A relatively small area in Malaya, about 200 miles long by 40 miles wide, is the most important source of tin in the world. Some tin is recovered in other parts of the peninsula. Of the tin mined, 98 pct is recovered from alluvial deposits. From 1935 to 1941 the average annual world production of tin was 190,000 tons. The average annual production from Malaya during the same period was 62,000 tons or about one third of the total. Other producing countries, in order of importance, were the Netherlands East Indies 34,000 tons, Bolivia 30,000, Belgian Congo, Nigeria, Siam, Burma, China, and a few others with smaller amounts. The serious shortage of tin during the war period was due to the fact that the Japanese were occupying Malaya, Netherlands East Indies, Siam, Burma, and China which, together, formerly were producing 65 pct of the world supply. Because of the importance of tin in the world economy, and because of the fact that little is generally known in this country regarding the methods of recovering the tin in Malaya, it is believed that a short description of the industry, as carried on there, may be of interest to many of the readers. In addition you may be interested in the effect of the Japanese occupation, subsequent recovery of the properties and conditions existing at that time. The Malay Peninsula lies at the southeast tip of Asia. Singapore, a British colony, is situated on a small island at the southern end of the peninsula. It is a city of nearly a million population, an important world port, the site of a large British naval base and of one of the tin smelters. The Federation of Malaya consists of nine states, plus Penang, Malacca, and other small areas formerly part of the Straits Settlements, and it now covers the entire peninsula. The civil administration is controlled by the British. A constitution was adopted recently after reaching agreement with the Malay Sultans of the various states, who retain control of religious matters. The Capital is at Kuala Lumpur, a city of about 200,000 population, 250 miles north of Singapore and about half way to Penang. The country covers an area of 51,000 square miles, an area about equal to that of Florida and about one third that of California. It has a population of about seven million consisting of Malays, Chinese, East Indians, and a relatively small number of Europeans. The principal products are tin and rubber. There are over three million acres of planted rubber. The country is not self-supporting agriculturally as about one third of the necessary food supplies is imported. Rice is the principal food of the Asiatic population and some of the recent unrest is caused by a shortage of rice and the consequent high price. Good highways have been built through the settled part of the country. A railway, Government owned, extends from Singapore northward through the entire peninsula. The climate is tropical but health conditions are good for a tropical country. The letter of resignation follows : Gentlemen: About two years ago, I indicated to the President and some members of the Board my belief that the office of Secretary of the Institute should not be a permanent one. It is my observation of events, not only in our own Institute, but also in several sister societies, that too long a tenure of office by the Secretary inevitably leads to a situation which is not good either for him or for the society. After submitting this in writing to the Directors on February 17, 1920, I was overpersuaded by members of the Board to defer resignation until a more convenient time for the

The users of barite in the United States derive their supply partly from the domestic production and partly from the imports from foreign countries. According to the Mineral Resource division of the U. S. Geological Survey, the domestic production of barite in 1913 was 45,298 short tons, valued at $156,275, or $3.45 a ton, and the imports of crude barite were 35,840 short tons, valued at $61,409, or $1.71 a ton. These figures clearly show a decided advantage in cost of the foreign over the domestic barite to users in the United States. The difference in cost is the only advantage to the consumer of foreign barite, for there are large reserves of the mineral in the United States of good grade. The production of many of the operating mines is capable of decided increase, and it is believed that the operating mines together with the large reserves of undeveloped deposits of barite are entirely adequate to meet the demands of the users in the United States. Deposits of barite are known in California, Idaho, Nevada, and Alaska, but most of them are undeveloped because there is, apparently, no market for the material in that region. The domestic production is derived from Missouri .and the Appalachian States, the greater part being obtained from Missouri. Following the outbreak of war in Europe many users of foreign barite in the United States have been forced to seek their supplies at home. It seems opportune at this time, therefore, that a general review be given of the barite industry in the Appalachian States, one of the two areas from which the domestic supply of the mineral is derived, and that attention be directed to the undeveloped deposits in the region. Briefly, then, this paper reviews the barite industry in the Appalachian States, and describes the occurrence, preparation, and uses of the mineral. General Character Barite, known commercially as barytes or heavy spar, is barium sulphate (Baso4), containing when pure BaO, 65.7 per cent., and S03, 34.3 per cent. This is particularly needed for the natural potential log. The conventional explanations are based on the phenomena of electrofiltration and electro-osmosis. However, experimental data show that they fail to give a basis that is quantitatively sound. Moreover, they lead to interpretations of details of electrical logs that are erroneous. It was found experimentally that when a plug of shale is placed in a chain of dissimilar electrolytes, a current flow results. Experiments on oil-well cores and fluids similar to those existing in wells show that potentials are set up which are in reasonable agreement with those encountered in electrical logging. Doubtless other sources of potential are important but this explanation not only accounts for much of the potential but also clarifies some fairly familiar examples of misinterpretations. Introduction The extraordinary value of electrical well logging as a tool for petroleum engineers and geologists is now so uni- versally recognized that it is not necessary to point out the ways in which it can be useful. It is sufficient to mention only the saving that has resulted from the elimination of much coring that would have been necessary under former practices and the considerable additions to reserves resulting from the discovery of sands missed in coring. Paradoxically, the very remarkable success that has resulted from the application of electrical logging to correlation and completion problems has cost some of its most consistent users dearly.' The fact that some operators have placed unwarranted faith in erroneous interpretations of electrical logs does not reduce the value of the logs. It should, however, make one pause long enough to ask why experienced users should be misled. The answer to this question is not hard to find. In nearly every case, the fault has been oversimplification. This is illustrated very aptly by the familiar interpretation and theory of the natural potential log. Recording and Interpreting Logs The natural potential log is extremely simple to record precisely enough for all present-day uses. One needs only an electrode, a cable to lower the electrode through the drilling mud, a recording meter and a surface ground connection. The electrode can be elaborate but need not be. A simple brass rod 2 in, in diameter and 2 or 3 in. long is quite satisfactory. The cable need not be particularly well insulated, nor need it have a very low resistance. A theoretical development is presented which reformulates Fick's first law for diffusion in the solid state. The diffusion flux of component i in a multi-component system, Ji, is related to its local concentration, ci, and local jump frequency, ri : where a is a geometric factor and d is the jump distance. The product, ciri , is defined as the local concentration of atomic jumps for component i. The analog to Fick's second law is also derived. A solution to this equation is presented, which permits the experimental determination of the variation of atom jump frequency with composition in multicomponent systems. HISTORICALLY, the description of diffusion in the solid state has been presumed to be best approached as an application of more general diffusion laws, known as the phenomenological equations. These equations relate the flux, Ji, of the various components, expressed in atoms, grams, or volume, to the driving force involved, expressed as either a compositional or chemical potential gradient, sumption that the flux is simply proportional to the driving force is the foundation of this approach. The phenomenological equations take the form: where the concentration gradients are assumed to be the driving force, and: if the chemical potential gradient is taken as the driving force. The coefficients Dij in Eq. [1.] are the "diffusion coefficients"; the elements of the corresponding matrix in Eq. [2], the Mij, are called the "mobilities". Eqs. [I] and [2] may be considered to be definitions of these phenomenological coefficients. A formidable body of literature has been generated about these equations; this literature dates back to their original formulation for the simplest case of binary diffusion in a fluid, by Adolf Fick, in 1855.' This description has been shown to be self-consistent. However, the "constants of proportionality", the Dij or ,Mij, are not constant: they vary with composition in all but the simplest systems. Even in the case of tracer diffusion, wherein it can be shown that the diffusion coefficient is constant, the mobility, which is considered in irreversible thermodynamics to be the more physically meaningful quantity, varies with the concentration of the tracer involved.' In more complex systems, it is necessary to evaluate the entire matrix of phenomenological coefficients, as a function of composition, in order to describe diffusion locally. Further, in order to determine this matrix experimentally, it is necessary to produce diffusion couples that have different sequences of compositions; the matrix may be evaluated only at points where these "composition paths" cross.* Finally, and perhaps most

Lattice rotations occurring on the tension and compression sides during the bending of molybdenum single crystals at room temperature were followed in detail. Observations were also made concerning crystallite rotations and slip traces. &apos;The results indicated the participation of (110) as slip planes and the<111>as slip directions. Crystallite fragmentation during bending was also noted. EVERAL investigations have been conducted on pure bending of face-centered cubic metals.&apos;-" Structural changes as a result of "bend-gliding," and the importance of bending and constraints during conditions of axial stressing, have been noted.&apos;," It was evident that the mechanism by which the bending deformation occurs is more complex than the case of simple shear. Studies of the bending of body-centered cubic metals from the aspect of the crystallographic mechanism appear to be lacking. Molybdenum single crystals therefore were subjected to deformation by bending in order to determine the reaction of the body-centered cubic lattice to bending stresses. It might be expected for the bending of single crystals that lattice rotation as represented by the axis of compression would proceed toward the pole of the active slip plane and that rotation of the tensile stress axis should indicate the slip direction.&apos; It was believed therefore that a study of the tension and compression sides of bent molybdenum single crystals should give data concerning the operative slip system. Specific problems which are pertinent to the overall picture of plastic deformation were also investigated, e.g., whether the constraints offered by pure bending give rise to the deformation band, and also the nature of the asterism occurring on the tension and compression sides during the stages of deformation. Experimental Procedure Eight single crystal specimens were grown from sintered molybdenum rods 143 in. diameter using the method described previously.6 The purity of this material was reported as 99.9 pct as described elsewhere.&apos; The specimens were % to 1/10 in. in diameter x 7 in. long, with single crystals approximately 1 to 2 in. in length occupying the entire center sections of each specimen. The specimens were elec-trolytically polished using an electrolyte of 300 cc methyl alcohol, 60 cc H2SO4, 130 cc HCl, and a current density of 4 amp per sq in. Each specimen was then loaded in a bending apparatus similar to that used by Yen and Hibbard,&apos; as shown in Fig. 1. The load was applied by means of a spring and screw arrangement through four ball-bearing surfaces set 1.5 in. apart. Either the inner two bearings or the outer two (A, B, Fig. 1) were attached to a movable steel plate (D) through which the load was transmitted. Two-phase diffusion couples have been used to simulate the growth of proeutectoid ferrite in ternary Fe-C-Mn austenites. It has been shown, theoretically and expermentally, that the results fall into two classes: a high-super saturation class in which the major role of manganese additions is to influence the boundary conditions for carbon diffusion; and a low-supersaturation class in which the partition of manganese is required. In the latter case, a drastic inhibition of the reaction rate is to be expected. As an aid to the kinetic analysis, a portion of the iron-rich comer of the Fe-C-Mn constitution diagvam has been determined. The conclusions drawn from this work have a direct bearing on the kinetics of the grain boundary ferrite precipitation reaction and thus yield insight into the manner in which alloying elements can influence the rate of austenite-decomposition reactions. THE role of alloying elements in the austenite-decomposition reactions has provoked considerable interest, since it is apparent that an understanding of this phenomenon will yield insight into the harden-ability problem. In the present investigation, attention is focused upon the proeutectoid-ferrite transformation in the system Fe-C-Mn, and upon the manner in which manganese additions affect the growth rate of ferrite. When hypoeutectoid austenite is supersaturated, the ferrite first formed usually exhibits two distinct types of morphology. At low super saturations, grain boundary layers grow into the austenite grains with an approximately planar interface, and usually possess at least one incoherent phase boundary. At high supersaturations, Widmanstiitten plates appear, which bear an orientation relationship&apos; to the parent austenite. In this case, there is a chance of partial lattice matching along the sides of the plates and an attendant semicoherent interface structure. Purdy and Kirkaldy2 have used a two-phase binary Fe-C diffusion couple to demonstrate that carbon volume diffusion controls the incoherent reaction, while Rouze and rube,&apos; using thermionic-emission microscopy, have shown that the thickening of Widmanstatten ferrite plates is appreciably slower than expected for carbon-diffusion control. This suggests that the plates are bounded by partially coherent, low-mobility interfaces. The redistribution of alloying elements during transformation has been the object of studies by Aaronson4 and owmman,5 who have shown that no alloy partition occurs during ferrite precipitation in the systems Fe-C-Cr and Fe-C-Mo, respectively. More recently, Aaronson et al.6 have shown that some manganese partition occurs at low super-saturations in the system Fe-C-Mn, but that no partition occurs at higher super saturations. Pickle-simer et al.7 observed that no manganese partition occurred during the early stages of the pearlite transformation in a manganese steel, and concluded that volume diffusion of the alloying element is not the rate-deter mining factor. The diffusion coefficients pertinent to this investigation have been measured by Wells, Batz, and Mehl8 (carbon in austenite), R. P. smith9 (carbon in ferrite), Wells and Mehl 10 (manganese in austenite), and Kirkaldy and Purdy11 (diffusion of carbon on a manganese gradient in austenite). Kurdjumov 12 has shown that the diffusivity of substitutional elements in ternary austenites up-quenched from martensite may be greatly enhanced, due, apparently, to the presence of a persistent defect structure. The recent work of Krauss 19 showing high densities of tangled dislocations in reversed Fe-Ni martensite is in agreement with this conception. THEORETICAL Diffusion in ternary or higher-order systems may be described with the aid of Onsager&apos;s extenbion of Fick&apos;s first law,14 in which the flux of each of the n components is assumed to be a linear function of all concentration gradients:

The problem of selection of the active slip systems for a crystal undergoing an arbitrary strain has been analyzed by Taylor and by Bishop and Hill. The Taylor analysis is based on a principle of&apos; virtual work, and involves finding, among numerous cotnbinalions of slip systems that satisfy the imposed strain, the combination in which the sum of the glide shears is a minimum. Previously, Taylor has treated the case of axisymmetric flow when slip occurs on (111)(110) (or {110)(111)) systems only. His analysis has now been extended by computer methods to the cases of slip on {112}(111) and {123)(111) systerns and of mixed slip on {110), {1 12), and (123) planes with a common (111) slip direction, all of which are important in the deformation of bcc crystals. The results are computer-plotted as contours of the ratio of the floe strength to the critical resolved slzea-r stress for slip, for axial orientations distributed throughout the standard stereographic triangle. Implications of the computer results to texture develop,merit, texture hardening, and dislocation theories oj work hardening are discussed. WhEN a single crystal is extended in the usual tension test, the lateral dimensions can change relatively freely. In this case, the glide shear produced by slip on a single slip system is sufficient to accommodate the (tensile) deformation. Since slip is governed by a critical resolved shear stress law (the Schmid law&apos;), the single active slip system is one for which the stress, resolved on the slip plane and in the slip direction, is the highest among the several equivalent slip systems. This amounts to saying that a value M = U/t = y/~ is a minimum among the equivalent systems, where M is the inverse of the familiar Schmid factor (a and E refer to tensile stress and strain, and T and y refer to resolved shear stress and shear strain). A grain embedded in a polycrystalline aggregate, on the other hand, cannot freely change its shape due to constraint from its neighbors. In this case, slip from five independent slip systems (to accommodate five independent strains) is generally required.&apos; Based on the principle of virtual work and assuming that the critical resolved shear stress for slip is the same for all systems, Taylor hypothesized that, among all combinations of (five) slip systems which are capable of accommodating the imposed strain, the active combination is that one for which the sum of the absolute values of the glide shears is a minimum. Again, this is equivalent to saying that the value of M = CjlyjI/ is a minimum, in analogy to the single slip case. Taylor aminimum,analyzed the case of {111)(110) slip for fcc metals, and applied the analysis to crystals undergoing axisymmetric flow, that is, the same macroscopic shape change as the poly crystalline aggregate under uniaxial tension (or compression). For the twelve equivalent {111}( 110) slip systems, there are 384 independent combinations of selecting five systems to satisfy the five independent linear equations of imposed strain.4 Taylor calculated the value of M for each combination* and obtained the active com- *A number of the independent combinations were omitted from consideration in Taylor&apos;s original work (see Ref. 5). bination (minimum M) for a number of axial orientations distributed throughout the standard stereographic triangle. Later work by Bishop and Hill*&apos;8 showed that Taylor&apos;s least-shear hypothesis was equivalent to a maximum work principle which they advanced. Using the simplified Bishop and Hill method for {111)(110) slip, Hosford and Backofen&apos; obtained detailed contours of constant minimum M for the same axisymmetric flow case. In contrast to {111}(110) slip in fcc metals, slip in bcc metals is generally described as occurring on {ll~)(lll), {112)(111), {123) (111) systems as well as mixed slip composed of all three. Since the direction cosines of the slip plane normal and the slip direction enter as a product in the Taylor analysis, the Taylor solutions of ,M for {110)(111) slip are identical to those for { 111} 110) slip. The other three cases of slip, however, have not been solved. In view of the numerous combinations of slip systems involved in the calculations, the Taylor analysis is clearly oriented toward computerized solutions. THE TAYLOR ANALYSIS In order to obtain the active combination of (five) slip systems by solving for the minimum value of M = we first express the (small) strain components E,, with respect to the cubic axes 1, 2, 3 ([loo], [010], [001], respectively) of the crystal, in terms of the sum of the glide shears yj from slip systems j: where n, and n,j refer to direction cosines of the slip plane normal, and dri and dsi to direction cosines of the slip direction, of slip system j, all referred to the cubic axes. In practice, the strain components are given with respect to the specimen axes X, y, 2. These components are readily converted to ers through the tensor transformation where irk and 1,~ are the direction cosines between the two sets of coordinate axes.

OF all the metals in the war program the demand for and the production of magnesium have increased percentagewise the most. In the prewar year 1939 the production was 3350 tons. The war program, twice expanded, now provides for nearly one hundred times that amount annually. The goal announced by the War Production Board in February 1942 was 362,500 tons per year. Be- cause of the development during the year of satisfactory types of incendiary bombs other than magnesium this objective has been somewhat reduced but the capacity of the plants already built or under construction will be huge. The Aluminum and Magnesium Division of the W.P.B. has had the responsibility of planning and implementing this expansion and of providing fabricating facilities as well for this greatly increased tonnage of magnesium ingot.

As already announced in the January Bulletin, this publication will be issued during the coming year monthly instead of bi-monthly as heretofore. Among other reasons for this change, it is desired to effect thereby the earlier transmission to members of important papers, lists of candidates for membership, and other items of timely information. Spokane Meeting and Excursions. Further details of the 97th meeting of the Institute have been sent to members in the Circular of May 8, 1909. The list of those intending to go on the excursion is filling up, and since preference in position of state-room or berth is given in the order of application, members and guests who expect to accompany the party and have not yet communicated with Mr.. Theodore Dwight, 29 West 39th St., New York, N. Y., are earnestly requested to do so without delay. For convenience of the members a summary of the additional information is here presented. A special train of Pullman cars will leave Chicago about September 15. This train will be side-tracked at all places visited, and the sleepers will be available for lodging and the dining-car for meals during the entire trip, except during the Yellowstone Park tour. The general cost of the trip per member will be $300, which includes transportation, berth, and meals for the entire trip from Chicago back to Chicago, almost 6,000 miles, and the tour through. Yellowstone Park, occupying in all about 30 days. Special, accommodations on the train will be furnished at the following rates

TWENTY FIVE years of doing, finding, and encouraging others to do scientific research in&apos; industry, and of organizing the machinery for the` smooth &apos;and effective conduct of such research, have left me with a feeling that so far as this branch of human activity is concerned the problems in &apos;essence are- not, materially &apos;different from those met elsewhere. Years ago, in a less mature period of life, I may have thought that the effective industrial research man was a being somewhat different from his fellow workers in adjacent &apos;fields, but I have long since &apos;changed my views. The rank and&apos; file of the modern industrial research organization are relatively easy to find, though some¬times difficult to get in sufficient numbers. Mistakes in choosing them are not particularly serious to the or¬ganization, however unfortunate they may be for the misplaced individual who persists too long in the wrong environment. The reason for this is obvious from the fact that, taken by and large, the work of the rank and file is at best necessarily a work of detail done under guidance of the more experienced. In this respect the situation of the rank and file in an industrial research organization is not different from that class in any other group activity, whether concerned with industry, the university, or the church. This does not mean, however, that we are not all anxious to have the best possible material obtainable in the rank and file, or that we are indifferent to the utmost of encouragement and stimulation to its individual members.

IN AS MUCH as our Institute, by tradition, never adopts any official view of matters upon which difference of opinion exists, it may be taken for granted that the duty of its Production Control Committee does&apos; not embrace the formulation of any general policy on that much-discussed subject. During the first years of its existence the Committee confined its activities to making arrangements for an annual general session at which the broader aspects of the general problem were discussed by men both within and outside the mineral industry. These general sessions, although interesting, did not indicate any definite path of progress, so during the last year the Committee has held a number of luncheon meetings at which the members might discuss in detail problems existing in the specific industries with which they are most closely acquainted, in the hope that discussions dealing with conditions rather than theories might result in the bringing to light of some general truths. Most of these truths have been fairly obvious from the beginning but they are of such basic importance that a periodic restatement of them seems worth while,

THE present methods of unloading ore and coarse-crushing at the Magna plant of the Utah Copper Co. are the developments of the past five years. Hand dumping and breaking have given way to the rotary car dump and large gyratory; and the bucket elevators and stationary screens have been replaced by conveyors and shaking screens. The coarse-crushing plant may be broadly divided into two units: the primary crushing and the secondary crushing, or primary roll, unit. The former was erected in 1923; with the exception of the excavation, the construction was carried on by forces of the company. Excavation was started in the middle of March, the first concrete was poured July 16, erection of the steel building started Oct. 30, and the unit was com-pleted and operating Dec. 30. The unit has a capacity of over 24,000 tons of ore per day, and cost more than a million dollars. Remodeling of the primary-roll unit extended over a period of years preceding this, some of the work having been done as early as 1918.
