The densities of some liquid Pb-Sb alloys up to 11 wt pct Sb and Pb-Sb-& alloys up to 10 pct Sb/10 pct Sh have been determined by a pycnometric technique over a temperature range of about 130°C above their melting points. The data given are accurate within 0.05 pct. Density is shown to vary linearly with temperature , and equations relating these quantities have been formulated. Molar volumes calculated from the density data indicate that volumetric deviations from ideal mixing are undetectable within the limits of experimental error. A continuing research program into some fundamental physical properties of liquid metals is being pursued at the Mines Branch, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa, Canada. This work has received support from the Canadian Zinc and Lead Research Committee in cooperation with the International Lead and Zinc Research Organization. This paper, which reports some density data for Pb-Sb and Pb-Sb-Sn alloys, follows previous work from this laboratory on lead, tin, and Pb-Sn alloys.' Of previous data from others, Greenaway2 and Sato and Munakata3 have reported results on Pb-Sb alloys. No previous work has been published on the ternary Pb-Sb-Sn alloys, reported here. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Densities were measured by a pycnometric technique which has been described in detail and appraised for accuracy in earlier Mines Branch reports.475 Fig. 1 shows the densitometer with the pycnometer in position for a run. The pycnometer is also shown in some detail. The pycnometer of dense, high-purity graphite, about 14 cu cm in volume, was carefully machined to a uniform, smooth finish. The height was measured by a depth micrometer and the diameter by fitting precision gage blocks between steel balls.' In each case several readings were taken, and the final results were considered accurate within 0.01 pct. The resulting volumetric uncertainty together with small inaccuracies in the coefficients of linear expansion of graphite lead to a maximum systematic uncertainty in the method of ±0.03 pct. As shown in Fig. 1, the pycnometer lid is a threaded cap. Thus, the charge, a cylinder of the alloy, can easily be inserted and the solidified metal can readily be removed after a run. The dimensions of the cylindrical charge are chosen to ensure that, once molten, the metal will not only fill the pycnometer completely but will discharge an excess into the excess-metal float chamber. AS the temperature is increased above the melting point, the volume of metal in the excess chamber increases until the system has equilibrated at the desired temperature. At this point, the excess chamber is moved to one side by twisting the shaft F, leaving a fixed volume of liquid metal in the pycnometer. This volume of fluid is readily calculated using measured coefficients of linear expansion of the graphite which expands anisotropically. The associated weight of fluid is determined as the weight of the solidified metal removed after the furnace has cooled down. Alloys were prepared from 99.997 pct Pb, 99.999 pct Sn, and 99.999 pct Sb, being melted by an electric furnace in a graphite crucible and poured into graphite molds. Several density specimens of the same nominal size were machined from each ingot, and, by comparing specimen weights, relative differences in specimen composition resulting from segregation in the ingots could be detected. MAJOR considerations in the production of stainless steel are the utilization of stainless steel scrap and the recovery of chromium and other metallic values from the initial furnace charge. The decarburization of a bath of molten chromium steel with gaseous oxygen is usually accompanied by a considerable amount of metallic oxidation. Since recovery of this metal from the slag may require substantial expenditures of time and materials for slag reduction, holding metallic oxidation to the minimum consistent with good operating practice is generally desirable. The important role of temperature in minimizing metallic oxidation is illustrated by Fig. 1, taken from the results of Hilty, Healy, and Crafts,' who established the quantitative relations connecting the amounts of chromium, manganese, and iron oxidized during the oxidizing period of chromium steel heats with the composition of the initial charge and the temperature and composition of the molten bath after oxidation. Higher temperatures after the oxygen blow result in lower metallic oxidation. Although high temperatures are desirable for minimizing metallic oxidation, practical operating considerations limit the degree to which they can be employed. Excessively high temperatures or prolonged operation at moderately high temperatures may cause serious damage to the furnace refractories, so that a compromise must be effected. The problem, therefore, is one of controlling the oxidizing period of chromium steel heats to the shortest time at the highest practical temperature. The most effective tool the steel melter has for attaining high temperature while decarburizing a chromium steel heat is now commonly considered to be the oxygen lance with an adequate supply of gaseous oxygen. In order for the tool to be effective, however, the heat resulting from the oxidation of carbon, chromium, silicon, manganese, and iron in the bath must exceed the heat losses from the furnace. General recognition, of this principle has stimulated a trend toward faster injection of oxygen. For example, Pachaly2 proposed a high temperature at the start of the oxygen blow or a high rate of oxygen input as a means of obtaining the desired carbon level with high chromium recovery. On the other hand, limited understanding of the specific effects of oxygen input rate has hampered development of optimum practices. As part of a broad study of the metallurgy of chromium steel melting, therefore, the Linde Air Products Co. and the Electro Metallurgical Co. at their Metals Research Labo-ratories have evaluated the heat-balance during the oxidizing period in terms of oxygen input rate. Swaged iron wire has a cylindrical {001} <110> texture. The texture is also cylindrical after re-crystallization in the absence of a magnetic field, but <111> and <112> components are added to this texture when recrystallization occurs in a field. The mecizanical properties in tension and in torsion are not greatly altered by these changes in texture. AS shown in a previous paper,1 cold-worked wires of the two fcc metals copper and aluminum can be made relatively strong in torsion and weak in tension, or vice versa, by proper control of preferred orientation (texture). The deformation texture can be controlled by selection of the starting texture (texture before deformation), because certain initial orientations are stable during deformation. The present paper reports on similar work performed on bcc iron. In this case it was clear at the outset that there was no hope of controlling the deformation texture, which is one in which <110> directions are aligned parallel to the wire axis. (1t has usually been regarded as a fiber texture, but Leber2 has recently shown that it is a cylindrical texture of the type {001} <110>. In either case, <110> directions are parallel to the wire axis.) There is general agreement on this texture among a large number of investigators, which in itself suggests that the starting texture has no influence on the deformation texture. More direct evidence was produced by Barrett and Levenson,3 who reported that iron single crystals of widely varying initial orientations all had a single <110> texture when cold-worked into wire. Thus <110> is a truly stable end orientation for iron and probably for other bcc metals as well. Under these circumstances attention was directed to the possibility of controlling the recrystallization texture. This texture is normally <110> in iron,4 just like the deformation texture. However, it is conceivable that this texture could be modified by a proper choice of the time, the temperature, and what might loosely be called the "environment" of the recrystallization heat treatment. In the present work the environmental factor studied was a magnetic field. The effect of heating in a magnetic field ("magnetic annealing") on recrystallization texture has been investigated by Smoluchowski and Turner.5 They found that a magnetic field produced certain changes in the recrystallization texture of a cold-rolled Fe-Co alloy. The texture of this material is normally a mixture of three components, and the effect of the field was to increase the amount of one component at the expense of the other two. Smoluchowski and Turner concluded that the effect was due to magnetostriction. With the applied field parallel to the rolling direction, the observed effect was an increase in the amount of the texture component which had <110> parallel to the rolling direction. In the Fe-Co alloy they studied, the magnetostriction is low in the <110> direction and high in the <100> direction. Thus nuclei oriented with <110> parallel to the rolling direction will have less strain energy than those with <100> orientations and will therefore be more likely to grow. In a later paper on the same subject, Sawyer and Smoluchowski6 ascribed the effect to magneto-crystalline anisotropy and made no mention of magnetostriction. In the papers of Smoluchowski et al. the intensity of the magnetic field was not reported but it was presumably large, inasmuch as it was produced by an electromagnet. In the second paper6 it is specifically mentioned that the specimens were magnetically saturated. But if magnetostriction has a selective action on the genesis of stable nuclei during recrystallization, that selectivity must depend only on differences in magneto-strictive strains between different crystal orientations and not on the absolute values of those strains. Thus the saturated state does not necessarily produce the greatest selectivity, because the relative difference in magnetostrictive strains between different crystal directions may be larger for partially magnetized crystals than for fully saturated ones.7 In the present work the specimens were subjected to relatively weak fields (0 to 100 oe) produced by solenoids. MATERIALS AND METHODS Armco ingot iron rod (containing 0.02 pct C and 0.19 pct other impurities) was swaged from 0.25 in. in diam. to 0.05 in., a reduction in area of 96 pct. The electrolytic separation of silver and gold has been practiced by the refineries in the United States for a good many years, and probably because of frequent visiting between officials of plants and the consequent exchange of views, operations in the various silver and gold refineries are very similar. We find, for instance, they practically all use electrolytes of approximately the same composition, which, no doubt, is more the result of experience than of studies of electrolytes. At the new electrolytic parting plant of the U. S. S. Lead Refinery, Inc., East Chicago, Ind., considerable attention has been given to the composition of electrolytes, especially to their conductivity and their effect on the character of the silver deposit. We are not aware that anything has been recently published on this subject and are, therefore, presenting such data as we have with the idea that, although it will not be wholly new, it may stimulate interest in the subject. Effect of Copper Content on Conductivity The first work was to determine the specific conductivity of silver nitrate and copper nitrate solutions. Concentrated solutions of silver nitrate and copper nitrate were prepared by dissolving analyzed chemically-pure salts in distilled water, and determining the silver and copper in each. Definite amounts of the concentrated solutions were taken, mixed and diluted to a definite volume. The silver and the copper were determined in each of these solutions and the conductivity was then determined. The plotted results are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The effect of increasing quantities of silver and copper is readily seen. A comparison of the two sets of curves shows conclusively the benefit of holding the copper content of the electrolyte above 5C g. per liter, as its effect is to increase greatly the conductivity in an approximate propor-

G. SHERBURNE LAGERS (written discussion*).-Mr. Kennedy&apos;s discussion1 of Mr. Matteson&apos;s paper takes the form of a criticism of my own comments2 on this paper. Mr. Kennedy is a respected authority on matters pertaining to the salt-dome oil fields, and his characterization of my "elaborate figures" as "worthless" is sufficiently candid and comprehensive to warrant a brief reply. My "voluminous figures" consisted simply of a rough estimate of the minimum quantity of salt in the Humble dome, and a calculation of the volume of sea water and of the volume of saturated brine which this salt would represent. Mr. Kennedy apparently interprets my remarks as opposing the idea that so large a volume of salt could have been deposited from sea water, for lie cites the area and thickness of European salt beds; but nothing was further from my intention. Given an arm of the sea, an arid climate, and evaporation under a hot sun, it is easy to conceive the formation: of almost any thickness of bedded salt. I cited the figures in connection with Harris&apos; theory of the origin of salt domes, according to which the plugs were formed by the deposition of salt from ascending brine solutions, owing to the drop in temperature as they neared the surface. I pointed out the well-known fact that the solubility of salt is only slightly affected by temperature, and that a drop of 80° C. would cause the deposition of less than one-tenth of the salt in solution; hence that more than ten times the volume of salt actually forming the plug must have been involved. If ten times the salt actually in sight be computed in terms of brine and multiplied by 50 or 60 to take into account all of the known salt domes, the resulting figure is so enormous that I am not at all as sure as Mr. Kennedy seems to be that the porous stratified rocks of eastern Texas and western Louisiana could contain or furnish so great a volume of migratory brine.

UNEXPECTED brittle failures of metals in practical applications are a serious problem to many industries and to the nation as a whole. Considerable effort has been devoted to studies of the brittle behavior in metals. However, the major portion of this effort has been directed at developing techniques and apparatus for the purposes of determining the susceptibility of metals to brittle failure and of making various types of observations of the phenomena. Relatively minor effort has been made to understand the basic mechanisms involved in initiating brittle failures. A more complete understanding of the nature and mechanism of the brittle failure problem would be very helpful in efforts directed toward predicting and avoiding brittle failure and toward the development of suitable materials and designs that are not susceptible to a brittle behavior. The intent of the present investigation is to acquire this basic understanding. The pronounced transition from a ductile-to-brittle behavior is most prevalent in metals having the body-centered-cubic lattice structure, primarily be- cause metals of this structure exhibit a strong dependence of yield strength upon temperature and the rate of straining. The generally recognized qualitative concept of the ductile-to-brittle transition is that brittle (cleavage) failure occurs when the yield strength exceeds the cleavage fracture strength. This condition can apparently be achieved by decreasing temperature or increasing strain rate. Likewise, a normally ductile metal can be made to fracture in an apparently brittle manner by the introduction of triaxial stresses (notches) where the ratio of normal to shear stresses can be increased to such an extent that the normal stress exceeds the fracture strength before the critical shear stress for plastic flow is achieved. Neither of these concepts require any prior plastic deformation or explain why the observed fracture strengths are so much less than the theoretical cohesive strength. The results of several investigations of the ductile-to-brittle transition in body-centered-cubic metals illustrate rather conclusively that measurable amounts of nonelastic deformation do precede cleavage fracture, even at extremely low temperatures. THE British are worried about the postwar possibilities of their coal mining industry. Indeed, there are causes for this worry, with the aver- age 1943 cost of production at about $5.40 per long ton, compared to $3.20 in 1938. Average production per man day has dropped from 1.12 in 1938 to 1.03 long tons in 1943. As a comparison, production per man day in the United States is approximately 5 long tons. The average day wage in the British mines is now a little aver $4; in 1938 the average day wage was about $2.25. Great Britain produced 227 million long tons in 1938 from their deep mines, and in 1943 production was 194.5 million, with an additional 4.5 million from strip mines. To meet present wartime needs, output is being supplemented by the production of strip- mined coal, an industry that did not exist prior to the war. Strip mining is now producing at the rate of 15 million long tons per year.

Platinum electrodes are not inert as often thought to be. The reactivity of platinum electrodes can explain their erratic behavior in many electrochemical measurements of metallurgical interest, e.g, in flotation systems, streaming potential measurements, contact-angle measurements, and in leaching systems. The anomalous behavior of platinum electrodes in redox potential measurements in aqueous systems was studied through Eh and pH measure ments in water-oxygen, iron-water-oxygen, and manganese-water-oxygen systems. Stability relations between Fe++ and Fe (OH), and between Fe (OH), and Fe (OH), were studied to judge the correspondence between experimental and theoretical equilibrium lines. The practicality of redox potential measurements in estimating ferric-ferrous ratios in aqueous systems was investigated along with their suitability as indicators in leaching operations, e.g., the removal of iron by aeration from manganese leach solutions. Platinum electrodes have often been used in the measurement of dissolved oxygen concentrations and of redox potentials (Eh) in a variety of fields, e.g., analytical chemistry,&apos; corrosion," geology and mineralogy,,&apos;&apos; biology,"&apos; sewage treatment,&apos; * hydrometallurgy,"I" and flotation."la The effectiveness of Eh-pH diagrams, first reported by Pourbaix&apos; in 1949, has contributed much towards the theoretical understanding of numerous problems encountered in the metallurgical industry. Not many references are available in the literature, however, wherein attempts have been made to confirm Eh-pH diagrams from experimental measurements. One reason might be that, in spite of the apparent simplicity of the electrochemical technique, the direct measurement of Eh involves complex practical problems.&apos; Factors such as the purity of the solution, the type of electrodes used, the history of the indicator electrode, and the type of atmosphere (namely, oxidizing, reducing, or inert) do have effects on the measured Eh values. The influence of mixed potentials cannot be underestimated. The poisoning of platinum electrodes by organic and inorganic impurities present in the solution may lead to erratic results. Platinum, commonly thought to be an inert electrode material, is not really so, as attested by a number of previous investigators who advised caution concerning the anomalous behavior of platinum electrodes in various electrochemical measurements.&apos;" In the present article, a few pertinent experiments related to Eh-pH measurements in systems of interest in the metallurgical and water pollution fields are described in an attempt to correlate such information with what is already known, especially in the electrochemical literature. Iron-water and manganese-water systems were selected with a view of studying the correspondence between experimentally observed and theoretically established equilibrium lines. The work included an investigation of the behavior of platinum electrodes with respect to pretreatment and adsorption characteristics, the measurement of dissolved oxygen concentrations and their relation to Eh, the determination of the electrode potential of the ferric-ferrous couple at different pH, and the measurement of oxidation potentials in iron-manganese leaching systems. Experimental Procedure A rotating platinum electrode was used in many of the measurements to study the effect of rotation on measured Eh values. The electrode made by the Pine Instrument Co. consisted of a stainless steel rod with a platinum disk soldered to the end. It was covered with a Teflon insulation along the sides, so that only the circular tip of the electrode was exposed to the solution. Prior to its use, the platinum surface was brightened on a metallurgical polishing wheel with alumina as an abrasive, unless specified otherwise. The electrode was rotated with a Sargent cone-drive motor at 350 rpm. The contact of the electrode with the external circuit was made by filling a notch at the top of the stainless steel shaft with mercury and by dipping a copper wire into the mercury pool. The performance of the rotating platinum electrode was compared with the performances of a Beckman platinum button electrode and a platinum wire electrode. All the potentials were measured with respect to a saturated calomel electrode. A saturated KC1-agar bridge was used to minimize the liquid junction potential. A Beckman Zeromatic pH meter together with a Beck-man electrode switch was used to measure both the Eh and pH. A double-walled, all-Pyrex jar with a capacity of about 1 liter and themostated by circulating water of constant temperature was used for a reaction cell. Four equally spaced ports in the cover provided access for a glass electrode, a salt bridge connecting the saturated calomel electrode, a dispersion tube for bubbling gases into the cell solution, inlet and outlet tubes for passing the desired gases over the solution, and a graduated burette for introducing reagents from outside. The rotating platinum electrode was inserted through an opening in the top-center of the cover, and a positive gas pressure was maintained inside the cell to prevent air from entering into the cell compartment. A magnetic stirrer was used to mix the solution inside. For the determination of dissolved oxygen in the test solutions, the polarographic techniquex was used.

In 1915, the State of California passed a law of great scope and importance. This law has been in successful operation for a year and may be briefly described as an act " establishing and creating a department of the State Mining Bureau for the protection of the natural resources of petroleum and gas from waste and destrucbion through improper operations in production; providing for the inspection of petroleum and gas wells; requiring all persons operating petroleum and gas wells to make certain reports" and providing the necessary officers and assessments to carry out the provisions of the act. The statute provides for a separate department of the State Mining Bureau, under the general supervision of the State mineralogist, with a staff composed of a "state oil and gas supervisor" and four deputies. It rules that all petroleum and natural gas wells shall be drilled, operated or abandoned under the supervision of the State supervisor, who shall order such tests or remedial work as seems to him necessary to protect the interests of property owners and the general public. It also provides for a board of arbitration to consider orders given by the supervisor which are not acceptable to the well owner. Section 18 of the act, which is the provision that is directly related to this paper, requires (&apos;the owner of any well referred to in this act to keep a careful and accurate log of the drilling of such well," and further requires that this log shall show the character and depth of the formations passed through or encountered in the drilling, particularly the location and depth of the water-bearing strata; the character of the water encountered (so far as ascertained); whether the water was shut off, and, if solat what point; that it shall show completely the amounts, kinds and size of casing used; the depth at which oil-bearing strata are encountered; the depth and character of the strata, and whether all water was successfully and permanently shut off so as to prevent percolation or penetration into the oil-bearing strata. The measurement of temperatures in exploratory drill holes yields information on regional and local geothermal gradients and mean surface temperatures. This data may be beneficial to the mining geologist interested in the occurrence and oxidation of metallic sulfide minerals or to the mining engineer interested in subsurface temperatures or water movement. Additionally, the estimation of mean surface temperatures by the projection of thermal gradients to the ground surface provides data on which to evaluate infrared imagery as an exploration tool. Temperature measurements in 30 diamond drill holes in the Silver Bell mining district of Arizona show that a regional geothermal gradient of 2.45°C per 100 m increases to 3.03°C per 100 m near the ground surface. It is also found that an anomaly in the mean annual surface temperature of 0.5°C is associated with the shallow occurrence of disseminated sulfides. Changes in the geothermal gradient due to topography, water circulation, and formation changes also occur.

The vapor pressures of pure iron and pure chromium have been measured using a Knudsen cell coupled with a mass spectrometer. The experimental results agree well with some previously reported data; heats of sublimation and vaporization have been calculated. From vapor pressure rr~easurernents, the activities of iron and chromium in their binary alloys have been determined for NcY = 0.10 to 0.65 over a 1400" to 1700~ temperature range. The activity of chromium in the liquid alloys was found to exhibit positive deviation from ideal behavior when referred to solid chromium as the standard state; however, for the activity of chromium referred to nonequilibrium undercooled liquid chromium as standard state, the activity behavior is almost ideal. ALTHOUGH the Fe-Cr system is important as the basic system of alloy steels, the thermodynamic properties of this system have not been thoroughly investigated at elevated temperatures. In view of the potential practical applications of such data as well as their contribution to alloy theory, further study of the Fe-Cr system was undertaken. In addition, further development of experimental techniques for equilibrium measurements at high temperature is required. The present research involved an application of the Knudsen effusion method in conjunction with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Belton and ~ruehan&apos; have measured the activities in Fe-Ni and Fe-Co alloys by a similar method. Speiser, Johnston, and lackbburn&apos; have determined the vapor pressure of pure solid chromium between 1283" and 1561°K by a Langmuir free evaporation technique. The vapor pressure of chromium was described by the expression: over the temperature range 1283" to 1561°K. McCabe, Hudson, and paxton3 have measured the vapor pressures of pure iron and pure chromium by the Knudsen cell technique around 1500°K. The vapor pressure and heat of sublimation at O°K, AH,", for pure chromium agreed within experimental error with the measurements of Speiser et al. at 1200°C. Kubaschewski and HeYmer~ determined the vapor pressure of pure solid chromium in the temperature range 1170" to 1400°C by the Knudsen effusion technique combined with a radioactive tracer analysis of crS1. Their results agreed with the work of previous investigators. Edwards, Johnston, and Ditmars5 have measured the vapor pressure of pure solid iron by the Langmuir technique between 1356" and 1519°K. The vapor pressure of solid iron in the temperature range studied was given by: The data of McCabe, Hudson, and paxton3 on the vapor pressure of pure iron around 1500°K by the Knudsen effusion technique were in good agreement with those obtained by Edwards et a~.~ Hultgren, Orr, Anderson, and Kelley give the selected values for the AH: of pure iron and pure chromium as 98,990 *200 and 94,340 * 500 cal per mole, respectively. These values are the average values determined in the several investigations by different methods. The Fe-Cr phase diagram7 is shown in Fig. 1. Previous determinations of activities in this system have been carried out by several investigators, but most of the work has been done on solid alloys. Using a Knudsen effusion method with cr5&apos;, Kubaschewski and Heymer4 reported that the Fe-Cr system exhibits positive deviation from the ideal behavior for compositions ranging from NCr = 0.0398 to 0.699 at 1170"

THERE is a growing interest in the possibilities presented by the manipulation of metal powders, which justifies an attempt to summarize their character and potential value. A summary of this kind presents an opportunity for making a classification of metal powder products into several general types. Our present knowledge of the finer and more abstract aspects of many of the principles involved in metal powder technique is extremely limited. Any conclusions as to the ultimate value of the process will, therefore, for the present at least, be of doubtful value unless they are substantiated by its products. The number of such products is increas-ing. A study of their diverse and unusual characteristics; an examination of the methods by which they ale made, and a consideration of the reactions that take place during their fabrication, in so far as we can define them, should afford as good an evaluation of this interesting development as it is possible to make at this time. A critical study of this kind results in a formidable list of special attributes, which apparently are characteristic of applied powder metal-lurgy. A comparison of these special effects with the end products and well defined limitations of the melting and casting process indicate that often they may very well be considered as being special advantages. They are subject, of course, to certain not as yet so well defined limita-tions of their own. Based on current products only, a necessarily con-densed summary of the more striking special attributes of the metal powder process follows.

A T THE meeting of the Board of Directors on June 24, Prof. Heinrich O. Hofman was elected an honorary member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Professor Hofman is best known to the world at large for his publications, and in this respect he is to this generation what Schnabel was to the previous one. The first edition of Professor Hofman&apos;s "Metallurgy of Lead and Desilverization of Base Bullion"; was published in 1893; the fifth edition in 1898. In 1913, he published his work on "General Metallurgy;" this was followed by "Metallurgy of Copper" in 1914, and a revised and enlarged edition of the "Metallurgy of Lead" in 1918. "Metallurgy of Zinc and Cadmium" is now in press. He also published, through the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, "An Outline of the Metallurgy of Iron and Steel" for students&apos; use. Since the founding of "Mineral Industry" in 1892, he has been continuously the annual contributor on the metallurgy of lead, and all Institute members know that his contributions to the TRANSACTIONS have been liberal in the extreme. It is through this medium that the results of the extensive research work, which he has always carried on in connection with his work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, have been published. Of the greatest importance are his papers dealing with the formation temperatures of slags, but many other metallurgical subjects have been covered.

The nature of the forces that are important in producing the oil in the East Texas field and the manner in which these forces are affected by the rate of production have always been problems of outstanding interest. These questions are of great interest to the industry as a whole on account of the economic importance of the East Texas field and to the engineers in particular on account of the unique character and behavior of the field. Subsurface pressure data throughout the field have been collected systematically, so that a quite complete history of the reservoir pressures has been kept as the field has been developed and produced. Subsurface samples of the oil and gas have been taken and these have been examined to obtain data on the physical properties of the reservoir fluids under the actual conditions of temperature and pressure. All of these data have been valuable because they have afforded the basis for a careful study of the means by which the oil is produced. It is the purpose of this discussion first to point out several of the important facts revealed by the data mentioned and then to describe studies that have been made concerning the interpretation of these facts. Reservoir Pressure Data and Properties of Oil The reservoir pressure data on the East Texas field have shown conclusively that the pressures are readily affected by changes in the rate at which the field is produced. This can well be seen in Fig. 1, where the average reservoir pressures obtained from time to time are plotted with the daily production rates and the cumulative production of the field. It is noted that the average reservoir pressure has declined irregularly, depending upon the rate of production, from the estimated original value of 1625 Ib. per sq. in. to the value of 1228 lb. per sq. in. observed for Aug. 11,1934. The decline in pressure has been more rapid at the higher rates of production than at the lower rates. In contrast, the average reservoir pressure has increased, on several occasions, upon reduction of the withdrawal rate from a high value to a lower value. MINERALS and mineral resources are recognized as one of the things that nations are prone to quarrel about. The territory that was arbitrarily incorporated into the Polish Republic after the World War produces a variety of essential minerals on a substantial scale. The accompanying table has been compiled to give some idea of the relative importance of this production. Poland, before the recent war started, had an area of 150,000 sq.mi., just a little larger than the State of Montana. Its population was 32,000,000, equal to that of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Though not a highly industrialized country it nevertheless has important mines, steel plants, petroleum refineries, and sundry metal-fabricating manufactories. Coal, petroleum, iron and steel, zinc, lead, pyrite, potash, and salt are produced in excess of the country&apos;s domestic consumption. It has no appreciable production of copper, chromium, tungsten, nickel, tin, mercury, manganese, aluminum, magnesite, fluorspar, or graphite.

In 1947 a large low grade deposit of uranium was located in the northwest corner of Saskatchewan, in the Beaverlodge property of Eldorado Mining & Refining Ltd. Most of the values occur as thin seams and as coatings on other minerals, and the ore, which is light and friable, is not amenable to the usual gravity methods of concentration. The acid leaching process developed to retreat the company&apos;s Port Radium tailings was also impractical, as the percentage of carbonates is high and the percentage of sulphides relatively low. Construction of the mill building and installation of equipment, both scheduled for 1952, awaited selection of a satisfactory ore dressing process on or before Oct. 1, 1951. An extensive research program on dressing of ores from the Ace mine therefore was undertaken by the Mines Branch in Ottawa, a research team at the University of British Columbia and an ore dressing group at the company&apos;s Port Hope refinery.

On Nov. 11, 1909, M. Alexandre Pourcel, of Paris, France, upon the proposal of a large number of distinguished members, and the unanimous recommendation of the Council, was elected by the Board of Directors an Honorary Member of the Institute. M. Pourcel has devoted forty-three years to the metallurgy of iron and steel ; and the work which he did between thirty and forty years ago constitutes an important part of the founda¬tion of the practice of to-day. Among his striking contribu¬tions are : (1) his perfection, in 1869, of the manufacture of high-grade ferro-manganese in a carbon-lined open-hearth furnace, instead of the costly crucibles previously used; (2) his discovery, in 1874, of the method of making solid steel cast¬ings; (3) his manufacture, in 1875, of ferro-manganese and silico-spiegel in the blast-furnace; and (4) his anticipation, in 1875, of modern American blast-furnace practice, by the pro¬duction, in a very small furnace, of Bessemer pig containing 2.5 per cent. of silicon, from a burden yielding only 46 per cent. of iron, and with a consumption, per ton of pig, of only 1,8401b. of coke, containing 15 per cent. of ash. These brilliant pioneer achievements, together with his contributions to cur¬rent technical literature, won for him the Bessemer gold medal of the Iron and Steel Institute ; the great" medal of honor," which is the highest award of the French Society of Mineral Industry, and other gold medals, as well as the distinction of honorary membership of the Comité des Forges de France, which was conferred upon him in 1891. In recent years, M. Pourcel has been instrumental, as consulting engineer of the Société de Commentry-Fourchambault, at Decazeville, France, in an extraordinary development of the manufacture of special steels. The different samples of brick examined were Grecian magnesite, American magnesite; silica brick and coke-oven tiling made in Belgium and used in retort coke-ovens. The Grecian magnesite was furnished by a New Pork party. The American magnesite and the silica brick were furnished by a manufacturing company in Pittsburgh. From these brick were made cylindrical cores, &apos;79 inches long and 15/8 inches in diameter. At one end of each was drilled a hole about 1/4-inch in diameter and 11/4 inches long, into which the thermometer was inserted during the experiment. Conductivity.—The apparatus used for determining the conductivity, as shown in Fig. 1, is a sheetriron drum, 18 inches in diameter and 8 inches high. In the center is a little combustion-chamber with walls of split fire-brick, 39 inches square and about 6 inches high. The fire-brick, however, pass through the drum to the table on which the drum stands. The cores are placed horizontally, half-way between the top and bottom of drum and on the line of diameters at right angles.
