Discussion of the paper of W. G. MATTESON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1918, and printed in Bulletin No. 134, February, 1915, pp. 429 to 468. WILLIAM KENNEDY, Fort Worth, Tex. (written discussion*). -In his discussion of this paper, Mr. Sherburne Rogers offers voluminous figures to show that the salt forming the. cores of the various domes could not have been derived from sea water, and gives as an illustration the immense quantity of water required to form the salt found in the Humble dome. He refers to the theory advanced by Van der Gracht apparently in support of this contention, and claims to have disposed of the views held by some that the domes were, in a great measure, formed by lateral secretion. Van der Gracht says the immense salt plugs found throughout North Germany and other countries in that region were apparently formed by orogenic movements acting upon what he calls the Mother Bed of Salt, which he gives a thickness of about 1000 ft., and an extent of several thousand square miles. The age of this "mother bed" is given as Permian. Harris, in addition to his growing-crystal theory, also says probably a great portion of the salt found in the Coastal dories may have been derived from the salt water of Permian time. Both of these theories require an abundance of water, and consequently oppose Mr. Rogers' idea that the immensity of water required disproves the formation of the salt from that source. I do not suppose, however, that either Van der Gracht or Harris absolutely limits his view to the Permian as being the only source from which the salt could have come, but would probably agree to consider any other age as being the beginning. Although the Permian is very strongly represented throughout North Texas, we have none anywhere throughout the region from which the salt may be considered as having been derived. Many deep wells have been drilled along the eastern outcropping of the Carboniferous and each has passed directly from Cretaceous to Carboniferous formations. Thus we may eliminate the Permian as a source of salt in this region. But, although the Permian may be absent, we have with us the Carboniferous with probably a thickness of 3000 to 4000 ft., and something like 3000 ft. of Cretaceous, to say nothing of approximately 8000 ft. of Tertiary and later beds, all of which, if we may judge by the quantity and density of the waters obtained from the numerous wells drilled, carry immense quantities

The White River Shale Project has completed a 5,000-foot production decline and a 30-foot diameter 1,010-foot deep shaft into its oil shale orebody in the Uinta Basin of eastern Utah. This is the first major underground access into these Green River deposits in this basin and provides an opportunity to establish and monitor in-situ rock mechanics stations as input to the mine engineering and planning of this large opening, high-tonnage mine. This paper discusses the history, mine development, and rock mechanics planning for this project.

A discussion of the paper by Messrs. Jüptner von Jonstorff, Blair, Dillner and Stead, read by title at the Lake Superior meeting, but presented first at the New York meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute (October, 1904), and here published under a mutual agreement between the two Institutes. Correspondence. MR. R. HAMILTON (Glengarnock) wrote to say that it was known for many years, that unless certain precautions were taken in dissolving the sample, there was a liability to obtain a solution from which the ammonium-molybdate solution would not precipitate the whole of the phosphorus. In 1877 Blair and Finkiner independently attributed this interference to the presence of carbonaceous matter in the solution, derived from the action of acids on the combined carbon of the metal, and they directed that the solution should be prepared in such a manner as to destroy these carbonaceous compounds. This was practically effected by evaporating the acid solution to dryness and roasting the residue. Adolf Tamm, in 1884, accentuated the same view. There are methods founded on the above-mentioned observations which leave nothing to be desired in point of accuracy, but the evaporation to dryness with subsequent roasting and re-solution consumes much time, besides the minor inconvenience caused by large amounts of acid fumes. In 1888 P. W. Shinier suggested that the incomplete precipitation of phosphorus was due to incomplete oxidation of -.the phosphorus, and proposed to render all the phosphorus precipitable by oxidizing the solution with potassium permanganate, etc. Experiments were made to test the accuracy of this view (details will be found in the Journal of the Society of Chemical Industry, vol. x., p. 904), and the results obtained seem to-prove that it is the correct one. In the Ti-Cd system two intermediate phases, TiCd and Ti Cd, have been found and characterized by X-ray diffraction powder techniques. An earlier reference' had reported the existence of the compound Tisd. No structural details, however, were given nor was there any indication of the possible existence of other binary compounds. Studies of the solubility of titanium in liquid cadmium2 led to the discovery of both TiCd and Tisd. The solid phase in equilibrium with saturated solutions of titanium in liquid cadmium at temperatures below 620°C is TiCd, whereas TizCd is the equilibrium solid phase above 620°C. Both thermal analysis and X-ray studies show that a peritectic reaction between the y phase (~isd) and cadmium to form the 6 phase (Ti Cd) occurs at 620°C. X-ray diffraction powder photographs of material isolated from the ingots used in the solubility measurements as well as material prepared by a direct heat of the appropriate stoichiometric amounts of titanium and cadmium can be indexed on the basis of a tetragonal unit cell with a = 2.904 ± 0.002A, co = 8.954 * 0.004A, c/a = 3.083. No variation of lattice parameters indicative of a range of composition is evident. With four atoms in the unit cell the calculated density of the intermetallic is 7.05 g per cm3; the observed value is 7.07 g per cm3. The TiCd lattice is primitive as indicated by the fact that there are no systematic absences among hkl reflections. The absence of all hko reflections for which h + k = 2n + 1 is also evident. This systematic absence indicates the following two space groups, C\h — P4/n and D&~4/nmm; both groups, however, have the same two- and four-fold positions. Stoichiometry, symmetry and space group indicate two likely structure types. They are the PbO-litharge3 (B10) type and the Ti CU (B11) type. Spatial considerations favor the B11 structure with atoms placed in the following positions: 2Ti (c) 0, 1/2, Z; l/2, 0, Z 2Cd(c) 0, 1/2, Z; 1/2, 0, Z The TiCd structure may be summarily described as a layered structure in which double cadmium layers alternate with double titanium layers along the c-axis. The best agreement between calculated and observed intensities is obtained for the values ZTi = 0.608 and ZCd = 0.130. Calculated and observed powder intensities as well as other pertinent powder data are recorded in Table I. WHEN a new type of equipment revolutionizes methods of quarrying one kind of stone, producers of other kinds focus their attention on its potentialities in their particular fields. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the accomplishments of the wire saw in slate, to show its more limited attainments in other kinds of stone, and to point out the possibili-ties of much wider application. A wire saw consists of a 3/16-in. or 1/4-in. three-strand wire cable that runs as a belt and cuts the rock by abrasion. (Fig. 1.) The teeth of the saw are sand grains carried in the grooves between the strands.

Experimental work on liquefaction of coal was taken up by the Bureau of Mines in 1936 when it became evident that a prudent policy from the national point of view should include preparation for the time when gradual exhaustion of petroleum resources would require supplementing the growing demand for motor fuel with gasoline and diesel oil from coal. At that time (1936) certain foreign nations that had no home sources of petroleum, especially Germany, England, and Japan, were conducting active research and at least two of them were producing liquid fuel from coal on a commercial scale. Germany was reported to have an annual producing capacity of 800,000 metric tons of gasoline per year, and England had just put into operation the Billingham plant of Imperial Chemical Industries for the hydrogehation of bituminous coal and tar by the Bergius-I.G. process. The annual capacity of this plant was about 150,000 long tons of gasoline per annum (3500 bbl. per day). With these developments taking place in foreign countries, it seemed important to undertake a long-range program of fundamental research in this country to establish a sound groundwork for the evaluation of foreign work on synthetic liquid fuels and at the same time to obtain data on the oil yields and operating difficulties using various kinds of American coals and lignite to the hydrogenation process. The results of such research would be useful in determining the yields and quality of liquid products obtainable from various coals so that American industry would be in position to select the most suitable coals and make rapid progress in establishing this new industry when the commercial need should arise. It was hoped, also, that progress in a better understanding of the chemistry of coal hydrogenation would reduce the cost of the process materially. To carry out this program, a small continuous unit capable of hydrogenating 100 Ib. of coal in 24 hr. was installed at the Central Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh, Pa. Small steel autoclaves or bombs of 0.3 gal. (1.2 liters) capacity also were used for batch-hydro-genation experiments in the study of the chemical fundamentals of the process. Much valuable assistance was obtained in planning the experimental program and designing the equipment from the Fuel Research Station of Great Britain and the Fuel Laboratories of the Mines Department of Canada, where such investigations had been in progress for several years. The Project Independence Evaluation System (PIES) is a complex evaluation, forecasting, and analysis system which represents the U.S. energy production, conversion, transportation and consumption activities. The system includes various models: An econometrically estimated energy demand model, used to evaluate the final demand functions for energy commodities ; A collection of supply models, used to evaluate the cost curves or supply curves for domestic crude oil, natural gas, coal ; An integrating model used to describe energy conversion and transportation activities and to calculate prices which equate energy supply and demand in each market. PIES has been used to generate conditional forecasts of the 1980, 1985, and 1990 states of the energy system--forecasts conditional upon the world oil prices, the energy policy environment, and other uncertainties. Scenarios have been structured to separately examine conservation initiatives, domestic energy supply enhancements, an extensive electrification strategy, and oil and natural gas well -head price regulation. This paper presents the basic model, discusses its use for examining policy options, and describes several forecast results. The paper draws heavily upon work completed for the 1976 National Energy Outlook, published by the Federal Energy Administration.

PART 1. EFFECT OF HEATING RATE UPON RECRYSTALLIZED GRAIN SIZE OF ALUMINUM AND ALUMINUM ALLOYS AMONG those concerned with the annealing and heat-treating of aluminum and aluminum alloys, it is well known that after cold-working a coarser grain is usually produced by slow heating than by more rapid heating. Consequently, for the control of the grain size produced by annealing or heat-treating cold-worked aluminum and aluminum alloys, the heating rate is of considerable practical importance. References in the current literature on the effect of heating rate are numerous, but it appears neither necessary nor desirable to give here a review of the former work done on this subject. It became evident during some preliminary work on the recrystalliza-tion of aluminum and aluminum alloys that the effect of heating rate depended upon the type of microstructure of the metal. This observation led to the following study of the relationship of the type of microstructure of the alloy to the effect of the heating rate.

(communication to the Secretary?). -The fibrous salt crystals described by Dr. Branner are interesting, and I am glad that he has put this additional evidence on record. It confirms the results that I obtained in growing fibrous crystals in the laboratory. Much similar evidence of value to science in interpreting the laws of nature has doubtless been lost through failure to appreciate little things. Mr. Dresser points out that the boundary between chrysotile veins and massive serpentine is finely irregular 'when examined under the microscope. This fact I have observed in studying chrysotile veins and also, mode recently, in studying veins of fibrous calcite and fibrous gypsum. For the latter veins the statement holds true when the walls are of shale as well as when they are of the same material as the veins, but in no instance have I observed any evidence of replacement. The description of the vein walls given in my paper (pp. 1984 to 1985) was megascopic, not microscopic. The fact that chrysotile veins have sharply defined boundaries and are easily separated from the wall rock is evidenced by the small amount of waste adhering to the "crude asbestos" which has been shipped in such large quantities from some of the Canadian mines. Mr. Dresser has good ground for his statement that there seems to be no obvious reason why the term "mass fiber" should be restricted to anthophyllite. I have never examined the serpentine at the East Broughton mines; but in studying other serpentines under the microscope I have noted that much of the so-called "massive serpentine" is really finely fibrous (see pp. 1974 to 1975). The texture of such rock is, however, altogether different from that of mass-fiber anthophyllite, and I believe that the fibers have developed in a different way (see pp. 1981 and .1998). Mr. Graham raises certain objections on the ground that the laboratory production of fibrous crystals was limited to substances which go into solution with decrease in volume. Since my paper was written, however, I have succeeded in obtaining fibrous crystals of ammonium nitrate, a salt that dissolves with expansion in volume.

J. Leja (Professor, Dept. of Mineral Engineering, U.B.C. Vancouver, Canada) — I would like to offer some comments on the behavior of contact angle with time, treated in this paper. The authors should be congratulated for a clear exposition of these uncommon departures in the correlation between flotation and contact angle, in systems of importance to industrial practice. Some nine years ago Professor J. H. Schulman (presently at Columbia University, New York) and I reported on a similar study conducted at the Ernest Oppenheimer Laboratory, Cambridge, England.' The systems used by us had, how- ever, no direct practical application at that time, as mercury in solutions of xanthates was tested with a variety of alkyl-aryl polyoxyethylene frothers which were then new to flotation practice. Further, the paper dealt with findings contrary to the then widely held belief that the contact angle established in collector-solution is unaffected by the addition of a frother. Correlation with flotation, or lack thereof, was not sought, though we did suggest that in many cases the selectivity of frothers might be influenced by the dynamic contact angles. BEFORE the present company was formed, in 1916, each group of mines comprising the old organizations made its detailed daily and monthly mine cost records along the lines used before the consolidation; that is, there was no attempt made to standardize and compare the stope costs of all mines. The general cost sheets for all mines, however, were standardized, and cumulative labor cost sheets were compiled in the general superintendent's office. At most of the mines, a daily record or distribution sheet for each working place was kept, showing the number of men, hours of drilling, hours of timbering, hours of tramming, cars of ore, cars of waste, sticks of powder and feet of fuse. This information was kept by each shift boss and entered on the distribution sheet by him or, at some mines, by a tram boss. The superintendent solved his own problems under the direction of the general superintendent, but without coming in touch with other superintendents, either through records or general conferences. Probably 95 per cent. of the stopes were square-set worked by day's pay; there were some back-filling and shrinkage stopes. Many of the development places, such as shaft sinking, station cutting, drifting and raises had always been run by contract. These contracts were given, for no definite period, at so much per linear foot and were measured monthly, or when completed; the men being paid monthly. In some cases, fairness to the employee, was not maintained. On the whole, there was no standardization. There were no stope contracts, because of the objections of the Western Federation of Miners to general contracting in the mines.

THE electric arc welding of cast iron has been studied by Braune, Lamberton, Schimpke, Kenyon, Gale Manufacturing Co., Wedemeyer, Candy, Neese, Miller, Carter, American Welding Society, Namack, Lebrun, Achenbach, Jansson, Kochendörffer and others.1 The writer of this paper has been able to obtain a series of cast irons, from gray to white, without using cast-iron electrodes but by coating on wrought-iron bars mixtures of carborundum (SiC) and graphite (C). In this work, he has found the curious phenomenon of barium- carbonate.

The Moffat tunnel passes through the continental divide about 50 miles west of Denver, Colo., on the Denver & Salt Lake R. R.: It is 16 ft. wide, 24 ft. high, and 32,383 ft. long, a distance of a little more than 6 miles. The advantages accruing from its construction may be briefly summarized as follows: The tunnel eliminates 27 miles of grade averaging more than 3.5 per cent. and actually running well over 4 per cent. in many places, and changes the steepest grade from 4.5 to 2 per cent. It reduced the peak of the railroad from 11,660 to 9249 ft. which enables one engine to pull four times as much freight as it could before the tunnel was built. If the Denver & Salt Lake R. R. completes its line, this road will shorten the distance between Denver and Salt Lake City by 200 miles and will have no steeper grades than the lines now connecting the two cities. The proposal to drive the tunnel through the divide dates back about 25 years and D. H. Moffat, who was the leading spirit in the organization of the Denver & Salt Lake R. R. spent much of his time and energy in efforts to raise money for the tunnel that bears his name. He was unsuccessful and died before the work was started. In 1920 an effort was made to obtain state legislation favoring a bond issue to finance three important railroad tunnels in Colorado but the measure was defeated, largely through the efforts of the citizens of the region near Pueblo. A few years later devastating floods caused the Pueblo voters to seek relief from the state and at this time they withdrew their objection to the tunnel bond issue. As a result, a $6,720,000 bond was issued to finance the Moffat tunnel. Construction bids were so high that the work was finally allotted on a scheme analogous to a cost-plus basis. The contract was awarded to Hitchcock and Tinckler, who are paid a fee of $140,000 for driving the tunnel. All bills are paid by the Moffat Tunnel Commission. The contract was let Sept. 19, 1923, and Hitchcock and Tinckler agreed to complete the work by July 19, 1927. THIS shaft, located in the northern anthracite coal-field about 2300 feet southwest from the court-house at Wilkes-Barre, in the County of Luzerne, Pa., is the property of the Lehigh & Wilkes¬Barre Coal Company. The sinking and cribbing to the solid rock (see isometrical view on Plate IX) was conducted by Mr. W. W. Kenrick. Dimensions of the earthwork to the foundation of the cribbing, 51' 1/2" long, 17' 4" wide, 31' deep. Total amount of excavation in cubic yards, 998.5. Dimensions within the permanent cribbing, 45' 4" long, 11' 16" wide, 31' deep, divided into six parts by buttons 8" x 12", each division, 7' x 11’ 16". Permanent cribbing 12" x 12"; temporary cribbing 8" x 10"; backing, 3" thick ; clay puddle to ex¬clude surface water, 12" thick; conductors, 8" x 5"; lining, 1" thick from top to bottom of the shaft. In the latter part of the year 1871, Mr. H. Murray & Son contracted with the company for the continuation of the work at the rate of four hundred dollars per yard in depth, to a point 100 feet below the Hillman seam of coal ; for the succeeding 100 feet the price to be increased twenty-five dollars per yard, and so on until the bottom rock of the Baltimore seam of coal was found. The size of the shaft within the cribbing timbers is 45 feet 4 inches by 11 feet 6 inches, having six divisions of equal dimensions, 7 feet by 11 feet 6 inches, giving room for what is known as the" standard diamond" car, whose capacity when level full is 100 cubic feet, but when loaded by the miner 4 inches above the top contains 112 cubic feet.* Two divisions of this shaft are intended for hoisting coal from the Hillman seam, two from the Baltimore seam, one for ventilation, and one for pumps. The works were planned for two pairs of direct-acting, high-pres¬sure engines, twenty-four boilers, and for an estimated output of 2500 tons of coal per day from the two seams. * Size of the "standard diamond" car, 8' 10” x 4' 3" x 2’ 8” = 100.1.4; loaded 4 inches above the top, 8' 10” x 4’ 3” x 3’ “0"= 112.7.6.

Surface-tension measurements for liquid Fe-C-Co and Fe-C-Ni alloys were performed by the sesszle-drop technique at 1350o and 1425°C. Cobalt was shown to he more effective than nickel in lowering the surface tension of Fe-C alloys A minimum value for surface tension of 1640 dynes per cm was found in the Fe-C-Co system at a concentration of 1.5 pet C and 12pet Co. Analysis of these measurements in terms of adsorption and desorption behavior indicated that cobalt and nickel lower surface tension in Fe-C alloys by replacing carbon at the liquid-vapor interface. Comparison of results to date for Fe-C liquid alloys has shown that most substitutional-type elements having about the same atomic diameter as iron also have relatively the same influence on surface tension when present in dilute amounts. It has been shown previously that surface-adsorption behavior in liquid Fe-C ternary alloys is related to the manner in which the ternary addition affects the activity of carbon in the bulk solution.' Certain ternary additions, such as chromium, tending to decrease carbon activity cause adsorption of carbon and chromium to the liquid-vapor interface. Additions, such as silicon, increase the carbon activity, resulting in a desorption of carbon and an adsorption of silicon. Both cases were shown to cause a decrease in surface tension due to adsorption. It is the object of this paper, as part of the writers' continuing interest in the effect of alloying additions on the surface tension of Fe-C alloys, to present and discuss surface-tension data on solutions in the ternary systems Fe-C-Co and Fe-C-Ni. Available activity measurements for these systems in the solid state indicate a strong increase in carbon activity when either nickel or cobalt is added to Fe-C alloys.2, 3 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloy compositions used are shown in Table I. These alloys were prepared by vacuum melting in stabilized zirconia crucibles and then vacuum casting into cold-steel molds. The nominal analyses for the alloys used in this investigation are given in Table I. Surface tensions and densities were measured by the sessile-drop method4,5 in conjunction with the tables of Bashforth and bdams.' Specimens were prepared by slicing 1/4-in. cubes from the center of the vacuum-cast ingots and grinding the edges of these cubes until their shapes approximated spheres with flat bottoms. Proper handling techniques, including an acetone rinse immediately before use, assured minimum contamination from sources extraneous to the actual melting. For each experimental run a sample was placed on a BeO plaque and positioned and leveled inside a vacuum induction heating apparatus. The sample and plaque arrangement sat inside a molybdenum tube which acted as the susceptor. Diagrams of this apparatus may be found in the literature.= After heating to temperatures just above the liquidus at pressures of the order of 10-4 to 10- 5 mm Hg, photographs of the drop profile were made using its natural thermal radiation as a light source. Some measurements were made with partial pressures (-1 cm Hg) of a mixture of H2 and He gases. The H2-He atmospheres proved to be necessary at higher nickel contents to retard excessive vaporization losses. Chemical analysis for carbon and the ternary addition was performed for each alloy sample after completion of the experimental run.

AN explosive of balanced composition might be expected, on first consideration, to develop maximum propulsive strength.1 This hypoth¬esis is based on the assumption that an excess of oxygen would act simply as an inert material with a consequent lowering of flame temperature, also that a deficiency of oxygen would tend toward incomplete reaction of the combustible materials, thereby preventing development of the full strength of the explosion. Actually, however, it can be shown both theoretically and experimentally that an explosive having a certain oxygen deficiency will develop the greatest propulsive strength. This fact has been known to the technical staffs of explosives manufacturers for many years, but it has not always been recognized by explosives engineers in the field. For example: There is a fairly widespread opinion that the wrapper of a stick of dynamite is merely a container for the explosive and that it plays little if any part in the development of propulsive strength. Actually, it can be shown that the wrapper enters fairly completely into the explosive reaction. In the case of most gelatin dynamites, a given weight of explosive from which the wrappers have been removed will develop considerably less strength than the same weight of explosive plus wrapper, in spite of the fact that the latter combination contains less weight of the actual explosive ingredient. THIS paper describes part of a series of density measurements on low melting point metals being undertaken at the Mines Branch, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa, Canada. This program has received support from the Canadian Zinc and Lead Research Committee and the International Lead and Zinc Research Organization. Examples of the type of work being done have already been given in earlier papers' , which deal with the densities of lead, tin, and some of their alloys. Densities were measured using a graphite pyc-nometer by a technique which has already been described." The cadmium and indium, supplied by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada were of 99.999 pct purity. Density determinations on indium, as for lead and tin,1,2 were made under a vacuum of about 5 x 10-6 torr because the oxidation and vaporization characteristics of the metal do not create experimental difficulties. This contrasts markedly with cadmium which, even at the relatively low temperatures of our experiments, has a high vapor pressure and a strong oxidation potential. To suppress the harmful effects of these properties, determinations on cadmium were made with success under an atmosphere of argon, the technique having been previously established in this laboratory for measurements on zinc.3 The densities of cadmium and indium are listed in Table I and plotted in Figs. 1 and 2. From the graphs, it is readily observed that the densities of both metals vary linearly with temperature. This relationship expressed mathematically is of the form:

(communication to the Secretary?).-In discussing the question of the deoxidation of steel and material suitable for performing this function at the end of the heat, it would seem logical also to include the question of prevention of oxidation in the steel or the formation of iron oxide, FeO. I refer to the use of manganese in the basic open-hearth and basic Bessemer processes. The advantages of high manganese in pig iron for these processes have evidently been clearly understood in Germany for a number of years, although little has been written in regard to the exact manner in which the benefits are obtained. In this country, while we make no steel by the basic Bessemer process, our basic open-hearth process is becoming more and more important. Until 10 years ago, in this country, manganese in the pig iron for this process was considered of little value and by many writers it was spoken of as a disadvantage. During the past 10 years, however, in certain parts of the United States, higher contents of manganese in basic pig have been used with considerable success, although there is apparently nothing in our technical literature to show the reasons for this trend. A German book, "The Basic Open-Hearth Steel Process" by Carl Dichmann does, however, offer an explanation. Dichmann says that if the charge for either of the above-mentioned processes contains 3 per cent. of manganese or above, satisfactory steel.

Professor Jenney has performed a notable service in presenting this summary of the steadily increasing body of observation on the presence of carbon in rocks of all kinds and its probable influence upon ore-deposition, and in formulating a mode of comparing directly the relative resistance of minerals to oxidation, as well as their reducing-power, and the protective action which minerals having higher reducing-powers exert in preventing the oxidation of associated minerals which possess relatively lower affinities for oxygen. I have had an opportunity of observing a vein which falls within the scope of his interesting discussion. The vein at Ku Shau Tzu, Mongolia, lies directly across a contact of limestone and overlying bituminous shales. Probably it occupies a compression-fissure. The shale has been reduced to such a condition of' non-coherence that much of it can be crushed in the hand, producing a handful of angular fragments resembling beech-nuts in shape and size. In the limestone the metals are principally in argentiferous galena with some pyrite and blende; but the latter two are very subordinate in quantity to the galena. In short, it is an every-day lead-vein in limestone, with siliceous limestone gangue. It is one of those veins in which the ore is not continuous, but consists of a band in the country-rock in which seams of lead sulphide begin at one wall and cross in a bent form, increasing in thickness, to the other wall, where they thin out and end. This may indicate torsional stress, but the shape of the lenses points to some other action. They often ran nearly parallel to the hanging-wall for a considerable distance and crossed the vein on a moderate angle, but turned sharply along the vein on approaching the foot-wall. The intermediate rock contains nodules, bunches and specks of ore, and the lenses vary exceedingly in size, shape and position in the vein.
