The development of liquid-level control algorithms, based on sets of linguistic rules expressing human operator's "intuitive" control strategies, have been reported. The main objective of the present paper is to illustrate the implementation methodology. The experimental work was done with a 28.3Lflotation cell. The control variable (height of pulp in the cell) was controlled by manipulating the outflow rate. The controller algorithms were programmed and implemented using an Applelle computer and a Keithley das Series 500 measurement and control interface. It is pointed out that the scheme of fuzzy controllers is simple to use and powerful enough to handle complex and nonlinear systems.

Much of the mining industry in North America is in a crisis state. Host producers are operating at production levels well below capacity, some have been merged or sold, while others have been mothballed or closed permanently. For many of us still operating, the future is uncertain. Despite the many cutbacks and closures, there is still an abundant supply of minerals in the world market and there is almost no hope for any relief on price pressures on most mineral commodities in the near future. The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC)operates an iron ore mine, a concentrator and a pellet plant known as the Carol Project located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. This concentrator and the pellet plant have the annual capacity to produce 20 million and 10 million tons respectfully. A company owned and operated railway links this operation with the dock terminal facilities in Sept Iles, Quebec.

For 30 years, mining operations worldwide have used diesel-powered mobile machinery to mechanize the mining process. South African diamond mines and some US coal mines have 15 years of experience with this type of equipment. During the past eight years, most of the new gold production from underground mines outside of South Africa has been mined by bulk methods using diesel-powered machinery. The underground mining industry, then, has secured and institutionalized the larger benefits created by a technology that was new to mining engineers in the early 1960s. The state of mechanized diesel-powered underground mining is now mature. To survive, though, mine operators -regardless of commodity mined and position in the commodity cycle-must maximize the benefits of diesel technology. The benefits gained in the next seven to 10 years will be realized by tweaking this component, fine tuning that piece of machinery and demanding optimum use of the technology. Manufacturers of diesel-powered machinery share the condition of maturity with their customers. Larger scale and easy market development have occurred. Much has been made of the potential size of the US coal segment as well as markets in China and the Confederation of Independent States (CIS). Indeed, opportunities do exist in these regions. However, these market development opportunities do not imply the market size trend line remains unchanged. They simply mean the potential market size is within reach. In fact, the market size for the product is shrinking.

Oil shale may not produce the same excitement of the gold rush days, but presently there is an "oil shale fever" among mining men. Such exotic equipment as 800-ton haul units, 75 ft. boring machines, and huge fully automatic multi-purpose jumbo drill units are only a few of the topics of conversation in the oil shale groups. I am dreaming, perhaps, but this type of exotic thinking will exuberate the advancement in mining technology and will only be tempered by the practicality and the availability of today's equipment.

In-situ leaching of uranium by aqueous ammonium carbonate containing oxygen or hydrogen peroxide as oxidant results in the partial dissolution of sulfides. While some of the sulfide sulfur is oxidized to sulfate, a considerable portion is oxidized only to thiosulfate and polythionates. Polythionates poison the anion exchange resin used to extract uranium. At the Palangana operation in southeast Texas, the trithionate ion (S3062-) was found by infrared spectrometry to be the major resin poison. Treatment of ion exchange feed solutions with hydrogen peroxide only resulted in partial conversion of reduced sulfur species to sulfate, and trithionate conversion was particularly slow. Poisoning of the resin also occurred from the ammonium chloride eluant, which built up trithionate because of recycling. This was essentially eliminated by chlorinating the eluant prior to yellow cake precipitation.

SPL (Spent Pot Linings) are hazardous waste. The described work seeks to identify simple and inexpensive processes for recovering the recyclable materials and thereby both reduce the volume to be handed to the dumps and produce a waste that belongs to a less dangerous class. For this purpose a study was conducted to characterise the structure of the cell and the refilling elements at the end of the Aluminum process. The properties of the material that make up the SPLs were determined in order to apply the related selection procedures. The study permitted the design of treatment process able to reduce the negative environment impact of the aluminum production cycle.

The effects of operating variables on water transport to the over- flow, classification of hydrophilic particles and the recovery of copper and molybdenum from a low-grade porphyry ore are presented. Recoveries of copper and molybdenum exceeding 90 percent at a grade of 8 percent Cu and 0.2 percent Mo were realized for minus 100 mesh (1 49 µm) material at retention times of less than 500 milliseconds. The rapid rate of flotation and the effective separation of fine particles for an air sparged hydrocyclone appear to be due to directed interaction of particles in a high force field with numerous freshly formed small bubbles. This interaction occurs in the swirl flow developed by the system and is analyzed in terms of collision and induction time phenomena.

Rock burst has always been a major problem in deep underground engineering with high stress, and rock burst strength evaluation has become an important research topic. To effectively predict the rock burst hazard in underground rock mass engineering, a cloud model (CM) rock burst intensity evaluation method based on the CRITIC method and order relation analysis method (G1) was proposed in this paper. First, a rock’s uniaxial compressive strength σc, tangential stress σθ, uniaxial tensile strength σt, ratio of uniaxial compressive strength to tensile strength σc/σt (brittleness coefficient), ratio of tangential stress to uniaxial compressive strength σθ/σc (stress coefficient), elastic deformation energy index Wet, and depth of cover H were selected as evaluation indices of rock burst intensity. Ninety-five groups of rock burst measured data at home and abroad were selected, and the objective weight and subjective weight of each index were calculated by using the CRITIC method and G1 method, respectively. The comprehensive weight was determined according to the combined weighting method of game theory, and the sensitivity of each evaluation index was analyzed. By utilizing a forward cloud generator, the membership degrees of different rock burst grades were calculated, and then the rock burst intensity grades of the samples were evaluated and compared with the evaluation results of the CRITIC-CM method and G1-CM method and the actual grades. Finally, the rock burst classification ability of the model was analyzed. To better verify the accuracy and reliability of this model, the rock burst case of the W39 line in the Chengchao Iron Mine was analyzed by using this model. The research results show that the rock burst evaluation results based on CRITIC-G1-CM are basically consistent with the actual rock burst grade, and the rock burst intensity grade evaluation model has good practicability and reliability.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The American Concrete Institute defines shotcrete as "mortar or concrete conveyed through a hose and pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a surface." This definition thus includes what is traditionally known as gunite, which is a pneumatically applied mortar. In mining practice, the term shotcrete is restricted to pneumatically applied concrete, and this differentiation will be used in this chapter. In 1914, following the invention of the mortar gun in 1907, then chief engineer of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) George Rice developed the gunite process for underground test work at the USBM facility at Bruceton, PA. After World War I, gunite was used extensively in American mines and was also utilized for underground civil works such as the San Jacinto tunnel in California. The greatest development was in Europe where, as early as 1911, gunite was successfully used as an overlay for deteriorated tunnel linings. In 1951, the Swiss firm Aliva developed a pneumatic gun capable of handling coarse aggregate, thus making possible the first use of shotcrete at the Maggia hydropower development. Initially, shotcrete was used to reduce manpower requirements for forming and placing conventional concrete. However, by 1954 Sonderegger was reporting that the structural advantages of shotcrete were derived from its flexibility and from the fact that it could be applied almost immediately after the opening had been made. The incorporation of wire mesh into the shotcrete led to the new Austrian tunnel method or NATM. The use of shotcrete in American mines has been implemented more recently. This delay seems to be due to previously unsuccessful experiences with gunite as a structural material and to the US reliance on wood or steel supports in main-line haulageways. The long experience with the apparently more substantial rigid supports led mine operators to be reluctant to accept the new and seemingly unrealistic lighter shotcrete support. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Shotcrete is a relatively new material for use in underground support systems. Consequently, experienced miners are not always available who are capable of applying the material effectively. Shotcrete, particularly in the small cross sections typical of mine shafts or haulageways, is applied in cramped quarters under less than ideal conditions. Adequate lighting should be made available. The surface should be clean and free of running or dripping water. It may be necessary to collect flowing water in plastic pipes or water collection devices. Any dry cement dust from previous shotcrete applications should be washed from the surface in order to assure a good bond. The US Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) while shooting test panels at the Cunningham tunnel in 1974, found that experienced shotcrete operators were able to obtain up to three times greater compressive strengths than were obtained by unskilled operators using the same equipment and shotcrete mix. ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS Since sodium and potassium hydroxide, as well as other moderately toxic compounds, are often contained in shotcrete (particularly where accelerators are used), safety precautions must be taken to prevent skin and respiratory irritation. Nozzlemen and helpers are required to wear gloves, protective clothing, and ventilation hoods with a filtered air supply. Respirators approved by USBM, equipped with chemical filters that will not pass the caustic mists, may be permitted in lieu of hoods if goggles or safety glasses are worn. Protective ointments are available to reduce skin irritation. All air and shotcrete feed hoses should be equipped with safety-type couplings and secured with safety chains at each coupling to prevent whipping in the event of a hose or coupling failure. Some environmental effects can take place down-stream from the development face being supported. The accelerator compounds, as well as the portland cement used in the shotcrete, will be found in the rebound material which falls to the invert of the heading. Since these compounds may be leached from the rebound material and carried by the drainage system, it may be necessary to install neutralizing or other water treatment facilities. Investigations may find that the final reaction with other compounds being leached from the mining operations may result in a more or less environmentally acceptable end product. USES OF SHOTCRETE General Uses Shotcrete, as a combination of cement, aggregate, and accelerator, is utilized for underground openings such as shafts, adits, haulageways, and service chambers for the following general purposes : (1) primary sup¬port; (2) final lining; (3) protective covering for excavated surfaces that are altered when exposed to air (the protective covering may be of a temporary or final nature); (4) protective covering for steel or wooden supports, rockbolts and rockbolt plates, heads, nuts, and other mats, including wire fabric, used to prevent rock-falls; and (5) as a lagging material in place of timber, steel, or concrete between steel or wooden supports. These applications can be grouped into three general use categories: shotcrete used as a rock sealant, shotcrete used as a safety measure, and shotcrete used as a structural support. Use as a Rock Sealant Thin applications of shotcrete can reduce or prevent slaking of shales or other rocks that are altered when exposed to the wetting and drying cycles created by mine ventilation circuits. While shotcrete may be effective in preventing such rock alteration, at the present time it is not as economical or efficient as other commercial sealants. However, if the sealant property can be incorporated into the structural support capability, the added contribution is usually helpful. The abstract highlights the impact of flocculants used in the middle thickener of a copper-molybdenum plant on both process water quality and molybdenite floatability. The study investigates the effect of a starch-based flocculant (wheat starch) on the efficiency of the middle thickener and molybdenite flotation. The findings indicate that the presence of starch influences the settling behavior of particles with different shapes, and the dosage of starch affects both molybdenum recovery and the presence of copper minerals in the molybdenum concentrate.

The preparation of coal-water slurry fuel (CWSF) has the potential to be a commercially viable technology for the coal industry. The technology base required to prepare stable CWSF using grinding circuits has been developed over the past decade and is now being applied to the preparation of CWSF from wet coal fines which are generated during coal beneficiation. When preparing CWSF, the optimum CWSF formulation must be determined to ensure that the fuel will be stable while having acceptable atomization and combustion properties, and the production run must be monitored closely to ensure that the CWSF quality is maintained. This paper describes the CWSF formulation process, CWSF preparation circuits, and some of typical problems encountered in, and solutions to, the transportation and storage of CWSF.

An operating problem encountered at the Moa Bay operation in Cuba, where nickeliferous laterite ore is processed by sulfuric acid pressure leaching, is the formation of alunite and hematite deposits on the autoclave walls. The AMPX Extractive Research & Development, Inc., metallurgical laboratory (Golden, Colorado) has made substantial improvements in the Moa Bay process in the areas of metal recovery, energy consumption, and feed versatility. One of the advantages of AMAX's process is its ability to treat substantial portions of nickel- and magnesium-rich serpentine while maintaining acid utilization efficiency. The process minimizes scale formation by combining staged acid addition with vigorous agitation and 270°C operation, but does not eliminate scaling. This paper describes how advantage can be taken of MgSO4?XH20 precipitation both to inhibit alunite scaling and to disperse hematite scale within the MgSO4?XH20 matrix. Cooling the autoclave from its 270°C operating temperature down to 180°C takes advantage of the reverse solubility of magnesium sulfate. The magnesium dissolves, liberating entrained hematite, thus providing a means for control of autoclave scale with minimum process disruption.

Growing demand for valuable battery materials and environmental issues from battery disposal make the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) essential. Specifically, the green approaches using organic reagents have garnered many attentions for battery recycling. In this study, a synergetic organic leaching system using methanesulfonic acid (MSA) of strong organic acid and citric acid (CA) with good chelating ability was investigated to extract valuable metals from LiCoO2. Hydrogen peroxide was used as a reducing agent to enhance leaching kinetics. Cobalt extraction of 98% and lithium extraction of 97 % were achieved in the optimized condition; 2.4M MSA, 1.6M CA, 1.0 vol% H2O2, S/L ratio 80 g/L, 85 °C, and 1 h. The optimal leaching condition of the MSA-CA mixed leaching system exhibited good applicability to various cathode scraps, such as LiCoO2, LiNixMnyCo1- x-yO2, and LiNixCoyO2. The dissolved Co and Li ions in the MSA-CA leachate were selectively recovered with high recovery efficiencies of 99 % and 97 % as Co3O4 and Li3PO4, respectively. The recovered Co3O4 and Li3PO4 were utilized to regenerate cathode materials. LiCoO2 and LiFePO4 were also synthesized through a solid-state reaction and hydrothermal method. The recycling process based on the MSA-CA-H2O2 synergetic leaching system was proposed, and it might be applied as a green and economical organic leaching system for the recycling of various types of spent LIBs.

Loudoun Water’s Quarry A (Milestone Reservoir) project involves conversion of a rock quarry to a billion-gallon raw water reservoir. The project includes a new 40 MGD pump station, deep intake shaft, and three drill and blast intake tunnels for accessing the reservoir. Due to concerns regarding constructability and construction risks, the project design was paused while a Construction Manager At-Risk (CMAR) contractor was procured. The CMAR contractor was engaged collaboratively with the design team to provide risk and constructability input for refining the design. Aspects of the original design, design modifications, and benefits of the CMAR collaboration will be presented.

Scarcely a month goes by that I or someone else at Newmont Mining or Newmont Gold isn't asked to give a talk on the topic I was asked to discuss today. Investors, financial analysts, geologists, metallurgists, even our government--everybody wants to know what the future holds for gold mining. Well, you're not going to get exactly what you asked for. Today, I'm prepared to focus primarily not on what the future will bring to us, but rather on what the future will demand from us. More than that, I cannot undertake because it isn't within my scope to predict how wise and resourceful everyone in our industry will be in the future. What our future will hold, as I see it, will depend on our--and our colleagues'-- responses to these very real demands. Three critical issues stand out in my mind as to what the future will demand of us in the gold mining industry. And these demands will be for: 1. The very greatest of technical expertise and innovation. 2. The highest order of environmental sensitivity and timely accommodation. 3. Planning, planning and more planning. All of these flow inexorably today from the traditional objective of any mining company--or any company in any business, and that is, to make money. Nothing as I see it, should be undertaken by a geologist, metallurgist or even an environmental department, unless the exercises will enhance profits; and nothing may be ignored which can have consequent damage to the bottom line. Thus, the three issues I've listed for you subordinate themselves to the objective of making money, although at least in the environmental area, it might seem to some that we can only incur additional costs without even a dollar-for-dollar return. I hope to disabuse you today of any such out-of-date notion. Let's tackle the first issue-- Technical Expertise and Innovation. Newmont Gold Company this year is celebrating its 25th anniversary of successful and profitable operations on the Carlin Trend. Carlin in 1961, which is when exploration began on the "Trend" by Newmont, actually may share a lot of similarities with Carlin today. They didn't then know where the gold was and, if they found it, they had one hell of a challenge mining and processing ore at a profit because gold was selling at only $35 an ounce. Today, we know where the current reserves are. But we don't know where our future reserves lie. Furthermore, we don't know exactly how we're going to mine them, and, as everyone here knows too well, we don't know what the optimum metallurgical treatment is, even if we can find and mine them. And all that despite the abundant level of modern experience and skills within the current generation of mining companies, and the fact that, even taking inflation into account, gold sells at a higher price today than in 1965 when Carlin began operations. But, of course, I'm telling you what you already know.

Introduction From the days of the Spanish in the eighteenth century, Colorado's San Juan mining district has attracted miners and public interest. The Spanish left behind names - San Juans, La Plata, Animas, legends of lost mines, and the remains of a few scattered mining operations. They came, but did not stay. Again in 1860-61, as a spinoff of the Pike's Peak gold rush, prospectors climbed the mountains and descended into the canyons searching for gold. They found some, not enough to convince them to remain and confront the isolation, often hostile environment and the Utes, who rightfully felt this to be their home. Not until the 1870s did miners come to stay. In their wake little camps grew in the high valleys and squeezed into narrow canyons. Nowhere else in Colorado were there more rugged mountains, a higher average elevation, nor a climate that one old Swede said was "three months of mighty late fall and nine months of winter." The San Juans proved eventually to be a mineral treasure chest. At the moment, however, the prospectors sought gold. Then they discovered silver deposits and the first rush was on. It got started just in time to be completely overcome by the Leadville excitement. At Leadville, investors almost fell over themselves to buy claims and stock in the hopes of becoming another millionaire like Leadville's own Horace Tabor. The San Juaners could only look from the sidelines and speculate how it might have been had fate been kinder. Fate was seldom kind, as these pioneers quickly discovered. From the mid-1870s on, the San Juaners wrestled with some major problems. And the fate of their district rode in the balance. The problems they faced were similar to those of other Colorado districts, compounded by their geographic isolation. Every mining district needed the best transportation system available, experienced investors combined with sound investment, and mineral reserves to develop. The San Juans offered the last in abundance. It was hoped the first two would appear. Railroads - much needed transportation link Nothing was more desired than railroad connections, the penultimate nineteenth century form of transportation. Colorado's own, the Denver & Rio Grande, resolved the issue with its mountain-hugging narrow gauge. As early as the mid-1870s, the D&RG dreamed of tapping this potentially lucrative market in southwestern Colorado. A national economic depression and then the Leadville silver excitement prevented immediate construction. Not until 1879-80 did survey crews start work.

Many coal seams are associated with soft floor strata and during mine development if coal pillars are not properly designed, floor heave occurs and causes interruption of coal production. In the severe cases, the section or mine is abandoned. One of the methods for controlling floor heave is floor bolting. This paper describes the demonstration of floor bolting methods in a West Virginia coal mine. Three methods were used: (1) vertical full resin bolting, (2) floor truss bolting, and (3) floor truss bolting plus a floor cut at the center of the entry. The design of each method and the experimental results are discussed in detail.

The iron ore industry might justifiably claim to have originated the science of geophysical prospecting. Their use of geophysical methods was probably the first application of these scientific techniques to the search for economic materials although the exact origin is undoubtedly lost in the unrecorded observations of. some prospector experimenting with compasses or bits of lodestone. Since 1879 when Thalen published "On the Examination of Iron Ore Deposits by Magnetic Measurements" these methods have been a standard supplement to other prospecting techniques. However, many of the great ore bodies of the Precambrian iron ranges were not particularly suitable for geophysical work. The ores were oxidized and enriched through leaching of silica so that they were nearly non-magnetic and other physical properties which distinguished them from the wall rocks were largely destroyed. With the gradual exhaustion of these high grade direct shipping ores, and ores that could be beneficiated by simple means, the iron ore industry turned initially toward the importation of similar high grade foreign ores. At the same time, new processes for concentrating lower grade materials were being developed and older ones improved upon. These concentrates' when pelletized produced such important savings in blast furnace hot metal costs that they now command a premium in the iron ore market and have weakened the competitive position of the remaining high grade ores. The ore bodies now being sought are usually unoxidized and frequently they are also metamorphosed.

The demand for natural gas continues to increase at higher than anticipated rates, partly because of its widening price advantage over most other fossil fuels when the cost of air pollution control is included. However, there are clear indications that natural gas supply from the contiguous 48 states and continental shelves will not indefinitely keep up with this rapid growth in demand. Projections are presented which define the extent of potential deficiencies from the 1970's to the year 2000. Among the sources of supplemental gas - imported pipeline natural gas from Canada and Mexico, tanker import of liquefied natural gas, and synthetic pipeline gas from coal and oil shale - by far the most abundant at potentially competitive costs is pipeline gas from coal. The state of development and relative economics of the various coal gasification processes are reviewed. It is shown that synthetic pipeline gas could become a very substantial market for bituminous coal and lignite at current minemouth prices - 60-70 million' tons of coal for each trillion cubic feet of synthetic pipeline gas produced. This corresponds to only slightly more than the current annual increase is gas demand.
