Since mineral economics is often coupled with mining engineering in the solution of mineral industry problems, it is important that the principles of this science be a part of the mining engineer's education. Essentially, mineral economics is the application of economic principles to analysis of the multistage process by which minerals are converted from geologic resources to marketable products. In some instances, it may require only the analysis of case studies from a well- developed economics core. In others, however, it requires special skills, because some aspects of the mineral conversion process--such as mineral occurrence, exploration investment and depletion-have no complete parallel in general economics. The mining engineer has been an important contributor to the analysis of mineral economics problems because of his special knowledge of the mineral industry.

The term Boulder batholith was first applied in 1897 by W. H. Weed2 to the extensive mass of granite in western Montana within whose borders occur the ore deposits of Butte. In a general way this was known to extend from Helena on the north to the Highland Mountains near Butte on the south, and to be relatively narrow in its east-west diameter. Its intrusive relations to the surrounding sedimentary rocks, and its probable Tertiary age, were described by Weed, but in many ways his statements, based upon incomplete data, have required revision. Most notable of the errors of this description of the batholith were the failure,3 since corrected, to recognize the intrusive contact of the granite with the capping of andesite, and the complete absence of any reference to the many extensions of the granite beyond the somewhat narrow limits of its largest exposure.

Ultrasonic velocity measurements have been made to study the preferred orientation in cube-textured copper. Methods applicable to thin specimens were employed since the specimens were necessarily of sheet material. The measured velocities in various directions in the sheet differed from the corresponding values in single-crystal copper by 1 to 6 pet. The distribution of the deviations indicated that the align-ment of the (001) planes with the rolling plane was better than the alignment of the [100]and [010] directions with the rolling and transverse directions. Ultrasonic pole figures (velocity us orientation) are shown to be useful in the study of preferred orientation. THIS paper describes one set of experiments in a continuing study of preferred orientation in worked metals. This study has been undertaken to investigate the fundamental properties of metals when used as propagation media for ultrasonic waves. Many such materials are of current or potential use in ultrasonic delay lines. Fundamental studies on ultrasonic propagation parameters such as velocity, attenuation, and diffraction (beam spreading) are of importance in the design of delay lines, in the development of nondestructive testing methods, and in the study of materials themselves. Preferred orientation in worked poly-crystalline metals influences all three above-mentioned parameters, and hence is of particular importance. When polycrystalline metals are subjected to mechanical working, they develop textures dependent upon their crystal structure and the symmetry of the working operation.' The texture consists in the alignment of the crystallographic axes of the grains in preferred directions with respect to the symmetry axes of the working operation. Since the grains are elastically anisotropic, the elastic moduli of worked metals are anisotropic. Hence the velocities of elastic waves in worked metals depend on the directions of propagation and polarization. The worked metal may be thought of as taking on the elastic symmetry of a single crystal: so it possesses the same number of independent elastic moduli as the crystal class it simulates. In general, a worked metal does not adopt the crystalline symmetry of its own grains. For instance, most rolled sheet becomes effectively orthorhombic while all bar stock and wire develop hexagonal symmetry. However, certain metals with cubic crystal structure develop a cube texture upon rolling and annealing.= Nearly perfect alignment of [100]-type directions with the rolling direction, transverse direction, and rolling-plane norma1 can be achieved in certain fcc metals and alloys. These cube-textured rolled metals provide an excellent opportunity to test preferred orientation by means of elastic waves, since a worked metal with 100 pct cube texture would have elastic moduli identical to the moduli of its constituent metal. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results of an investigation upon cube-textured copper. Ultrasonic waves were used. The methods of measurement and the experimental results on the effective moduli will be given. The ultrasonic measurements will be shown to complement X-ray pole figures for the determination of preferred orientation in worked metals. EXPERIMENT To study cube - textured material, it was necessary to use thin-sheet material since a severe reduction in gage (95 to 99 pct) is necessary to produce cube texture. Special ultrasonic methods were needed to investigate the thin material at megacycle frequencies. A) Materials. The cube-textured material tested was a copper alloy containing 1 pct Zn. Specimens already measured for Young's modulus4 by Alers were kindly supplied by him. The specimens were slabs 3.00 by 0.25 in. cut from sheet 0.047 in. thick. The orientations of the long axes of the specimens with respect to the rolling direction were taken in 15-deg steps from 0 to 90 deg. B) Measurements. Two distinct experiments were performed to measure the phase velocity in these specimens. One measured the shear wave velocity for propagation in the 0.25-in. direction and polarization in the 3.00-in. direction. The other measured the velocity of both shear and longitudinal waves propagating in the thickness direction in the sheet. 1) Plate-Mode Measurements. The velocity of the zeroth-order shear mode5 was measured in the 0.25-in. direction in each strip. The specimens were ground thinner over half their length to assure that the first-order shear mode would be cut off below 6 Mc per sec, leaving the zeroth-order nondispersive shear mode as the only propagating mode. Piezoelectric ceramic transducers of 5 Mc per sec resonant frequency poled in their long direction were solder-bonded to the edges of the thin part of the slabs as in Fig. 1 after these edges had been made flat and parallel by fine grinding. THE Federal Coal Mine Safety Act (Public Law 552, 82nd Congress) was approved on July 16, 1952. It incorporates, as Title I, the Coal Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of May 7, 1941 (Public Law 49, 77th Congress), which gave Federal inspectors only the right to enter coal mines for inspection and investigation purposes but no power to require compliance with their recommendations. Title II contains the enforcement provisions of the act; its purpose is to prevent major disasters in coal mines from explosions, fires, inundations, and man-trip or man-hoist accidents. At this point a brief account of events that pre- ceded the enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act seems appropriate. The hazardous nature of coal mining was recognized by the Federal Government as long ago as 1865, when a bill to create a Federal Mining Bureau was introduced in Congress. Little was done, however, until a series of appalling coal- mine disasters during the first decade of this century provoked a demand for Federal action. As a result an act of Congress established a Bureau of Mines in the Department of the Interior on July 1, 1910. The act made it clear that one of the foremost activities of the Bureau should be to improve health and safety in the mineral industries. One of the first projects selected by the small force of engineers and technicians then employed was to determine the causes of coal-mine explosions and the means to prevent them. By investigations after mine disasters the fundamental causes and means of prevention were soon discovered, and the coal mining industry was informed accordingly. However, despite this knowledge and the enactment of State laws and the Federal Coal Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of 1941, mine disasters continued to occur with disheartening frequency and staggering loss of life. The devastating explosion at the Orient No. 2 mine on December 21, 1951, resulted in the death of 119 men. The Orient disaster rekindled the memory of the Centralia, I11., disaster of March 25, 1947, which caused the death of 111 coal miners. These two tragedies ultimately brought about enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act.

In the metallurgical treatment of most metallic sulphides it is usually necessary to carry on a roasting-operation. In some cases the raw ore will have to be roasted; in others the intermediary product, matte, produced in smelting the ore; again, both ore and matte may have to be subjected to oxidation at elevated temperatures. Most metallic sulphides, when given an oxidizing-roast, pass through the state of sulphate before they are converted into oxides. All metallic sulphates are completely decomposed by heat, with the exception of those of lead and bismuth, but the temperatures at which decompositions take place vary with the metals. Some metallic sulphates are converted directly into oxides, others first form basic salts. Alkali-earth sulphates show a behavior similar to that of metallic sulphates, while alkali sulphates do not part with their sulphur trioxide even at elevated roasting-temperatures. The older data on the decomposition of metallic sulphates by heat are only approximations. Thus Kerl' gives the order in which metallic sulphates are decomposed with increasing temperatures as (Ag2, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, Co, Mn, Pb) SO,. More recent statenlents give definite temperatures and modify the formerly accepted order of decomposition. But the temperatures given by various observers do not agree. The reasons for this are to be found mainly in the method and manner of carrying out experiments. Four methods have been used: 1. Studies have been conducted on The properties of many deep well cementing compositions to determine their Strength behavior over curing periods to 180 days at elevated tem-peratures and 3,000 psi pressure. This pressure results in essentially the .vat, compressive strength as that obtained with much higher pressures in ac-cordance with the findings of an API subcommittee ' These different compositions include API C1asses A, E, and F cements containig additives such as retarders, berrtorlite, heavy weight materials and pozzolans. All compositions except mixtures of Poz-zolrrrts and hydrated lime show from mild to severe degrees of strength lass over a temperature rang from -730 to 320" F after setting. Pozzolatl-time compositions actually gain in strength with time at these high temperatures. Other chemical find physical properties evaluated to observe their inter-relation.ship with Strength loss show very little correlation except in per-meability. As retrogression in strength increases, the permeability of set cement increases. X-ray difraction patterns on the set products indicate the formation of certain compounds having little or no strength value in those cementing compositions where strength loss was more severe. INTRODUCTION As a result of the growing trend toward deep well completions, a study has been made on the properties of the various cementing slurries presently in use at elevated temperatures and pressure. The strength of these compositions is of prime importance in selecting the most suitable material for use at high temperatures, to determine WOC time and the proper time to perforate with a minimum of shattering. Of primary interest in this investigation was the strength behavior of various compositions currently in use, and the effect of additives on cement after long periods of curing under severe conditions. Earlier investigators have pointed out that the strength of some cements will increase with increasing curing temperature to about 220 to 340" F, but at higher temperatures a loss in strength occurs at extended time intervals. Studies by the API Mid-Continent District Study Committee on Oil Well Cements' outlined a testing procedure whereby field conditions of temperature and pressure could be simulated in the laboratory.' It was observed that retarded cements undergo changes at elevated temperatures and some lose as much as 50 per cent of their early strength when cured at high temperatures. The scope of these tests was limited to curing periods of 1 to 28 days; additives were not covered in this study. Saunders and Walker' found that the use of additives influenced the strength behavior of cements at high temperatures, but studies were conducted only to a seven-day curing period. Ludwig and Pence' conducted an investigation of two types of cements under elevated pressures and temperatures in an effort to explain the causes of this loss in strength phenomenon. It was observed that with retrogression in strength there were other physical and chemical changes which took place as the cement aged. Today there are a number of cementing compositions available for use at well depths below 10,000 ft. Since all these earlier investigations were limited in curing time as well as the number and type of compositions studied, it was believed that a more extensive study should be conducted on the properties of cements at elevated temperatures, and this work should include those compositions actually in general field use at this time.

THE occurrence of the (100) [lOO] or "cube" texture upon annealing of cold-rolled copper has been much investigated.' The conditions favorable for its formation were found to be a high final annealing temperaturez or long annealing time," a high reduction of area in cold rolling prior to the final anneal,' and a small penultimate grain size." The effects of penultimate grain size and of rolling reduction were found by Cook and Richards4 to be interrelated in such a way that any combination of them giving lower than a certain value of the final average thickness of the grains in the rolled material leads to a fairly complete cube texture with a given final annealing time and temperature. Also, according to the same authors, at a higher final annealing temperature a larger average rolled grain thickness, i.e., a lower final rolling reduction, is sufficient than at a lower temperature. These somewhat involved conditions can be understood readily on the basis of recent results obtained at this laboratory. Hsun Hu was able to show recently by means of quantitative pole figure determinations that the rolling texture of tough pitch copper, which is almost identical with that of 2s aluminum: may be described roughly as a scatter around four symmetrical "ideal" orientations not very far from (123) [112]. In the case of aluminum, annealing leads to retain-ment of the rolling texture with some decrease of the scatter around the four "ideal" orientations, and to the appearance of a new texture component, namely the cube texture." A microscopic technique, revealing grain orientations by means of oxide film and polarized light, showed that the retainment of the rolling texture is achieved through two different mechanisms operating simultaneously, namely "re-crystallization in situ," and the formation of strain-free grains in orientations different from their local surroundings, but identical with that of another component of the rolling texture. Thus, a local area in the rolled material, having approximately the orientation of one of the four "ideal" components of the texture, partly retains its orientation during annealing, while recovering from its cold-worked condition, and it is partially absorbed at the same time by invading strain-free grains of an orientation approximately corresponding to that of another "ideal" texture component. The reorientation here, as well as in the formation of the strain-free grains of "cube" orientation, may be described as a [Ill] rotation of about 40°, see Fig. 1 of ref. 6. The preferential growth of grains in such orientations is a result of the high mobility of grain boundaries corresponding to this relative orientation.' " It appears very likely that in copper the mechanism of the structural changes during annealing is similar to that observed in aluminum (except for the much greater frequency of formation of annealing twins in copper). In both metals the new grains of cube orientation have a great advantage over the new grains with orientations close to one of the four components of the rolling texture. This advantage stems from their symmetrical orientation with respect to all four retained rolling texture components of the matrix; they are oriented favorably for growth at the expense of all of these four orientations. As a result, the growth of the "cube grains" is favored over the growth of the others, as soon as the new grains have grown large enough to be in contact with portions of the matrix containing elements of more than one, and preferably of all four component textures. It is clear that this critical size is smaller and, therefore, attained earlier in the annealing process if the structural units, such as grains and kink bands, representing the four matrix orientations are smaller, i. e., if the average thickness of the rolled grains is smaller. Hence, for a given annealing time and temperature, a smaller penultimate grain size and a higher rolling reduction both tend to increase that fraction of the annealing period during which the above condition is satisfied. Consequently, the percentage volume of material assuming the cube orientation increases. The same is true also for increasing time and temperature of annealing when the penultimate grain size and the final rolling reduction are constant, since the average size attained by the new grains during annealing increases with the annealing time and temperature. For the same reason, at higher annealing temperatures a given volume percentage of cube texture can be obtained with larger rolled grain thickness (larger penultimate grain size, or smaller rolling reduction) than at lower annealing temperatures. The well-known conspicuous sharpness of the cube texture may be interpreted as a result of the fact that selective growth of only those grains is favored that have an orientation closely symmetrical with respect to all four components of the deformation texture and exhibit, therefore, a high boundary mobility in contact with each. The effect of alloying elements in suppressing the cube texture, as described by Dahl and Pawlek,' appears to be associated with a change in the rolling texture. For face-centered cubic metals, such as copper, which do exhibit the cube texture upon annealing, the rolling texture is always of the type described above, i. e., scattered around four "ideal orientations" of approximately (123) [112]. The addition of certain alloying elements, such as about 5 pct Zn or 0.05 pct P in copper, has the as yet unexplained effect of changing the rolling texture into the (110) 11121 type. This texture consists of two fairly sharply developed, twin related components. In such cases, as in 70-30 brass and in silver, the annealing texture again is related to the rolling texture by a [lll] rotation of about 30°, however, because of the different rolling texture to start from, it has no cube texture component. At higher temperatures, both in brassm and in silver," grain growth leads to a further change in texture: A [lll] rotation of the same amount, but in reversed direction, back to the original rolling texture.

INTRODUCTION The tremendous capital investment required to produce a low grade ore deposit demands a reliable answer to the question: "How much does it cost to drill a well to produce the uranium that geologists have indicated is there in the ground?" However, you will find the answers given will be many and varied, depending on whether they come from the operating company, the drilling contractor, a geologist, a reservoir engineer, purchasing agent, or whoever. Each generally considers only a limited area of the total operation. The operating company usually depends upon the drilling contractors, service companies, and consultants to supply expertise. Because it is often difficult to see the "whole picture" or even to agree upon what the "whole picture" is, planning a well program and its costs is often done piecemeal. Frequently, costs "saved" in one area of the program are needlessly spent in another, because the effect of one area upon the other was overlooked. Since the drilling fluid is such an influential part of the drilling program, it should be given utmost consideration when planning the overall program. As W. D. Lacabanne wrote in 1954: "The drilling fluid system is understandably called the heart of the rotary oil drilling rig. Any other type of rotary rig.... should benefit by the incorporation of mud fluids in the drilling scheme." And G. R. Gray mentions that "The driller recognizes the drilling fluid as one of the useful tools available to solve drilling problems." However, in minerals drilling, only in recent years has the drilling fluid been considered as more than a tool to get through special problem areas. Although there are many similarities between drilling for oil and gas and drilling for minerals, the differences in the drilling equipment used justifies designing specific fluids for the minerals drilling industry. NL Baroid/NL Industries, Inc. has been a leader in introducing such fluids and in providing technical know-how to the minerals drilling industry. The purpose of this paper is: (1) to discuss the selection of drilling fluids to meet specific drilling conditions during both exploration and production and (2) to show the interrelationship among factors present in the exploration and production phases that influence total well costs. DRILLING FLUIDS FOR DRILLING PROBLEMS The drilling fluid is a tool that can be used to improve drilling performance by improving hole cutting, cleaning, stability, and formation productivity. Properly formulated and maintained drilling fluids enable the drilling operation to be carried out with increased efficiency and lower total (overall) costs. However, it should be noted that not all drilling problems can be solved by even the most carefully prepared and maintained drilling fluids. Of the many possible drilling problems encountered in a well before reaching target depth, this paper will discuss only those most likely to be present in the shallow [61 to 610 m (200 to 2000 ft)] drilling operations in South Texas. LOST CIRCULATION Loss of circulation is the most common problem encountered in drilling. Because the losses occur under varied conditions, it is often difficult to determine the exact causes. "Lost circulation" or "lost returns" means the partial or complete loss of drilling fluid to voids in the formation. "Loss of water" while drilling with water may take place into any permeable section and should be distinguished from "water loss" or filtration of fluid through the filter cake of mud solids laid down on a permeable formation. "Loss of water" can frequently be stopped by the addition of colloidal sized clay particles such as high yield bentonites, whereas "water loss" may be controlled with organic polymers. Subsurface conditions that lead to loss of circulation can be classified as: (1) natural fractures, (2) induced fractures, (3) unconsolidated or highly permeable formations (loose gravel), and (4) cavernous formations (crevices and channels). Loss of circulation may occur whenever the borehole pressure exceeds the formation pressure. The greater the differential pressure, the more likely it is that circulation may be lost. To stop loss of whole mud, voids must be bridged so that a filter cake can be laid down on the permeable section. The plugging material must be of the proper size and shape to offer greater resistance to the fluid flow around it than the flow up the annulus. A plugging composition that satisfies these requirements may not be able to be handled by the small rig pump available.

Activity in Oklahoma fields declined in 1938 from the banner year of 1937. During the year, 1768 wells were completed as compared to 2632 completed during the year 1937. The following tabulation sets out details regarding the wells completed during the year: These computations do not take into account the wells drilled for repres-sure and salt-water disposal, and other nonexploratory wells. Purchasers' reports filed with the Corporation Commission of the State of Oklahoma show a total of 168,789,229 bbl. of oil purchased from Oklahoma leases in 1938, or a daily average of 462,436, a decrease of about 25 per cent from the year 1937. The outstanding operation of the year was the further development of the Ramsey pool, in western Payne County, the producing horizon being classified as the Wilcox. This pool was discovered on the last day in the year 1937, by the Mid-Continent Petroleum Corporation drilling on a unitized block in see. 18, T. 18 N., R. 2 E. The map in Fig. 1 shows the development at the end of the year 1938. An important discovery of the year was the Champlin Refining Company's No. 1 Boehm, in Garfield County, sec. 4-24N-8W., the producing horizon being the second Wilcox found at a depth of approximately 6700 ft. This pool was assigned the name of Hillsdale. Some of the offsets to this discovery well had not come up to expectations at the end of the year, but the discovery seems to be important as indicating that the Wilcox sand is productive in the Anadarko Basin area, providing that the right structural conditions are present.

The outstanding operation of the year was the further development of the Ramsey pool, in western Payne County, the producing horizon being classified as the Wilcox. This pool was discovered on the last day in the year 1937, by the Mid-Continent Petroleum Corporation drilling on a unitized block in see. 18, T. 18 N., R. 2 E. The map in Fig. 1 shows the development at the end of the year 1938. An important discovery of the year was the Champlin Refining Company's No. 1 Boehm, in Garfield County, sec. 4-24N-8W., the producing horizon being the second Wilcox found at a depth of approximately 6700 ft. This pool was assigned the name of Hillsdale. Some of the offsets to this discovery well had not come up to expectations at the end of the year, but the discovery seems to be important as indicating that the Wilcox sand is productive in the Anadarko Basin area, providing that the right structural conditions are present.

Studies of reservoir behavior of 12 Smackover limestone oil and condensate pools are presented. Buckner, Midway, McKamie, Magnolia, Mt. Holly, Schuler (Reynolds) and Village are treated in considerable detail and subjected to analysis with an electrical device for analyzing reservoir behavior. Results and comparisons of these analyses are presented. In addition to these reservoir-behavior studies, an attempt is made to assemble trans-missibility and storage data on the Smackover limestone formation from cores and logs taken in dry holes and producers. This together with the behavior of individual reservoirs leads to a better understanding of the formation as a porous aquifer. The ultimate purpose of this type of study is to improve predictions concerning the future behavior of these pools in such a system. Predictions are presented for several pools. Introduction In 1937 the Phillips Petroleum Co. drilled its J. D. Reynolds No. I to the Smackover limestone formation at Snow Hill, Arkansas. This well found oil in the porous, permeable, upper part of the Smackover, thereafter referred to as the Reynolds lime. Since then, six oil pools and six condensate pools have been discovered in the Reynolds lime, and more than 75 dry holes have explored parts of this formation. By the first of 1943, 44 million barrels of oil and 83 billion cubic feet of gas had been withdrawn from the various reservoirs. The original reserves estimated by the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission were 342 million barrels of oil and rzoo billion cubic feet of gas. So far all of the production has been from anticlinal structures, most of which are asymmetric and have their axes roughly perpendicular to the dip of the formation top. This is indicated in Fig. I, which shows the pools, dry holes drilled, and contours on top of the Smackover.' These pools are of particular interest for reservoir-behavior studies because the production and drilling has been controlled, and in most cases the records of reservoir data are complete. In addition to the excellent production and pressure information available, more than one half of the wells drilled were cored and all of them were electrically logged. All of the pools show evidence of water drive. While this paper is in a sense a collection of reservoir-behavior studies for several different pools, there has been an attempt to go one step further and to show the importance of the iormation as a porous continuum or a single aquifer in which the withdrawals of fluids from any pool has an important effect on the behavior of all of the pools. An effort will be made to show that the water drives of these pools are dependent upon a much larger area of the Smackover limestone than that occupied by the petroleum accumulations.

Operating properties of Bancroft Mines Ltd. are in the Western Province of Northern Rhodesia, just south of the Katanga border and at the north- western end of the Rhodesian Copperbelt. The concentrator, above, was commissioned in January 1957 to treat 150,000 tons per month of ore derived from the nearby Kirila Bomwe South orebody, and the Konkola orebody eight miles away. The Konkola orebody is comparatively low grade and mining was discontinued there in early 1958. Development work on the new mine at the Kirila Bomwe North orebody commenced in 1959. Today, the plant treats approximately 150,000 tons of ore per month from the Kirila Bomwe South orebody and development ore from the north orebody. Ultimately, 100,000 tons of ore per month will be produced from the north orebody.

THE CHAIRMAN (E. G. SPILSBURY, New York, N. Y.).-The relation of the character of manganese ore to the surrounding rocks was called to my attention very strikingly in a recent investigation in Costa Rica. In the foothills of the main coastal range there is a large deposit of manganese which extends for over 150 miles along the coast. This is in a porphyry district and the occurrences are almost exclusively along the lines of contact between a recent diorite intrusion through the porphyries. Wherever that intrusion appears to have exerted great force, the line of contact is very clear between the porphyries and the diorites. Where the action has been slower and the lifting force of the intrusion more gradual, there has been a zone of fracture of very considerable width. Those ores which occur where the fractured zone has not been very extensive carry a, lower percentage of manganese than where it has been deposited along a wider zone of fracture. In the so-called narrow veins, which are really the predominant ones, the solution carrying the manganese has evidently attacked the silica in the intrusive rock, and the resulting ore is practically a combination of manganese and silica, running froth 20 to 30 per cent. of manganese and from 20 to 40 per cent. of silica: hence those ores are not likely for a long time to become a factor in our manganese supply :for this country. On the other hand, where the disturbance to the porphyritic schist has been more intense; the manganese deposits are not so extensive, but the ore is richer, running from 45 to 51 and 52 per cent. manganese, with a silica content of from 4 to 5 per cent. There seems to be some resemblance in these deposits to those of the Cuyuna range. EDMUND NEWTON, Minneapolis, Minn.-The State Bureau of Mines has been working on the problem of concentrating manganiferous iron ore for two years or more. I should consider hand sorting as the best form of treatment, because it is practised at all of the mines which ship ore for making alloys, but not, however, oil the ore that is being used for pig iron. Hand sorting, assisted by selective mining, is readily applicable to some of this ore because the gangue is practically the original rock and is easily separated. However, it is only in rather limited zones that we find clean patches of rock. Generally the silica exists as a skeleton of the original rock structure, in which the manganese has been precipitated; some of the silica may have been dissolved, but if any of the original rock remains, the silica must be eliminated by ore-dressing processes.

THE resistance to motion offered by mine cars is caused principally by: Rolling friction, flange friction, bending rails, bearing friction and wind resistance. With proper construction and with a fair amount of attention and care, that is, under favorable conditions, the first three items cannot be greatly improved. The wind resistance ordinarily is negligible on account of the slow speeds commonly used. The bearing friction, however, is a variable item, depending upon the design, the bearing material, the lubrication, the location (whether in wheel-hub or on car-body) and the alignment. Under the most favorable conditions the bearing friction will reach a lowest possible value. By the development of a successful anti-friction mine-car bearing this lowest value has been improved to such an extent as to affect the whole system of mine haulage. After being satisfied of their durability and certainty of operation, any investigation into the advantages of anti-friction bearings for mine cars will have to be based upon reliable information as to the saving in power of such bearings. While numerous tests have been made in this direction, the results have not always been convincing, principally because of the rather crude methods that were employed. These crude methods are the main cause of the wide variations existing in regard to the exact amount of the frictional resistance. Frequently an ordinary spring balance is used and the pull necessary to move a certain car or train of cars is obtained by a number of readings. Such spring balances necessarily have a coarse graduation and the continuous vibration and fluctuations to which they are subjected make them highly dependent upon the individual observer. Further, they must be frequently calibrated. Sometimes these tests were made without regard to acceleration, speed or even grade.

The surface-diffusion coefficients of Ni63 diffusing on low-index planes of nickel single crystals have been measured over the temperature range from 400° to 1000°C using a precision autoradio-gvaphic technique. The activation energy for sur -face diffusion appears to he the same on the {111}, {110), and (100) planes and amounts to -0.60 ev. This is in good agreement with the value (-0.62 ev) reported for (111) planes obtained by mass-transport techniques. In an earlier paper, the authors have reported self surface-diffusion coefficients on silver.' In that work, a deviation of the diffusion coefficients from linearity in the Arrhenius plot was observed at high temperatures. This effect was attributed to a loss of tracer atoms into the bulk by volume diffusion. The purpose of the present work was to extend the technique developed to the nickel surface-diffusion system up to the point where volume diffusion would come into play. The nickel system especially lends itself to this technique due to the high efficiency of the isotope in darkening the film and the large absorption of the weak radiation (0.063 mev /3- particle of the trapped tracer atoms. The diffusion coefficients and ictivation energy for different orientations on nickel can also be compared with a report published by Blakely and Mykura 2 where a mass-transfer technique was used. This paper reports the self surface diffusion of nickel on the low-index planes over a wide temperature range using a precision autoradiographic technique. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experiment is similar to that described in the earlier publication consisting of a radioactive needle as a source resting on a flat, smooth, chemically polished surface annealed in a dynamic dry-hydrogen atmosphere. The needle is held snugly on the surface by a holder fabricated from commercially pure nickel. The point source is made by grinding down a small-diameter nickel rod until a tip of approximately 0.1 mm radius is formed. It is then etched and the needle tip plated with the radioactive isotope Ni63. Nickel single crystals were used whose main impurities were spectrographically determined as Co 0.05, Fe 0.007, C 0.005, and S 0.003 pct. The surfaces, oriented to within 1/2 deg of the low-index planes, were carefully mechanically polished and etched in a 50-30-10-10 hot solution of acetic, nitric, sulfuric, and phosphoric acids giving a smooth polished surface. The crystals were then washed in distilled water and alcohol. Annealing temperatures ranged from 400° to 1000°C with a furnace arrangement in which the crystals could be brought up to temperature in times short compared to diffusing times. The temperature was maintained constant to ±10°C. In the temperature range investigated, the ratio of the surface-diffusion coefficient to the volume-diffusion coefficient (Ds/Du) was 105 or more and the mean bulk-penetration values, calculated from literature values of volume-diffusion coefficients,3 were on the order of 10-5 cm. After the diffusion anneal, the sintered needle is removed, and both the radius of the needle point and spot left on the crystal face are measured. The crystal is then placed on photographic film. Diffusion profiles are obtained by scanning the film with a recording microdensitometer which has a slit width of 10µ. DISCUSSION AND RESULTS The experimental conditions are such that the source strength and needle radius are essentially constant and the time is adjusted such that the mean bulk penetration is small. An exactly analogous heat-flow problem has been considered by Carslaw and Jaeger4 and the solution can be written in integral form as:
