It has been observed that the rock debris of a strain burst event are often in the mode of tensile fracture. Seismic waves could create tensile fractures in the material nearby reflecting surfaces, such as at the boundary of the fracture zone and the rock surface of an underground space. The fractured rock could be ejected to the space when the seismic waves are powerful enough. The average ejection velocity of the ejected rock is a measure of the magnitude of a burst event. The ejection velocity is directly associated with the released energy from the seismic waves and with the strain energy stored in the rock prior to the burst. In some cases, the seismic wave induced tensile fracture and the energy conversion occur in successive moments during bursting. In this paper, tensile fracture caused by seismic waves is investigated through an 1D model. The relationship of the average ejection velocity of the ejected rock in a rockburst event is analytically established with the energy of the seismic waves and the strain energy stored in the rock.

Newmont Gold Company has advantageously used the capabilities of mineral oxidizing bacteria to develop a process for pretreatment of low grade sulfidic and carbonaceous-sulfidic refractory gold ores. The biooxidation process results in the oxidation of the sulfidic minerals with increased exposure of gold for subsequent gold recovery. The biooxidized carbonaceous-sulfidic ores cannot be heap leached with cyanide because of the "preg-robbing" characteristics of the carbonaceous matters in the ores. An alternative heap leach process using ammonium thiosulfate was developed to extract gold from the "preg-robbing" biooxidized ores. The ammonium thiosulfate leach process has been successfully practiced both in laboratory and pilot plant testing. Satisfactory test results encourage the continuation of process development.

The market for titanium feedstocks (ilmenite, rutile,synthetic rutile and slag) is driven primarily by offtake from the titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigment industry. The pigment sector depends on the performance of the global economy. Titanium sponge is the first stage of titanium metal manufacture. It constitutes a minor component (3 percent) of overall demand for titanium feed-stocks. Production and consumption TiO2 pigment consumption in 2004 was estimated to be 4.63 Mt (5.1 million st), up 7.6 percent from 2003. It was driven by strong demand in most regions. In the United States, apparent TiO2 pigment consumption rebounded by 5.4 percent (highest growth rate since 1997) to an estimated 1.12 Mt (1.23 million st), following the decrease in demand during 2003. Chinese TiO2 pigment consumption continued its strong upward trend, increasing by 10 percent to 598 kt (659,000 st) in 2004.

The new, 2.600 m long pipe under the river Elbe in Hamburg/Germany required for 2 traffic lanes, emergency lane and space for utilities a boring diameter of 14,20 m(46,6 ft). According the geology (glacial deposits consisting of clay, sand and marl, all containing big boulders) a Slurry-Shield with crusher was selected. With a minimum cover of 7 m and a maximum pressure of 5,6 bar extensive ground treatment was necessary to make the drive feasible. The machine contains a lot of new developments. The drive was finished in spring 2000 so all experiences can be reported. A special risk sharing contract avoided completely litigation.

The mining industry's image is molded by what the general public knows, or thinks they know about mining. As we prepared for the production of Caterpillar's educational film, Common Ground, we first had to find out exactly what the public perceptions about mining were. Before we could educate people about mining, we had to find out what they already thought. As we broke down those perceptions, we were able to narrow our focus to relevant, realistic approaches for the film. We found out what people didn't know about mining. And most importantly, we singled out the facts they should know... facts that could create more favorable attitudes. This research was instrumental in our final direction for the Common Ground project.

Many papers 'have been publihed on the role of the bacterium.Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds, and years of research have established the following environmental factors, which influence biological oxidation. 1. Oxygen is required for the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds to the sulfate form. Sufficient oxygen. is available from the air, consequently, it is of importance to get the air to the bacteria. 2. The bacteria are active in the pH range 1.4 3.5. Maximum activity occurs at pH 2..0 - 2.8. 3. -In order to allow the bacterial populations to expand, certain essential nutrients must be available. Nitrogen has to be supplied for the production of body protein, and ammonia is the source most readily accepted by the bacteria. Carbon dioxide is the only utilizable source of carbon and the small amounts available in air are the primary source of this element. Small amounts of phosphate, manganese,, potassium,. calcium. and magnesium are also required. These trace minerals are available from the water and host rock in sufficient quantities. 4. Water is required as a carrier for the oxygen carbon dioxide and other nutrients, as-well as a solvent for the metallic sulfates produced. The bacteria are motile and the water allows the bacterial populations to spread:: bacterial activity ceases if the equilibrium relative humidity drops below 100%. 5.-optimum bacterial activity occurs at temperatures of 34 - 35°.C (93 -.95° F). All activity ceases above 45° C. At lower temperatures, activity its dramatically decreased, but there is still a significant amount at 10 - 11° C.- Thiobacillus ferruoxidans has been isolated from a mine with a year round temperature of 3° C. 6. Unpublished results from our laboratory show that biological leach ore oxidation takes place during the rest periods at the same rate as during the wet leaching periods providing there is a film of moisture remaining around the particles. Optimum conditions can be readily achieved in the laboratory, but application of our laboratory knowledge to commercial leaching dumps is riot as simple. Attempts to achieve improved environmental conditions for the bacteria in leaching dumps would require substantial capital investment and careful planning of leaching operations. This paper

KMG Minerals, Inc., a mica-feldspar-quartz producer in Kings Mountain, N.C., uses about 50% of its plant's -200 mesh slimes to manufacture brick. However, the company is unable to market the remaining 50% of this fine mineral mixture. The NCSU Minerals Research Laboratory operated a pilot plant to process these slimes to produce an additional product. The process, consisting of blunging and hydraulic sizing, was designed to separate a kaolin-enriched -270 mesh product from the bulk of the coarser +270 mesh "grit" minerals. Size analysis showed that this product was 80% finer than 20 microns and 50% finer than 6 microns (in equivalent spherical diameter). An evaluation indicated that it is a hydrous aluminum silicate that might be suitable in the filler and extender markets for traffic paint, some types of plastics, joint cements, and dusting compounds. Because of its high viscosity, it will be difficult to use more than a small percentage in cast ceramic bodies. However, it might be possible to use up to 10% in extruded ceramic bodies (i.e., electrical porcelain). The 15.2 cm (6 in,) diameter Linatex Hydrosizer was tested using a range of teeter water flowrates, so that the net rise velocity was varied from 0.10 cm/s to 0.40 cm/s. The solid feed rate to the sizer was maintained at approximately 1.1 t/hr/m2 (0.12 ton/hr/ft2). Tests were run using both "shallow" (i.e., 6 in.) and "deep" (i.e., 15 in. teetered beds. The best overall result was obtained when the sizer was operated with the "deep" teeter bed and a net rise velocity of 0.10 cm/s. About 97% of the +270 mesh material was rejected and approximately 79% of the -270 mesh material was recovered in a 14% solids slurry.

A low grade iron ore is mined underground at Grace Mine using the panel caving method. Most of the development work is located in footwall. The runways for LHD equipments are heavily supported with steel sets on five foot centers. The sets are embedded in two to three feet of concrete. The initial cost of support is one of the largest single costs of production. During the process of ore-win¬ning, supports frequently fail, necessitating expensive repair. There is no systematic pattern to the failure of supports. A rock mechanics program was launched to isolate causes and their relative contributions to the failure of supports. The preliminary results are presented. A typical portion of a runway is instrumented to monitor rock mass movements around the runway and the corresponding response of supports as various mining activities are carried out in the neighborhood. We believe that such a program is a prerequisite to any remedial measure to alleviate pressure problem at Grace Mine.

A new tunnel lining was designed for rehabilitation of the existing unlined Weehawken Tunnel in New Jersey. Structural assessment using beam spring models was performed for the lining design as a drained structure at the invert with a waterproofing umbrella. Empirical Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guideline was typically adopted for estimating hydrostatic pressure, which recommends full hydrostatic pressure at the crown and ten or twenty-five percent gradual reduction from the initial pressure toward the invert. Finite element seepage analyses were conducted for the actual conditions based on anticipated drainage behind the lining and impact on the structural design. Considerations will be provided on the existing guideline for estimating hydrostatic pressures.

As the demand for most industrial minerals on the world market continues to climb, educational institutions maintain traditional policy in emphasizing chiefly metallic ore deposits and energy resources in addition to the general disciplines. In spite of their increasing importance, few universities exhibit great depth with respect to industrial minerals courses due to the shortage of specialized faculty in a category this broad. As new ideas are formulated and technological advances are developed in the field of industrial minerals, the classroom still exists as a student's primary source of information. This opportunity to give today's students the benefit of modern developements has not been utilized to its utmost potential.

This paper identifies the components of belt conveyor shifting force as a vertical force. Pv, horizontal force, Ph, and longitudinal force, P1. A method for estimation of these forces is proposed, which relates their value to the properties of the conveyor structure and rails, shifting operation parameters, and other site-specific conditions. The effect of this force on shifter behaviour is analysed and guidelines are developed for selection of a suitable shifter. Also discussed are the requirements of the shifting operation for other equipment.

The mechanism shown here (Fig. 1) may not be all that it appears to be. To many of you it may look like a hopper car, a thing of mobility, in which you would ship coal, ores, limestone, or other bulk materials. It is approximately 50 feet long, 12 feet high, and can be placed on tracks which are on approximate 14 foot centers. But far too often in the past, and all too often today, this mechanism has been made to serve as an immobile storage box, with its primary role -- the transportation of products, seemingly incidental to the storage function. Our engineering training teaches us to conserve resources, despite some of the popular and misconceived philosophies being advanced these days. Those of you who work for companies with traffic departments know that they are always striving to reduce the price which is paid to move your mine products. Today, let's consider and analyze the ways in which the cost of transporting your mine products might be reduced, based on particular reference to coal. Bear in mind that in this context, cost and price are not necessarily synonymous. Until a few years ago, most coal and other bulk materials handled by railroads moved under standard tariff rules. These rules, which still exist today, provided transportation vehicles (railroad cars) for extended periods at no added price to the shipper or receiver. "Normal" free time rules would permit a car to be held for a maximum of 48 hours without charge; however, in the case of coal, there is a rule which, subject to liberal rules as to the

Introduction Heavy media separation (HMS), also called dense media or float¬sink separation, is one of the newer forms of gravity concentration. Though the concept can be traced to the last century, the process has enjoyed its major growth since 1940. Heavy liquid separation is a mutation. The heavy media process is used extensively to clean coal and for the concentration of a wide variety of ores such as those of iron, lead-zinc, chrome, manganese, tin, tungsten, fluorspar, magnesite, sylvite, garnet, diamonds, gravel, etc. It may be used where ever a significant density difference occurs between two minerals, and commercial separations are typically made in the range of 1.3 to 3.8 sp gr. The particle size treated ranges downward from 6-8 in. top size. Particles greater than about 1/16-in. (10 mesh) may be treated in a "static" bath, though for reasons of separation efficiency, + 1/2 -in- feed is usually preferred. For particles less than this size, separation in a heavy media cyclone is generally used. The flowsheet of a typical heavy media process, in this case one using a ferrous medium, is shown in Fig. I. In essence, the process consists of: (1) preparation of the feed usually by wet screening to remove undesired fines, (2) heavy medium separation, and (3) removal and recovery of the medium from the separated products. Many muta¬tions of the basic scheme are possible and numerous options are possi¬ble. HMS offers the following potential advantages:12 1) Ability to make sharp separations. 2) Ability to change the specific gravity of separation quickly to meet changing conditions. 3) Ability to remove products continuously. 4) Ability to treat a broad size range of products. 5) Ease of start-up and shutdown without loss of separating efficiency. 6) Relatively low medium cost and low media losses. 7) Low operating and maintenance costs. 8) High capacity with the use of relatively little floor space. 9) Relatively low capital investment per ton of capacity. The process may be used to produce a finished concentrate, two finished concentrates, or a concentrate and a middling of differing quality, or a preconcentrate by rejection of unwanted gangue. It is an ideal method for the reprocessing of coarse waste dumps. The greatest use for the process lies in coal cleaning and in the preconcentration of ores. The relatively inexpensive heavy media process may be used advantageously to reject large quantities of coarsely crushed gangue. When used in this way, the process will allow: (1) the use of lower cost but less selective mining methods with the "overbreak" material being removed at the front end of the concentrator or preparation plant; (2) a substantial reduction in the quantity of ore that must be finely ground for subsequent mineral liberation and separa¬tion. Since comminution is often the single most expensive step in beneficiation, it is desirable to eliminate as many essentially barren pieces of rock as possible before the grinding step, (3) a decrease in overall plant capital cost per ton of concentrate since the size of the plant from the dense medium step onward will be smaller. Several general references are available,12-18 though much of the technical data on the process is widely scattered in the general litera¬ture. Heavy Liquid Separation Organic Liquids Given sufficient settling time, it is possible to make a perfect separa¬tion between two particles of differing density by placing them in a liquid whose density is intermediate between the two. This means of achieving a perfect separation has proven to be elusive because of problems in feed preparation, particle settling rates, operational considerations, and economic constraints. There are a wide variety of heavy liquids that could be used, most of them halogenated hydrocarbons, and a few typical examples are given in Table 4. These liquids are most commonly used in ore dressing for the laboratory fractionation of ore particles on the basis of specific gravity. Laboratory Separations. Using liquids typified by those given in Table 4, separations are made to develop either the standard washability curves used to estimate the response of a given sample to gravity concentration or to prepare a partition curve to evaluate the effective¬ness of a given gravity separation process or piece of equipment. A typical washability curve is given in Fig. 2.19 Such curves are generated for raw coal, e.g., by treating either the whole or various size fractions of the sample in a series of heavy liquids and analyzing the various specific gravity fractions so produced. The procedure is relatively simple for coal samples because of the ready availability of a wide variety of relatively low cost heavy liquids in the density range 1.2¬-2.0. For ores the problem is much more complicated, because only a few high density liquids, all of rather high cost, are available. Parti¬tion curves are generated in the same manner by treating the separated products in the same liquids. Greater details on the procedures to be used in heavy liquid separa¬tions are to be found in the literature (for coal, Refs. 13, 14 and 19 and for ore, Refs. 20 and 21). For testing coal, calcium and zinc chloride solutions have been used extensively in the past, though today halogenated hydrocarbons (available under the trade name Certigrav) are the preferred media. In the plant where the 800m diameter cyclone was tested, 500 STPH of 50m x 0 raw coal was pulped in a heavy medium tank and pumped originally to four 700mm heavy medium cyclones. For the test one of these units was replaced by an 800mm diameter cyclone with the subsequent feed pressure for both units sets at approximately 15.0 psi. Since this was a feed to zero plant, an appropriate bleed of heavy medium to the dilute medium circuit was established to en- sure that the cleaning of the 500m x 0.5mm raw coal would not be adversely affected by high levels of 0.5mm x 0 fine coal present in the heavy medium. The medium gravity measured varied between 1.41 and 1.43. During a three-hour test on June 10, 1983, the raw coal sample was collected from the feed belt while the clean coal and refuse samples were collected separately at proper locations along the product streams of the two different diameter cyclones. All of these samples were shipped to the laboratory for screen and sink- float analyses. The raw coal screen and ash analyses are shown in Table 1.

NFPA 502, Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges and Other Limited Access Highways establishes minimum fire protection and fire life safety requirements for road tunnels, bridges and other roadways where access by emergency responders is physically limited. The 2008 edition of NFPA 502 represents the Technical Committee?s consensus of current best practice for fire protection and life safety requirements for road tunnels, bridges and similarly limited access highways. Research of national and international test programs, design guidelines and regulating standards was per-formed and considered in an effort to establish a singular, comprehensive document representing a recognized base threshold of fire safety in these type facilities. This paper provides an overview of the more significant revisions including the application of fixed fire suppression systems, guidance on tenable environment, protection of structure and dangerous goods transport.

INTRODUCTION For the construction of several kinds of structures which pass through under railways, we have recently developed an effective and new tunnel construction method, aiming at more secure train operation during the construction as well as the rationalization in the construction works for such structures. Most important in carrying out the construction works for the structures under railways is how to maintain the safe operation of trains. For such construction works, temporary supporting structures and supplemental works have been often applied, for which high cost and long period for the construction have been required. While, this new tunnel construction method has the feature that it is capable of constructing definitive structures for various purposes, which, at the same time, acts as the temporary supporting members for protection of railways. Therefore, this method is now drawing much attention in that higher safety of train operation, low construction cost, and shorter construction period are accomplished, minimizing the period required for slackening the train speed during the construction works.

A recently developed model is used as a tool to optimize blast designs based on the continuing combination of full scale blast assessment and performance prediction. The use of this tool has allowed to evaluate present blasting practices and proposed designs through a better under-standing of the influence of the various blast parameters. The empirical model has a modular structure covering all aspects of blast performance including 30 fragmentation, potential rock damage and 30 muckpile profile prediction. The modules are assisted by a terrain model which is compatible to most mine mapping systems, and a blast design editor. The evaluation is summarized in a blast management module. Various studies have recently been undertaken using the model to qualify and improve blast designs with respect to wall stability, optimized fragmentation and muckpile distribution, as well as to the control of the environmental effects such as blast vibration and airblast overpressure. To verify the predictions of the modeling, full scale blast assessment techniques were used to qualify blast geometry, explosives and initiation performance, rock movement, muckpile distribution, near- and far-field vibration levels and airblast ovepressures. The model provides a tool to gain an improved understanding of blasting and blast control. The modeling results are presented in a visual form which allows simple comparisons of proposed blast designs. Additionally, the model can be used for detailed analysis and blast management.

The study of the excavation of large spherical cavities in salt formations first became of interest in 1958 when it was recognized that a large cavity could be of value in the study of the detection or concealment of underground nuclear explosions. Previously unpublished studies are reported in this paper and other studies reviewed relating to the excavation of large cavities in salt by mining ad by solution. Special emphasis is placed on the utilization of the Tatum salt dome (about 22 miles southwest of Hattiesburg, Mississippi) for the proposed site of a large excavated cavity. The U. S. Atomic Energy Commission has recently been studying such a cavity as Project Payette, but no details have yet been published. If Project Payette is determined feasible and work funded, it would eventually involve the firing of a nuclear explosive at the center of a large cavity.
