OLEIC acid, a standard flotation reagent, has generally been preferred to other fatty acids. Because oleic acid differs from saturated fatty acids by the presence of one carbon-to-carbon double bond and because the flotation operation is one in which extremely intimate exposure of the reagent to oxygen is obtained, it appeared possible that the value of oleic acid as a flotation collector was related to the oxidizability of its double bond. To test this hypothesis, the floated mineral, fluor-ite, was leached with a solvent capable of extracting the adsorbed reagent and the extract was analyzed.' Results show that oleic acid is not oxidized during flotation, although some oxidation can be obtained if the flotation operation is repeated many times and if oxygen in place of air is employed as the gas during flotation. Incidentally, it was found that lino-leic acid which has two nonconjugated double bonds is not affected appreciably more than oleic acid. Linolenic acid which has three nonconjugated double bonds is measurably altered even during one flotation step, using air. The fatty acids used, from the Hormel Foundation, were of the highest purity. The quantity of fatty acids employed in each test was sufficient to float the mineral, but less than the theoretical amount required to form a monolayer at the mineral surface. The purpose of this limitation was to eliminate droplets of oil smeared on the adsorbate-covered mineral surface. The mineral was dried in vacuum at about 60 °C. Effective leaching was obtained by use of a solution of 1 pct hydrochloric acid in absolute alcohol. The extract was separated from the solvent by distillation, with final recovery of the extract in carbon tetrachloride. The identity of the extract was tested by a combination of analytical procedures including infrared spectroscopy, saponification number, iodine number, and index of refraction. At the outset, great hopes for accurate quantification of oleic acid oxidation had been entertained in regard to the method of infra-red spectroscopy. Unfortunately, because the double bond in the oleic acid is so sym- metrically located at the center of the molecule that it provides very weak absorption bands, accurate quantitative analyses were not obtained. Nevertheless, infra-red spectrograms suggested the absence of double-bond oxidation during flotation. Iodine number, semi-micro method, provided a critical test of the extent to which fatty acids oxidized during flotation, see Table I. The index of refraction was used in a qualitative rather than quantitative fashion, and its findings corroborated those obtained by the iodine-number method. It is concluded, in the case of fluorite and C-18 fatty acids having one or two nonconjugated double bonds, that there is practically no change of the fatty acid molecule or ion during the flotation operation. It would appear, therefore, that the extraordinary utility of these reagents is related to some property of the compounds other than the oxidizability of their double bonds. I. INTRODUCTORY METALLURGICAL research has discovered many an alloy possessing properties not combined in any single metal, and progress still consists chiefly in the investigation and utilization of alloys. In the case of iron, the demands of automobiles, high-speed machines and high-duty engines have led to the production of special iron alloys which will meet any reasonable specifications in that field. In like manner, the bronzes, brasses and other alloys of copper have been brought to remarkable perfection, and for nearly every industrial purpose some alloy has been found more suitable than the pure metal. Less complete success has attended the attempt to find substitutes for gold, platinum, and the other precious metals. Indeed, it is not likely that a material can be produced which will possess all the properties of any one of them; yet it is reasonable to hope that, for any given use, the properties required may, be found in some less expensive material. Thus, in incandescent electric lamps, the wire passing through the thick glass neck of the bulb was, until recently, almost universally made of platinum, for the single reason that no other known material, suitable as a conductor, had the same coefficient of expansion as glass. But a comparatively recent investigation of the iron-nickel series' has shown that alloys of those metals may be produced, the coefficient of expansion of which can be accurately controlled between that of iron or nickel and zero. Thus, in that particular industry, a substitute for platinum has been found. According to statistical reports, not only considerable quantities of gold and iridium, but also more than one-third of the annual supply of platinum, are used (and, in the nature of the case, irrevocably lost) by dentists. Platinum is thus employed in several forms. Experimental work on liquefaction of coal was taken up by the Bureau of Mines in 1936 when it became evident that a prudent policy from the national point of view should include preparation for the time when gradual exhaustion of petroleum resources would require supplementing the growing demand for motor fuel with gasoline and diesel oil from coal. At that time (1936) certain foreign nations that had no home sources of petroleum, especially Germany, England, and Japan, were conducting active research and at least two of them were producing liquid fuel from coal on a commercial scale. Germany was reported to have an annual producing capacity of 800,000 metric tons of gasoline per year, and England had just put into operation the Billingham plant of Imperial Chemical Industries for the hydrogehation of bituminous coal and tar by the Bergius-I.G. process. The annual capacity of this plant was about 150,000 long tons of gasoline per annum (3500 bbl. per day). With these developments taking place in foreign countries, it seemed important to undertake a long-range program of fundamental research in this country to establish a sound groundwork for the evaluation of foreign work on synthetic liquid fuels and at the same time to obtain data on the oil yields and operating difficulties using various kinds of American coals and lignite to the hydrogenation process. The results of such research would be useful in determining the yields and quality of liquid products obtainable from various coals so that American industry would be in position to select the most suitable coals and make rapid progress in establishing this new industry when the commercial need should arise. It was hoped, also, that progress in a better understanding of the chemistry of coal hydrogenation would reduce the cost of the process materially. To carry out this program, a small continuous unit capable of hydrogenating 100 Ib. of coal in 24 hr. was installed at the Central Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh, Pa. Small steel autoclaves or bombs of 0.3 gal. (1.2 liters) capacity also were used for batch-hydro-genation experiments in the study of the chemical fundamentals of the process. Much valuable assistance was obtained in planning the experimental program and designing the equipment from the Fuel Research Station of Great Britain and the Fuel Laboratories of the Mines Department of Canada, where such investigations had been in progress for several years. MUCH insight has been gained into the nature of the cold-worked state of metals in recent years through the use of modern X-ray techniques. These methods have revealed the existence of stacking faults together with regions of high internal strain and have provided means of measuring the atomic perturbations in plastically deformed metals. In view of the recent increased interest in the solid state, it is desirable to extend these techniques to the study of lattice imperfections introduced into semiconductors during plastic deformation. It is of particular interest to compare the state of imperfection sustained by metallic bonding with that sustained by the covalent bonding found in semiconductors. A knowledge of the imperfections which can exist in semiconductors is important from both a theoretical and a practical point of view since they can greatly influence many of the physical properties. In order to determine the possible existence of stacking faults in covalently bonded structures, precise measurements were made of the diffracted peak positions of plastically deformed germanium, gallium antimonide, and indium antimonide. These measurements were based on the theoretical treatment of Paterson1 and are similar to those employed by Warren and warekois2 in their studies of deformed a brass. In addition, diffraction peak profiles were measured on the annealed and plastically deformed materials in order to obtain information concerning the distribution of internal strains through the use of the Fourier methods developed by Warren and Averbach.3 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES AND TECHNIQUES Because of the room-temperature brittleness of the semiconductors studied, it was necessary to plastically deform the materials at elevated temperatures. The brittle-ductile transition temperature ranges of GaSb and InSb are sufficiently low to permit hot-filing operations. Products made from the ores of the sillimanite group, and synthetic substitutes for them, have unique properties, and service tests prove that they are playing, and will continue to play, a major part in improvements in metallurgical processes. Also, they are examples of how comparatively useless, rare, or "museum" minerals have been made available in commercial quantities. Until research developed uses for them, the minerals had been observed only in small, scattered masses, or crystals. Improvements in ceramic processes and compositions have come about very gradually. In the last 10 or 15 years, several outstanding developments have been made. Of greatest interest to the mining and metallurgical engineers are those affecting the composition, necessitating the mining of new minerals, and improvements in ceramic products used in metallurgical processes. Sillimanite and Mullite Sillimanite (Al2O3.SiO2), then known as Fibrolite, according to Dana,' was first reported in 1792. In 1796, cyanite (Al2O3.SiO2) was first described.2 In 1873, Behrens published results of his microscopic study8 of porcelain. He showed that it contained what appeared to be crystals, which dissolved less readily than quartz and glass in hydrofluoric acid. Hussak4 described the presence of needlelike crystals as occurring in some instances in small amounts in certain porcelains. In 1908, Plenske and Zoellner both studied porcelain structure.5 Plenske observed that "sillimanite" might be present in masses of exceedingly minute grains which apparently were amorphous. Zoellner advanced the theory that the needlelike crystals were formed by a molecular change in the clay,

The wellbore acts as a storage tank during drawdown and build-up testing and causes the sand-face flow rate to approach the constant surface flow rate as a function of time. This effect is compounded if non-Darcy flow (turbulent flow) exists near a gas wellbore. Non-Darcy flow can be interpreted as a flow-rate dependent skin effect. A method for determining the non-Darcy flow constant using this concept and the usual skin effect equation is described. Field tests of this method have identified several cases where non-Darcy flow was severe enough that gas wells in a fractured region appeared to be moderately damaged. The combination of wellbore storage and non-Darcy flow can result in erroneous estimates of formation flow capacity for short-time gas well tests. Fortunately, the presence of the wellbore storage eflect permits a new analysis which can provide a reasonable estimate of formation flow capacity and the non-Darcy flow constant from a single short-time test. The basis of the Gladfelter, Tracy and Wilsey correction for wellbore storage in pressure build-up was investigated. Results led to extension of the method to drawdown testing. If non-Darcy flow is not important, the method can be used to correct short-time gas well drawdown or build-up data. A method for estimation of the duration of wellbore storage effects was developed. INTRODUCTION In 1953, van Everdingen and Hurst generalized results published in their previous paper3 concerning wellbore storage effects to include a "skin effect", or a region of altered permeability adjacent to the wellbore. Later, Gladfelter. Tracy and Wilsey4 presented a method for correcting observed oilwell pressure build-up data for wellbore storage in the presence of a skin effect. The method depended upon measuring the change in the fluid storage in the wellbore by measuring the rise in liquid level. To the author's knowledge, application of the Gladfelter, Tracy and Wilsey storage correction to gas-well build-up has not been discussed in the literature. It is, however, a rather obvious application. Gas storage in the wellbore is a conlpressibility effect and can be estimated easily from the measured wellbore pressure as a function of time. Several approaches to the wellbore storage problem have been suggested. As summarized by Matthews, it is possible to minimize annulus storage volume by using a packer, and to obtain a near sand-face shut-in by use of down-hole tubing plug devices. Matthews and Perrine have suggested criteiia for determining the time when storage effects become negligible. In 1962, Swift and Kiel' presented a method for determination of the effect of non-Darcy flow (often called turbulent flow) upon gas-well behavior. This paper provided a theoretical basis for peculiar gas-well behavior described previously by Smith. Recently, Carter, Miller and Riley observed disagreement among flow capacity k,,h data determined from gas-well drawdown tests conducted at different flow rates for short periods of time (less than six hours flowing time). In the original preprint of their paper, Carter et al. proposed that the discrepancy in flow capacity was possibly a result of wellbore storage effects. Results of an analytical study of unloading of the wellbore and non-Darcy flow were recorded by carter.14 In the final text of their paper, Carter et al.!' stated that they no longer believed wellbore storage was the reason for discrepancy in their kgh estimates. In view of the preceding, this study was performed to establish the importance of non-Darcy flow and well-bore storage for gas-well testing. In the course of the study. a reinspection of the previous work by van Everdingen' and Hurst' was made, and the basis for the Gladfelter, Tracy and Wilsey' wellbore storage correction was investigated and extended to flow testing. WELLBORE STORAGE THEORY As has been shown by Aronofsky and Jenkins,11-12 Matthews," and others, flow of gas can often be approximated by an equivalent liquid flow system. The following developnlent will use liquid flow nomenclature to simplify the presentation. Application to gas-well cases will be illustrated later. First, we will use the van Everdingen-HursP treatment of wellbore storage in transient flow to establish (1) the duration of wellbore storage effects, and (2) a method to correct flow data for wellbore storage. DURATION OF WELLHORE STORAGE EFFECTS When an oil well is opened to flow. the bottom-hole pressure drops and causes a resulting drop in the liquid level in the annulus. Electrochemical measurements have been made of the activity of oxygen in copper and its alloys with silver and tin at 1100" and 1200°C. The galvanic cell used was Pt, Ni + NiO/solid ellectrolyte/[O] in metal, cermet, Pt The results do not support any of the equations so far designed for predicting the activities of dilute solutes in ternary solutions from activities in the corresponding binaries. If, however, a quasichemical equation is used with the coordination number set to unity, agreement between observed and calculated activities shows that this empirical relationship can be useful over a fair range of conditions. SEVERAL solution models have been proposed for predicting the activity coefficients of dilute solutes in ternary alloys from a knowledge of the three binary systems involved. Alcock and Richardson1 have shown that a regular model, and a quasichemical model,' in which the dissolved oxygen is coordinated with eight or so metal atoms, can reasonably predict the behavior of both metal and nonmetal solutes when the heats of solution of the solute in the separate solvent metals are similar. But when this is not so, neither model gives useful predictions unless coordination numbers of one or two are assumed. Wada and Saito3 subsequently adopted a similar model to derive the interaction energies for two dilute solutes in a solvent metal. Belton and Tankins4 Rave proposed both regular and quasichemical type models in which the oxygen is bound into molecular species, such as NiO and CuO in mixtures of Cu + Ni + 0. However, their models have only been tested on systems in which the excess free energies of solution of the solute in the two separate metals differ by a few kilocalories. Ope of the reasons why more advanced models have not been proposed is because few complete sets of data exist for ternary systems in which the solute behaves very differently in the two separate metals. For this reason measurements have been made of the activities of oxygen dissolved in Cu + Ag and Cu + Sn. Measurements on both systems were made by means of the electrochemical cell, Pt, Ni + NiO/solid electrolyte/O(in alloy), cermet,Pt [1] The activity of oxygen was calculated from the electromotive force and the standard free energy of formation of NiO, which is accurately known.5 Before investigating the alloys, studies were made of oxygen in copper to test the reliability of the cell and to check the thermodynamics of the system. Of the previous studies those by Sano and Sakao,6 Tom-linson and Young,7 and Tankins et al.8,7 have been made with gas-metal equilibrium techniques; those by Diaz and Richardson,9 Osterwald,10 wilder," Plusch-kell and Engell,12 Rickert and wagner,13 and Fischer and Ackermann14 have been made by electrochemical methods. EXPERIMENTAL The apparatus employed was the same as described previously,9 apart from slight modification. The molten sample of approximately 40 g was held in a high grade alumina crucible 1.2 in. OD and 1.6 in. long. The solid electrolytes were ZrO2 + 7½ wt pct CaO and ZrO2 + 15 wt pct CaO; the tubes 4 in. OD and 6 in. long were supplied by the Zirconia Corp. of America. They were closed (flat) at one end. In one experiment with Cu + O, both electrolytes were used in the cell at the same time. The reference electrodes inside the electrolyte tubes consisted of a mixture of Ni + NiO. They were made by mixing the powdered materials and pressing them manually into the ends of the tubes, with a platinum lead embedded in them. The tubes were then sintered overnight in the electromotive force apparatus at 1100°C. By sintering the powders inside the tubes (instead of using a presintered pellet9) better contacts were obtained between the electrolyte, the powder, and the platinum lead. Troubles arising from polarization9 were thus much reduced. The electromotive force was measured by a Vibron Electrometer with an input impedence of 1017 ohm; the temperature was measured with a Pt:13 pct Rh + Pt thermocouple protected by an alumina sheath. The couple was calibrated against the melting point of copper. The cermet conducting lead of Cr + 28 pct Al2O3, previously found to be satisfactory9 for use with Cu + 0 was also found satisfactory with Cu + Ag + 0 and Cu + Sn + 0. Superficial oxidation was observed, but it did not interfere with the working of the cell. The reaction tube containing the cell was closed at each end with cooled brass heads and suspended in a platinum resistance furnace. The tube was electrically shielded by a Kanthal A-1 ribbon which was wound round it, and the ribbon was protected by a N2 atmosphere between the furnace and the reaction tube. The cell was protected by a stream of high purity argon which was dried and passed through copper gauze at 450°C and titanium chips at 900°C. All the metals used were of spectrographic standard. The operating plant of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. is situated at Port Pirie in South Australia and it treats to finality the whole output of lead concentrates from the mines of The Zinc Corporation Ltd., North Broken Hill Ltd., and aroken Hill South Ltd. at Broken Hill, New South Wales. Lead bearing ores from other sources are also purchased for treatment and lead scrap and residues are treated on a toll charge basis. The present output of the plant is approximately 200000 tonnes of refined lead per annum and there is a substantial production of by-products including refined silver, gold, cadmium, antimonial lead alloys, copper matte and sulphuric acid. Recently the Company commenced the production of zinc by slag fuming and electrolysis from a six million ton dump of lead blast furnace slag, which has been accumulating at Port Pirie for over fifty years. The slag fuming plant contains two furnaces of conventional design, but features a high degree of pre-heat for the blast air and this is obtained by the use of all-metal recuperators. The raw zinc oxide fume produced by the plant is roasted in a rotary kiln prior to treatment in the leaching and electrolysis sections, which follow conventional practice for nigh current density plants. Present output is approximately 36000 tonnes of electrolytic zinc per annum.

The reduction of chromous oxide from lime silica alumina slags by carbon-saturated iron behaves as a first-order process having a rate of 0.001 grams Cr min 1 cm 2 (pct Cr ) , substantially independent of slag composition and temperature over an important range for iron smelting. The equilibrium ratio (pct Cr)/[pct Crl is below 0.04 for slags having lime-silica ratios above 0.6. MANY studies have been conducted on chromium in slag-metal systems under oxidized conditions. In the study of the chemical reactions orcurring in the open-hearth furnace, it is frequently assumed that a condition of equilibrium between slag and metal is attained. In order to test this assumption it is necessary to have dependable operating data as well as an exact knowledge of the equilibrium state. Considerable progress has already been made in the study of slag-metal equilibria, notably in the earlier work of Hertyl and of Oberhoffer and Schenck2 and in the more recent researches of Krings and Schack-mann3 and of Koerber and Oelsen.4 None of these investigators, however, have employed basic slags comparable to those encountered in basic open-hearth practice, so that up to the present time our only information regarding the equilibria of these slags is based upon observations drawn from steelmaking practice in which there is little assurance that actual equilibrium was attained. The original plan of this investigation was to secure simultaneous slag and metal samples at intervals during the making of an open-hearth heat, recording the heat history in detail and obtaining complete allalyses of slag and metal, then to bring these slag samples into equilibrium with liquid iron in the laboratory induction furnace and thus to determine directly whether or not the observed relationships in the open hearth represent conditions approaching equilibrium. This plan was only partly successful. While slags were obtained from the open hearth under satisfactorily recorded conditions and these were re-melted in the laboratory under equilibrium conditions, changes in slag composition, which accompanied the remelting operation, were so great that the final slag from the induction furnace bore little resemblance to its open-hearth parent and the direct comparison was therefore abnndoned. The results, however, lie within a range of slag composition that is of interest in the making of low-carbon steel. As far as we are aware, they represent the first published laboratory study of equilibria involving slags that contain all the con stituents of basic open-hearth slag. Experimental Heats The first set of measurements on slag-metal equilibrium was made in the Research Laboratories of the American Rolling Mill Co, at Middletown, Ohio. This will be known as series A. The second set was made in the Metallurgical Rescarch Laboratories at Massachusetts Institute of Techology, and will be referred to as series B. In the study of the chemical reactions orcurring in the open-hearth furnace, it is frequently assumed that a condition of equilibrium between slag and metal is attained. In order to test this assumption it is necessary to have dependable operating data as well as an exact knowledge of the equilibrium state. Considerable progress has already been made in the study of slag-metal equilibria, notably in the earlier work of Hertyl and of Oberhoffer and Schenck2 and in the more recent researches of Krings and Schack-mann3 and of Koerber and Oelsen.4 None of these investigators, however, have employed basic slags comparable to those encountered in basic open-hearth practice, so that up to the present time our only information regarding the equilibria of these slags is based upon observations drawn from steelmaking practice in which there is little assurance that actual equilibrium was attained. The original plan of this investigation was to secure simultaneous slag and metal samples at intervals during the making of an open-hearth heat, recording the heat history in detail and obtaining complete allalyses of slag and metal, then to bring these slag samples into equilibrium with liquid iron in the laboratory induction furnace and thus to determine directly whether or not the observed relationships in the open hearth represent conditions approaching equilibrium. This plan was only partly successful. While slags were obtained from the open hearth under satisfactorily recorded conditions and these were re-melted in the laboratory under equilibrium conditions, changes in slag composition, which accompanied the remelting operation, were so great that the final slag from the induction furnace bore little resemblance to its open-hearth parent and the direct comparison was therefore abnndoned. The results, however, lie within a range of slag composition that is of interest in the making of low-carbon steel. As far as we are aware, they represent the first published laboratory study of equilibria involving slags that contain all the con stituents of basic open-hearth slag. Experimental Heats The first set of measurements on slag-metal equilibrium was made in the Research Laboratories of the American Rolling Mill Co, at Middletown, Ohio. This will be known as series A. The second set was made in the Metallurgical Rescarch Laboratories at Massachusetts Institute of Techology, and will be referred to as series B. A NUMBER of articles have been published, notably those by R. S. Handy, R. T. Hancock and A. P. Watt in Engineering and Mining Journal, dealing with the calculations involved in ore dressing.. These publications demonstrate both, the importance of the subject and the lack of success in developing a generally recognized method for comparing enrichment effects. Considering that we may wish -to compare enrichment results on similar or dissimilar ores, that we may desire to make the comparison on the basis of either the absolute or the economical efficiency, and that the number of factors upon which the result depends is large, the question arises whether it is possible to set up a positive method for such calculations. In the following pages it is our aim to show that a sure, complete and successful way to overcome existing difficulties has been found. In view of the recent advance made in the knowledge of the nature and conditions accompanying the occurrence of oil and gas, and of the recent activity in drilling in Wyoming, Montana, and western Canada, a discussion of the probabilities of obtaining production in such a reservoir as the Dakota sand in general, and in particular districts, is thought by the author to be timely and likely to result in more intelligent operating in certain parts of the territory underlain by this sand. In Canada particularly it is thought that these general considerations have equal if not more significance in a consideration of the oil and gas possibilities of the formations than have the various local conditions. Age and Nature of Deposition of the Dakota Sand The Dakota is distinctive in that it is known to form a generally continuous sheet of sand underlying the greater part of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, North and South Dakota, Montana, and large areas in Nebraska, Colorado, and Wyoming. It does not seem to have been laid down in more or less isolated lenses, as has been the case with most oil-sand horizons. Except in northern Alberta, the Dakota sand contains fresh-water fauna, having been deposited very uniformly over these wide areas in shallow water with prevailing strong currents. In northern Alberta marine and brackish water conditions prevailed. In this district it forms the basal member of the Cretaceous sediments, directly overlying beds of Devonian limestone along a great unconformity in the Athabasca River valley and eastward. In southern and western Alberta it is underlain unconformably by the Kootenay shales (Lower Cretaceous), and by Jurassic and Carboniferous rocks. The steady-state creep behaviov of zirconium and zivcaloy-2 was examined in the temperature vatlge 520° to 620°C A1 low stresses the creep rates were cimracterized by a linear stress dependence; at highev stresses the stress dependence was much more pronounced. Temnperature-cycling tests yielded values for the aclivation enevgy for creep. Various tlzeories were examined in the ligltt of- the experimental re-sults and it mas concluded that the low-stress creep behavior is the result of the stress-direcled diffusion of vacancies along gain boundaries. It has been observed,"&apos; usually under conditions of high temperature and low stress, that creep deformation can occur for which the steady-state creep rate is linearly dependent on the applied stress. For magnesium and certain magnesium alloys, Harris and ones&apos; and ones&apos; have argued that this type of creep occurs by mass transfer as a result of the stress-induced generation and migration of vacancies, along a gradient defined by the stress direction. Jones&apos; demonstrated that the rate-controlling diffusion path is sensitive to grain size and temperature, and that by suitable control of these variables creep could occur by vacancy diffusion either predominately along grain boundaries or through the lattice. Recently, Jones3 suggested from an examination of limited high-stress data for zircaloy-2, composition in Table I, that significant diffusion creep could occur at low stresses, at least between 375" and 500°C, controlled by grain boundary vacancy diffusion. This process could have an important implication in assessing the role of zirconium alloys as a structural or cladding material in certain classes of nuclear reactors, since it predicts creep deformation far in excess of any estimates based on extrapolating slip creep data from higher stress levels. If the diffusion creep process occurs it should be possible to describe the total steady-state creep rate of zirconium and its alloys as the sum of two terms, Eq. [I]; the first term relates to a slip creep process important at high stresses and which is manifested by a much more pronounced dependence of creep rate on stress4 than diffusion creep and the second to a process controlled by mass transfer,5&apos;6 dominant at low stresses: where A and BI are parameters which can depend on structure, Ql and Q2 are the activation energies for the particular creep process occurring, and n describes the sensitivity of the creep rate on stress. It is the purpose of this paper to present some direct experimental evidence in support of this view. It is recognized that other analytical approaches have been proposed to explain data of this kind and these will also be discussed. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Flat creep specimens (gage length 1 by 0.25 by 0.02 in. approx) were prepared from cold-rolled, argon-remelted, crystal bar zirconium and cold-rolled commercial-grade zircaloy-2, the analyses of which are given in Table I. The specimens were annealed at a pressure of < 10-5 Torr at temperatures from 625" to 675°C for 2 hr and slow-cooled. This treatment produced stable grains of average size (defined here by the average linear intercept) of for zirconium and -4xin. (-10 p) for zircaloy-2. The specimens were tested in a dead load tensile creep rig. The stress was maintained constant by adjusting the applied load after approximately each 1 pct of strain. The specimen temperature was controlled to better than +1°C. This system had a small thermal lag, so that rapid temperature changes were possible. The study of the possibility of effecting a lower cost in the manufacture of pig iron reveals the importance of the ever present question of slag chemistry and volume. Factors that determine slag chemistry and volume are the impurities in the ore available, the ash-sulphur content of the coke, and a flux material necessary to promote removal of sulphur. Of these, the ores present by far the major source of impurities and what may prove to be the lowest practical slag volume with desired chemistry in one locality may be considered low or high in some other center of iron manufacture. The Chicago district is not only blessed with ores of high quality, but with excellent coke and flux materials as well. It is the intent of this paper to discuss slag problems at the South Works only, where burdens consist of Mesabi ores, Michigan stone, and coke ranging from 7 to 9 per cent ash and containing an average of 0.57 per cent sulphur. Early in the development of modern blast-furnace practice, the consideration of slags was secondary to the many adjustments of mechanical difficulties, such as furnace lines, stock distribution, stove design for obtaining higher blast temperatures, improved chemical segregation and size of raw materials. Furnace operators, after making these improvements, turned their attention to the study of other refinements in practice, of which slag chemistry appeared to be the most important. It is only within the last two decades that operators have become familiar with the various aspects of slag compositions. The industry, while rather slow in its recognition, is indebted to such investigators as Rankin,1 Wright,1 Feild,2 Royster,2 McCaffery,3 Kinney,4 Holbrook,5 and Joseph,5 whose researches concerning the elimination of sulphur within the blast furnace and the effect of slag composition upon melting point, viscosity, and desulphurizing power have established criteria for the selection of slags of the requisite quality. It may be said that the history of gold in the Black Hills begins with one of South Dakota&apos;s most. interesting relics, the so-called Thoen Stone, now in the Adams Memorial Hall at Deadwood. This slab of reddish sandstone, about 14 in. square, was found in by Louis and Ivan Thoen, at the base of Lookout Mountain, near Spearfish, a town in the northern foothills of the Black Hills uplift. Both sides of the stone bear clearly legible inscriptions. One side reads: Came to these hills in 1833. Seven of us, De Lacompt, Ezra Kind, G. W. Wood, T. Brown, R. Kent, Wm. King, Indian Crow. All ded but me, Ezra Kind. Killed by Indians beyond the high hills. Got our gold June 1834. On the reverse side: Got all the gold we could carry. Our ponys all got by the Indians. I hav lost iny gun and nothing to eat, and Indians hunting me. Attempts were made to trace these men. Relatives of Brown were found in Missouri, and it was learned that he had left for the West in 1832, with one Kent. Kind&apos;s relatives were also found, and stated that he had started West the same year. None of them had been heard from since their departure. So Kind failed to get out with "all the gold we could carry"; 15 years later California became the center of the first great gold rush, and the Hills waited 40 years for their gold to be rediscovered. It is interesting to speculate on what might have been "the course of Empire" had this little group won through. The history of Dakota, of Montana, indeed, of all the Northwest, might have been very different. When, late in 1875, the goldseekers arrived, they passed quickly northward from the first discovery near Custer, and soon were established on Deadwood Creek, along which, as well as for short distances above the mouths of its tributary streams, Blacktail and Bobtail, placer operations went forward vigorously. These placers were near the northern outcrop of the Homestake ore-body. Their gold was partly derived from this, perhaps in greater quantity from the erosion of the conglomerate or cement deposits, of Potsdam time, themselves a "fossil placer" or beach deposit formed by
