Industrial grinding machines used in the mineral processing industries are mostly of the tumbling mill type. These mills exist in various types: ball, rod, pebble, autogenous, and semi-autogenous. Balls and rods are traditionally media shapes used in the tumbling mills. In resent years, as an alternative to balls, grinding charges with various shapes are being used. Cylpebs are slightly tapered cylindrical grinding charges with length equaling diameter, and all the edges being radiused. Cylpebs of equal diameter and length have 50% greater surface area and 45% greater weight than balls of the same material. In addition, they have 9% higher bulk density than steel balls, or 12% higher bulk density than cast balls. An important advantage of cylpebs over balls is that cylpebs produce narrower granulometric distribution due to their shapes. However, some discrepancies were found in the literature regarding the milling performance of cylpebs in comparison with balls (Chi, 2004). In recent studies, Chi (2004) has provided detailed information on cylpebs and has compared these to balls in relation to media mass, size distribution, surface area, and input specific energy. Ipek (2006) has investigated the effects of cylpebs and balls with equal mass and surface area on the breakage rate of quartz, using cylpebs and balls separately. Similarly, Lameck and Moys (2006) have investigated the effects of balls and worn balls on breakage rate of material using worn balls as grinding environment. However, no study has attempted to investigate the effects of grinding environment other than balls on the brekage distribution. As indicated by Prasher (1987), the breakage distribution function is independent of the following variables in ball mills: hold-up (Mika et al., 1967; Kelsall et al. 1969), mill speed and ball load (Herbst and Fuerstenau, 1972), media load and ball density (Kelsall et al., 1973), mill diameter (Malghan and Fuerstenau, 1976), and powder charge (Shoji et al. 1980). The aim of the present paper is to compare the effects of cylpebs and balls on the breakage distribution function of quartz with respect to same mass and same surface area. BACKGROUND Comminution as a rate process is called kinetic approach. Studies on the kinetic approach are reviewed by Oner (2001). Oner states that grinding kinetics are based on studies by Kolmogorov in 1941 and that Robert (1950) is the first to suggest this approach. Later, Melzak, Loeveday, and Reid have improved the grinding kinetics equation; and, Austin and Lynch have conducted two basic studies on the analytical solutions of these equations. Considering the results of studies comparing the size reduction mechanisms, it has been accepted that breakage constitutes of two operations. These two basic operations, first defined by Epstein (1948), are those of selection of material for breakage and the distribution of breakage material to particle sizes smaller than the initial size (Lynch, 1977). Epstein defined the two operations as: ? Pn(y), the probability of breakage of a particle size in the nth step of the breakage process. ? F(x,y), the cumulative distributions by weight of particles of size x<y arising from the breakage of a unit mass of a size y. Probability of breakage is called a selection or a breakage-rate function (Si). Characteristics size distribution after breakage is called a breakage distribution or appearance function (Bi,j). Due to the difficulties in representing particle size distributions mathematically and constantly, the batch equation based on particle size fraction is suggested. Thus, as is the case in breakage distribution and specific rate of breakage, the breakage parameters were defined by batch grinding experiments conducted in laboratories (Oner, 2001). When effective breakage occurs in the mill, the breakage of material with single feed size fraction usually fits first order grinding kinetics and the specific rate of breakage values can be calculated through the slope of semi-log plot. The values of the breakage distributions are deduced from the size distributions at short grinding times where there is mainly size 1 material breaking and only small amount of smaller sizes to rebreak (Austin et. al., 1984). B values can be calculated by using BII. [ ] where j is the top size of the charge, Pi(t) is the cumulative percent undersize of i th size interval at the short grinding time which gives no more than about 30% broken out of the top size interval. Cumulative primary breakage distribution, Bi,j, is also defined in an empirical form by [ ] where xi is the top size and Bi,j is the weight fraction of primary breakage products. The parameters F, ? and ß define the size distribution of the material being ground. On plotting size versus Bi,j on log scale, the slope of the lower portion of the curve gives the value of ?, the slope of the upper portion of the curve gives the value of ß, and F is the intercept as in Fig.1. This winter I decided to join the other 36 Freeporters who belong to the AIME; and, I applied for membership in the Society of Mining Engineers. To queries as to my interests in the Society, I had this answer: our principal challenge -- more so today, than at any time in my nearly 25 years in the industry -- is discovery and development of new sources of raw materials. I want to join you in meeting this challenge.

of high specific gravity, resistant minerals that form from mechanical concentration by waves, currents, and winds in marginal-marine environments. These sediments are enriched in critical minerals such as titanium, zirconium, and REE. Cretaceous beach-placer sandstones are found in the Colorado Plateau of northwestern New Mexico. Originally discovered by airborne radiometric surveys for uranium in the 1950s, these beach-placer sandstones are being re-examined with modern methods as potential sources for critical minerals. Selected beach-placer sandstones have been sampled, mapped with ground radiometric surveys, and analyzed with whole-rock and trace element geochemical methods. Mineralogy is being determined with optical methods, XRD, and EMPA. Zircon, rutile, ilmenite, and monazite are the primary heavy minerals of interest found in the studied deposits. Initial results show that the sandstones contain up to 1.4% total REE, 29.4% TiO2, and an estimated 4.9% ZrO2. Chondrite-normalized REE diagrams show distinct light REE and minor heavy REE enrichment, as well as pronounced negative Eu anomalies for each deposit.

Even though the economy of the United States remains in recession ? or not, depending on which economist you listen to ? muicipalities still need improved transportation, water and wastewater transit systems. And they are willing to spend the necessary funds on those systems, provided they are affordable, environ-mentally friendly and sustainable. From June 20-23, professionals in the tunneling and underground construction industry from around the world gathered in Portland, OR to learn new ways of providing those systems using the latest technology available. The North American Tunneling (NAT) conference attracted 803 attendees and 108 exhibiting suppliers of equipment and services.

The Pipeline gold ore body was discovered in Lander County, NV in March 1991. Construction of the new mine and mill did not start until early March 1996. The $289-million project was placed on a fast-track development schedule upon completion of permitting and corporate approval. The mine and mill were commissioned 11 months after the start of construction and the project ended up $40 million under budget. Project design and construction management were provided by Placer Dome Project Development Division (PDD). History The Cortez Joint Venture has operated in northeast Lander County since the late 1960s. The business structure is comprised of 60% Placer Dome and 40%Kennecott Exploration. Throughout the years, production has been from several small open-pit deposits— Cortez, Horse Canyon, Gold Acres and now Pipeline.

Measurement of gamma radiation occurring in nature to characterize geological formations has been widely recognized in mineral exploration. Different methods and apparatuses have been developed for drill hole logging purposes. Geological formations vary in amount of naturally emitted gamma radiation. A gamma signature from a geological formation is captured by utilizing different types of gamma detectors. A natural gamma radiation detector (NGRD) can be used to control mining whenever there is a significant difference between the radiation levels in the mineral or ore being mined and the waste materials surrounding the ore. Surface miners, such as the one shown in Figure 1, can precisely control the elevation of the cutter as the machine moves over the surface of the formation. This type of machine is predominantly used in selective mining operations, e.g. surface coal mining. If there is a means to know the position of the cutter relative to the interface between the ore and waste, the miner can recover all or most all of the valuable mineral with very little out-of-seam dilution. This paper discusses the results of a successful application of gamma detectors to control a surface miner at one of North American Coal Corporations? locations - Red Hills Mine. The mine has nine coal seams in total with thicknesses ranging from 12? to 60?. The bottom six seams (Figure 2) are minable. The mine has complex geology and a significant amount of annual rainfall (4.7 ft). The mine produces approximately 3.5 million tons of coal and about 40 bcy of overburden per year. The operation utilizes diverse mining equipment including Dragline Marion 8200, electric shovel P&H 2800, Caterpillar end dump trucks CAT 785 and 789; bulldozers CAT D11, D10, D8, and D6. Coal is mainly extracted by utilizing a Wirtgen SM 4200 surface miner that is loading CAT 785 trucks with high volume coal bodies and payload of 150 t. Operational cutting depth is 24 inches with maximum cutting depth of 36 inches. Surface miner operators determine a cutting depth based on multiple cues, the most important being visual observations of a coal seam being cleaned or mined. The cleaning process involves removal of the last foot of waste material covering the coal seam. This is one of two critical phases in the coal extraction process. If, during the cleaning process, an operator sets a cutting head too deep, valuable product is wasted. If it is set too shallow, waste material is left to be mined with the coal. The second critical phase occurs in the last cut on the interface between the coal and waste material at the bottom of the coal seam. If the cutting head goes deeper than favorable, then waste material is delivered to a power plant.

Over the past few decades a great deal of effort has gone into characterizing the effects of frother type and concentration in flotation using a variety of two-phase techniques. Whilst useful and informative, this research still does not assist in the selection of suitable frothers for three-phase industrial-scale froths. This paper investigates the effects of frother type and concentration in a three-phase industrial froth. The objective was to determine if progress could be made in terms of understanding the behavior of frothers in flotation and understanding how they affect the sub-processes occurring in the pulp and froth phases and, ultimately, the metallurgical performance of a flotation cell.

To gather additional field data from the western United States, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) installed an array of field instrumentation at a longwall coal mine in Central Utah. The purpose of this field site was to monitor ground movement and changes in pressure during mining where conditions include massive, stiff overburden and relatively deep cover. To accomplish this, field instrumentation was installed in the two-entry gate road between the fifth and sixth longwall panel in the current mining district.

In 2004, the engineers at the Deer Creek Mine located near Huntington, Utah initiated the ventilation planning to exploit a remote area of the mine?s reserves. This area was located under a mountain which would not allow for the incorporation of an additional shaft or portal access near the proposed longwall panels. With this constraint along with the desire to maintain a two entry gate road system and the expected condition of frequent coal wash outs a ventilation plan was established. Different options were examined that included; increasing the current exhaust fan power, adding another exhaust fan installation, converting the ventilation fans in the active portion of the mine to a forcing system, and modifying the ventilation system in the active area of the mine to a push-pull system. The push-pull ventilation system was ultimately selected. This paper details the design process of the ventilation system upgrade, the procurement process for the new fans, and the new fan startup testing.

With the rise in global demand for pure copper, there is an urgent need to consider the processing of low-grade chalcopyrite ores. Ammoniacal leaching solutions have been reported as effective and efficient leachants for the dissolution of chalcopyrite. This work reports on different parameters that influence the leaching kinetics of a Nigerian chalcopyrite-rich siderite ore obtained from the Wase local government area of Plateau state, Nigeria, and assayed as 11.30 weight percent copper.

The Owner Procurement Process or OPP is a proven, viable alternative contract delivery method that is potentially applicable to many tunnel projects. Using the OPP, the owner specifies and procures major tunnel construction items such as tunnel boring machines and tunnel linings and provides them to a tunnel excavation contractor in order to manage risk and accelerate project schedule. However, due to industry perceptions regarding potential owner risk, it is seldom considered or is rejected out of hand. In fact, past performance demonstrates that the process significantly minimizes owner, contractor and over-all project risk and mitigates the impact of any claims and differing site conditions. The paper outlines how the process should be structured to achieve schedule, cost, quality and risk management benefits. Potential and perceived disadvantages are discussed and how the process can be structured to mitigate or avoid them. The planned implementation of this process on the tunnels for the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in San Jose, California is discussed.

The largest TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) tunnels are typically along modest slopes, but not always. Occasionally high slope angles are required beyond the capabilities of conventional open trough trailing conveyors. A 2019 project required a large TBM to ascend to an incline angle of 25°. A Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor could easily solve the high angle conveying problem but such a system must include all of the features of the conventional trailing conveyor, particularly the ability to extend with the TBM advance. The writer responded to the challenge and developed a TBM trailing Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor with all of the needed features. The invention (U.S.A. patents awarded October, 2021 and November, 2022) however goes beyond the 2019 project requirements and extends to any high angle incline. This writing first presents the broad Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor development, then its use in various construction and tunneling projects prior to this TBM Sandwich Belt trailing conveyor invention. Finally we present the new TBM Trailing Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor with all of its features and implications.

Among the methods of mineral processing, gravity concentration methods are, probably, those which have lower costs, higher capacities and lower operational complexity. In order to be really effective, these methods require a feed size distribution in which the particles are liberated. Further, there must be a significant difference (usually higher than 1-1.5) among the real densities of the particles. However, in most cases, the traditional gravity concentrators (jigs, shaking tables, spirals and dense medium hydrocyclones) lose efficiency (sharpness of cut and recovery) when the mean diameter of particles are lower than 0.05mm and the difference among densities are smaller than 1. Most gravity concentrators developed in the last 20 years are based on the use of centrifugal forces that create large "apparent gravitational gradient" seeking to overcome the limitations of particles size distribution. This paper presents the experience of the CVRD Research Center in evaluation and development of new process based on using this new generation of gravity concentrators.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are considered critical minerals for industrial and defense sectors. REEs are not as rare as the word “rare” portrays; yet, the exploitable and/or profitable deposits of REEs may be found only in certain geographical areas. The political and social conditions characterizing these areas may not always be in favor of mining operations. These conditions are imposing the need for extra consideration on the geopolitical constraints prior to any decision-making and before any mining project begins. This study assesses the risk related to mining projects for areas that feature REE deposits based on a geopolitical viewpoint. Probable ranking differences between the current assessment and a 2015 assessment are discussed. The comparative indicators used and the appraisal procedure applied in this comparison are based on a number of different geopolitical indicators. Several ranking changes occurred between 2015 and 2019.

The Green Mining Industry Initiative is a risk management strategy for the future of the mining industry. Defining the Risks The bad news is peak commodities, energy and economic crisis and stock markets collapsing are the issues that are already hitting everyone?s bottom line and draining the treasuries of every mining company around the world. Higher energy costs are affecting the bottom line more than ever before, which is creating more risk for companies. Mining companies have major land positions around the world and they have major energy needs. Uncontrollable increases in energy costs, increased regulations for diesel fuel emissions and energy intermittencies are costing mining companies more time, money, and man-power, which are cutting into profits and hitting the balance sheet. The good news is, there are practical energy solutions which are off the grid, tried and true methods which can be implemented in a cost-effective manner and will increase profitability and save shareholder values as well as energy security for these companies and their projects. To date, most of the mining resource industry has not yet considered or used other forms of power like clean, sustainable, or alternative energy for their own energy needs. The reasons have primarily been pushback from the mining industry due to beliefs of older technologies in alternative energy, a lack of understanding of the cost advantages long term, and perceptions of environmental relativity.

Newmont Gold&apos;s methods for deposit modeling vary, depending on geology, mining and processing methods, economic feasibility and availability of historical information. It is argued that successful modeling requires understanding these factors, knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the various modeling techniques and being flexible in selecting the appropriate methods. Newmont is one of the world&apos;s largest gold mining companies, with operations in the United States, Peru, Mexico, Indonesia and Uzbekistan. And it is active in exploration worldwide. At the end of 1996, Newmont declared a total reserve of 1.15 equity kt (37.1 million equity oz) of gold and 2.17 equity Mt (2.39 million st) of copper. The gold deposits managed by Newmont totaled 752 Mt (829 million st) of ore containing 1.28 kt (41.3 million oz) of gold averaging 1.71 g/t (0.05 oz/st). In addition, Newmont is developing a porphyry copper-gold deposit that totals 9.1 Gt (1 billion st) of ore containing 380 t (12.1 million oz) of gold and 4.82 Mt (5.32 million st) of copper. (In May 1997, Newmont Gold Co. merged with Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corp., thus increasing Newmont&apos;s reserves to 1.72 kt or 55.2 million oz of gold and 2.17 Mt or 2.39 million st of copper.)

This paper presents the results from the investigation of the application of thermal fragmentation in Australian hard rock underground narrow-vein mining. Two geologically similar samples from an underground narrow-vein hard rock gold mine were collected to obtain a measure of the technology’s ability to recover ore by the creation of large thermal openings to assess the applicability of the thermal method. Particle size distribution showed a higher generation of fine product, − 2 mm, by thermal fragmentation compared with selective blasting by 31%. The Bond work index for thermal ore (12.62 kWh/t) is half to that of the blasted ore value (25.32 kWh/t). The average grindability obtained for the thermal ore sample was greater than the blasted sample by a factor of 2.44, a higher value indicating a decrease in the energy required to grind. The thermal fragmentation method generates product with higher dissolution of gold in cyanide, by 14% for the − 9.5 + 2 mm size fraction samples. Additionally, the thermal fragmentation results in higher production of − 9.5 + 2 mm material by 15 % compared with selective blasting.

The depletion of good-quality phosphate resources, coupled by a need to supply acceptable products at a rapid rate, while meeting the specifications of fertilizer chemical plants, is of significant concern to the phosphate industry, particularly the production of concentrates with tolerable dolomite content. Tremendous efforts have been made in the past to develop an efficient and economical process that can effectively reject dolomite. However, dolomite removal continues to plague the phosphate industry due to several process-specific challenges being encountered with various beneficiation technologies. In this regard, detailed characterization of phosphate reserves is crucial to understand textural limitations and help design appropriate strategies to achieve quality products. In this paper, the development of procedures to establish dolomite rejection/francolite recovery curves for gravity preconcentration of pebble phosphate from Central Florida is described using high-speed X-ray computed tomography (HSXCT). The developed procedure is illustrated with the analysis of high MgO pebble phosphate samples (10.39 mm × 1 mm) received from South Pasture and Four Corners locations operated by the Mosaic company. The rejection/recovery curves were calculated for each sample for five different particle size classes to observe the trend in rejection/recovery with variation in particle size. In order to evaluate the reliability of the HSXCT data, analysis using the high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT) technique was performed on one particular sample (FC-3-1). Finally, to assess the separation efficiency, the HSXCT and HRXCT rejection/recovery curves obtained were compared to experimental gravity preconcentration results reported in the literature. In this way, liberation limitations for gravity preconcentration in the processing of pebble phosphate have been established based on X-ray computed tomography analysis.

In the past decade Australia has seen the development, construction and commissioning of three complex processing plants for the treatment of lateritic nickel ores. These have all been based on high pressure acid leaching (HPAL) for extraction of nickel and cobalt into solution, followed by solid liquid separation in a CCD circuit. However, flowsheets for separation and purification of the nickel and cobalt diverge markedly. The existing plants have been commissioned with varying degrees of success, with a variety of problems ranging from materials of construction to inadequate design. While the process problems are not insurmountable, there is much room for improvement. Currently there are several new HPAL plants at the feasibility or financing stage. All of these have adopted one of the existing flowsheets. Most of the enhancements have focused on increasing autoclave size. It is now time to assess the success and failures of the three existing plants and incorporate this experience in a design for productivity, efficiency and reliability. Towards this end, this paper discusses aspects of flowsheet optimization, materials of construction and engineering design.
