Tests were conducted on C86200 high-strength yellow brass in order to ascertain the effect of a low level of nickel on the mechanical properties on this alloy. A series of two alloys was studied, one of which had a nickel content of 0.85% and the other with <0.05% nickel. Copper and aluminum content ranged from 62.5% to 64% and 3.2% to 4.6%, respectively. When compared by zinc equivalents, a nickel addition of 0.75% in high-strength yellow brass does not act like copper but raises the tensile strength, 0.5% yield strength and BHN while lowering the elongation.

Alkyd resins are used in surface treatment. They are product of the glycerolysis followed by polymerization. In the present work it was studied methods of alkyd resin production from crude glycerol compared with resin produced with pure glycerol. This glycerol corresponds to 10% of the final products in the biodiesel production. The crude glycerol was partially purified with neutralization, flotation and adsorption. The experiments were accomplished with temperature control, inert atmosphere and with several quantities of the substrate. For the products characterization physic-chemistry methods, infrared spectroscopy and hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance were used. According to the observed results, the resins obtained with crude glycerol have presented similar properties of the classic alkyd resin produced with pure glycerol. The exploitation of the crude glycerol reduces the stages and costs of the process.

LG Metals Corporation started its second smelter operation at Onsan along with the existing flash smelter on January 31, 1998. Onsan smelter has been producing about 140,000 tons of copper annually from concentrates with the flash smelting line since 1979. In accordance with an increase in domestic copper demand, LG Metals Corporation decided to expand smelting and refining capacity by introducing a second smelter line using the Mitsubishi continuous process and a new tankhouse in 1995. After two years&apos; expansion works consisting of engineering, procurement, construction and a successful commissioning test, the total smelting capacity of Onsan smelter increased to 340,000 ton of copper annually from concentrates. Both pressure leaching of zinc concentrate, in an autoclave, and atmospheric leaching, in stirred tanks, have been employed in the expansion of zinc production at plants employing roast-leach-electrowin technology. These direct leaching methods result in the conversion of the sulphur in the feed to the elemental form, rather than to sulphur dioxide, decoupling zinc production from acid production. Atmospheric and pressure leaching methods are also readily implemented over a wide range of production rates. In choosing the best technology for expansion, capital and operating costs, zinc recovery, byproduct quality and the compatibility of recycle streams with the existing refinery must be compared. Leach testwork with several zinc concentrates using both methods has been performed by Dynatec. Recent results are presented, along with a discussion of their implications for process selection.

Ammonia - ammonium sulfate solutions were sparged in a glass reactor with a SO2/O2 gas mixture (2% SO2 and 98% O2) to leach copper from pure chalcopyrite and chalcopyrite concentrate. The SO2/O2 mixture produces higher and faster extractions than O2 by itself. The effect of temperature, particle size and free ammonia concentration was investigated. The fastest and highest recoveries were obtained at 80 oC from a chalcopyrite concentrate with a d80equal to 13 m, with about 83 gpl free ammonia, an average pH equal to 8.75 and a stirring speed of 500 rpm. The extraction process was controlled by diffusion through a product layer, according to the shrinking core model, with an activation energy of 41 kJ/mole.

"The material flow of urban eco-industrial system includes linear flow, recycling flow, branching flow, converging flow, etc., which consequently lead to the system complexity. Comparing the urban eco-industrial system to ecosystem, it can be concluded that this complexity is caused by the system adaptability. In the system, the interaction and adaptability between the agents themselves and between the agents and the environment stimulates the changes of material-flow mode, which lead to the evolvement from traditional industry to the eco-industry. Focusing on the evaluation of this evolvement process, two material-flow models are established in this paper, one of which is for the system itself and the other for the agents in system. The latter model is applied to analyze the interrelationships among mass, energy and pollutant flow in the iron and steel industry, and to make the direction clear to improve the resource and energy efficiency and decrease the environmental load.1 IntroductionIndustrial system is a subsystem of urban system, and they are interconnected and interrelated through material flow. The industrial development causes the urbanization. But the traditional industrial mode, characterized by high consumption, high pollution and low efficiency, also causes the “urban problems”, and leads to the reduction of resources carrying capacity and the increase of environmental load. Nowadays a lot of researches focus on how to realize the sustainable development of industries and cities. Thus comes the urban eco-industrial system guided by industrial ecology.Regarded as a Complex Adaptive System (CAS), the urban eco-industrial system evolves for quite a long time. According to Holland’s description on CAS, CAS consists of adaptive agents, which interact with the environment and other agents, learn and accumulate experiences, and accordingly change their own structures and motion modes. In this way, the evolution of the whole macro system is improved [1]. The evolution from traditional industrial system to urban eco-industrial system is mainly reflected in the variety of internal material flows which include not only linear flows but also recycling flows. Therefore, to construct models which clearly analyze industrial metabolism, is of great importance to evaluate industrial system evolution.The article is organized as follows: Section 2 describes the urban eco-industrial system. Section 3 presents the system-oriented metabolic analysis model and the agent-oriented one, analyze the interrelations of energy flow, material flow and pollutant flow in Chinese iron and steel industry through the latter model, and indicates the directions of improving the resource efficiency and energy efficiency, and decreasing the environmental load. Section 4 concludes."

From its beginning in the 1970s, the Teniente Converter has consistently achieved continuous improvement, and has contributed to the competitiveness and sustainability of Codelco&apos;s copper operations. The later introduction of the Slag Cleaning Furnace technology has helped to create a full technology package, referred to as the Teniente Technology. This paper outlines the features of a new research and innovation program designed to bring the Teniente Technology as a modem, competitive technology into the 21st century. The overall objectives and features of the program are described and discussed. It is fully anticipated that these activities will help position the Teniente Technology as a world-class modem technology, well-integrated and operating in a fully continuous mode in conjunction with the other units at the plant, a competitive technology which operates in harmony with respect to environmental regulations.

In this review paper the effect of composition and temperature on electrical conductivity and viscosity of the slags encountered in electric smelting of PGM-containing sulfide concentrates is described along with their liquidus temperatures. Optimization of slag composition is attempted on the basis of opposite trends of viscosity and electrical conductivity. Metal losses to slag, matte-slag separation and matte settling are also discussed in conjunction with interfacial and surface tension concepts. The electrode immersed in the slag phase is the main factor in the design and operation of the furnace. The most important electrode parameters are the size and the positioning in the slag phase which are determined by the slag resistivity, furnace resistance, cell constant and power input. The flow of heat generated by the electrode current determines the energy distribution and furnace dimensions creating viscosity profiles within the slag phase which in turn affects the flow conditions. Thus the flow of slag is discussed together with furnace geometry, stirring action, buoyancy and electromagnetic effects and the action of the electric furnace as a settler is emphasized. A discussion on the design d production capacity of the furnace is provided which are based on considerations derived mainly from slag properties.

A common international safety and health management system was developed. Analysis of selected major safety and health management systems from around the world was conducted. Functional elements of selected systems were grouped to identify common elements and key differences. Common elements were subjected to qualitative judgments of equivalency and then reconciled. With few exceptions, differing elements were revised to achieve cultural neutrality. The resulting 98 system elements were organized according to the NOSA numbering and title scheme. System summaries were produced in Spanish and English. A pre-implementation self-assessment evaluated conformance in three distinct cultures. The consensus 98 element system was internally named the BHP Copper Five Star Safety System Performance Management Guidelines. Development of a common system within an organization with international operations can enhance the ability of the staff function to share resources, programs and subsystem improvements and thereby increasingly protect workers. Common systems can increase the level of management support by demonstrating increased compatibility of the safety and health management function with traditional business objectives. Safety professionals, industrial and occupational hygienists, business managers and the safety and health of workers will benefit from further development and articulation of common systems for safety and health management.

A thermodynamic model for predicting the distribution coefficients has been developed by taking into account the extraction mech-.ism and the chloride complexation when Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy and Ho for single component systems are extracted from acidic chloride solutions by di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid and 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester in kerosene, respectively. The model equation includes two constants, of which one corresponds to the apparent extraction equilibrium constant and the other is due to the variation of the activity coefficients of organic species. These values are determined from a few experimental data by the curve fitting method Then, the distribution coefficients under untried conditions have been predicted from only the initial data by iterative calculations. Bromley&apos;s formulation is used to estimate the activity coefficients of aqueous species and the interaction parameters for some rare earth chlorides are reported in terms of molality and molarity using data from Spedding et al. The validity of this method has been confirmed by excellent agreement between the experimental and the predicted distribution coefficients.

A fundamental study of the sonochemical leaching of chalcopyrite in ferric ion media has been performed to understand and quantify the effects of sonication and other parameters on leaching reactions. The study covers sulfate and chloride media. The main leaching reaction: CuFeS2(s) + 4Fe3+(aq) Cu2+(aq) + 5Fe2+(aq) + 2S(s) (1) was found to be dependent on temperature and initial particle size, but less dependent on ferric ion concentration. Leaching kinetics were not affected by ferrous ion concentration or the amount of chalcopyrite added. Leaching was performed under a variety of sonication and leaching conditions. Reaction stoichiometry was confirmed through detailed wet chemistry analysis and mass balance calculations. The use of ultrasound activation showed a clear improvement in leaching kinetics and amount of copper extracted, sonication having a catalytic-like effect on the leaching reaction. Compared to experiments without sonication, reaction rates were 2-3 times faster at the same temperature, and could be faster by a factor of 20 for the same initial particle size. Regardless of initial particle size, the amount of copper extracted was comparable under sonication, and could be twice that under chemical leaching, implying the avoidance of fine particle grinding. Sonochemical leaching was found to be only temperature dependent, where the best copper extraction was at 75C. Leaching was further enhanced by the use of a grinding aid. The leaching behavior of chalcopyrite particles remained similar with and without ultrasound activation, implying that the known passivation mechanism in the oxidative leaching was not eradicated. Sonication resulted in coarse particle breakage (ultrasonic milling). Sonication did not contribute to particle passivation, as affirmed from different leaching procedures and sonication in aqueous and organic media. Parabolic leaching kinetics were confirmed for leaching experiments.

One of the preferred methods for the recovery of gold from refractory gold ores and concentrates involves pressure oxidation in acidic solutions. The main refractory gold-containing minerals are pyrite and arsenopyrite and there is evidence that the presence of even small amounts of chloride can inhibit the oxidation of these minerals and also substantially reduce the recovery of gold. In this paper, the results of a study of the anodic (oxidation) and cathodic (reduction) behaviour of pyrite electrodes in acidic sulfate solutions containing ferric ions at different chloride concentrations and temperatures up to 200oC and pressures of 2000KPa are presented. The electrochemical studies have been complemented by pressure oxidation experiments on a refractory gold concentrate. Results have shown that, as the chloride concentration increases, the anodic reactivity of pyrite is largely unaffected but the rate of the cathodic reduction of iron(III) decreases. The rate of oxidation of a sulfide concentrate and the recovery of gold by cyanidation of the residues decreases at high concentrations of chloride.

"One of the thrust areas for the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) program is the development of actinide bearing fuels for transmutation in a fast reactor. Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel has an extensive fast reactor irradiation history and thus is being considered for use as a baseline composition from which minor actinides can be incorporated for use as a transmutation fuel. The current study involves characterization of precursor powders and pellets destined for the Advanced Test Reactor in Idaho. These pellets will have three compositions: one standard MOX composition, (U0.80Pu0.20)O1.98, and two compositions of minor actinide mixed oxide (MAMOX) with oxygen to metal ratios (O/M) of (U0.75Pu0.20Am0.03Np0.02)O1.98 and (U0.75Pu0.20Am0.03Np0.02)O1.95. The precursor powders were characterized using a field emission gun scanning electron microscope (FEG-SEM) to determine particle morphology, size, and size distribution. An electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) was used to characterize element distributions in the pellets.IntroductionThe fundamental purpose of GNEP is to enable a fuel recycling partnership between member nations. The customer nations utilize the fuel for electricity generation provided by and subsequently recycled by the supplier nation. The supplier nation recycles the actinide constituents, mainly uranium and plutonium, in advanced nuclear power reactors, and thus reducing waste volumes [1, 2]. Nuclear materials are strictly controlled through the International Atomic Energy Agency. The precursor powders, uranium oxide (depleted, DUO2 and highly enriched, HEUO2), neptunium oxide, NpO2, americium oxide, AmO2, and plutonium oxide, PuO2, were characterized using a FEG-SEM for particle morphology, size, and size distribution. The morphology of the actinide powders was studied in the areas of flowability and porosity in order to predict manufacturability. The MOX pellets were characterized using an EPMA in order to determine impurity levels and locations."

Successful treatment of contaminated sediments was achieved by sparging either 0.5 M NaOH solutions or distilled water with an SO2/O2 gas mixture. Metals such as Cu, Pb, Cr and Cd were successfully removed in a relatively short time. The effect of temperature and pH was investigated. Higher temperatures produced faster and higher recoveries with Pb and Cr more affected to temperature increase than Cu and Cd. The removal of copper, up to 50% percent, was achieved in alkaline solutions through the formation of copper sulfite complexes. The complete removal of metals such as Cu, Pb, Cr and Cd required that part of the treatment be carried out in acidic solutions. A preliminary cost analysis was carried out.

Ultrafine (0.1µm) spherical magnetite powder was prepared successfully by hydrothermal reaction of ferrous sulfate and sodium hydroxide with activated pyrite as reducing agent in the temperature range 120-140?. XRD and XPS analyses indicate that pH value and pyrite amount have a direct influence on the composition of the product. Stoichiometric Fe3O4 can be obtained only when pH value is 12 and the molar ratio of pyrite/ferrous sulfate is 1:1.8. The hysteresis loop of Fe3O4 shows a ferromagnetic behavior with a saturation magnetization of 75.2 emu/g and a coercivity of 152Oe.

"A typical steelmaking facility produced 50,000 tons per year of slag in their hot-metal desulfurization process. This slag had a sufficiently high iron content that it could be beneficiated and recycled in a blast furnace, provided that the slag could be agglomerated into pellets suitable for use as blast furnace feed. In this work, beneficiated slag was agglomerated using both a conventional bentonite binder, and a fly-ash-based binder (FBB) that was formulated by the investigators. The FBB consisted of a combination of highcarbon fly ash with calcium hydroxide activator, allowing the FBB to exhibit binding properties when moistened. It was determined that beneficiated slag agglomerated with FBB had superior compressive strengths compared to slag agglomerated with conventional bentonite binder. The FBB is therefore a satisfactory method of binding the agglomerated slag. Since the fly-ash component of the FBB is commonly discarded as waste, this approach also provides a means for utilizing high-carbon fly-ashes that currently have very little commercial value.IntroductionIn 2006 approximately 72.4 million short tons of fly-ash were produce in the United States [1]. The majority of fly-ash which was used that year was consumed concrete, structural fills, and cement. It is also used in road base, aggregate, and other applications. However, 55.2% of the fly-ash produced in 2006 was not utilized and ended up being sent to a landfill. Essentially all of the land filled fly-ash could be a suitable binder for pelletizing desulfurization slag and other steel plant waste oxide materials. Fly-ash based binders (FBB) have been shown in laboratory studies to be suitable for producing iron ore concentrate pellets of equivalent strengths as those bonded with bentonite [2,3,4]. The utilization of highcarbon fly-ash within the market is important for reducing the volume of currently unmarketable and land filled fly-ashes. FBB would be a much cheaper alternative to the current bentonite binder or organic binders used for iron ore concentrate and would help to reduce pellet costs. Currently, transportation more than doubles the final cost of bentonite since it is produced hundreds of miles from the pelletizing plants, while fly-ash is produced from power plants located nearby pellet plants and steel mills. FBB’s also show promise for use in other high volume applications such as foundry sand mold binders."

Electrochemical studies, particularly Evans? diagrams, have been employed in hydrometallurgy to simulate and explain the redox phenomena that take place at mineral and metal surfaces during operations such as leaching and cementation. However, despite their utility, in some cases, the combination of the cathodic and anodic branches, determined separately, does not reproduce the chemical environment present when both processes occur simultaneously on a specific surface. In the present paper, limitations of Evans? diagrams are analyzed through two examples: silver sulfide cyanidation and gold cementation on zinc. In both cases, the surface kinetics are sensitive to the local pH and cyanide levels. When the electrochemical oxidation of silver sulfide or the reduction of gold are performed in the absence of its corresponding redox reaction, the local pH obtained does not simulate the real situation and the combined reaction kinetics may be very different from those determined from the Evans? diagrams.

The formation of crud is a normal part of operating a solvent extraction circuit for the recovery of copper. It periodically must be removed from the circuit. This results in significant costs in terms of manpower, downtime, and loss of circuit organic. Field studies have been carried out that show that the presence of a thermodynamic modifier in the organic phase contributes to crud formation. In an effort to better understand what factors contribute to crud formation, laboratory studies involving competitive adsorption studies with model solids have been carried out. The results of these laboratory studies will be integrated with the results of the field studies to present a better understanding of crud formation.

This paper discusses and describes aspects of a cost effective and safe tailings impoundment selection. In light of the current low metal prices and recent tailings embankment failures around the world, it is becoming extremely more important to develop tailings impoundment design that balance cost efficiency with safety. The paper will present critical design components associated with a tailings impoundment which need to be addressed during the planning phase. Procedures for identifying various tailings impoundment alternatives, and evaluation and selection of alternatives are presented.
