In the selective flocculation process, polymers with specific functional groups can yield highly selective adsorption and, therefore, high separation efficiency. Selectivity in polymer adsorption may also be attained by specific additives that inhibit the adsorption of the flocculant on some solid surfaces but not on others. Generally, these additives have a different chemical nature than the flocculant. In this study, the lower molecular weight fraction of the flocculant was successfully evaluated as a site blocking agent, leading to higher separation efficiency than obtained otherwise.

Engineering programs usually do not provide sufficient opportunities for students to develop written communication skills. The responsibility for developing those skills is frequently delegated to the humanities faculty, who in a single technical writing course are supposed to transform engineering students into proficient communicators. A general template which was developed for report writing in our senior level capstone design courses is discussed. Students have improved their writing skills by using the template. The writing assignments have provided the students the opportunity to write and revise more technical reports that communicate their design.

Introduction The English word "sedimentation" is derived from the Latin verb "sedere" meaning to sink down. As a mineral processing unit operation, sedimenta¬tion has been defined as the separation of a suspension into a supernatant clear fluid and rather dense slurry containing a higher concentration of solid (Brown, G.G. 1960). Sedimen¬tation has been historically subdivided into thickening, which has the primary purpose of increasing the solids content of one of the thickener prod¬ucts relative to the feed stream, and clarification, which has the primary purpose of removing solids from the feed stream to produce a product essentially free from particu¬late matter. There is no absolutely precise distinction between these subdivisions and in certain applica¬tions, both objectives can be accom¬plished. Major Design Factors The capacity of conventional metal¬lurgical sedimentation devices is a function of slurry throughput and its attendant settling rate. Important factors, recognized by early investigators (Taggart, 1972), which influence the settling rate of a given metallur¬gical slurry include: Feed dilution or solids-liquid weight ratio Size and shape of the particulate solids Specific gravity differential between the solids and liquid phases Presence of electrolytes and/or flocculants Pulp viscosity Slurry temperature In addition to the foregoing histor¬ical factors, recent investigators have noted (Pearse, M.J., 1977) that other parameters which may have an influence upon settling rate and, thereby, thickener performance include: Method of flocculant application Particle size distribution Particulate wetting characteristics Feeding arrangements Rake speed and type Existence of convection currents Wind disturbance Evaporation All of the above factors should be examined and the effect upon thick¬ener performance brought about by manipulating the factor over the expected operating range should be determined if performance optimization is desired.

Literature is rather abundant on the topic of steady-state network analysis programs. Many versions exist, some of them have real extended facilities such as full graphical manipulation, fire simulation in motion, etc. These programs are certainly of great help to any ventilation planning and often assist the ventilation engineer in his operational decision making. However, what ever the efficiency of the calculation algorithms might be, their weak point still is the overall validity of the model. This numerical model, apart from maybe the questionable application of some physical laws, depends directly on the quality of the data used to identify its most influencing parameters such as the passive (resistance) or active (fan) characteristic of each of the branches in the network. Considering the non-linear character of the problem and the great number of variables involved, finding the closest numerical model of a real mine ventilation network is without any doubt a very difficult problem. This problem, often referred to as the parameter adjustment problem, is in almost every practical case solved on an experimental and "feeling" basis. Only a few papers put forward a mathematical solution based on a least square approach as the best fit criterion. The aim of this paper is to examine the possibility to apply the well-known simplex method to this problem. The performance of this method and its capability to reach the global optimum which corresponds to the best fit is discussed and compared to that of other methods.

Today, man is able to probe space because of technological advancements including the ability to control certain combustion reactions very precisely. The recent adjustment of the attitude of Skylab by radio command from earth is an excellent example of such control. It is strange, and indeed unfortunate, that very little is known about the mechanism of combustion of pulverized coal, the primary fuel for rotary kilns. The selection of a coal for direct pulverized firing of a rotary lime kiln may be determined by trial and error, persistence of sales personnel, proximate analyses, grindability, or apparent BTU cost. Occasionally, the only question asked is, "How much lime will it make?" To study the behavior of a particle of coal in the combustion stream of a rotary kiln is most difficult. We must, therefore, discuss the general mechanism of combustion of pulverized coal, and relate this mechanism to the selection of a proper coal for a rotary kiln. The classic three T's -time, temperature, turbulence -must be enlarged upon for a better understanding of the problem. Pulverized coal occupies only 0.01 per cent of the volume of air required for its combustion. This mixture behaves like a gas and the general laws governing the movement of solid particles in gasses are in effect. The differential velocity between air and coal particles depends on forced and natural convection, diffusion, and the length of time each particle is in the combustion space. As a particle of coal absorbs heat from its surroundings, it begins to give off volatiles". These gasses ignite as their kindling temperature is reached, and burn readily because of the excess oxygen immediately available. Combustion proceeds at this stage by the outward diffusion of gas from the coal particle into the surrounding oxygen-rich envelope. We could say combustion at this stage represents a small coal particle surrounded by an envelope of volatiles burning at their point of contact with sufficient oxygen. This release or expulsion of gasses from the coal may result in exfoliation or disintegration of the coal particle. If this occurs, and it is desirable that it should, it will accelerate the final stages of combustion. The escape of volatile material from the particle of coal and its subsequent combustion will cause increased turbulence around that individual particle. Ignition is maintained by radiation from gasses and solids in the combustion system, and most importantly, re-radiation from the kiln refractories and the process load.

Conveyor systems are an essential part of many material movements in all conceivable areas of application. They are used to transport goods in raw materials extraction, agriculture, and even articles for daily use. In the process, not only distances of several kilometers but also differences in altitude of several hundred meters are bridged. The layout of the conveyor usually follows the topography at the respective installation site. Particularly in the case of large height differences, safety devices must be provided to prevent uncontrolled movement. Backstops can take over this task in predominantly ascending overland conveyors and are used either as a primary or as a secondary safety system in conjunction with a service brake. They are always used when the system comes to an unplanned standstill, whether due to a power failure, an emergency stop or a defect. When designing backstops, it must be ensured in any case that all conceivable circumstances are taken into account so that failure is ruled out without the product being unnecessarily large in size. Various safety factors are applied, some of which are even prescribed by authorities. One example is the Australian standard on machine safety for bulk material belt conveyors (AS/NZS 4024). This stipulates a redundant acceleration safety device that can absorb at least 150% of the maximum load. The midwestern area referred to is the Illinois basin. The coals presently worked are mainly the No. 5 and No. 6 coal seams which vary in thickness from five to eleven feet. Present average of the more important No. 6 id about nine feet. The coal can vary considerably in toughness within the same mine with some coal perhaps rashing very easily and other coal being extremely difficult to cut. Top is generally well laminated shales with some fortunate areas having limestone roof. There are local areas with troublesome top of poorly laminated shales, shale with slickensides and shale intermingled with small partings and traces of coal. The bottoms are generally one to three feet of clay which softens readily on exposure to moisture. The mines are dry although some water is released and collects from rapid penetration of the seam by continuous miners. However, there are locally wet areas. Most of this material refers to mines of the Freeman Coal Mining Corporation. The mining operations written about are underground mines in southern and central Illinois.

The percent ash in a coal blend is equal to the weighted average of the ash contents of the component coals. If the raw coals differ in washability characteristics, the total yield may be maximized by washing the component coals to different quality levels. A mathematical basis for blend maximization is developed and a computer program is described The program determines the component weights that maximize the yield, while meeting an individual coal-quality specification. The procedure is directly applicable to linear parameters of grade quality such as percent ash, percent sulfur and the calorific value. A transformation of variables permits program execution to meet a sulfur-compliance specification. Blends may consist of any number of component coals.

"The International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) held its 42nd General Assembly along with the 2016 World Tunnel Congress (WTC) April 22-28 in San Francisco, CA. The event was co-organized by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA). This was the first time the event has been held in the United States in 20 years.As cities demonstrate strong needs in tunnels and underground spaces for public transportation, subway stations, hydroelectric infrastructures and other underground infrastructure needs, the WTC 2016 provided the 2,319 attendees from around the world a unique occasion to discover the latest state-of-the art innovations in urban planning and underground construction projects in the United States and worldwide.The Congress, held in lieu of the UCA’s North American Tunneling Conference, included an exhibit that attracted 226 exhibitors in 298 booths. The exhibit had on display the latest in technical equipment and services from some of the largest and best companies in the international tunneling industry. The exhibit hall was also the place where participants were able to interact with the authors of the 168 posters and receive answers to various topics directly concerning civil engineers: innovative procurement processes, cost and risk management, contractual methods, BIM technologies and examples of innovative underground infrastructures built worldwide. And the technical program included 353 technical presentations – 185 podium and 168 posters.What is ITA?ITA-AITES is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that promotes greater use of underground space as a key instrument in sustainable development. Conditioning, in the conventional sense, means providing sufficient agitation and contact time for the reagents to react with the minerals in the ground ore. High intensity conditioning (HIC) on the other hand, as described in this paper, recognizes the need to exceed this minimum power input over a suitable length of time to induce aggregation of the finest size fraction. Time alone is not sufficient to achieve aggregation. The threshold minimum power input, kW/m3, depends on many surface properties of the fine particles and can vary considerably. In addition, the mechanical aspects and the chemical conditions must be matched to achieve good aggregation. Treatment of complex sulphide ores, requiring fine grinding for liberation, offers a large field for the application of HIC. Improved flotation rates and enhanced selectivity are some of the benefits that can be expected. This unit operation has now reached the level of commercial application. Lakefield Research considered HIC not from a fundamental point of view but as a means of solving difficult mineral processing situations arising in actual operating plants. This paper summarizes the effects of the various chemical reagent combinations that had been applied to promote faster, more selective flotation, higher mineral recoveries and cleaner separations, using HIC.

"INTRODUCTION The Lisbon Valley Mining Co LLC (LVMC) operates the Lisbon Valley Mine located in SE Utah. The mine includes 3 open pits, 150-acre heap leach pad, and solvent extraction electro winning plant (SX/EW). Approximately 25MM tons of ore has been mined since 2005. The ore is stacked on the leach pad to an average height of 55 feet and occurs as a blend of crushed material (minus 2”) and run-of-mine (minus 24”). The host rocks include Dakota and Burro Canyon Sandstones. Copper occurs finely disseminated in this material at an average grade of 0.46%. Minerology is 63% sulfide, 27% oxide, and 10% insoluble. Total inventory mined through 2016 is approximately 230 MM lbs. METALLURGICAL CONSTRAINTS Copper production is constrained by areas of low permeability ore and geochemical issues, including acid consumption. The intrinsic permeability the ore ranges from 10-2 to 1 Darcy. This permeability does not permit sufficient aeration by natural convection, therefore oxygen transport is largely limited to the mass of oxygen that can remain dissolved in leachates. As a result, greater than 50MM lbs of copper remains in inventory and occurs secondary sulfides, including chalcocite, covellite, and bornite. BIOLEACHING FUNDAMENTALS Due to the higher activation energies of secondary sulfides, notably covellite and bornite, a strong oxidant is needed to remove an electron from the metal-sulfide lattice and release the copper cation into the sulfate solution. This process occurs most efficiently using the strong oxidant ferric iron (Fe3+). Ferrous iron can be oxidized to ferric iron by oxygen via chemical oxidation or biologically; which was measured to occur 500,000 times faster when using microbes versus oxygen.1 The microbes that oxidize ferrous iron (Fe2+) to ferric iron are naturally abundant and will develop biomass when appropriate conditions and nutrients present themselves. Most nutrients are provided by the ore/irrigation (P,N,Mg, Ca & Fe2+) while the others (O2 and CO2) are provided by air. In most cases, oxygen transfer is the rate limiting step during copper sulfide leaching. 1 Lacey & Lawson 1970 FORCED AERATION SYSTEM DESIGN This paper describes LVMC’s efforts to bioleach the remaining inventory by forced aeration. Two basic aeration systems were installed and tested including vertical wells and horizontal piping. Vertical System The vertical system was installed using the mine’s blast hole drilling rig. Wells were constructed using 4” high-density polyethylene (HDPE) connected to 4” polyvinyl chloride (PVC) screens similar to conventional bioventing wells. Ore samples were collected at each well location to characterize the spatial distribution of the remaining inventory along with fines (minus 200 sieve), pH (acid consumption), and iron. A block model of each analyte was developed and mapped in 3D."

San Juan which owns and charters vessels for the bulk ocean transportation of iron ore, petroleum products, coking coal, slurry, salt and other commodities.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed engineering and economic analyses on 130 domestic phosphate mines and deposits, all containing demonstrated resources, of which 73 are in the Southeastern states of Florida and North Carolina, to determine the domestic availability of phosphate rock. Of the total domestic resources studied (6.4 billion tons of recoverable rock) over 60 percent is found in these two Southeastern states. At an estimated cost of $30 per ton, in January 1981 dollars, approximately 1 billion tons of rock is potentially recoverable from Southeastern deposits, increasing to 3 billion tons at $45. In addition, there is nearly 6 billion tons of recoverable rock at the inferred level (some presently unmineable) in Florida and Georgia.

Gravity separation techniques were used in the early years to extract native metal nuggets and flakes from placer gold deposits. This was relatively easy for visible metal grains. As the size of the grain becomes smaller traditional gravity separation techniques become inadequate to recover native gold. Cyanidation was invented as a solution to the problem. According to it, gold and other precious metals are dissolved in water by sodium cyanide. The result was a drastic increase of world gold production but at the same time environmental issues were raised. In Greece gold mining has become equivalent with the absolute destruction of the environment and is under extinction. In the last years a new type of gravity equipment have been produced which create a gravitational field up to 200 G and can separate gold from gangue minerals at sizes below 50 µm. The strong gravitational field is created by centrifugal forces and the separation occurs in a fluidized bed, formed by water flow. Accumulations of finely disseminated native gold are found in the sedimentary sequence of the Flysch of the Ionian Zone. The main gold minerals are gold and electrum present as free metal flakes and micro nuggets in the size range between 5-250 µm. Test work, using the Falcon SB40 centrifugal concentrator, at the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering at the Technical University of Crete, has shown that this particular type of gold ore can be processed by gravitational methods that require no reagents and are environmentally safe.

The Sherwood Mine is being monitored to determine the nature and extent of changes in the mine and its environs which result from the closing and the cessation of pumping. Of particular interest was the possibility of piping-induced subsidence occurring as the mine flooded. Previous experience in the district indicated that this possibility was very real. A monitoring system, including acoustic sensors, extensometers, surface subsidence monuments, and ground water observation wells was installed in July 1978, just prior to the mine closing. Late in 1979, three piping-induced subsidence events occurred. The monitored data, and related laboratory studies are being applied to a quantitative description of piping-induced subsidence.

Limestone and Dolomite quarries located near Salto-De-Pirapora, Arroia Grande Gaucho, Conde Francisco and Candioita probably represent the closest, major sources of high quality lime and cement grade carbonate rocks to the major population center of Sao Paulo Brazil. The nearest major city to most of the limestone - dolomite sources is Sorocaba and Palma. All of the mining properties visited during this study are located in the state of Rio Grande Do Sul at approximately -32 degrees south latitude and -52 degrees west longitude, southwest of the major port city of Porto Alegre.

As Assistant Director for Program Support for the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM), a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Interior, I am responsible for the regulatory and abandoned mine land programs under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977, which governs the environmental impacts of coal mining. My perspective is influenced by my current position and my previous positions in government and private industry. Sustainability is a cooperative effort of many parties and can only be achieved if each assumes their responsibilities for making it happen. I will highlight some of my thoughts on the role of government in achieving sustainability in the mining arena.

In response to a request from the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the Bureau of Mines has recently completed a respirable dust survey of 18 U.S. coal preparation plants. Of these, three were essentially free of dust problems. Respirable dust exposure of workers in the remaining plants depended on the time spent in the dusty areas. In five of the plants surveyed, Bureau tests showed that in some areas worker exposures could exceed Federal dust limits in less than 2 hours.
