"Corrosion of underground support measures constitutes a concern to industry in both safety and economic terms. It also represents a potential market for corrosion resistant materials such as stainless steel.In order to assess the market potential for a stainless steel friction rock bolt, a review of current corrosion processes and remedial or preventative measures in the underground environment was undertaken. This was supplemented by distribution to industry of a detailed questionnaire, concerning the magnitude and extent of support corrosion and the costs of current support measures, and by visits to selected sites. Following data synthesis, support costs were established and the economic benefit of stainless steel rock bolts evaluated.Stainless steel rock bolts can be an effective cost reducing measure in unscreened areas requiring frequent reconditioning. Their benefit is rapidly diminished, however, if only partial reconditioning is required, the reconditioning interval is long or if screening is required.While most industry personnel are receptive to the application of stainless steel support measures, the localization of corrosion problems and the potential high cost of this type of support are barriers to its widespread implementation. They have potential for use in extreme environments. However, this relatively small market may not be economically viable.IntroductionFriction rock bolts are the simplest of all interior rock fixtures. The friction resistance to sliding of the rock on the bolt is generated by a radial pressure against the borehole wall over the length of the bolt. Two types of friction rock bolts are currently marketed, the Split Set and the Swellex.Unlike conventional point anchor bolts, friction rock stabilizers may move relative to the rock strata and maintain their capacity even if rock shifts, a condition that sometimes loosens or breaks conventional bolts. Ease of installation, effectiveness in jointed as well as weaker rock, and the possibility of having relatively long bolts are a few of the many advantages which generate considerable interest in the application of friction rock bolts (Wijk and Skogberg, 1982). However, due to their thin-walled construction and large surface area, frictional rock stabilizers are more susceptible than conventional bolts to damage by corrosion. For this reason, they are normally not recommended for long-term use (Jolly and Neumeier, 1987).In light of the above discussion; the Nickel Development Institute commissioned a study by the Geomechanics Research Centre with the objective of generating a credible database for the assessment of the feasibility of a stainless steel friction bolt system in corrosive ground and mine environments."

"The Plastojrost apparatus, developed by Ritter and Juranek in the 1960s has been modified primarily, to automatic temperature control. A limited investigation of carboniferous and cretaceous coal samples showed that both coals undergo the same changes when coked in the Plastofrost unit. Dilatometer plastic range and total dilatation correlated well with the Piastofrost plastic range for the carboniferous Appalachian coal, but not for the cretaceous western Canadian coal. Work to elucidate the characteristics of some western Canadian coals using the Plastofrost is in progress. IntroductionCoke quality is critically affected by the properties of the plastic phase in the coal-to-coke transformation. Since these properties exist in a coke oven and are not measurable, they are approximated by standard laboratory tests, such as free swelling index, plastometry, and dilatometry. Of particular interest to us is the anomalous behaviour of western Canadian coals of cretaceous origin. By many predictive methods, these coals should not produce coherent cokes. When coked in pilot scale test ovens, in fact, they produce cokes of good stability. They typically make up 20% of Japanese coking coal blends and are also used in South Korea, Mexico, Brazil, and several European countries. This anomalous behaviour has been studied in our laboratory<8.9.1O). Plastic properties or rheological tests examine just the external ramifications of the coal-to-coke transformation. To understand the process, however, microscopic examination of the coal and coke seems to be needed. The Plastofrost unit has been shown to be a convenient means to this end."

The HydroFloat TM is an innovative fluidized-bed separator that can substantially increase the upper particle size that can be successfully treated by flotation. Recent studies conducted using laboratory, bench-scale and pilot-scale equipment indicate that this technology can be used to float coarse sulfide middlings that cannot be recovered by conventional flotation machines. Recent data collected from pilotscale tests conducted at a base metal concentrator indicate that this technology can float middlings particles as large as 850 microns in diameter containing as little as 1% exposed hydrophobic mineral. As such, the crossover of this technology into the base metals industry has the potential to substantially reduce grinding costs and increase concentrator recovery/capacity through the use of split-feed circuitry. The split-feed concept, which is often used for upgrading industrial minerals, involves segregation of the feed into more than one size class followed by subsequent upgrading using mills/separators/reagents specifically optimized for each size class. In this article, a split-feed circuit is described that utilizes two stages of classifying cyclones in conjunction with the HydroFloat_ separator. The circuit is designed to recover, recycle and regrind coarse middlings containing small amounts of valuable mineral while simultaneously rejecting coarse well-liberated siliceous gangue so that mill throughput can be increased. Simulation data conducted using well-known process models suggest that this approach can increase existing primary mill capacity by up to 25% with only modest investments in new classifying and flotation equipment.

"Annual mining revenue can be computed by formulae relating metal prices, smelting schedules, concentrate grade and recovery to known ore grade and an assessment of core samples. Operating costs at different daily tonnages are related to orebody shape, mining method, milling process and general plant services. Capital costs are related to sizing of mining equipment, mine development, plant-site topography, climate and accessibility, plant services and personnel housing. IntroductionA crude guide to the average 1978 cost of mine projects is shown in Figure 1, but the costs of many mine projects have differed widely from the graphed average costs of $800,000 T0.6 for underground mine/mill projects and $400,000 T 0.6 for low-grade open-pit mine/mill projects.High mine project costs and high operating costs are characteristic of open-pit mines with high stripping ratios, underground mines with thin orebodies, mills with complex metallurgy, and projects located in isolated regions with severe climate, mountainous topography, and lacking access to existing roads, towns and electric power. When none of these adverse conditions prevailed, the mine project cost was typically much less than the graphed average cost. Virtually all the conditions likely to cause high capital and operating costs are known from knowledge of the local topography, climate or accessibility, or can be assessed by tests on core samples, as soon as the orebody has been outlined by drilling .A more accurate estimate of over-all project capital cost and operating cost can be made from a summation of items of cost after judging the effect of specific local conditions on each item of capital and operating cost. This paper offers guides in judging the effect of local conditions on the sizing and 1978 cost of specific items of capital cost and operating cost and operating cost of mine projects. When the specific items of capital cost and operating cost are totaled and measured against expected net revenue and taxes over the life of the mine using the net-present-value or discount-cash-flow methods, the result should show whether the mine project development is clearly feasible, doubtfully feasible or clearly uneconomic. If the development of the mine project is clearly feasible, or probably feasible, a detailed feasibility study by experienced consulting engineers should be commissioned before any financial commitments are made; but if project development appears to be uneconomic, the time and cost of a detailed feasibility study is not warranted."

Ceramic clays of the Prairie Provinces range in age from Lower Cretaceous to Pleistocene and Recent. Two significant ceramic clay horizons are the Paleocene Willo wbunch Member of the Ravenscrag Formation in Southern Saskatchewan and the Upper Cretaceous Whitemud Formation, which is found in Saskatchewan and Alberta. The Willowbunch Member is worked at one locale in Saskatchewan; the Whitemud Formation is worked at several locales in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Bentonite operations are found at Morden in Manitoba, Rosalind and Onoway in Alberta, and Wilcox in Saskatchewan.

"A computer model has been developed for evaluating the performance of truck and shovel operations in an open-pit mine. The data required for describing the haulage network are simplified and shift startup and ending procedures specific to any given mine can be incorporated into the model readily . The model uses a FORTRAN-based simulation language SLAM and can be tailored to the conditions and practices of a particular mine.The model is used to analyze truck and shovel operations, evaluate different haulage layouts in the planning stage, or compare the expected performance of alternative truck dispatching systems.Stochastic simulation is used to model the random variation in time required f or the individual activities. This gives a more realistic representation of the processes under study. Simulation runs show good agreement with actual performance. The model is especially useful for examining alternatives in equipment acquisition , haulroad design, truck-shovel allocation and dispatching methods. The results of such simulations provide a sound basis f or making major management decisions.IntroductionTruck haul age is widely used in open-pit mining operations. It is also the largest cost item in the operating costs of an openpit mine, in some cases accounting for an estimated 50% of operating costs(1) , Truck replacements, which are necessary from time to time, involve large amounts of cap ital. Increasing depth of mining and consequent increase in stripping ratios require additional capital investment in the truck-shovel fleet. The sharp rise in energy costs over the last decade has also contibuted significantly to an increase in truck fleet operating costs . All these factors have led mine operators to search for ways to improve the effectiveness of the truck-shovel fleet, in order to lower costs and maintain a profitable operation in the face of declining markets and increasing world wide competition.Control of truck haulage in an open-pit mine is usually done in one of two ways."

"Bricks made from local Paleozoic shales, and floor and wall tiles made from imported clays, both established record production volumes in 1985 and are the strongest segments of Ontario &apos;s clay products industries. However, renewed interest in traditional materials also supports a good market for clay flower pots and flu e liners, and innovative processing studies are showing promise for possible new production of clay roofing tiles. This paper reviews the highlights of a comprehensive study of Ontario&apos;s clay products industries, completed in 1986. IntroductionFor some years now, Ontario&apos; s clay products industries have been unspectacular in their attempt to cope with the recent recession and the impact of alternative materials. But a strong demand for bricks in recent years has done much to dispel the gloom.Bricks, drainage tiles, sewer pipes, flue liners, structural and partition tiles, and flower pots have been commonly referred to as ""heavy"" clay products, and they have been based largely on local clays and shales. To this list might be added expanded aggregate and mineral wool. Clay refractories, sanitary ware, electrical porcelain , art pottery, and floor and wall tiles are not considered heavy clay products, and are commonly made from a variety of ceramic materials, many of which are imported.Production facilities for heavy clay products often began in Ontario as small family enterprises, using whatever clay was available locally to supply the local market with building bricks and other clay products needed for construction. Description of the Springhill Coal Field The Springhill coal basin, which lies in the approximate centre of Cumberland county, Nova Scotia, is of Carboniferous age, and forms a syncline plunging to the westward at an angle of 32° at the outcrop but gradually flattening to the dip. It contains several workable seams of varying thicknesses, a generalized section of the measures in descending order from the surface being: [] The 1,114 feet of strata is composed of shales and sandstones, and all of the coal seams mentioned, with the exception of No. 4 and No. 5, have been mined commercially. The coal is said to be the best steam and domestic coal in the Province of Nova Scotia.

"The Sherritt Gordon mine is 100 miles north of The Pas in northern Manitoba. Copper-zinc ore was discovered on the property in 1922. Production began in 1931 and continued to June, 1932, when operations were suspended because of the low price of copper. Operations were resumed on August 1st, 1937, and have been carried on continuously from that time to the present (March 1947). The production of metals up to the end of 1945 was copper, 287,129,880 lb.; zinc concentrate (50 per cent) 104,419 tons ; gold, 79,388 oz.; silver, 2,529,974 oz.GENERALThe ore occurs in two deposits, the east and the west. Both are enclosed in gneisses that are highly metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic derivatives. The rock beneath the deposits, and hence forming their footwall, is gneissoid quartzite; the hanging-wall rock is basic garnetiferous hornblende gneiss. Pegmatite commonly occurs along both foot- and hangingwall peripheries and as isolated blocks and fragments within the ore zone . These blocks and fragments are considered to be residuals of unreplaced host rock .The ore is relatively coarse grained and ranges from the massive to the disseminated type. The metallic sulphides composing these, named in the order of their abundance, are pyrite and pyrrhotite ( 2-1 ratio) , chalcopyrite, sphalerite (marmatite) , and minor chalmeriite; subordinate amounts of gold and silver are recovered . The insoluble content of the ore averages about 35 per cent.Another deposit known as the Bob Lake, much smaller and lower in grade but having very similar relationships, occurs about 3 ½ miles to the northeast of the main Sherritt Gordon ore masses.STRUCTUREThe Sherritt Gordon orebodies are of the replacement type, and lie within a pegmatite sill that has been intruded along a contact between quartzite and hornblende gneiss. The two main orebodies are intimately related, for the east deposit is an erosional remnant of the lower, easterly limit of an orebody once continuous with the west body. The ore lies along the southwest limb of an overturned syncline."

IN the summer of 1937, the Algoma Steel Corporation, Limited, decided to embark on the full-scale development o their Helen mine and the erection of plants to produce commercial iron sinter from its ores at a rate ? of fifteen hundred tons per day. The Helen deposit has long been known as one of the largest bodies of non-commercial iron ore in Canada, consisting almost entirely of siderite with a band of pyrite along the north wall and some lenticular inclusions of pyrite throughout the mass. It originally contained a nominal amount of hematite (2,800,000 tons), localized at the western end of the ore-body, but this was mined out during the years 1900 to 1918. For details of the:-geology of the Helen range and of the surrounding district, the reader is referred to Memoir 147, Michipicoten Iron Ranges, Geological Survey of Canada, 1926 (1). The siderite mass was explored by diamond drilling in 1917 and the portion so drilled was estimated to contain 67 million tons of siderite averaging 36.0 per cent Fe, 3.2 per cent S, and 8.2 per cent SiO,, without establishing its ultimate depth or extent. The variation in the sulphur content shown by drilling was from 1.5 per cent in 72 per cent of the tonnage, to 7.2 percent in the remaining 28 percent. The pyritic ore aver-aged about 38 percent iron, but otherwise its composition was substantially the same as that of the siderite mass.

This paper deals with the practical problems as sociated with blasting a heated pillar remnant. This pillar remnant was the final stage in the blasting of a multi-stag e pillar blast. Production from the previous stages had produced burning sulphide ore, resulting in high rock temperatures in the final unblasted stage. This is an account of how, under difficult conditions, the pillar remnant was blasted.

"The Rexspar uranium deposits are located near Birch Island in central British Columbia. The property lies within the Omineca crystalline belt of the Cordilleran Orogen. Gneiss, schist, tuffaceous and porphyritic trachyte are the main rock types encountered on the property. These rocks are of pre-Late Triassic or probable Mississippian age.Lenticular bodies of mica and pyrite-rich rock are the host of three closely spaced uranium deposits and are found close to a fluorite deposit. The altered trachytic rock as well as the fluorite and uranium deposits are found in the upper part of the trachyte unit. The latest tonnage estimates are 1,441,820 tonnes averaging 23.46% CaF, for the fluorite deposit, 490,966 tonnes of 0.084% U10afor the 'W' deposit, 164,290 tonnes of 0.074% UP8 for the ""B"" deposit and 459,124 tonnes of 0. 071 o/o UP8 for the ""BD"" deposit.A hydrothermal replacement origin was first proposed for the fluorite and uranium deposits. The mineralizing and altering solutions would have been genetically related to a felsic batholith outcropping a few kilometres south of the property. Another hypothesis has been proposed more recently. A volcanic centre has been tentatively identified in the upper part of the trachyte unit, close to the mineral deposits. The fluorite and uranium deposits could possibly be volcanogenic, rather than related to the Cretaceous felsic batholith.IntroductionFluorite and uranium mineralization occur on the property of Consolidated Rexspar Minerals and Chemicals Ltd. in central British Columbia. The exploration and development works executed over the years are summarized in this paper. The deposits and their geological environment are described but the origin of the mineralization has not been definitely established."

QIT. born in 1948 from a joint-venture between Kennecott Copper Corporation and New Jersey Zinc Company, was acquired from BP Minerals by RTZ Corporation PLC in 1989 and remains its wholly owned subsidiary ever since.lImenite is a mineral rich in both titanium and iron oxides. QIT&apos;s proprietary mineral enrichment and electric smelting processes permit the concentration of the ilmenite ore and the separation of its main constituents to produce a 80% TiO2, slag and a high purity molten iron which is further transformed into iron ingots (pigs), steel billets, iron and steel powders.QIT&apos;s ilmenite deposit is located in the Lake TIo-A1Iard area, 43 km inIand from Havre St. Pierre, a community on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River some 960 km from Montreal. The orebody, covering some 542 000 m2, consists primarily of coarse-grained ilmenite (FeO.TiO2) with disseminated fine lenses of hematite (Fe2O3). The worthless mineral (gangue) associated with ilmenite is mainly anorthosite, a complex silicate. QITs mining operations are carried out using conventional open pit methods in a 500 m by 600 m horse-shoe shaped mine with nine benches developed. Primary blasting is performed on a weekly basis during the mining season. Blasted ore is trucked to the crushing station to be broken down to 15 cm and 7.5 cm sizes, respectively, by means of a primary jaw crusher and a secondary cone crusher. Minus 7.S cm ilmenite is then loaded into hopper cars for the 43 km trip to the Havre St. Pierre terminal where it is stockpiled and reclaimed by under-ground conveyor chutes to a ship loading tower at the dock. The crushed ore is shipped to QIT&apos;s smelter located in Sorel in 40 000 tonne carriers from April to December."

"The On-Stream Analyzer has proven, and is still proving to be, an extremely valuable tool for the control of flotation circuits. This paper examines the possibility of going further in the utilization of the analyzer results by using a real-time material balance program to calculate the mass flow rates within the streams of a circuit for process control, analysis and optimization as well as for the detection of sensor malfunction. The material balance algorithm improves measurements and give good estimates of unmeasured variables during normal operating conditions. The potential and limitations of the method are illustrated using results of an application to the Line 3 flotation circuit of Brunswick Mining and Smelting, New Brunswick.IntroductionThe On-Stream Analyzer (OSA) has gained, over the last two decades, the status of key instrument for the control of flotation plants. The OSA is currently used in almost every sulphide flotation plant and its application in oxide mineral flotation plants isincreasing. Commercial OSAs include a sampling system that collectssamples from various streams of a circuit and exposes thesamples to an X-ray beam. The sample then generates X-ray pulsesthat are converted into assays using multilinear regression programs(Leroux and Franklin, 1994). The estimated assays arepassed to the flotation operators via operator consoles, or to controlloops of various degrees of complexity (McKee, 1991), whichmanipulate reagent addition, aeration rate or froth thickness toensure an adequate operation of the plant. "Muon tomography allows investigating the subsurface. Muons being penetrative, the attenuation of the muon flux depends on the quantity of matter the particles travel through, hence on the rock density and thickness. For the Temporal Tomography of rock Density using Muon Measurements (T2DM2) project, the muon flux measurements are performed in LSBB URL (http://www.lsbb.eu) in order to study the hydrogeological processes in the unsaturated area of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse karst aquifer. The suitability of the muography for this study is here numerically demonstrated. In parallel to these simulations, muon flux measurements are carried out in the LSBB galleries by means of a set of four scintillator tanks and Micromegas detectors are developed. These detectors, here described, are adapted for underground and confined spaces as well as other environments. Their performances are particularly interesting and should contribute to the expansion of muon tomography in new application fields. INTRODUCTIONMuon tomography or muography is a method to image large volumes by measuring the absorption of cosmic ray muons. It uses, in a passive way, a natural radiation source: the muons which are charged particles produced in the atmosphere. Primary cosmic rays interact with atmospheric nuclei and produce a huge number of secondary particles, including muons. Due to their important mass compared to electrons, they are highly penetrating, reaching several hundreds of meters below the surface. Their attenuation depends on the quantity of matter they cross. That's why they are used to investigate the subsurface, muon absorption measurement allowing to estimate the in-situ density of the rock.Georges (Georges, 1955) proposed in 1955 to use the muons in order to study the density variations caused by the overburden over an Australian tunnel. In 1970, Alvarez (Alvarez, 1970) imaged the internal structure of Chephren Pyramid thanks to this method. The muon tomography has been particularly developed for volcanology (Nagamine, 1995; Tanaka, 2007; Lesparre, 2010; Carloganu, 2013) over the last twenty years. Since the beginning of the 2010's, a growing amount of projects that proposed to use the muons in various fields get underway: the CO2 storage (Kudryavtsev, 2012), the exploration of Mars (Kedar, 2013), etc."

"Introduction Background The Frobisher voyages of 1577 and 1578 were organized by the Cathay Company for the express purpose of finding and mining gold ore. Since publication of the Baffm expedition of Charles Francis Hallill, the location of Kodlunarn or Countess of Warwick Island, the headquarters of Frobisher&apos;s third (1578) voyage, and focal point of the largest Arctic voyage of all time, has been known to the world. Through Hall we also know the location of the Countess of Warwick Mine on Kodlunarn Island. However, the exact locations of the other mines are not known. Of the ""ore"" we know little. Pieces of the original ""black stone"", once as large as ""a half-penny loaf&apos; have now disappeared altogether. Specimens collected at random from the repository of shipments in England and from loose rock on Kodlunarn Island were termed, respectively, ""hornblende pyroxenite"" and ""amphibolite"" and from a locale about 200 yards from Kodlunarn as (hornblende) ""pyroxenite""121. However, it is uncertain whether these specimens are representative of Kodlunarn or of the other mines, although Blackadar131 notes that, in the northern trench of Kodlunarn, biotite gneiss contains lenses and bands of amphibolite. The ""gold"" itself is even less well defined. It has long been accepted that gold was virtually absent in Frobisher&apos;s ore. The ""gold"" has been termed pyrite, biotite and both biotite and pyrite together. Even t h e word "" marquesset"" , which appears and reappears in contemporary descriptions, is nebulous and is defined as ""a stone participating in the nature of some metal, yet in so small quantity, that the metal cannot be melted from it"" (0.E.D., definition of 1616)."

"The legal background f or environmental issues, and the growing emphasis both from government and private concerns of corporate and management liability for environmental problems provides one of the driving forces behind the growing concern with environmental law for the future. One prime objective must be the identification and minimization of potential liability, both for the corporation and its officers, directors and employees.This paper will identify the basis for liability of individuals and corporations for environmental matters, focussing on current legal requirements, and the appropriate legal response to events of such potential liability. It will also consider the reduction of liability through the implementation of management systems and environmental policies in order to ensure due diligence both with respect to corporate responsibility and the responsibility of the individuals within the corporation.IntroductionConsolidated Professor Mines Ltd . and its predecessor have been exploring in northwestern Ontario for about sixty years . During the last twenty years, the company has been interested in developing a gold mine, the Duport Project, on Stevens Island in Shoal Lake . The lake straddles the border between Ontario and Manitoba and is a drinking water supply for Winnipeg and environs.The Duport Project involves the mining of 450 t/day grading an average of 0.35 oz Ault of ore . At the minesite, located on Steven s Island in Shoal Lake, only preliminary processing of the ore will take place, to produce gravity and flotation concentrates for final gold recover y at a mainland plant well removed from the Shoal Lake watershed. No hazardous chemicals will be used at the island site."
