expansivities of iron-cobalt alloys in 10 pct steps in composition were determined from 30 to about 850°C. The major series of alloys was prepared by induction melting from Armco iron and cobalt rondelles with the addition of about 0.6 wt pct manganese. This series was supplemented by three compositions: high purity electrolytic iron, high purity electrolytic cobalt, and an alloy of 52.1 wt pct cobalt prepared from the high purity electrolytic iron and electrolytic cobalt by vacuum-melting. The compositions of both series of alloys are given in Table I. The specimens for measurement were prepared from the cast ingots by first hot-swaging followed in most instances by cold-swaging to 0.180-in. diam rod. Some alloys in the region of 50 pct cobalt, because of inherent cold-brittleness, were swaged hot to the final diameter. The expansion specimens were approximately 2 ½ in. long with flat-ground and polished ends. Before measurement they were annealed in hydrogen for r hr at 900°C. In the apparatus used for the thermal expansivity measurements (Fig I), a modification of that designed by Hidnert and Sweeney,7 the differential expansion between the specimen and vitreous silica was measured by a dial micrometer reading to 0.001 mm. An invar fixture supported the dial gauge, and this fixture, in turn, was connected to a split invar collar which supported the outer silica tube. A pyrex "T" was placed over the outer silica tube and was sealed to the invar collar by Apiezon Q sealing compound. A movable hollow vitreous silica rod which rested on top of the test specimen slid through a flexible rubber diaphragm cemented to the top of the pyrex "T." The specimen rested on a vitreous silica pedestal fused into the outer tube and was kept centered by a silica sleeve. A non-oxidizing atmosphere was obtained by admitting hydrogen into the
