Sweden is beginning to reap the rewards of a process that has transformed a country with a history of metal mining into one of Europe's most vibrant exploration regions. Exploration and mining companies from North America, Europe and Australia have joined local firms in the search of gold, base metals and diamonds. This has been due to changes in Sweden's mining laws in the early 1990s. These changes opened the way for unhindered private sector investment in the country's mineral industry. More than 20,000 km2 (4.9 million acres), mainly in northern Sweden, is now held under granted or applied exploration claims. Exploration permits diamonds, applied or granted covers more than half of Sweden's surface. This is a greater proportion of the country than ever before. Major mining companies and junior explorationists are evaluating a geological potential that bears favorable comparison to other major mining centers. Historically, Sweden's gold re- sources occur in greenstone belts in northernmost Sweden and in association with massive sulfide deposits in the Skellefte district. These are receiving particular attention by exploration companies. In addition, new areas in Sweden are also being explored for gold. This increases the probability that Swedish gold production - already the highest in Europe - will increase in the future (Table 1). Sweden's recorded mining history goes back for much of the last large pool of expertise in exploration, mining, equipment manufacturing and minerals industry research. In addition, the Geological Survey of Sweden provides sup- port for exploration in terms of data archives, processing and publications. Other benefits for exploration companies are Sweden's communications infrastructure, its member- ship in the European Union, bringing access to one of the world's major markets and the high level of educational, technical and language skills held by the country's work- force. And deregulation of the economy and the introduction of competitive corporate tax rates have made Sweden a favorable destination for investment in Europe.

This paper discusses the Helical Drag Bit (HDB) and its rock drilling applications with an emphasis on use in mining operations. The HDB is a drilling tool that employs cutting members arranged in a pattern to form a helical groove or thread within a borehole. This pattern of cutters can be used for several purposes including roof bolting in mining, interpretation of the lithology of the strata being drilled and low energy consumption drilling. Laboratory and field experiments have consistently shown increase of roof bolt-anchoring capacities in weak rock of more than 100% using the short encapsulation pull test method when boreholes are conditioned using the HDB. In 2004 a series of tests conducted in mines with weak roofs demonstrated the benefits of HDB technology for roof bolting applications in mining. HDB technology offers opportunities for new and beneficial approaches to interpret the geology of roof strata. During conventional drilling, traditional approaches to determine rock properties require simultaneous measurement of several parameters such as thrust, rotational velocity, torque and penetration rate. The unique geometry of the HDB possesses a characteristic that allows determination of the mechanical properties of the rock being drilled by measuring torque as a single drilling parameter. This capability greatly simplifies the process of determining rock properties and provides reliable results. Additionally, HDB technology has been demonstrated to offer significant advantages for rock drilling. A substantial portion of the rock is removed by the fracturing of the internal thread created in the rock bore by the tool taking advantage of the weakness of the rock in tension. Because the rock chips obtained in this process are relatively large, savings in energy are realized when compared to traditional drilling technologies.

"Trace element analysis of placer gold can be used as a valuable exploration tool in order to determine the original deposit source and locating lode gold deposits. Placer gold collected from multiple districts in New Mexico and Alaska, coupled with a broad database of previously analyzed placer gold samples indicate correlations between chemical signatures (especially gold, silver, and copper) and type of deposits (i.e., Au-rich copper porphyry deposits, Au porphyry deposits, and epithermal deposits). By completing a chemical analysis and determining the particle morphology of placer gold collected from these districts using an electron microprobe, patterns in the chemical signatures from each location can be used to examine chemical variability (1) within the individual placer gold particles, (2) within the same district and (3) among different districts. INTRODUCTION Although there are numerous past studies on the chemical composition of placer gold by Newberry et al. (1997), Melchiorre (2001, 2009), Townley et al. (2003), and McLemore et al. (2014), the gold analyzed tends to be collected from one or few specific districts. Rarely do those studies compare compositional results to additional districts, or elaborate on the correlation between the elemental composition of the placer gold and the original deposit source for the respective districts. This research analyzes the composition of placer gold from multiple districts and within the same district. There are a number of elements, which can, in various quantities, be present in placer gold particles. Native gold can be in complete solid solution with native silver and contain additional elements including Cu, As, Pb, Fe, and S. The chemical signature of the gold is determined by the thermodynamic conditions of precipitation and transport as well as the total metal content of the system. As Townley et al. (2003) explains, “These thermodynamic conditions and metal budget differ from one type of hydrothermal deposit to another, and hence different deposit types will each have a characteristic gold compositional signature.” Identifying this signature can be a highly valuable tool in exploring for gold, as it can not only be used to determine the original source deposit of the placer gold, but provide valuable insight as to the erosion level of the present deposit."

"The decline of the “super cycle” has placed an end to a decade of production-focused strategies, with operating cost growing at rates higher than production. Today, the sector is placed on a tough ride and forced to shift focus to cash preservation and efficient cost management. However, most cost management systems in the minerals industry are not conceived as value driving tools but to meet financial accounting and reporting needs. This research draws from a the development of an innovative cost management methodology that applies Activity-Based Bottom-Up cost budgeting and continuous improvement tools to develop a value-driven cost management system for sustainable improvement of operational efficiency and cost reduction. The methodology was successfully tested in the Andina underground mine III Panel sector of Corporation del Cobre (CODELCO), in Chile. INTRODUCTION Cost management is fundamental to profitability of any industrial project. Even more essential in mining, an industry that deals with commodities, which prices are dictated by the market and are beyond the management capacity of the company. The end of the mining “super cycle” and the advent in 2008 of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), placed an end to a decade of production focused strategies, with operating cost growing at rates higher than production. The sector was placed on a tough ride and forced to shift focus to cash preservation and efficient cost management. Many mining companies have seen themselves into the urgent need of cost management systems capable of achieving sustainable productivity gains and consistent profitability. Cost management is composed of three main processes: estimation, budgeting and control [1]. A number of conventional techniques have been used for cost estimation and budgeting for many years. However, most cost control systems in the minerals industry cannot be referred to as “cost management” since they are conceived to fulfil accounting and reporting needs, rather than to improve operational efficiency [2]. In general, conventional cost budgeting and control systems in mining use a “top-down” methodology, which lacks of necessary details, and fail as a management tool leading to undesirable results [3]."

Storm King Mines began with the concept that the resource potential of thick and steeply pitching seams of the Grand Hogback region of Colorado could be mined profitably. Two large tracts of private land (fee coal) were acquired; approximately 23.8 km2 near Glenwood and 16.2 km2 near Meeker. Figure 1. Although both properties have substantial coal reserves, one has several distinct advantages in developing a competitive mining operation. Table 1 illustrates these advantages. Among the most important considerations from an economical point of view are proximity to railroad, highway, labor force, quality of coal, seam thickness, and source of water. As can be seen, Storm King Mines' property is adjacent to the main line of the D & RGW Railroad, 1-70, and the Colorado River. The cities of New Castle, Glenwood Springs, Silt, Rifle, Carbondale, and Parachute are within short commuting distances and have available skilled labor.

Retreat mining is one of the most hazardous operations conducted underground. One of the keys to miner safety and an efficient recovery of the reserves is to design adequately sized production pillars to prevent pillar squeezes, excessive pillar spalling, severe floor heave, roof falls, and pillar bumps. Currently, few pillar design approaches are available which consider the abutment pressures generated by the gob. The Bureau of Mines is developing a method called Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) to aid in the design of retreating sections. Back analysis of 42 case studies indicates that ARMPS can be helpful in predicting stability during retreat mining operations.

Minerals Engineering Company (MECO) is a relatively small, promotionally oriented mineral exploration company founded in Colorado in 1948 during the height of the uranium boom. The company has been: 1. in uranium exploration and production 2. a drilling company 3. a manufacturer of Geiger counters 4. a major tungsten producer 5. then dormat for several years and 6. now we are back into exploration on a broad scale. We have been in underground lead and zinc production in the 1970's but we are now involved primarily in "wheeling and dealing" in mineral exploration. The company has had diverse interests in the past and we are presently diversifying to some extent into oil and gas ventures.

The justification for a "ligand- selective' approach to fine mineral beneficiation via flocculation is established initially. Special emphasis is placed upon the need to identify non-selective, interfering and complicating adsorption effects. Specific strategies directed towards the design and synthesis of complementary selective flocculants are detailed using a number of different polymers and chelating agents as examples. In this regard, the affinity of polymer-bound ligands for metallic cations, ligand concentration, possible modes of attachment, the application of spaced-out ligands and other considerations in the preparation of selective flocculants are highlighted.

Underground mines, penetrating well below the water table, quickly fill with water when abandoned. Ordinarily, these natural cisterns are not thought of as sources of industrial water. Under special circumstance, if chemically treatable, they might become valuable industrial water reservoirs. An example of a group of about 20 mines in a geological and structural setting insuring water entrapment, rapid recharge and a possible minimum of contamination, are the small, compact Belle Ellen and Piper basins in Alabama's small but second most productive coalfield, the Cahaba. The mines have been abandoned from more than 50 to less than three years. The county now produces about a million tons of coal annually, all from strip mining. Figure 1 shows an idealized cross section of the strata in the Belle Ellen syncline near West Blocton, Bibb County, Alabama. Figure 2, 3 and 4 are maps showing the location of the syncline, other structural features, the outcrop lines of the three principal coalbeds underlying the basin, and the mined-out areas on the three beds (1).

A statistically-designed exper¬mental study showed how gangue minerals, flux additions, fineness of grind, firing temperature and time affect the properties of acid pellets made from a Western Australian hematite ore. Alumina has less effect than silica and lime, but various interactions between the six variables occur, which influence abrasion index, reducibility and cold compression strength. Finer grinding has little influence on reducibility but improves the other two properties. The major variable is firing temperature. It interacts with all other variables in its effects on pellet properties. Calculations based on the data show the implications for straight-grate pellet plants and optimum hood temperature range.

DESIGN BASIS Size of Project The size of the project generally is expressed in tons of ore milled per day, but company policies differ widely in this respect with a few adhering to this set figure but many expecting the design capacity to be liberal. To some companies that follow the latter practice a 25,000-tpd milling plant that cannot reach 30,000 or 35,000 tpd with¬out major additions is a disappointment. The engineers responsible for planning the operation must know what is intended. Other projects are sized according to the tonnage of product rather than of mine ore; examples are iron ore mills that express size in terms of tons per year of pellets or high-grade concentrates, heavy minerals plants in tons per year of rutile or ilmenite, cement plants in barrels per year, potash in tons per year of muriate, phosphate in tons per year of washer rock and flotation concentrate, and others. However, tons per day milling rate is also the common denominator in most of those instances because the major equipment has to be selected on that criterion. Equally important are operating schedules, particularly the number of operating days per week and shifts per day for ore delivery, crushing, grinding, and processing. Hours per shift also are an impor¬tant factor in design, particularly in the case of ore delivery, and the lost time expected for maintenance, cleanup, inspection, preventive maintenance shutdowns, and many others, has to be taken into ac¬count. Frequently, the ore deposit will vary in hardness and grade to such a degree that the capacity of the mill will vary widely from year to year and cannot be expressed as a fixed figure, but rather as an average over a calculable period, such as ten years, or as a specific daily capacity over the first two years, next four years, etc., or some similar projection. A good example of this kind of situation is Asarco's Mission operation 15 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz., described by Weiss and Vincent,1 where the major rock types differed widely in hardness, so that a change in the proportion of these types in the mill feed could have imposed difficult design problems if a constant tonnage rate had been expected. Expected Life The life of a mining operation depends upon the size of the deposit and the rate of mining. The latter is a policy decision based on an economic analysis2 which, in turn, is based on many factors. From the point of view of mill planning, the estimated life of the operation determines many criteria and affects many decisions on strength of structures and degree of protection of men and materials, the quality of the materials-handling and process machinery, the type of delivery systems for ore to the mill and concentrates to the smelter or market, environmental considerations, and many others. Costly installations that may be excellent investments for a 20-year project may be waste¬ful for a 5-year operation. An example is the comparison of different methods of crushing or grinding. Take single- vs. multiple-stage grind¬ing-the former may be found more economical for a 5-year operation, and the other, more costly method more economical for a 15- to 20-year life. Mining and Ore Transportation The mining method and the means of transportation of the ore to the first crushing stage have far-reaching effects upon mill design, particularly the crushing sections, and upon site selection (see Chapter 2, Situation of Mill). Consequently, mill design cannot advance until the mine planning has reached at least tentative decisions concerning these important matters, or reach the final stages until much is known about the ore that may be expected month by month and year by year for a reasonable period. Methods of ore transportation used in over 90 underground and open-pit mines are listed briefly in Section 32 (Table 1), and more detail is found later in this section and in Section 10, Storage and Transport. These methods include surface railroad, trucks, conveyors, surface skips, underground skips, and tramming from hoist or tunnel. In surface mining, transportation of the uncrushed ore by rail or truck to the primary crushing plant-conveniently located for lowest overall cost-is most common. Rail transportation provides low perton-mile costs. Truck transportation, though in some cases less eco¬nomical, is more flexible and more adaptable to mountainous terrain; furthermore, recent improvements have reduced the operating costs to keep trucks competitive on low-grade ores. The design of the primary crushing plant will be essentially the same whether delivery is by truck or rail, but the location of the plant is subject to more rigid restrictions in the latter case because of grade limitations, and these in turn may adversely affect the selec¬tion of the mill site as well. The influence of truck haulage in reducing the stripping ratio in open-pit mines is an added reason for predicting a minor role for rail transportation in the future. The use of conveyors to transport ore from the pit to the milling plant involves (in most cases) crushing the ore to a reasonable size (10 to 20 in. maximum with today's crushers) before conveying. The Twin Buttes system3 which went into operation in late 1969, utilizes primary crushers (two) and conveyors to receive rock waste, ore, and low-grade stockpile material from trucks, then transport them to the appropriate destination. Flexibility is dependent upon the porta¬bility of the primary crushers. In the face of this development, inclined skip hoists are no longer important to the mill designers. Underground mines generally pose fewer problems of design; these will be discussed in Chapter 2. Character of Deposit The degree of homogeneity of the ore in various parts of the mine is an important factor. The characteristics that concern the millman (approximately in order of importance) are: hardness, assay, metallurgical response, size distribution,4 and moisture content. Under metallurgical response may be included degree of oxidation, mineral¬ogy, clay content, and reagent consumption, as well as process re¬sponse in general. Short-term variations-hour-to-hour, day-to-day, or even week-to-week-make operation of the plant more difficult, require greater flexibility of process design and, perhaps, also require more instrumentation and manpower. Theoretical and experimental lockedness profile curves are the same when the model assumptions are met. They appear different because of the way the data is presented. Continuous theoretical lockedness profile curves present all the data, including the wings of the curves giving them the deep U-shaped configuration. Experimental lockedness profile curves, because of the measurement methods, are discretized, obscuring the wings. If the continuous theoretical curves are discretized, they are similar to the experimental curves. When a float sink test is used to measure an interval of locked particles, the integrated averaging of the separation process obscures the wings of the continuous theoretical curve. To disclose the wings with experimental data, narrow density or measurement intervals must be used.

The naturally occurring aged manganese oxide coated on the granular media was found to have a catalytic effect on the removal of low concentration of Mn(II) (-1 ppm) from drinking water. Applying this principle, a manganese removal technique was developed for removal of higher concentration of Mn(II) (-100 ppm) from mine drainage by using various aged filter media and synthesized granular media with manganese oxide coatings. Laboratory-scale continuous granular media column experiments were conducted to assess the feasibility of manganese oxide-coated granular media for Mn(II) removal from synthesized mine drainage. The removals of Mn(II) were evaluated as a function of operation parameters including solution pH, manganese oxide concentration coated on the media, interstitial velocity, and oxidant concentration of influent. Higher solution pH and/or higher manganese oxide concentration promoted the removal of Mn(II) on the oxide-coated granular media under low interstitial velocity. Addition of sodium hypochlorite as an oxidant in the influent resulted in continuously regenerated oxidized surface to serve as the catalyst for Mn(II) oxidation reaction on the surface of oxide-coated media.

On December 2, 1942, a scientific team lead by Nobel Prize winner Enrico Fermi first initiated and controlled a self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction. This historic event occurring beneath the stands of the University of Chicago football stadium instantly created an entirely new and tremendously broad area of technology. Indeed, the event probably changed the course of world history and considering the curret energy shortage, it probably came none too soon. Following many technological breakthroughs in the ensuing years, this event led to the first full scale nuclear fueled electric generating plant. In December, 1957, the Shippingport Nuclear Power Plant became operational and the United States had entered the era of the nuclear fueled electric generating station. Today, only fifteen years later, there are some thirty-five operating nuclear power plants in the United States with another 56 under construction and 116 on order. Still, we are only scratching the surface of this tremendous energy source. In 1970, less than one-percent of the total electric generating capacity in the United States was nuclear fueled. By 1985, it is projected that 45% of our generating capacity will result from nuclear power plants. These projections are based upoa statistics of six months to a year ago and considering the current energy shortage and recent attempts by the United States Atomic Energy Commission (USAEC) to speed the licensing process and encourage standardized plants, the contribution of nuclear power to our total generating capacity may be even greater. In summary, it is obvious that nuclear power is now, and will continue, playing an important role in our future. Those factions of government, industry and the professional community charged with fully developing this tremendous energy source must deal with it rationally, logically and expediently. The various environmental considerations in nuclear plant siting play an important role in the overall plan.

An airborne dust cloud is an ensemble of particles of varied size, density, shape and states of aggregation. An understanding and quantifying of the dispersion and deposition of the dust generated in mines is essential to the development of measures for reducing worker exposure to dust. In coal mining, the major portion of the dust is generated during the cutting of coal using either a shearer or a continuous miner. The major phenomenon affecting ambient concentration is the deposition of dust. Particle deposition may take place due to the effect of gravitational, inertial, electrostatic, and thermal forces, and mechanisms such as Brownian and eddy diffusion, and inertial impaction. The three major mechanisms of deposition in turbulent flow in mines are diffusion (Brownian and eddy), sedimentation and inertial impaction. The mechanisms determining particle deposition are size dependent.

Earlier work at Mintek on the development of gold-selective resins culminated in a plant-manufactured batch of the first generation of Minix resin. A subsequent pilot-plant campaign at a South African gold mine identified some problems with that resin. These included lower capacity and selectivity for gold compared with the laboratory prototype, and a slow but progressive loss in capacity as the resin was eluted and reloaded cyclically. These problems were overcome by chemical modification of the resin structure. Examples of these improvements are presented. The commercialization of a new resin for a new metallurgical application presents problems, which are exacerbated by the initial lack of demand for the resin because the process is unfamiliar to the mining industry. Progress in the commercial development of Minix is discussed in this context.

The main problem in geochemical exploration for gold ore bodies in the 40 km2 hydrothermally altered area at Goldfield is to decide which of the many silicified ledges exposed are most likely to yield deposits with additional subsurface exploration. We conclude that the most efficient way to search for exploration targets is to collect rock samples from the ledges and analyze for the following elements in decreasing order of priority: gold, lead and silver, bismuth, and mercury. These elements form relict hypogene aureoles restricted to the ledges and are not appreciably redistributed during supergene leaching.

An earlier paper1 introduced a rapid solution for mine ventilation network problems, employing the digital computer. In this paper, refinements and additions to the computer program which expand its scope of application and a solution to a ventilation network having a coal-mine configuration are presented. Specifically, the revised program--written in FORTRAN for the IBM 7074 computer in Penn State's Computation Center--is applicable to any mine ventilation network employing natural splitting and having its fan located externally. It accomplishes the following; 1. Distributes an assumed total quantity of air flow among all air- ways of the network, performing iterations until an acceptable level of error is attained and the flow in each airway is known. 2, Computes the pressure drop (head loss) in all airways and the overall network and mine head losses. 3. Determines the operating point for the mine and a given fan, adjusting all air flows and head losses to the actual values.

INTRODUCTION With the introduction of large diameter hole drilling to underground mining, a need for the development and utilization of new blasting technology has arisen. This new technology has resulted in more efficient blasting and in easier and cheaper mining. The application of spherical charges to the crater blasting method is an im¬portant part of this technology. Spherical charges, or their geometric equivalent, make for highly efficient use of explosives in the cratering application. Their geo¬metrical configuration, normally a length :diameter ra¬tio of <6:1, limits their charge weight size. For exam¬ple in a 165-mm (61/2-in.) hole a spherical charge weighs approximately 34 kg (75 lb). These dimensional and weight restrictions require careful engineering design and control in the production application. Strathcona mine, a large tonnage mechanized cut¬and-fill and blasthole stoping operation located on the north rim of the Sudbury Basin, has successfully em¬ployed the crater blasting method in production blasting for the past two and a half years (as of 1979). As a result, this method, using spherical charges, has made possible the development and implementation of a verti¬cal retreat blasthole mining method which is being used for rib pillar recovery. The crater method used at Strathcona essentially in¬volves blasting off horizontal slices of ore into an under¬cut while retreating vertically to the pillar overcut elevation. Loading and priming of the holes is achieved from the overcut and the blasted muck is recovered by load¬haul-dump (LHD) units through a drawpoint system. Valuable experience on the behavior and performance of explosives in large diameter holes has been gained in both the operating and engineering fields from the appli¬cation of this blasting method. It has been used in drop raising and is currently being evaluated for use in pri¬mary stoping operations. Also, serious consideration is being given to its use for the recovery of post pillars in mined-out and backfilled cut and fill stopes. The method has significant advantages over conven¬tional methods of pillar recovery from economic, ground control, and safety points of view. These include cost benefits due to a minimum stoping development, less ground support, reduced labor requirements, and faster mining rate. Research on the blasting mechanism indi¬cated the method should result in less damage to fill walls than would be normally expected with conven¬tional longhole or large diameter hole cylindrical blast¬ing (benching). This is primarily due to the limited charge weight per delay because of the size dimensions of a spherical as compared with a cylindrical charge and also because the large diameter holes experience less de¬viation than standard-sized longholes. Experience has shown that wall damage has been minimized with the use of this method. The safety aspects of the working environment are also improved as there is no require¬ment for manpower to go under exposed backs after blasting, which is a significant improvement over the cut-and-fill method. CRATERING THEORY General The term cratering, in blasting, is applied to the for¬mation of a surface cavity in a material as the result of detonating an explosive charge in that material. This blasting concept was initially used as a tool in the eval¬uation of explosives performance; however, it has been utilized more recently on surface and to a lesser extent in underground blasting operations. Explosive charges used in crater method are nor¬mally spherical or the geometric equivalent, as research into the application of this breakage mechanism to rock indicates that spherical charges or their equivalent pro¬duce optimum results. In blasting practice, spherical charges have been defined as having a length to diameter (L: D) ratio of 4:1 or less, and up to, but not exceeding a L: D = 6:1. Thus, for holes 165 mm (61/2 in.) diam, a charge 165 mm (61/2 in.) diam, and 990 mm (39 in.) in length would constitute a spherical charge. Crater Testing Crater testing for underground application is nor¬mally accomplished by drilling smaller than production sized horizontal holes into drift walls, placing relatively small charges of explosives in the holes at various depths of burial, firing the charges, and measuring the results. The results are scaled to develop charge weight size and depth of burial parameters for production hole sizes. In theory, this procedure is valid and is appli¬cable for surface blasting; however, in underground applications where the craters are inverted, there is some question as to whether extrapolation of the test results is appropriate. As well as the fact that craters are in¬verted with resultant gravity stresses, testing is often done in a waste rock drift where the properties differ from those in ore rock. There is also some question as to whether a 51 or 76-mm (2 or 3-in.) diam charge behaves similarly to a 165-mm (61/2-in.) charge in a confined borehole. Crater testing at Strathcona involved drilling 76-mm (3-in.) diam holes at various depths ranging from 1 to 3 m (3 to 10 ft). The test holes were drilled in the wall of a predominately waste drift as well as in a stope wall. Charges were placed at various depths of burial, were confined, fired, and the results measured. Although the results were somewhat erratic, possibly because of the aforementioned reasons, they did provide guidelines for basic design for production application.
