Data presented on the physical characteristics of the reservoir oil, Aneth field, represent the initial phase of a study of Paradox basin reservoir oils being made by petroleum engineers of the Federal Bureau of Mines, Petroleum Research Center, Laramie, Wyo. The purpose of the study is to determine the original reservoir-oil characteristics in several important new discoveries in the Paradox Basin and to investigate correlations between the properties of these reservoir oils and structural or areal position within the basin, If migration is limited and oil accumulates near its source, then it seems probable that few differences should be found in the composition and characteristics of reservoir oils occurring in given age rocks and within the confines of a geological basin. Within these limits, conditions that effected the formation of oil and its transfer from parent to storage rocks probably were rather uniform in an area the size of most of our geological basins. However, if oils should migrate considerable distances, it seems logical to expect that the relative quantities of gas and liquid components may differ in traps occurring along the direction of migration, corresponding with the theory of differential entrapment (5).4/

Analyses of light oils produced from the fluidized carbonization of coal at 485°, 550°, 600°, and 660° C are presented. Tar vapors from 485 C fluidized carbonization were thermally treated at 600°, 700°, and .800° C, and the analyses of light oils produced by this treatment are also presented. Procedures were developed for analysis of coal carbonization light oil by gas chromatography to permit a more definitive analysis than can be obtained by the conventional distillation procedure. An increase in low-boiling olefins, benzene, and toluene, a decrease in low-boiling paraffins, and little change in the remainder of the aromatics was observed with increased temperature of carbonization.

This Information Circular covers States west of the Mississippi, and Information Circular 8704 covers States east of the Mississippi. These data replace previously published compilations of energy consumption statistics by States and districts. Future annual studies are planned using the same Btu conversion factors applied in these two Information Circulars.

The productive capacity of natural-gasoline and cycle plants in the United States as of January 1, 1952 was 811,596 barrels per day, an increase of 163,691 barrels per day since the last survey on January 1, 1950. The rate of growth during these 2 years has been 12 percent per year s only slightly below the maximum rate, recorded from 1948-50. This survey, for the first time, presents capacity data on a barrel rather than a gallon basis. Also, for the first time, a break-down of capacity by products has been obtained. The combined LP-gas producing capacity of plants and fractionators equaled 382,790 barrels per day, 47 percent of the total industry capacity tor all products. During January 1952, LP-gas and natural gasoline and other products were each produced at the rate of 76 percent of the January 1 capacity.

The problem of obtaining enough manganese for use in the manufacture of steel appears likely to recur when international relationships are disturbed and to become serious at any time when the United States is cut off from its customary supply. Some idea of the problems that an e under war conditions may be obtained from a description given by Ellicott3/ in 1918 before the American Iron and Steel Institute. This condition arises because in normal times there is an economic advantage in importing available high-grade foreign ores to the neglect of our own less satisfactory resources. That considerable low-grade manganese ore and a much smaller amount of high-grade material are available in this country is well known from geological surveys 4/ and has been confirmed by Bureau of Mines investigations. Locations of the various deposits are indicated in figure 1. The possibility of greatly expanding domestic production was actually demonstrated from 1913 to 1918, when the annual production of manganese from domestic ores rose from about 4 percent to approximately 35 percent 6/7/ of the total consumption of ferromanganese and spiegeleisen. In idea of how domestic production compares with total consumption in the United States can be obtained 1 from figure 2, taken from the Minerals Yearbook8/ for 1970. Assuming that it is possible to increase production of manganese ores sufficiently to supply all our needs, such a program presumably would require 2 or 3 years, and the cost of production would certainly rice considerably, for some time at least. The Bureau of Mines investigated a promising new technology for recovering A1203 from alunite to support the Bureau's alumina miniplant project. Results are presented for a study of the technical feasibility of treating alunite crushing and grinding reject fines for recovery of A1203. Alunite pellets having sufficient strength and resistance to degradation were produced by combining fines and coarse alunite with a KOH binder. The best pellets were prepared, in a laboratory pelletizer, by adding 1 pct KOH as a 5-pct solution to a mixture of 40 pct alunite dust (98 pct minus 65 mesh) and 60 pct coarse alunite (minus 20 plus 65 mesh). Calcines suitable for K2SO4 and A1203 recovery were produced by reducing dehydrated alunite pellets with sulfur in a laboratory shaft furnace for 4 h at 600° C, followed by air oxidation of the reduced calcine for 1 h at 600° C. This report presents design calculations, schematic diagrams, and discussions of the essential features of a proposed process research unit (PRU)--a continuous, 6-lb/h alunite shaft furnace--for studying the process.

This report summarizes the cost of U.S, mining and milling industry compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) interim water quality guidelines for waste discharges. Applicable excerpts from Public Law 92-500 are stated and interpreted in conjunction with the guidelines being used for implementation of the law. Over 200 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers applications for discharge permits were used to develop the quality and quantity data base needed to estimate the cost to comply with EPA guidelines, Cost of three basic treatment methods were considered: Aeration, addition of lime, and sedimentation. From the process design, cost-capacity graphs were developed to consider maximum flow rate, maxi lime addition, and average flow rates. The graphical method used in this evaluation should provide a reasonable guide to the effect of waste treatment and, therefore, Public Law 92-500 and corresponding EPA guidelines on the mineral processing industry. The cost of complying with the EPA guidelines will have the effect of prompting the mining industry to minimize the production of waste water and of undertaking some additional treatment, Two case studies are presented to illustrate efforts that might be fruitful for minimizing waste water production and for treatment of combinations of acid mine drainage, mill wastes, and metallurgical process wastes when treatment is deemed necessary.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed batch equilibrium contact experiments to examine the ability of activated coconut-shell carbon to adsorb various metal cyanide complexes. Tests were also conducted to determine the effect these cyanide complex impurities might have on the adsorption of gold by the activated carbon. Metal cyanide species included in the investigation were antimony, arsenic, cadmium, calcium, cobalt, gold, iron, mercury, nickel, silver, thallium, and zinc. Tests were made over a pH range of 6.4 to 12.5. The carbon exhibited a preference for gold adsorption over other metals present in solution. In the absence of gold, the metal cyanide complexes were adsorbed; adsorption generally decreased with increasing pH. However, calcium and thallium adsorptions increased with increasing pH, while arsenic and iron were not adsorbed at any pH.

Permanent support of the back is an important economic factor in maintaining a tunnel or other underground opening in condition to render the service for which it was driven. Timber has been most commonly used for support in tunneling and drifting because of its strength and ease of installation. Even when treated for decay, however, timber is subject to deterioration and, over a long period of time, should not be considered a permanent support. Concrete support or lining is permanent and has been used in tunnels of every size for many years but has been almost exclusively cast in place, a difficult, costly process. This report deals with the design and installation of precast concrete supports to combine the best features of both methods.

A survey of electromagnetic noise reports was performed and a summary of the results are given. Industrial concerns were surveyed for techniques to minimize the effects of electromagnetic noise and are presented. The common types of communication links used in mines today are presented. A mathematical development was presented which determines the probability of bit errors versus distance for various types of communication links designed for in mine use. The probability of undetected errors for the protocols of the communication links is given together with burst error detection.

Tantalum and columbium can be extracted from several of their ores or concentrates by chlorination procedures. Direct chlorination of high-grade minerals in the presence of carbon at temperatures between 500° and 800° C will extract up to 99 percent of the tantalum and columbium. Metallurgical beneficiation of low-grade source materials by carbothermic reduction produces a ferroalloy that is amenable to chlorination at a temperature of 500° C. Over 90 percent of the tantalum and columbium can be recovered.

This report is one of a series written by members of the Solid Fuels Mission to Germany describing wartime developments in the mining, prepara- tion, and utilization of coal. This mission was organized early in 1945 under the auspices of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee, which cooperated with a counterpart British Committee. In some instances; engi- neers from other allied countries cooperated. The Solid Fuels Mission operated under the direction of a steering committee headed by Dr. C. J. Potter, Deputy Solid Fuels Administrator. The personnel of the mission consisted of H. F. Yancey, in charge, J. W. Buch, Thomas Fraser, L. L. Newman, and L. D. Schmidt of the Bureau of Minos; H. H. Lowry, Director of the Coal Research Laboratory, Carnegie Institute of Technology; H. J. Rose, Vice-President and Director of Research, Bituminous Coal Research, Inc.; and F. H. Reed, Chief Chemist, Illinois Geological Survey. E. 0. Rhodes, Manager, Development Section, Tar Products Division, Koppers Co., Inc., served on the mission for the Chemical Subcommittee of 1.I.I.C. in Europe. His assignment was the investigation of the coal-tar industry. In this connection he prepared this report on the German Low- Temperature Tar Industry as a companion to his provious report on the German High-Temperature Tar Industry (Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7409). Because of Mr. Rhodes' extensive experience in these fields and the impor- tance of the subject material to the coal producers and those utilizing coal-tar products, both reports are issued by the Bureau of Mines. Over fifty reports were written by the members of the Solid Fuels Mis- elon. These, together with microfilms of supporting data obtained in the course of the investigations, are on file at the Foreign Documents Group, Technical Reports Section, Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh, Pa., where they are available for examination. The Bureau of Mines conducted a comprehensive laboratory study of the thermal ignitability of various carbonaceous dust clouds with particular emphasis on various ranks of coal dust. The tests were conducted using a new 1.2-L furnace. Autoignition temperatures of dust clouds were obtained as a function of coal volatility and particle size. Dust particles and gas samples were collected by a rapid-sampling system in order to study the reactions involved in preignition and postignition processes. The autoignition temperatures measured in the new 1.2-L furnace were significantly lower and therefore more conservative than those measured previously in the Godbert-Greenwald furnace. The combined effects of thermal and electrical ignition of dust clouds were also studied in the 1.2-L furnace using electrical discharges of varying energies at ambient and elevated temperatures. The minimum spark energy necessary to ignite a dust cloud decreased significantly as the temperature of the dust cloud increased.

Shales and clays from Illinois were sampled, tested, and evaluated to determine feasibility of producing lightweight aggregate by rotary-kiln methods. Sampling procedures and the 1 ,,,y of the Pennsylvanian shale units are discussed. Chemical, X-ray spectrographic and X-ray petrographic analyses were run on the samples to determine if a correlation existed between chemical mineralogic composition and expansion. Preliminary expansion testing was conducted in a muffle furnace. Rotary-kiln tests were conducted in a 16- inch by 14-foot rotary kiln. The weight of the aggregate ranged from 27 to 59 pounds per cubic foot. Concrete cubes employing the aggregate were tested to determine the qualities of the concrete. Compressive strength of the concrete using the 7-bag of cement cement per cubic yard mix, after autoclave curing for 6 hours, ranged from 2,950 to 6,750 psi. No correlation was found between the chemical, X-ray spectrographic, and X-ray and petrographic analyses and expansion, Sixteen samples made suitable lightweight aggregates in the laboratory rotary kiln. The expansion temperature range of eight of the samples was extremely narrow, and difficulties would probably be encountered in processing these materials commercially.

Marked progress in safety has characterized the operation of coal mines in general in the State of Washington during the 5- year period 1928-1932 , particularly during the years 1931 and 1932. Physical conditions such as steep pitches , inherently bad roof and floor , prevalence of gas , and explosibility of the dust of Washington coals present certain definite hazards . Although advances have been made in accident reduction in Washington , the State still has far to go in that direction . The State has endeavored to reduce its coal -mine accidents by the usual method of making certain definite safety requirements mandatory . The value of education has not been underrated , but the educational method used has not altogether achieved the res lts desired by the industry itself , particularly within certain imdividual organizations . The past 2 years have witnessed a growth , in certain instances , of the essential ideas that the observance of safety precautions on the part of all is demanded if accidents are to be reduced , and that the initiating and carrying out of any program to promote and obtain desired results in accident elimination must begin and function from the top downward . Mining operations of Washington mines have been described in various publications of the United States Bureau of Mines .

This is the fourth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-363/. The second report gave the same data? for motor gasolines sold during the summer of 19364/. The third report of the series gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1936-375/. This report covers 63 brands of gasoline represented by 1,136 samples excluding the Pacific Coast. Those from the Pacific Coast were averaged by the Pacific Coast technical group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. In some areas reports were received from five or six companies on the same brands of gasoline, whereas in other areas only one company reported on a brand. Thus, it can be seen that some of the data are more representative than others.

Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating coal mine, Robena No.4, located near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief time periods. With present instrumentation, the spectrum can be covered from 40 Hz to 400 kHz. It is recorded using broad-band analog magnetic tape, and the noise data are later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise envelopes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of tine to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots. The general results are that at frequencies below 10 kHz, power line noise within the mine is severe. Impulsive noise is severe near arcing trolleys, and at lower frequencies near any transmission line. Carrier trolley phone signals and harmonics are strong throughout the mine whenever the trolley phone is in operation. Additional information beyond that included in this report may be obtained from the authors, who are with the Electromagnetics Division of the National Bureau of Standards.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of tests to determine how well the Bendix BDX 60, the Gilian HFS 113U, the MSA Fixt-Flo, and the Spectrex PAS-3000 dust sampling pumps control the flow rate at 2 L/min. These tests were performed because users need to know the performance characteristics of sampling pumps to select the pump that best satisfies their sampling requirements. Long-term (6- to 8-h) flow stability at various backpressures was examined in relation to the flow control tolerance of ±5% of the flow, the level imposed by Federal regulations; four of the five Bendix pumps did not meet the criterion for this test, which was passed by all other pumps tested. Flow control recovery times were measured at transient backpressures; all pumps evaluated met the criterion for this test. The low-flow indicators of the sampling pumps were tested; only two Bendix pumps and one Gilian pump met the criterion of indicating a flow change greater than ±5%. In the pulsation flow measurement test all of the pumps passed, with pulsating flows greater than 20 Hz. The Bureau also evaluated the manuals accompanying the sampling pumps. All were judged adequate except the Spectrex manual, which was judged poor.
