In his inaugural lecture (delivered in Afrikaans at the University of Pretoria on 16th February, 1995), Professor Dippenaar defends his doctrine, philosophy, objectives, and methodology, as was required of a newly appointed professor in the days of old. Briefly, he recounts the growth and achievements of the Department of Material Science and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Pretoria; he sketches its strategic guidelines and the obstacles encountered; he outlines the opportunities for the metallurgical industry in South Africa and the need for environmental control; and he describes how modeling techniques, together with expert systems, can aid both the industry and the community. He ends on an optimistic note, saying that his Department will continue to strive to transform adversities into opportunities, and to give its students a view of new horizons beyond the foundations laid by their teachers.

Despite its growth over the years, necessitating ever¬larger office accommodation, the Gold Fields group changed its head office address in Johannesburg only twice in 94 years. The first move was at the turn of the century, from the then select suburb of Doornfontein to the corner of Fox and Simmonds Streets. The second move was in the thirties, from that address-now the Reserve Bank building-to the well-known address of 75 Fox Street. With the advent of the first mines of the West Wits Line by the end of the thirties, 75 Fox Street proved too small, and the eastern section of the Commissioner Street side of the present head office was added on. In the fifties, when space once more became a serious problem, the old Exploration building was purchased and demolished, and the present west wing on Commissioner Street was built on the site. In the early seventies, cramped conditions again made life difficult and, despite a reorganization of the interior layouts, the need for expansion remained critical. Eventually, the adjacent Hollard Place and parking area became available, and plans for an extended new building complex could he considered. The building project was

The President: "It gives me great pleasure to call on Professor Howat to present the paper written jointly with P. R. Jochens and C. W. Wolhuter entitled, 'Utilisation of slags for the manufacture of cement.' After the presentation of the paper the President said: "Thank you, Professor Howat, for so ably introducing the paper prepared by yourself, Dr Jochens and Mr Wolhuter. Once again we are deeply indebted to you for bringing to our attention a new development in the metallurgical field, this time a technique for assessing the suitability of slags for the production of slag cement, and thereby providing a means of turning a waste material into a valuable asset. May we hope that this will lead to an end to unsightly slag dumps and, at the same time, to some conservation of our local limestone resources. Discussion within this Institute on the problems of cement manufacture, has of recent years been all too infrequent, and we thank you for bringing this interesting and important subject again to our notice. We are doubly grateful to you and your co-authors. May I now call on Dr Stutterheim, Deputy Director of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, to contribute to your paper, and to tell us something about the Conference on the Chemistry of Cement which he attended in Tokyo towards the end of last year." In February 1996 the OECD's Environment Policy Committee will commemorate its 25th anniversary with a fifth meeting at Ministerial level. Environment ministers will be taking stock of the progress made by OECD countries in protecting and managing the environment in that quarter-century, and sharing views on likely challenges and co-operative responses. Ministers can point to many important accomplishments. Scientific understanding and technological tools for establishing and monitoring risks to human health and the environment have improved dramatically since the early 1970s. All OECD countries now have in place comprehensive environmental legislation, supported by specialized institutions for policy design, implementation and enforcement. The results of these efforts are increasingly evident in the form of cleaner air and water, and improved protection of natural areas, notwithstanding the many complex problems that remain.

Personnel management has undergone a remarkable change over the course of the past ten years. Personnel departments have played an increasingly important role, which today requires highly trained people and cannot be adequately served by the lesser qualified officials of yesteryear. Changes in the mining industry that stem from the demand for skilled labour to keep pace with technological developments and the mechanization of mines today demand that emphasis should be placed on the maximum utilization of manpower. Maximum utilization of manpower calls for more scientific and effective methods of recruiting, selecting, training, and placing workers so as to offer them the best opportunities for development and promotion, which naturally ensure a minimum labour turnover and eliminate labour unrest. This can be achieved only if well-qualified and properly trained personnel administrators are prepared to accept the challenge and apply themselves purposefully by assisting line mangement with the attainment of the company's corporate objectives.

These relate to the paper entitled' A new method for the rapid float-sink analysis of coal fines' by J-P. Franzidis and M.C. Harris Womanpower In 1981 the Publicity Committee of the Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers (FSPE) decided that one way in which the engineering manpower pool could be increased would be by the introduction of womanpower to the profession. Since then, Std 9 and 10 girls have been invited to attend the engineering winterschools held annually at the various universities under the auspices of SAFUES. Coal-mining wastes The 2nd International Symposium on the Reclamation, Treatment and Utilization of Coal Mining Wastes will be held in Nottingham (England) from 7th to 11th September, 1987.

The proceedings of the Centenary Banquet that was held on Friday, 25 March 1994 at The Bal Room of The Carlton at 19:30 follow. Dr H. Scot-Russell The Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa-a forerunner of this Institute-was founded at a meeting held in Johannesburg on the 24th of March, 1894. One of the traditions established early in the life of the Society was the Annual Dinner, which became a major event in Johannesburg's social calendar. It was always attended by people of stature in the industry and in the community, and was usually addressed by a high-ranking Government figure. We are delighted that, on this one hundredth birthday of the Institute, we have been able to continue the tradition. I welcome you, Mr State President, and your charming wife, and we look forward to hearing your address later this evening.

The Third International Conference on Coal Research was held in Sydney, Australia, in October 1976. The papers and proceedings of the Conference will be published in Australia on behalf of the International Committee for Coal Research in April 1977. The papers deal with the economics and practicability of coal conversion, coal winning, resources assessment, safety and dust, and coal and power generation, together with an appreciation of coal potential by the deputy chairman of the U.K. National Coal Board. Copies of the report are available to organizations within member countries of ICCR at a cost of 35 dollars (Australian), including postage, by application to the Executive Officer, Third ICCR, Box 3842 GPO Sydney, Australia 2001. Drafts should be in Australian currency payable to Third International Conference on Coal Research.

Another very successful evening meeting was organized by the Johannesburg Branch of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on 20th November, 1990, when Mr R.D. MacPherson, General Manager of Richards Bay Minerals, gave a presentation on the Richards Bay operations. The function was held in the Ballroom of the Johannesburg Country Club, and the very high attendance (some 250 people) was indeed a reflection of the high profile of the subject mater. It was also a fitting reward for the efforts of Mr MacPherson and his team, who spent a considerable amount of time and effort traveling the country to present 'the other side of the story'.

The conference was divided into a total of 12 different sessions. Apart from the keynote addresses, the papers covered many aspects of open-pit mining, from mine design and blasting techniques to mining operations and equipment, as well as water management and rehabilitation. A number of case studies were also presented. Most of the 68 papers originated from Australia; however, presentations were also made by representatives from Chile, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and South Africa. The keynote papers dealt with subjects such as the economics of open pits, project planning of a new large copper deposit, management principles, and rehabilitation strategies.

On Friday, 6th June, 1986, an SAIMM party of32 set out at 06h30 for a tour of Duvha Opencast Colliery, Lesedi Village, and Duvha Power Station-all situated just outside Witbank. Duvha Colliery On arrival at the mine, the party was met by Mr. Colin Kolver, Assistant General Manager, and the guides for the morning. After refreshments had been served, Mr. MacDonald, General Manager, welcomed the tour, and a series of slides on the opencast mine and Lesedi Village were shown.

Frank Michael Gowar Egerton was educated at Jeppe High School for Boys and the University of the Witwatersrand, both in Johannesburg. He holds a B.Sc. degree in mining engineering, and has attended numerous courses on management, finance, and industrial relations. In the Executive Development Programme run by the University's Business School in 1981, he was voted the student who had made the greatest contribution to the programme.

The paper describes how a multivariable control scheme was developed and implemented for the run-of-mine milling circuit at a gold mine belonging to Vaal Reefs Exploration & Mining Company Limited. The key variables that are controlled are slurry level in the sump, mass of material in the mil, and product size. The control scheme has resulted in reliable control of the dynamics of the plant, and has provided a good basis for the optimization of plant operation by the selection of suitable set Points.

An International Ferro-alloys Congress, arranged by the Ferro Alloy Producers' Association of South Africa, the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the National Institute for Metallurgy, will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in April 1974. The technical programme, occupying five days, will cover the following topics in relation to all ferro-alloys: 1. Burden preparation, blending, pelletization, handling, reducing agents. 2. Electric smelting furnaces-design, operation, management,- smelting optimization, shop practice, refractories. 3. Mineralogy, reduction behaviour, smelting reactions, slags. 4. Automation, Pollution control. 5. Applications, trends in comsumption, trends in composition specifications. There will be no parallel sessions. Papers in the above topics are invited; review papers will also be welcome. Proposed titles and abstracts in not more than 200 words should be submitted before the 30th of November, 1972, to The Chairman, Programme Committee, INFACON 74, Private Bag 7, AUCKLAND PARK, South Africa. The abstracts will be considered during January 1973, and papers accepted for the Congress must be submitted in final form before the 31st of July, 1973. The proceedings of the Congress will be published as a special volume. There will be a series of post-Congress tours to ferroalloy plants and other places of both technical and scenic interest. A full ladies' programme will be arranged. Sedimentary Ores-Ancient and Modern (Revised), edited by C. H. James. Proceedings of the 15th Inter-University Geological Congress. University of Leicester, December, 1967. Postage and packing, 3s. 6d. This volume should be of interest to economic geologists and students in this field. A number of illustrated papers on the genesis of ores in sediments are presented; the authors include experts such as Prof G. C. Amstutz, Dr K. C. Dunham, Prof D. Williams and W. G. GarIick. The papers deal mainly with sulphide deposits, but the late Prof J. H. Taylor's contribution concerns ores of iron and manganese. Brief references to the Witwatersrand ores represent the only discussion of South African deposits. With the notable exception of W. G. Garlick's paper on Zambian copper deposits, the Abstracts given are inadequate, necessitating thorough reading of the papers to extract the important matter.

SYNOPSIS The most economic exploitation of South African coal resources requires sustained study of the balance between known resources and the predicted rate of consumption, against the background of the development of other sources of energy in South Africa and relevant developments elsewhere in the world. A number of the major issues which would arise in such a study are discussed, including the need for a standardized South African definition for coal resources, the merits of sectoral forecasts of consumption compared with global forecasts, the encouragement of a higher recovery from reserves, and the development of an export market for South African coal.
