Dual energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) sorting is a recent development in the range of sensor-based sorting technologies available today. DE-XRT is particularly suitable for dry coarse coal beneficiation in the size range -120 mm +12 mm. In this paper, we describe the technology and show the results of a number of test runs conducted on different types of coal from the USA and South Africa. The results have shown that DE-XRT is an effective technology not only for deshaling of coal and removing pyritic sulphur but also for separating coal and torbanite. The use of dry deshaling methods will be more important as water availability becomes a greater concern. DE-XRT is one such technology which will be incorporated in future dry coal processing plants.

Dr H. J. van Eck (Honorary Life Member): "Mr President, I regard it as a signal honour that I was invited to address the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on its 75th Anniversary. I also wish to add my congratulations and good wishes to the many you have already received on this memorable occasion. Seventy-five years is indeed a good age and the achievements of your Institute certainly justify this special celebration. South Africa owes her present prosperity largely to the technological ability and determination of her own people. Members of the Institute contributed in large measure to this great development of our country and through the years have upheld their high reputation for scientific integrity, dynamic enterprise and dedicated service. It was their knowledge which provided the key to unlocking the mineral wealth which lay dormant for countless ages. The history of world mining dates back many centuries. We know of the mercury mines of Spain, the tin mines of Cornwall and the zinc mines of Poland, but it was not until colonization of the western hemisphere started in about 1500 that mining of any consequence began in North America. It is true that the peoples of South America and Mexico had accumulated wealth out of gold and silver, but industrialized mining was not a feature of these agrarian cultures. The mining wealth that eventually developed in North America was based on advances in the technology of processing minerals and served as an incentive to people in other new countries. Big mines were opened elsewhere in the world. From Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Rhodesia, Australia, Burma and India, to name but a few, there has been a steadily increasing production of an expanding range of minerals and metals. By the middle of the 20th century the trend was to increase the production and use of such comparatively uncommon metals as cobalt, nickel, titanium, and others, and a great mining rush started to search for, and develop, the deposits of uranium, and related radio-active minerals. It is worth pausing a few minutes to reflect that most of early mining was based on the recovery of virgin metals like gold and silver or easily treated high grade ores of copper, tin and zinc. Today, much of this type of mining would be regarded as picking the eyes out of the mine. With the development of improved ore separating, ore concentration and recovery processes, we developed into bulk mining and bulk treatment and in South Africa we have some very big mines, also outside the gold mining industry at Phalaborwa, for instance. Mining techniques are applied which compare with the best in the world. These large mines could only develop because of the perfection of new concentrating techniques and, of course, because of the development of markets. We have mentioned nickel and cobalt. These names were given to those mischievous mining sprites called nickels and kobolds to whom the suspicious miners ascribed their inability to smelt copper from copper nickel or arsenious copper ores. In South Africa, the presence of minerals was known to the modern Western world as far back as 1497 when Vasco da Gama found the native 'strandlopers' at the St. Helena Bay wearing copper rings. In 1669, after the British East India Company had formed their settlement, they employed miners and assayers in prospecting for minerals and in 1685 found traces of copper in the copper mountain of Namaqualand where some 170 years later a rich deposit of copper was to be opened up. Stochastic methods are normally invoked / used to assist with the understanding of risks, when there is uncertainty around a particular outcome. Uncertainty implies that there is a risk that the desired outcome will not be realized. Stochastics and probability theory has long held out the promise to answering this need, but has often been maligned because of its misuse. This paper takes a critical look need for Monte Carlo simulation to project risk evaluation and highlights what is considered to be the fundamental issues that should be thoughtfully considered to avoid the abuse of this technique. The upside of avoiding the abuse of this technique will be the wider acceptance by practitioners that it is a credible technique to quantify this important aspect of valuation.

A large opencast gold mining company in Africa had just completed a feasibility study for the expansion of the operations. A traditional net present value project valuation methodology had been used that showed a very positive net present value (NPV). The project team had conducted a qualitative risk assessment that identified and logged all potential project risks and had subjectively incorporated ?risk? via the discount rate and other assumption contingencies around gold price expectations, operating parameters etc. Management requested that an independent quantitative risk modelling approach be adopted to obtain a better understanding of the impact of risk on the overall project valuation and confidence level in the final valuation. A detailed project valuation model was configured in the Carbon Modelling Technology and the stochastic modelling module used to perform the Monte Carlo simulations. Analysis of historical operational performance data relating to actual achievements versus planned and budget determined the historical variability of the underlying parameters as well as variance to budget. This was done at a detailed level for mining rates and costs, processing rate, costs and recovery, and other operational efficiency measures. External market assumptions relating to gold price, exchange rate, and inflation were modelled and the dependency between them modelled using a copula. This case study will demonstrate the approach taken to building and populating the quantitative risk model and the overall results of the Monte Carlo simulation. The final valuation demonstrated that the project had a 44 percent probability of an NPV less than zero i.e. 44 percent chance of project finance loss.

The meteorological conditions in South Africa are not conducive to the effective dispersion of air pollutants. In the light of this, and because of the magnitude, concentration, and future growth potential of the metallurgical industry, control of air pollution is essential. Methods of abatement are discussed for each branch of the metallurgical Industry, as well as for open-cast mining and bulk ore storage. Some recommendations are made regarding potentially rewarding research and development.

A new graphical method termed the ?Design Curve Diagram? (DCD) has been developed to analyse non-Newtonian pipe flow data by relating the plastic Karman number to the plastic Reynolds number. Since the plastic Karman number is directly proportional to the pressure loss gradient and the plastic Reynolds number is directly proportional to the velocity, the DCD is essentially a non-dimensional pipe flow curve. This makes the DCD conceptually easier than the commonly used Hedström-Moody diagram. While, the DCD was developed for the analysis of yield plastic fluids (e.g., Bingham plastics), it is equally applicable to Newtonian fluids.

The magnesia-carbon refractories used in the ConArc process experience severe wear as a result of the varying slag composition during the blowing phase. This work determines the basicity range in which minimum as well as maximum refractory wear was experienced by the magnesia-carbon refractories during service. In order to determine an optimum slag composition, the crucible test in an induction furnace was used. The magnesia-carbon refractory bricks were cut into cylindrical crucibles to which a synthetic slag in the form of pellets was added. The basicity (B2) of the slag was varied from 0.5 to 3. Tests were done at 1 600°C for one hour. Apart from the crucible test in an induction furnace, visual inspection and SEM analysis were also done to investigate the corrosion mechanism. FACTSage® predictions about the interaction between refractories and slag were also done. These predictions were compared to the actual results attained. It was found that the extent of corrosion by slag attack decreases as the basicity increases. The most severe corrosion of the MgO-C refractories occurred at a basicity of 0.5 whereas the optimum basicity is above 2.0. SEM analysis indicated severe slag attack at the lower basicities with no visible refractory-slag interaction at higher basicities. TheFACTSage® predictions supported most of the actual findings. Mixtures of MnO and graphite were reacted under argon at temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1425°C, and the loss in mass of the mixture was recorded continuously. The results showed that the rate of reduction of MnO increased as the temperature increased and the ratio of MnO to C decreased. The effect of the particle size of MnO and of graphite on the rate of reduction at I350°C was very small in the range 63 to 250 µm for MnO and 45 to 355 µm for graphite. The rate of reduction at I350°C was increased markedly by the addition of Na2CO2 and K2CO3, was slightly increased by the addition of Fe2O3, was unaffected by the addition of CaO, MgO, and AI2O., and was decreased by the addition of SiO2. Some CO2 was always present in the effluent gas, and this was taken as evidence that the reduction of MnO occurred by way of CO2 as an intermediate product. The activation energy of the ratecontrolling step was 57,5 kcal, and this was similar to the measured activation energy for the gasification of graphite by CO., namely, 61,S kcal per mole of graphite. A simple kinetic model was derived on the assumption that the gasification of graphite was the ratecontrolling step, and the results over the temperature range 1200 to I425°C, when plotted in the appropriate form, yielded straight lines as predicted by the model.

Lead-based alloys are used as the primary anodes for electrowinning from sulphate-based aqueous systems. Lead anode technology has evolved over the years, migrating from pure lead and lead-antimonial alloys to the present-day lead-calcium-tin alloys for copper electrowinning and leadsilver alloys for zinc electrowinning. Anode technology has also migrated from cast to rolled microstructures in search of improved mechanical properties and higher corrosion resistance. Although great strides have been made in the development of new alloys and production processes, the industry still has unresolved issues related to untimely corrosion, which limits anode life and may lead to higher contaminant levels in the metal being produced. Lead anodes corrode because of the difference in the chemical/electrochemical potential across the microstructural features of an anode. Given a very high purity material, we find that the grain boundary areas corrode significantly faster than the rest of the grain. A balance of alloying element selection and microstructural design allows the grain boundary area to be engineered, thus minimizing grain boundary corrosion. However, operational issues can lead to unexpected corrosion behaviours that we will discuss moving forward. The comments in this work, although directed toward copper electrowinning, can be extended to similar phenomena in other metals electrowon from sulphate media (i.e., zinc, nickel, cobalt, manganese). The life cycle of electrowinning anodes depends on tankhouse operating conditions and maintenance of the anodes, including cleaning and straightening. This paper will focus on the operational aspects of maximizing the utilization of lead anodes for base metals electrowinning.

Experience with Mars pumping of underground water by N. E. K. SCHUTTLER (Visitor) As the result of a planned increase in production, Vaal Reefs Exploration & Mining Company Limited increased the hoisting capacity of their existing equipment to its fullest extent and installed Mars pumps and a washing plant. The layout of the installation is described, and details are given of the modifications made to overcome its weaknesses. Plans to change the present four-stage system to a seven-stage system are outlined.

The capacity of grinding mills can be maximized by use of measurements of mill power and bearing pressures. The criterion is as follows. If the derivatives with respect to time of the power and bearing pressure signals have the same sign, the volume of the mill load is smaller than the optimum value; if they have different signs, the volume of the mill load is greater than the optimum value. Few attempts have been made to use measurements of bearing pressure in the estimation of absolute values for the parameters that define the state of the mill load (e.g, mass, volume, and dynamic angle of repose) because the bearing-pressure signal is a complex function of these and other parameters. This paper gives a mathematical model that relates bearing pressures to these parameters. The theoretical values obtained from this model are compared with experimental values, and it is concluded that the model constitutes a good description of experimental reality. If accurate measurements of the load supported by each bearing are available, the model can be used in the estimation of the mass of the load in the mill. If independent estimates of the volume of the load or the dynamic angle of repose are available, the other parameter can be estimated from measurements of the bearing loads.

This paper addresses the need for a unifying model that will permit the selection and design of optimum materials for a given wear situation. With this objective in view, the characteristics of the various forms of abrasive, adhesive, and erosive wear are described in terms of localized stress, strain, strain rate, and frictional heating. The measured performance of a variety of metallic, ceramic, and polymeric materials and coated or surface treated materials are described briefly. These results were obtained under conditions of dry-particle abrasion, abrasion in conjunction with corrosion, cavitation erosion in liquids, erosion by particles in low- and high-velocity gas streams, and erosion by particles in a liquid stream. Electron microscopy was used extensively, together with microhardness profiles, in the determination of the modes of material detachment and the underlying deformations and structural changes. As a result of the experimental work, a model based upon a critical strain to microfracture is presented. The microstructural features and materials properties that determine wear resistance are discussed.

The Minfurn is a novel carbon-regeneration furnace developed at Mintek. It combines the advantages of direct resistive heating in a vertical-tube furnace with those of continuous operation, in a furnace whose capital, operating, and maintenance costs compare favourably with those of conventional rotary kilns. After successful tests under experimental conditions on carbons containing different contaminants, a 3 kg/h unit was installed on the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant at the Klipwal Gold Mine near Piet Retief, where it has been operating at, on average, 123 per cent of its design capacity. Since the installation of the Minfurn, monthly average losses of dissolved gold of less than 0,02 p.p.m. have been maintained for several successive months for the first time since January 1989. It is also possible that the monthly average residue values have been reduced. Further improvements to the carbon circuit are possible, and the possibility of making further savings by a reduction in the carbon-throughput rate still needs to be investigated. The mathematical modeling of the furnace has progressed to the stage where the future scale-up and design of the Minfurn can be carried out by simulation of the performance of different designs, and choosing the design that yields the desired performance.

The b-solidifying g-TiAl intermetallic alloys of nominal composition Ti-48Al (binary alloy), Ti-48Al-2Nb (ternary alloy), Ti-48Al-2Nb-0.7Cr (quaternary alloy), and Ti-48Al-2Nb-0.7Cr-0.3Si (quinary alloy) (in at.%) were developed. The materials produced were tensile tested at room temperature. The as-cast microstructures and fracture surfaces of the tensile tested specimens were examined using conventional metallographic methods. Microstructural examination indicated that the alloys were comprised of lamellar structures (a2+g) embedded in columnar dendritic cores in the as-cast condition. However, the quinary alloy contained a Ti5Si3 second phase. The alloys exhibited no detectable ductility during tensile deformation, indicating the brittleness of all the materials. The fracture surfaces revealed that the alloys failed by translamellar fracture with correspondingly few cleavage facets.
