Brown iron ore resources in Barbour, Butler, Crenshaw, and Pike Counties were investigated in a drilling program and geological study by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Alabama Geological Survey and the University of Alabama. The aggregate footage drilled was 18,010 linear feet. When developed, reserves of 12,664,000 long tons of crude ore were indicated, containing from 26.9 to 29.0 percent iron and 0.2 to 1.6 percent manganese under a maximum overburden of 40 feet. Total inferred crude ore for the four counties was calculated to be 827,700,000 long tons. Beneficiation of samples by simulated log washing and use of a 118-inch screen yielded from 46.8 to 51.7 percent iron and 0.2 to 2.6 percent manganese. Screen-test studies indicated no appreciable interlocking between the iron and manganese minerals and the waste particles of materials retained on a 200-mesh screen. Clay was prominent in micron-size slimes. Silica was deleterious in the minus 20-mesh size. While an indicated 2,198,000 dry long tons of usable iron ore can be recovered, sink-and-float tests show that it may be possible for 4,654,000 dry long tons to be recovered by other than log washing. However, applicable commercial processes have not been demonstrated.

In addition to the normal work and that pertaining to strategic minerals, the Metallurgical Division has been made responsible for carrying on major investigations in the development of processes' for the treatment of low-grade domestic manganese ores that heretofore have failed to yield products suitable for the preparation of ferromanganese, an alloy essential to every ton of steel produced. These investigations are particularly important at this time because of their part in tucking this country self-sufficient with regard to manganese when the stock-piled ore becomes e exhausted and as foreign shipments of ferro-grade ore are cut off. The results indicate that there is a good probability of accomplishing this objective, while at the same time conservation may be promoted through the use of normally useless material from the large, low-grade ore deposits.

This report has been prepared in response to a request by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Fairbanks Alaska District Office that the Bureau of Mines quantitatively assess the potential supply of minerals from undiscovered deposits in the White Mountains National Recreation Area (WMNRA) and the western part of the North Steese National Conservation Area (SNCA) in Alaska. The assessment will be used to assist in future land-use decision-making. Resource Management Plans (RMPs) for the WMNRA and the SNCA were approved by the BLM in 1986. These plans imposed significant restrictions on new mineral development in the two areas. The level of public concern regarding these actions, especially on the part of the mining industry, has spurred BLM to seek additional information about the potential supply of minerals from the two areas with assistance from the Bureau of Mines. The assessment focuses on an area within the WMNRA and the SNCA which has been administratively closed to mineral entry. The study area encompassed approximately 1.24 million acres and included all of the WMNRA and the western portion of the North SNCA (fig. ES-1). Three quantitative estimates of the potential supply of minerals from the study area were developed: 1) For all lands in the study area, assuming that they are open to mineral entry-the baseline analysis; 2) For those lands which have been closed to mineral entry; and 3) For eleven prospective mineral activity areas, assuming that all are open to mineral entry.

Syria is a federation of States under French mandate , comprising the Republic of Syria , the Lebanese Republic or Great Lebanon ( Grand Liban ) , the State of the Alouites , and the Djebel Druse Territory . Beirut is the center of government for the whole area , about 60,000 square miles . Syria is essentially an agricultural country . There is little manufacturing ; and with the exception of the production of asphalt and salt , the mineral industries have not yet risen to commercial importance . Whether this condition is due to a dearth of workable deposits or merely to insufficient exploration is not apparent . The mineral resources , as reported by various authorities , include asbestos , asphalt rock , bitumen , chromite , coal , copper , gold , gypsum , iron , lead , magnesite , manganese , marble and other building stones , nickel , ocher , pandermite ( a hydrous borate of calcium) , petroleum , phosphate rock , pyrite , salt , silver , sulphur , tin , and titanium ( ilmenitic beach sands ) .

"INTRODUCTION Feldspars represent one of the most abundant groups of minerals and constitute nearly Go percent of the material contained in the igneous rocks. They are grouped in a series of related aluminum silicates with varying amounts of potash, soda, and lime. .Approximately 85 percent of the feldspar produced in the United States is used as a flux in the production of glass, pottery, enamel and sanitary ware, brick, and tile. Notwithstanding the abundance of feldspar in the earth's crust, the only deposits that are worked to any extent are the pegmatites or coarsely crystalline dikes where natural segregation of the constituents facilitates recovery of the feldspar with a minimum of free quartz, mica, tourmaline, garnet, and other iron-bearing minerals that are detrimental in most ceramic industries.Although there are three glassplants and numerous other ceramic industries in Texas, all of the feldspar used in these plants is from other States. In the Llano region of central Texas, however, there are numerous coarse pegmatite dikes consisting primarily of feldspar and quartz in ratios up to 3 to 1. One of the more important of these dikes is the Badu Hill deposit in Llano County, Tex., which was first described by Carl Chelf 4/ in 1942. Following an examination of the deposit by W. D. McMillan, engineer in charge of the Texas field office of the Bureau of Mines, in January 1946, a proposal was made to investigate the deposit by core drilling in cooperation with the Department of Ceramic Engineering, University of Texas. This report presents the results of the cooperative investigation, which was begun April 24, 1946, and completed May 17, 1946."

This report describes a gage which, when used with my procedure for producing strain relief, will measure the resulting borehole deformation, From the borehole deformation the magnitude and direction of the principal stresses in a plane normal to the axis of the borehole can be calculated. The design considerations, mechanical construction, sensitivity, and stability of the gage are discussed. INTRODUCTION During the past two decades an increasing mount of consideration has been given to the problem of measuring and evaluating stress in rock around underground openings. Several investigators have made theoretical and model studies of the stress and (or) strain concentrations around simulated mine openings or in structural members, such as mine pillars or immediate roof. Other investigators have developed gages for directly or indirectly measuring stress or strain, and a number of reports present the results of measurements made with these gages. Because various methods and instruments have been developed, factors involved in this type of measurement will be briefly considered.

"The Riley tungsten property of the Northern Nevada Mining Co. was examined by the Bureau of Mines in August 1943, and from February 22 to August 22, 1945, the property was explored by the Bureau.Riley mine, which comprises 60 acres, is in sec. 9, T. 38 N., R. 42 E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, in the Potosi Mining District, on the east slope of the Osgood Range in eastern Humboldt County, Nevada. J. S. Riley is president of Northern Nevada Mining Co., the general offices of which are at 29 East First Street, Reno, Nev.Winnemucca, Nev., 42 miles southwest of the mine and on the main line of the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific Railroads and U. S. Highway 40, is the nearest supply center. The post office for the Potosi district is 15 miles south at Red House, Nev., a station on the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific Railroads. A good dirt road, which leaves U. S Highway 40 about 15 miles east of Winnemucca, extends northeast to the property.Tungsten occurs as scheelite in a characteristic Nevada contact-metamorphic tactite deposit between limestone and granodiorite Fifteen diamond-drill holes were completed for a total length of 2,630 feet.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.Special acknowledgment is made to A. C. Two short adits and several shallow pits were excavated in a search for silver ore, but no record of precious metal production exists."

This resume of the work of the Petroleum and Natural - Gas Division of the Bureau of Mines for the fiscal years 1940 and 1941 is the second of a series. of progress reports . It brings forward from the 1939 annual report information on the course of activities of the division in carrying out its objectives of increased conservation and better utilization of petroleum, natural gas, and related resources through a coordinated program of research and fact - finding . It discusses, also, special assignments. executed for other Government agencies, which in recent years have constituted a considerable part of the division's work ." . In the present national emergency, in which petroleum is so essential , many of the Bureau's research activities bear directly on the availability, conservation, and use of petroleum for national defense . Accordingly, during the past year attention has been focused for the most part.on.problems associated with the needs of national defense . Several long-time researches , which in themselves are potential sources of desirable knowledge , were judged to be of secondary importance under present conditions and accordingly were suspended . Studies also were oriented in line with rapidly changing conditions to meet the demand for accurate findings on short notice . The Petroleum and Natural - Gas Division has experiment stations at Bartlesville , Okla . , and Laramie, Wyo . , a field office at Dallas , Tex . , and a field office and laboratory at San Francisco , Calif . It also operates the Government helium plant near Amarillo , Tex. In addition to the helium operations , some of the petroleum and natural - gas research activities are conducted at the Amarillo plant .

This report describes Bureau of Mines research that led to the design, prototype fabrication, and successful proof-of-concept testing of an improved stench fire-warning system for underground noncoal mines. Stench systems are the most widely used means of warning driers in underground noncoal mines of fires or other emergencies. A stench system alerts miners that an emergency condition exists by injecting an odorant into the mine air. Although stench warning systems have been used successfully for over 60 yr, present systems suffer several serious shortcomings, including odorant toxicity, unreliability of warnings, widely varying stench concentrations, and others. In 1980, the Bureau began a research program to upgrade the stench warning system. The resultant system overcomes the deficiencies of existing systems by substituting tetrahydrothiophene for the commonly used ethyl mercaptan stench odorant, and through the use of a specially designed stench injector. The improved injector reliably meters stench fluid into either ventilation-air or compressed-air streams at a precisely controlled rate. Prototype hardware has been fabricated and proof-of-concept tested under bath laboratory and in-mine conditions.

Starting on a small scale, the equipment for processing synthesis gas to form liquid hydrocarbons was expanded to handle 100 m) 3/hr. This reactor was successfully designed and constructed, and a basis for future design methods was established. Because, however, this work was carried out on an empirical basis, it is felt that a more thorough theoretical study should be made in an effort to increase the efficiency of the process, particularly in the development of a simpler converter.

The United States Bureau of Mines has made a study of roof control in 68 mines operating in the Pittsburgh coal bed in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. In making these studies, much information was also obtained on various exact methods of development and pillar extraction as practiced by this large group of mines. It is proposed in this paper to describe these methods, by which this group of mines in 1931, a year of reduced industrial activity, produced 28,123,000 tons of bituminous coal - 7.4 percent of the national production for the same year and an amount equal to the combined production of the coal mired in the States of Alabama, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. The results of these studies, insofar as they pertain to the prevention of injuries from falls of roof, have been published by the Bureau of Mines. In this paper only a few mines typical of each system will be described; however, should the reader be interested in other details with respect to these mines, he may refer to the following publications: T.P. 522, 1932, 43 pp. Falls of roof and coal in mines operating in the Pittsburgh coal bed in Marion and Monongalia Counties, W. A two-dimensional finite element program has been modified and extended to account for some of the rock mechanics complexities associated with single entry development of longwall coal mine panels. Program capability includes arbitrary assignment of element properties without regard to element ordering, anisotropic elastic, plastic and brittle rock properties that may be time dependent (aging), arbitrary mining sequences and provision for the effects of artificial support on the adjacent strata. Failure is according to an extended von Mises criterion that may be linear or quadratic in form; flow rules are obtained from the yield function taken as the plastic potential, but brittle behavior is treated as a discontinuous process of material properties change with deformation. In either case the extent of failure is calculated from the external boundary conditions. Application of the program to essentially two-dimensional problems resulted in lose agreement between calculated displacements and field measurements in the double entry system. Bleeder entries were stable in one locality and not in another. Artificial support had little influence on stability.

This bibliography was compiled by the Bureau of Mines as part of an investigation into the possible utilization of low-temperature coal-tar bases. The bibliography consists of literature and patent references from about 1945 to 1961 and is divided into the following headings: Analysis and Composition; Production, Synthesis, Reactions, and Utilization; and Separation, Purification, and Properties. Although over 1,000 references are included, no attempt was made to insure a comprehensive survey. The literature and patent references are arranged alphabetically by author or patentee. When several publications have the same author they are listed in reverse order of age, with the newest first. An author index is included because secondary authors are not cross-indexed. In almost every instance, the entry is accompanied by a Chemical Abstracts reference for those interested in locating an abstract of the original paper.

A special appropriation made by Congress in July 1940 provided funds for the investigation of methods for recovering manganese from low-grade [ ] domestic deposits. These funds were assigned to the United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines. A committee, identified as the Technologic Committee on Manganese of the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences, was appointed to recommend the allocation of the funds for investigation of the more promising projects.

A demonstrated reserve base (DRB) of bituminous coal suitable for cokemaking has been estimated based on the latest published information on U.S. coal reserves. Bureau of Mines analyses of raw coalbed samples were used to classify the coals as low-, medium-, and high-volatile bituminous and grade them as premium, marginal, and latent coking coals. Coal rank was used as the basis for identifying coking coals, and ash and sulfur content were used to determine coking coal grade. The demonstrated reserve base of coking coal for the entire United States is 162.67 billion tons. However, only 18.96 billion tons are premium (metallurgical) grade, and between 80 and 99 percent occurs in the Eastern States. The demonstrated reserve base of marginal-grade coking coal is 31.3 billion tons; more than half the marginal reserve base is in the Eastern States, and most of the medium- and low-volatile marginal coals are in the Eastern States. The Eastern and Midwestern States contain most of the latent-grade DRB of 112.4 billion tons; most (106.6 billion tons) is high-volatile coal, and 98 percent of the medium- and low-volatile latent coals occur in the Eastern States. Based on the worst assumption, which assumes that only premium-grade coals are used for cokemaking, the DRB for high-volatile coal would suffice for 127 years, the medium-volatile coal for 80 years, and the low-volatile coal for 83 years.

This study forms a part of Bureau of Mines continuing research on thermal fragmentation of rocks. The potential of internal heating techniques for rock fragmentation is discussed. A concept of rock fragmentation with rapid inter¬nal heating of a localized inner volume of rock is advanced The energy required for rock fragmentation is made available by creating a required vol¬ume of localized heating. The fragmentation of rock using the proposed method is analyzed and qualitatively compared with the results of experiments with Charcoal granite, Dresser basalt, and Sioux Quartzite. High frequency dielec¬tric heating below 100 MHz is used in the study as an example to examine the working of the concept. The selection of operating conditions for the experi¬mental heating is explained. Fragmentation of Charcoal granite and Dresser basalt test rock blocks is achieved for localized heating below 550° C. The heated volume required for fragmentation is observed to be less than 2 percent of the test block volume and the electrical energy consumption is in the order of 3.5 to 6 5 kwhr/m3 The method offers a possibility for in situ fragmenta¬tion of rocks, favorable for internal heating. The method is highly dependent on rock properties governing internal heat generation The efficiency of dielectric heating in the experimental study is observed to increase with increasing dielectric loss of the rock material, ranging from about 10 percent in Sioux. Liquid oxygen explosives are ordinarily made from a carbonaceous absorbent and from liquid oxygen of high purity. These explosives have a limited but definite field of usefulness; their properties have been described in the literature, which includes several publications of the Bureau of Mines, the most recent dealing with fire-retardant treatments.3/ It seems generally conceded that the outstanding hazards in the use of these explosives are their high inflammability and their relative sensitivity to mechanical action. Each of these topics has been studied, and some interesting practical results have been obtained. Treatments have been described[7] that render liquid-oxygen explosives prepared from granular carbonaceous absorbents practically immune to the action of igniting agents representing or exceeding practical hazards in violence.

Molybdenum has been successfully cast into static and rotating molds in conventional equipment used for casting titanium and zirconium. Melting was accomplished by using an arc potential of 36 to 40 volts with a current of 10,000 amperes. Pouring efficiency, after a skull had been formed in the crucible, averaged 70 percent. Techniques are described by which four successful castings were made. Tensile properties on specimens cut from one centrifugally cast tube averaged: Tensile strength, 39,800 p.s.i.; yield strength (0.1 pct. offset), 35,300 p.s.i.; elongation, nil; reduction in area, nil; impact strength, 2 ft.-lb.; hardness DPH (diamond pyramid hardness) 180. Mold reaction was not evident in shapes cast in machined graphite. This was not true, however, for rammed graphitic-base molds.

Large scale tests were conducted on quartzitic gravel and crushed sand-stone to investigate pertinent geotechnical properties for backfill support of egress shafts. Such shafts are envisaged for rapid launching of deep-based missiles. The backfill support is designed to resist shaft closure under dynamic loading, and must also drain rapidly to a lower catch chamber to allow launching. Large scale tilt shear tests were performed to measure the internal shear strength of the two backfill materials. Shaft filling and emptying tests were conducted in a 12 ft deep, 3 ft diameter model section of shaft drilled in sandstone. One half of the model was smooth bored, the other half rough-surfaced to represent drill and blast surfaces. Vertical and horizontal pressure cells indicated that stress only built-up during the first 1 to 1 ½ diameters of filling, due to the high-sidewall friction of 38° for the rough shaft and 31° for the smooth shaft. Interface sliding tests were performed to confirm these figures. Static and dynamic deformation tests were also per-formed, and indicated moduli as high as 56,000 psi, which will give excellent shaft support. Both the shaft support characteristics and the ease of emptying of gravel look particularly promising.

This progress report covers the period from January 1949 to the end of the fiscal year, June 30, 1950. Three runs were successfully completed, and one run was terminated as the result of failure of a cast reaction tube. Including the abbreviated run, the gasifier was operated for 1,915 hours, during which some 428 tons of natural and steam- dried lignite was partly gasified In producing 20 million cubic feet of gas. Gas-production rates varied from 7.8 to 16.4 thousand cubic feet per hour, the latter being the highest production rate yet reached; hydrogen-carbon monoxide ratios of the product gas varied from 1.85, the lowest ratio yet produced, to 6.5; and heat-transfer rates through the heated wall of the outer tube varied from 2,100 to 4,400 B.t.u. per square foot an hour. The general objective of the project is to establish the technology and economy of the gasification of lignite in an externally heated, metal, annular retort. Specific objectives include determination of the useful life of the metal retort tube, which is a continuing problem, and special objectives that were established for each run as part of the systematic investigation of the basic variables of the gasification process. For runs 10 and 11 the special objective was the influence of the lignite feed rate on gasification; for run 12, a comparison of dried and natural lignite, and the production of gas having a hydrogen-carbon monoxide ratio less than 2; and for run 13, the influence of a gradually increasing steam rate with steam admitted to either the upper or lower reaction zones. In addition, during each run the sulfur distribution and concentration in the product gas and char were investigated. Experimental results obtained using the lignite feed rate as the variable indicated that the gas yield per ton of natural lignite varied inversely with the feed rate. Comparison of the gasification of natural and steam-dried Dakota Star lignite indicated that the dried lignite was a superior gasification material because: 1. The hourly gas production was higher at normal combustion space temperatures under nearly equal experimental conditions. 2. On the moisture- and ash-free basis, a considerably higher feed rate could be maintained at a relatively high percentage of carbon gasified. 3. At nearly equal moisture- and ash-free feed rates, the specific gas yield was higher. The location of steam admission was found to be important because the gas yield per ton of natural lignite was higher when at least a portion of' the process steam was admitted to the upper reaction zone. Heat balances showed the potential heat in the gas and char to be 71.8 to 83.6 percent of the total heat input. The sulfur concentration in the product gas was low, being in the range of 35 to 140 grains per 100 cu. ft., of which 1.5 to 2.3 grains was organic sulfur. Careful measurements and inspection of the 310-alloy rolled plate tube following runs 11, 12, and 13 showed no excessive corrosion; however, some radial deformation had occurred indicating that deformation or creep might be the limiting factor in the life of the tube.
