One of the special uses to which the electric furnace has been put recently is the melting of an alloy of nickel and cast iron for the production of electrical-resistance grids. The metal sections of these grids, Fig. 1, are quite uniform for each pattern, but there is, among the various patterns, a variety of thicknesses. The cross-sections vary from 1/2 by 3/16 in. to as small as 1/8 by 1/8 in. The electrical resistance of a perfect casting lies within 10 per cent. above or below the fixed listed resistance for each pattern. Good molding is essential to success in the making of these grids, for with absolutely correct metal, a variation of 0.01 in. in width and thickness of section on some of the patterns may mean as much as 12 or 14 per cent. variation in resistance. The service for which these castings are intended demands that the metal, even in the smallest castings, be very soft, showing an open, gray, highly graphitic structure, in order that they may be resistant to shock, and stand up well under rough usage. The metal used for this purpose is a gray iron alloyed with 4 to 5 per cent. of nickel, which element, when the composition of the alloy is correct, imparts toughness and pliability to the metal and helps to overcome the tendency of metal to run white and become brittle because of the rapid cooling action of the sand mold. When cold, these castings can be twisted into various shapes, taking a permanent set without breaking. The alloy has approximately double the e1etrical resistance of ordinary cast iron. Decarburization in the Fe-C system by oxygen top blowing has been studied in laboratory -scale experiments. It is shown that equilibrium models fail to explain or predict either the course of refining or endpoint conditions, giving results which either are incompatible with the chemistry of the system or do not satisfy material balance requirements. Also the path of decarburization was found to vary even for heats made under apparently identica1 conditions. A promising approach to analyzing the decarburization results is to relate oxygen efficiency fm carbon removal to bath carbon content. This relationship for Fe-C heats shows the same range of oxygen efficiencies as is obtained in pilot-plant and commercial heats using hot metal-scrap charges. This implies that oxygen transfer is primarily controlled by the decarburization reaction itself, independent of other refining reactions. Therefore, it should be possible to study separately decarburization and slag-metal reactions. DECARBURIZATION is probably the most important reaction in steelmaking. Not only is it a main reaction in the refining of iron to steel but it also provides the stirring action in the bath necessary for the diffusion processes to proceed at reasonable rates so as to make a steelmaking process practical. Kinetics of decarburization in the open-hearth process has been a subject of investigation for many years.&apos;-B It is generally accepted that at steelmaking temperatures the rate of homogeneous C-0 reaction is extremely high and cannot constitute a rate-controlling step. Diffusion of oxygen through a boundary film in the metal phase has been suggested by arken&apos; as rate-determining. Recently, Larsen and sordah16 concluded from experiments in a laboratory furnace that, with oxygen supplied from air or combustion gases, the rate of "steady-state" carbon boil is controlled essentially by a diffusion process of O2, Co2, or H2O through a film of nitrogen above the slag surface. Displacing this diffusion film by a stream of nearly pure oxygen produced a ten-fold increase in the rate of carbon boil with the rates of slag-metal oxygen transfer, bubble nucle-ation, and other steps all apparently able to keep pace. In the top-blown basic oxygen process, however, the transport of oxygen takes a more direct route. and the state of bath agitation is much more turbulent than in the open-hearth process. In addition, direct contact of the gas with the metal phase provides opportunity for direct oxidation of carbon. It is likely that the rate-limiting factor for the decarburization reaction will be different. However, only a few descriptive discussions of the subject have been reported in the literature.10-l2 Studies of the decarburization kinetics based on plant or pilot-plant data are necessarily complicated and are influenced by other refining reactions which occur simultaneously. In order to investigate the mechanism of decarburization, experiments have been conducted in which carbon-saturated iron melts were top-blown with pure oxygen over a range of conditions. It is hoped that this study will form a foundation on which a more basic understanding of this important reaction may be built. EXPERIMENTS One group of blowing experiments was made in a standard 200-lb induction furnace and another group in a 500-lb induction furnace. The furnaces were modified to the general shape of a basic oxygen furnace by adding a rammed refractory cone section to the regular crucible body. Crucible and cone were of high MgO (95 pct) material. A water-cooled lance, 1/2 in. in diam and threaded at one end to take a nozzle, was used for blowing oxygen. The lance with its water and oxygen lines was supported on a cantilever arrangement so that it could be moved up, down, or sideways. Oxygen of 99.5 pct purity was supplied from a cylinder and metered through a rotameter equipped with pressure and temperature gages. Another pressure gage was located at the top of the lance. A schematic diagram of the assembly is shown in Fig. 1. Before each experiment, a weighed amount of ingot iron, containing 0.02 pct C, < 0.01 pct Si, 0.10 pct Mn, 0.019 pct P, and 0.015 pct S, was charged in the furnace and melted down by induction heating. FOR the third consecutive year, I have collected the data on enrolment and employment of graduates from the schools in. the United States and Canada that grant degrees in mineral technology. The data were collected in the same way as formerly; namely, by questionnaire, dated Jan. 5, 1935, and are therefore comparable with the figures reported for former years. This year, along with the names of the 48 schools in the United States and the six in Canada, are listed the courses offered and the degrees granted by each, school, together with the names of the professors in charge. The names and addresses of the four schools in Mexico are also given. The list is on pages 450-1, which should he valued as a directory by those interested in mineral technology education. So far as is known, this is the most complete and up-to-date list that has ever been published.

When examining a coal property it is customary for the engineer to take channel samples at several coal faces. In doing so the extraneous matter, or partings, which can be removed by hand, or mechanically, with the facilities at hand, or proposed, is rejected. Where there is doubt concerning a stratum it is usually rejected from the main sample but part is taken for separate analysis. The samples are forwarded to a chemist for proximate analyses and determination of British thermal units, and, sometimes, ash fusion. Consideration is given all available commercial analyses but frequently the owner presents only the favorable ones. From the results thus obtained a general evaluation is made, monies are loaned or expended, markets are determined, and realization is estimated. In many instances, such grades are not substantiated and it is time we looked deeper for a basis which will prove more practical. Institute committees are working hard on analytic and use classifications and much valuable information has already been assembled and distributed. However, no single grade can be applied to any particular bed or region. Much study has been given the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam, yet that bed is subject to material differences in a single section;i. e., some strata of a face may differ from others in structure and analysis, particularly in sulfur content. From some localities it yields a good carbonization fuel, while in others it is chemically unfit for such use. Traveling south to the Logan, W. Va., field we find the Cedar Grove (Island Creek) seam a hard, gray splint coal., In the same field, and not far distant, the same bed changes, both structurally and chemically, and consists of excellent gas coal. In Illinois the moisture content of a bed may vary greatly in different localities. We have seen mines in which part of the coal is excellent for special purpose use but is spoiled by the product from another part of the same mine. Many other illustrations could be given but these are sufficient to show that application of any grading of coal must be distinctly local. Problems relating to thermal methods of oil recovery have been given increasing attention during the past year. The nature of the physical and chemical processes underlying thermal recovery are not yet well understood. The need for pertinent basic information is recognized generally. One of the processes involved is the transfer of heat by conduction in oil reservoir rocks containing moving reservoir fluids. This technical note deals with heat conduction in a laboratory sand column filled with a moving hydrocarbon and therefore should be contributory to the presently inadequate fund of knowledge on thc over-all subject. In an analysis of the flow of vaporiziny propane through a horizontal column of sand, one of the present author9 demonstrated correspondence between thc measured values of pressure along the length of the column and those predicted by a theory which postulated that the enthalpy of the propane was invariable along the length of the column. This postulate way implied as a deduction from the principle of conservation of energy but the details of the deduction were not given. The specific purpose of this technical note is the presentation of these details both as an adjunct to the earlier analysis and to supply some additional details on the processes involved in this type of flow. Results disclose that rates of heat transfer by conduction, in the direction of fluid motion, generally would be small for systems of the type studied. FUNDARIENrAI. ENERGY EiQUAI-[ON The principle of conservation of energy may be applied to a section of the porous material on the basis that heat transfer, like fluid flow, is possible in the x direction only. Transfer of heat in the y and z di&apos;rections is prevented by suitable insulation or by taking the medium as infinite in directions perpendicular to the x axis. For steady state heat conduction and conditions of steady fluid flow the principle of conservation of energy specifies that any reduction in the enthalpy rate increases the flow of heat in the same proportion. TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION IN DIRECTION OF FLOW The column of sand used in the previoi~sly described research is divisible into three different flow regimes. each of which may be analyzed independently. In the entrance region the liquid approaches the saturation state. A transition region is postulated following the transverse section at which the saturation state of the liquid is attained. In this transition region gas and liquid phases are both envisioned as present, with no vaporization occurring and with fluid movement restricted to the liquid. The upstream end of the exit region is at the transverse section of the column where the fraction of the pore space occupied by gas first becomes great enough for gas flow and where vaporization of the liquid begins. Fig. 1 indicates schematicaHy the thermodynamic processes undergone hv the fluid in the three flow regimes.

Much work has been done recently in an attempt to analyze the physicochemical mechanism involved in the production of steel by the open-hearth process. This has resulted in reducing the process to a series of interrelated phenomena obeying the usual laws of mass action and diffusion. Of these, the reaction of the iron oxide and carbon in the molten steel is of most interest from a technical point of view as it constitutes the main action in the usual steelmaking processes. A. L. Feild&apos; has formulated a basic differential equation expressing the open-hearth reactions and Herty has done considerable experimental work on the determination of a number of constants involved in the basic open-hearth reaction. In considering the application of the law of mass action to the reaction FeO + C + CO + Fe, the iron will be taken as constant, as is the case in the open hearth and the carbon monoxide pressure will be assumed constant at one atmosphere. From this xy = m at equilibrium, where x is the percentage weight of carbon, y percentage weight of iron oxide and m the weight-concentration equilibrium constant. While it is customary for physical chemists to express equilibrium constants in terms of molar concentrations, the constant is here expressed as the product of the percentage-weight concentrations for ease of comparison with the constants quoted by Herty and by Beild, and for more ready applicability to the open-hearth reactions. Herty and his associates have attempted to calculate the value of this constant from data on open-hearth heats. So many variables affect these results that an adequate calculation presents very great difficulties. A value of 4 X lop2 was first arrived at, but this was later changed to 1.6 X 10-2. Feild, in order-to illustrate the operation of the differential equation of the open hearth, has assumed a value considerably lower than Herty&apos;s, namely, 1.0 X 10-2, the largest value consistent with certain theoretical

It is usual practice in the copper industry to use open horizontal molds for casting tough-pitch copper wire bars.&apos; A wire bar cast in this manner is partly characterized by heavy wrinkles and a comparatively deep skin of oxide on the top of the bar, corresponding to the open side of the mold. On the theory that the rough, high-oxide surface might have an adverse effect on the rolling and drawing properties of a wire bar and might account for some of the irregularities of mill behavior, several bars which had been planed to remove the wrinkled surface were processed into wire. These bars responded to mill treatment more satisfactorily than did the regular wire bars. Realizing that machining the surface of one face of each bar would not be commercially feasible, it was decided that casting the metal into a vertical mold and cropping off the pouring end would accomplish approximately the same result. Several wire bars of commercial size (250 Ib.) were so cast and processed into wire for comparative test with bars cast in the usual horizontal molds. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results obtained from this investigation, in which commercial bar sizes and processing technique were used throughout. The results show that in general copper wire bars cast vertically are superior to those cast horizontally. Experimental Procedure A horizontally cast bar and a vertically cast bar were obtained from each of several regular reverberatory furnace heats of copper which had been refined and poled to tough-pitch metal in accordance with usual methods.&apos; Both bars were cast from the same part of the melt and within five minutes of each other, in order to produce as nearly as possible, in each case, wire bars of identical composition.

Cook, Pottstown, Pa.:—Many friends and acquaintances seem to be under the impression that the Warwick Iron & Steel Co. received a&apos; license from Mr. Gayley, free of cost, as an inducement to adopt the process. This impression is not correct, since the license was paid for, and I think it was the first payment that Mr. Gayley received for the use of his process. As president of the Warwick Iron & Steel Co., I am responsible for its earnings, and with only the experience at the Isabella furnaces as a guide, the directors of the company considered that there was a great risk in expending the large sum of money required for the plant. They, however, acted favorably upon my recommendation, and to this extent I am responsible for the installation at the Warwick furnaces. I made the best agreement possible with Mr. Gayley, and naturally our company received certain advantages. It will be contrary to all experience if subsequent plants do not show some improvements and economies in construction. It is to our indirect benefit that all subsequent licenses granted by Mr. Gayley should be charged at a much higher rate than we paid; and I trust that he will see to it that all such licenses granted, especially to companies making merchant iron, shall be at a maximum figure. The Warwick Iron & Steel Go. is not interested in any way in exploiting the merits of the Gayley dry-blast process; on the contrary, looking at the subject from a narrow and selfish standpoint, it is to the advantage of our company that no merchant blast-furnace competing with our iron-product should be equipped with a dry-blast plant. On the basis of experiments con- ducted on quartz using a bubble pick-up method, it was shown in an earlier paper1 that this mineral will preferentially adsorb hydrogen, calcium, or sodium ions, depending on the relative concentrations of those ions in the solution in which the quartz is immersed. For quartz particles ranging in size from 0.2 to 1 mm, it was demonstrated that the concentration of calcium in solution (assumed present as ions) necessary to completely activate quartz for flotation is given by the expression: In this expression, ionic concentrations are in mols per liter. It was further shown that the pick-up method is apparently more sensitive to changes in reagent concentration than the standard captive-bubble method, and that induction times are apparently much reduced. Since completing these earlier tests, a new type of cell has been constructed; this is shown in Fig 1 and 2. In Fig 1, A is a ground joint, B is a ceutral tube reaching to within a few millimeters of the bottom of the cell, and C is a stopper which may be removed for re- agent addition, and serves the further purpose of excluding carbon dioxide from the air during the test. The entire cell is constructed of Pyrex glass, and does not give the trouble experienced with the earlier cell, in which activating ions were released from the glass at high pH values. INTRODUCTION. THE Park City mining-district is distinctively a camp of few properties, 5,000 acres, or one-third of the entire district, being under the management of but three companies. As a rule, the ore-bodies lie deep, with no outcrop, except where erosion has formed the deeper canyons and gulches. Ontario canyon exposed the famous Ontario ledge, and Woodside gulch showed the first ore of the Silver King Coalition mine. The Quincy ore-bodies were first brought to light in upper Empire canyon, and Thaynes canyon was instrumental in aiding the prospector during the early days of the camp. There are 22 shafts which have reached a depth of at least 500 ft., ten a depth of 1,000 ft., five a depth of 1,300 ft., and two a depth of 2,000 ft. The amount of lateral development has been proportionally extensive, including six long tunnels, four of which are in 3 miles, with a fifth now being driven. The Ontario lower drain-tunnel is now more than 4 miles long. The formations are sedimentary, dipping about 30° NW. and N., and traversed by many fissures, dikes, and faults. The principal ore-bodies are found associated either with the contact of the basal Ontario quartzite and the overlying limes, or on a quartzite stratum within the limes, or in the fissures, or along some of the porphyry dikes. The district covers the intersection of the Uintah and Wasatch ranges, which explains the existence of large folds and faults, and fissures of great length, width, and depth. In a general way, the geology of the district consists of a basal quartzite dome, which has been exposed by erosion at the Ontario property. The Ontario fissure lies entirely within this formation. The alternate processes by which solute atoms can limit the migration of grain boundaries have been considered. At the lowest solute concentrations the controlling process is "mechanical breakaway" in which the solute atoms affect the driving force and not the mobility. In the next higher range of solute concentration, solute atoms are bound to the boundary and diffuse by boundary diffusion along cusps in the boundary developed at the solute atoms. In this region the boundary velocity is controlled by the component in the direction of boundary migration of the rate at which the bound solute atoms can diffuse along the boundary. At still higher concentrations, it is predicted that boundaries break away from the binding solute atoms by thermal activation. The specific behavior Predicted is consistent with the observations of Aust and Rutter. The most striking agreement between prediction and experiment is that obtained for a range of solute concentration in which the boundary velocity is inversely proportional to the cube power of the solute concentration. MaNY models have been devised for the atomic steps in the motion of a grain boundary. McLean1 has listed some of these models and Aust and utter&apos; have evaluated these and other models. The attention which this process has attracted, especially in Europe, has led me to believe that members of the Institute would be interested in a report of the progress which has been made in the year and a half that has elapsed since my paper on the subject was read at the Colorado Meeting of this Institute. As already described in that paper (Duns., xxvi., 380), this process is a modificatioii of the open-hearth steel manufacture, whether acid or basic, collsistillg essentially in the division of the charge between two furnaces, one of which is charged about two hours earlier than the other, and tapped into the other after the charge in the latter has become fluid, the slag of the first bath being removed from it during the transfer. This description still remains true as far as it goes, but further experience has demonstrated that circumstances will very materially modify the relation of the two furnaces to each other, and the character of the work done in each of them. The function of the primary furnace has become more clearly and entirely that of doing the rough work of desiliconiziug and dephosphorizing, while that of the second or finishing-furnace has become almost entirely that of decarburizing and finighing the heat. To indicate these developments and their results is the object of this paper. In order to avoid needless repetition, I shall try to accomplish part of this object by giving a short resume&apos; of what has been published elsewhere on this subject since my former paper was read. This will at least enable those interested to study the matter for themselves from original sources. Gas dehydration plays an important part in the production of natural gas. Effective dehydration prevents formation of gas hydrates and the accumulation of water in transmission Systems,2,6,7 insuring uninterrupted gas deliveries at maximum efficiency under the most adverse weather conditions. At the present time, most gas companies require a maximum water vapor content of seven lb per million standard cu ft of gas. so that virtually all gas tendered for sale must he dehydrated to meet this specification. For a number of years it has been common practice to produce gas and gather it at a common point for dehydration prior to discharge into the transmission system.1,3,11,16,17 However, higher transmission line pressures, long gathering lines and relatively low ground temperatures have made it necessary to dehydrate gas at. or near. individual. wells in order to gather gas from a number of newly developed fields without unusual difficulty. Where gas has been dehydrated at pressures ranging from 300 to 800 psi in the past. future trends indicate that these processes may be operated at pressures as high as 2,000 psi. Economics of gas dehydration are of great importance, partitularly where facilities must he provided to process relatively small quantities of gas, such as the production from an individual well. Although the adsorption of water vapor from gas on a granular sorbent material such as activated bauxite, activated alumina, or one of the alumina-silica gels is highly effective and produces virtually "bone dry" gas, the cost of a small unit of this type is substantially greater than that of an absorption process which, through proper selection of the absorbing liquid, will dehydrate the gas sufficiently to meet pipe line specifications. For this reason, a great deal of emphacis has been placed on the development of small, inexpensive dehydration units8,24 and the search for more effective absorb. ent liquids has been intensified. A wide variety of methods for dehydrating gas are known&apos; and many of these have been used in industry. Earlier applications of the absorption process employed concentrated solutions of calcium and lithium chlorides as the absorbent. The severe corrosion problems inherent in handling these solutions and the relatively small dew point depressions obtained caused early abandonment in favor of, or conversion to. diethylene glycol when it was found that aqueous solutions of this organic liquid were more hygroscopic than the brines and were non-corrosive. Processes employing diethylene glycol-water solutions are widely used for gas dehydration at pressures ranging as high as 1,200 psi.13,14,15 At nominal pressures a dew point depression of 45° to 50°F may be be and the data of Russell et al." indicate that a minimum dew point is obtained from the effluent gas at a pressure of approximately 1,200 psi when the gas is in equilibrium contact with a 95 per cent by weight diethylene glycol solution. In a number of instances the dew point depression obtained with diethylene glycol-water solutions is not sufficient to produce a specification product without cooling the inlet gas. In a recent search for a better absorhent, triethylene glycol was used in a small commercial dehydration unit and subjected to rather exhaustive field tests.&apos; The data obtained were encouraging and indicated that, at pressures ranging from 300 to 500 psi, triethylene glycol porduced a substantially greater dew point depression than diethylene glycol. These results led to an investigation of the system natural gas-water-triethylene glycol in an effort to obtain vapor-liquid equilibrium data, to determine pressure limitations, and to develop other data pertinent to the design of gas dehydration processes. A review of the literature has failed to reveal any data which permit reasonably accurate calculation of the vapor-liquid equilibrium conditions for a solution of water and triethylene glycol in contact with natural gas at high pressure. Since these constituents form a non-ideal system, the Poynting equation18,21 or the usual combination of Raoult&apos;s and Dalton&apos;s laws19,20,22 would not be valid. Correction of Raoult&apos;s and Dalton&apos;s laws by the use of activity coefficients2&apos; is not feasible for available data are insufficient for the prediction of the actual increase in the ratio of the activity of one component in the vapor phase to its activity in the liquid. Fullerton In coal preparation plants, as in any industrial operation where raw materials are handled, nuisance problems arising from the generation of dust are inevitable. Devices for the control or collection of dust are there- fore essential components of the plant process equipment. The general term "aerosol" is applied to small particles suspended in a gaseous medium, usually air, whose velocity under the force of gravity is small enough that the particles remain suspended for a reasonable length of time. Aerosols can be classified as dust, smokes, fumes, mists or fogs. Dust includes particles originally formed by pulverization of materials by such processes as crushing, grinding, drilling, blasting and abrasion. Smoke includes particles formed from the burning of organic materials. Fumes are particles formed by processes such as condensation and sublimation, usually at high temperatures. Mists or fogs are particles formed by the condensation of water or other vapors on some nuclei. The size of aerosol particles is generally designated in units of microns, there being 1000 microns to a millimeter and 25,400 microns to an inch. Particles of about 10 microns or above are visible to the naked eye. Table 14-1 shows size characteristics of the general classifications of particles discussed above and includes typical examples of particles commonly en- countered. Table 14-1 also shows the relationship between micron size and standard screen mesh sizes. Smoke and fume are usually in the range of 0.01 to one micron, dusts are in the range of one to 400 microns, mists are in the range of 0.1 to 100 microns, and fogs are in the range of one to 100 microns. For purposes of dust control, particles greater than 10 or 20 microns in size are considered large, particles one to 10 microns are considered fine and particles below one micron are ultrafine. Sources of Dust Because coal is relatively friable, the mining and subsequent handling operations break part of the coal into dust that can be readily carried by currents of air. In a coal preparation plant mechanical handling operations such as unloading, transferring from one belt to another, screening, cleaning, and crushing in a dry state result in the generation and release of varying amounts of additional dust. The dust problem, of course, is much less serious in plants employing entirely wet processing. • One effect of the British devaluation of the Pound Sterling, with its resultant lowering of the pay limit, was the addition of considerable tonnages of previously marginal ore in gold mining. Crown Mines, Ltd., reported that 1,245,000 tons of such ore had been added to available reserves. But for devaluation, a steady decline in ore reserves had been a feature of operations during the previous ten years, and would have continued. •Loree Colliery of the Hudson Coal Co. is using a Humphrey spiral cleaning plant to meet requirements of the state in the matter of stream pollution. However, the process is producing a salable product. •Noranda is considering plans for constructing a commercial sized unit designed to produce elemental sulphuric acid and sintered iron oxide from pyrite. Test plant results have indicated the No. 5 ore zone can be treated by the new process economically. •A magnetic fluid clutch, and magnetic amplifiers for motor and generator control, have been developed under Navy contract by Vickers&apos; Electric Division, in St. Louis, Mo. This constitutes the first commercial production of the clutch recently developed by the Bureau of Standards. •Fuel experts estimate coal production will run up to 500 million tons this year based on the expectation that business conditions will continue to be good. They also expect that in the future the use of coal will increase by 50 pct over today&apos;s level. These expectations are based on the fact that it provides the bulk of the heat, light, and power for making steel, for manufacturing, and for generating electricity as well as the development of the coal burning gas turbine and processes for making gas, gasoline, and oil from coal. •Entombed miners may benefit from a two-way communication system which utilizes the earth&apos;s strata as a network for electric signals. The use of FM radio waves makes this possible. The invention includes a portable transmitter-receiver unit kept near the face, and a more powerful portable equipment of the same sort above ground. In use, two probes on wires from the apparatus are driven into the earth. • The Union of South Africa has launched a uranium production project which government leaders think will help the West maintain world atomic supremacy. Experiments under way in the pilot plants are expected to lead to the establishment of a chain of processing factories along the Witwatersrand in which uranium will be reclaimed from gold tailing. •Recent developments in mechanized mining at the Bureau of Mines oil-shale mine near Rifle, Colo., have lowered mining costs to 29 cents per ton of shale. The cost of producing crude shale oil from 30-gal-per-ton-shale, using the new mining and processing techniques, would be about $1.50 per barrel. This is 500 lower than any previously stated price. • COMINCO is planning to open the old Bluebell lead-zinc mine near Nelson, B. C., on a 500-ton-per-day basis. The old workings will be pumped and a 970-ft incline sunk. A mill will be constructed at the property.

DEVELOPMENT of new gold mines in Canada since the price of that metal was increased in 1932 and 1933 has been of interest and importance to many of us. The day-by-day story has given an impression of aggressive effort and enough good luck so that the spirit of enterprise has been encouraged. It is the purpose of this article to report the results of a statistical appraisal which give emphatic numerical confirmation to this impression, together with certain side lights on the costs of development and equipment of new mines. The data presented have been taken from all readily available published sources up to the close of 1938 and are representative of that year. A. B. Bower did a large part .of the spadework and Weston Thomas offered many helpful suggestions.

The objectives of the investigation herein reported were to determine: (I) the S-curves for certain selected cast steels, (2) whether or not the published S-curves for wrought steels are satisfactory for use on cast steels of similar composition, and (3) to prepare hardenability curves of the selected cast steels. In order to make the final comparisons between cast and wrought steel more completely tangible, it was deemed advisable not only to determine S-curves for the steels submitted in the cast condition but also to roll some of the cast-steel test bars and determine comparison S-curves on such wrought material. This procedure eliminates the composition variable and makes it possible to reveal the differences resulting from plastic deformation of the cast structure in addition to providing the comparison with published data on wrought steels. Cast Steels The cast steels selected for the preparation of S-curves, or time-temperature transformation curves, were similar to S.A.E. series 1030, 2330, 4130 and 4330. Of these the 1030 was supplied by The Crucible Steel Casting Co., Cleveland, Ohio, and the other three by The Sawbrook Steel Castings Co., Lockland, Ohio. The steels were furnished in the as-cast condition. The manufacturers supplied the chemical analyses and the properties that could be obtained in the heat-treated condition—all of which is summarized in Table I. The principle of "bed blending" in the agglomeration of materials is about 56 years old, but de- spite all education via technical papers, operating reports and results from functioning installations, the concepts of blending are still somewhat vague. Confusion exists between "mixing", "blending," and the basic role of each. The terms "blending" and mixing" are often used interchangeably, yet they describe two different processes. As properly understood and applied, a blend is a combination of different varieties of material which produces a desired quality, or the mingling of different elements to form a harmonious whole. In other words, blending is a process of combining granular materials by mechanical means, wherein the final product, or a portion thereof, must contain an exact proportional amount of every one of the several different materials which contributed to the mass and wherein all particles are so thoroughly intermingled with each other as to have lost their individual identities and become a part of the whole so that when a portion of the blend is taken at any time it will be substantially identical, chemically and physically, to any other portion taken throughout.
