The high pressure acid leach process (HPAL) is being commercially used in four plants around the world to treat limonitic laterites. The two major operating costs of the HPAL process are the sulphuric acid and the energy required to heat the pulp to the desired temperature (>240°C). As an alternative to acid injection and steam heating, the in-situ generation of sulphuric acid and heat, produced during the high temperature pressure oxidation of sulphur-bearing materials blended with laterites, has been investigated at the laboratory scale. Various sources of sulphur have been examined, in particular, elemental sulphur, pyrrhotite and a Cu-Ni low-grade bulk concentrate. Under the proper blend ratios, all sulphur sources tested generated sufficient acid to result in equivalent nickel and cobalt dissolutions. A significant improvement to the process economics can result from the addition of sulphur sources containing valuable by-products, such as nickellcobalt andlor precious metals (gold and PGMs). This is especially true in the latter case, when the HPAL can be operated under Platsol conditions (i.e. with the addition of 5-10g/L of chloride), to dissolve the base metals and precious metals simultaneously in the autoclave. Various examples of the application of this concept are presented, together with a brief discussion of its implication on the autoclave design and the downstream processes to recover the values from the leach solutions. ?It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.? Charles Darwin. Canada?s mining and exploration companies have evolved over the past century from essentially a pick-and-shovel industry to a high-tech industrial sector. This evolution has occurred in fits and starts, and has been driven by the shifting environment of economic, technical and social opportunities and pressures in Canada. As labour costs have gone up, and labour availability has gone down, the industry has evolved more efficient processes. As mineral prices have increased or fallen, the industry has evolved either by expanding or shrinking production, or by changing processes to adapt to the newly prevailing conditions. As stringent environmental protection legislation has been implemented, the industry has adapted accordingly, and has substantially changed its mindset to incorporate sustainability into its way of doing business. These changes have occurred over a number of decades, and have usually occurred as the industry?s reluctant response to pressures it couldn?t evade. This model mirrors the classical paradigm of natural selection where evolution is driven by pressures external to the organism (or organization) ? change occurs to the degree necessary for survival and prosperity, but generally no further. In recent years a new paradigm has started to come into play in Canadian mining and exploration. Rather than only a reactive response to the external economic, social and technical factors, groups within the mining community are becoming proactive in developing strategies for future adaptive change. Instead of each against the other, they are developing more sophisticated paradigms where they can both compete against (such as in marketing) and cooperate with (such as for tech development) their fellow organizations. Most importantly, they are seeing individual and national advantage in a collaborative Canadian approach to address the advantages of overseas competitors who often have lower labour costs, lesser environmental standards, or more accessible markets and transportation. This has translated into large-scale mining community support for the Canada Mining Innovation Council, and its programs in exploration, mining, processing, HR development, energy and environmental stewardship. This new paradigm is adaptive to the current environment but is substantially different from the older way of doing business in two major ways ? it is based on a collaborative approach to competitive advantage, and it is highly proactive rather than reactive. All the programs have their priorities determined principally by the mining and exploration companies, whose first obligation is to determine the long-term research priorities of the industry as a whole, rather than for their individual companies. Only after industry consensus on priorities does the research community become engaged in the implementation of specific projects to address those identified priorities. A goal of the program is to effectively create a virtual mining research laboratory, by engaging all the major research centres in the country. This approach is being actively adopted by much of the Canadian mining community, and argues well for the adaptability and long-term survival of mining in Canada.

With the gold industry looking to process more complex ores, the online measurement and control of cyanide addition to the gold leaching circuit has become more crucial. This paper compares the two commonly employed "free" cyanide online analysis methods (amperometric and potentiometric end-point silver nitrate titration) with the common site laboratory rhodanine endpoint silver nitrate titration and ion selective electrode methods. Measurement differences between these methods are presented and discussed for cyanide solutions containing copper and zinc with varying cyanide to metal ion ratios. The resulting cyanide available to leach gold is also compared with these measurements.

About fifteen years age some mines in western Canada commenced using Diesel engines, partly for development work but also for operations on quite a large scale. In the Eastern mining field, the Diesel engine made its appearance some eight years ago and has since, at quite a number of mining plants, proved to be a reliable and economical prime mover. As a result, it is today used more extensively than could have been foreseen only a few years ago, and it is reasonably safe to predict that the next few years will see the Diesel engine utilized to a still greater extent in the Canadian mining industry. It is not much more than thirty years since the first Diesel engine was put in operation. During the early years of this century, the Diesel engine took, so to say, its first faltering steps in public service. Since then it has reached a high state of perfection, and its importance has grown in a most remarkable way, until today it is used in practically every field where power is required. It is slowly but surely superceding steam for a great many purposes, as, for instance, for ship propulsion. While in 1921 only about 8 per cent of all tonnage launched was motor-driven, the proportion had grown to 38 per cent in 1927, and for 1929 it was slightly over 45 per cent. Some of the finest passenger liners afloat are Diesel-driven. In the early days, Diesel engines were built only in comparatively small units. Today engines with a capacity per unit of up to 10,000 horsepower, or even more, are being built for marine and stationary purposes.

The Bureau of Mines determined the composition of the vapors liberated during thermal decomposition of aluminium nitrate nonahydrate. Small samples were heated from room temperature to 5500 C with initial heating rates from 500 to 2000 C/min. Gases were rapidly swept away from the heated chamber with Ar and subjected to immediate analysis in order to minimize reaction between the components. In addition to H20, four N-containing compounds were identified: HN03, N02, NO, and N20. Nz could not be determined in the presence of the nitrogen oxides, and at-tempted separation from the oxides led to the formation of more nitrogen. Relative amounts of each component were found to vary over a period of time; however, total amounts measured with different heating rates were reasonably constant and were typically as follows: 84.2 pct HN03, 7.1 pct N02, 4.3 pct NO, and 4.2 pct N20. HN03 and NO were determined from chemical reactions with a permanganate solution, N20 was measured with a mass spectrometer, and NO2 was measured with a spectro-photometer. Details of the methods used are described. Since NO2 and NO can readily be converted to HN03, about 96 pct of the N from the decomposition can be recovered as HN03

Asimismo, revisa la morfología y la clasificación de las esporas y polen, como la distribución de este por corrientes y la relación de la "lluvia de polen" con la vegetación actual. Se describen también las técnicas palinológicas en la preparación de muestras, los datos sobre la preservación del polen y esporas en los sedimentos, los efectos del intemperismo y la acción que sufren los granos de polen y esporas cuando se les encuentra a grandes profundidades. De otro lado, se narra el establecimiento de zonas palinológicas como los conocimientos sobre los cambios florales, determinando que la evolución es el factor principal que se emplea para las zonaciones palinológicas, aunque las condiciones climáticas y los efectos de sedimentación no generan variaciones en la flora, siendo de importancia en trabajos de correlación local. Finalmente, a través de un ejemplo, se explica la importancia estratigráfica de los estudios palinológicos en el Perú.

This circular outlines salient facts regarding the manganese-ore industry in the United States and the world. It is founded chiefly upon published information available in the literature of the subject. The Bureau of Mines has in its files additional, more detailed data upon many of the topics presented very briefly here, and will endeavor to assist the mineral industries and public by giving further information in response to individual inquiries. The Bureau will welcome comments, criticisms, and contributions of data that may assist in making later additions of this circular more accurate, or in developing more fully its mineral files pertaining to manganese. In reporting the production of manganese-bearing ores in the United States the following classification has been adopted by the Bureau of Mines: (1) Metallurgical-grade ores, under which have been classified manganese ores containing 35 percent or more of manganese used in the manufacture of iron and steel, ferruginous manganese ore containing 10 to 35 percent of manganese, manganiferous iron ore containing 5 to 10 percent of manganese, and manganiferous zinc residuum; (2) battery ore; (3) fluxing ores, under which are classified ores that may contain a few ounces of silver and are rich enough in manganese to make them valuable chiefly for fluxing purposes in nonferrous smelters; and (4) miscellaneous ores, under which are classified the ores shipped to brick manufacturers, glass makers, and manufacturers of manganese chemicals.

Oil and gas development in Mississippi during the year 1933 was rather active and a number of important wildcat wells were drilled throughout the state. Mississippi showed an increase in drilling operations during 1933. There were 58 completions from 22 counties during this period, compared with 53 completions in 10 counties during 1932. The Jackson gas field in Hinds and Rankin counties continued to be the most active area with 26 completions, resulting in 17 gas wells, 2 oil wells, and 7 dry holes, compared with 38 gas wells, 1 oil well and 5 dry holes during 1932. A further attempt to extend the producing limits of the Amory gas field resulted in a dry hole. Extensive exploration in south Mississippi has proved the existence of ample source beds and presence of an extensive sandbody near the top of Cockfield. Core tests, supplemented by extensive geophysical work, have been carried on in Jackson, George, Harrison, Pearl River and Stone counties. Exploration will be continued in 1934. The most important deep test drilled in 1933, and the deepest well ever drilled in a southeastern state, was the Eastman Gardner et al., Bank of Seminary No. 1, sec. 26-8N.-15W., Covington County. This well went through about 1300 ft. of Selma chalk, and was abandoned in the Eutaw at 8004 ft. Another interesting operation during the past year was the Foster Creek Oil Corporation's Foster Creek Lumber Co. No. 1, sec. 14-2N.-2W., in the "Eastern Conroe Trend." This test is shut down at 3687 ft. in the Catahoula sandstone and has not encountered any important shows of oil or gas. A total of 107 of the 117 gas wells completed in the Jackson gas field since its discovery in 1930 are still producing, and have a combined open flow of approximately 3,724,896,000 cu. ft. It is reasonable to assume that this area will be rather inactive during 1934 as the maximum daily production during 1933 was 3,476,000 cu. ft. The 10 wells that have gone dead were edge wells. The water level is now between the sub-sea depths of 2190 and 2195 ft. The Gulf Refining Company's Rainey No. 1, sec. 13-5N.-lE., one of the early wells in the field, had gas and water at —2225 ft. THE benefits derived from stabilization of industry that might possibly be attained through some scheme of centralized economic planning have been much discussed of recent months, and opinions on the subject range from those who believe that some agency like the War Industries Board would be practicable to create and wholly beneficial in effects, to those who are equally convinced that none of the suggestions so far advanced are at all practicable, or likely to be productive of more of good than of evil. The discussion has been on the general topic, but-many of those who have written or spoken on it have introduced economic problems of the pinera1 industry; for example, Newton D. Baker, who referred to the coal industry in his address on economic planning at the Williamstown Institute of Politics on July 31, and then went on to say, "Industrial progress is made by the development of new things, but new things upset the equilibrium of any plan. Who could have planned the industrial effects of the development of the railroads, or the economic changes which you have seen attend the development of the internal combustion engine. Obviously, unless we are prepared to put world economics in a strait-jacket and, like the encyclopedists, write its full history on the theory that further progress is impossible, no such plan could be made for nations which are forging ahead as is entirely rational for nations which are still catching up."

This Tunnel Connection project will include construction of two short tunnels to connect the existing subway tunnels (Red and Blue lines) in the northern loop area of downtown Chicago through a new station. The Southeast Tunnel will connect the Red Line to the new station below the intersection of State and Washington Streets and the Northwest Tunnel will connect the Blue Line to the new station below the intersection of Dearborn and Randolph Streets. The connection tunnels are located in a very dense urban area of downtown Chicago and under several important historical buildings. Both tunnels are curved at the intersections and located at a depth of about 7.5 m below ground surface in saturated soft clay with an average undrained shear strength of approximately 25 kPa. The design calls for minimizing surface disruption and ground displacement while maintaining normal operation of the existing subways during the construction of the connections tunnels. This paper presents mining and cut and cover tunneling alternatives for the project.

Commercial computer "time-sharing" is a new and powerful tool for the engineer. It is a system of virtually simultaneous use of a digital computer by several individuals. Access to the computer is by means of a conventional teletypewriter which transmits over the regular telephone lines to the computer which may be located any distance from the user. Complex or repetitive computations can be programmed and the speed of computation is many times that which one can do with slide rule and desk calculator. The availability of such a commercial computer "time-sharing" system offered an opportunity to transform a tedious and time-consuming task into one that requires only a few minutes. Until the work of F. C. Bond produced widely accepted mathematical statements concerning the performance of grinding mills, the selection of the proper size equipment was done by comparison with similar operating equipment. Allis-Chalmers systematized Bond's work in a bulletin published in 1963 but the calculations are laborious and the final mill selection still required comparison of the calculated power draw with the power requirements listed in equipment catalogs. This was, however, a step forward from previous procedures. This paper discusses a rapid and simple method of determining the size and power requirement of overflow ball mills. A shared-time computer program has been developed which rapidly calculates and displays the physical dimensions, power requirements, grinding media size and quantity, as well as the important correction factors used. All of these data are calculated from input information which is usually available.

Mercury is introduced into EZ's electroly tic zinc/sulphuric acid plant complex at Risdon, Tasmania, in zinc sulphide concentrate. Mercury is volatilised during the roasting operation and then distributed in the sulphuric acid plant effluents and product acid. Following an investigation of the factors determining the mercury distribution, a plan was formulated to-provide an environmentally accep- table degree of mercury containment at Risdon. This paper discusses details of the various control measures investigated and out- lines the reasons for selecting the particular procedures finally adopted for the Risdon plant.

Based on the weld pool length and width calculations due to an empirical model (1) for submerged arc weld metal, an elegant quantitative definition of tandem submerged arc welding is established. On the basis of this theoretical consideration optimum welding parameters for joining 25 mm thick low carbon steel plate in two passes by tandem wire submerged arc welding have been experimentally found out. An assessment of the metallurgical quality of weld metal and the dependence of mechanical propenies on pool overlap has been made. Also the solution of Rosenthal (2) etc. for a moving point source of welding, which was used as a guide line in formulating the empirical model for the calculations of weld pool dimensions, is compared with the solution of empirical model for submerged arc weld pool dimensions.

"The East Side Access Project (ESA) involves the construction of geometrically complex underground structures including a large number of caverns and bifurcations. Initially conceived as dual lined structures with either traditional concrete or shotcrete final linings (SFL), construction economy, advances in concrete placement technology and scheduling among others led to a wide use of what is referred to as freeform or pneumatically applied concrete (PAC) for the construction of tunnel final linings. PAC is a method of applying concrete without using formwork, where a wet mix concrete is pneumatically installed to encase reinforcement to full lining thickness. PAC has been widely adopted at ESA well beyond initial expectations. The paper addresses the design and construction aspects of the PAC method and contrasts it to traditional SFL lining placement. The experience made provides guidance for future PAC and SFL applications. THE EAST SIDE ACCESS PROJECT AND USE OF FREEFORM CONCRETE The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) currently transports commuters from Long Island into Manhattan, terminating at the already congested Penn Station on the west side of Manhattan. Once completed, the ESA Project will provide LIRR commuters direct access to the east side of Manhattan underneath Grand Central Terminal. The ESA Project will help alleviate the congestion at Penn Station, which currently accommodates New Jersey Transit, Amtrak, and LIRR lines; reduce travel time for LIRR passengers traveling to the east side of Manhattan and facilitate connections to the New York City Transit (NYCT) Subway System and Metro North Rail Road. The construction includes mining and lining of new tunnels and facilities under Manhattan and Queens. The tunnels run from Queen’s Sunny Side Yard through the existing 63rd St. Tunnel, underneath Manhattan’s Park Avenue until termination at 37th Street. Differing types of tunneling methods and final lining systems are being used depending on the ground conditions, geometry and size of the excavation, site constraints and functional requirements. Mining of the Queens segment of the ESA Project involved soft ground tunneling by pressurized face tunnel boring machines, cut and cover construction, and conventional tunneling. The Manhattan segment of the ESA Project involves mining in hard rock by tunnel boring machines, drill and blast, and road header."

Introductory Feldspar is one of the most important mineral products consumed by the various branches of the ceramic industry. In the manufacture of table ware, electric porcelain, floor tile, and enamels, it supplies the chief fluxing ingredients necessary to bond the other more or less inert materials together when moulded into desired shape and fired in a kiln. Feldspar is used in the manufacture of bottle glass as a means of introducing alumina in a form easily assimilated. It is also used in certain scouring soaps particularly designed for cleaning enamel and glass surfaces. Feldspar, as it finds its way to the trade, is not a single mineral but is rather a mixture of various proportions of the feldspar silicate series, either in natural intergrowth or blended in the milling process, to produce a desired result. It is often further modified by the presence of quartz in amounts up to 30 per cent. The table on the next page gives typical commercial analyses of feldspar from various sources. Canadian feldspar produced to date has consisted mainly of the high-potash, relatively low-soda, variety, and has enjoyed a good market in the United States for the manufacture of enamels, electric porcelain, and vitrified table-ware. About eighty per cent of the output has been exported to the United States, but, with increased milling facilities in Canada and changes taking place in domestic United States sources of supply, the proportion exported will be reduced next year.

This article presents a simple arithmetic derivation for the relationship between sharpness of classification and circulating load, as well as world-wide industrial data which are compatible with the derived equation. It is shown that the sharpness of classification decreases with increasing circulating load. Based on the evidence available a comparison is presented between the performance of the present-day hydraulic classifiers. In a continuously operated closed circuit grinding system the tonnage and the fineness of the components may be indicated as follows: Eq. 8 expresses the relationship between sharpness of classification and circulating load in closed grinding circuits. If CL = 0, E = 100% according to the definition used. This, however, is a purely theoretical case because any apparatus to be called a classifier must produce the conventional two products. Furthermore, if CL = m, E =0%. In order to visualize the meaning of Eq. 8, the effect of factors d (fineness or percentage of under-size of classifier overflow at size x) and b (fineness or percentage of undersize of classifier sands at size x) should be studied. Periodically, the Institute of Makers of Explosives Safety Library Publications are reviewed, edited and updated to reflect recent technical developments, new commercial explosive products and new regulatory requirements. The rapid proliferation of electronic devices, particularly portable communication systems, inventory management devices, navigational aids, etc., required the revision of the IME Safety Library Publication 20, “Safety Guide for the Prevention of Radio Frequency Radiation Hazards in the Use of Commercial Electric Detonators”. The new edition of SLP-20 has been updated to correct alterations to U.S. frequency allocations and maximum transmitted power permitted and a discussion of communications and tracking systems required in underground mining by the Miner Act. Also, an entire section was added dedicated to safe distances from RF sources to the special type of resistorized electric detonators used in the upstream oil and gas industry on wellsites and an enlarged section describing the particular types of RF sources that the blaster may encounter, perhaps in construction blasting operations.
