The use of conventional tailings deposition methods has been the standard for decades. With the need to reduce the impact of mining, alternative methods are considered when expanding or upgrading tailings handling systems. Converting an existing tailings management system to a more sustainable deposition method during the operation of a mine may incur considerable operational and financial risk, and when assessed more traditionally, does not provide significant advantages. As a result, most mines choose to continue their current technology and add an additional pumping stage or pumpstation to their tailings line in case of a pipeline extension or Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) expansion. This also often involves raising embankments. Changing pumping technology is traditionally assessed by comparing the energy efficiency of current and prospective pumping technology. Despite a reduction in absorbed power, this traditional assessment does not include possible savings in water and the carbon footprint. With the consideration of all these three aspects, alternative pump technologies, such as Positive Displacement (PD) technology, become more economically feasible, providing increased sustainability and enable a site to future-proof their operations. Project feasibility may be affected by the high capital investment required for PD pumps. The benefit of applying PD pumping technology could be enhanced by reducing the volumetric throughput of the pipeline by dewatering the tailings to 65% solids concentration by weight. It was found that despite increasing capital expenditure, the improved reclamation of water will have a positive effect on the direct and indirect cost of fresh water intake to mine operations. This paper seeks to illustrate that in many applications the long-term benefits of investing in sustainable tailings management are optimized when more efficient PD pumping technology is combined with tailings dewatering when upgrading or expanding the tailings handling system.

During the 1980’s, laboratories opened throughout the United States to serve the analysis needs of a rapidly growing asbestos abatement industry. The samples analyzed were either collected during the abatement of known asbestos-containing materials or were suspect asbestos-containing construction materials. Many asbestos analysts received minimal training and used analytical protocols that were industry specific. False positives (reporting a sample as containing asbestos when none is present) went unnoticed or had minor repercussions. The mindset of the industry was to err on the conservative side – it would be better to identify a non-asbestos fiber as asbestos than visa versa. With growing public awareness of the health hazards of asbestos, other materials began to be tested for asbestos content. Rock and ores began to be tested for naturally occurring asbestos by these laboratories using the same protocols or an in-house protocol. Analysts were given no additional training and accreditation, in most cases, it was not required. With no consistency in sample collection, testing protocol or expertise in analysis, significant discrepancies in final results can be expected. If we further complicate this scenario with misidentification of naturally occurring look-a-likes for asbestos, expensive false positives are likely. To avoid the repercussions of misidentification of naturally occurring chrysotile asbestos from look-a-like fibers in rock and ores, correct sampling and analysis protocols with more stringent scientific diagnostic criteria are needed.

Calcium oxide, with its ability to capture and store carbon dioxide, is emerging to become an important tool in carbon management. Calcium oxide can be used reversibly to capture carbon dioxide in situ and then be regenerated to produce a pure stream of carbon dioxide ready for sequestration; the Zero Emission Coal Alliance technology utilizes this property of calcium oxide to generate emissions-free electric power from coal. The reaction of calcium oxide with carbon dioxide resulting in thermodynamically stable carbonate is well understood; however, the efficiency of this reaction is limited by the diffusion of gases through bulk calcium oxide and through a layer of carbonate formed on the surface. In addition, the regeneration of calcium oxide is an endothermic reaction and is favored at high temperatures. The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to address the diffusion limitation, a thin layer of calcium oxide, supported on a high surface area material, is studied thermogravimetrically to demonstrate the physical adsorption of carbon dioxide on calcium oxide. The adsorption is to take place at temperatures lower than required to form calcium carbonate.

The need for anti-corrosion coatings has existed for many years in the ground support industry, but the application requirements have made coating selection limited. Varying groundwater and chemical conditions continually challenge long term coating performance. Traditionally the industry coating preference has been hot-dip galvanizing due to its performance characteristics in highly corrosive environments and low cost nature. The focus of this research was to evaluate the synergistic effect of bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid (CYANEX 272) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), diluted in kerosene, on the extraction and separation of Co(II) and Li(I) from synthetic sulfate solution. The results indicated that using a mixture of CYANEX 272 and D2EHPA was efficient in extracting and separating Co(II) from Li(I). The optimum ratio of CYANEX 272/D2EHPA was found to be 5:1, in which the highest separation factor was obtained (5973.23), and ΔpH0.5 was 4.10. Adding tributyl phosphate (TBP) as a modifier and increasing the temperature improved the metals’ separation rate and extraction efficiency. Thermodynamic studies were also carried out, and ΔH, ΔS, and ΔG values were computed, revealing the endothermic nature of Co(II) and Li(I) extraction by CYANEX 272/D2EHPA mixture. The conducted experiments for the McCabe–Thiele diagram showed the possibility of using two stages to extract over 99% of Co(II) and Li(I). Slope analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were employed to comprehend the Co(II) and Li(I) extraction mechanism using a mixture of CYANEX 272 and D2EHPA.

The operation of intelligent coal mining in complex geological environment is still unable to realize automation. In order to realize the autonomous cutting of fully mechanized mining equipment and improve coal production, a mining and transportation equipment dynamic advancement path planning method based on spatial kinematics coordinate deduction prediction and real-time correction prediction of coal-rock state identification of equipment cutting current index are proposed. Firstly, the spatial motion law of the mining and transportation equipment is analyzed, and the mathematical model of the spatial motion of the mining and transportation equipment is established. The relationship between the adjustment of the shearer rocker arm and the pose change of the scraper conveyor is determined, and the coordinate deduction model of the spatial advancement position of the equipment is determined, which provides a theoretical basis for the advancement path planning of the mining and transportation equipment. Then, on the basis of the mathematical model construction, combined with real geological data and equipment information, the three-dimensional dynamic planning of the advancement path of the mining and transportation equipment is carried out from the two dimensions of the horizontal advancement direction and the shearer walking direction. At the same time, the relationship between the cutting current index of shearer and the state recognition of coal-rock mass is analyzed, and the coal-rock mass state identification of cutting current and the adjustment of rocker arm model is constructed, and the real-time dynamic correction of three-dimensional path is carried out, so that the planned path can better adapt to the sudden change of real geological environment. Then, using the unity3d virtual reality technology, a simulation system for the horizontal advancement path planning of the virtual mining and transportation equipment is constructed, which simulates the real advancement operation process of the mining and transportation equipment and conducts advancement training. Finally, the dynamic advancement scheme update prediction based on the existing actual cutting but ahead of the actual cutting is realized in the virtual scene, and the optimal scheme is transmitted into the existing prediction cutting system to guide the actual physical equipment mining. The path planning method can control the coordinate position error of the advancing cutting path within 15 mm, which provides ideas for the research on the advancing path planning of fully mechanized equipment.

Introduction Some uranium minerals are paramagnetic and hence are amenable to concentration by high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS). This paper describes effects of the HGMS parameters-pulp velocity, field strength, matrix loading, and magnetic field gradient-on the product recovery and grade. Unsatisfactory separation of uranium minerals by HGMS is related to ore-specific properties, such as lack of liberation, fine dissemination of uranium minerals, uniform distribution of magnetic minerals throughout the ore matrix, and interference of fine-sized slimes. Experimental techniques to identify and resolve some of these problems are outlined. HGMS of Uranium Ores The mechanism by which uranium minerals are attracted to a magnetic field is either due to its magnetic susceptibility or its association with other minerals that are magnetic. Data on magnetic susceptibility of uranium minerals are scarce. The only reported data are for uraninite at 2360 X 10-6 cm3/mole. Povarennykh (Andres, 1976) concluded that the magnetic properties of minerals depend on: • Structure of the outer electron shell in a mineral with electropositive atoms; • Valence of the atoms; • State of the chemical bonds; • Type of coordination; and • Proportion of magnetic atoms (Fe, Mn, Cr, and Ni) in the composition of the mineral. However, information on the magnetic susceptibilities of the constituent atoms of a mineral alone does not suffice for evaluating the mineral compound as a whole. Most often, uranium minerals can be beneficiated by HGMS if they are associated with other minerals that are magnetic. This appears to be a more predominant mechanism by which the uranium minerals are beneficiated. Experimental A Sala-HGMS (Malghan and Subramanian, 1981), model 10-15-20, separator was used in the experiments. The matrix material-ferromagnetic stainless steel in the form of expanded metal or steel wool-was packed into a 38-mm (1.5-in.) diameter by 360-mm (14-in.) long canister. The matrix material occupied only a 150-mm (6-in.) length. The experimental set-up and slurry flow direction are described elsewhere (lannicelli, 1976). The response of uranium ores in the HGMS was studied by feeding well-dispersed slurry at 10% solids and examining the influence of process variables on selectivity and overall uranium recovery. The chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the ores under study are presented in Table 1.

Other commodities with sizable production in New Mexico include barite, caliche, clay, dimension stone, fluorspar, gypsum, humate, limestone, mica, salt, sand and gravel, scoria, and silica sand Non metallic resources are distributed throw out the state, but development and exploitation is concentrated in western and southeastern New Mexico. The value of industrial rocks and minerals within the state grew about 9 percent to more than $227 million in 1978. Continued growth, however, depends on continued demand, exploration, and development.

Zinc ferrite ( ZnFe2O4) is a by-product of non-ferrous metal production and is considered a promising source of raw zinc. The most efficient way to extract zinc from its ferrite is via acidic extraction, specifically leaching by hydrochloric acid. A comparative study of synthetic zinc ferrite hydrochloric acid leaching in isopropanol, aqueous, and the mixed solvent was performed. Zinc ferrite was obtained by sintering a zinc and iron (III) oxide mixture. Crushed samples were subjected to leaching in 1 M HCl at 323, 333, and 353 K and pulp density of 1 g/100 mL. The dissolution of zinc and iron into solution in organic media reached 77% at 353 K, while in an aqueous environment this value was 65%. The activation energy of 70.0 kJ/ mol was found for the leaching process in an isopropanol environment, which is lower than that in an aqueous solution by 15%. The more efficient leaching effect of isopropanol is attributed to the lower dielectric constant of the alcohol which increases the affinity of chloride anions for zinc and iron cations at leaching.

They are there for the 66th Annual Colorado MPD Meeting held at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs: three days of finely curated talks and social events where participation was strong, and information was exchanged and connections forged in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.Water, tailings and social licenseNot surprisingly, water management, with the associated issues of tailings and social license, was high on the minds of those present. The Mount Polley and Samarco tailings dam failures have had repercussions across the industry. “There are big challenges with respect to tailings, and social and environmental pressures to find better ways to treat them,” said Steve Hearn of Huntsman Corp., a view echoed by Bob Kilborn of Kilborn Group LLC. Metso Minerals director Keith Butler said, “Water conservation is a key issue today. Many mining activities are now located in remote areas, so it has social and economic impacts on mining operations.” For Brian Olson of Samuel Engineering, wastewater and reclaimed-water treatment is interesting.Fittingly, the first talk of the meeting was on dry stack tailings by Michael Blois of Takraf USA, who went over both the advantages and disadvantages. “The average now is over one tailings dam failure a year,” Blois said, “and that is one too many.” But the technology may not be the right fit for all projects. In his talk on the KSM project, Jay Layman, president and COO of Seabridge Gold, showed how it isn’t practical for KSM and how Seabridge reached the decision on a cyclone sand tailings managementfacility as the preferred management strategy.The luncheon keynote also dealt with a tailings pond spill, but of a different kind. Bob Schafer, chief executive of Eagle Mines Management, spoke on the federal missteps that led to the spill into the Animas River from the Gold King Mine, a mine that had been a dry mine throughout its life and up to the 1990s."

INTRODUCTION As a set of management practices, "Knowledge Management" (KM) has disappointed many of its early advocates. The core notion behind KM can be summed up in the oft- quoted adage, "If we only knew what we know." KM describes a set of tools, practices, and approaches for using data, information, and expertise-knowledge-resident in an organization to improve the performance of that organization. The idea was incubated, hatched, and grew among some the largest and most successful companies in the world. Some of these companies created "Chief Knowledge Officers." Many more collectively invested billions in a huge range of KM efforts, all designed to use their organizations' information and expertise to innovate, improve margins, sell, or accomplish any of a myriad of sound business goals. Some KM efforts were successful, and many were not.* Today, it is indisputably the case that KM as a named set of practices has fallen out of favor. Why, then, should KM be discussed at a conference on "Things that Actually Work" for plant operators? Because, in many instances, KM has actually worked. The practices that represent KM done right offer significant opportunities for plant operators to achieve real gains, especially in times of resource constraints and in the face of ever-increasing technical and commercial goals. The KM fad is all but over. The KM benefits continue to accrue to those who have applied the lessons learned from that fad, and implemented sound * Fair disclosure: I am not unbiased with respect to the potential impact of KM. The Ashlu Creek Hydro-electric project, located north of Squamish, BC, at the confluence of Ashlu Creek and the Squamish River, comprises a 49 MW run-of-river project and features a 4.08 m diameter, 4.4 km power tunnel and a 128 m deep drop shaft. The Ashlu Creek Hydro-electric project is being developed by Innergex under Ashlu Creek Investments Limited. Site civil works are being completed by Ledcor CMI of Vancouver with tunnel construction by Frontier Kemper Constructors ULC under a lump sum design-build contract. Site works got underway in September 2006 with the construction of the tunnel portal and laydown area. These site works required rock slope stabilization over a 50 m rock slope to secure the laydown area as well as the construction of a tail track muck tipping station and structural wall to facilitate TBM excavation and spoil removal. Starter tunnel construction commenced in early 2007 and TBM tunneling started in the late spring of 2007 and is planned to continue until early 2009. The power tunnel is being excavated using a 1,200 kW Wirth open-type hard rock TBM dressed with 31?17' cutters. The TBM featured two fixed mounted rock bolt drills behind the finger shield: these were removed and replaced with jacklegs to improve access. A probe drill at the end of the main beam is also present. The geology along the 4.4 km power tunnel comprises very strong and generally massive granitic bedrock with rock strength greater than 225 MPa. A unique feature of the project is that no subsurface investigations have been completed for the tunnel however extensive bedrock outcrops are present along the Ashlu Creek valley. A historical quarry exists approximately mid-way along the tunnel alignment that has exposed good quality granitic bedrock. TBM tunneling to date has achieved advance rates of 10?20 m/day with a maximum of 23 m and has encountered all of the anticipated six major fault zones where the installation of various standard high capacity tunnel support was successful to facilitate TBM advance through these sections.

One of the objectives of today's mine superintendent is to increase his equipment availability. To this end we have seen improved scheduling procedures, preventive maintenance programs and extensive drive training and operating procedures. However, until recently, one area that has changed little in the past twenty years is the method of refueling and servicing mine equipment. In looking at mines across the country continually one encounters the hazardous oil soaked ground, the hand held fuel nozzle and the maze of hoses of the "traditional" fuel stop. By adapting technology developed in the construction and aircraft industry, current fueling and servicing practices can be easily improved. The result will be less nonproductive time, less downtime from engine failures and increased security from major refueling fires. The time saved almost amounts to having another truck in the fleet! One feature of the improved servicing practice is the implementation of high flow fueling. For trucks now on the market, a flow rate between 120 and 150 gam is feasible, about 90 gam greater than current practice. This flow rate could be increased even further as larger trucks come into use. A second idea borrowed from the aircraft industry is the use of positive lock type connection nozzles that automatically shut off when flow stops. These may be used for fuel, water, oil and hydraulic systems to eliminate spillage and assure that clean fuel, oils, and water are delivered to the vehicles. The reduction of fuel spillage lessens the threat of major fires resulting: in equipment damage and loss. Eliminating fire hazards will become even more important as the turbine engine with its lighter, more volatile fuels come into common use.

In response to the mandates in the MINER Act of 2006, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted refuge alternatives research that included characterizing the utility, practicality and survivability of refuge chambers and outby safe havens. NIOSH also prepared and delivered a report to Congress in late December 2007 that summarized the findings of the re-search, included recommendations concerning the design and performance specifications for refuge alternatives, and focused on specific information that could inform the regulatory process on refuge alternatives. This paper highlights NIOSH?s research and recommendations concerning refuge alternatives, survivability evaluations of refuge chambers and presents a brief review of the current deployment of refuge chambers in underground coal mines in the U.S. The research has lead to the conclusion that refuge alternatives have the potential for saving the lives of mine workers if they are part of a comprehensive escape and rescue plan and if appropriate training is provided.

Each year, hundreds of mine workers are involved in machinery-related accidents. Many of these accidents involve inadequate or improper use of lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. To mitigate the occurrence of these accidents, new safety methods are needed to monitor access to hazardous areas around operating machinery, improve documentation/monitoring of maintenance that requires shutdown of the machinery, and prevent unexpected startup or movement during machine maintenance activities. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently researching the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide intelligent machine monitoring as part of a comprehensive LOTO program. This paper introduces NIOSH’s two-phase implementation of an IoT-based intelligent machine monitoring system.

A novel dry and wet air dust filter concept was conceived and demonstrated successfully at two mines. A steel-wool and a fiberglass filter, suitable for underground use were identified through laboratory testing and demonstrated in the mine. The steel wool filter was operated with and without water sprays while the fiberglass filter was only operated in the dry mode. The dry steel wool filter provided a dust capture of 37% at a negligible pressure drop. When fine misting water sprays were used on the steel wool filter, the dust capture increased to 51% again with a negligible pressure drop. The filter screen also remained clean and no change in air flow characteristics was observed as a function of time. The dry fiberglass filter however did not perform as well achieving only 11% dust capture while introducing a significant resistance to air flow. This technology is seen to have several applications in underground coal mines.

The first operation permitted under Michigan’s Part 632 Non-Ferrous Mineral Mining Law, it opened in 2014 and is expected to produce 163 kt (360 million lbs) of nickel, 134 kt (295 million lbs) of copper and small amounts of other metals over its estimated nine-year lifespan.The company extracts approximately 2 kt/d (2,200 stpd) from the underground nickelcopper mine using a bench-and-fill stoping process. Accessed from the surface by specialized underground trucks, the vehicles carry about 45,400-kg (100,000-lb) loads through a 1.6-km (1- mile) long and 5.4-m (18-ft) diameter ramp shaft descending into the earth at a 13 percent grade. Stoping is a bottom-up method that involves systematically blasting columns of loosened ore that is then mucked by front loaders into trucks and backfilled using cemented and uncemented rockfill."

The Arrowhead Tunnels Project represents the final portion of a 70 km (44-mile) long water conveyance facility that will bring up to 28 m3/sec (1,000 ft3/sec) of water into Southern California. The 13 km (8-mile) tunneling project is well underway and consists of two, 5.8 m (19-foot) diameter TBM bores through extremely variable geological conditions. The tunnels lie near the base of the San Bernardino Mountains and several significant faults including the San Andreas Fault run within one kilometer (0.6 miles) of the tunnel alignment. Numerous other significant faults cross the tunnel alignment and water pressures in the tunnel have been recorded as high as 20 bar (300 psi). This paper describes some of the problems and challenges encountered and the solutions implemented to advance the two hybrid TBMs under conditions that ranged from hard rock with no water inflows to full-face granular material under 10-bar pressure and in excess of 32 l/sec (500 gpm) inflows. Due to the range and severity of ground and water conditions actually encountered, the Owner-Contractor-Designer team eventually found that adjusting the means and methods to be more responsive—virtually on a day-by-day basis—was needed to suit the conditions
