Tailings dams are large-scale earth-fill embankments that are designed to contain mining wastes from ore dressing plants. Most commonly tailings dams are constructed in stages in order to keep up with the increasing volume of mine tailings. Staged construction using various methods (like up-stream, down-stream, and centerline) is generally considered as a very effective way to construct this kind of embankments. The present study is devoted to the investigation of the behavior and the stability of these geostructures under static conditions. In order to accomplish this task, elaborate two-dimensional numerical models are examined, utilizing the geotechnical finite-element code PLAXIS. Numerical analyses are conducted for all three types of tailings dams in order to obtain the potential modes of failure, while the corresponding factors of safety are determined by the shear strength reduction technique.

Six-fold, high-resolution, compressional-wave seismic data were acquired across a coal mining property in the Meigs County study area, southeastern Ohio, with a view to differentiating the Clarion Coal Member and a truncating channel sandstone prior to longwall mining without costly drilling. The seismic technique, as is illustrated by our example data, was successfully used to map those areas where the coal is present, as well as those places where it was eroded by incising fluvial streams. Our results demonstrate that the seismic reflection method, using an engineering seismograph, can be a cost-effective way to define discontinuities associated with coal seams.

Since man began beneficiating ores, a limited number of factors influenced the type of treatment. The ore itself has always been a factor. The first form of concentration was probably hand sorting, and the grade of concentrate and recovery had to be considered from the start. The cost of labor as a factor in mill design did not attain importance until the period following World War I. Power was one of the cheapest commodities available, and consequently power consumption was ignored. That no longer holds true. The present work does nothing to simplify the work of the metallurgist, or designer. On the contrary it adds another element to the design considerations. And while this report concentrates on power consumption, the mill designer must take the other factors into account as well. This study is based on a compilation of data supplied by a number of Western United States copper operations, as well as information from equipment manufacturers. Although its conclusiones apply to other minerals and geographic areas, the information is more precise, when applied to similar ores. The discussion has been divided into sections covering crushing, grinding, and flotation as these are the principal power consuming functions.

Changes in the ore types available and increased environmental concern have created a demand for an alternative technology to cyanide for the extraction of gold from ore. Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (Great Lakes) believes that halogen chemistry, in particular bromine chemistry, is the best available alternative to cyanide for gold extraction. Great Lakes is a Fortune 500 chemical company with sales of approximately one billion dollars per year. Great Lakes extracts elemental bromine from naturally occurring brines in Southern Arkansas. Great Lakes has developed a family of proprietary bromine compounds to aid in the extraction of gold. In addition to proprietary bromine compounds for gold extraction, Great Lakes has developed a method of recycling bromide ion in the leach circuit. Various recovery methods, including ion exchange and solvent , extraction are currently being studied.

Since 1993, Newmont has been actively growing through the development of three major foreign mining operations with a fourth under construction. The first project, Yanacocha in Peru began operating in October 1993 at a time when political and business risk in that country was considered high. In 1995, Newmont began operating the Muruntau Joint Venture in Uzbekistan, the first of its kind in the CIS. In early 1996, Newmont started operating the Minahasa mine in Indonesia. Now, in early 1997, Newmont is undertaking the construction of a $1.9 billion project in Indonesia and is completing a feasibility study with our partner for the development of a gold operation in Mexico. All of these projects have been considered "risky" by most standards, and Newmont has been very successful in all of them through risk mitigation programs including utilizing strong and successful in-country partners, concentrating on developing a strong national workforce with minimal expatriate employees, utilizing World Bank, EBRD and IFC financing and building and maintaining strong ties with host governments. This paper describes in more detail, some of the risk mitigation programs that Newmont has used to successfully grow the company through development of major foreign mining operations.

The limitation of sulfur dioxide in power plant emissions dictates that sulfur in coal be reduced to the lowest possible level before combustion so as not to aggravate the emission control problem at the stack. For coal fired power plants, the methods in practice to achieve low sulfur coal include mining areas with relatively low sulfur. reducing sulfur in the mined coal through preparation techniques and blending high and low sulfur coals. A prerequisite to the successful implementation of any of these practices is the knowledge of the spatial distribution and the capability to predict sulfur values in a coal seam.

A group of gold deposits in southeastern Ecuador, near the town of Zamora, have become the focus of intensive mining activity, due to their extremely high gold grade (unconfirmed reports of about 50 g/t or 1.4 oz per st, or more). The deposits at Nambija and other prospects in the district are hosted by a sequence of sedimentary and volcanic rocks that are present within a large xenolith orpendant within alkalic phases of the Jurassic Zamora Batholith. The xenolith, unknown in size, is composed of various island arc lithologies (limestones, shales, sandstones, tuffs and flows). All have been altered to some degree by skarn-hornfelde alteration assemblages. Mineralized areas appear to be localized within a linear zone containing tectonic and intrusion breccias that cross-cut a complex calcic skarn assemblage developed within the xenolith. Although the nature of the host rocks appears to have exerted some control on mineralization, the high-grade ore is concentrated along north-northeast trending breccias, faults and dikes that crosscut the flat-lying stratigraphy and skarn alteration as suggested by the strong linear trend of workings in the district.

Along with kyanite and sillimanite, andalusite forms part of the sillimanite industrial minerals trimorphous alumina-silicate group. Theoretically, andalusite contains about 60% A1203 and 40% Si02, with a Mohs hardness of 7 to 7.5 and a specific gravity of 3.0-3.2. Andalusite generally occurs in the contact metamorphic zones of schists and shales, constituting about 10% of the ground mass ore body. The 5- to 20mm- (0.2- to 0.8-in.-) long crystals are usually liberated through crushing and magnetic/heavy-media separation. Relatively minor occurrences of andalusite are found in Andalusia, Spain (where it was first identified), Portugal, the former Soviet Union, Ghana, South Korea, California and North Carolina. It also occurs in China, France and South Africa. The latter two represent nearly all the andalusite that is exported. Andalusite is an inert refractory raw material that does not require calcining before use. It involves an internal conversion to mullite after heating to 1400° to 1600° C (2552° to 2912° F). At higher temperatures of about 1800° C (3272° F), the mullite converts to corundum and liquid silica.

As part of an ongoing programme on behaviour of heavy minerals In streams, the dispersion of Au as free gold (Day and Fletcher, 1987), Sn in cassiterite (Fletcher et al, 1987) and W in scheelite (Saxby and Fletcher, 1987) have been investigated downstream of mineralization. The studies of Au and W were undertaken, in British Columbia and the Yukon Territory, respectively, in streams that are strongly influenced by spring snowmelt floods. Sn was investigated under tropical rainforest conditions in Peninnsular Malaysia.

INTRODUCTION Manufacturer sponsored research over the past three years has proven the suitability of styrene-butadiene/ asphalt membranes in many waste disposal seepage control applications for the mining industry in general and uranium mining and milling in particular. The class of membranes that have been tested are SBR/asphalt blends containing up to 68 weight percent asphalt, the balance being elastomeric polymers, fillers and phase compatibility promoters. These membranes are classified as thermoplastic, elastomeric materials and can be hot spray applied to any moderately dry substrate at 177°C (350°F), and placed in service within one hour of application. The properties of this membrane that make it suitable for use as an engineering_ material in these applications are discussed. These properties include chemical resistance, bacterial resistance, UV light resistance, permeability, stress/strain characteristics and bonding data. The favorable economics of the system are also discussed. The preliminary raw test data on the above properties were reported in a previous paper, (Chambers, 1980) and most will not be repeated here. Instead, this report considers the original data in relation to subsequent data and concentrates on interpretation of the trends for engineering purposes. However, several of the pictures contained in the original paper are reproduced in this report for illustration purposes. BACKGROUND Asphalt alone has a long history of use as a water-stop material. Its limitations of becoming brittle when cold and soft when hot, however, are well recognized. The service temperature for common grades of asphalt is usually in the 4° to 49°C (40° to 120° F) range. Modifications to the base asphalt can generally improve its performance at the high end of the temperature range by raising its softening point, but only the addition of one class of modifiers, elastomeric polymers, improves low temperature flexibility as well and also adds resilience. Both of these properties are of extreme importance if the waterstop material is to maintain its integrity when used on substrates which are unstable, non-cohesive, discontinuous or have significant expansion/constraction coefficients. Water from underground uranium mines located in the Ambrosia Lake district near Grants, New Mexico, U.S.A., is treated to reduce levels of uranium, selenium, radium and molybdenum. The treatment system consists of a series of ponds and an ion exchange plant. Bacterial and algal populations present in the pond system are considered agents which actively assist in removal of the pollutants present in the water. Pondbottom sediments maintain a reducing zone and a large population of sulfate-reducing bacteria of the genera [Desulfovibrio] and [Desulfotomaculum]. Uranium, molybdenum, and selenium accumulate in the pond sediment. Stimulation of the microbial sulfate-reducing activity resulted in a decrease of soluble concentrations of these elements in laboratory systems. Predominant components of the treatment ponds’ algal flora are the filamentous [Spirogyra] and benthic [Chara]. Laboratory study indicates that [Spirogyra] is more active than [Chara] in removal of uranium and molybdenum from solution. However field-collected algal samples of both of the genera contain uranium and molybdenum. Laboratory studies indicate that death and decay of the algae in association with pond sediment does not result in return of cellbound uranium and molybdenum to the water. The algae appear to act as bio-filters for accumulation of particulate pollutants and agents for adsorption and/or absorption of soluble pollutants.

Computer-aided lithogeochemistry was used to "prospect" for stratabound scheelite (a tungsten ore) that occurs in many Precambrian clastic and chemical rocks, northeastern Brazil; The district is a metallogenic province covering about 5000km2. Exploration bedrock lithogeo-chemistry was applied at regional, local, and mine scales to identify regional tungsten trends and dispersion halos associated with economic tungsten mineralization. Regional coarse-mesh sampling (Cu,Mo,W) in 25km2 cells "found" all major mines and significant prospects using objective and cost objective computer mapping of bedrock geochemical data. The method is efficient ; of the 3600km2 study area only 9% of the original area remained after the initial pass. Of this area, the geo- chemically highest ranked (4%) cells contained the mines and prospects. Similar computer-aided treatment was applied to Cu,Mo,W,F, and Be lithogeochemical data from several mining concessions and prospects with outcropping and subsurface W mineralization. At a local scale out-cropping W mineralization was recognized at a distance of 500m. Fracture zones through which hydrothermal solutions traveled were identified; these were related to W mineralization at a depth of 200m.

This paper identifies physical conditions responsible for past instability of the Main Hill area in Kennecott Copper Corporation's Bingham Canyon Mine, Bingham Canyon, Utah, and describes successful stabilization techniques employed in this slide zone. Geotechnical highlights of recent slides are presented, including monitoring, geological engineering data collection, hydrology, physical rock properties, and stability analyses. Local conditions responsible for slope movement in the Main Hill zone are: (1) high pore water pressure that causes a substantial decrease in real and effective material strengths; (2) continuous structural systems that allow sliding in the more competent rock zones; and (3) broad areas containing fractured, altered , and incompetent rock and soil- like materials. The failure mode is structurally controlled and involves a circular-type soil failure in the toe region initiated by excessive pore water pressure. A surface mapping method is presented which assigns rock mass quality on the basis of block size and rock substance strength. This site characterization technique has successfully predicted slide boundaries and failure modes; used in conjunction with laboratory determined shear strengths, it has provided basic input for calculating slope safety factors in the Main Hill slide zone.

An application of geostatistics to financial decision analysis is the linking of reserve parameters estimation precisions to a mine economics computer program calculating profitability. The estimates of economic reserve parameters are obtained by the kriging method, while precision are calculated by a technique more akin to the polygon method. To indicate the effect of the variables probability distribution on a distribution of profitability, their values are sampled by a Monte Carlo technique and entered into a mine economics modelling program developed by T. R. Ellis. The distribution of profitability calculations are in essence, a superior method of sensitivity analysis. The method is applied to a roll-front uranium deposit in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming.

The Alton Coal project, located in south-central Utah, lies at one point just over six miles from Bryce Canyon National Park. This region of the southwestern United States has been called the "Golden Circle" of national parks and monuments. Can a mine be inserted into this region so that it does not intrude on this spectacular landscape? The Alton Coal Project is a proposed surface coal mine designed to serve as the fuel source for the Harry Allen Power Plant, a 1,000 megawatt generating station planned for a site 25 miles northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The mine and the power plant will be connected by an underground pipeline through which coal will be transported in slurry form.

Current mine development requires the safe, 'expedient, economical construction of vertical shafts for ventilation and access in diverse ground conditions. Advancements in large diameter shaft drilling have lead to exceptional mechanical refinements of shaft drilling technology. The author traces the history of the equipment and methods employed by the large diameter shaft drilling industry and explores likely paths of future development. A few case histories are cited to illustrate the adaptability of shaft drilling as a versatile tool for advanced worldwide mining operations. Safety, schedules, cost, environmental impact, and capability are discussed to assist the mining engineer in the investigation of feasible projects.

INTRODUCTION Social awareness of the detrimental impact of man-made wastes on our environment has grown considerably during the last two decades. Increased public and institutional concerns have resulted in the implementation of a wide variety of regulatory controls of disposal of wastes. These regulations have often reflected significant conservatism in expecting guaranteed elimination of pollution risks. This sort of expectation assumed a state of knowledge which was not readily available to the major producers of wastes. The mining industry, in particular, has been affected by such regulations in terms of excessive costs and loss of benefit. As a result, investigations are in progress (1) to generate newer methods for satisfactory stabilization of mine and mill wastes and (2) to apply the available technology to achieve the standards set by the regulatory agencies at reasonable costs. This paper presents a conceptual scheme for stabilization of mill wastes by suitable management of operations and accelerated consolidation of tailings slurries. The main discussion in this paper is aimed at the ability of the proposed scheme to address the major considerations in effective disposal. Comparison in both cost and effectiveness are also made between the proposed scheme and various other currently used disposal concepts. MAJOR CONSIDERATIONS IN EFFECTIVE DISPOSAL The primary objective of an effective tailings disposal scheme is to provide containment of the contaminants in such a manner that the undesirable impact of the wastes on the three basic elements of our environment--land, air, and water-would be minimal. Bearing the above objective in mind, one may justifiably list the major considerations in the choice of the disposal scheme in terms of its effects on land, air, and water (Bromwell, 1976) as follows: Effects on Land (1) whether the scheme makes optimal use of land.

Despite a recession that's crippling many US industries, and a UMW strike that wasn't supposed to happen, 1981 was a fairly good year for the coal industry. The big news was record-high exports. Queues of colliers waited for weeks at Hampton Roads, VA, and Baltimore, MD, to load coal destined for Europe and the Far East. Private industry and city governments began scrambling for a share of the export boom, and port developments were planned in nearly every coastal state. Coal exports jumped from about 82 Mt (90 million st) in 1980 to a record 83 Mt (92 million st) in 1981, according to the National Coal Association. NCA projects exports to remain at this level 1982. The following statistics illustrate industry performance in other areas: • Demand by domestic utilities and overseas customers was so strong that total US consumption reached 760 Mt (838 million st) in 1981. DOE predicts another record year in 1982, with consumption forecast at 804 Mt (886 million st). • 1981 production of 730 Mt (805 million st) was just slightly below the record high of 748 Mt (824 million st) in 1980, "a remarkable figure considering that UMW production was shut off for 72 days during 1981," says NCA President Carl Bagge. Production in 1982 should set a new record, 800 Mt (880 million st). • Eastern coal production fell 7.4%, while western production-largely unaffected by the UMW strike-rose almost 10%. NCA says eastern output will rise almost 12% to 538 Mt (593 million st) in 1982, and western production will increase by 6.6% to 266 Mt (293 million st). • Production per manhour is improving. After the strike, weekly production hit the 16 Mt (18 million st) mark and has approached the 18 Mt (20 million st) per week level. •Coal's share of the US electric generation market increased from 51% in 1980 to 53% in 1981. Electric utilities are coal's biggest customer, and their financial situation is precarious. Inflation has thwarted necessary expansion plans, while shifting environmental regulations have played havoc with construction costs. Utilities increased power sales by only 2.5% in 1981; NCA predicts that utility coal use will increase 4% in 1982. The Association's long-range forecast indicates that growth in electricity demand in the immediate future will be much lower than in the 1960s and 70s. Administration Impact Industry optimism following the election of Ronald Reagan and a Republican-dominated Senate didn't survive the year. One bright spot was the appointment of James Watt as Interior Secretary, and his promises to review surface mining regulations and resume leasing. The administration, however, has declined to support federal eminent domain for slurry pipelines and expects port users to foot most of the bill for expansions and improvements.
