The Colorado portion of the Rio Grande rift is clearly defined physiographically from the south in the San Luis valley northward to the latitude of Leadville where sediments of the Dry Union Formation (Tweto, 1961) accumulated within the subsiding rift zone. To the north of Leadville is a system of faults active in the late Tertiary, including the Mosquito fault that offset a portion of the Climax mineralization (Wallace et al., 1968). Tweto (197B) describes remnants of Dry Union Formation against the Mosquito fault north of Dillon in the Blue River valley, so it is apparent that the rift and associated sediments extended well to the north of Leadville. Kelley (1952, 1954, 1956) and Chapin (1971) have noted in New Mexico that the Rio Grande rift is a series of en echelon basins, offset to the east, with constrictions connecting them (Fig. 1). In Colorado the structural basins are offset to the west. The net effect of all the rift zone basins in New Mexico and Colorado is an arcuate pattern (Fig. 1) abutting the Colorado Plateau and Sari Juan Volcanic Province on the west. The width of the rift system gradually decreases northward to about Leadville where rift definition is not apparent.

The in-situ deformability of a highly jointed basalt rock mass was determined by two distinctly different methods: one, by the NX- borehole jack method where the displacements of opposing curved platens were related to the applied hydraulic pressures, and; two, by the modified Goodman jack method where the tangential strains on the borehole walls were related to the induced tangential stresses. The modulus obtained by the modified Goodman jack method were much higher than those obtained by the NX- borehole jack method. To explain the discrepancy, the influence of fractures and test variables such as depth, orientation, hole number and applied pressure on the calculated modulus of the rock mass were analyzed by factorial analysis and it was found that the orientations and depths of measurement has statistically significant effects. The in-situ deformability values obtained by non-linear regression analysis were also found comparable with other measurements and empirically predicted values for the basalt rock mass.

A tectonically disturbed sequence of Mississippian age evaporites expressing a 5 milligal negative gravity anomaly near Sussex in southeastern New Brunswick, Canada, was investigated by a program of drilling, geologic and geophysical work over the past 27 months. Seventeen of twenty-one drill holes have penetrated 10 to 140 feet of potash mineralization in a salt sequence underlying 2 000 to 3 000 feet of arenaceous, conformable red beds, also of Mississippian age. Bromine and borate studies, lithological characteristics and geophysics, have facilitated improved understanding of the salt structure. The salt sequence has been affected by f1owage which has resulted in both major and minor folding. In the more disturbed areas, the potash interval was extensively subterraneally eroded at the upper anhydrite-salt contact.

Mining managers trying to rapidly reduce production costs tend to implement a traditional set of topdown managerial practices: reductions in production volume, employee layoffs, renegotiation of supplier contracts, cancellation of employee training, restrictions on travel, reductions in office supplies, and so forth. While these practices do reduce costs, the benefits are often limited in both magnitude and duration, and the workforce is usually left demoralized. Successful cost-cutters take a different approach. They make the continuous reduction of costs a priority for all members of the organization, whether managers or workers. The culture of these firms emphasizes the commitment, voluntarily given, of individuals and work groups to this goal. Cost-cutting practices often reject all of the traditional methods mentioned above, but are far more numerous, innovative and successful. This culture of cost reduction is the result of a set of leadership competencies that establish direction for the organization, align the organization's various constituencies with this direction, and motivate and inspire the organization. Cost reduction then becomes a routine task rather than a heroic achievement.

Ammonia and nitrate in metallurgical operations arise from several sources: (1) the use of ammonium nitrate based explosives, e.g. ANFO; (2) the use of cyanide for gold extraction which is degraded to ammonia by most cyanide destruction techniques; and (3) the use of nitrogenous reagents in the mill for neutralisation, flotation and extraction. The concentrations of ammonia and nitrate in effluents vary from 10-50 ppm and 25-300 ppm respectjvely. A number of environmental problems are associated with both ammonia and nitrate. Both of these forms of nitrogen can contribute to the eutrophication of receiving waters. Ammonia and organic nitrogen can also cause high dissolved oxygen demands in receiving waters. Ammonia is also toxic to fish, particularly at elevated pH values. Several methods are in use for the removal of ammonia and nitrate from municipal wastewater, industrial effluents and agricultural runoff. To date, no treatment systems have been developed specifically for the removal of nitrogen from mine and mill effluents. This paper will report on some removal techniques that have been tested using actual and synthetic mine effluents.

The Endako, British Columbia, deposit was initially discovered in 1927 by two local men, Charles H. Foote and Alf Lagdon, who were at that time on a hunting expedition. Four mineral claims were located to cover an area of quartz-molybdenite float that was centered on two small ridges. They subsequently uncovered a 0.5-m (1.6-ft) wide vein on which an inclined shaft was sunk to a depth of 8.3 m (27.2 ft) in 1934. Additionally, a short adit was driven to intersect another vein. Numerous trenches and small pits were also dug. Small test shipments of vein material from this early work were sent to G.S. Eldridge and Co. in Vancouver for metallurgical testing. A concentrate assaying 89.2% MoS, was produced with a recovery reported as 93.3%. The concentrate was essentially free of copper, arsenic, and phosphate. The property was examined by many geologists and engineers during 1934 to 1952, but the only work done was undertaken by the owners in order to maintain their claims in good standing. In 1952, Kennco Explorations (Canada) Ltd. carried out a limited program of bulldozer trenching, sampling, and geological mapping before relin- quishing their option. In 1956, American Standard Mines Ltd. acquired an option on the property, but no assessment work was apparently recorded and the property was allowed to lapse. The key claims were restaked in 1959 by C. Riley and H.T. James of Vancouver. The property was optioned from the new owners by Andrew Robertson in July 1961, and a small amount of trenching was conducted. Robertson, on behalf of his own company, R & P Metals Corp., reoptioned the property in January 1962. The initial results of this work were favorable and justified further exploration. The additional finances required to continue the program resulted in the formation of Endako Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) on June 21, 1962. Field work by R & P Metals and the first Endako Mines exploration was directed by Bob Couts.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) can occur as a natural phenome­non through oxidation of sulfide minerals. Oxidation by air and water can be exacerbated by mining. Because AMD can exhib­it low pH, it is capable of extracting heavy metals from mineral deposits. The result is highly acidic drainage with elevated heavy metal concentrations - the combination of which can cause extensive environmental damage. Because of the importance of these factors, this paper is focused on sulfate based AMD. Due to widespread mining, the occurrence of AMD is ubiqui­tous. As a result, several approaches to treatment have been developed. Chemical treatment using alkali is most commonly employed to treat AMD. There are alternative methods of treat­ment, as well as alternative ways of handling treatment sludges or concentrates. Dewatering of sludge or concentrates is beyond the scope of this paper. Within the family of chemical treatment processes, there are three principal recognized methods, namely, "Conventional," "High Density Sludge" (HDS) and "Heavy Metals Removal Process" (HMRP). All three are now employed or specified for treating AMO at mining sites which are being reclaimed under Superfund. Only limited data are available for more specialized chemical treatment processes such as "ferrate", borohydride membrane and electrochemical methods. Therefore, these data are not included here. Performance data for these three processes are presented in this paper and comparison among them is made. Comparisons include consideration of water quality, sludge characteristics, and operational ease. Capital and operational cost comparisons of these processes were addressed in a previous paper by the authors (see bibliography). The results presented here are impo1tant not only to metals mining, but are also applicable to other industries experiencing metals-laden acidic wastes including: coal mining and prepara­tion, metal plating, and electronics circuit board manufacturing. The acceptance of any process should be based on bench scale demonstration before implementation is contemplated. The three processes included herein are discussed in relation to the particular sites at which they are in use, or their use is planned. The sites selected were representative of the various types of processes and the wastewater parameters.

Underground longwall coal mines depend on conveyor haulage to transport large volumes of coal from the longwall face conveyor to the mine portal. In the last few years, the need for longer and larger longwall panel conveyors has become very significant. In order to keep conveyor equipment to a minimum and still transport higher tonnages over longer lengths, intermediate drive technology has been developed. The use of DC motors and controls in conjunction with load sharing techniques have a1 so proven effective. A case study of a new longwall panel conveyor at Utah Fuel's Skyline Mine incorporating these design techniques will be presented.

"Himalayan geology poses the most challenging ground conditions almost anywhere in the world, one of the reasons thereof is their evolution as the youngest mountain chains. They are demonstratively rising faster than any mountain elsewhere. The composition is also younger, and consequently less well consolidated than the other older fold belts. This is consistent with the fact that they constitute one of the most active of the plate margin zones rising at a rate that is almost double the Andes, which is in turn three times that of the Alps. Thus, stress conditions (Magnitude and variations) can potentially be more extreme and adverse on a Himalayan tunneling project. Tunnel excavation under the Himalayan Mountains will pose significantly more challenges than an equal length and equal cover drive almost anywhere in the world. These in-depth-tunneling difficulties through high mountainous terrains have posed major challenges for application of traditional drill and blast (D&B) and NATM methods. Handling such adverse geology at any depth is always problematic and generally leads, if not adequately foreseen, to the significant tunneling delays. The author wants to highlight the challenges faced and on the spot solutions adopted while executing most prestigious 273Km long Udhampur –Srinagar- Baramula Rail Link Project (USBRL) in the Himalayas in the state of Jammu & Kashmir, India. The main focus of the paper is on main stretch of USBRL Project i.e. T-80 (India’s 2nd longest railway tunnel & 3rd longest in Asia) where the team of the author has recently completed a 11.2 Km long tunnel and where the train track has gone operational from Qazigund to Banihal. The construction of this stretch posed several challenges akin to highly adverse geological conditions. Executing on -the -spot solutions, the project has been completed successfully. 1.0 INTRODUCTION Construction of Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Broad gauge railway line is one of the Mega projects undertaken by Indian Railways to establish a dependable transportation in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. In engineering terminology, it is a challenging project negotiating breakthroughs against the complex Himalayan geology. The Project which has been operational over last 12 years , stretch by stretch, is in advance stage of construction . The purpose of the prestigious project is to connect the Kashmir valley to the mainland of the state of the country. On the date owing to the hurdles of the tuff terrain, the transport of this part is totally dependent on the surface transport, i.e., through a road which connects NH-1A from Delhi to Srinagar. The altitude of the region varies from 500.00 to 1700.00, ranging through Udhampur to Katra - Reasi –Sangaldan- Banihal-Quazikund-Ananthnag-Srinagar-and Baramulla. The main features of this project are its Pirpanjal Tunnel and T-48 & 49 tunnels which cover the maximum length of tunneling through thick hostile geological conditions, the total length being 138km. Details of Pirpanjal tunnels are shown in Figure-1."

To assess the potential for radioactive pollution unique to the environmental conditions of the Bacau phosphogypsum waste dump, surface samples were taken, drillings were performed on the entire waste dump's height, and the Ra226 distribution on the height and surface considered to contain a medium content of the radium of 0.57 Bq/gr was studied. Thus, the waste dump's radioactive potential was estimated at 30-40 Ci in equivalent Ra226. Also analyzed was the granulometric composition of the phosphogypsum and the distribution of Ra226 on granulometric orders, which indicated that the radium was concentrated in the very fine fractions. Parameters were set up for the classification by hydrocycloning to obtain a fine class (less than 41 microns) having a radium content of more than 0.9 Bq/gr and a coarse class having less than 0.37 Bq/gr. A chemical process was devised for removal of the radium from the phosphogypsum with the possibility for recovering the contained sulfur.

Arseno Processing Ltd. has developed process technology for the extraction of gold from refractory ores and concentrates. These ores, which do not respond to conventional extraction processes, are rapidly becoming the primary targets for mining companies wishing to become significant gold producers. It has recently been estimated that by the mid 1990's, the annual gold production from the Pacific Basin Epithermal Arc in southeast Asia could be as high as 550 tonnes. Within this area the Porgera deposit under development by Placer, Renison and MIM, and the Lihir Island deposit under development by Kennecott have been shown to be refractory and require pretreatment before the gold can be extracted. The additional deposits which are now starting to be developed in this area are also expected to require such pretreatment. The Arseno process promises to be an economical pretreatment for these ores and to result in the maximum achievable gold recovery. Numerous refractory deposits are also known in Australia, North America, China and other parts of the world. Samples from many deposits throughout the world have been tested using the Arseno process conditions and the consistently successful results have demonstrated its widespread application. The samples which have been tested include ores in which the gold is locked in pyrite, marcasite or arsenopyrite. The process is insensitive to the sulphur content of the feed. Feed materials containing from 1 % to 50% sulphur have been tested successfully with the process. In the Arseno refractory gold process, sulphide minerals are dissolved so that the contained gold becomes accessible for subs7qu7nt gold recovery. This gold recovery is achieved by cyamdat1on of the process residue. For many of the materials which have been tested, gold extractions in excess of 95% have been achieved.

Computer applications in mine 'production' planning and control are concerned with the here and now. In production planning and control we are dealing with tactics as opposed to strategy. Our objective is to make the best of the situation in the short term, i.e., in a relatively fixed environment with relatively fixed plant, equipment, and labor. Environmental factors include not only the geology of the deposit but also market factors (such as price) and governmental constraints and regulations. Mine production planning systems are applied at the interface between concept and execution. Mine production control systems are applied at the interface between execution and revised operating practices or a revised concept. Fig. 1 shows the information flow that takes place regardless of whether the planning and control systems are manual or automatic. The feedback that results depends on the feedback mechanism that has been established, and this feedback can be enhanced by careful systems analysis and design. Chronologically, production planning and control activities support the last in the series of line functions that are ordinarily performed by mining companies. The first of these is exploration, the second is evaluation and development, and the third and final function is production.

In response to recent mining disasters and new mine rescue team legislation, NIOSH researchers conducted meetings across the United States with mine emergency response experts to investigate current needs and issues. Some of the issues include emergency response preparedness, mine rescue contests, real-life training capabilities and training facilities. Many new teams are being formed that must be trained for mine rescue team competitions as well as be ready to respond to a variety of mine emergencies, including a fire or explosion, a massive roof collapse, mine inundations or vertical shaft rescue situations. Therefore, it is important that these teams are adequately prepared and trained. This paper presents a summary of domestic and international coal mine rescue training facilities and identifies those that provide unique, real-life and/or state-of-the-art training. Research findings from this report will be used in further NIOSH investigations to improve coal mine rescue training.

The Baltimore Red Line Project is a proposed 22.7-km (14.1-mile) long east-west light rail transit (LRT) line envisioned to connect the areas of Woodlawn, Edmondson Village, West Baltimore, downtown Baltimore, Inner Harbor East, Fells Point, Canton and the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center Campus. The Red Line LRT System has two tunnel segments - the Cooks Lane Tunnel (CLT) and the Downtown Tunnel (DTT). The CLT segment is roughly 1,920-m (6,300-ft) long. It commences at the west portal located at the highway ramp for I 70 (to be removed) and terminates at the east portal that is at the intersection of Edmondson Avenue (U.S. Route 40) and Glen Allen Drive. This segment of the project consists of the following construction components: approximately 1,458 m (4,786 ft) of tunnels, 143 m (469 ft) of cut-and-cover tunnel, and 318 m (1,045 ft) of retained cut (U) section. The approximate horizontal alignment for the Red Line LRT Project is shown in Fig. 1.

It has been accepted almost as dogma that sampling contributes most of the error to fluctuations in gold fire assays. Differences in assay results on pulp material from the same sample interval are frequently regarded as evidence of the presence of the so called "nugget effect" or relatively coarse gold particles. It is true that if coarse gold particles are present they contribute to substantial sampling fluctuations, but while the process of sampling is probably the major source, the analytical process cannot -be completely ignored as a possible contributor to erratic assay results. In order to maintain a stable assay process, the analytic part of the system must be kept in control as well as the sampling and preparation part. One way of monitoring the performance of the analytic system is to systematically assay standard material whose sampling characteristics are carefully controlled. Gold assay standards are not prepared nor can they be prepared to account for both sampling and analytical errors. It is not possible to send coarse material to a lab for preparation (which includes both the processes of comminution and splitting) followed by fire assay, to make inferences only about the fire assay process. Because most gold ores are very heterogeneous, sampling errors would in most cases completely mask the contribution of the analytical errors. Assay standard material is prepared only to assess the accuracy and variability in the fire assay process.

Introduction Powered supports in longwall mines essentially operate under two conditions: 1. Static (non-working) 2. Dynamic (working) There is a variety of static conditions which may exist in a mine. These may include a temporary stoppage of work for a few minutes or stoppage of work for days because of strikes or lack of demand for coal. Studies on pressure behavior were made during brief stoppages of work (few hours) as well as a long stoppage of work (two weeks). In dynamic conditions, the pressure variation on supports is expected to follow a certain pattern. However, in many cases that does not happen. Pressure-time characteristics of each leg of the supports were studied. This paper discusses the research findings of the studies made on powered support pressure behavior under both static and dynamic conditions. Studies on Pressure Variation in Static Conditions It has been noted (Brenner et a1.,1975) that the pressure distribution on mechanized longwall faces is random in nature and changes with time and position along the face. Figure 1 and Figure 2 show the distribution of support pressures for the front left leg of supports in two different mines. In both the cases it can be seen that the variation of the support pressures along the face is indeed absolutely random. However, the nature of randomness in both the cases is very different. The data in Figure 1 (Mine 1) is much more random than the data in Figure 2 (Mine 2). This can also be seen from the standard deviation of the data (81 26 Pa versus 4000 pa) . By comparing the results of ten other sets of data the same conclusions can be arrived at. Since it was found that in Mine 1, the pressure on support legs was extremely random, batches of ten supports each were taken and the mean pressure plotted. This mean pressure line is shown in Figure 1. It was expected that this would smooth out the variation due to individual props and reveal a better picture of the support pressure distribution. For the case cited, the standard deviation is lowered to 5043 Pa from 8126 Pa which indicates that, on an average, the supports tend to take loads more uniformly, however for individual support legs the load on the supports is very random. The significance of this is that, if the supports are selected on the basis of theoretical load calculations alone (based on the roof block concept or some other concept), only the mean value of the support load required will be known. In the case of a pressure distribution with a high standard deviation, some supports selected on the basis of mean value will fail, while others will be supporting low loads. Hence, for proper selection of support capacity, it is not only necessary to know the average load but also the expected nature of the distribution. The only reason why the supports are supporting the roof in Mine 1 well is the fact that the yield load is above the highest level of load attained. If Mine 2, which has a much higher average load, had the same sort of standard deviation, the loads on the individual legs could easily exceed the support load. For example, if the pressure distribution followed a normal curve and the mean pressure was 36,700 Pa with a standard deviation of 9000 Pa, it is possible that 67% of the supports will be within the pressure range of 36,700 plus or minus 9,000 Pa, or 22,700 and 45,700 Pa. Many of the supports could then exceed the yield load of 40,000 Pa. It is clear then that the mean load is an inadequate criterion for estimating support resistance. The nature of the problem is statistical and such an analysis should therefore be made as far as pressure data are concerned. Statistical Analysis of Pressure Data. Electrostatic and/or high tension separation has been used for the separation of rare metal bearing minerals, foods, industrial wastes and so on. Since the separation is achieved by the difference mainly in surface conductivity of particles, the efficiency in humid circumstances is very low, and then, the applicability is considerably limited. We applied the following two-stage pretreatment technique to the separation process, which involves (1) adjustment of surface wettability by adsorbing surfactant on the particle surface and (2) control of the surface conductivity by spraying with electrolyte aqueous solution. The addition of this pretreatment technique has been found to have a great advantage over conventional methods. Separation efficiency is achieved even in humid circumstances and selectivity can also be obtained between insulator minerals. The selectivity is very similar to that of flotation in wet process. This separation technique will be applied not only to mineral processing but the processing of industrial waste such as electric and electronic waste materials.

Reflected light microscopy was used to study the mineralogy and textures of experimental reactions of a nickel concentrate with a slag. Such an interaction is an important step in the bath smelting of nickel sulphide concentrate. Concentrate particles in the central portions of the pellets are rounded and develop vermicular S02 gas porosity. In the outer portions of the pellets, the original minerals of the concentrate, i.e., pyrrhotite, pentlandite, pyrite, chalcopyrite and violarite, have agglomerated and reacted to form two intergrown phases: pyrrhotite solid solution (FeO.75Ni0.18Cu0.01S) and pentlandite solid solution (Fe0.58Ni0.51Cu 0.03S). Magnetite formed euhedral crystals, skeletal crystals and dendrites at the margins of the matte. Prismatic, ferrohypersthene and octahedral Mg-Al-Fe spinet crystals and dendrites are present in the glassy slag. "Plutonic-related" gold deposits in Interior and SW Alaska (Tintina Gold Belt) vary significantly in size, grade, vein/deposit morphology, depth of emplacement, distance from causative pluton and metal association. Metal associations such as Au-Bi and Au-As- (Sb-Hg) are a good empirical indicator of the depth of emplacement and distance from causative pluton. These associations have been used successfully in exploration. Results from several analytical techniques also suggest a phenomenological cause for these metal associations. Gold and bismuth have paired mineralogy at high temperatures and, thus, are best correlated at deposits that are deep and/or close to causative intrusions.
