The Cæur d'Alene silver-lead mining district of northern Idaho is probably best known to the general public as a seat of labor-troubles. So far as the writer is aware, little has been written and little is known about its geology and resources. People interested in lead-smelting are, of course, cognizant of the economic importance of the region, but they have not communicated much of their knowledge to the public. Exact figures as to the total output of the district are not obtainable, but the following estimates, covering the entire output of the 15 years during which the mines have been operated, are believed to be approximately correct: Group of Mines. Wardner Group, including the Bunker Hill and Sul livan, Empire State-Idaho, Last Chance, Sierra Nevada, bur d'Alene Development Co... . $17,500,000 Cafion Creek Group, including the Gem, Frisco Con solidated, Granite, Standard, Mammoth, Hecla, Tiger-Poorman, Custer and Bell,.... 35,000,000 Mullan Group, including the Morning, You Like and Gold Hunter,........7,500,000 $60,000,000 This output covers the period of discovery and early struggles, and several periods of stagnation caused by strikes and other serious labor-troubles. In 1900 the output of the district was fully $10,000,000, and this figure would have been considerably increased in 1901 had not a curtailment of production been forced by the condition of the lead-market. In 1901 the product was about 150,000 tons of concentrates, with a gross. value of $8,250,000.

IT is a privilege and a pleasure to deliver this, the Twenty-sixth Annual Institute of Metals Division Lecture. Eleven years ago C. A. Edwards addressed this audience on the subject "Gases in Metals." In spite of this relatively recent presentation, I propose to, present to you some quantitative considerations of industrial significance on the separation of gases from molten metals because recent observations and measurements, presented in the literature, have made it possible to evaluate mathematically the gases or gas-forming elements and to develop an understanding of the mechanism of gas separation that should permit, in many cases, the control of this baffling phenomenon. DEFINITIONS Before becoming involved in the subject it seems desirable, for the sake of clarity, to state certain definitions and axioms: I. We are dealing only with gases that separate from the molten metal either during cooling or in the transition from liquid to solid. Gases injected by the liquid stream and trapped in the solidified metal, or those forced into the solidifying metal from the mold due to either thermal or cher4ical effects are not considered. Neither are we concerned with the separation of gases within the metal after solidification is complete for the data on this subject are at least complete enough to permit the practicing metallurgist to satisfactorily control the phenomenon. 2. Only where there is a decrease in solubility or a change in equilibrium of either a gaseous element or an element that reacts to form a gaseous compound, can there be a separation of a gaseous phase from the liquid or solidifying metal. 3. The amount of gas separating from the liquid during solidification can be computed directly from the amount of the element contained in the liquid when freezing commences less the amount of the element found in the solid either as a separate solid phase or in solid solution. 4. There can be no separation of gas bubbles unless the told pressure of the gases in the liquid meld exceeds atmospheric pressure plus the hydrostatic pressure of ' the liquid metal head. (In addition, pres- sure resulting from surface tension in- creases the total pressure requirement for initial gas separation. Probably the remarkable differences in appearance caused by different gases in the same host metal are influenced greatly by the rate of diffusion of the gas in the liquid metal balancing the decrease in pressure as the gas bubble size increases and the surface tension effect decreases. Thus hydrogen with its high diffusion rate in liquid copper separates in the form of relatively coarse cavities for a given rate of heat extraction.) 5. Gas separation can take place at less than atmospheric pressure in the voids created by the shrinkage from liquid to solid, but since the voids are not caused by the gas the presence of gas in the voids is of importance only where it

For several years an investigation has been in progress in the research laboratory of The American Brass Co. to determine the thermal and electrical conductivities of most copper alloys of commercial importance and several of scientific interest. This paper contains such data on the binary alloys of copper with silicon, aluminum, manganese and nickel, and on a large number of ternary or more complex alloys. Some interesting general relationships between the thermal and electrical conductivities for all copper alloys at all temperatures are pointed out. The data for the copper-zinc, copper-phosphorus and copper-tin binary systems have already been published1,2 † except for the electrical conductivity at 200" C., which is given in the appendix of this paper. Literature on Thermal Conductivity of Copper Alloys The papers referred to above contained a summary of the figures available in 1929 for the thermal conductivity of copper alloys. There is given in Table 1 herewith a selection of the data that have appeared since that time. The measurements of Hanson and Rogers3 are particularly interesting since they cover a series of alloys in the alpha solid solution range and show the effect of heat-treatment. Their alloys were tested as annealed castings, and are not therefore directly comparable to the worked alloys measured in the present investigation, although the difference is small. Bailey's determinations4 were carried out on the alloys used by Lees6 in 1906, and extend his results to higher temperatures. It is most unfortunate that the alloys were not analyzed, for the approximate compositions given are hardly sufficient identification of the material. It is equally to be regretted that neither Hanson and Rogers nor Bailey give data for the electrical conductivities of their samples. Sager6, using the heat-wave method of King, determined the thermal conductivity of copper, nickel and four alloys of the two metals. His results are included in Table 1.

Using published surface-diffusion (D,) data and published sintering equations, it is shouln that surface difusion should dominate the neck-growth stage of intering for all materials in which D, has been measured (six metals and A1as). Also, grain boundary diffusion can be expected to contribute appreciably to shrinkage and possibly to neck growth below some critical temperature of the order of 70 pct 01- the absolute melting temperatuve. In view of the widespread conclusion in previous sintering work that volume diffusion dowzinates neck gvowth, experiments were conducted using spherical copper powders to test this conclusion. Scaling studies on neck growth at 950°and 1020°C clearly demonstrated that suyface diffusion dorninates. Kinetic studies on shrinkage gave more equivocal results that indicated an increasing role of' grain boundary transport at lower temperatures. Five diarszeters from 100 to 300 u were used in the scaling sludy and a temperature range of -650' 10 950 C was covered in the shrinkage studies. All experiments were conducted in dvy hydrogen. In 1949, Kuczynski published his now classic paper on the determination of the transport mechanism in sintering from the time laws of neck growth. In the interim, these laws have been applied to many systems and slightly modified by several authors. Essentially all these authors concluded that, for crystal- line materials, the dominant transport mechanism in neck growth is volume diffusion. This stems from the observation that the neck radius increases about as t"5 and that the activation energy approximates that for lattice diffusion. A related but independent series of studies stems from Mullins' rigorous analysis of the growth of the groove formed where a grain boundary meets a free surface." xperimental work stemming from this analysis has shown that for each crystalline material studied (Au, Ag, Cu, Ni, Fe, Pt, Al2O3) surface diffusion was clearly the dominant transport mechanism for groove widths up to the order 10 to 20 p. The ratio of the quantity of material being carried by lattice diffusion to that carried by surface diffusion increases linearly with the groove width, so surface diffusion is dominant for all widths under 10 to 20 u. The analysis of the relative contributions of surface and volume diffusion to grain boundary grooving, and to neck growth in sintering, shows that they are quite similar. Thus, using the available surface-diffusion data and the approximate equations of Kuczynski, or the more rigorous recent equations of Nichols and Mullins, 3 it can be shown that the small necks between particles must grow almost entirely by surface diffusion. The purpose of this study was to re-examine the basis for the conclusion that the neck-growth stage of sintering proceeds by volume diffusion. Using spherical copper powders, of several different diameters, precise experimental measurements were made of both neck growth and shrinkage. Application of Herring's scaling laws to the neck-growth data clearly indicated that neck growth occurred by surface transport, even though the neck radius increased as or Using the recent analysis of Mullins and Nichols as well as published data on surface diffusion, it is shown that the observed time law, as well as actual rate of neck growth, can be satisfactorily explained by a surface-diffusion mechanism.

c axis compression behavior of beryllium single crystals at three purity levels under hydrostatic pressures up to 27 kbars was determined. Extensive non-basal slip, observed by two-surface trace analysis and transmission electron microscopy, occurred under a hydrostatic pressure of about 12 kbars (175 ksi) for the high-purity (twelve-zone pass) material and at about 19 kbar (275 ksi) for the lower-purity (zone-leveled) material. Prismatic loops with a (c + a) Burgers vector were observed in association with second-phase parti- A principal factor limiting the use of beryllium is its brittle behavior when tested at the usual strain rates (E = 10-4 sec- 1) at temperatures below about 200°C and under impact conditions at temperatures in excess of 200°C. It has been proposed' that the brittle-ness of beryllium is associated with the lack of a sufficient number of independent slip modes and the absence of a slip mode with a Burgers vector out of the basal plane [presumably (c + a) pyramidal slip mode] and to the ease with which beryllium cleaves on the basal and second-order prism planes. The absence of pyramidal slip has been attributed to a high Peierls-Nabarro stress associated with the motion of dislocations with a (c + a) vector and the ease with which cleavage occurs on the basal and second-order prism planes. The experimental evidence in support of the proposed explanation for the brittleness of beryllium is far from complete; for example, that the ductile-to-brittle transition in polycrystalline beryllium is associated with the operation of profuse (C + a) slip has not been unequivocally established. The occurrence of (c + a) slip ({1122}(1123)) has been experimentally established2-5 under conditions where basal and prism cleavage are restricted in a c axis compression test. In these investigations (C +a) slip was found in high-purity beryllium single crystals tested in c axis compression* at 200°C and in Be-4.4 pct Cu and Be-5.2 pct cles in the lower-purity materials tested. The loops were related to surface "extrusions" observed on many of these same specimens. Nonbasal dislocations operating on (1122) planes with a (c + a) Burgers vector were observed. The presence of c and a dislocations together with (c + a) dislocations suggests that the (c + a) dislocations dissociate presumably on unloading or after failure of the test crystals to c and a dislocations. terial, (c + a) slip has only been observed near the the fracture4 surface in room-temperature c axis compression tests. Fracture in these tests occurs without measurable plastic flow, as determined with a strain sensitivity of 10"6. Since it has been shown for many metals that the application of hydrostatic pressure suppresses fracture,?-' it was felt that studying the behavior of unalloyed beryllium single crystals stressed in c axis compression under a hydrostatic pressure would reveal whether (c + a) can occur if fracture was prevented, and that it might elucidate the role of (c + a) slip in the ductile to brittle transition. Evidence that (C + a) slip is associated with increased ductility in a high-pressure environment has been found in stress-strain tests on poly crystalline beryllium.10 The present paper describes a study on the influence of a hydrostatic pressure environment on the occurrence of (c + a) slip in beryllium single crystals. Material of two purity levels was tested in c axis compression over the pressure range ambient to about 27.5 kbars.* 1) MATERIAL PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION Two lots of low-purity single-crystal beryllium were used. The first lot was "ingot secondary refined grade" and designated lot A. The second lot (lot B) was produced by a two floating zone pass zone-leveling operation in an argon-filled sealed quartz apparatus on a 1-in.-diam by 12-in.-long bar of Pechiney secondary refined-grade vacuum-cast and hot-extruded material. The high-purity material (lot C) was made by traversing twelve floating zone passes through a similar bar of Pechiney secondary refined-grade vacuum-cast and hot-extruded material. In a series of spark cutting and lapping procedures,11 single-. crystal specimens some 0.12 in. sq by 0.30 in. high were made with the sides Parallel to the first- and second-order prism planes and the basal plane within 3' of arc of the top and bottom surfaces of the specimen. TRINIDAD, British West Indies, is an island near the north coast of South America, situated between latitudes 10° and 11° N:, and. opposite the numerous outlets of the Orinoco River Delta. It is separated from Venezuela by the Gulf of Paria (salt, water) and straits over 5 mi. (8 km.) wide. The area of the island is approximately 1750 sq. mi. (453,- . 250 hectares) and the population is approximately 400,000. The climate is tropical with an annual rainfall of from 45 to 60 in. (114 to 152 cm.). The oil fields consist of several units, or fields, located in the southern half of the island. Approximately 90 per cent. of the total production has been yielded by fields situated within 7 mi: (11.3 km.) of the famous asphalt lake and on the southwest peninsula. The most important producing fields, or units, are the following, which are shown on the accompanying map: Brighton, or Pitch Lake Field, operated by the Trinidad Lake Petroleum Co., Ltd., is situated beside the famous Pitch Lake; it, even encroaches on the lake. This paper is the third of a series treating of the relations of ores of the metals to igneous rocks. The first' outlined the general problem; the second2 proposed a classification of lode ores, and showed how the distribution of the deposits is in a certain measure controlled by the contour of the roof of the parent batholith. A number of mining districts were discussed, the examples being selected chiefly from group 2 of the classification. The proposed classification of lode deposits, briefly stated, is as follows: 1. Cryptobatholithic: near hidden batholiths which have not yet been exhumed by erosion. 2. Acrobatholithic: in and near cupolas or domes of batholiths—the high points of larger underlying masses. 3. Epibatholithic: on batholiths, near their rims, but below eroded cupolas, or below the highest points of the roofs. 4. Embatholithic: among closely-spaced outcrops which probably are parts of a single bathohth. The outcrops of invaded rocks predominate. 5. Endobatholithic. in and near roof pendants of large batholiths. The invading rocks predominate. 6. Hypobatholithic: in deeply-eroded batholiths, where even roof pendants have been eroded. Deposits of certain metals on the roofs of the batholiths are much more numerous in some positions than deposits of other metals, and the horizontal zonal arrangements of lodes of different metals are shown characteristically only in certain groups. In a large measure, also, the character of the fracturing and metallization is determined by the position on the roof of the batholith. The disseminated copper ores in porphyry constitute a clearly-defined type. All the deposits of these ores, as far as known, are in group 2. They appear to have been formed only in and around small upward projections of the parent granitic masses, and not low on the walls of the

INTRODUCTION NOBODY will dispute the fact that the conservation in every legitimate manner of our valuable high-grade phosphate-rock deposits is a present-day problem of importance. The table and curve, given herewith, show. that during the past 10 years the exportation of high-grade rock has averaged very close to half the total output of the entire country. The bulk of this exportation is from Florida, for obvious reasons. It is plain that the deposits in this State, more particularly, are being wastefully depleted under a system of selecting the cream of the product for exportation to Europe, leaving the comparatively low-grade rock, running from 65 to 70 per cent., and under, in bone phosphate of lime, for our own n fertilizer manufacturers to work up when all the best rock is gone. In this paper the writer has endeavored to make a point of describing in some detail the important methods of production and conservation in Tennessee. These ought to prove of educational value to our American agriculturists and fertilizer manufacturers, and should result in a demand for the highest-grade rock, both for direct application to the soil and for use in making acid phosphate. FOR a great part of the progress of the world we are indebted to the works of engineers. It is to them that we owe our means of rapid transportation, our canals, our railroads, our bridges, many of our automatic machines, and most of those appliances which, by facili tating or decreasing the amount of human labor to be expended and by utilizing the great forces of nature, have made the present progress of the world possible. Their education is a matter of momentous interest to the whole civilized world. I have, therefore, thought that some discussion of the theory upon which their education should be based would be of interest to this body, and have ventured a few reflections and suggestions upon the subject. The word education, in its original signification, meant the draw ing out of a man what there was in him. In our common schools the practical work of education consists in putting into the brain a larger number of facts than can be retained, which are consequently more or less understood and digested. It ordinarily consists simply of teaching a round of abstractions or facts which when not assim ilated are not only useless to the individual, but generate careless habits of thought and make more or less untruthful, unfaithful or unsuccessful men. In most of our schools a procrustean system is adopted; all are made to advance upon one general plan, the quick being kept back and the slow dragged on at a rate too great for their power of comprehension. Until within a very few years it has been a theory in common school education that the brain alone should be developed, and that little or no attention need be paid to the train-

How do you make a mine out of 500 000 kg (1.1 million lb) of uranium oxide contained in a low-grade deposit with high clay content? Confronted with these limited reserves and mineralogical problems at France's St. Pierre du Cantal uranium deposit, engineers adopted a rather unusual mill process to keep capital costs to a minimum. Crushing and grinding were eliminated by using a high pressure monitor to slurry ore directly from stockpiles. After mechanical separation of the high-grade fines from low-grade sand, the sand fraction is washed of clay to increase permeability and then it is heap leached. Fines are sent to agitated vessels for acid leaching, and the pulp from this operation is diluted by pregnant solution from the heap leaching.

The Plasticity transition in magnesium was studied by plane-strain compression of single crystals and polycrystalline material at temperatures from about 20" to 307°C. Reduction of single crystals along the c axis was accommodated by twinning on {1011) and retwinning on (10 12}, followed by basal shear in the doubly twinned volume. Deformation in that mode can result in sufficient independent shears for arbitrary shape change. Fracture in c axis compression, below about 100°C, has been related to excessive shear caused by unloading from the stress for {1011} twinning (-50 ksi at 20°C) to that for slip within the twin (-3 ksi); ductility follows from heating because the stress difference is lowered and the twin volume, in which elastic strain energy is dissipated on unloading, is increased. The stress for (1011) twinning is strongly temperature-dependent but not given by a critical resolved shear stress law. The latter is attributed to the influence of stress concentration from prior intersecting shear on nonbasal planes, the former to the temperature dependence of the preliminary slip. THE basic symmetry of hcp crystals has the effect of limiting the number of independent slip systems and making twinning an important deformation mechanism. The general result in wrought polycrystalline aggregates is a more or less sharply developed texture (or preferred orientation) which underlies a strong anisotropy in mechanical behavior. Knowing how the one influences the other is essential background for the use of such materials. Magnesium was of interest in this work because of the unexplained plasticity transition that it undergoes somewhere in the neighborhood of 200°c.''~ At lower temperatures plastic deformation before fracture in polycrystalline material is limited, while at higher temperatures extensive deformation is possible. The transition temperature commonly determines the lower limit of the range in which magnesium is worked. The limited ductility can be traced to a lack of independent crystallographic shears. A minimum of five are required for arbitrary shape change.' Around room temperature, however, slip on all known systems provides only four.' In each case, the slip direction is in the (0001) basal plane so that slip does not allow strain along the c axis. With increasing temperature, more slip occurs on the ( 1011) pyramidal plane and the ( 1010) prism plane but without change in direction.'?' Thus, that development alone cannot explain the transition temperature.

Abstract-Although the ore microscopist routinely examines polished sections to determine the mineralogy and texture of ores, his importance to the solution of problems peripheral to geology is not always fully realized. The techniques which he uses can be applied with little modification to the solution of a wide variety of beneficiation problem. By extending his studies beyond those normally considered to be of interest to the geologist, he can include examinations of polished sections of selected mill products. This is a logical extension, because the minerals and textures in the polished sections of ores are the same as those in mill Products. The mill dressing engineer should be more aware of the types of beneficiation problems that can be solved by the ore microscopist and what the ore microscopist can do for him. A greater degree of cooperation between the ore microscopist and the mill dressing engineer can be of significant mutual benefit. Ore microscopy holds an advantage over chemical analysis, because the interrelations and combinations of the mineral constituents of an ore or mil1 product can be visually determined. This advantage provides solutions to many beneficiation problems. Locking is a type of beneficiation problem that is particularly amenable to ore microscopy. The percentage, type, and distribution of locked particles can be readily determined with the aid of an ore microscope and an estimate made of the extent of additional grinding required for liberation. The extent of intimately locked types, which no reasonable amount of grinding will liberate, can also be evaluated. Mineral coating conditions, free particles of a deleterious mineral, and free particles of a valuable mineral held in floculated clusters of gangue are other features that can readily be observed. In some instances, visual examination may show that the problem is not one of locking. Photomicrographs illustrate the variety of beneficiation problems for which the ore microscope is applicable. These problems and their resolution demonstrate the importance of the instrument and show the value of close coordination between the mill dressing engineer and the ore microscopist.

The SO-called gas-tube method as developed by Hare, Peterson and Soler for determining the type and content of gases in molten steel is particularly adapted for determining the hydrogen content in molten steel. The development of this method has been quite completely discussed in a paper published by these co-workers in 1937.' The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to familiarize with this method those who arc not well acquainted with it. The principle of the gas-tube method is as fol1ows: One end of an evacuated gas tube is sealed with a very thin copper disk. when this end of the tube is immersed in a test spoonful of molten steel, the copper disk melts almost immediately, allowing a portion of the steel to be drawn up into the evacuated space. Any dissolved gases, and those produced by reactions between the components of the steel during freezing, are liberated into the unfilled portion of the sampling tube. A blob of steel that forms on the immersed end of the tube after the sample is drawn up seals up the end, making it airtight again. The evolved gases are subsequently drawn out of the gas tube through a suitable valve and analyzed by means of an Orsat apparatus. The volume of the sampling tube is sufficiently large so that a pressure considerably below atmospheric is produced after the gas evolution. The low pressure is necessary to effect a nearly complete removal of gases from the steel. Construction oF Sampling Tube The sampling gas-tube apparatus is illustrated in Fig. I. Seamless S.A.E. tubing used for section A is first cut into 7-ft. lengths. Through cxperiencc it was found necessary to use two sizes of tubing for this part, "is-in. and 3/4-in., respectively. The smaller tubing is generally used on the hotter or lower carbon steels. If the inside wall of the tube A is coated with grease or oil, it should be burned out before being machined as follows: One end is machined on the inside diameter to a depth of 34 in., so as to form a seat for a 7/8-in copper disk, which is stamped out from 0.005 to 0.007-in. thick copper sheet. The other end is machined on the outside diameter to a diameter of 1 5/16 in., to take a small reservoir or trap member I?. About 4 in. below the same end, a 1/2-in. hole is drilled to receive the 1/2-in. copper tubing leading to the large reservoir C. The inside of tube A is then thoroughly cleaned with a round wire brush, such as is generally used to clean out shotgun barrels. It is very important that the surface be absolutely free of rust or any nonmetallic coating. Next, the thin copper disk is soldered in place with low-melting silver solder.

(communication to the Secretary ?).-Dr. Pogue's presentation of the facts concerning the emerald deposits is very clear and convincing, and the only addition that I can suggest is a summary of previous theories of origin. He makes it evident that the pegmatite theory is the only one capable of explaining the existing relations, but upon certain details there may be some difference of opinion. If I understand the term pneumatolytic, it does not imply that all the elements concerned in a given deposit were transported as gases, but rather that the crystallization of these elements into the various minerals was favored by the presence of certain gaseous substances, notably H20, C02 and HF. It is highly improbable that the oxides of glucinum, aluminum, chromium, and silicon, which enter into the composition of the mineral emerald could have been transported in the gaseous form. The same is true of the metallic constituents of the parisite and other associated minerals. The explanation suggested, that solutions separated into liquid and gaseous portions, the latter ascending and forming the emerald in the upper portions of the rock only, therefore, seems to me untenable. When two formations exist side by side and one, A, is mineralized while the other, B, is barren, the possible explanations may he classed as (1) chemical, and (2) physical. 1. Some chemical feature of A not found in B might have caused crystallization of certain minerals in the former, which did not appear in the latter. In the present instance both rocks appear to be so similar chemically that no such effect can be looked for. Pogue mentions carbon as a possible precipitating agent, but describes both formations as carbonaceous, so that the difference in the minerals of the two can not be thus explained.

THE chemistry of clays and shales has been assuming increasing importance in the petroleum industry, and two factors have greatly influenced this trend. The first has been the growing evidence that the marine shales are source beds, and that the petroleum compounds have migrated to the sand reservoirs overlying or underlying these shales: the second has been the demand for drilling fluids better adapted to penetrate these marine shales without difficulty and expense. ORIGIN AND GENERAL COMPOSITON OF CLAYS AND SHALES Clays, shales and surface soils are all closely related materials. They are mixtures of finely divided compounds formed during the weathering of the solid crust of the earth. Their nature is essentially colloidal; that is, their behavior is determined by the state of division of the materials and the surface reactions of the smallest grains. Many of their chemical changes affect only the exposed areas and do not involve the interior of the grains of matter. The extent of these reactions is more nearly proportional to the area of the substances than to their mass, therefore it is possible for a small amount of a material in an extremely fine state of division to completely dominate the character of the mixture. More than 83 per cent of the crust of the earth is composed of three elements-oxygen, silicon and aluminum. Consequently, the corrosion products of the crust are predominantly aluminosilicates, or compounds of aluminum, silicon and oxygen. If we add the compounds of six elements-iron, calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium and hydrogen-more than 98 per cent of the crust has been accounted for. These six elements, together with the first three, also appear in soils, clays and shales. But direct chemical analysis is of little value in describing the nature of such materials. Many chemical individuals may be present in variable amounts, and the extreme subdivision of any one of the individuals may contribute qualities that dominate the mixture.

Apart from a usable product and good mining conditions, the greatest asset for a profitable coal mining organization is an effective mine maintenance program. The first step in achieving this is to have good mechanics-or men who want to be mechanics and are interested in knowing, more about the design and control of the machines in their charge. A good mechanic's knowledge and ability result from ambition, curiosity, and determination. Starting with these qualities, the aspiring mechanic can launch his career by learning all he can about mechanics, electricity, and hydraulics. Though the path is rough, the end result is rewarding. Mining machinery probably receives as much, if not more, abuse as any other heavy equipment in use today. Considering the conditions under which much of the repair work must be done, it is essential that the mine operator has the best men and tools to perform the work. Mining machines, from their inception, have utilized the electric motor; and down through the years of mechanization, this power source has undergone many changes to better adapt it to the job. The first motors used were direct-current (d-c) motors since d-c power was the most economical power source for mining at the time of early mechanization. These motors were large open-type machines which are seldom used in modern mining. Because of the mine environment, the d-c motor has been reduced in size to better suit the application in mining machines and is now manufactured with dust-tight or explosion-proof enclosures. The d-c motor is constructed with either (or both) series and shunt fields located on the stationary part of the motor (stator) and an armature coil wound on the rotating part of the motor (rotor). Power is supplied to the armature by brushes which are held stationary and make sliding contact with the armature. The brushes requires regular and careful maintenance because worn or defective brushes will cause heat or arcing which can destroy the motor. D-c motors can be used as d-c generators when mechanical power is supplied to them by the rotating

AN improved method of measuring the surface area of a comminution product down to any desired particle size has been developed. The method is largely graphical, and requires relatively little calculation. It can be used with materials containing large amounts of clay, or excess fines of any kind. The surface area S is expressed in terms of square meters per100 c.c. of solids. This expression is based upon volume rather than weight, and is considered to be more suitable for crushing and grinding problems, where the machines ordinarily are operated under constant volume conditions. It has the advantage that surface areas of different materials can be compared directly, even though their specific gravities may be unknown. The "specific surface" of a material, or the number of square centimeters of surface area per gram, is equal to 100S divided by the specific gravity. Particle diameters are expressed in microns, K being the diameter of the largest particle present and L the grind limit, or lower size limit of the particles formed directly by grinding. The value of K does not always coincide exactly with the diameters of the largest particles retained on the coarsest testing sieve, since the largest particles formed in crushing and grinding are often slabby, or have other irregular shapes. L has been chosen as 0.700 microns, or number 27.5 in the size number series,1 for reasons to be explained later. S is the total surface area of all particles larger than L microns in diameter. When a homogeneous comminution product is separated into fractions whose diameters bear a constant geometrical relationship [p] to each other, and the log per cent weight retained upon each size and passing the next larger size is plotted against the log diameter, a straight line results, which is called the distribution line, and which has a slope in called the distribution modulus. The distribution line can be extended to any desired limiting size, and the total surface area of all particles larger than that size can be calculated. The equation of the distribution line is w = Cxm [I] where w is the per cent weight retained on each successive sieve; x is the particle diameter; and C is the per cent weight retained on an opening of unit diameter.2 Theoretically, the distribution line can be extended to include infinitely small particles. When it is so extended, and the assumption is made that no fine particles are present other than those accounted for by the equation; the log per cent cumulative weight passing any series of sizes, plotted against the log diameter passed, will result in a straight line lying parallel to and above the plotted distribution line.
