"The coal deposits from Cape Perce on Cape Breton Island have been known to supply the coal requirements of the people living in or visiting the area for close to 300 years.A major block of coal has been identified off Cape Perce, which has several seams from which coal can be taken. The initial development by the Cape Breton Development Corporation will be in the Harbour Seam and constitutes the Donkin-Morien Development Project.The CBDC's confidence in this indicated resource is based on its knowledge of the Sydney Coal Field and from boreholes driven into the block during the summers of1977, 78 and 79. In 1980, further geological data were gathered from surface drilling and an intermediate-depth high-resolution seismic survey. The surface facilities for the Donkin-Morien Development Project will be located on the northern half of the cape, with access declines extending 3.9 km in a north-northeasterly direction to the Donkin block of coal reserves. The development has the potential of supplying all the coal needed f or the future electrical power generation requirements of Nova Scotia for many years to come.The planned mine, for which a project definition study has recently been completed, will have a production rate in excess of 3 million tonnes per year.IntroductionAt the Second CIM District 1 Meeting held in Halifax in October 1980, a background paper on Phase II of the Donkin-Morien Development Project was presented. The project involves a 3.2-million-tonne, saleable, underground coal mine. At that time, the chronological sequence of events had unfolded, starting with the initial boreholes through to the feasibility study, and on through site clearing and site preparation. This led to engineering design contracts for the portals and the two tunnels to be driven to intersect with the Harbour Seam close to 4 km from their entry point."

Prevention of cuprous and cupric oxide formation on stored ETP copper rod is a major concern for copper rod and wire producers. During normal storage periods copper oxide layers can increase from less then 100 A to more then 1000 A exceeding ASTM specifications and discoloring the rod surface. Various types of corrosion inhibitors are tested and compared in effectiveness for prevention of copper oxide formation on stored copper rod. Aromatic triazole compounds are also compared to a non-azole containing compound.

Traditionally, airflow requirements for diesel equipment operating in underground environments such as mines and tunnels were determined by multiplying the vehicle power by a ventilation rate that was either mandated by regulations(s) or determined empirically from known quantities. In some cases, utilization factors were further used to adjust (reduce) the total airflow calculations for a diesel equipment fleet. However, in light of the drastic reductions to diesel equipment emissions mandated by the US EPA Tier IV and EURO Stage 4 regulations, there is currently a great deal of uncertainty in the underground mining industry among those responsible for the ventilation of planned new mines or the expansion of current mines. Tier IV engine standards mandate a reduction of DPM and NOx of approximately 95%, but can ventilation rates at mines with Tier IV equipment (or equivalent) really be reduced by a factor of twenty? This paper outlines some of the factors that affect the airflow required for the ventilation of modern diesel-powered equipment and examines how they can be applied in determining a reasonable ventilation rate for Tier IV compliant equipment operating in subterranean environments.

"LOCATIONThe mine and mill are located in Lemoine township which is 20 miles directly south-east of the town of Chibougamau Quebec. Personnel live in Chibougamau and commute to the property over 33 miles of paved and gravel roads. Concentrates are trucked 13 miles to a railway siding on the line connecting Chibougamau and Quebec city.HISTORY Several companies explored the property before acquisition by Patino Mines (Quebec) Limited in 1973. Further exploration led to the discovery of a high grade copper-zinc orebody and the property was brought into production by the above company in 1976.ORE The ore contains 85% - 95% sulphides consisting of chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and minor gold and silver. Argenti tetrahedrite, antimonial silver, native bismuth and galena are also pre sent in very minor quantities. Associated gangue minerals are quartz, carbonates and occasionally chlorite."

In this study, the fine coal waste subjected to the experiments is taken from the waste stockpile of Soma Coal Plant. The possibilities of its evaluation and the production of clean coal were investigated. For this purpose, Reichert Coal Spiral and Shaking Table are used. The minus 1 mm coal waste includes 60.43% ash and 50% minus 38 micron material by weight. The microscopic observations of the screen fractions were shown that the clay minerals are in fine sizes and the coarser size fractions contain silica and carbonate minerals as ash forming materials. The tests were conducted after desliming. The commercial grade clean coal product containing 29-35% ash with a calorific value of 3800-4200 kcal/kg (15.91-17.58 MJ/kg) was obtained by gravity methods.

Improved depletion allowance rules, expanded investment tax credits, better use of business losses, and inflation proofing of personal capital gains on Canadian common shares are all part of the measures included in Mr. Lalonde's first budget to try to reinvigorate the battered Canadian economy.Improved DepletionUnder the Income Tax Regulations, a taxpayer who incurs Canadian exploration expense (and certain other eligible expenses) is permitted to deduct not only the full amount of the Canadian exploration expense (""CEE""), but also an additional allowance (the so-called earned depletion allowance) equal to one-third of the CEE. Thus, a taxpayer in certain circumstances can claim a deduction of $1.33 for each $1.00 of eligible expenditure, including CEE.Although CEE can be deducted from any source of the taxpayer's income (for example, from investment income, salary income, and so on), prior to budget date the earned depletion allowance was deductible only from the taxpayer's resource profits. This restriction on the deductibility of the earned depletion allowance substantially reduced the attraction of the allowance: few individual investors or investment companies, for example, have the required stream of resource profits, at least when the CEE or other eligible expenditure is made."

"Conventional exploration strategies identify many mineral deposits as potentially interesting, although only a few of them turn out to be of economic importance. In the context of exploration for sulphide nickel deposits in the Canadian Shield, a decisional model, based on a statistical study of parameters relative to nickel deposits as well as to barren sulphide occurences, has been developed.Because such geophysical variables as gravimetry, aeromagnetism and topography could be related to the relative importance of nickel-bearing deposits, a statistical analysis of 13 such variables was carried out for 98 targets which were considered promising after conventional exploration. Among these 98 targets are36 sulphide nickel deposits in the Canadian Shield and 62 drill-tested non-economic occurrences. The results of this study led to the development of a linear logistic model that permits evaluation, for each of the targets, of the probability of finding a nickel deposit of potential commercial interest. This decisional model can thus complement conventional exploration strategies.RésuméLes stratégies conventionnelles d'exploration définissent un très grand nombre de cibles comportant un inténet minier potentiel dont seules quelques-unes correspondent à des gisements économiquement importants. Dans Ie cadre de l'exploration des dépôts nickélifères du Bouclier Canadien, nous avons défini un modelé de décision fonde sur l'étude statistique de divers paramètres relatifs tant aux gisements d'importance qu'aux cibles dites stériles.Ayant fait l'hypothèse que certaines variables géophysiques (gravimétrie, aéromagnétisme et topographie) peuvent suffire à fournir des indications sur l'importance relative d'un gisement nickélifère, nous avons entrepris l'analyse statistique de 13 variables évaluées sur un échantillon de 98 cibles considérées comme potentiellement intéressantes par les stratégies conventionnelles d'exploration. Ces 98 cibles se composent de 36 dépôt nickélifères d ‘importance recontrés sur tout Ie Bouclier Canadien et de 62 cibles stériles reconnues par forage. Nous avons défini à l'aide de ces données un modèle logistique linéaire. Ce dernier nous permet d'évaluer pour chacune des cibles les chances de trouver un gisement. "All ten Canadian provinces have now tabled their 1981 /82 budgets . Only the provinces of Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia made more than minor modifications to their tax structures, with both Ontario and Quebec imposing major tax increases. In the past year, the federal budget was also released in the spring. Not so this year: we have that to look forward to in the fall!This month, Tax Notes presents a brief summary of the more significant tax changes introduced at the provinciallevels in the last months.Summary of provincial tax rate changesThe tax changes in this year's provincial budgets were both up and down- but there were far more tax increases than tax cuts.At the corporate tax level, two provinces, New Brunswick and British Columbia, increased their general corporate income tax rate; the former by two percentage points and the latter by one percentage point. Quebec, rather unexpectedly, sharply cut its corporate tax rate on business income, but increased some of its other business taxes at the same time. British Columbia reduced its corporate tax rate on small business income by two percentage points and Saskatchewan by one percentage point."

MR. J. A. H. CHURCH: The salient feature would seem to be that the thickness of the seam, in our coals at any rate, is the main factor in predisposition to spontaneous ignition. The evidence, incomplete it must be admitted, in the Saskatchewan and British Columbia fields, and complete in the Alberta field to my mind, shows this up very strongly. The German report on the upper Silesian coal fields definitely fixes the critical thickness at 13 feet, the British report goes far beyond this figure by stating that liability to ignition increases with the thickness of the seam over four feet. Before discussing the Alberta fires it would be well to note an error on page 12 -the probable cause of the fire in the Frank Mine should read "Spontaneous near fault. Heating first discovered 1909". Of the six fires attributed to spontaneous ignition all the seams were identical or in excess of the critical thickness mentioned in the German report. If there be any reason in the foregoing it is high time some forethought were taken to adopt some definite system of laying out the workings of such seams not so much on the outcrop districts as with a view to the future operation to the dip. Seams approaching 13 feet in thickness which to date have shown no disposition towards heating during the extraction of the outcrop areas may well cause infinite trouble or indeed total loss when the ventilating pressures increase as increase they must to the dip. This state of affairs can be combatted only by the adoption of a correct system of working and the provision of numerous airways of as large an area as may be compatible with the physical characteristics of the particular seam.

Pt-Bi intermetallic Nanoparticles was prepared by the polymer-anchor method. The electron micrographs shows that the dimensions of particles sharply distribute in the range of about 3-6 nm. The elemental ratio of Pt/Bi in the bimetallic particles is estimated by the electron probe microanalysis method. Pt-Bi intermetallic Nanoparticles shows a higher activity for the ORR than pure Pt. No significant dependence of the oxidation currents on the rotating speed of the electrode could be observed in the presence of methanol. This clearly indicates that the Pt-Bi is inactive to methanol.

In this paper microstructural development of nitride-Bonded SIC refractories is reported in presence of Al203, Mg() and Urea additives .The samples were prepared by mixing, shaping and firing at 1400-1500°c in a controlled atmosphere furnace. Phase analysis, microscopic observation and mechanical evaluation were taken for microstructural investigations. The strength of samples doped with Al203 was first increased and then decreased at higher amount of Al2O3 additions. The addition of MgO decreased the strength while the urea showed an improving effect on strength. These phenomena could be attributed to microstructural evolution and mainly to liquid phase formation and grain morphology. It was found that the additives such as Al203, MO and urea could modify the microstructure in terms of phase formation and texture modification, which in terms influences the mechanical behavior.

The Rabbit Lake In-Pit Tailings Management Facility contains frozen layers of tailings due to subaerial deposition during the coldest periods of winter. Thawing is required to ensure full consolidation of the tailings and to regain disposal space presently occupied by ice. Electric resistance heating has been used to heat soil for bitumen extraction and remediation of volatile contaminants. A preliminary evaluation of the application of electric resistance heating to thaw about 0.3 cubic metres of frozen tailings was conducted using tailings frozen at about -2 oC. Visible thawing of the tailings mass was observed after 25 hours, demonstrating the feasibility of this approach.

Discharge cones for large Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAG) and Autogenous Grinding (AG) mills are subjected to high wear as significant volumes of ground ore and slurry exit the mill. With the larger diameter mills of 32ft to 40ft in size becoming the norm, very high, concentrated wear is highlighting the limitations of conventional discharge cones and frequent changes are subsequently required. This paper outlines the advances made in the design of the Bullnose discharge cone. Superior wear materials to increase wear life over conventional rubber or chrome-moly steel discharge cones and the introduction of key design features to reduce reline times and improve fit and safety during installation, offer significant opportunities for the mill operator. Collated from multiple case studies, the wear data and reline history from 2004 to present clearly illustrate the way in which superior component longevity has reduced the frequency of relines over the life of the product to increase mill availability and effectively increase the tonnes milled in a period.

Based on the kinetics relationships of a solid - gas model, a software was developed for the prediction of oxidation. Preliminary prediction of oxidation by the software and experimental results of MgO-C refractories were studied and compared. By using the obtained data from this approach, the effective diffusion coefficient, intermolecular diffusion coefficient and diffusion activation energy in the MgO-C refractories, containing various amount of graphite were obtained at different temperatures. First of all, the prediction by the software was very compatible with experimental results, for different oxidation mechanisms in the MgO-C refractories. The results showed that pore diffusion is the predominant oxidation mechanism in this system. The results indicated that when graphite content was above 10wt%, the intermolecular diffusion coefficient was independent from graphite content, and it was closed to a constant value at each temperature.

"Most underground diesel equipment is equipped with diesel oxidization catalysts (DOCs) to reduce carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions. DOCs do not alter nitrogen oxides concentrations but can promote the oxidization of nitric oxide (NO) to the more toxic nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Vale and CanmetMINING have been researching how to reduce worker exposure to diesel emissions by testing mining equipment DOCs. Results indicate a > 77% decrease in carbon monoxide concentration but a 46–315% increase in NO2 concentration for 8-mode test cycles. It is recommended that DOCs that increase NO2 emissions be evaluated regarding their continued use in underground operations.RÉSUMÉ La plupart des équipements miniers souterrains sont équipés de catalyseurs d’oxydation diesel (DOC) afin de réduire les émissions de monoxyde de carbone et d’hydrocarbures. Les DOC ne modifient pas les concentrations des oxydes d’azote mais ils peuvent faciliter l’oxydation du monoxide d’azote (NO) en dioxyde d’azote (NO2), plus toxique. Vale et CanmetMINING effectuent des recherches pour réduire l’exposition des travailleurs aux émissions de diesel en analysant les DOC des équipements miniers. Selon les résultats, une diminution > 77 % dans la concentration de monoxyde de carbone est atteinte mais elle est accompagnée d’une augmentation de 46 à 315 % de la concentration en NO2 pour des cycles d’essais à 8 modes. Under conditions of stable crack propagation at room temperature, the elastic energy stored in ceramic materials is converted mainly to surface energy. However, at high temperatures, creep may also occur in such materials, in which case it will present a ductile behavior. This paper discusses the brittle-ductile transition of a refractory material. Stable crack propagation and creep tests were carried out under a three-point bending device. A commercial ceramic containing 63 wt-% of SiO2 and 31 wt-% of Al2O3 was used as testing material. The results revealed that the change in behavior from brittle to ductile was caused by softening of a vitreous phase present in the material's microstructure.
