The evolution of pit lake water quality depends on the lithology and hydrologic characteristics of the ultimate pit surface, the availability of buffering capacity in the wall rock vs. oxidizable sulfide content, the alkalinity of recharging groundwater and the evapo-concentrative characteristics of the system. This paper assesses the geochemistry of 11 existing pit lakes, ranging from the acid Red Hill and Berkeley pit lakes (pH 2.6 to 2.8) to the alkaline Yerington pit lake (pH 8.45). Predicted pit lake chemistry is similar to that in existing pits, with long-term chemistry lying on a geochemical continuum between end members that consist of influent calcium bicarbonate groundwater and naturally occurring sulfate-rich evaporite playa lakes.

When a new tunnelling project starts, it has been a vital tradition for decades to cast and erect master rings horizontally on a flat surface to demonstrate the compliance with dimensional tolerances. Some tenders ask for the erection of two or even three rings upon each other or repeated master ring erections at intervals throughout the project. Especially for large diameters, this is a challenging and risky task for the workforce in the segment factory. A truck-mounted crane is often necessary, and in some cases it can take up to a week to complete a master ring. The concept of virtual rings has the potential to replace this tradition by assembling master rings digitally instead of physically. This is based on a best-fit approach, considering the 3D coordinates from laser tracker measurements of segments or segment moulds. Building a virtual ring, a sub-millimeter accuracy can be achieved, the alignment of neighboring circumferential and ring joints observed, and the fit of bolt holes checked. The traditional method, on the other hand, is discussed controversially despite the significant amount of work and risks—particularly as the horizontal position of the ring and absence of gaskets do not simulate the reality in the excavated tunnel. This paper will highlight the technical aspects of virtual rings, as well as their pros and cons, illustrated by a case study from London Thames Tideway where a total of 30 physical master rings could be replaced by virtual rings.

The St Lawrence Seaway, a deep-water canal system between Montreal and Lake Ontario, was opened for navigation on April 25, 1959. Prior to the opening of the new Seaway, small boats known as canalers and a few deep-sea carriers, primarily from Norway since World War II, were the only ships able to journey past Montreal into Lake Ontario through the old Canadian St. Lawrence canal system. Thus it was necessary for many tons of bulk and general cargo to be shipped all-rail to and from Atlantic ports or to be transhipped to and from canalers. With the opening of the new Seaway, large Great Lakes bulk carriers and a much larger percentage of the world's shipping fleet are now able to sail directly from the sea to the heart of industrial North America. In this paper, the historical events leading up to the construction of the Seaway and the physical nature of the Great Lakes transportation system are briefly reviewed. Following this, an attempt is made to evaluate the effects of the new Seaway on Canada's mineral industry. Because the Seaway has been in operation for only one season, this paper must be considered only an interim report. Because of the importance of the Seaway to iron ore, this commodity will be dealt with in detail, although the effect on other mineral commodities such as coal, petroleum, nonferrous ores, iron and steel will be mentioned. The Buick Concentrator represents state-of- the-art technology in automated digital process control operation utilizing a centralized computer. The process control strategies implemented at Buick are no longer new to the industry but the successful application of these developments is still rather unique in North America. Productivity improvements, determined to be a direct result of the process control developments, are the primary topics of this paper. Emphasis is placed on metallurgical benefits including both lead and zinc recoveries, lead concentrate grade and reductions realized in reagent consumptions, operating costs and personnel. The productivity improvement discussion is preceded by a concentrator description and a brief history of the process control development at Buick. Current control strategies and future applications are presented afterward.

This paper describes the vibration transmissibility characteristics of mining vehicle seats under dynamic conditions in an opencast iron ore mine. Magnitude and frequency contents of vibration signals on the seat floor as well as on top of the seats were measured to record the change during transmission. The conventional rigid seats were found to resonate at about 4 Hz, which coincides with the resonance of the human spine. The pneumatic suspension seats also proved to be more efficient in attenuating the overall vibration energy transmitted from the vehicle chassis to the human body.

The generalized rail haulage simulator described in this paper is an outgrowth of the need to expand a previously developed single level simulator to permit analysis of production problems where intermediate car storage is used. Many of the ideas of the former single level simulator, which is an integral part of an Underground Generalized Materials Handling Simulator (UGMHS), have been used in model development. In addition, experience gained in applying the earlier model to a variety of operating conditions has been heavily relied on. The generalized rail haulage simulation model can operate as an independent system and, as such, can be used to analyze rail haulage systems using production distributions as data input. In addition, this model is designed to replace the present rail haulage sub-assembly in the UGMHS model and the linking procedure has been integrated into the model. The flow of coal from production sections in UGMHS, for example, fill the mine cars and a condition of no empty cars at a loading station will shut down in by production systems.

In June, 1980, Reserve Mining Company completed a 370 million dollar construction project which included process modifications required to reduce the silica content from nine to five percent by weight and increase the iron con- tent of Reserve's pellets from 62.5 to 65.8 percent by weight (dry basis); process modifications and additions required to implement "best available technology" water quality controls; and installation of "best available technology" air emission controls. The new process began operation on June 24, 1980 and is being optimized to meet design objectives. Dry cobbing, fine screening and flotation additions to the concentrating process have reduced the silica content of Reserve's pellet from nine percent to five percent by weight. The process reclaims and reuses all process waters, stores all tailings in a zero discharge tailings basin and meets all air emission standards.

Surface coal mining productivity in the U.S. and Illinois has shown a general declining trend since 1969. The U.S. Department of Energy conducted an analysis in 1980 of the causes of declining productivity in different states. This paper presents a detailed analysis of changes in overall productivity and productivity in different functions such as overburden preparation, overburden stripping, reclamation, coal handling, etc. during the period 1970-1982. Statistical analysys techniques including multiple regression were utilized in the study.

The angular spiral lining system reduces energy consumption and grinding media consumption in grate discharge ball mills. This paper discusses the effect of this lining system on mill product size distribution. Performance comparisons of a grinding circuit outfitted with angular spiral liners in the ball mills are made with respect to standard double-wave liner installations. The angular spiral lining system was developed by Waagner-Biro of Austria. The installation of this lining system at Magma Copper Company, San Manuel, Arizona, is the first of its kind in a grate discharge ball mill used for wet grinding.

An approximate analytic- model is developed for minerals liberation when comminution processes are applied to multi-component ores, i.e., ores that include grains of multiple mineral species. The model employs a one-dimensional representation of ore texture similar to that employed by King (1979) and Klimpel and Austin (1983). The spatial texture representation is viewed as being generated by a stationary semi-Markov process. Associated semi-regenerative processes are defined that can be used to establish, approximately, the joint distribution of particle size and composition, where composition refers to the identities and relative proportions of mineral species included within the particle. Numerical predictions made by the model are compared to size and composition distributions observed in previous experimental studies.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen - today I am in an enviable position for two basic reasons - No. 1, since I am first on the program, the audience should start out awake because those that partied too much last night are still asleep, but in their room, not here. No. 2, since copper, iron, and mining technology are not competitive, the veracity of my statements will not be questioned. Most such meetings I attend are based on the subject of energy and the coal industry does have competition from oil, gas, hydro, and nuclear. However, to counteract this advantage I am the usual engineer with a limited vocabulary by schooling, and the remaining vocabulary almost completely eliminated due to the presence of ladies. In relation to the past of the coal industry, we have not only suffered the competition of other energy sources mentioned before, but in addition have in the last 25 to 30 years been required to meet the demands of a vastly changing market. To explain this statement, I am sure many of you can remember 30 to 40 years back when most homes were heated by coal furnaces or stoves and shudder to recall the shoveling of coal into the fire and the carrying out of ashes with the attendent manual labor dust. Now this space heating portion of our sales has almost become non-existant due to an almost universal switch from coal to natural gas, oil, and electric heating. Actual figures show a decrease from 119 million to less than 28 million tons per year in less than a twenty year span. Also, most of you can remember the coal burning steam locomotives and the tremendous volume of coal they consumed and then the very rapid change to the diesel-electric locomotives, incorporating improved large diesel engines driving D C generators and electric drive motors, which resulted in cheaper motive power. This change over was so complete that the annual tonnage of coal dropped from 125 million to less than 2 million tons in 15 years. 'Actually, now it requires some considerable interrogation and traveling to find a locomotive still operating on steam.

In the earliest days of mining coal the obvious method was by bord and pillar working. Longwall in Britain developed from this as an expedient to overcome bottlenecks arising from ? 1) increasing depth of seams causing roof control difficulties; and 2) ventilation problems. This system became almost universal particularly in the thicker seams, where faces of up to one mile in length were not uncommon. Coal getting in these faces was usually by pick and shovel, filled into small waggons of up to 15 cwts capacity. These waggons ran on rails laid alongside the coal face and were often taken away from the face to the main haulage roads by horses. The roof was supported by rigid props and the wastes were normally controlled by strip packing. This system of mining was very flexible and worked well down to sections of about 3'6"

Unrecognized roof beam failures resulted in 69% of the falls of ground injuries occurring in underground U.S. stone mines from 1990 to 1996. Field investigations at 45 underground stone mines suggest that excessive beam sag or deflection is the principal unstable roof behavior characteristics associated with miner injuries. Laminated roof structures, common in most underground stone mines, allow the immediate roof to separate into distinct beams. The timely determination of roof beam deflection could provide stone miners with advanced knowledge of potentially hazardous roof. Existing methods to assess roof conditions consist of observational and monitoring techniques. Observational techniques include open drillholes, sounding, wedging, and borescopes. Monitoring techniques include scratch tools, extensometers, telltales, Miners Helpers, and Guardian Angels1. Miners have difficulty utilizing these techniques because roof beams are located an average of 8 m(26.5 ft) above the miner’s head in environments that are dark, dusty and noisy and these deflections are measured in millimeters of movement. To help mitigate the potential for falls of ground injuries to underground stone miners, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed the Roof Monitoring Safety System (RMSS) to aid in monitoring dangerous levels of roof beam deflection. If enough site-specific information is collected and placed on highly visible maps, individual mining operations could establish general guidelines for responding to specific roofbeam deflection occurrences. This would help in implementing a pro-active, comprehensive roof control plan for reducing falls of ground injuries.

A process for producing reductive bleach in-situ in kaolin slurries has been developed. The bleach is formed by mixing an iron sponge powder (-325M) with slurry treated with SO2. The process has been successfully demonstrated in production, and applied to several grades. The color, brightness, and viscosity of the bleached product is equivalent to or better than that of product bleached with commercial sodium hydrosulfite . The tested products can be bleached at a cost, which is 38-54% of those associated with the use of commercial bleach.

Gasification of carbonaceous energy carriers with simultaneousCO2 removal is a new and interesting alternative e.g. ZECA [1],HyPr-Ring [2], AER [3]. In the ZECA process lime supported Hydrogen generation from Methane is a basic process unit and the Hypr-RING process investigates Hydrogen generation from hard coal with addition of lime. Here the main objective is a further development of the AER process. High energetic efficiencies for gasification in the range of 90 % can be achieved if the humidity of the energy carrier is already sufficient for steam reforming reaction. The aim of the overall process is upgrading coals and biomass yielding into three valuable products: • A fuel gas ready for power generation • A CO2gas stream containing >95%, ready for transportation to disposal or chemical fixation • A pre-calcined feed for cement clinkering consisting ofCaO and coal ash Thus power generation and gasification are independent. A promising industrial application is the combination of gasification and cement production. Then only one additional reactor is required and the precalcination mass flows have to be increased.

A wide variety of subsidence prediction methods exist. They can be classified into empirical methods and mechanistic models. The empirical methods include profile functions and influence functions (Brzuner, 1973a,b; Kratzsch, 1974; Berry, 1978; Hood et al., 1981), the two empirical approaches of most practical value, if only be- cause they are readily programmed on calculators or computers. The profile functions have the advantage that they allow for ready determination of the necessary empirical parameters from field observations. They have the disadvantage of being restricted to subsidence calculations at a very limited number of points or lines above very simple (rectangular) mine geometries. This reduces greatly their practical applicability for damage predictions, which usually require estimates of strains, slopes or curvatures at structures that have arbitrary position and orientation with respect to planned mine excavations. Influence functions can be used to calculate subsidence at any point near an excavation of any in- seam outline. The main difficulty associated with empirical influence functions is the lack of uniqueness in the relation between subsidence and its cause, the convergence distribution over a mined excavation and its immediate surroundings. A secondary practical difficulty is the need for fairly arbitrary adjustments near the excavation edges, usually in the form of compensation zones (e.g. Brsuner, 1973; Hood et al., 1981). Determination of the appropriate empirical constants in influence functions is facilitated greatly when a direct mathematical connection exists between influence and profile function (several examples are given by Brauner, 1973 and by Hood et al., 1981), so that field data can be used to determine the parameters through backfitting of the profile functions, which is considerably simpler and more direct than backfitting of influence functions.

Operation and maintenance of California?s water tunnels is an important factor and vital link in California?s infrastructure. These tunnels are owned and operated by a variety of large and small private and public water and power utility companies, municipal agencies, and irrigation districts. Visionary pioneers such as Michael O?Shaughnessy (San Francisco Hetch Hetchy Water Supply System), William Mulholland (Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and Metropolitan Water District of Southern California?s Colorado River Aqueduct), and John Eastwood (Southern California Edison Big Creek Hydroelectric Project) built large and small water supply, irrigation and hydroelectric tunnels, which have supplied environmentally friendly-water supply, renewable electricity, and uninterrupted service to a burgeoning population and economy. This paper introduces these pioneers and describes several case histories and lessons learned during condition assessment and rehabilitation of tunnels providing enlightenment of California?s vital water projects.

An AIME transaction by P.L. Allsman (1960), "Analysis of Explosive Action in Breaking Rock," contains many useful concepts applicable to blast design. Of special interest was the derivation of a heave blasting burden formula, which is important in establishing the maximum burden. Unfortunately, its derivation contains a fundamental error and then a compensating one. This formula was: [ ] The derivation used the impulse-momentum principle, with a 0.3 m thick (1 ft thick) radius of rock mass being acted on by an explosive impulse. However, the rock weight was not converted to mass by dividing by the gravitational constant. This mistake can be verified by checking the units in the formula, which resolve into m%-sec instead of meters. Adding the gravitational constant corrects this: [ ] If the minimum velocity is now taken as 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec), as was recommended, excessively large burdens result. Any appropriate rock velocity should be capable of throwing the rock mass a minimum distance so that the swell needed for breakage can occur. Unless the burden is extremely small and the bench height is very high, it is unlikely that a velocity of only 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec) will be sufficient. A review of the literature indicates that average rock velocities observed by camera studies typically range from 15 to 30 m/sec (50 to 100 ft per sec) (duPont deNemours and Co., 1977; Tansey, 1979). On this basis, a minimum rock velocity of about 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) would be expected and not 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). When a velocity of 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) is inserted into the corrected formula, the results approximate those of the original formula with a velocity of 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). Butler Taconite, operated by the Hanna Mining Company, is an Iron ore pelletizing operation that is located on the Western end of the Mesabi Iron Range in Northeastern Minnesota. The operation mines low-grade taconite ore and through primary crushing, two stage grinding, magnetic separation, agglomerating and indurating, produces 2.6 million annual tons of high quality, 66% iron pellets. Mining and stripping is done with 13 - M100 trucks and 5 - 12 cu. yd. shovels. The operating processes in the concentrator and pellet plant are primarily con¬trolled through a centralized control room and monitored by a PDP l140 computer. During 1969 and 1970, a re-organization of the Company took place. Through this re-organization, each mine unit was analyzed and studied to determine the proper staffing of the internal departments. At this time, it was decided to continue with further detailed studies of the Maintenance Department with the intent to reduce maintenance costs. Maintenance costs at the time of the re-organization were 38.6% of the total mine operating cost. The preliminary study indicated that the Maintenance Department had a system of maintenance, as a matter of fact, it had a separate system in each sub-maintenance division and in some of the sub-divisions each foreman had a system of his own. Therefore, from the data collected, it was decided to develop one system of maintenance that could be utilized throughout the entire operation. To determine the type of system suitable to all phases of the operation, detailed time and method studies were conducted. All types of maintenance tasks performed at the operation were studied. The data collected was analyzed and the recommended improved methods were reviewed with the Maintenance Superintendent and his staff. The new improved methods that were accepted as feasible, were introduced into the system immediately.
