One of the goals of the Bureau of Mines is to develop metallurgical pro-cesses that conserve energy and/or that take advantage of abundant domestic energy sources. Western lignites and subbituminous coals can be used for firing pellet induration and metallization furnaces. However, the refractory linings of these furnaces must be able to withstand attack from corrosive alkali metal oxides present in the ash of many of the low-rank fossil fuels. The Bureau of Mines conducted dynamic and static slag tests on high-alumina and alumina-silica refractories to determine their resistance to lignite ash slags. The investigations showed that increased alkali content in the lignite ash caused increased corrosion and erosion of the tested refractories. The degree of corrosion decreased with increasing alumina content, with the 99-percent-alumina refractories having the highest resistance. In general, the matrix phase was attacked preferentially to the alumina grains. Also, porosity reduction and tar impregnation enhanced the corrosion and erosion resistance. The 90-to 99-percent-alumina refractories are recommended for use as furnace linings in alkali slag environments.

The major industrial classifications in stone mining are dimension stone (used for construction purposes), crushed and broken stone (aggregates), cement, and lime. Stone mines comprised 29.7% of all mining operations. • Mines producing crushed and broken stone (n = 3,372) comprised 78.2% of all stone mining operations.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) defines an independent contractor as "any person, partnership, corporation, subsidiary of a corporation, firm, association or other organization that contracts to perform services or construction at a mine." Contractors that perform specific types of work are required to report the number of employees who perform work at coal mines and at noncoal mines.

A solvent extraction procedure using 8-hydroxyquinoline and chloroform was investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a preconcentration technique for the determination of aluminum, calcium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, magnesium, manganese, nickel, and zinc in large samples of high purity tungsten. X-ray spectrographic and atomic absorption methods were used to determine the trace metals after preconcentration. The presence of 10 grams of tungsten had a pronounced effect on the distribution of 8-hydroxyquinoline between the aqueous and chloroform phases. This change in the 8-hydroxyquinoline distribution in turn had an adverse effect on the extraction of the trace metals. Extraction efficiencies can also be adversely affected by an increase in the quantity of extractable metals present, as shown by radiotracer tests using 65Zn. Excess 8-hydroxyquinoline in the extracts did not interfere with the determination -of the serious interference in the combined ion exchange paper--X-ray spectrographic method. Although preconcentration by 8-hydroxyquinoline extraction was found to be partially successful, other preconcentrationn methods based on ion exchange and dithizone extraction were found to be superior.

The theory of electromagnetic fields indicates such fields could be used to detect and locate trapped miners. To be useful, the hardware of the system must meet a number of requirements, including small size, intrinsic safety, and rugged construction. Such hardware has been built, and the system has been tested by the Bureau of Mines and its contractors. These tests indicate that the electromagnetic method provides a practical means to locate miners in emergencies.

The Bureau of Mines performed laboratory research to determine the effects of a barium-based fuel additive on diesel particulate emissions. The test engine was typical of types used to power underground coal min-ing equipment. Test parameters consisted of baseline measurements without additive, three fuel additive concentrations, and five steady-state engine loads, all at 1,200 r/min. Additive effects on soot mass concen-tration, opacity, particle size distribution, volatile fraction, and NOx emissions were determined. Important findings are as follows: Using the manufacturer's recom-mended additive concentration increased the gravimetrically measured mass of particulate by 30 to 80 pct at four of the five steady-state load conditions. Soot measurements by optical methods did not agree with those by gravimetric techniques, for additive-treated fuels. The additive reduced volatile hydrocarbons adsorbed on filter deposits by up to 50 pet. At most engine loads, carbon particulate was also reduced. About 40 pet of the barium added to the fuel was accounted for in the exhaust. The health implications for miners were considered, but no firm conclusions were drawn or recommendations made because the results are for steady-state conditions, which may not be representative of real-world operation of diesel-powered equipment underground.

The Bureau of Mines developed laboratory-scale processes to recover sodium phosphates and metal values from waste sludges generated by the phosphate treatment of automobile and appliance components. After treatment of the sludge with NaOH, followed by coke or hydrogen reduction and sintering, zinc and lead were recovered as fume; the sinter was separated by leaching into a metallic product, chiefly iron and nickel, and high-purity disodium or trisodium phosphate.

Data on smog-forming reactivities of exhaust aldehydes are scarce. Such data were obtained by irradiating in a smog chamber typical exhaust aldehydes, individually and in exhaustlike mixtures. Observed reactivity manifestations were rate of nitrogen dioxide formation (RNO2) and yields of oxidant, peroxyacetyl nitrate, and formaldehyde. Results showed that exhaust aldehydes vary widely in reactivity. Formaldehyde showed high RNO2 reactivity but low oxidant yield; benzaldehyde, [m]-, and [p]-tolualdehyde were totally unreactive when irradiated individually; [o]-tolualdehyde was reactive. In mixtures, benzaldehyde manifested reactivity in terms of peroxybenzoyl nitrate yield. Exhaust aldehydes as a group are judged to be as reactive as the exhaust olefin group. The importance of the aldehyde contribution to exhaust reactivity and methods for assessing such contribution are discussed.

"INTRODUCTIONMany of the facilities and much of the equipment available to the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust are highly specialized and therefore, unique to the universities associated with the Center as illustrated in FIGURES 30 through 39.For example, a sample bank of 1300 U.S. coal specimens housed in the Coal Research Section, Deike Building of The Pennsylvania State University has been characterized for physical, elemental, mineralogical and maceral compositions. The results of this research have been used to initiate a study of the relationship between pneumoconioses and coal properties. Selected samples from this bank have been used in animal (primate) studies at the Milton S. Hershey (Penn State) and West Virginia University Medical Centers. These laboratory facilities for research in the medical and biological disciplines is state-of-the-art and includes a primate colony where dust research is currently underway. The Materials Research Laboratory and the Rock Mechanics Laboratory at PSU, and the Mechanical Systems Design and Control Laboratory, the Rock Mechanics Laboratory and the Mine Electronic System Laboratory at WVU are equipped for fundamental research on dust generation and characterization. While the majority of respirable dust research projects fall into these two categories, dust generation and characterization and interaction of dust and lung, there are other laboratory facilities available to the Center which are unparalleled in the type of equipment and expert personnel that they contribute to the program. The Mine Particle Laboratory located at the University of Minnesota and the Diesel Engine Laboratory at Michigan Technological University are examples. They house equipment and instrumentation that is unique to these facilities. much of it having been developed specifically for dust research by the research scientists there. The dust collection equipment and the fine particles measurement, characterization and analysis apparatus are essential to research in the areas of dust collection, particle characterization and diesel particulates. In addition to university laboratories, the research facilities of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are available to the Center through its relationship With West Virginia University."

Summary Cost models have, long been confined to the accumulation and analysis of static-data.. While historical and time study data are valuable for control of existing operations, for new systems and equipment, and for projections, they need to be adjusted or modified. The availability of computer-oriented systems simulators provide yet another method for costing these systems and equipment. This investigation has introduced a concept whereby continuous, variable data can be assimilated and analyzed through the combination of an economic analysis model, which includes a direct costing capability, with a systems simulator. This tandem operation permits increased flexibility and greater atten¬tion to detail in the evaluation of mining systems. The direct costing process is carried throughout the majority of the model operations. Labor and capital costs may be computed directly, even in the absence of the systems simulator, while operating costs re¬quire input parameters, at present, from the subsystems of the Master Design Simulator. Since the costs computed are based on the perfor¬mance of each individual machine unit, the model may be used to evaluate equipment compatibility, system interaction at the mining face, and the effect of system elements on total mining costs. Additional applications of the cost model include the following: 1. Complete mining systems may be evaluated, over their economic life, to determine the feasibility of a profitable operation. 2. Costs associated with mining various segments of the coal deposit may be computed as a guide to planning the mine layout and scheduling the sequence of operations or acquisition of new

Two previous reports Lave been issued by the Bureau of Mines on consumption of oils and other reagents used to flotation - namely, "Statement of Flotation Oils," by O. C. Ralston, issued in 1913, and Serial No. 2203, "Consumption of Reagents Used in Flotation," by Thomas Varley, for the year 1919, issued in January, 1921.

Throughout the Appalachian Mountains there are dikes of coarse granite or pegmatite, which were intruded into other rocks. These pegmatite dikes contain feldspar, quartz, white mica (muscovite), black mica (biotite), and other minerals, such as beryl, garnet, and tourmaline. The investigation here reported has to do only with the dikes of the southern Appalachian region, in which the abundance of each mineral is as in the order given above. The pegmatites of this region are in every stage of alteration from those in which the feldspar is fresh to those in which the feldspar has decomposed to kaolin. The muscovite (white mica) shows no evidence of alteration, although most of the other associated minerals show traces of disintegration where the feldspar is completely kao- linized. At many places mining for mica has been done in dikes in which the feldspar is completely kaolinized, though the only evi- dences of disintegration in the mica are clay stains which are some- times noted between the outside lamina. Mining in these pegmatite dikes antedates history, traces of prehis- toric workings and some crude mining implements of stone having been unearthed by recent operations. The prehistoric mining is generally supposed to have been for mica, although investigations fail to show that the aborigines put the mica obtained to any par- ticular use except for ornaments, a few mica ornaments having been found in mounds in this region. The search for kaolin or semikaolinized feldspar is a plausible ex- planation of these prehistoric workings; all of them were in pegmatite that is more or less altered, and seemingly stopped only when the pegmatite became too hard to permit working with crude stone im- plements. The dumps do not represent the amount of material that one would expect, from their extent, the workings to have produced. During the period of 10 years from January 1, 1908, to January 1, 1918, approximately 12,850,000 barrels of oil and 5,024,506,000 cubic feet of gas were destroyed by fire in the United States, entailing a total estimated property loss of $25,254,200. During this period 503 fires were reported. As is shown in Plates I and II, 310 of these fires were caused by lightning and 193 by all other causes. The losses from the fires caused by lightning were estimated to be $11, 148,000, and from those due to all other causes $14,106,200. Directly and indirectly, the fires resulted in the deaths of nearly 150 persons and were responsible for almost as many more being permanently disabled. For the past three years the Bureau of Mines has been conducting investigations to determine the nature and the specific causes of these fires, with a view to suggesting means whereby they may be suc- cessfully combatted and, in some places, perhaps eliminated entirely. As the subject of oil and gas fires is necessarily broad, no attempt is made in this bulletin to treat it exhaustively; rather the bulletin aims to point out what has been done by operators in the past, and to describe various fire-prevention methods and fire-fighting appa- ratus which are being used or adopted by many of the larger oil companies. These methods and apparatus, it is believed, if uni- versally employed by operators, will largely decrease the present enormous annual losses. In the discussion of oil-well fires, the methods used in extinguishing several of the larger and more perplexing ones are described. As the right procedure for extinguishing any oil-well fire must be de- termined largely by local conditions, it is not probable that all of the methods used at some one fire, as described, will be applicable to a future fire. However, the operator, from these descriptions, may at least gain suggestions that will greatly assist him in fighting similar fires.

Contour maps, useful in mineral industries, for example, in analysis of trends in mineralization, may be constructed through statistical methods of regression analysis programed for an electronic computer, For many applica­tions, the resulting maps are more useful and objective than conventional contour maps that are necessarily subjective because they are drawn by hand methods. In principle, an equation is found that fits a quadratic surface to observed elevations of points referred to a datum plane, The quadratic sur­face, represented by a contour map may take the form of a ridge, valley, dome, or basin, Once an equation has been derived, its coefficients may be used to construct a contour map--showing lines of equal value that are derived from the original observed data points by the averaging process of fitting the quadratic surface. Methods employed are illustrated by an example analysis, based on data from a large vein of the Fresnillo mine, Zacatecas, Mexico. Computer programs to implement the methods are described in an appendix,

This report describes the results of a measurement and analysis program to characterize wireless radio transmission in metal/non-metal mines over a wide frequency range from 0.2 - 1000 MHz and over a variety of mine environments. Six mines were chosen based on the relative economic significance of their product to the U.S. economy. Mine types include oil shale, uranium, potash, lead/zinc, copper, and silver. Particular mines were chosen so that the group would embody the most important mining techniques. The results show that transmission at medium frequencies are optimum for wireless mine communications, in agreement with extensive testing previously performed by the authors in coal mines, and that mine-wide wireless systems are feasible with a minimum requirement for new dedicated wiring. At least one need for such a wireless system was identified in each mine visited.

The present status of the National Bureau of Standards program is that many magnetic tapes of analog data have been recorded in four major mines. Each mine uses different types of equipment. In addition, some surface measurements of noise have been made at two additional mines. Two types of recordings have been made: (1) broadband measurements for spectral plots and (2) narrowband measurements for amplitude probability density (APD) plots. Only data from one mine (Robena #4) has been processed and was, presented at this workshop. The short-term goals are: (1) finish processing data from the other mines, (2) establish or reduce measurement system uncertainties, (3) put Robella report into final form for distribution, and (4) hold a review to determine what has been done, to distribute and to interpret the preliminary data, and to determine what still needs to be done. Long-term goals are: (1) complete final reports on each of the mine trips, (2) establish techniques for predicting noise in mines already visited and establish uncertainty bounds for these predictions, and (3) establish techniques for predicting noise in mines that have not been visited (but that use similar equipment to those visited) and also establish uncertainty bounds for these predictions. Specific factors or formats to be presented include: (A) For underground broadband measurements: 1. 300 Hz to 100 kHz spectral plots 2. 300 Hz to 384 kHz spectral plots 3. 300 Hz to 192 kHz spectral plots 4. 300 Hz to 6kHz (subject to change to 3 or 12 kHz) spectral plots (B) For surface broadband measurements: 1. 300 Hz to 6 kHz (or 12 kHz) spectral plots 2. 300 Hz to 3 kHz spectral plots (C) For underground narrowband measurements : 1. The objective was to develop a Program Plan of analytical studies and tests for determining (1) the optimum installation tension of a coal mine roof bolt, (2) the most valid bolt support theory or theories, and (3) the most valid roof failure theory or theories. On this basis a comprehensive literature search was made and significant material dealing with coal mine roof behavior, roof bolting and roof support was collected, reviewed, classified and analyzed. Emphasis was given to the influence of rock reinforcement on the control of deformation, stress field modification and mine roof stability. An assessment was made of the effect of various parameters including bolt tension, bolt pattern and time of installation, on the effectiveness of rock reinforcement systems, and equations developed for bolt tension as a function of these parameters, and rock properties. From these studies, a major program plan of tests and studies was developed for verifying and validating the most tenable theories of roof behavior and roof support and for determining optimum bolt installation tension.

This report describes the results and conclusions of the further development of a lightweight probe drill for use in anthracite mines. Improvements to the drill previously developed under Contract H0282044 were made and tested at an Eastern Pennsylvania mine. These improvements were: 1. Better hole cleaning due to the development of an air-water mist flushing system. 2. The application of roof drill bits to allow drilling through rock seams and lenses. 3. The development of a quick coupling drill system which reduced total steel change time. 4. Adaptation of a swivel to the drill anchoring system which greatly reduced set-up time between holes. With these improvements the probe drill demonstrated its ability to drill the required 11 holes in one shift. It also gained miner acceptance as a viable underground working tool. The probe drill proved to meet all of the design requirements of portability, low weight drilling controllability, structural integrity and reliability. In addition to its ability to drill the required probe pattern, the probe drill has the capability of drilling long holes. By drilling several holes over 80 feet deep the probe drill has demonstrated a potential for use in robbing pillars and for methane drainage.

This publication was written in response to numerous requests for information about the Federal Bureau of Mines' "Demonstrated Lecture on Flame Propagation and Permissible and Explosion-Proof Electrical Equipment." The requests came principally from: (1) Persons wanting to know more about the demonstration before requesting it for groups they represented; (2) persons wishing advance information to help publicize a meeting where the demonstration was to be given; and (3) members of audiences desiring something to help them remember the salient points, facts, and figures presented during the lecture and demonstration. The purpose of the demonstration that accompanies the lecture is to show: (1) Variations in flame speed and pressure at various percentages of flammable gas within the flammable range; (2) effect of flame speed on the "pressure piling" within the area confining the mixture; and (3) the application of flame speed and pressure piling to the combustion of surrounding gas and to the design and maintenance of electrical equipment used in hazardous locations.

Provide a means of recovering precious metal values from finely ground tailing materials. Approach Determine the procedures needed for agglomerating the finely ground material for subsequent heap-leach cyanidation of the precious-metal-bearing tailings. Applying Agglomeration/Heap-Leaching to Fine Tailings Agglomeration technology was developed by the Bureau of Mines to provide cost-effective recovery of precious metal values though better heap leaching of clayey or low-grade ores. While many precious metal producers have adopted this technology to reclaim precious metals from crushed ores and wastes, other operations have experienced problems in using the heap leaching technique effectively on piles of fine tailings. In contrast to the coarser ore and waste material, most tailings piles contain more than 50 percent minus 200 mesh materials with no coarse material. Fine particles and clays present in the pile can impede 8 uniform flow of the leaching solution through the heap, thus preventing efficient and cost-effective precious metals recovery.
