"This paper highlights the results of collaboration between geology, mining and mineral processing teams during the restart of the North American Lithium Project, located near La Corne, Quebec, Canada. This collaboration was central in ensuring a cross discipline harmonization of design parameters and key inputs, all of which allowed for the development of an optimized life of mine plan suited to the particular needs of the operation.INTRODUCTION In July 2016, North American Lithium Inc. (NAL) began the process of restarting operations at the former Quebec Lithium Mine, located in the municipality of La Corne, Quebec, Canada. The North American Lithium Project (the Project) as it is known today, is the latest chapter in the history of this property. In order to provide a robust foundation for the project, multidisciplinary collaboration was instituted between the geology, mining and metallurgy teams. Despite the intrinsic link between these departments, in many instances their work is completed separate from one another; in silos. This collaboration highlighted specific drivers in the mining value chain that could be exploited to ensure that a saleable product could be produced effectively. This paper explores some of the concepts and strategies that were developed during the feasibility study that supported the project restart (excerpts from the study technical report have been used throughout this paper). PROJECT HISTORY In 1942, prospectors identified the presence of numerous spodumene-bearing pegmatite dykes on the Property. This led to additional interest and exploration drilling campaigns. In 1955, Quebec Lithium Corp. (QLC), who had acquired the property, began construction of an underground mine with mill facilities located on the surface. Operations began the following year at a production rate of 1,100 tonnes per day. A historical cross-section view of the underground mine is shown in Figure 1. In 1959, QLC began the construction of an on-site lithium refinery to produce lithium hydroxide. The refinery was finally operational by 1963. Mining and processing operations continued until 1966 when activities were halted due to a labour dispute. The property was sold and a few years later attempts to resume production were unsuccessful. Property ownership changed several times again until being acquired by Cambior in 1987. In the early 1990’s the existing mine and mill facilities were sold and the mine site rehabilitated"

"In March 1988, old Denver flotation cells were removed from Dickenson's Arthur w. White Mill, and a new flotation circuit, consisting of four Prochem rougher cells and a Hydrochem agitated cleaner column, was commissioned. The refractory portion of the gold in the ore is associated with arsenopyrite, therefore the flotation circuit is set up to produce a saleable sulphide concentrate. Tailings from the leach circuit are conditioned prior to being pumped as feed to the flotation circuit. The prototype Hydrochem agitated column has been in operation as a single cleaner stage for rougher concentrate. The effect of flotation circuit changes on gold recovery data, as well as cleaner concentrate production, and development work to achieve the target results, have been investigated. Flowsheet modifications and the resulting circuit performance data, along with test results to date, will be presented.INTRODUCTIONThe mill is capable of treating 1000 stpd of ore averaging approximately 0.30 oz/ton Au. The ore is crushed and ground to 75% - 200 mesh. Gravity concentration, cyanidation, and Merrill - Crowe precipitation yields 84% gold recovery. Detailed descriptions of the comminution, gravity separation, and leaching circuits, as well as background information have been presented elsewhere (Suttill, Van Weert et al). The target cleaner concentrate grade is 1.0 oz/ton Au for custom smelting and refining. Historical gold recovery values of the old circuit was approximately 20% of the gold present in the float feed at the target grade. The recovery value objective set for the new circuit during the planning stages was 50% of the gold present in the flotation feed at 1.0 oz/ton Au in cleaner concentrate."

"The Adams mine, operated by Jones & Laughlin Mining Company, Ltd. and located near Kirkland Lake, Ontario, produces one million tons of iron ore pellets per year. This paper briefly describes the mining and concentrating operation and deals mainly with the operation of the pellet plant. The orebody consists of fine-grained magnetite and some hematite, with alternating layers of chert, and is mined by conventional open-pit methods. After crushing and grinding, the ore is concentrated by magnetic separation and flotation. Agglomeration is accomplished by the grate-kiln pelletizing process. The plant layout and general operation will be discussed in detail."

"The construction of large. high-power electric furnaces has been an important factor in the growth of electric smelting technology . New developments in the design and operation of electric furnaces have been spurred by the escalating cost of electric power and increasingly stringent environmental constraints. Key areasofprogress include the application of high voltage to enhance furnace productivity; the installation of novel furnace cooling elements and robust binding systems to extend furnace life; development of process schemes to reduce power consumption by preheating and prereduction of the charge; and environmental control improvements for handling fine dusty feedstocks, and for furnace sealing.This paper reviews these developments and outlines a systematic approach for their application in the custom design of new or retrofit electric furnace facilities.IntroductionThe use of electric smelting furnaces has continued to progress during the last decade. Electric furnaces offer high throughput capacity and productivity. In addition, they produce minimum environmental impact, as the furnaces can be readily sealed, and only a small quantity of off-gas is generated. Electric furnaces present the most favourable choice of smelting technology where high process temperatures in excess of about l400°C are required.Their application is burdened by the escalating cost of electric power, hence it is important to seek new opportunities through further technological development. "The influence of flux addition on the structure and properties of pellets produced from low silica specularite with peat moss and bentonite as binders was investigated. Specific pellets basicities in the range of 0.4 to 3.2 were obtained by the addition of limestone or a combination of dolomite and limestone as flux. A t basicities < 1.6, the bonding in the pellets was provided by a glassy silicate phase. At basicities =1.6, calcium ferrites were the predominant bonding phase. When dolomite was added as a flux, presence of magnesia-ferrite was noted. The reduction behaviour of pellets at different basicities was found to be influenced by the type of flux and binder. The pellet compression strength and swelling characteristics were improved with increased basicity.IntroductionThe properties of iron ore pellets are influenced by the type and nature of the ore or concentrate, additives and their subsequent treatment to produce pellets. The interaction between various constituents of the concentrate and additives, i.e. iron oxides, gangue and fluxes etc. result in the formation of various mineralogical phases which affect the degree and nature of bonding achieved in the pellet and the structure and distribution of pores. The pellet properties such as pellet strength and reducibility are influenced by the extent and type of bonding achieved between the ore particles. In view of the present emphasis on the production of high quality pellets to meet progressively stringent quality control requirements, it is essential to investigate the effect of additives on the bonding mechanism and properties of the pellets.In the past, the effects of additives on the bonding mechanism of pellets have been investigated. It is important to note that the conditions and parameters to be controlled are typical of a given concentrate/ore. In this paper, the results of the investigation on characterization of fluxed pellets produced from a low silica specularite concentrate are reported.This investigation was also aimed at assessing the suitability of peat moss for use as a binder for the production of low silica fluxed pellets. Peat moss is abundantly available in the vicinity of iron ore mines in Quebec and encouraging results have been obtained du ring the production of high silica acid and fluxed pellets."

"A submersible sensor for real-time gas holdup measurement in the collection zone of industrial flotation machines is introduced. The working principle is based on the generation and measurement of a pulp flow using a gas-exclusion cell immersed in the aerated slurry. The gas exclusion cell consists of a variable-area open vertical tube designed to be filled only with pulp by preventing gas bubbles entrance. The higher density of the fluid column within the cell generates a downward flow of pulp; the rate of this flow is proportional to the gas holdup outside the cell. The gas holdup measurement is achieved by tracking the velocity of the pulp flow leaving the gas-exclusion cell, using a magnetic flowmeter. Construction details of a prototype and its testing in two- and three-phases are discussed.INTRODUCTIONFlotation process optimization consists of finding and maintaining operating conditions that maximize flotation performance measured in terms of recovery and grade. The selective separation of mineral particles proceeds in two interactive zones where different and simultaneous phenomena take place: in the collection zone, the valuable particles are separated by collection on the surface of bubbles, while in the froth zone, the bubble-particle aggregates are gathered, drained to remove entrained particles, and taken into the concentrate stream. The cell overall performance, which can be determined from proper stream sampling, is a function of the recoveries in the individual zones. These zone recoveries cannot be independently measured nor calculated from operating variables. Progress in the assessment of these recoveries has been slow because on-line and reliable sensors to measure properties of the drastically different dispersions existing in both zones are not available.In the case of the collection zone, it has been demonstrated that the recovery of hydrophobic particles on the surface of bubbles, considered as a process with first-order kinetics, correlates with the bubble surface area flux (Finch et al., 2000; Hernandez, et al., 2003; Lopez-Saucedo et al., 2012). Bubble surface area flux (bubble area generated per unit time and cell cross-sectional area), is a variable affected by gas flow rate, bubble size distribution, and frother type and concentration. Gas holdup (volumetric fraction of gas dispersed in the slurry) is also affected by the same variables, and as such, carries information on the interacting variables that define the performance of the process. Therefore, a correlation between gas holdup and bubble surface area flux was expected and demonstrated (Finch et al, 2000), and since gas holdup is easier to measure as no bubble size is required, it has the potential to be the basis of a cell control and optimization strategy if a continuous sensor is available."

We present an integrated analysis of laboratory-based thermally induced fracturing and results of numerical models to give insight to the role of thermal shock fracture on geothermal reservoir rocks. Thermal stimulation is a reservoir permeability enhancement technique applied to commercial geothermal reservoir rocks to enhance fluid injection capabilities for spent power plant working fluids. The process is well known to enhance permeability but the thermodynamic and physical constraints of the process are less certain. In an attempt to constrain the interaction and the ideal conditions that lead to permeability enhancement, experimental procedures were carried out to mimic the conditions that a reservoir rock would experience during a thermal stimulation using temperature differentials ranging from 50-300°C. Samples underwent such thermal gradients under controlled laboratory conditions and were characterized for the changes to permeability, porosity, ultrasonic velocities, dynamic elastic moduli and petrological changes. The thermal stimulation was simulated in a FLAC2D thermal numerical model to investigate the nature of the thermally induced changes in the sample. The development of this model also allows us to investigate the relationship between geological characteristics and the ability to thermally stimulate any type of rock. The results indicate that numerical thermal shocking experiments are corroborated by laboratory-based results. The implication of this study is that the refined numerical models present an insight to the conditions and constraints under which thermal stimulation can prove to enhance permeability that could not be gained through purely laboratory-based studies.

"Hundreds of diamonds have been found in the United States. The majority of the discoveries occurred during the 19th century as a by-product of placer gold mining. Most of these early diamond finds have no known source, and in many cases are situated in areas unfavorable for diamond exploration based on current models that require kimberlite or lamproite to be emplaced in a stable Archean craton or Proterozoic craton margin.Diamonds have also been recovered in situ from lamproite at Murfreesburo, Arkansas, from kimberlite in the Lake Ellen region of Michigan, and in several kimberlites in the Colorado–Wyoming State Line district. Unverifed reports also suggest that diamonds may have been recovered from other related intrusions at a number of localities in the United States.IntroductionTo date, diamonds have been recovered in situ from kimberlite in the Colorado–Wyoming State Line district and from a kimberlite in Michigan. Additionally, diamonds have been recovered from lamproites in Arkansas. Diamonds have also been reported from kimberlite in Kansas, and from peridotite in New York and Maryland. However, these latter reports have not been verified."

During the last few years, low cement castable refractories found more application in industry, because of good low and high temperature mechanical properties.In the case of alumina based castables ,usually fume silica or reactive alumina are used as superfines in the matrix to form mullite at high temperature which depends to source of alumina . Mullite network formation improves the hot mechanical properties and thermal shock resistance of bodies. The mullitisation of andalusite (so called primary mullite) also produces a certain amount of rich silica glass, part of it being expelled out of the grain. This phenomenon restrict the application of andalusite low cement castable in pig iron ladle. In this research, firstly 8 pig iron ladles from ESC(esfahan Steel company) with different conditions selected and monitored during usage to determine of main factors affecting on corrosion of refractories. Results showed that tap to tap time and undischarged pig iron are the main ones.Therefore monolithic refractories such as castables which increase thermal shock resistance could be substituted. Regarding to ternary phase diagram of Al2O3-SiO2-CaO ,fumed silica was selected as fine particle.After optimization of particle size distribution by using of modified andreasen equation and rehological properties ,different mixture were composed with andalusite ,fume silica, reactive alumina,secar 71 ,SiC and kyanite.All aggregates system components were mixed dry for 1 min in hobart mixer .After water addition wet mixing was continued until getting flowing about 4 min.The ready mixes were poured in the moulds of of 25mm X 25mm X 140mm with vibrations .After demoulding the samples were cured for 24 hrs and dried at 110OC/18hrsand then fired at 1100-1500OC. Physical ,mechanical ,phase analysis(XRD) and microstructure studies (SEM)were carried out according to ASTM standards. Results showed that by addition of kyanite ,more mullite phase formed through the matrix but,because of expansion occured during this phase transformoration, some cracks formed and mechanical properties decreased.By SiC addition the silica film on the surface of SiC lead to improvement of mechanical properties at high temperature

In this study, wettability between sprayable tundish lining (MgO) and molten steel was investigated by using sessile drop method. Content of glass fiber (SiO2) in the MgO varied between 0 to 8 wt% whereas mean particle sizes of the MgO were 25, 75, 150 and 300µm. Experimental results revealed that contact angle (0) of sessile drop on the MgO was not altered by the addition of glass fiber up to 1 wt.% whereas above 2 wt.% addition decreased the 0 considerably. Contact angle, 0, increased considerably with increasing MgO particle size. SEM analysis showed deposition of glass phase was present at the interface as the finer MgO particles were used.

Abstract -Giant, sediment-hosted lead-zinc deposits in northern Australia formed during development of Mid-Proterozoic extensional basins that overlie Lower Proterozoic basement. The basement in the Mount Isa area, exposed by folding and faulting, contains fractionated, high-heat-producing granites. These granites generate heat at a rate of about 6 ?Wm-3, probably sufficient to form giant lead-zinc deposits either by (a) driving episodic convection of saline basement and basin fluids for periods of 105 to 106 years at temperatures of about 230°C, or (b) heating basin fluids moving under the influence of topographic relief or fault movement. The presence or absence of such granites may form a vital component of the genetic model. Ore-forming fluid flow was probably initiated by continent-scale, extensional basin fracturing.

GOLD was discovered previous to the year 1900 on the east shore of Emerald lake, Afton township, Timagami Forest Reserve. It was found in a small cavern in banded iron formation, close to the water&apos;s edge. This occurrence of gold was mentioned in several reports that referred briefly to this area, and prospectors evinced considerable interest in the region. It was not, however, until the Golden Rose Mining Company, which was incorporated in 1909, started operations that much work was done on the property. In 1915-16, this Company, under the direction of E. J. Townsend, the President, did a considerable amount of work. A small mill was built and ore was extracted from pits, trenches, and a one~ hundred-foot shaft. In 1927, Afton Mines, Limited, was incorporated to take over the property, and about thirty men were employed for a time. During 1934, the New Golden Rose Mining Company was organized to handle the property, and the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, undertook to develop the mine. In March of the following year, this Company began deepening the shaft from 100 feet to 500 feet. A considerable amount of drilling had previously been done on the hill of iron formation in which the mine is located. Further drilling was done from the surface, and altogether about twelve holes have been put down to test the formations. Over 2,000 feet of drilling has also been done from the underground workings. The mine is now known officially as the New Golden Rose mine, although to many it is better known as the Afton. To reach the property during the summer months, there is a boat trip of about thirty miles from Timagami, a wagon-road portage of one mile to Obabika lake, a boat trip of ten miles on this lake, and finally a wagon-road portage of one and one-quarter miles to Emerald lake. The mine lies about three-quarters of a mile down the east shore of the lake. A 75 h.p. Diesel engine and compressor were taken in over this&apos; route last summer, and it is evident that the transportation problem is quite a serious one. Airplanes have been much in use, and a winter road runs from the mine to Chudleigh, on the .Canadian National railway near Sudbury.

Over 90% of the Romania&apos;s lignite reserve is located in the region of Oltenia, which is why this area is given special attention in the country&apos;s coal resources. Because the lignite deposit of Oltenia is comprised of 1-8 exploitable coal layers, their capitalizing calls for urgent arrangements to ensure rational exploitation under conditions of total safety, minimum losses and efficiency. The technology used the coal pits of North-Western Oltenia is the technology of excavation, transport and dumping in a continuous flow by using the complexes of excavation, transport and high-capacity dumping. The theme of this paper is of particular importance because the rhythmic operation in complete safety, is necessary both for sizing and keeping within the bounds of acceptable values, throughout the process of excavation of the geometric elements of the coal faces, marked by: the height of benches, slope angle and width of berms. Geometric dimensions of the benches of the open pits, the height of benches, slope angle and width of berms shall be calculated and shall be based on: the massif structure that forms the benches; physical-mechanical characteristics of rocks from the bench; working conditions, characterized mainly by mining and extraction methods applied; functional parameters of the mechanical equipment used to perform various operations on the coal face etc. For this study it was necessary a broad field for task tracking, measurement, research and design elements of the coal face, for land survey and a desk activity by: processing of topographic data, laboratory analyses on physical and mechanical properties of rocks and numerous specialized studies. In the final part, we bring some contributions to elucidating the issues of special importance for the lignite coal pits of Oltenia, coming up with data, graphics, formulas, solutions and concrete dimensioning of coal faces in terms of using technology in a continuous flow.

"In order to determine the in-situ shear strength of rock joints, large scale testing is required. However, this is both expensive and difficult to execute. One possible method to overcome this may be to use photogrammetry to capture large joint surface roughness in-situ and downscale it to replica samples, which could be sheared in laboratory. In this paper, as a first part in such a method, a technique to digitize surface roughness and to produce replica samples for laboratory shear testing from a larger joint sample are presented. First, a thin granitic rock slice with dimensions of 1.75 m x 0.95 m of granitic intact rock was chosen for the study. The joint surface is fresh and created through tensile induced splitting. The large joint sample is digitized using photogrammetry. Then, one fullscale 1.7 m x 0.6 m geometry is cropped from the digitized joint geometry and then subsamples at 10x, 7.5x, 5x, 2.5x and 1x scales. All sub-geometries are scaled down digitally to produce 0.17 m by 0.06 m geometries. The geometries are used to make casting molds both positive and negative to produce samples with perfect matedness. The casting molds are 3D printed in polylactic acid plastic and C60/75 concrete is cast to produce a replica series. In addition to the creation of this replica series, two pilot replicas are also tested using a portable shear box with a 0.5 MPa normal pressure. The results from the pilot rounds are presented and discussed. Finally, suggestions for future research are given.INTRODUCTIONThe rock mass strength is in many cases controlled by the shear strength of rock joints, especially in hard rock masses. The shear strength is generally found to be influenced by several parameters, including normal stress, the basic friction angle of the intact rock, the joint surface roughness, the joint wall compressive strength, the matedness of the joint surfaces, weathering and infilling. The effect of these parameters for the joint shear strength can be evaluated in laboratory scale. However, the shear strength is known to be scale dependent. How the scale effect influences the strength is not fully understood. The general consensus is that the shear strength decreases when sample size increases, i.e. a negative scale effect (Bandis et al. 1981). However, some studies have presented contradictory results, see for example Hencher et al. (1993) and Kutter & Otto (1990). The extent and nature of the scale effect is still a question of debate (Tatone & Grasselli 2013)."

In recent years, high performance thermoplastic composites such as PEEK and PEKK have been developed for aerospace applications. These materials offer, among the other properties, high toughness and damage tolerances. These are semi-crystalline materials and their processing can lead to different crystallinity that in turn have some impact on the final properties. The effect of cooling rate on degree of crystallinity of PEEK is studied to identify the processing window for manufacturing. Samples were heated at the constant heating rate of 20°C/min up to 375°C (above melting point) and held for 10 minute. The enthalpy of the crystallization was measured at different constant cooling rates of 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 40°C/min. After cooling, the samples were heated at constant heating rate of 2°C/min using modulated DSC. At temperature between 90°C to 375°C, two endotherm peaks were observed. Results suggest that endotherm peaks are related to a melting and recrystallization phenomenon of one crystal morphology. However, the second endotherm peak could be associated with another crystal structure or morphology.

The successful advent of solvent extraction (SX) reagents for copper recovery and improvements in electrowinning of copper to produce LME grade A copper cathode have paved the way for the hydrometallurgical treatment of copper oxide and low grade sulfide ores. This has resulted in about 25-30% of the world&apos;s copper being produced today by the Leach-SX-EW process. The obvious next step was to develop processes for the hydrometallurgical treatment of copper sulfide concentrates, as an alternative to a typical smelter-refinery complex. The current paper updates the processes that have been developed to date with emphasis on processes that are being commercialized or that are seriously under consideration for commercialization. Most of the discussions relate to the hydrometallurgy of chalcopyrite concentrates, which account for about 70% of the world&apos;s known copper reserves. In summary, in the last thirty years, the hydrometallurgical treatment of copper sulfide concentrates has attained full maturity and will be a serious option to contend with while evaluating any future new copper plant.

This paper provides an overview and discussion of key aspects of operating risk valuation in underground metal mining systems, with impact on project economics, using stochastic computer modelling in Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis. Mine operating risk classification and assessment for ground, equipment and scheduling aspects are presented with an overview of available risk valuation tools that have been developed in engineering disciplines. The classification is organized by keeping in perspective the mine design needs and constraints, as well as the potential economic impact that operating problems can have on an underground development and production system. These sources of cost, revenue and time delays are tabulated to enable the hierarchization of potentially hazardous unplanned events occurring during the mining project life cycle. In complex technological systems, like the underground mining systems, the decision-making process involve a wide range of uncertainties, and often this is based on subjective and qualitative expert evaluations. Whether a qualitative or quantitative analysis is conducted, it is often the case that the probability of a certain project parameter value needs to be estimated. This requires use of methods and techniques to handle subjective, qualitative measures and to combine them with quantitative stochastic modelling in order to evaluate mine operations-related issues on DCF economic performance measure parameters. Links are established between decision making and the risk-based mine planning process for evaluation of design alternatives, with emphasis on the need of introducing flexibility in mine design. Finally, challenges of risk-based mine planning and design implementations are discussed and the call for an integrated risk-based real options systems valuation (ROV) ?in? projects analysis is made.
