The "Industrial Minerals" sector of the Australian minerals industry over the past decade or so can be seen to be moving away from a somewhat ad hoc grouping of producers to a more highly integrated and sophisticated industry in which products are being more stringently specified and greater amounts of capital are being spent.

Electrochemical polarisation techniques can be successively applied to maintain clean surfaces in process environments. The applications are the result of extensive knowledge of the electrochemical nature of process environments, an innovative approach to problem solving and shared æcan doÆ attitudes between the supplier and process owner. Initial identification of suitable applications is based on over 20 years of process and electrochemical experience. The technologies discussed in this paper include Electrochemical Anti-Scaling [EAS], Electrochemical Protection Systems with both anodic [EPSA] and cathodic [EPSC] protection and Electrochemical Flocculation [EF]. Examples of industrial applications are reviewed. Good examples of metallurgical processes which can benefit greatly from an advanced electrochemical treatment are the wet processes involving precipitation, crystallisation and evaporation. Eliminating corrosion and scaling which would otherwise cause process disruptions and quality problems can make a big difference in process profitability. Clear advantages in both cost efficiency and environment friendliness are easily demonstrated. Continuous processing with minimum downtime is one clear advantage. In comparison to the use of corrosion inhibitors, anti-scaling agents and flocculants, the electrochemical polarisation does not increase the environmental load from the process as no additives of any kind are used. In most cases the cost benefits from pro-actively keeping surfaces clean with the help of advanced electrochemistry are substantial when compared to traditional re-active methods and other active treatments.

The firing of mass blasts at Isa Mine is a normal operating practice. Both electric and non-electric initiating systems are being used for this purpose. The advantages gained by large firings relate to the Planning, Scheduling, Services and Production functions of Isa Mine. More efficient us"e is made of manpower due to the concentrated charging effort and con- tinuity of the charging operation. In addition, the requirement for ring firing personnel to work at the edge of large stope voids is reduced. Better fragmentation results from the interaction of adjacent detonating rings of blastholes and in flight collisions. With mass blasts there is also less chance of large blocks of ore, created by faults or joints, falling into the stope and creating problems at the drawpoints. The formation of a large tonnage of broken ore facilitates production at scheduled rates from that stope source. The weight of explosive detonating during a mass blast can be considerable. Isa Mine has achieved satisfactory blasting results without excessive ground vibration levels and present knowledge indicates that pillar ground stab- ility has been maintained.

The effect of delay time on fragmentation has been discussed for a long period but rarely in a satisfactory and unbiased way. Despite the efforts of many researchers, delay selection for fragmentation improvement or optimisation remains a controversial issue. Large-scale tests have been plagued with scarcity and scatter of observations, while small-scale tests have been associated with boundary effects and energy losses. Theoretical work is often used to produce explanations for available measurements or tries to simplify wave propagation and wave interaction to guide observation and practical work. The present work analyses results obtained from a relatively large number of small-scale experiments in blocks made of grout, and re-analyses results of previous experiments, to conclude on the effect of delay on fragmentation. It is shown that the main contribution of the delay is found in the fragmentation of the larger fragments of the blast, while the small fractions show almost no effect. Samples, where copper liners were used to inhibit penetration of detonation products in the rock mass, showed effect of delay only when short times were used and steady but poor fragmentation when long delays were used. Based on small-scale experiments, it appears that the fragmentation is optimised when a hole fires prior to the radial cracks, produced by the previous hole, reach the free face of the blast. Gas penetration may result in the development of few more fractures that affect the fragmentation of the largest particles of the blast.CITATION:Katsabanis, P D and Omidi, O, 2015. Shortly after the outbreak of war in September, 1939, it became apparent that considerable quantities of certain metals and alloys which at that time were not being produced in Australia would be required in increasing amounts for the prosecution of the war effort.Australian industry had relied on overseas sources of supply for the relatively small quantities of many special metals which were needed under peacetime conditions. As the war progressed so great became the demand for mooy of these alloys in Great Britain and other allied countries that it was necessary for them to place an embargo on the export of these materials, and thus it soon became evident that if Australia's production of munitions was to expand and develop it would be necessary for her to become independent of overseas sources for many of these essential 'items. The shipping position also became very acute, and this, accentuated the difficulties of obtaining these alloys. Because of the conditions outlined aqove, the manufacture of over thirty different metals and alloys .was undertaken at Newcastle during the past decade. It is with two of these that this paper proposes to deal. They are tungsten powder and ferro-silicon.TUNGSTEN POWDERTungsten is a rare and comparatively new metal. It is used extensively in the production of high speed tool steel, some grades of which contain up to 22% tungsten. Such articles as twist drills, reamers, milling cutters, and lathe tools are made from tool steel, and the demand for these during the war years was greater than ever before. The use of tungsten in the manufacture of high speed steel was first developed in 1914 by the Germans, and when it was discovered that they were using tungsten bearing steel for the production of munitions there began a world-wide search for ores of this rare metal.

The Callie Underground Gold Mine (Callie) is owned by Newmont Asia Pacific and located 531 km north-west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Historically, stopes have been mined utilising a primary and secondary stoping sequence with cemented aggregate fill and rock fill respectively. Current and near-future mining will employ long hole open stoping with rib pillars and rock fill with a paste fill system approved to allow a higher extraction ratio from mid-2011. The Callie rock mass is of good quality with little or no mining difficulties during development and stoping to a depth of 1140 m below surface. Development is currently occurring at depth of 1360 m below surface. Stress damage previously observed only in secondary stope accesses is now observed in development unaffected by stoping stresses. A change in rock mass properties is being experienced with depth, with more pronounced and frequent joint planes. Also, other structures are intersected more commonly, such as lithological boundaries and fault zones. The 'Callie rock factory' mentality that has persisted for years is challenged. This paper covers an appraisal of the stress and ground condition changes at Callie. The appraisal outlines the mine design criterion that was developed and examines the transition from a low stress environment to one where stress damage is observed. Discussion includes a judgement on the rock mass damage observed in development, the dominant geotechnical factors influencing the change in ground conditions, and if a correlation can be made between the observed rock mass damage with stress through the use of numerical modelling.

Australia is a leading producer of mineral sands and according to U.S. Bureau of Mines, produced 24, 53 and 64% of world's production of ilmenite, rutile and zircon respectively in 1983. The industry which is mainly export oriented earned in export income about $210 million in 1985. The dominant position which Australia occupies in world produc- tion of mineral sands is also maintained in many areas of research and development work on the processing and application of these minerals. Some of this research which is leading the world has been responsible for setting up industries to produce value-added and high-tech products such as synthetic rutile and partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ). The production of high purity zirconia is due to commence shortly while research in rare earths offers an exciting prospect for future Developments.

A study was conducted to examine how pretreatment of carbon-bearing gold ores with chlorine enhances gold recovery by cyanidation. It is hypothesized that metal species (including iron and copper) dissolved during chlorination adsorb on the carbon surface hindering the adsorption of dissolved gold. To test the hypothesis, samples of several sulfide minerals were subjected to reaction with sparged chlorine gas to determine which, if any, dissolve faster than gold under these conditions. Then, a synthetic carbonaceous refractory gold ore containing pyrite, chalcocite, activated carbon, and gold was subjected to gas sparging. The results of these experiments showed that chalcocite and arsenopyrite dissolve so that metal (copper and iron) is put into solution slightly faster than gold under the same chlorination conditions. Also, it was observed from the experiments that gold adsorbs on activated carbon during chlorination, but is replaced by copper and iron as the chlorination process dissolves more of the chalcocite and pyrite. The study concluded by investigating ferric chloride addition prior to chlorination to hinder gold adsorption on activated carbon.

Fletcher Challenge Limited through its subsidiary Grampian Mining Co Ltd has carried out an ore evaluation of one of New Zealand's largest known deposits of ilmenite located at Barrytown on the west coast of the -South Island, New Zealand.The ilmenite is located in a beach sand environment which has previously been mined for gold. Two analytical techniques were developed to quantify the resource. Considerable difficulty was experienced in this phase of the evaluation due to the presence of major inclusions within the ilmenite grains. Wet and dry concentration circuits, utilizing spiral, wet magnet, high tension and plate electrostatic separators have been G47designed to produce ilmenite from the ore. Studies to utilize the titanium content of the Barrytown ilmenite have been made. Recent work has been directed towards a titanium dioxide pigment process.

Suppliers of products and services have a pivotal role in sustainable development in the mining and minerals industry. Reputable suppliers know their products and services, and the industry, and have unique knowledge of these in relation to their customerÆs needs. Petroleum hydrocarbon suppliers, in particular, impact upon a mineÆs sustainability because of the extensive reach of petroleum hydrocarbons into the mining and minerals life-cycle. The petroleum hydrocarbon life-cycle is a useful framework to enable engagement between supplier and customer on the issue of sustainability. The life-cycle starts with supply of fuels, lubricants and services at the mine, through to plant operation and maintenance, transport of mined products, ship loading, and finally through to mineral processing and other downstream value-adding. There are barriers to leveraging supplierÆs capabilities which have to be overcome before the industry will gain the potential benefits from such supplier engagement.

Titanium dioxide (TiG ) is produced 2 commercially by two methods generally referred to as the "sulfate" route and the "chloride" route. The SCM Corporation, in supplying 15% of the world's demand for TiO 2, uses both of these processes. Of the two processes the sulfate route is generally regarded as the older and more established technology. Worldwide the sulfate route accounts for some 70% of total Ti02 production. However, in the U.S.A. the chloride process accounts for 80% of production. The processes vary in chemistry and raw material requirements. In the "sulfate" process finely ground ilmenite or titanium slag is digested with sulfuric acid to produce a porous "cake" vrnich is extracted with water and recovered liquor. The solution is treated with scrap iron to reduce any ferric ions to the ferrous state which is then crystallised and removed as ferrous sulfate heptahydrate. The liquor is concentrated by evaporation and hydrolysed to form the insoluble hydroxide which is filtered and washed free of impurities. This is converted to the dioxide by calcination at 800 - 1000¦C and milled to break up any aggregates. The "chloride" process uses a higher quality feedstock of natural or synthetic rutile and/or high grade titania slag. The feedstock is mixed with ground high-purity coke and chlorinated at 950¦C in a fluidised bed. The resulting crude titanium tetrachloride is purified by distillation and chemical treatment. The purified titanium tetrachloride is burned with oxygen or oxygen enriched air to give titanium dioxide and chlorine, which is recovered and recycled to chlorination. Titanium dioxide pigment from both processing routes undergoes similar finishing techniques. It is subjected to further stages of wet and dry milling, then coated with layers of inorganic oxides in order to enhance its properties for specialist applications.

SINCE 1900, five underground fires of consequence have beenrecorded in the Broken Hill mines. These occurred at the Junction(1906), Proprietary (1906 and 1916), Block 14 (1906), and Centralmines (1923). All have been extinguished, but at an enormouscost; e.g., in the eleven months following on the 1923 Central mine fire the sum of £187,123 was expended in fire-fighting operations.To this series may be added others, as the South (1925) and British mine (1918) fires, which were extinguished before serious damage had resulted. All, however, have occurred within a period of 28 years, and in a district where spontaneous combustion, a prolific source of fire in the U.S.A., has been practically nonexistent. Therefore, definite fire risks exist in the underground workings of the Broken Hill mines, and, as a consequence, an active fire prevention policy is a necessity...

These' limitations have led to the development of a totally new concept of screening, the Rotating Probability Screen. In order to illustrate the practical benefits to be gained by the extraction of fine materials ahead of subse quent processes particularly in the coal industry, the experiences gained in Ro-Pro installations in America, Australia, Europe and Britain are drawn upon.

Ashanti Goldfields CompanyÆs (AshantiÆs) most recent development is the Geita Project in the Lake Victoria Goldfield of NW Tanzania. It comprises six distinct gold deposits within two mineralised trends: Nyankanga, Lone Cone, Geita Hill (Geita trend) and Matandani, Kukuluma and Area 3 West (Kukuluma trend). Between 1936 and 1966, the Geita area produced an estimated 5.5 M tonnes of ore from five underground deposits at an average recovered grade of 5.3 g/t. The discovery of Nyankanga was made by Ashanti in 1996 from RAB drilling of a +100 ppb Au anomaly in laterite soil above ferricrete cover. The Kukuluma trend was discovered by SAMAX Resources (taken over by Ashanti in 1998) between 1996 and 1997 from RC drilling of a +80 ppb Au laterite soil anomaly. Oxide facies banded iron formation (BIF) of the Upper Nyanzian System forms prominent topographic ridges and is the dominant host lithology for gold mineralisation. The ridges are flanked by felsic tuff units which lie stratigraphically above. Syn-genetic lamprophyre (vogesite) and post-genetic felsic dykes are also seen in the Geita trend. At Nyankanga a granodiorite-diorite suite has intruded as dykes and sills into BIF from a plug centred on a WNW fault and has produced wallrock alteration assemblages similar to those seen in Cu-porphyry systems (potassic, propylitic, etc) as well as sulphide and gold deposition. However, the main ore-grade mineralisation (as in the rest of the Geita trend) is controlled by low-to-medium angle structures dipping north-west and north with numerous splays in the hanging wall. High-grade shoots at Nyankanga plunge to the west and to the north-west, being lithologically and fault-controlled respectively. At Geita Hill the higher grade shoots are controlled by fold noses in BIF dipping to the north. Free gold occurs within fractures of sulphides. The deposits of Kukuluma and Matandani occur on an ancient (possibly Cretaceous) erosional plateau and are related to two WNW to NW trending shear zones, discordant to the local strike of the BIF sequence. Complete oxidation occurs up to 120 m depth and there is a strong supergene component to the gold distribution. Primary gold mineralisation is divisible into two distinct assemblages: arsenopyriteûpyrrhotiteûmagnetiteûchlorite associated with brecciated cherts and pyrite associated with shaley banded ironstones. Area 3W is most likely the fault-displaced extension of the same mineralised trend and comprises thin, intermittent zones of high-grade gold mineralisation occurring adjacent to a ridge in banded cherts and minor BIF. Current resources (measured, indicated and inferred) for the project are estimated at 89.24 Mt at an average grade of 4.17 g/t (11.97 Moz of contained gold) at a 1.0 g/t cut-off grade. Of this 9.83 Moz is within the Geita trend and 2.14 Moz is within the Kukuluma trend. A resource of 2.74 Moz is from an inferred resource at depth at Nyankanga where the viability of an underground operation is being studied. Proven and probable reserves are 49.77 Mt @ 3.46 g/t (5.54 Moz) based on a $325/oz gold price providing a mine life of ten years at an average production rate of 500 000 oz per year. Reserve estimation was carried out using mineable polygons to select resource blocks based on a series of mining and costs parameters. In addition key cost parameters were tested to provide sensitivities for pit optimisations and pathfinders for negotiations with suppliers and contractors. Construction began in March 1999 and first gold is expected to be poured in the second-quarter 2000.

The use of chemical additives to initiate such processes as particulate separation through flotation or dewatering through flocculation, is common in the mining industry. The dosing of additives is none the less poorly controlled from a process control viewpoint and it is perhaps fortuitous that over-dosing or misuse of chemicals is rarely catastrophic to the production cycle. In many cases, such events would go undetected if it were not for economic considerations. Recently, the advent of orebodies with finer mineral disseminations and the push for greater efficiencies in both production and tailing disposal have resulted in the need for greater control of the dosing and utilisation of chemical additives. The need to grind at higher pulp densities and to finer sizes and to dewater to higher solid contents are but two examples that require a more stringent understanding of the true role of additives in controlling the rheology of suspensions and the influence of additives on the surface chemistry of particles. The inter-relationship between the surface chemistry of particles and the role of additives in controlling suspension rheology is now well understood for systems in which the average particle shape in the mixture is spherical or close to spherical. Luckily, this is the case for a large number of systems in the mining industry and the true role of typical additives in these systems will be explored. Difficulties arise for suspensions containing clays or other platey or needle shaped minerals and in many cases, quite small quantities of platey minerals dominate the rheology of suspensions. The role of additives in controlling the rheology of asymmetric particle systems is more complex but the effect of the additive in changing particle alignment in solution is the key to understanding suspension behaviour. The manipulation of the rheology of asymmetric particle systems will also be explored.

My paper presents a discussion of the legislative and departmental requirements in connection with the acquisition of exploration rights for minerals (other than petroleum and coal) in the Independant State of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Queensland and he practical problems associated with land entry and land ownership associated therewith. In general there are many similarities in the methodology and philosophy behind the legislation in each country and the contractual requirements established thereby between the exploration company (the explorer) and the government and the mines department or equivalent in each place. There are also a number of differences. I have prepared the paper on the basis that my audience will largely consist of -experienced explorers and the paper is intended to act as a brief refresher and a guide to the philosophy and the practicalities behind the legislation and practices in ground entry in each case. I will deal in turn with New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and then Queensland.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a synchrotron-only technique used to determine chemical speciation, providing a powerful alternative to most traditional ‘wet chemistry’ and lab-based speciation methods. XAS is an element specific method that can be used to address a variety of systems, ranging from heterogeneous to homogeneous, polycrystalline to amorphous, and solid to liquid. The strength of XAS in identifying and managing chemical species in tailings and mine waste is demonstrated, with the presentation of highly relevant studies into lead, uranium, chromium and arsenic speciation. The Early Proterozoic metamorphic rocks of the Broken Hill (BH) Block have been recently subdivided into sixteen formations and four groups (Willis et al., 1983b, Stevens et al., 1983). This stratigraphic subdivision has relied upon recognition of distinctive mapped rock units and "associations" of mapped rock units, which characterize particular lithostratigraphic units. The rock units and rock unit associations define local ordered sequences which can be compared and correlated, thereby establishing the stratigraphic succession. In the Clevedale homestead, Thackaringa, BH City, Bores Mine-Freyers mine, Silver King mine, and Brewery Well areas, coherent stratigraphic successions have been interpreted. These areas illustrate the regional variability of the stratigraphic succession and facies changes within individual stratigraphic units. Stratigraphic type sections are located in the Thackaringa, Bores Mine-Freyers mine, Silver King mine, and Brewery Well areas. The principles of stratigraphic interpretation applied in the BH Block can be used in other areas of Willyama Supergroup outcrop such as the Euriowie, Olary and Mount Painter Blocks. The general technique may also have applicability to other highly deformed and metamorphosed terrains.

There is a growing demand for copper driven by its applications in renewable energy and electric vehicles. Sulfide ores are an important source of copper. Flotation is a critical front-end process used to remove gangue minerals and concentrate the copper minerals. The electrochemical activity of sulfide minerals contributes to their overall activity in the flotation pulp. The mineral rest potential dictates how collectors interact with the mineral surface, and hence ultimately on the flotation response. Dissolved oxygen, (DO), pH, redox potential (Eh) and water composition and ionic strength are also significant in controlling flotation performance. The aim of this investigation was to determine the influence of the electrochemical environment both during milling and flotation on the flotation behaviour of bornite and chalcocite. For this investigation, the interactions of collector with bornite and chalcocite were studied using synthetic plant water (SPW1) and deionised water (DIW) at 5 different pH levels. Sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) was used both in microflotation, collector adsorption and zeta potential tests.

This study represents a part of comprehensive research aimed at integrating nickel into a thermodynamic database constantly developed at Pyrosearch. The behaviour of Ni in calcium-ferrite slags is considered. An integrated approach combining experimental and thermodynamic modelling methods has been employed to predict phase equilibria in the NiO-CaO-FeO-Fe2O3 system under oxidising conditions and in equilibrium with the metal FeNi phase. The compositions of liquid slags and coexisting solid solutions have been determined through the analysis of equilibrated and quenched samples by electron probe microanalysis technique (EPMA). The research results are presented in the form of liquidus projections on the corresponding phase diagrams, considering both oxidising and reducing conditions. The solubility of Ni in spinel, dicalcium ferrite and calcium oxide as well as solubility of Fe and Ca in Ni monoxide, have been examined under several atmospheric conditions. Additionally, the compositions of the NiO-FeO monoxide in equilibrium with metal phase have been studied. The experimental data not only support the outcomes of thermodynamic modelling but also validate the parameters of the applied thermodynamic models, thus confirming the reliability and accuracy of the integrated approach.
