This paper reports the anodizing voltage, gas evolution and sparking behaviors of an anodized coating formed on AZ91D in a silicate containing solution. According to their responses to an anodizing current, a four-stage anodizing mechanism is proposed. At the same time, the formed coating is characterized in terms of its microstructure, composition, thickness and corrosion performance. It was found that deposition of MgSiO3, Mg(OH)2 and MgO as well as dehydration of Mg(OH)2 are involved in the anodising process; the vigorous gas evolution accompanied by intensive sparking and the corresponding negative anodising efficiency in the later stage of the anodising process are closely associated with thermal decomposition of water due to the high temperature resulting from the intense sparking on the surface of the anodized alloy; the thickness, porosity, and composition of the anodised coating on a magnesium alloy depend on the final anodising cell voltage; and the corrosion resistance of a thick but porous coating containing more silicates appears to be more corrosion resistant than a thin but compact coating containing less silicates.

"Shore Gold Inc. (Shore) is presently designing a diamond processing plant for the Star and the Orion South kimberlite deposits in the Fort à la Corne (FalC) area in central Saskatchewan. The first step in the plant is diamond liberation and occurs in the comminution section. Diamond liberation is the process of breaking up the kimberlite rock, as gently as possible so as not to damage the diamonds.Autogenous grinding mills (AG mills) use a combination of impact crushing, abrasion and attrition to break up the kimberlite. The forces that occur during the actions of abrasion and attrition cause the kimberlites to break up preferentially along lines of weaknesses which offers a “diamond friendly” method of comminution.Hard competent kimberlite is commonly found in the diatreme zone as well as the root zone of the volcanic pipe and is the source of kimberlite for most of the Southern African diamond mines. Softer kimberlite is typically found in and around the crater area of a volcanic pipe and it is this kimberlite that makes up the majority of kimberlite for both the Star and Orion South deposits. These softer kimberlites can be readily broken up using abrasion and attrition imparted by AG mills. In order for Shore to benefit from the softer kimberlite found in the Star - Orion South diamond project, two large (10.97 m diameter x 7.10 m long) AG mills were designed for the comminution section based on extensive test work and simulations by Metso Minerals (Metso)."

The current paper is focused on evaluating the behavior of copper in a copper production slag and the assessment of metal recovery possibilities. For this reason, thermodynamic calculations were carried out to determine the influence of parameters such as slag composition, temperature and oxygen partial pressure on recovery of non-ferrous elements. It was found that the formation of a solid face centered cubic (fcc) phase, mainly consisting of iron, limits the extent of reduction that can be achieved for an industrial process. However, it could be discovered that solubility of iron in the Cu-rich liquid alloy strongly depends on presence of other elements, particularly arsenic. As part of the results of this study, the solubility of Cu in the slag at onset of fcc phase formation is presented as function of temperature, oxygen partial pressure and concentration of MgO and CaO. It was concluded that lower temperature (1200°C) and higher CaO addition (16 mass-% in this study), would result in the highest achievable copper recovery from slag. INTRODUCTION Copper slag is produced as a by-product of the copper production process. The slag is still containing a high amount of copper and other valuable metals. This demands further treatment of the slag as a secondary source of metals. In addition, the physical/mechanical properties of slag allow its use in several applications such as hydraulic engineering, civil engineering, as an abrasive and many more. These applications help reducing the use of natural resources like rock and sand. By decreasing the content of heavy metals such as Cu, Pb, Zn and As in the slag, its application in abovementioned fields becomes more attractive as the probability of releasing these elements to the environment is further reduced. To develop a pyrometallurgical slag reduction process, it is necessary to understand what describes the end point of the reduction. This point is expected at maximum copper recovery without facing operational challenges. Existing literature provide some information on the effect of different parameters such as temperature or concentration of different slag formers, on solubility of copper and heavy metals in different phases. However, due to complexity of industrial slags, equilibrium experiments and accurate thermodynamic modelling are essential to be able to reliably predict the behavior of different elements in the system and determine the end-point of reduction.

Worldwide, we estimate that corrosion destroys a quarter of the annual production of steel at a rate of 5 tons per second. Several techniques are used to protect against corrosion. Among these processes, Cathodic protection, which is regarded as the best technique to assure the protection of steel, works against this phenomenon. This is achieved either by a system of reactive anodes, or by the technique of impressed current protection or other techniques. Before any installation of cathodic protection, a preliminary study and pre-evaluation of certain parameters must be made. In the present work, we will present an example of dimensioning of an installation of cathodic protection by imposed current of a pipeline using solar energy, where we discuss the following items: ? Orebodies of the Renison Bell - Mt. Bischoff tinfield in Tasmania are stratabound, conformable lenses of massive cassiterite-bearing pyrrhotite, with underlying discordant, fault-fracture-controlled and more siliceous ore. The deposits occur in eugeosynclinal, trough-deposited sedimentary and mafic volcanic rocks which are stratigraphically equivalent to diff erentiated volcanic rocks that contain volcanogenic massive base metal sulphide deposits in a parallel arc to the east. Textures of the massive pyrrhotite ore suggest that it has undergone metamorphic recrystallization. Although the massive ore contains both monoclinic and hexagonal pyrrhotite, a study of a few samples from one orebody suggests that their distribution is stratigraphically controlled, with the monoclinic variety abundant only at the base. The distribution pattern of rare-earth elements in massive ore is similar to that of volcanogenic massive base metal sulphides in New Brunswick, and suggests that mixing of sea water with exhalative hydrothermal brines occurred during ore deposition. Tin is a common accessory element in many volcanogenic massive base metal sulphide deposits providing strong evidence that it, too, is transported and deposited by volcanic affiliated hydrothermal brines. Sedimentary rocks containing the massive orebodies are fine grained, thinly laminated, compositionally banded and of mixed chemical sedimentary-tuffaceous origin. They include finely recrystallized chert, carbonate-rich and pyritic varieties; and soft sediment deformation structures in these rocks suggest that dense sulphides deformed underlying, less dense chert prior to lithification. Close to ore the chert becomes massive and coarsely recrystallized, as does the carbonate, which is here strongly enriched in Fe and Mn. Apatite is present in pyritic, cherty and carbonate-rich beds and in the ore itself, in all of which it shows a similar pattern of rare-earth element distribution, suggesting that it is of marine sedimentary origin. These deposits have traditionally been considered as epigenetic replacements of favourable carbonate horizons by hydro thermal flu ids derived from later Devonian porphyritic intrusions. Some of these intrusions have associated tinbearing greisens. The above relationships suggest, alternatively, that, like massive base metal sulphides, the tin deposits were of original syn-sedimentary origin. Circulating hydrothermal brines generated during early Cambrian eugeosynclinal subsidence and tectonism rose through steep fault-fractures, there giving rise to the discordant orebodies, and were discharged on the sea floor, where the massive pyrrhotite lenses were precipitated with the associated cherts and carbonates. In some places, Devonian intrusions remobilized the earlier deposits, forming greisens and newepigenetic veins. Finally , the geologic selling of these deposits, in trough deposited sedimentary and mafic volcanic rocks, suggests another favourable environment for massive sulphide exploration which is quite different from the domal felsic volcanic environment so heavily favoured currently in North America

Recent interest in unconventional reservoirs motivates our work in laboratory measurements of seismic anisotropy. Seismic anisotropy is the variation in speed of a wave as a function of its direction of propagation. Analyzing anisotropy in unconventional reservoirs is important since anisotropy leads, for example, to differential stresses upon loading and could affect hydraulic stimulation (Reinicke et al., 2010, Zimmermann and Reinicke, 2009); in this sense, laboratory measurements are an important tool to study seismic anisotropy at small scales which can aid in the characterization of larger formations. The purpose of this work is to describe the laboratory methodology used to simultaneously measure ultrasonic P and S-waves in three different directions from a single core sample. Elastic anisotropy of a Proterozoic sedimentary rock from south-west Alberta is investigated. In metamorphic rocks seismic anisotropy is caused by preferred mineralogical alignment or foliation. Assuming a transversally isotropic medium, arrays of compressional and shear piezoelectric ceramic transducers were mounted on a sample trimmed from a core to measure travel times of ultrasonic P-waves and S-waves as a function of confining pressure at directions perpendicular, parallel, and oblique to the plane of foliation (bedding). Results show strong anisotropy agreeing with the assumption of a transversely isotropic medium. Dependence of travel times and hysteresis effects can be observed when pressurizing and depressurizing.

Tamano Refinery started its operation in 1972 with the cathode production capacity of 84,000 tons per year. After several expansions, the production capacity increased to 228,000 tons per year in 2001. In this paper, we are introducing our next expansion projects starting October 2006. The project expands the production capacity of cathode from 228,000 tons to 260,000 tons per year. The main modification of this project is the conversion to the ISA process and the installation of additional seventy-two cells in the No.2 Tankhouse. The No.1 Tankhouse remains the same, using the conventional process. Half of our starting sheet cells are converted to commercial cells. The other expansions are to enlarge our purification plant. And the incidental facilities are enlarged, for example, circulation tanks, heat exchangers, filtration system, etc. Finally, this paper describes those improvements to our refinery performance and preparing for future expansions.

"Zonation patterns are welt developed in the mafic metavolcanic rocks that host epigenetic quartz-carbonate-gold vein mineralization at the Hollinger-McIntyre deposit. Carbonate alteration assemblages are strongly zoned about mineralization. Proceeding inward from background greenschist facies rocks to alteration envelopes enclosing individual veins, the following assemblages are observed:Assemblage I-quartz-albite-chlorite-epidote-actinolite-(calcite)Assemblage II-quartz-albite-chlorite-calcite-epidoteAssemblage III-quartz-ankerite-sericite-(chlorite-calcite)Assemblage IV-quartz-albite-ankerite-sericiteLithogeochemical zoning is equally well developed as variations in whole-rock abundances ofAs, Au, Ba, Rb, and Sb. As and Ba form the most useful zonation patterns, outlining individual ore zones as well as broader trends of mineralization.Gas chromatographic analyses of fluid inclusions in the quartz-carbonate veins indicate that the mineralizing fluid was an H20-C02 mixture. Locally, CH4-rich fluid inclusions are associated with graphitic and/or carbonaceous wallrocks. Fluid inclusions in ore-bearing veins have higher CO2 contents than those in non-ore veins. Extensive sampling and analyses of veins from the area surrounding the deposit reveals a well developed zonation of CO2 contents about the main zone of mineralization. Low CO2 levels (1-2 mole%) in veins are peripheral to the deposit and increase to over 12 mole% in mineralized zones.The observed zoning of the carbonate alteration assemblages is a result of the addition of CO2 to the wallrock, which is consistent with the zoning of CO2 in the fluid inclusions.The zoning patterns delineated in this study are useful in exploration both on a deposit scale and on the scale of individual ore zones."

The Corbet deposit is one of 17 proximal Cu-Zn massive sulfide deposits located. within the Noranda Cauldron which occurs within the core of the Noranda Volcanic Complex. The deposit is located at the top of the Havrian Formation, the lowermost formation of the 3000 m thick Mine Sequence; the deposit has Yielded 2.75 M tonnes of ore grading 3% Cu, 0.96% Zn, 2.06 g/t Ag and 1.0 g/t Au. The multi-lens Corbet deposit formed within a 250 m wide crater that occurs within a localized breccia pile. The Corbet breccia pile was constructed by explosive magmatic and hydrovolcanic eruptions localized along the south flank of a larger andesitic shield volcano that formed during the waning stages of Havrian volcanism. The breccia footwall of the deposit allowed unfocused and widespread hydrothermal discharge that resulted in the development of a large area of chlorite and fringing sericite alteration that exceeds, by six times, the size of the sulfide lenses and represents a significant exploration target.

"This paper aims to contribute to the knowledge of the mechanical properties of the shales and greywackes which constitute the flysch-type deposits of the Baixo Alentejo Flysch Group, in the south of Portugal. These formations are flysch-type deposits constituted by sequences of usually thick greywacke beds alternating with thin shale beds, which include sometimes intercalations of conglomerate beds. All the sedimentation of these flysch formations was controlled by tectonics. At the same time, should have occurred along with the first Hercynian deformation phase, a low-grade metamorphic event (chlorite zone), that affected these flysch deposits. This study highlights the influence of anisotropy and heterogeneity of these flysch rocks on their physical and mechanical characteristics. The anisotropy verified in some physical properties and on mechanical properties, due to the foliation makes difficult the sample preparation for the laboratory tests. Besides, it induces a scattering of the properties values measured, as for example, the strength and the deformability. The heterogeneity is related to the main features of these geological formations, which are constituted mostly by thinly stratified greywackes and shale beds, which sometimes may affect the results of the laboratory tests making them less representative. The study is made by using both shales and greywackes that constitute these flysch-type deposits in order to evaluate their geotechnical properties, mainly of the shales. Samples of these two rock materials, are tested accordingly a laboratory testing programme, which includes which included mineralogical analysis (X-ray diffraction), physical tests (bulk density, porosity, and void index) and mechanical tests (uniaxial compression, and deformability tests). INTRODUCTIONOne of the factors that most influence the geomechanical behavior of rocks, as well as rock masses is the anisotropy. The word anisotropy comes from two Greek words ""anisos"" (meaning uneven) and ""tropos"" (meaning direction). A body or material is considered to be anisotropic, where the same property has different values depending in which direction it is measured, therefore, an anisotropic material is one whose magnitude of the properties depends on the direction in which these are studied or measured. Otherwise, it is about an isotropic material. However, the fully isotropic materials are quite rare in nature."

"Abstract - Breccias with angular and rounded clasts of a late-mineralization, ""barren"" hornblende porphyry dike set within a comminuted matrix consisting of rock fragments and quartz, cemented by quartz and K-feldspar of hydrothermal origin is observed in diamond drill cores from the Sar Cheshmeh porphyry copper deposit. Studies of age relationship between vein types, phyllic-altered clasts and the breccia groundmass suggest that the brecciation is a late event. The breccia clasts record evidence of hydrothermal reaction between the clasts and fluids responsible for the brecciation.Formation of bornite, in the breccia clasts of the originally barren hornblende porphyry dike, and in the breccia matrix, along with the scarcity of bornite in the Sar Cheshmeh deposit itself suggest involvement of fluids which are later and of different composition from the fluids responsible for the known mineralization at Sar Cheshmeh. These later fluids may be related to a later plutonic event and suggest the possibility of a later, and concealed deposit."

Shovel bucket blast fragmentation analysis is an alternate way to assess blast performance and its effects on downstream mining processes. A camera is installed on the boom of cable shovels, and the stick of hydraulic shovels. Images are captured automatically as the shovel digs, and are processed to acquire rock size information. The automatic data acquisition makes this method safe to use with minimal manual labour. It also allows for a large set of sample data to be captured from both the surface and the interior of a bench face. The system has been deployed in several mines to provide an objective assessment of blasting performance. Images are captured from their cable or hydraulic shovels. The images are grouped into sets based on the shovel location and time to match the fragmentation to specific blasts. Blast fragmentation reports are created for each blast after reviewing the results. Measuring blast fragmentation from the shovel bucket proves to be an effective alternative for blast performance assessment with unique advantages. The blast fragmentation information has been valuable to the mines, and the mines have begun adopting it into their operations.

"BILMAT is one of the most powerful algorithms in existence for material balance computation in mineral processing flowsheets. It is based on a hierarchical decomposition coupled with the Lagrange multipliers method widely reported in the literature. Flowrates can be calculated optionally for pulp, solid or water. Assays are adjusted for a variety of subnetworks, such as assays of the solid as well as assays of fractions of the solid called level 4 data (l: pulp, 2:solid and water, 3:assays of solid, 4:assays of classes of solid).BILMAT4 is a new implementation of BIU1AT that operates in a new microcomputer environment and makes the method more accessible than ever. Its main features are a full-screen colour editor allowing graphic flowsheet drawing and data entry with automatic error checking. Mass balance equations are automatically generated by analysis of the graphics and corresponding data, thus relieving users from the error-prone definition of networks. Sensitivity analysis is performed to assess confidence intervals of computed flowrates and adjusted assays.BILMAT4 incorporates an option for gold leaching circuits where the element to be balanced appears in both the solid and liquid phases with negligible effect on the mass flows of solids. Recoveries are computed in all streams. This program is currently released by CANMET as part of the CAMP collection for Computer Aided Mineral Processing. A complete sample run of the program is discussed."

"This paper reports on the development of selective flocculation processes for the direct recovery of KCl values from low-grade Canadian sylvinite and carnallite potash ores.Two reagent suites, consisting of either a non-selective cationic or selective non-ionic flocculant, together with the same selective anionic dispersant, were evaluated. Initial data from component mineral behaviour investigations, reagent adsorption studies and selective flocculation tests on a synthetic potash ore were used in the successful development of processes capable of recovering KCl values without the necessity for desliming to remove water-insolubles.Enhanced multi-stage treatment (involving redispersion and reflocculation) and subsequent floc recovery techniques (including sedimentation, hydrocyclones and froth flotation) were examined, and in all cases the influence of process parameters such as reagent dosages, conditioning times, solids concentration, particle size and other physical design criteria were investigated.The data reported clearly demonstrate the scale-up potential of these processes and possible applications in potash operations."

"Exposure to airborne respirable silica in surface and underground mine operations is known to be the cause of industrial lung diseases. For this reason, silica is a regulated substance and worker exposure must be monitored regularly. Diesel exhaust also contains substances which are potential caricinogens. In an underground setting, diesel particulate may be the main component of what is referred to as respirable combustible dust (ReD). Although diesel particulate or soot is not at present a rigorously regulated substance, new epidemiological data is prompting North American institutes and agencies to regulate diesel soot or RCD exposure. This paper describes a method where by silicaand RCD exposure may be determined using a single personal sample. In this method, an airborne respirable dust sample is obtained and analyzed nondestructively for silica components using an on-filter X-ray diffraction method. Filters are then ashed at 500°C in a muffle furnace over a four-hour period to determine mass loss due to RCD burning. Compared to widespread successful deployment of robotic manipulators for repetitive and hazardous tasks in related industries such as manufacturing, the construction industry has achieved relatively limited benefits from robotics and soft automation. Unlike manufacturing, where robotic solutions benefit from the structured layout of the environment (e.g., factory assembly line), construction robots face unique challenges that arise from the rugged, dynamic, and unstructured environment of the work site, as well as the uncertainty and evolving sequence of occurring on-site events. This challenges any intended construction robots to not only replicate basic human motion, but also be capable of sensing and adapting to environmental changes, and making decisions based on the evolving state of the environment. Building upon recent advancements in robotic mapping, computer vision, and object recognition, the authors propose to introduce autonomous behavior at the basic task level for on-site construction robots to address these challenges in a flexible and extensible manner. This paper reports the outcome of the first phase of this research - a structured methodology for improved design and development of basic task automations - and focuses on algorithms developed for mobile robot navigation and relative pose estimation. The algorithms are implemented on a prototype mobile robotic platform, and evaluated in several experimental scenarios.

"Abstract - We present a new approach for the evaluation of the potential of emerald reserves in gem projects using beryllium (Be) mobility. The distribution of Be in the different phases of hydrothermally altered (albitized) black shale hosting Colombian emerald deposits indicates that Be mobility is associated with the breakdown of Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide phases. The amount of Be that can be mobilized (~0.7 x 10-6 g/g; i.e., 0.7 ppm) may represent up to 18 wt% of the total Be contained in the black shale. A mass balance calculation applied to a well-constrained alteration zone of the Chivor mines, and based on the quantification of Be that can be mobilized under hydrothermal conditions, gives an estimate of the total gem reserves of these mines. Resumé - Une nouvelle approche, basée sur la mobilité du béryllium (Be) pour l’évaluation des réserves d’émeraude dans des projets d’exploitation de gemmes est présentée. "This new tool can be used as a quick guide f or the assessment of the potential economic wealth of any risky capital project. It does provide an unambiguous recommendation of the type ""go or no go"" to the decision-maker simply by comparing two different ratios profit/investment. One ratio determines the minimum value required to at least break even while the other measures a probable value based on the asymptotic theory of statistical extremes.Its application is briefly illustrated by means of an underground gold mine extension project, an oil sands mine project and a polymetallic open pit project.Once a favourable recommendation has been obtained then a detailed ""cash flow after taxes"" analysis can be carried out for the project.IntroductionMany tools are used in financial decision-making such as the payback period, the discounted cash flow, the internal rate of return and the wealth growth rate (Berry , 1971).These tools are useful and meaningful in evaluating normal projects closely related to regular business where the number of assumptions made is usually very small and where the cost of capita! is usually selected as a discount rate or a hurdle value. In situations where a significant number of assumptions have to be made,two problems can emerge, namely:I. the risk involved is underestimated leading to a potential financial disaster; or2. a good opportunity is lost because the approach used in evaluating the project is too conservative.Each assumption has its own degree of uncertainty and it is well known that combining uncertainties together can lead to a total uncertainty of critical proportion. The easiest way to account for risk is to increase the discount rate or the hurdle value, but this approach alone is quite subjective and can easily lead to the problems described above."
