The formation of intermediate phase layers in cementation processes has been subjected to extensive qualitative investigation though to relatively little quantitative study; this work has recently been fully summarized by F. N. Rhines.' It is necessary here only to cnumerate the general conclusions drawn concerning the kinetic laws governing the growth of intermediate layers and to state what is known concerning the structural changes accompanying the generation of phase layers. I. When the intermediate phase is protective in type—i.e., when its density is less than that of the base metal, so that a continuous coating is formed and maintained—the isothermal growth of the phase follows a simple parabolic equation: X2 = kt [i] where X is the thickness of the alloy layer, k thc reaction rate constant, and t the time. The applicability of this equation to diffusion processes is tested by plotting the square of the thickness versus time, or by plotting the thickness versus the square root of time; the resultant achievement of a straight line in such a plot has been considered sufficient proof of the validity of this equation. Exceptions have been found where liquid phases are involved in the reaction, where the diffusion layer is cracked,2 and where thin semimetallic oxide and sulphide coatings are formed on metals.$ In the first two cases the thickness increases linearly with time, and in the latter it is a logarithmic function of time. 2. The rate of thickening varics with temperature according to the Arrhenius equation: k = Ae-Q/RT [2] where k is the parabolic rate constant of Eq. I, or some other rate-descriptive function, A is the action constant, e the base of natural logarithms, Q the heat of activation, R the gas constant, and T absolute temperature. This equation has been found to be generally valid except when transformations occur during reaction in either the base metal or in the reaction layer; in such instances Eq. 2 is still applicable with different values for the constants A and Q above and below the transformation temperature. 3. Ali phases that are stable at the temperature at which diffusion occurs will appear in the interdiffusion of two components. In some cases certain of the phases may be too thin to be observed and identified easily. Nonequilibrium phases have never been noted in thick reaction layers; i.e., layers of a thickness that may be discerned microscopically. The increase in industrial demand is responsible for a consequent evolution in the process of injection of aluminum under pressure (Die Casting) to achieve requirements such as; greater geometric complexity of injected parts, larger dimensions, hard-filled cavities, thin walls, and more refined mechanical and aesthetic requirements. Thus, the industries have searched for sensible increases in pressure and injection speed, always combining the best resistance and performance of the wells submitted to the new process conditions. The need for more aggressive applications for the cavities means that there is a constant evolution of the entire production chain in the manufacture of molds, passing through several processes, among them; machining, designs with complex engineering solutions, refining in the process of heat treatments and surface treatments. Allied to these needs, high performance steels manufactured by differentiated processes with high fracture resistance, hot strength and wear must be selected. This work aims to present the main factors considered in the development of high performance molds, the engineering of materials involved, technological trends and technical engineering solutions for the different variables of the die casting process.

"Magnetic separation techniques are used extensively in mineral processing operations. Magnetic separators are robust and relatively easy to operate. As the ore get hard and low grade, fine grinding must be required mostly to allow for a high degree of mineral liberation. These processes encounter the magnetic separation process difficulty due to a significant change in the separation behavior of particles. This study investigates the effectiveness of a novel proven wet magnetic separator for the beneficiation of Lebedinsky (Russia) iron ore achieved through developing pole arrangement and tank design. Basis on the results of multiphasic simulation of a medium intensity magnetic separator (MIMS) and dense media tank using Magnetic Design Software, a new model of the MIMS separator was developed. The main of the new MIMS separator was focused on improving separation and the decreasing the number of separators in cobber stage of the plant. The new MIMS separator was tested into a pilot plant on the received samples from Lebedinsky iron ore plant. In addition to the basis on the results of the modeling, promising results of test work and previous experiences, it was claimed the unit capacity of new separator is 33.33% more than the existing separator that could decrease the number of separators. In addition, the significant energy saving in the same operational condition could be obtained without any important adverse effect on the final concentrate quality.INTRODUCTION Magnetic separation is a long-established method for the purification and removal of substances from fluids (Augusto et al., 1999; Buck et al., 2015; Hoffmann et al., 2002; Lauda et al., 2016; Lindner et al., 2010; Podoynitsyn et al., 2016; Rashidi et al., 2016), mainly in mining processing industries ranging from steel production to coal desulfurization as commercial technology (Andres, 1994; Augusto, 2002; Svoboda, 1987). High gradient magnetic separation as an effective method for recovering of weak and fine magnetic particles separation has undergone dramatic developments, and has also achieved extensive application during this time (Svoboda and Jujita, 1987). Magnetic separation operations can be categorized into high intensity as electrical (up to 20,000 gauss), Medium intensity (2000-5000 gauss) and low intensity (less than 2000 gauss) techniques. Magnetic separators offer a simple, clean and economic way to sort magnetizable ores and minerals. After pulverization, the material is run through an inhomogeneous magnetic field, where particles of different susceptibility experience different magnetic forces. The force increases with susceptibility, magnetic field and field gradient (Jongst et al., 1984).In magnetic separation, the difference in the susceptibilities of the various particulate materials is used to separate the material flow into two or more products (Wasmuth and Unkelbach, 1991). The coking time has considerable influence on the throughput of a coke oven, and for this reason a large number of papers dealing with the relationship between coking time and the different operating variables have been published. Although all factors known to influence the coking time have been studied, agreement has not been reached on several questions.2/3 Therefore, it appears worthwhile to evaluate any data that become available during investigations of the carbonizing properties of various coals and coal blends. Because it is expected that reports covering several different phases of this problem will be forthcoming as additional data-become available, the following study of the relationship between coking time and bulk density represents a report of progress on the overall investigation of factors influencing the coking time in slot-type ovens. The practice of including coarse coal in the blend going to the ovens to obtain increased bulk densities is well known. Similar increases have been realized by adding small quantities of oil to the coal mix. Although it would appear that such procedures provide inexpensive methods for increasing the capacity of existing coke-oven installations, Ramsburg and McGurl4/ point out that this increase is possible only if the additional coal can be carbonized in the same coking time as regularly employed without using abnormally high flue temperatures. This statement is in substantial-agreement with the position of Auvil and others5/ and implies that any change in bulk density may be accompanied by a corresponding change in coking time. On the other hand, a recent review of proposed methods for calculating the time required for carbonization6/ includes a number of equations that completely ignore the effects of variations in bulk density.

O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a influência das fases presentes nas misturas iniciais e finais na eficiência de desfosforação do ferro-gusa. Foram realizados 8 experimentos no forno de resistência, na temperatura de 1400°C, e além disso foram feitas simulações no software FactSage 6.4. Como resultado, obteu-se que as misturas DP3 e DP4 são as mais eficientes, possuindo tanto na mistura inicial quanto na final saturação em CaO, ou seja, atividade do CaO igual a 1; atividade de FeO maior possível e maior quantidade de fase líquida possível. As misturas com fases sólidas DP5 a DP8 apresentaram menor eficiência de desfosforação, pode-se concluir então que as fases sólidas diminuem a eficiência de desfosforação em processos reais, apesar de reterem mais fósforo no equilíbrio.

"The ceramic industry of the United States has a total yearly manufactured product of nearly half a billion dollars, despite large foreign importation.After careful investigation of the industry by the Bureau of Mines, it is the belief of those in charge that the usefulness of the industry can be greatly enlarged and the importations greatly lessened through the development of processes that will lead to a greater and better development of the ceramic resources of the United States. This will result in a greater industry with more men employed than ever before, and perhaps a world's supremacy in ceramic trade matters.Investigations in behalf of the ceramic industry are being made at the Bureau of Mines experiment ceramic station at Columbus, Ohio, under the supervision of R. T. Stall, superintendent, who reports a number of instances of practical, beneficial cooperation between the industry and the station during the last fiscal year.Graphite to Crucibles:Prior to 1914, practically all graphite crucibles manufactured in the United States were made from Ceylon graphite bonded with German Klingenberg clay. It was the general belief among graphite crucible manufacturers and users that good crucibles could not be made from American bond clays and graphites.Graphite crucibles were essential for melting certain alloys and special steels urgently needed for the manufacture of war materials. The demand for such metals was so great that it created an unprecedented demand for graphite crucibles.After the European war began no Klingenberg clay could be shipped out of Germany. However, it was fortunate for the cyucibly makers that they had large stocks of Klingenberg clay on hand. When the stock of Klingenberg clay became exhausted, it was necessary for the credible makers to turn their attention to American clays. There were no data or other information available to guide the crucible makers in the selection of good bond clays for their crucibles. It was necessary for them to select their clays more or less by ""guess"", which resulted in the period of service or life of graphite crucibles being shortened 15 to as much as 60 per cent."

In the mid-1970?s, the market value of tangible assets of S&P 500 companies far outstripped the value of intangible assets, including intellectual property (e.g., 83% tangible assets v. 17% intangible assets).1 By 2005, the picture was quite different. By that time and continuing to 2010, S&P 500 companies? market value of intangibles was about 80%, with tangible assets accounting for only 16% of market value.2 This swing highlights the importance in today?s world of understanding intellectual property rights and varying strategies and options for protecting them. This paper discusses intellectual property rights particularly patents and trade secrets, specifically: 1) types of intellectual property; 2) choosing the mode of intellectual property protection; 3) obtaining patent protection; and 4) using patents as a sword versus a shield.

The Achotla mill of the Cia. Minera de Penoles is of special interest in that it is one of the few still employing the chloridization process. The ore milled comes from the Suriana mine and consists of both oxide and sulphide, from neither of which can the gold or silver be extracted by a simple cyanide treatment. The mill was built in 1927, after several years of study in the development of the process1, and operated from December of that year until October 1930. Operations were resumed in February 1935, and have been continuous since, treating approximately 5000 tons per month, while the mine is getting up to full tonnage of 6500 tons per month. Transportation of Supplies The property is in Guerrero, Mexico, some 175 km. by airline southwest of Mexico City. The mill site is at Temisco (Fig. I), 8 km. from the Balsas River and 4.8 km. by aerial tram from the mine. At Temisco are the general office, shops, warehouses and laboratory serving both mine and mill. Here sufficient water is available either from a small creek running through the property or from the Balsas River, also convenient and ample storage space for the tailings. With the exception of the mine timber and a few native building materials which may be obtained locally, all supplies for both mine and mill are brought down the Balsas River from Balsas, the terminal of a Mexican National Railway line out of Mexico City. The method of transportation on the river is interesting. Rapids with very fast water are numerous, prohibiting the use of mechanically propelled boats. Those used resemble large, flat-bottomed rowboats some 22 ft. long by 8 ft. wide (Fig. 2). They are manned by two oarsmen sitting in the bow, each handling one large oar, and usually another man in the stern who, with his oar, assists in steering the boat, especially when the rapids are run. From 3 to 7 tons of freight are carried on each boat, depending upon the stage of the water, which governs also the time

The economic, social and political environment of the mining and minerals industries is, as we all know, volatile and affected by constantly changing international forces. In addition, the outcome of negotiations with overseas customers is often uncertain for long periods, or even unfavourable. The industries and companies represented at this Conference are in an arena of high competition, risk taking and enormous capital outlay. They are industries which our overseas markets (rightly or wrongly) have criticised for industrial relations problems, unreliable production and uncertain deliveries. They are industries which have an urgent need to be cost effective and competitive at all levels of activity.A critical factor in the mining and metallurgy industries is, therefore, its human resources and its human resource management. It requires the full use of available talent, innovation, skills and qualifications within its workforce, and the appropriate management of these resources.

The new copper processing plant of the Sarcheshmeh copper complex consists of two parallel circuits. After a primary crushing, the ore is sent to a SAG mill and the product is further ground in a ball mill. The overflow of the hydrocyclones is fed to a flotation circuit which contains 8 rougher tank cells (RCS130), 3 cleaner cells (RCS50), 5 scavenger cells (RCS50) and a 4 x 12 m flotation column as recleaner. The circuit was initially designed to process a feed containing 0.8% Cu, but because of the ore type change, the feed grade decreased to 0.6% Cu. This resulted in a reduction of final concentrate grade and recovery from 28 and 85.5% to 24 and 84.4%, respectively. Based on the original design, the copper and silica recovery in the cleaner cells should be 69 and 55%, respectively, but these values increased to 85 and 75% because of a higher retention time. The rather high silica recovery (i.e., 75%) was found to be the main source of the lower final concentrate grade. In order to reduce the retention time of particles in the cleaner cell from 13.7 to 6.9 min, the rougher concentrates of two parallel circuits were fed to only one cleaner-scavenger and regrind circuit. This modification increased the cleaner and final concentrate grade from 15.1 and 24.5% to 17 and 26%, respectively. To prevent a possible reduction in the copper recovery, the froth depth in the scavenger cells was reduced. The overall outcome of the circuit modification was evaluated to be a 10% reduction in the energy consumption without any loss in the overall copper recovery.

Timber support of mine openings continues to be an effective system for ground support, due to its avail¬ability, flexibility, and ease of installation. Timber support of mine openings as a primary method to support loose rock has been replaced to a large extent by rockbolting and by filling systems. How¬ever, the many designs of square-set timber and varia¬tions of crib and stull support that have been developed to suit many stope configurations have proven reliable over many years of application. Integrated in modern excavation and stoping methods, timber remains an im¬portant ground support material for today's mines. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TIMBER SYSTEMS Timber, when used as a part of the total support system, is recognized for its unique support properties. More than a cover to prevent minor falls of ground, timber systems have been carefully designed to provide adequate support with sufficient compressive qualities to achieve a safe working environment in extremely diffi¬cult ground conditions. In some cases, a timber support method is designed to yield while retaining its protec¬tive support qualities. Little or no initial investment in equipment or plant is required for incorporating timber into the mining support system. Low cost cutoff saws and portable chain saws are sufficient equipment for effective use of dimen¬sioned (sawed) or round (stull) timber support. Until recently, small sawmills of various complexity were com¬mon at mine surface plants. Sawmills at the mine sites have generally been replaced by timber vendors' mills. Suppliers have been able to use efficient cutting and lumber handling methods to reduce the cost of mine timbers. Most suppliers will package dimensioned mine timber into bundles that are suitable for handling down mine shafts and on level conveyances. The principal disadvantage of timber as a support method is higher material cost and labor cost associated with its labor-intensive installation. Furthermore, stand¬ing timber reserves of mine quality wood are in short supply in some areas, and heavy competition exists for alternative uses of the timber supplies. Vendors are reluctant to supply large cross section dimension tim¬bers relatively free of defects. Some mine operations require 4.8-m (16-ft) lengths of firm timber over 0.09 m2 (144 sq in.) in section and these are difficult to obtain in large quantities. APPLICATION OF TIMBER FOR MINE SUPPORTS Timber used in mine support has been cut from many species of trees. A firm hardwood with physical properties similar to western Douglas fir has been pre¬ferred in the US. Other harder and softer woods, how¬ever, have been used when readily available or where the specific strength or crushing quality of the wood is a desired specification of the support system design. Hard¬ wood, commonly oak, has been used where maximum crushing resistance is required. Mahogany and fir are widely used for shaft guide timber. Normally, timber is used with its core axis parallel to the long axis of the timber dimension. However, in some cases, it is placed normal to its core in a "butt" log position, so as to provide maximum resistance to abrasion of the ore passage adjacent to the cut end of the block. By selective placement of timber block¬ing, controlled resistance to ground closure can be achieved which will prevent early failure of primary sup¬port members of the timber structure. Timber is widely used in modern mining operations as a construction member for chute-lip support. These designs are tailored to each operation to conform to the dimensions of the haulage equipment being used. As a construction material, wood requires none of the spe¬cial equipment necessary for placement of concrete or steel support. Placement of these alternate support ma¬terials requires carefully dimensioned and engineered excavation for their installation. Wood can be easily sawed to fit on location. The successful use of timber in heavy ground de¬pends on the careful and accurate placement of block¬ing and bracing to achieve the controlled yielding re¬sistance needed to support the mine opening. Similarly, frequency, size, and placement of top and bottom block¬ing stulls in flat-bedded deposits are carefully determined to provide adequate support at the mining face. Con¬trolled caving through failure of the stulls may be required as the scope retreats from the earlier mined-out sections. The support program must achieve both of these dimensionless qualities by specification of stull frequency and size. The utility of the square set-system of ground sup¬port and timber support is described in Chap. 2, re¬printed from US Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6691. Four examples of effective use of timber for support of stoping and other mine openings are pre¬sented in other chapters in this section. The Gilman mine's use of Mitchell slice stoping described in Chap. 3 is an early modification of the square-set mining system. This application proved reli¬able for heavy ground and overcame some of the dis¬advantages of conventional square-set timber. Chap. 4 describes the Burgin mine's use of timber with other reinforcement material. This combination of materials achieved high strength and control with yielding com¬ponent members necessary for heavy, squeezing ground. Chap. 5 describes the Bunker Hill mine's use of square¬set timber in a new configuration that provides an effi¬cient and safe support for stoping using small load¬haul-dump (LHD) mobile equipment. Comparative data from ASTM method of test E-162 and large-scale trials in the Experimental Mine show that the flame-spread quality of brattice cloth and other ventilation control materials can effectively be evaluated by either method. Materials having a flame spread index of 25 or less, as determined by the simpler and more economical laboratory test ASTM E-162, do not present a serious fire hazard when used in coal mines.

Dense Medium Separation (DMS) technologies are used for light (coal, lithium) or heavy (chromite, iron ore, diamonds) minerals concentration, but also for ore pre-concentration (Pb/Zn) or waste (plastics). Dense media are mainly formed from a suspension of magnetite or ferrosilicon in water. Such DMS circuit design or optimisation requires a full and detailed material balance which can be obtained by the aid of modelling and simulation tools. This balance is not limited to ore and its valuable minerals, but also the recovery of the dense medium itself. If the density is the main property used for separation, the particle size plays a non-negligible role, and, more precisely, the liberation classes which can be associated to the washability curve. The paper presents how the modelling and simulation platform USIM PAC can answer this challenge with the set of models for DMS operating units such as drums or cyclones, and their associated screens (drainage, rinsing) and magnetic separators for medium recovery. A relational database in which its complex contents can be navigated through a map interface (ie spatially enabling) is relatively a new concept yet attractive for geoscience fields. This concept is made possible using the new breed of geographic information system (GIS) that utilises component object model and relational database management system. Such sophisticated yet open and highly interoperable platform makes possible the integration of data management, analysis, and modeling processes into single workflow. Taking benefit of this technology trend, several initiatives emerge in geoscience to establish digital data models, such as the petroleum industry, the North America digital geologic map data model, and the ESRI geology data model. The mining industry unfortunately has not followed same paths due to the lack of data model and standards in its history. This paper presents an effort on establishing a digital data model for mining-related geoscience databases. The aim is to promote several standards by proposing a preliminary data model and demonstrating that the model is working for the mining business datasets. The case study is the island of Java, the western part of the Sunda island arc of Indonesia. Many types of datasets, such as geologic maps, topography, mineral deposits, structures, geochemical and geophysical data were dealt with and were transformed relational geologic databases of Java using the new Geodatabase geographic data model. Intelligent GIS tools were investigated for geologic applications, ranging from generic to specific purposes. Subtypes and domain were used to set up constraints, while topology rules and relationship classes were used to create links among data layers. The linear referencing system was used to model drillhole data. The current results show that the generic GIS and relational database can handle typical tasks related with mining business datasets. A preliminary data model is finally suggested.

Although blasting remains the most inexpensive method of fragmentation in hardrock mining, the significance of the costs of blast-induced rockmass damage in terms of mining efficiency and safety is becoming increasingly recognized. There is no straightforward and systematic method of adequately measuring blast damage in on-going mining operations. This paper considers various techniques available to measure blast damage, making particular reference to recent underground hardrock mine studies. It concludes by proposing a damage audit procedure for integration into routine mine production control.

The object of this research was to investigate the technical feasibility of preparing chromium metal by the thermal decomposition of bisbenzene chromium. Bisbenzene chromium, a pi-bonded sandwich type organometallic compound, was thermally decomposed under reduced pressure to form a metal plate on a heated substrate. Metal recovery was close to 100 percent of theoretical, with deposition rates up to 20.8 mg/hr/cm2. Metal purity was dependent not only upon the purity of the starting material, but also upon the sublimation rate of bisbenzene chromium. Total detectable metallic impurities ranged from a low of 18 ppm to several hundred ppm. In general, metallic impurities were less than 100 ppm. Carbon, the major nonmetallic impurity, ranged from less than 0.3 percent to more than 10 percent. The carbon contamination is most likely a result of the decomposition of the organic portion of bisbenzene chromium. An unusual property of some of the deposits was their outstanding corrosion resistance. Unlike pure electrolytic chromium, which dissolves readily, these deposits were insoluble in hot mineral acids.
