Under certain conditions of hot rolling and air cooling from the hot-rolling temperature, bars of a high carbon (0.40 pct C) chrome-nickel austen-itic alloy were found to show magnetism even though no ferrite or martensite could be detected by microscopic or X-yay methods. The appearance of magnetism in such alloys may come from chromium impoverishment of the austenite grains near the precipitated carbide particles. SPORADICALLY, hot-rolled bars of Silchrome 10, an exhaust valve steel, have been found to be magnetic. Because of the analysis of the alloy—0.40 pct C, 18 pct Cr, 8 pct Ni, 3 pct Si —magnetism is unexpected. Preliminary investigation showed neither martensite nor ferrite to be present; only austenite and Cr23C6. Since a literature search was fruitless, a brief study was made of the appearance of magnetism in this alloy. The only basic difference between the two heats is the nitrogen content. Permeability was measured using a Severn magnetic gauge. This instrument consists of a magnet mounted on a counterbalanced arm. A set of calibrated plugs is placed in contact with one pole of the magnet. The specimen is placed close to the other pole of the magnet. If the specimen pulls the magnet away from the plug, it has a permeability greater than that marked on the plug. This technique is swift and reproducible. Previous experience has shown that the permeabilities obtained corresponded to those obtained on a permeater with a field strength of 100 oe. Specimens from both heats were annealed at temperatures between 1700 and 2300°F. One set of specimens was water cooled and another furnace cooled. All the water-quenched specimens were non-magnetic; the furnace cooled ones were magnetic as shown in Table I with no difference being observed between the two heats. Microstructural examination of the specimens showed the expected increase in carbon solubility with increasing temperature. Carbide solution was complete at 2200°F. The specimens heated to 1900°F or below showed some carbide precipitation from the hot-rolled structure. A furnace cooled specimen from a given temperature showed less carbide out of solution than the water-quenched specimen from the next temperature below; e.g., the specimen furnace cooled from 2100°F showed less carbide out of solution than the water-quenched specimen from 2000" F. These studies indicated that the appearance of magnetism was not related to the quantity of carbon in or out of solution and it was related to precipitation at temperatures below 1700" F. A set of samples annealed and water-quenched from 2100° F was aged for 4 hr at temperatures between 1000" and 1600°F; all were non-magnetic. A second set of samples, similarly annealed, was aged 1 to 24 hr at 1200°F with the results shown in Table II. None of the latter set of specimens showed magnetism until they had been aged about 8 hr. Magnetism was quite strong after aging 24 hr. X-ray diffraction studies on several of the magnetic specimens showed that the austenite had a lattice parameter of 3.58A and that the carbide was Cr23C6. Several of these samples were electrolytically digested in 10 pct HCl in ethanol, with a current density of 0.1 amp per sq cm. None of the particles in the residue were magnetic. Accidentally, one cell was run at 1 amp per sq cm; e.g., magnetic particles were found in this residue. After careful separation, the magnetic particles were mounted on a quartz fiber and their diffraction pattern determined using a 5.73-in. Debye-Sherrer camera with CrK radiation. These particles showed a fcc structure with a lattice parameter of 3.57A. Prolonged exposure, up to 16 hr, produced no other lines on the film. The following facts seemed to be established at this time: 1) Austenite was the magnetic phase. 2) Neither ferrite nor martensite could be detected. 3) Magnetization could be produced by aging at 1200°F. One explanation of these data is that the carbide precipitation impoverishes the region immediately around the carbide particle of carbon and chromium and increases the proportion of nickel. All of these serve to increase the Curie temperature of the region around the carbide particle. If the composition change is enough, the Curie temperature will rise above room temperature. If the volume of the affected region is great enough, the magnetism will become detectable. At low aging temperatures, composition changes are great enough but the overall volume of impoverishment is quite small

The Thunder Mountain mining district is in eastern Valley County, Idaho. It is of undefined extent but nearly all of the development is confined to the ridge between Monumental and Marble creeks in unsurveyed T. 19 N., R. 11 E. (Fig. 1.) The district is still remembered among the mining men of Idaho because of the ill-advised rush there in 1902, but available evidence indicates that optimism regard-ing the future development of the gold deposits of the district is warranted. The former disappointment arose from the fact that many who took part in the early rush hoped for bonanza deposits, whereas the district is characterized by large masses of low tenor. In 1926 the writer,, assisted by C. Y. Behre, 3r., incidental to other work in the region, devoted four days to the detailed examination of the then access-ible workings in the district. Tha major workings in the Sunnyside, Venable, Standard and H-Y mines, most of which were still in good shape, were examined., Surface exposures at the Dewey were studied, but the main workings there have long been caved. The time available did not permit more than a cursory examination of the surface at a distance from the mines. Sufficient data have been gathered, how-ever, from published and unpublished accounts, production records and mine maps so that the major features of this deposit, by far the most productive in the dis-trict, can be summarized. The kindness of Messrs. Dan McRae and R: A. Davis in making available information regarding the mines of the district, a rd of these men and others in recounting early history and their observations in now inaccessible workings, have aided materially in preparing the present paper. A brief summary of the salient characteristics of the district has already been published.1/ Cir-cumstances have contributed to delay in the publication of the full official report, which will contain mine maps and ?such other detailed data as could be ontained. In view of the present interest in gold deposits it seems desirable to present here a summary of results of the study.

The Boston and Colorado Smelting Works are situated in the town of Black Hawk, Gilpin County, Colorado, on the Clear Creek Narrow Gauge Railway, 55 miles from Denver, in the Rocky Mountains, at an altitude of 7800 feet. It was one of the first works erected for the metallurgical treatment of gold ores, and the only one established in Colorado on a large scale which has been uniformly successful. Both gold and silver ores are treated, and gold, silver, and copper produced. The lead is not separated from the ores nor paid for, if it exists, and is entirely lost in the residues. The works were planned and built by Professor Hill, formerly Professor of Chemistry in Brown University, Providence, R. I., and is still managed by him, assisted by Mr. Richard Pearce, formerly professor in the School of Mines at Truro, England. They are very advantageously situated with regard to the ore-producing regions, having Boulder County on the north, which produces, besides ordinary gold ores, a series of tellurium minerals, such as altaite, sylvanite, and hessite, which are very rich in gold and silver. They are associated with copper and iron pyrites, blende, galena, and the carbonate and oxides of iron. Gilpin County itself produces for the most part the pyrites of iron and copper rich in gold, with a small quantity of galena and blende, which is rich in silver. In

STEEL as it is poured, or teemed, into the mold for forming the ingot may be broadly separated into two divisions; i.e., effervescing or gassy steel, also termed evolution steel, and non-effervescing or killed steel, also termed solution steel. Between these primary divisions there are various types having the characteristics of both divisions but really not belonging to either; such steels are termed semi-piping, rising, or wild, as the type may be. True unkilled, or effervescing, steel should contain large volumes of gases, which are evolved while the metal is being teemed, or cast from the ladle nozzle into the mold, and while the temperature of the steel is being reduced prior to the solidification or freezing of the steel, the upper portion, or top, of the ingot remaining liquid due to the evolution of gases until an ingot skin of considerable thickness has been formed. These gases consist principally of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, and ammonia. It is generally understood that nitrogen gases are the first evolved and form the skin blowholes, at times troublesome, in the forming solidifying ingot. Ingots made of effervescing steel will always contain a large number of blowholes. Such blowholes are not deemed objectionable in various products if they occur well within the interior of the ingot where they will not be subject to oxidation upon the ingot's cooling and subsequent re-heating and rolling or forging. Very little top or bottom discard is taken from this type of ingot as pipes, or large shrinkage cavities, at the upper portion of the ingot do not usually occur, the difference in volume between the liquid and the solid steel (6 to 10 per cent.) being compensated for by the innumerable blowholes distributed throughout the body of the , ingot. Of the 40,000,000 tons of steel made in the United States during the year 1919, at least 35,000,000 tons of ingots were made of gassy or semi-gassy steel. Killed, or solution, steel is termed true piping steel from the characteristic pipe or shrinkage cavity that usually occurs in the uppermost central portion of the ingot.

The 64th Texas Legislature passed the "Texas Surface Mining and Reclamation Act," Chapter 131, Texas Natural Resources Code (subsequently referred to as "the Act"), at a point in time when little surface mining had taken place within the state. Thus, enactment of regulatory control governing mining operations in our state has, for the most part, preceded widespread, intensive mining activity. I should point out that the statute applies only to the extraction of coal, lignite, uranium and uranium ore. A recent opinion rendered by the Attorney General's office has stated that extraction of the named elements, when it occurs incidental to the extraction of other materials, e.g., clay, is not not an activity subject to the Act. An important theme of the Act, frequently overlooked in other environmentally oriented legislation, is recognition of the Act's affect on the mining industry. The Act states that "the extraction of minerals by surface mining operations is a basic and essential activity making an important contribution to the economic well-being of the state and nation" and, in reference to reclamation being accomplished contemporaneously with mining, provides a recognition that "the extraction of minerals by responsible mining operations is an essential and beneficial economic activity." This legislative recognition is, of course balanced against the need for proper mined land reclamation, the rights of surface owners, the need to guard against unreasonable degradation to land and water resources and numerous other actions or events that the Legislature wanted protected. Another rather pervasive general theme that is established in the Act is the concept that the agency is entitled to obtain whatever information, or take whatever action, that appears reasonably necessary to effectuate the purposes of the Act. This concept, coupled with the detailed requirements placed on mining operations in the portions of the Act dealing with Permit Applications, Reclamation Plan and Reclamation Standards, easily insures that surface mining activities can and will be regulated to the extent necessary. Section 131.102(b)(2) is probably the most relevant provision in the Act which deals with the preclusion of mined lands becoming waste lands. This portion of the Act states that the surface mining operator shall: ". . . restore the land affected to the same or a substantially beneficial condition. ." In this language the Legislature had made it abundantly clear that the abandoned or orphaned lands found in some of the Eastern states, will not be tolerated in this State, and provided the Commission with a degree of latitude to determine what condition would be appropriate in each individual mining situation. I bring this area of the Act to your attention because it is the area which has received the most inquiries and concern by operators, i.e. what does "substantially beneficial" constitute? The Commission's staff has spent a considerable amount of time wrestling with the statutory language "substantially beneficial" to determine the legislative intent and provide operators with guidance of what they can expect. In this regard, the most definitive criteria in our opinion lies in the Act's legislative hsitory. The Legislature had before it basically three reclamation standards namely: House Bill 656, considered to provide the most stringent reclamation standard and identical to Senate Bill 66; House Bill 1717 which was supported by industry spokesmen and was considered to contain the least stringent reclamation standard; and Senate Bill 55 which was adopted by the Legislature. During the Bill's initial hearing before the House Environmental Affairs Committee, the House sponsor of the Senate Bill 55, which was the Bill eventually adopted, made the following statement: (I am quoting verbatim from the Committee's transcript although substituting the speaker's reference to the authors names with the Bill's numbers.) "An example of the differing approaches of the four bills can be seen in the area of reclamation standards and this is critical. House Bill 656, talking about restoring the surface of the land, House Bill 656 has this statement: 'At least fully capable of supporting the use to which it was capable of supporting prior to any mining or any higher or better use.' In other words you have to restore it to the level it was prior to the mining. Senate Bill 55: 'Restore the land to the same or substantially beneficial use.' Substantially beneficial use. (Emphasis his) House Bill 1717 says: 'Restore insofar as practical to appropriate beneficial post-mining use.' So that House Bill 1717 said to, 'restore insofar as practical to appropriate beneficial use. I think that's too weak, whereas I think the House Bill 656 that would call you to restore it to at least the use it had prior to the mining may also be too tight the other way. I think the Senate Bill 55 approach is down the middle of the road which says that you do restore it to the 'same or substantially beneficial use,' is a proper way to go there." Therefore, the conclusion that we have drawn from the legislative history of the bill is that the extent of reclamation required by "substantially beneficial" may be something other than the use it was prior to

Several attempts have been made to account for the fact that grains in a fully recrystallized metal will coarsen on annealmg. Two fundamentally different hypotheses have been advanced, with several variations of each. One school considers that the cause of grain growth is the surface energy of the grain boundary. The theory of Jeffriesl that grain size and grain size contrast control growth is an example. The second school considers the primary cause to be a difference in the lattice energy on either side of the grain boundary. The more perfect grains are considered to grow at the expense of their less perfect neighbors, with a decrease in free energy, and a consequent increase in the stability of the system. Burgers2 presents the case for the strain or lattice imperfection theory of grain growth quite completely. The latter theory is attractive, since there is no doubt that differences in lattice energy or lattice perfection can cause grain boundary migration. A recrystallization nucleus grows for this reason as was beautifully demonstrated by van Arkel and Ploos van Amstel.³ Although it is generally stated that grain growth does not precede recrystallization, several workers4-5 have shown that small strains may induce a single crystal in an aggregate to grow, or at least may cause some grain boundary migration. The origin and nature of the imperfections that are considered to be responsible for normal grain growth have never been clearly described, but it is generally agreed that they are a consequence of the difficulty of atomic reorientation in the solid state, and that they do not seriously differ from the type of imperfection that can be introduced by mechanical deformation. An object of the present work was to determine whether the introduction of mechanical deformation would cause grain growth in a specimen which would not otherwise show it under the conditions used. It was also planned to determine the effect of such deformation on the rate of growth in a specimen which would show growth in the unstrained condition. Recently Maddigan and Blank6 have indicated that slightly strained specimens of alpha brass can undergo considerable growth prior to recrystallization if annealed at low temperatures. French7 has reported that at deformations less than 17 pet it is very difficult to detect the beginning of recrystallization in the same material. It was therefore planned to broaden this work to include a complete study of the microscopic behavior of alpha brass under condition~ of temperature, time, grain size and deformation such that recrystallization would not occur or would occur to only a Small extent. CORROSION of tanks, pipes and other equipment in the oil fields is becoming worse as the production of high- sulfur crudes in the Texas panhandle and west Texas areas increases. It has been estimated that .in certain fields of that State one tank out of every five has to be replaced every year because of the high sulfur content of the crude. One suggested method for combating tank corrosion is the use of .materials which have a high resistance to the corrosive action of hydrogen sulfide and high-sulfur crudes; aluminum is one of these materials. THIS report is the first of a series planned by The Mineral Inquiry, organized by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to make factual studies of the world's mineral resources in their political and international relations. The efforts of The Inquiry are directed toward filling certain notable gaps in available information, without duplication of many other investigations touching this field which" are being conducted by other organizations, public and private. Much of its work is indirect-suggesting topics for study by other individuals and organizations and aiding in their planning and correlation. The present report is designed to show the nationality of the commercial control of mineral resources, in addition to the geographic distribution of production by nation-in other words, the overlapping of political and commercial control. Detailed accuracy cannot be claimed for the figures presented. For some companies division of ownership by nationality has been very difficult to ascertain, as many companies are reluctant to dis-close the extent of their holdings in other corporations, and the impossi-bility of tracing all stock ownership is obvious. Also there are frequent changes in the distribution of stock control. The percentages given rep-resent only the participation that has been identified definitely, even though it is known in some cases with fair certainty that larger interests exist, as, for instance, American participation in foreign chromite companies. In bringing' together these figures we have had the cordial co-operation of the United States Bureau of Mines, the United States Geologi-cal Survey, the Mineral Division of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, the Brookings Institution, and of many specialists connected with the mineral industries covered. The report does not cover the entire list of minerals. Coal, although it is one of the most important minerals, was omitted because not more. than one or two per cent of the world's production comes from mines that are owned by companies foreign to the countries where the coal is produced. Others, such as gold, are omitted because sufficient data have not yet been accumulated. It is hoped that some of these may be covered in subsequent reports. It is not our purpose here to discuss the significance of the figures sub-mitted, but only to point out the general nature of the problems on which they have a bearing.

Meeting of Jan. 23, 1914.-The President reported the appointment of Arthur S. Dwight and E. Gybbon Spilsbury as tellers to canvass the votes for the Annual Election of Directors. The President reported the appointment of the Committee on Precious and Base Metals, reorganized in accordance with the list on page xlvi. . The Treasurer was authorized to invest the sum of approximately $1,000, accruing from the sale of Life Memberships during the past year, by the purchase of one gold bond of the Interborough Rapid Transit Co., due 1966, at 5 per cent. The By-Laws of the San Francisco Local Section were approved. The recommendation of the Lord Kelvin Memorial Fund Committee that the balance of the fund unexpended be applied to the establishment of a Kelvin Gold Medal was approved. Forty-two members who had paid up all arrears of clues were reinstated. The sum of $100 was appropriated to the Columbia Local Section. The price of each of the three Volumes of Transactions of the year 1913 was established as $5 in paper and $6 in half-morocco. Forty-three Members, One Associate and four Junior Members were elected to membership in their respective classes.

Stimulated emission from Nd+3 in yttrium uanadate fYVOJ is reported. Single crystals of YVO4:Nd, obtained from Linde Col-p., have improved substantially in the last several months. Pulsed thresholds of YVO, laser rods are now approximately 2 to 3 5, cowparable to tliose for YAG:Nd. Yttrium uanadate crystalli~es irz a space group similar to zircon. All rare-earth vanadates have this structure. Rare-earth ions sucll as Nd+3 which substitutes for Y+3, aye situated irz a strong tetragonal crystal field which lacks inversion symmetry. This condition increases the p'robability of the parity-forbidden f — f transitions. Yttrium anadate has strong absorption bands beyond -1000A. These are clue to Y-O, V-O charge transfer and molecular transitions. Under 2537 and 3660A irradiation pure YVO, fluroresces u bright yel-LOLO. YI'U4:E[t are brieJy described. THIS paper describes some of the optical and laser properties of Nd+3- and Eu+3-doped yttrium orthovana-date (YVO4). It reports laser action for the first time in this low-symmetry host. For some time we have pursued a research program concerning laser hosts' wherein the rare-earth (RE) ion is situated at a site of low crystal symmetry so as to increase the probability of radiative transitions. Single crystals of doped and undoped YV04 are grown from iridium crucibles in an oxyhydrogen gas-fired furnace by a modified Czochralski technique.' This material crystallizes in a D4li tetragonal space group of the zircon (ZrSiO,) type.3 All RE vanadates have the same structure and form solid solutions with YVO4. Therefore, it will be possible to investigate a variety of cross-pumped laser systems, as in the case of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG).4 At present, ~d'~-doped YAG is one of the most efficient solid-state lasers.5 Accordingly, most of the material to follow will compare the properties of YV04 to those of YAG. Fig. 1 shows the relative transmission of YAG and two types of YVO4. "Pure" YVO4 has a normal absorption edge and is colorless. A second type has a broad absorption peaking near 4200A and is yellow. Rubin and Van uitert6 suggest the yellow material is slightly reduced. Samples of each type are being investigated by electron spin resonance,7 but these studies are so far inconclusive. The pulsed laser threshold is much lower in the yellow material than in the colorless. Therefore, the absorption at 3500 to 5000.4 transfers energy to the Ndi3 ions. Photons of wave length between 2000 and 4500A cause undoped YVO4 to fluoresce at 4800, 5250, 5460, 5540, and 5750A. This emission, previously reported by Brixner and Abramsom,8 is partially quenched by EU'~ and completely quenched by Ndt3 at room temperature due to energy transfer from the lattice to the RE ions. At low temperatures, some lattice fluorescence is present. This implies that the energy-transfer process is in part phonon-assisted. Although the YVO, single crystals used in this work were prepared from Y2O3 containing less than 0.01 pct rare-earth impurities, there is aopossibility that emission lines between 4800 and 5750A are due to dysprosium, terbium, and so forth. However, these lines are not observed in other compounds, prepared from Y2O3, such as YP04, Y2MoO6, and so forth. Furthermore, extensive absorption measurements on our "pure" YV04 single crystals between 0.4 and 5.0 failed to reveal any characteristic rare-earth lines. Fig. 2 compares the absorption spectra of Ndt3-doped YAG and YVO4from 0.6 to 1.0 . The Ndt3 absorptions are labeled according to free ion, R-S coupling. These term designationsQ are appropriate for YAG:Nd. They appear to be inappropriate for YV04:Nd. In YVO, neodymium must substitute for yttrium. The yttrium site is situated In a strong tetragonal field, where point symmetry is (42m) or possibly lower.1° However, the reduced splitting of the Stark components of the YV0,:Nd spectrum implies that the NdT3 ion is in a cubic site. The only plausible explanation for this discrepancy is that the Ndt3 ion is in a low-symmetry site, lacking inversion symmetry, so that a substantial admixture of 4f and 5d wave functions occurs. In this case, R-S coupling is not valid and J is no longer a good quantum number." Consistent with this view, the 4~ metastable level of YV04:Nd has an oscillator strength larger and a

FATIGUE crack propagation in some aspects can be viewed as being a result of localized plastic deformation concentrated near the tip of the crack.' Deformation is influenced by microstructure which in turn can affect the fatigue crack growth significantly. To study the effect of localized microstructural changes on fatigue crack propagation, cantilever-type notched specimens were subjected to cyclic bending at constant load amplitude. The extent of fatigue crack propagation was obtained by measuring the length of the crack by periodic observation with a microscope on the polished side of the sample,2"4 and these data were used in preparing the curves in the figures which follow. Figs. 1 (solid lines) and 2 show experimental results obtained in austenitic type 302 stainless steel containing higher than standard carbon (0.24 pct C) and 310 stainless steel. Both steels were homogenized for 8 hr at 1120°C and then water-quenched in order to prevent the precipitation of carbides. Fig. 3 shows experimental results obtained on 9440 low alloy steel in the normalized condition and in the quenched and tempered (580°C) condition. Indications of microstructural influence can be seen in scattering of the experimental data. The degree of scattering depends on both the microstructure and the amount of cyclic stress applied to the sample. For microstructures which are more easily deformed plastically, e.g., normalized or annealed as compared with hardened and tempered structures, the scattering is greater. Similarly, higher stresses produce greater scattering in the results, regardless of whether the cause of the stress increase is due to initial loading conditions or the growth in crack length. Scattering is believed to be a result of partial redistribution in the stress field around the tip caused by plastic deformation. This opinion is borne out by much smaller scattering of experimental results in the austenitic 302 high-carbon (0.24 pct C) steel. In this steel, plastic deformation in the neighborhood of the crack causes partial mar-tensitic transformation of metastable austenite,5 which in turn restrains further plastic deformation. THAT a distressing explosion of some magnitude did not take place in the Berry No. 3 mine of the Ford Collieries Co. recently was solely because no source of ignition was present when the stage was set for such an occurrence. The mines of this company, which are in West Deer Township, Allegheny' County, Pa., have been operating in the double or thick Freeport seam since 1.909. During this entire period they have been classed as gaseous by the Pennsylvania Department of Mines, and some gas has been encountered from time to time almost entirely however in development work in the vicinity of clay veins or wants-and never to my knowledge on gobs or in rib work.

Moreover, it may be readily shown that a. striking relationship exists between the geological decomposition or geological carbonization processes and those artificially produced by heat. The possibility that formation of voids under creep-rupture conditions may take place by the condensation of vacancies has been investigated theoretically. It has been concluded that nucleation of voids under creep-rupture conditions by vacancy condensation is highly improbable. However, growth of pre-existant voids by vacancy condensation is probable. A number of predictions made in this theory have been verified by the data. It has been predicted and checked that the product of rupture life and steady-state creep rate for preannealed metals and single phase alloys is an approximately invariant quantity, independent of stress, temperature, and atomic number for a given type structure. The direction of the effect of cold work on this product has been predicted and found in agreement with experiment. A number of experiments to evaluate the vacancy condensation mechanism further are described. SEVERAL papers have appeared recently which speculate on the origin of voids formed at grain boundaries under stress.' ' The object of this paper is to examine quantitatively the proposition that the voids produced in a creep test are a result of vacancy condensation. A result of this paper is a theory of creep-rupture. Void Nucleation Application of standard nucleation theory" to the problem of void nucleation leads to the following conclusions: 1—Homogeneous nucleation of voids requires a supersaturation ratio (concentration of vacancies in supersaturated to that in saturated solution) of 400 for a reasonable surface energy of 1000 erg per cm-and 1.4 for the improbably low surface energy of 10 erg per cm. 2—Heterogeneous nucleation of voids at plane interfaces between two phases requires a supersaturation ratio of 2.5 for a typical contact angle of 145 3-—Void nucleation about a solid particle may be accomplished at a supersaturation ratio of 1.17 for a typical value of work of adhesion? of 60 erg per The work of adhesion is the surface work 10 replace two solid-vauor surfaces by a solid-solid interface. enr ' between an oxide and a metal in the presence of a surface active element such as sulphur. Estimates of the supersaturation ratio at which voids are produced in diffusion experiments yield a maximum of 1.01. Inasmuch as the foregoing mechanisms of void nucleation probably will not operate at this level—too low a surface energy is required—the investigatol. is led to the conclusion that voids must already exist. That is, nucleation of voids probably does not occur. Rather, existing submicroscopic voids grow out to visible size. Already existing voids might be produced during solidification or working. Supercritical sized parlicles which contain cracks may act as heterogeneous void nuclei. Gas pockets may act as void nuclei. Experiments are desired to determine the nature of the heterogeneous void nuclei which grow out to voids in both diffusion and creep experiments. Void Growth Void growth might occur in at least two possible ways, depending upon whether the already existing void nuclei are at grain boundaries or within the grains. In the case of a spherical void far from a crystal boundary, vacancies are generated during creep as a consequence of the migration of suitable dislocation jogs' and are also annihilated at sinks. Under these conditions, a steady-state concentration of vacancies is built up in the crystal, defined by the condition that for any differential volume the rate of generation of vacancies in that volume equals the rate of annihilation of those vacancies." This equality would lead to the development of a gradient of vacancy concentration radially outward from the void surface up to a radius where the vacancy lifetime becomes equal for all directions of vacancy migration. The distance over which this vacancy concentration gradient extends equals about 2vD,T* where D, is the vacancy diffusivity and T:' the vacancy lifetime in a crystal outside the gradient in a zone of constant vacancy concentration. The vacancies generated in the region over which the gradient exists will annihilate more often at the void than elsewhere. Approximately a little over one-half the vacancies generated in the gradient zone will annihilate at the void. The effecl of preferred orienlation on X-vay dzffvaction measurements of retained austenzte was investigated for four precipitation-hardening staznless steels in sheet form. A method is preserzted for estimating the ervor in measurement associated with a given samplirig direction. The method was used to select an "optimum" sampling direclion in order to minimize errors in measurement due to preferred orientation. hleasuremenls of retained austenite content employing lhe proposed sampling direction are conzpaved to measuretnents enzploying the more commonly used normal direclion for a series of sawzples. THE first application of X-ray diffraction to the measurement of retained austenite in steels is due to Sekito, 1 who employed a photographic technique in which the (111) reflection from a thin strip of gold affixed to a cylindrical sample was employed as a standard. Averbach 2 introduced the "direct comparison" method in which the ratios of observed to calculated random intensity are assumed proportional to the austenite and/or martensite contents. Averbach's work forms the basis of most subsequent X-ray diffraction methods for the determination of retained austenite. Subsequent improvements are due to: Averbach and Cohen,3 who employed a sodium chloride crystal to monochromate cobalt radiation; Averbach et a1.,4 who introduced a bent sodium chloride monochromator; Mager,' who used a bent quartz crystal to monochromate chromium radiation ; Littmam, who first used a geiger counter diffractometer for this purpose; Beu and Beu and Koistinen, 11,12 who studied effects of absorption factor, surface preparation, sample geometry, integrated intensity vs peak height, choice of radiation, monochromator, and filter. The possibility of errors in measured values due to orientation effects was noted by Miller,13 who suggested examination of a surface other than the plane of rolling. Lopata and Kula 14 have developed an experimental technique in which the preferred orientation is measured in each sample. They illustrated the method for a sample containing 42 pct retained austenite. Application of their technique to the 1 to 15 pct range typical for the precipitation-hardening stainless steels does not appear feasible. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The nominal compositions of the precipitation-hardening stainless steels investigated are listed in Table I. Ingots were solution-treated, hot-rolled to approximately 0.2 in., and reduced to 0.050 in. by a suc- cession of cold rolling and annealing operations. After this treatment the 17-4PH sample was in the marten-sitic condition, while the 17-7PH, PH 14-8Mo, and PH 15-7Mo samples were in the austenitic condition. Samples of 17-7PH and PH 15-7Mo steels in the mar-tensitic condition were obtained by heating to 1750'F for 10 min and holding at -100°F for 8 hr. A sample of PH 14-8Mo steel in the martensitic condition was obtained by heating to 1700°F for 1 hr and holding at -100°F for 8 hr, followed by aging at 950" for 1 hr. POLE FIGURE DETERMINATIONS Samples were thinned to 0.003 to 0.005 in. by etching in a solution containing 250 ml reagent-grade phosphoric acid (85 to 87 pct H3PO4), 250 ml technical-grade hydrogen peroxide (30 to 35 pct H 2 O 2), and 50 to 100 ml reagent-grade hydrochloric acid (37 to 38 pct HCl). The specimens were placed in an "integrating" sample holder which provided a 1-in. oscillation in the plane of the sample. The diffractometer was aligned to measure the intensity diffracted by planes of the particular {hkl} type being studied. The sample was Set for a given latitude angle, a, measured from the plane of the sheet, and diffracted intensity recorded as the longitude angle, 0, measured in the plane of the sheet from the rolling direction, was increased from 0 to 360 deg. After a 360-deg scan of B, a was incremented by 5 deg, and the process repeated. Random standards obtained by spraying suspensions of powdered iron (bcc structure) and nickel (fcc structure) in lacquer were used to correct observed intensities for absorption and geometrical effects. Zirconium-filtered molybdenum radiation was used to determine the transmission regions of the (111) (0to 45 deg), (200) (0 to 60 deg), and (220) (0 to 45 deg) austenite and (110) (0 to 45 deg), (200) (0 to 50 deg), and (211) (0 to 35 deg) martensite pole figures.
