Keywords: Kyoto Protocol, carbon credits, global warming, energy, auditing Climate change is nowadays being taken increasingly seriously, and the link between global warming and the carbon dioxide released in the generation of energy is coming under increasing scrutiny. The Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997, after five years of negotiation. So far, about 84 countries have ratified this agreement, under which terms developed countries have strict targets linked to their 1990 level of emissions. However, ?greenhouse gas? (such as carbon dioxide) emissions continue to rise alarmingly. According to the World Resources Institute, greenhouse gas emissions in the USA increased 13% from 1990-2002, while Australia recorded a 22% increase. In contrast, the European Union, a Kyoto signatory, has seen a small decline in its emissions during the same period. This is led by the UK and Germany, who reduced their emissions by 15% and 19% respectively. The concept of ?carbon credits? provides a funding mechanism for companies in the developed world to compensate for some of their CO2 emissions by paying companies (trading credits) elsewhere in the world to undertake projects to bring about reductions in emissions. In the southern African mining industry, it will be possible to get refunded for undertaking voluntary emission-reduction projects. Concern about the environment is creating business opportunities. A preliminary calculation has shown that various projects in South Africa (those in the pipeline, with quite a high likelihood of coming off) could earn a combined total of about R2.5-billion, under the initial phase of the Kyoto Protocol's carbon-credit scheme, which allows developed-country companies to trade credits with developing countries. A number of local companies are planning projects that could comply with the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), in which they will implement techniques to achieve certified emission reductions (CERs) of greenhouse gases. In order to prevent abuse of such a system involving vast sums of money, vigorous audits need to be carried out. A company has to prove it has made real changes and is not simply conducting business as usual under a cloak of claimed environmental improvements. PricewaterhouseCoopers has applied to become one of only a few international agencies that will be accredited to conduct validation and verification of the credits, by auditing what is called the ?designated operational entity?. An independent validator needs to confirm that the project meets the strict requirements of the Kyoto Protocol. The company has to demonstrate that it?s not business as usual. So, if you refurbished every five years, the next refurbishment is not a good CDM project, unless you can demonstrate that you will do something beyond the maintenance - that is what can be registered. So, Kyoto intends to get additional projects going, and the money for that is actually quite good - prices of 14 euros per ton of carbon dioxide not emitted have been seen. The price depends on who takes the risk for non-delivery if a project doesn?t deliver the emission reductions on time. The highly energy-intensive South African mining industry is heavily dependent on coal. There should be many opportunities for the pyrometallurgical industry to come up with creative ideas to reduce emissions, and there is now an additional financial incentive to encourage this. Companies can actually get money in return for doing these types of projects, in addition to the contribution to corporate social responsibility.

Many deep well waste disposal. operations have adopted the technology of the petroleum industry but fail to make full use of the knowledge and experience upon which this technology is based. Inexperience in subsurface exploration commonly leads industrial personnel to an over simplified understanding of the complex subsurface rock/fluid environment and overly optimistic "degree of exploration /adequacy of knowledge" ratios. Several fundamental differences between disposal and petroleum production are discussed. In particular, the evolution of understanding of the subsurface in relation to degree of exploration is demonstrated by summarized case histories of such other forms of subsurface fluid exploitation as oil pro¬duction and underground gas storage, tracing subsurface interpretations from the initial exploratory concept to that of fullest development. Evolutionary changes in interpretation and their significance as applied to deep well disposal are stressed.

The role of the virgin in situ stress field in tunnelling projects is well known in the Sydney area. The effect of in situ stresses is mostly considered through the use of published relationships that describe the in situ stress conditions as a function of depth. Considering the significant scatter in the data, it is evident that by adopting such relationships, the designers are assuming an average distribution of stresses with depth that is generally a reasonable engineering approach; however, when building a geomechanical model, the tunnelling or geotechnical engineer needs to account for the interrelationship between ground conditions (rock mass quality – fracturing, strength and stiffness) and in situ stress, which may explain part of the stress data scatter. This paper presents an alternative approach for interpreting in situ stress conditions, valid for both Sydney sandstones and shales that focus on such interrelationship between in situ stress and ground conditions.CITATION:Oliveira, D A F and Parker, C J, 2014. This paper presents a 20-year global account of tunneling in gassy ground demonstrating high probability of schedule delays, cost overruns, worker injuries and fatalities. Causes of these failures are systemic. Gas is seldom characterized in terms relevant to design of effective ventilation systems. Control measures deployed in tunnels are often based on outdated industrial safety codes. A change in approach is needed. This paper describes how to perform a desk study to determine if field investigation for gas is warranted, and lists the content of an effective characterization of gas in a geotechnical report.

A utilização da pré-concentração de minerais é um processo já conhecido e que gera ganhos significativos em termos de aumento de teor de alimentação das usinas. Tal processo, porém, gera produtos de granulometria fina que dificultam, ou mesmo impossibilitam, a avaliação da abrasividade destes pelo ensaio de Bond, método mais utilizado atualmente na indústria mineral. O ensaio LCPC se apresenta, então, como uma alternativa para avaliação da abrasividade de materiais que se encontram em uma granulometria mais fina. O objetivo principal do trabalho apresentado neste artigo é avaliar o índice de abrasividade de minérios que passaram por um processo de pré-concentração e tal avaliação foi realizada por meio do LCPC. Foi possível observar que, para a amostra de cobre, a pré-concentração resultou em um concentrado de abrasividade menor que a alimentação, o que torna o processo vantajoso como uma etapa anterior ao beneficiamento propriamente dito. Já no caso do zinco, observou-se uma maior abrasividade no concentrado, o que sugere a concentração dos minerais abrasivos no concentrado, ao contrário do que seria esperado, que seria uma maior concentração de minerais mais abrasivos na ganga.

Aluminum extrusions are widely used for automotive crash management systems due to their superior specific energy absorption capabilities, as compared to steel. The Al-Mg-Si alloy series can be readily extruded into complex multi-hollow profiles, as required in crash systems, and can be used to target a range of desired strength levels. This paper focuses on the development of an axial crush test protocol and evaluation of the crush performance of common 6XXX series alloys for a variety of tempers. The observed crush behaviour is then compared to tensile test results.

A new high intensity flotation process 'FASTFLOT' is explained and its theoretical advantages compared with other flotation systems are discussed. The results of initial FASTFLOT testing on the zinc roughing circuit at Pasminco Mining, Broken Hill South concentrator are presented and compared to recent plant data. The comparison suggests that on roughing duties, the FASTFLOT process yields superior concentrate grade while requiring less than one third the residence time of a conventional mechanical cell plant. Strategies for FASTFLOT deployment are also presented.

"Best practice for acid rock drainage (ARD) risk assessment still relies solely on the geochemical properties of sulfidic rocks and mineral processing products, despite the fact that a rockÆs tendency to produce acid also depends on mineralogy and texture. Consequently, there are a plethora of geochemical tests routinely utilised by the mining industry to predict ARD formation. Due to limitations associated with these tests and their relatively high costs, analysis of recommended best practice sample numbers is rarely achieved, reducing the accuracy of waste management plans. Our research addressed this through examining the application of geometallurgical data for predicting acid formation, and led to the identification of potential environmental geometallurgy indicators.Samples obtained from an iron-oxide copper gold deposit were subjected to the geochemistry-mineralogy-texture (GMT) approach, an improved methodology for classifying acid forming potential. GMT results were compared against geometallurgical and assay data sets to evaluate: relative carbonate content measurements (measured by HyLogger) and identify how these could be used to calculate effective acid neutralising capacity mineral hardness (measured by EQUOtip) to determine application of this data for calculating lag-time to acid formation opportunities to automate the acid rock drainage index (ARDI) using classified images produced by a GEOTEK logger and automated microscopy.Links between the GMT approach and geometallurgical data sets were identified. Classified mineralogy data has application at stage one, HyLogger and EQUOtip at stage two and computer-based ARDI evaluations of classified images at stage three. Through such integration, ARD characterisation costs can be reduced, with value added to geometallurgical data sets. Furthermore, deposit-wide ARD domaining is possible, and acquisition of total-orebody knowledge more likely. Through adoption of this environmental geometallurgy approach, a better informed waste management plan can be formulated, allowing for best practice ARD sampling in a more cost-effective manner.CITATION:Parbhakar-Fox, A, Lottermoser, B and Bradshaw, D J, 2013. Deposits of rare earth elements (REE) are found in NM, but they have not been important exploration targets in past years because demand has been met elsewhere. However, with the projected increase in demand and potential lack of available production from China, the New Mexico deposits are being re-examined for their potential. REE-Th-U veins are found in the Gallinas, Caballo, Capitan, and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Past production of bastnaesite has come from the Gallinas Mountains. Carbonatites are found in the Lemitar and Chupadera Mountains, Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills, Lobo Hill, and Monte Largo (Sandia Mountains). Although carbonatites have not been found in the Gallinas Mountains, they are suspected to occur in the subsurface based upon mineralogy/alteration. Disseminated Y-Zr deposits in syenite are found at Pajarito Mountain, Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation near Ruidoso. In 1990, Molycorp, Inc. reported historic resources of 2.7 million short tons grading 0.18% Y2O3 and 1.2% ZrO2 as disseminated eudialyte. Two additional deposit types have potential for REE in New Mexico: Cretaceous heavy mineral, beach-placer sandstone deposits and pegmatites. Exploration is ongoing in the Lemitar, Gallinas, and Cornudas Mountains.

The saddle-point activation energy for the nu-cleation of a pair of kinks is estimated as a function of the applied stress, the lattice constants, and the height and shape of the Peierls' hill by employing the line-energy model of a dislocation. The kinetics of disloration motion by the Peierls' mechanism are discussed and the microscopic dislocation velocities and macroscopic strain rates are formulated by the Arrkenius type of approach in terms of the activation energy for the formation of pairs of PEIERLS was the first to illustrate that a straight-dislocation line has its lowest energy when it lies in a potential valley parallel to lines of closest packing kinks. The log of the dislocation velocity is found to be approximately proportional to the log of the local applied stress. It is also shown that the low-temperature mechmical properties of several bcc metals might be explained in terms of the Peierls mechanism, good agreement being obtained between theory and experiment for the flow stress us ternperature, activation energy vs stress, and activation volume us stress curves for these metals. of atoms on the slip plane. This research was done to reduce silica from mixed hematite concentrate of Barfkar Iron Ore Sample and increase Fe grade using reverse flotation method (Depressing Hematite and floating Silica). The used sample in the reverse flotation tests was a mixture containing two types of hematite concentrates (Spiral cleaner concentrate and Slon-VPHGMS cleaner concentrate) with the percentage of 16 per cent and 84 per cent, respectively. Fe grade of two samples was 59.31 per cent and 57.52 per cent and SiO2 grade was 5.83 per cent and 6.71 per cent, respectively. After mixing, the Fe and SiO2 grade of the mixed sample was measured at 58.10 per cent and 6.20 per cent. For flotation tests, effect of variable operational parameters including feed size distribution (d80 = 130 microns and d80 = 53 microns), pulp solidity (25 per cent and 30 per cent w/w), pH (9.70, 10.20 and 11), Sodium silicate as a dispersant (500, 1000 and 2000 g/ton), Starch as a depressant (500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 g/ton) and EDA as a collector (180, 300, 400 and 500 g/ton) were investigated. For evaluating the influence of Sodium silicate and Starch dosage, initial flotation tests were performed on the main sample (d80 = 130 microns). These two parameters had no significant effects on the yield, Fe, and SiO2 grade of flotation concentrate based on test results. In the next step, screen analysis was carried out on the main sample for mineralogical studies. Accordingly, the suitable size distribution for releasing Fe and SiO2 particles was smaller than 53 microns. Therefore, the sample was crushed until d80 = 53 microns. Then, supplementary tests were performed on the crushed sample for studying the pH range, pulp solidity, and EDA collector dosage. After doing silica removal flotation tests based on the designed pattern and comparison of the results, the conditions consisting of size distribution d80 = 53 microns, pulp solidity 25 per cent, pH 10.20, Sodium silicate 1000 g/ton, Starch 1000 g/ton, and EDA 500 g/ton was selected as optimum values. In the last test, Fe and SiO2 grade was measured at 60.00 per cent and 3.93 per cent, respectively, and Fe recovery was obtained at 74.93 per cent.

The investigation and uptake of filtered tailings continues to grow around the world, but cost and scalability are deterrents for mining companies. Filtration technology that is currently in use is unable to meet the needs of many operations and projects that would otherwise adopt filtered tailings. For tailings to reach the desired moisture content for dry stacking, the majority of processes require pressure filtration, with significant upfront and ongoing maintenance costs. Given the comparative lower costs associated with low-pressure Viper vacuum belt filtration, this technology has the potential to alleviate dependency on high-pressure applications and make efficient dewatering and handling of tailings a more economic and sustainable solution.

This manual provides instructions for installling, operating, and maintaining protective canopies on the Joy Mfg. Co. cutter. These instructions are based upon two actual installations: one made in a mine and one in the factory. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopies are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other cutters with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions herein would be applicable to the other cutters and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.

IN the early days of Colorado mining, between 1880 and 1900, when Leadville, Kokomo, and Robinson were boom mining camps, the entire area around Climax for a matter of fifteen miles was overrun with prospectors, so the mineralized outcrop at Climax was not unknown. The principal interest in minerals during this period was in gold, silver, and lead, and since the Climax outcrop showed none of these it drew little attention. Geology played an important part in bringing prospectors to the very edge of the Climax deposit. The Mosquito fault, which crosses near the base of Bartlett Mountain, continues as an important geological structure, at least as far as Leadville some twelve miles distant, and at the base of Bartlett Mountain the vertical throw on the fault is estimated to be between 2000 and 5000 ft. The sedimentary beds known to the Leadville district are all present on Bartlett Mountain to the north of the Mosquito fault, which cuts them off abruptly, and exposes the Pre-Cambrian rocks that underlaid them, so the prospectors, who were searching for gold, silver, and lead in the sediments

A new sensor based sorting system related to complex image analysis has been developed at Comex AS - Norway. It makes it possible to separate different mineral particles regarding their color, shape, texture, size, density and indirectly their composition. The sorting system has been successfully tested and applied for sorting minerals providing high separation efficiency in the range of 95-99.9 %. The main advantage of this system is connected with its universality where many material parameters are analyzed in the same processing unit by a single passage.

THE Joint Committee appointed to consider a Code of Ethics for Engineers recommends, after delib-erate consideration, that each participating Insti-tute or Society adopt the short simple Code of Ethics following this report. The Committee further recommends that the following method of interpreting and administering the Code be adopted by each participating Institute or Society after any necessary provisions have been, made in the Constitution and By-laws of the Organization. The President of each Society or Institute shall appoint a Standing Committee on Professional. Conduct, to administer the Code of Ethics. The duties of such a Committee shall be to interpret the Code and to render opinions on any cases of ques-tionable conduct on the part of members that may be submitted to the Committee. These interpretations shall be reported to the Executive Board of the Institute or Society who may approve these interpretations, or take such other action as may seem just and necessary. The reports of the Committee on Professional Conduct, when approved by the Executive Board, shall be printed in abstract and in anonymous form in the Institute's or Society's monthly journal for the instruction and guidance of fellow members. This Committee on Professional Conduct shall be appointed in each Institute or Society by the President holding office at the time of the adoption of this Code and shall consist of five member one appointed for five years, one for four years, a third for three years, a fourth for two years and a fifth member for one year only. Thereafter, the President then holding office shall appoint one member annually to serve for five years, and shall also fill any vacancies that may occur for the unexpired term of the member who has withdrawn. These appointments shall he made from among the older members of the Institute or. Society, so that advantage may be taken of their mature experi-ence and judgment. The Committee after appointment shall elect its own chairman and secretary. The Committee shall have power to secure evidence or other information in any particular case not only from the organization's own members, but if it should seem desirable, from men in other professions. The Committee may also appoint sub-committees to consider certain cases when deemed necessary.

Este trabalho tem o propósito de avaliar a temperabilidade de um aço SAE 1040 através da utilização do ensaio Jominy e posteriormente promover tratamentos térmicos, gerando nos corpos de prova condições de arrefecimento diferenciadas para avaliar a influência da severidade de têmpera da salmoura e óleo. A curva de ensaio Jominy gerada apresentou um comportamento coerente para um aço com médio teor carbono. Já os tratamentos térmicos que foram realizados posteriormente revelaram que o meio que gera o maior acréscimo nas propriedades mecânicas é o resfriamento em salmoura, haja vista que os corpos de prova submetidos a este resfriamento apresentaram o maior de dureza.

The geologist is often called upon to give judgment on the possibilities of reviving a former mining field presumably worked out as far as the evidence then available indicated. From time to time, scarcity and consequent high prices of metals has led to there-examination of many old fields. The possibility of resuming investigation on them where the practical miner ceased work, even where he had the aid of the trained geologist, has long since disappeared.Means of access to mines have been removed and water fills the workings. Hence an indirect mode of attack becomes essential.This method depends mainly on past history, and may be described as a reaching out by faith supported by shrewd guessing from the known to the unknown. Apart from whatever general intelligent observations may be made in situ of the evidence of former mining activity, the method depends largely on the examination of the past history of the field as revealed in the official records, company reports, plans of underground workings, local newspaper accounts, and the testimony of practical miners formerly employedon the field, the' reliability of which has to be carefully sifted. The matter derived from the examination of these sources must next be rigorously collated and correlated where possible. When the review of all individu!1l features and aspects has been completed, tentative and speculative conclusions may be drawn which, though not verifiable before the event, will usually prove to be more serviceable guides in exploratory operations than mere "blind stabbing."As an actual illustration of what is involved in the mode of procedure outlined above, the following is the description of an investigation in which the writer took part.In 1937, during the course of the Commonwealth Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia, a detailed geological investigation was undertaken of the Croydon gold field, situated near the south-eastern. extremity of the Gulf of Carpentaria in North Queensland.The history of the field briefly is as follows: It was discovered in 1885, reached its peak of production 1896, declining thereafter till 1906, when operations ceased. The total production was about 1,000,000 ounces of gold bullion, containing approximately 40 per cent. of silver. The gold bullion was won from flat-dipping quartz reefs, which yielded an average of 2.oz. to the ton, and the maximum depth to which production occurred was 500 feet. Subsequent prospecting below this depth failed to locate further ore.In consequence of the inaccessibility of the mines and the almost total masking of the' surface by alluvium, the investigation of future possibilities became largely an. office ,study, which was conducted under the following headings:-1. Enterprise unmanned traffic management (E-UTM) is a holistic system concept evolving from technological developments in radio frequency (RF), where dynamic tracking can be added into current and emerging platforms. This is done through inexpensive RF sensors capable of real-time and cooperative, non-GPS tracking enabling digital visualization of assets, including unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The RF sensors are low in size, weight and power (SWaP), creating efficiencies in energy and material consumption while transmitting positions in real time and at long ranges. Multiple UAS and other unmanned vehicles can be visualized for risk mitigation in operations, thus enabling mine management to have better decision-making capabilities in the current and future mosaic of mine operations.
