"Environmental problems encountered with the use of diesel equipment in underground mining operations are discussed. The concept and procedure o implementing the Health Effects Index equation as a means of quantitatively assessing an underground working environment is outlined and sample calculations are present ed. Advantages and disadvantages of utilizing this method are also discussed.IntroductionWith the introduction of diesel-powered mining equipment in the 1960s there arose several question s for the environmental engineer to consider. These included: 1. What are the constituents of diesel exhaust and how can they be detected and evaluated?2. What are the toxicities and long-term health effects of these constituents?3. What is the ventilating volume required to maintain the concentration of these constituents below toxic levels?Diesel engines are a class of reciprocating, internal combustion engines in which relatively high compression ratios are used to generate high air-charge temperatures, which cause ignition of fuel to occur spontaneously. Ideally, perfect combustion of the fuel would produce an exhaust consisting solely of nitrogen (N2), water (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2). However, because no combustion process is perfect, relatively small quantities of imperfect-combustion products, or pollutants, are also generated. These include hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon (C) or soot, and sulphur dioxide (SO2).Currently, the Regulations for Mines and Mining Plants, made under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Section 176), stipulate that weekly tests shall be made to determine the carbon monoxide (CO) concentration in the undiluted exhaust and at the operator's position, and the nitrogent dioxide (NO2) concentration at the operator's position. Also, the aldehyde (as HCHO) concentration in the atmosphere, at the operator's position, is to be measured at least every three months. Threshold limit values (TLVs) have been established for each of the three combustion products, and each is regarded as a separate entity. Consequently, this does not allow for consideration of interactions and possible synergistic effects between the various exhaust components."

Au/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation and tested for the room temperature photocatalytic reforming of methanol in aqueous solution. These catalysts proved to be more active, on a molar basis, than Pd/TiO2. The dependence on loading of gold was different from that of palladium, showing a double maximum in yield at 0.1 and 2 wt. % with low rate below 0.01% and above 10%. A model is proposed for the reaction involving band gap excitation of titania electrons which are used to oxidise the methanol via adsorbed CO. With palladium, photoreforming of CO and water can be achieved, but this is much less effective on gold, presumably due to the much weaker bonding of CO on Au.

"Uncertainty is an important feature of many investments, but it is especially important for mineral properties. Mine properties often entail large investments and fixed commitments. Managers in the mining industry often view price uncertainty as undesirable, due to the possibility that the price of the mined commodity will fall to a level that prevents the firm from recovering its investment and fixed costs. This paper identifies pitfalls in conventional valuation methods and outlines a new approach to valuation based on option pricing theory and dynamic programming. In the process, it identifies generic strategies for organizing mine production in ways that allow the owner to benefit from the uncertainty in mineral prices. IntroductionRisk is pervasive in the mining industry. The operation and maintenance of a mine may involve high, and unavoidable, fixed costs. A mine owner can only begin to recover these fixed costs if the price of the mined commodity is greater than the incremental cost of production. But the prices of many minerals are extremely volatile. The price volatility of copper has been significantly higher than the price volatility of a typical stock, for example. A mine owner cannot be sure that the price of the mineral product will remain high long enough for the firm to recover its capital and fixed costs.Mine owners are able to minimize their losses during periods when the output price is below the incremental cost of production by temporarily closing operations. During these periods they incur only fixed costs. While shut-downs help minimize losses, the y do not help the firm recover its initial investment. If output prices remain low long enough, the fixed costs and original investment may never be recovered. High fixed costs, therefore, lead to substantial downside risk."

"Belleterre Quebec Mines, Limited, is a subsidiary of Mcintyre Porcupine Mines, Limited. The property is in Guillet township, Quebec, 45 miles due east of Haileybury, Ontario. It is accessible by 72 miles of gravelled road from New Liskeard, Ontario (Fig. 1).Gold production at the property commenced in 1936 and to March 31st, 1945, had exceeded $9,000,000. For the past 3 years the milling rate has averaged 325 tons a day and the gold recovery about $14 a ton.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe rocks of the district consist of Keewatin-like volcanics conformably overlain by Timiskaming-like sediments. Together they form the remnant of an easterly plunging anticline engulfed by granite (Fig. 2). The pregranite intrusives consist of diorite, gabbro, and ultrabasic rocks, occurring as dykes, sills, and irregular stocks. Dykes of porphyry and lamprophyre presumably related to the batholithic intrusive are common in this area. The veins of quartz are also probably derived from the batholithic intrusives. A few dykes of Keweenawan-type diabase have been observed."

The particle breakage kinetics, product size and size distribution, as well as grinding limit for quartz suspensions in a horizontal stirred mill are investigated. Results of grinding studies on quartz suspensions in a horizontal stirred mill confirm "first-order" particle breakage rates. A comparison of equation fits reveal that the product size distribution from stirred mill is best represented by the Rosin-Rammler equation when compared to the Gaudin-Shuhmann equation, but results fit poorly as particle size below five microns. A method of determining breakage rates versus particle size is demonstrated which shows that the 10% top size fraction is most appropriate for the determination of specific breakage rates. The method is used to demonstrate the relationship between particle breakage rate and particle size. As the feed particle size becomes smaller, the size reduction ratio decreases and approaches a grinding limit which depends on the effective stresses created in the mill.

Data are presented on the extractant behaviour on toxic metal removal from spent hydroprocessing catalyst, produced at the North Atlantic Refinery plant in Newfoundland and Labrador. Aliquat 336 was selected due to its potential capabilities for the separation of cobalt, molybdenum and nickel from the leachate extractant produced by aqua regia. The solvent extraction process was statistically modeled using central composite design (CCD), and the numerical optimization was conducted to achieve the optimum point for toxic metal recovery for the extractant.

"The Highvale Mine in Alberta is owned by TransAlta Utilities Corpora/ion and operated by Mana/fa Coal Lid. It is the largest coal mine in Canada and in 1982 supplied 8.6 million 1onnes of sub-bituminous ""B"" coal to TransAlta's Sundance Ceneraling Plan/. Annual produclion is scheduled to increase in 1983 when the firs/ unit of the new Keephil/s Generating Plant comes on stream and is expec/ed to exceed 11 million tonnes by 1985 when the second unit is commissioned. Coal is mined from several pits in a multi-seam operation. Comprehensive maintenance, drainage and environmental programs form a major part of the operation.IntroductionThe Highvale Mine is located eighty kilometres west of Edmonton, Alberta on the south shore of Lake Wabamun (Fig. I). The mine is owned by TransAlta Utilities Corporation (T.A.U.) and is operated by Manalta Coal Ltd. In 1982, 8.6 million tonnes of coal were supplied to T.A.U.'s 2100 MW Sundance Generating Plant, making it the largest producing coal mine in Canada. By 1985, with two 375 MW units on line at T.A. U .'s new Keephills Generating Plant, annual production is estimated to exceed eleven million tonnes. The generating plants accept crushed unwashed coal from the mine via the coal handling plant system conveyor belts. The coal is classified as sub-bituminous ""B"" and has an average heating capacity of 18.6 MJ I kg.HistoryPrior to 1943 only small scale mining took place in the Highvale area. Between 1943 and 1961 two strip mining companies, Mount Royal Collieries and Continental Collieries operated on the present mine site. Both operations excavated coal along the south shore of Lake Wabamun."

Today?s large electric mining shovels are significant users of power and represent peak loads of more than 3.5 MW to a mine?s distribution system. The power swings during normal operation can influence the line voltage at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). The static converters for the shovel?s motions also create voltage and current harmonics which are fed back into the mine?s power grid. In addition, shovels themselves are affected by the power quality of the mine?s distribution system. This paper introduces the use of active IGBT rectifiers, also called Active Front Ends (AFE), as alternative to conventional, line commutated SCR thyristor rectifiers. The AFEs convert the AC line input into a controlled DC-link voltage. This DC voltage is then used as input to IGBT inverters, which power the AC motors of the shovel?s Hoist, Propel, Crowd, and Swing motions. The introduction of AFEs creates the following operational improvements: i) reduction of the Harmonic Current Distortion THDi from more than 40% to less than 4%; ii) full regenerative operation; iii) the potential for line voltage stabilization at the PCC; iv) high tolerance for line voltage fluctuations; v) improved dynamic performance, and, as result vi) higher availability and productivity of the shovel.

"The through-put and energy efficiency of an autogenous (AG) grinding mill are adversely affected by variability in rock size and rock competency. This applies to both fully autogenous and semi-autogenous (SAG) grinding circuits. In this paper we focus on an approach to overcome the problem of inconsistent mill through-put related to variability in mill feed size and rock competency. The focus is on ores containing hard, competent rock. This approach consists of preparing feed to an autogenous mill that contains 20% coarse media rock and 80% of material crushed to pass 37 mm. Results of pilot-scale testing for two iron-ores will be presented to show that a 10% to 12% reduction in unit energy consumption is possible with prepared feed, compared with feeding the mill with conventional primary crusher discharge.INTRODUCTIONIn the past 30 years or so, autogenous grinding and semi-autogenous grinding have been the comminution technologies of choice for most mining and mineral processing operations. These technologies saved both capital and operating expenses associated with the installation and operation of multi-stage crushing and screening plants required for conventional rod mill – ball mill circuits. However, SAG and AG are inherently inefficient in terms of energy consumption, especially for very hard ores. In cases of hard ore, changing characteristics of rock fed to the mills causes wide fluctuations in mill capacity, which contributes to the inefficiency. Rising electric power costs make this the most expensive unit operation used in the extraction of valuable minerals from an ore. The objective of the concept discussed here is to reduce the energy consumption in AG grinding for hard ore and eliminate the use of large-diameter steel grinding balls that are required for SAG grinding"

"Based on plant mineralogical data & circuit modelling, a pilot plant campaign was conducted at Strathcona Mill to identify options for improving the performance and operating flexibility of the copper-nickel separation circuits. Emphasis was given to options for combined treatment of the two feed streams (primary nickel ore rougher concentrate and copper ore circuit concentrate) to obtain more flexibility in the use of existing column flotation capacities. The pilot test results demonstrated that circuits which incorporated preconcentration prior to column flotation gave the best metallurgical results. Maximum column carrying rates were also related to the preconcentration. Predictions that increased circulating loads from the column scavengers would improve copper-nickel separation performance were confirmed.IntroductionThe copper-nickel separation circuits at Falconbridge's Strathcona Mill produce a high grade (>30% Cu) copper concentrate most of which is treated at the Falconbridge Kidd Creek smelter near Timmins. The remaining nickel concentrate which still contains approximately 20% of the feed copper is combined with other lower grade nickel/copper concentrates and shipped to the Falconbridge nickel smelter. The separation is required because of the limited capacity for copper processing in and downstream from the nickel smelter. Since no nickel is recovered at present in the Kidd smelter, the challenge is to minimize the nickel content of the copper concentrate.At present there are two independent separation circuits treating the rougher concentrates from the copper and nickel circuits as shown in Figure I. The minerals treated are mainly chalcopyrite and pentlandite but there is up to 25% of the copper present as cubanite in the copper ore. The circuits were kept separate because the flotation rates and froth characteristics were very different, probably because of the presence of cubanite and the large difference in the concentrate grades feeding the circuits."

"In spite of the applications of DEM models to emulate the elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio and strengths of isotropic rock in laboratory scale, extensions to anisotropic rock and larger engineering scale still have many challenges to overcome such as robust verification and validation against observed field case. In this study, a discrete element modeling was performed in order to represent a transversely isotropic rock such as shale, and the upscaled model was applied to foundation and borehole problems using PFC2D. The applicability of the upscaled rock mass model was verified by an analytical solution. The DEM modeling of stress redistribution induced by an applied surface line load compares well with Boussinesq’s isotropic solution and anisotropic solution given by Bray. The borehole model with a circular opening under biaxial stress was compared with both isotropic and anisotropic solutions resulting in good agreement. The abilities of DEM model to investigate the micromechanisms accounting for complex macroscopic behaviors and to predict the macroscopic behavior are discussed.The results demonstrate that DEM modeling has the potential to be applied to anisotropic rock mechanics problems on larger engineering scales such as wellbore stability problems especially in shale formations. Furthermore, the effect of anisotropy modeled through this study may be able to explain failure behavior of anisotropic rock encountered frequently in real cases.INTRODUCTIONAnisotropy is prevalent in various types of rocks, especially in shale that contain a set of parallel bedding planes. These weak planes in various forms are sources of large deformation and low shear strength and contribute significantly to the anisotropic behavior of rocks (Amadei, 1996; Cho et al., 2012; Kim et al., 2012). As elastic and strength behavior of anisotropic rock is substantially different from that of isotropic rock, proper consideration of anisotropy is of great importance. There is extensive of experimental evidence showing the anisotropy of shale. Niandou et al. (Niandou et al., 1997) analyzed the plastic deformation and failure mechanisms of Tournemire shale were highly dependent on the orientation of bedding planes. Cho et al. (Cho et al., 2012) presented various deformations and strengths of Boryeong shale obtained from laboratory experiments. Fjaer and Nes (Fjaer and Nes, 2013) performed uniaxial and triaxial compressive strength tests using Mancos shale, and they observed that the shear sliding along the planes of weakness before the occurrence of a major failure can reduce the strength of anisotropic rock. The recent research has demonstrated that the anisotropy of rock is an important consideration in rock engineering."

"Laboratory and miniplant testwork was carried out to reject uranium from an Iron Oxide Copper Gold (IOCG) deposit that contains an average of 60-70 ppm uranium with high variability. The dominate copper bearing mineral is chalcopyrite with minor bornite and trace covellite. The main gangue minerals are iron-rich chlorite, quartz and magnetite. The main uranium-containing mineral is uraninite (UO2). Downstream processes require the maximum uranium level of no more than 80 ppm in final copper concentrate.Mineralogical examination reveals that uraninite particles are finely disseminated with grain size of less than a few microns in the deposit requiring fine regrind in order to liberate uraninite from chalcopyrite particles. A lab flowsheet was developed to include ultrafine regrind of the rougher concentrate to the particle size of 80% passing 11-13 µm with up to four stages of recleaning in flotation columns. Finer regrind to 80% passing 5-6 µm may continue to improve liberation but does not decrease uranium level in the final concentrate. In each of the successive recleaning stages by flotation column after fine regrind, uraninite is rejected into the column tailings, with the final copper gold concentrate containing less than 70 ppm uranium from a feed containing 83 ppm uranium. The conceptual flowsheet was further tested in an integrated, continuous miniplant showing average 94% copper recovery with average 74 ppm uranium. The uraninite particles that report to the final concentrate are either locked with chalcopyrite or entrained as liberated particles of less than 5 µm in size."

The current study provides an experimental approach that aims at documenting the effects of different phases of CO2 (gas, liquid, supercritical fluid) on rock seismic responses. This has implications on obtaining quantitative estimates of fluid saturations for geological storage. The ultrasonic pulse transmission technique is the underlying methodology used in this work. Unlike previous rock physics studies involving CO2 as pore fluid, care is taken to fully saturate the studied samples and also to separate pore fluid effects from pore pressure build-up effects during the experiments. This allows to record seismic effects that are solely reflective of changes in the pore fluid properties. Measurements were done on a CO2 saturated Berea sandstone. Laboratory results show P- and S- waveform variations (velocity, amplitude) in response to CO2's varying phase state. Overall, CO2 phase changes (gas to liquid and gas to supercritical fluid) are marked by a drop in velocities, with the drop being smaller and less immediate over the gas-supercritical fluid transition than over the gas-liquid transition.

The changes to The Mining Tax Act proposed in the budget are mean t 10 simplify the current system without any loss of revenue to the government. It goes without saying that some operators will benefit from the changes while others will pay more taxes after 1985.With regard to ongoing matters at the federal level, the proposed carve-out legislation and the issue of northern allowances are being discussed with government officials, and a small victory has recently been scored with regard 10 the laxation of certain share transactions of prospectors and grubstakers. A report on these issues is provided herein.Ontario BudgetOn October 24, 1985, Ontario Finance Minister Robert F. Nixon tabled a budget proposing several significant changes to both the Ontario Mining Tax Act and the province’s income tax legislation.Mining Tax ActA flat rate of tax and reduced processing allowances highlight proposed changes to The Mining Tax Act. The proposed changes, with a comparison to the existing system, are set out in Table I.The most significant change is the replacement of the graduated tax rate schedule with a flat 20010 tax rate. This is a welcome change for most mine operators who viewed the high rate of 30% on profit over $20 million as counter-productive.However, the flat rate of ta x may not be welcome to all operators. Generally speaking, operators with less than $ 10 million annual profit are better off under the graduated rate system, while operators with annual profit exceeding $10 million will benefit from the 20010 tax rate."

"A series of flotation tests was carried out on Brunswick Mining ore with various pH modifiers (soda ash, lime, KOH) and added ions (ferric, nitrate, sulphate) in the copper lead rougher circuit. The main objective was to identify downstream effects on sphalerite activation and subsequent zinc rougher flotation. Some significant differences in zinc flotation were obtained. Most notably, soda ash and nitrate ions had a positive impact and ferric ions a pronounced negative effect on selectivity.Selected products from the flotation tests were deslimed at 400 mesh, washed with methanol, air dried, placed in teflon vials purged with nitrogen and stored at -15 degrees C. Numerous liberated sphalerite and pyrite particles were selected under a stereoscope and placed in rows on indium foil. The surface compositions of the particles were analyzed with an innovative laser probe (LIMS). The very small analysis area of the LIMS enables the surfaces of individual grains to be characterized. In addition, the rapid analysis time allows a statistically significant number of grains to be analyzed quickly.Surface lead appears to play a major role in zinc activation/flotation. Possible mechanisms are proposed to explain the variations in metallurgical performance at the different test conditions.IntroductionAlthough the bulk composition of mineral grains is an important consideration for the mineral processor it is ultimately surface composition and topography (edges and dislocations preferred sites for reactions) that control reactivity in flotation and cyanidation (passivation, encapsulation and preg-robbing). "Rare earth elements (REEs) have a series of specific properties making them invaluable in products including lighting, electronics and magnetism. The elements have been used in many commercial products, for example, turbines, electric vehicles, batteries, lighting, computers, cell phones and lasers. Heavy REEs are attracting the interests of scientists from many countries, and these elements have become critical to develop high-tech materials. Ion-adsorbed rare earth deposits were first discovered in China. The minerals are also called weathered crust elution-deposited rare earths. The particular types of deposits are distributed throughout southern China. The ion-adsorbed deposits are rich in medium and heavy REEs, accounting for more than 80% of the world’s total medium and heavy REEs production. However, the separation of heavy REEs from ion-adsorbed deposit is difficult owing to their similar chemical properties. The conventional separating technologies have caused serious pollution. A novel extraction strategy has been developed in this laboratory and is presented herein.INTRODUCTIONThe unique properties of rare earth elements (REEs) render them important in high-strength magnets, lighting phosphors, polishing compounds, and ceramics. Especially for applications that take advantage of the f-orbital electrons, substitutions outside the REE family are often difficult to impossible (Nassar, Du, & Graedel, 2015). Extracting and separating individual elements from mined ore is not easy, requiring lengthy operations to separate them, and this results in high costs and adverse effects on the environment. The low concentration of REE in the earth’s crust makes economic exploitation difficult (de Boer & Lammertsma, 2013) and the sustainability of the REEs separation industry has aroused considerable attention (McLellan, Corder, Golev, & Ali, 2014). To eliminate protons and break the dimmers in organic phosphonic acids or carboxylic acids, the saponification of acidic extractants by acid-base neutralization reactions are widely used in industrial REEs separation (Sun, Luo, & Dai, 2012a). The saponification procedure contributes to increased extractability and selectivity of acidic extractants to a considerable extent. The common industrial saponification mechanisms and technological processes are shown in Figure 1 and include ammonium saponification (saponified by NH3·H2O), sodium saponification (saponified by NaOH), calcium saponification (saponified by Ca(OH)2), and magnesium saponification (saponified by MgO). These inevitably result in wastewaters containing NH4 +, Na+, Ca2+ or Mg2+ because of the cation-exchange extraction mechanisms (Xiao, Long, Huang, Feng, Cui, & Wang, 2013; Song, Fu, Wang, Liu, Zhou, & Li, 2014; Sun & Waters, 2014)."

"Brogan coal containing mean averages of 6,93% w/w total sulphur (1.1% sulphate sulphur, 1.6% organic sulphur and 4.24% pyritic sulphur) and 16.34% mineral ash was used as the test coal in these studies.Shake-culture leaching studies on seven size fractions of the coal, ranging in size from 0.045 mm to 1.7 mm, showed that the rate of pyrite leaching was inversely proportional to the particle size. As the use of continuous stirred tank reactors would be uneconomical for the reclamation of waste coal, column leaching studies were initiated on coal sieved to >6.35 mm to < 12.7 mm, The leachate was monitored for all metal ions and the release of iron was used to monitor the rate of pyrite oxidation . Measurable amounts of Zn, Co, Ni, Mn, and V, all of which can replace iron in the pyrite crystal structure, were released during the initial stages of leaching. Further, high concentrations of AI, Ca and Sr and trace amounts of Sn, As. Se, B, Ca, Cr, Si, and Ti were detected in the column effluents.These studies suggest that bacterial leaching will remove the pyrite and qualitative amounts of environmentally undesirable trace metals from the coal if such a process is developed for waste coal reclamation.IntroductionIn 1947, Colmer and Hinkle showed that acid mine drainage was the result of an oxidative attack of the iron-mineral sulphides by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans to produce sulphuric acid . Ashmead (1955) proposed the use of these organisms to desulphurize coal , but the subsequent research effort was concentrated on the metabolism and physiology of these extreme acidophiles.A limited number of studies have been reported on the bacterial leaching of pyrite from coal (Silverman et al., 1963; Dugan, 1977). However, the bacterial oxidation of pyrite is a self-limiting first-order reaction, probably due to the precipitation of Fe(OH)J and elemental sulphur , which progressively inhibits intimate contact between the bacterial cells and the sulphide-mineral surface. Implementing stable final pit walls in open pit mines during the open pit design phase and mine exploitation has become one of the most important concerns of mining engineers in recent years. Failure of mine walls can potentially cause loss of life, roads blocks, and damage to mining machinery, temporarily or permanently halt production at the face and in the worst case scenario, close the mine. Thus, the role of creating stable mine walls is crucial to safety and general operations of mines and any effort to optimize this process has great economic value for mine operators. This paper aims to illustrate the technical aspects of use of the successful presplit blasting method in metal open pit mines. It also shows that using this approach not only increases safety in mines through wall stabilization, but also will boost economic profits by savings in stripping ratio. In this regard, appropriate practical concepts for designing the drilling and blasting patterns and the role of selecting the correct drilling rigs are elaborated in detail through conducting a case study in Chador Malu iron ore mine in Iran.
