A baseline of the poisoning effect of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) fuel impurities on solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) anodes was developed using polarization testing. After the baseline behaviour was characterized, tests to study the effect of various H2S concentrations on the rate and amount of cell voltage degradation and recovery were performed. Attempts were made to improve the rate and amount of recovery by various methods. Testing was very reproducible, but significant electrochemical performance degradation was seen after all H2S poisoning tests even at an H2S concentration of 0.1 ppm. Degradation is initially quite rapid, but after a period of time the rate of degradation levels off. After poisoning was complete, the H2S flow was stopped and the cells were allowed to recover. Some recovery was seen after poisoning, but cell performance was never fully recovered.

"Chevron notched samples achieve general acceptance for measuring the Mode-I (opening mode) fracture toughness of rocks. The cracked chevron notched semi-circular bending (CCNSCB) sample, which is developed from the International Society of Rock Mechanics suggested the cracked chevron notched Brazilian disc method, has recently received much attention. However, these chevron notched methods have not been fully mastered, some ideal assumptions based by their theories and formulas, such as the straight-through crack assumption (STCA), have not been verified detailedly. Fractures of CCNSCB specimens were numerically simulated considering different heterogeneities, geometrical and mechanical parameters. The results show that, the real fractures of CCNSCB specimens are never satisfied with the STCA. In fact, micro fractures not only occur in the notch tip but also the two chevron edges. Consequently, the crack front features prominently in a shape of parabolic curve, far from being straightthrough. Moreover, curvature of the crack front is only affected by shape of the chevron ligament. Cracks usually start from two sides of the notch tips rather than center of the notch width, and propagate deviating from the postulated fracture routes. These fracture mechanisms induce errors with the measurements, and thus more attentions should be paid to the real fractures of the chevron notched samples for measuring fracture toughness more accurately. INTRODUCTIONWith the increasing requirement of people for resources and energies, frequent rock engineering activities have been conducting, such as underground excavation, oil exploration and deep burial of nuclear waste. Many problems appear in rock fracture. Consequently, there are more and more attentions paid in rock fracture mechanics due to its broad application prospects for solving these engineering problems. Since Mode-I (opening mode) fracture is the most common failure mode in rocks, Mode-I fracture toughness is a primary parameter to predict rock mechanical properties in actual engineering, and thus its accurate values are necessary to the researches of rockburst, rock mass slope stability, rock cutting, hydraulic fracturing, tunneling, et al. Therefore, it is thus significant to evaluate and study relevant methods to obtain the reliable value."

Crowing pressures on aggregate resources include diminishing reserves, high transportation costs, sterilization and land use conflicts. In the absence of detailed resource knowledge for a particular region, aggregate resource potential maps provide the best "first approximation" regarding the surficial distribution of sand and gravel. The 1:50 000 scale Level Ill aggregate potential map integrates several important factors which influence the management of sand and gravel. Data used to generate this type of thematic map is readily available in most areas, fieldwork required is minimal, there is a logical quantitative evaluation of the data layers and integration is easily accomplished on a desktop PC-based platform. Also the aggregate potential map, with its focus on identifying areas of potential future aggregate exploitation as well as present inventory, provides a useful tool for the aggregate explorationist.

"This paper deals with the repairs made on two damaged mills. It investigates briefly the causes of the damage, explain its nature and the design of the repair. It explains the detrimental effect on operation and the solutions implemented to reduce them. Finally, to review the follow-up required for such repairs. LOCATIONThe Holt McDermott Mine is located 75 kilometers Northeast of Kirkland Lake and 30 kilometres west of the Quebec border in Northeastern Ontario. The town of Kirkland Lake is located approximately 500 kilometres north of Toronto. HISTORYThe discovery of gold in Holloway Township dates back to early 1920. In 1984 Barrick Resources, which amalgamated with Camflo Mines, acquired more claims on the property and initiated an extensive drilling program. By 1985, the drills indicated reserve increased to 2,500,000 tonnes grading 6.8 g/mt. In 1986 a production decision was made and in 1988 the mine was officially opened.As of December 31, 1998, 4,691,507 tonnes grading 5,66 g/tonnes have been milled from 4 ore-bodies. The mill started up in June 1988."

ABSTRACT: The Kupol project, located in Far East Russia, treats a high-grade, free-milling ore containing 25.5 g/t Au, 298.3 g/t Ag, and 0.5% pyrite,with a P70of 53 microns. Most of the gold occurs as elec-trum and the silver is predominantly present in the forms of acanthite, stephanite, pyrargyrite, andproustite. The mill reached the design throughput of 3,000 tpd six months after start-up. AKnelson con-centratorrecovers10.4% gold and 0.5% silver. Leaching (14.5 hours pre-treatment and 116 hours cyanidation)of gravity tailings is performed with the CANMET Enhanced Leach Process (CELP),using only 490 ppm NaCN (cyanide consumption of 1.1 kg/t). The precious metals are recovered by counter-current decantation and the Merrill-Crowe process. Calcium hypochlorite destroyscyanide and thiocyanate. Overall, gold and silver recoveries for 2008 were 95.4% and 85.6%,respectively (2.8% and7.5% higher than targets). In the first eight months of 2009, gold and silver recoveries were 95.0% and82.6%, respectively. By August 2009, the mill processed 1.42 million tons of ore with production of 1.1 million ounces of gold and 11.3 million ounces of silver. CELP performance was not affected by changes in feed grade and ore mineralogy. Additional modifications to the leaching strategy allowed further reduction in cyanide consumption and effluent treatment costs.

"The Star Lake Mill was commissioned by Cameco (formerly Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation) in 1986 to process a small high grade gold deposit in a remote location of Northern Saskatchewan. The lean approach to the 200 t. p. d. CIP mill to minimize capital and operating costs employs a number of unique features which are described along with highlights from the initial two years of operation.1.0 INTRODUCTIONThe Star Lake Mine is located 520 kilometers north of the City of Saskatoon (Fig. l) with the nearest population centre in La Ronge 130 km to the south. Gold showings were first discovered in the area in the 1940's with the Star Lake ""21 Zone"" ore body discovered in 1983. The Star Lake Mine started operations in 1986 becoming the first primary gold producer in Saskatchewan in over 40 years. The mine is operated by Cameco (formerly SMOC) with 50\ ownership in a joint venture with starrex Mining Corporation (35\) and Uranerz Exploration and Mining (15%).The limited reserves coupled with the remote location and the price of gold ($300-$350 u.s./oz) at the time the project feasibility was being assessed required a lean approach to make the short term operation successful. This paper describes the approach taken in the design and construction of the Star Lake Mill and describes the mill operation with highlights of the initial two years of operation."

"The analysis of meso- and micro-scale textural attributes has been undertaken on ore samples from the Ernest Henry iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) deposit in NW QLD. Quantified textural data including grain size, shape and mineral association have been extracted from classified images of core with the aim to better predict potential mineral processing behaviours such as comminution, liberation and flotation. Data have been extracted from images of intact core at meso- and micro-scales using high resolution continuous images collected using automated core-logger technology, SEM-based and optical microscopy platforms.The results of this study will show examples of quantified size, shape and mineral association data from meso- and micro-scale classified images. Analysis of the data shows that there are domains of variable grain size and mineral association that can potentially be related to crushing and liberation behaviour. The trends that are observed at the drill-core (meso-) scale are consistent with those at the micro-scale. The results from the micro-scale analysis show that the domains defined at the core-scale have clearly different chalcopyrite sizes and shapes as well as variable bulk mineralogy.INTRODUCTIONInnovations in technology have allowed automated extraction of information about mineral shape, grain size and mineral association, i.e., texture, from meso- and micro-scale images of intact rocks. The overall aim of this research is to investigate trends in quantified textural data that can potentially give an early view of processing parameters such as predicted grind size and liberation behaviour."

Previous papers (1, 2) pertaining to the treatment of uranium-bearing ores were concerned with the flotation of the radioactive minerals. In this investigation, the application of flotation to the removal of acid-consuming minerals from uranium ores was considered. Two pitchblende-bearing ores, which, because of the presence if dolomite were abnormally high acid consumers, were studied. In both in-stances commercial reagents of widely varying fatty acid composition proved satisfactory as flotation col-lectors, particularly at a pH of 10.5, for the carbonate minerals. From an economic viewpoint, however, Neo-Fat 42-12 was favoured. A mixture of sodium tripolyphosphate and citric acid was an effective depressant for the pitchblende in the ores. The tailings remaining after the removal of the dolomite by flotation contained, in one case, 88.5 per cent of the uranium in the original sample, and, in the other, 93.8 per cent. "Batch and continuous regrind tests were conducted in 3 kW and 15 kW tower mill units, respectively. Single particle size classes of a chilean copper sulphide concentrate were employed in the batch tests, while a fraction of the plant stream was deviated to the continuous unit operated under different conditions.Results are interpreted in terms of the simplified grinding kinetic model energy-based and conveniently adapted to this application. Based on the above figures plus some industrial data supplied by MPSI Inc., a scale-up relationship was developed for the apparent specific rate of breakage siE, as a function of the net power draw P, i.e.siE = siE text (P/P test) 0.089This equation fit very well the available data at the three scales and its application to regrind 4400 t/day of rougher copper concentrate from 70% below 325 Tyler mesh to 95% below same mesh, involves around 30% energy-saving compared to standard ball mill for same grinding task.INTRODUCTIONImpact and abrasion-attrition breakage are two extreme mechanisms present in any grinding system in a proportion defined by specific design and operating conditions. Impact breakage is generally efficient for coarse grinding, while abrasion-attrition is adequate to produce fine particles. Efficiency of conventional tumbling mills decreases as fineness of the product increases, even though distribution of applied stresses is always much stronger than internal force distribution in the particles. On the other hand.in a vertically stirred ball mill like the tower mill, distribution of applied stresses and particle strengths are in the same order of magnitude, making possible nearly ideal abrasion conditions (1).Tower mill configuration includes a cylindrical body vertically mounted and provided with a central screw with flights to produce circulation of balls moved up through the inner region to return down by the external space. Fresh material can be fed into the top , center or bottom in order to assure appropriate agitation of suspended particles. Size reduction and evacuation rates should compensate settling of coarse particles to avoid sanding of the screw. "Abstract - The 12.1 Mt Brunswick No. 6 Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag massive sulfide deposit (New Brunswick, Canada) lies between two subaqueous felsic volcanic formations near the base of the Middle Ordovician Tetagouche Group. The footwall comprises rhyodacitic pyroclastic rocks (Nepisiguit Falls Formation), whereas the hanging wall comprises a sequence of rhyolitic flows, breccias, and hyaloclastites (Flat Landing Brook Formation), with an age difference of less than 3 m.y. The Brunswick No. 6 deposit is a proximal autochthonous deposit with a well-zoned massive sulfide body and a basal Cu zone that, at depth, develops into a stockwork stringer sulfide (feeder) system. The massive sulfides are capped sharply by a layered magnetite-chert unit that extends regionally beyond the deposit. The deposit has a keel shape (sheath) formed by the F1F2 interference pattern. The heterogeneous ductile deformation and upper greenschist-grade regional metamorphism has transposed many of the epigenetic stockwork structures and alteration within the host sequence. Hydrothermal alteration is much more extensive, both vertically and laterally, in the footwall (a few 100 m) than in the hanging wall (<100 m). Anomalies farther up in the hanging wall sequence seem to be associated with independent alteration systems related to the rhyolite domes. The least-altered footwall units exhibit keratophyric alteration (albite or adularia) and weak Mg enrichment (chlorite). More intense micaceous (sericite and Mg-rich chlorite) alteration occurs around the footwall sequence. The transposed stockwork stringer sulfides are typically composed of Fe-rich chlorite (± sericite, ± silica) with pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, and sphalerite. The (Fe2O3T+MgO)/(Na2O+K2O) and base metal alteration indices are the best practical lithogeochemical vectoring tools at this deposit. Sommaire - Le gîte de 12.1 Mt de sulfures massifs de Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag Brunswick No.6 est localisé entre deux formations volcaniques felsiques sous-marines situées près de la base du Groupe de Tetagouche d’âge Ordovicien Moyen. Le mur consiste en roches pyroclastiques rhyodacitiques (Formation de Nepisiguit Falls) tandis que le toit consiste en une séquence de coulées, de brèches et d’hyaloclastites de composition rhyolitique (Formation de Flat Landing Brook); la différence d’âge entre les deux est de moins de 3 m.y. Le gisement Brunswick No. 6 est un gîte autochtone proximal comprenant un corps de sulfures massifs clairement zoné ainsi qu’une zone cuprifère basale qui passe progressivement à un stockwork de filonnets de sulfure en profondeur (feeder). Les sulfures massifs sont abruptement surmontés d’une unité laminaire de chert et de magnétite dont l’extension par delà le gisement est régionale. Plusieurs des structures épigénétiques du stockwork et des patrons d’altération de l’encaissant ont été transposés par la déformation ductile hétérogène ainsi que par le métamorphisme régional au faciès des schistes verts. L’altération hydrothermale est beaucoup plus importante, tant verticalement qu’horizontalement, dans le mur (quelques 100 m) que dans le toit (<100 m). Les anomalies situées plus haut dans le mur semblent être reliées à des systèmes d’altération indépendants associés aux dômes de rhyolite. Les unités les moins altérées du mur une altération kératophyrique (en albite ou en adulaire) ainsi qu’un faible enrichissement en Mg (chlorite). Une altération en mica (séricite et chlorite magnésienne) plus intense est présente autour de la séquence du mur. Les sulfures du stockwork de filonnets transposés consistent typiquement en chlorite ferrifère (± séricite, ± silice) accompagnée de pyrite, de pyrrhotite, de chalcopyrite, d’arsénopyrite et de sphalérite. L’indice d’altération (Fe2O3T+MgO)/(Na2O+K2O) et l’indice des métaux usuels sont les outils d’exploration les plus appropriés dans ce gisement."

"This paper is focused on the effect of modifying the SAG mill/ball mill transfer size on the energy efficiency of SABC circuits. The transfer size is considered to be a parameter which provides operators with the opportunity to improve comminution circuit performance. In this study, the Moly-Cop tools package was employed to predict the energy consumption of SAG mill and ball mill circuits under different operating conditions. An Energy Benchmarking model was adopted to calculate grinding energy efficiency. The SABC circuit at the Huckleberry mine was selected for this case study. It was observed that after increasing circuit transfer size (T80) from the existing 3.3 mm to 4.8 mm, the Benchmark Energy Factor (BEF) of the SABC circuit decreased from 4.30 to 4.05. In terms of energy consumption of the SABC circuit, 1.17 kWh/t of specific energy saving was achieved through the transfer size optimization.It was also observed that when a transfer size was selected such that both SAG mill and ball mill circuits operated at their highest energy efficient states, the entire SABC circuit was the most energy efficient. The maximum energy efficiencies of these three circuits were all approximately 25% when compared to the minimum practical energy required to carry out an equivalent comminution duty. Single-particle compression breakage testing was used to determine the minimum practical energy associated with the Huckleberry mill feed. In combination with geo-metallurgical data, this study also provides an opportunity to perform dynamic optimization of SABC circuits."

In the past decade, as a result of increasing iron loads, Canadian Electrolytic Zinc (CEZinc) has become a pioneer in understanding the critical factors that affect the roasting of concentrates with high pyrite contents as well as those factors governing the effects of high iron loads on the leaching circuit. De-bottlenecking efforts in the roaster and acid plant section of CEZinc have given rise to a better appreciation of the impact of iron on roaster productivity. High standards for impure solution quality, zinc recoveries and residue disposal have all led to an increased comprehension of the limits of the leaching circuit and the optimization potentials with respect to iron and ferrites. In this paper, the impact of iron on the roasting and leaching circuits of CEZinc will be reviewed and special emphasis will be given to some of the more recent process optimization and improvement activities.

"Gold is conventionally analyzed using fire-assay or other destructive chemical methods that impose significant sample preparation, OH&S, and skilled labour requirements. Developed over the past 15 years by the CSIRO, PhotonAssay provides a new approach. A high intensity, high-energy x-ray source is used to activate atoms of gold and other elements in bulk mineral samples. The resulting activity is counted to automatically, accurately and rapidly determine metal grade. Samples weighing 0.5–1.0 kg can be measured in a few minutes with minimal preparation. As the method is matrix-agnostic, traditionally hard-to-assay materials such as highly refractory ores, carbon pulps and copper concentrates require no special treatment. We present the status of commercial PhotonAssay systems being developed by Chrysos Corporation. The first unit with a throughput of up to 80 samples per hour is to be deployed in an Australian assay laboratory in late 2017; smaller systems suitable for providing real-time assay directly at the mine-site will be progressively rolled out from mid-2018. Performance results from extensive testing using both mine-sourced and standard reference materials are presented, demonstrating the sensitivity and accuracy of the method. Implications for replacing conventional gold assay in exploration, mining and processing operations are discussed.INTRODUCTION Accurate methods for assaying ore grade are essential throughout the exploration, mining and mineral processing value chain. The discovery and evaluation of new ore deposits, reserve and resource definition, mine operations planning, ore processing, metal accounting and product quality evaluation all rely on accurate measurement of the valuable metal content of bulk materials. The analysis of gold presents particular challenges, stemming from the very low concentrations at which commercial operations run (often part-per-million (ppm), or equivalently one gram-per-tonne levels or below), and the highly heterogeneous nature of many gold deposits. These challenges mean that any analytical method must have high sensitivity and be capable of measuring large-mass samples. The most widely used quantitative analytical method for gold is fire-assay (Hoffman, Clark and Yeager 1998). An initial ore sample typically weighing several kilograms is dried, crushed and pulverized to allow a small sub-sample (10–50 g is common) to be representatively drawn. The sub-sample is mixed with flux, litharge (lead oxide), a reducing compound and other reagents. The mixture is fired at a temperature of 1000–1200°C until molten. After cooling, the slag is removed and the lead button containing any gold present in the sample is remelted in a porous cupel. The lead is absorbed into the cupel, leaving a gold prill which is either weighed directly, or dissolved in acid and analysed via atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) or inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy (ICP or ICP/MS)."

"Solvent extraction followed by electrowinning (SXEW) is an economical option for the processing of low grade and oxidized copper ore. Phenomenological models were developed to simulate the copper solvent extraction and the electrowinning processes. The two models were linked together to make a SX/EW simulator. The simulator is used to predict the operation of the mines Gaspe pilot plant put in operation in 1996. Results confirm the potential of the simulation that would subsequently be used for student training, process optimization and to assess the performances of control strategies.INTRODUCTIONSolvent extraction followed by electrowinning (SXEW) has become in the last two decades a key process for the recovery of copper from solution obtained by leaching low grade copper ore. Several operations have been commissioned in North and South Americas in the last decade (Arbiter, 1994). In Canada, Gibraltar Mine (Scott, 1991) operates a SX plant followed by electrowinning (EW) to produce copper cathode from leached low-grade ore dumps. From 1996 to 1997 Mines Gaspe operated a pilot plant to test the economical feasibility of leaching an oxidized copper ore, followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning of copper. Despite copper SX/EW processes have the reputation of being low cost operations, plant engineers should always look at way to make the plant more efficient. Process models provide an economic platform to learn, control and ultimately optimize the operation of a plant.Several models have been independently proposed to simulate the SX process (Cadman and Hsu, 1970; Medina Gomez, 1980; Wilkinson and Ingham, 1983; Garcia et al., 1988; Aminian et al., 1997) and the EW process (Bryson, 1981; Barton and Scott, 1992; Barton and Scott, 1993). However few papers, if any, deal with the integration of the two process models into a single simulator of a SX-EW plant. This paper describes the development of an integrated simulator for the SX-EW process and shows some steady-state simulation runs of an actual SX-EW pilot plant. The paper consists of four sections. The first section shows the general layout and principles of operation of a SX-EW plant.The second section describes the SX model while the third section deals with the process model used for the copper electrowinning process. The last section shows how the two process models are linked to simulate the operation of the Gaspe pilot plant."

Carbonaceous matter (c-matter) in sulphide ores can adversely affect the process of gold recovery during cyanidation due to its ability to adsorb, or preg-rob, gold from a cyanide leach solution. This paper describes a standardized procedure for characterization of c-matter in an ore sample providing detailed information on its composition, maturity and preg-robbing capacity. The procedure utilizes the following complementary analytical techniques in conjunction with several chemical tests and assays: SEM/EDX Raman spectroscopy and TOF-SIMS. Results of the test can be used as a predictive tool to estimate the impact the c-matter will have on the gold recovery process. A comparison between predicted preg-robbing behaviour and cyanidation test results are presented.

High-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) of nickel laterite ores typically extracts 95% of the nickel and 91% of the cobalt. Impurity elements in the feed, such as iron, aluminium and chromium, also dissolve and can be detrimental to downstream processes. Rejection of impurities within the autoclave is highly desirable. Aluminium and iron hydrolyze, and then precipitate in the autoclave leaving only small amounts that are subsequently removed by precipitation in a neutralization step. The concentration of dissolved chromium can range from 200 to 2000 ppm, depending on the feed composition. Chromium in the liquid phase, usually in the hexavalent state, introduces many problems and can limit refining options. For example, chromium poisons the organics in solvent extraction making SX an expensive option. Also, hexavalent chromium must be converted to the trivalent state before it can be precipitated along with iron and aluminium. Bench-scale work confirmed that mixing small amounts of carbon-base additives, such as coke, with the autoclave feed significantly reduced chromium concentration in the autoclave discharge without any detrimental effects on paymetals recoveries and selectivity.

During bioleaching processes of sulfide minerals, the sulfide minerals act as the natural habitats for acidophiles, of which, most are autotrophic iron and sulfur oxidizing microbes. These microbes acquire energy by oxidation of sulfide minerals, and play crucial role in bioleaching processes. In the industrial bioleaching heaps, microbial community and their activity are highly related to engineering configurations, while the optimized industrial operation can help to fast dissolution of aim minerals and acid/iron balance under optimized microbial condition. Microbial community succession and activity formation, the function of microbes to mineral dissolution, the mechanisms to promotion and inhibition of sulfide minerals oxidation, and the industrial instances for microbial community regulation were reviewed. For these instances, promoted microbial activity helped to fast pyrite oxidation for sulfuric acid generation, which realized zero sulfur acid addition to the irrigation solution in the initiation of a bioleaching heaps. High microbial activity by optimized operation parameters improved Cu leaching efficiency during the heap bioleaching process. And also by inhibition of microbial activity, especially the iron oxidizing microbes, the excessive pyrite oxidation can be inhibited, which helped to the acid/iron balance during heap bioleaching. INTRODUCTION Around the world, high grade copper ore are exploited, while barely new high-grade deposits are succeeded, the copper grade of ore deposit is constantly decreasing. The increasing copper demands worldwide requests to process these low-grade ore deposits. Processing of low-grade ores are not economical by usual extraction processes. Heap leaching is a cheaper process for recovery of low-grade ores, and has been applied to extract valuable metals from sulfide minerals worldwide, such as copper, gold, uranium and nickel (Gericke et al., 2009). Heap leaching process has greatly decreased the economic grade and expanded the recoverable ore reserve worldwide (Brierley, 2008). It is usually carried out in the open environments, and could process huge amount of ore (usually in millions of tonnes in one reactor) in the heap reactor (Gericke et al., 2009). For copper sulfide, especially the secondary copper sulfides, heap (dump) bioleaching is successfully applied. Heap bioleaching process is cost saving, and sometimes can be achieved without adding chemical into heaps, by microbial fixing of the atmospheric N2 and CO2, and generating oxidant Fe3+ and sulfuric acid in heaps from oxidation of sulfide minerals. Also heap bioleaching is environment friendly by cycling use of the leaching solution, and without exhaust emission.

"A 28-year study of cross folds leads to the conclusion that the northwest-southeast folds recognized in many areas of North America are part of a regional pattern. Detailed examination of over 650 geological maps and reports of Ontario indicates that this folding can be traced across the province. Evidence is presented that this fold pattern played an important part in determining the pattern and scale of intrusion, that its recognition in the field can aid in defining stratigraphy, folding and faulting, and that it may have played an important role in channeling hydrothermal or magmatic mineralization. IntroductionThe concept of regional cross folding in Ontario is not new. W.H. Gross (1955) discussed regional cross folds in the Archean of Northwestern Ontario, and A.M. Goodwin (1961) referred to regional cross folds in the Archean of Ontario and Quebec. However, the interpretation in this paper is new.The writer saw a cross fold for the first time, underground, at Little Long Lac Gold Mines in Geraldton, Ontario, in 1951. This recalled the ""transverse folds"" on E.R. Faribault&apos;s classical maps of Nova Scotia, published by the Geological Survey around the turn of the century; M.E. Hurst&apos;s cross fold(s) at Timmins, Ontario (Figure I); and the cross folds mapped by A.W. Jolliffe in the Yellowknife area of the Northwest Territories. All these mapped cross folds had one thing in common with the fold at Little Long Lac: A northwest-southeast axial trend. Were such cross folds of purely local extent, or might they be indicative of a widespread regional fold pattern? If so, has such folding any significance for mineral exploration or potential?By 1959, based on a study of about 1000 Canadian geological maps and reports, including 291 in Ontario, the writer reached the conclusion that cross folding trending northwest-southeast is so widespread as to constitute a pattern of folding, and that such cross folding should produce changes in plunge along pre-existing greenstone fold belts."

The segment of Canadian industry based on smelting of alum in um and manufacture of consumer products is based entirely on imported alumina and bauxite. In the absence of Canadian bauxite deposits, consideration of anorthosite, a less desirable aluminous rock, is being undertaken as one alternative in maintaining assurance of supply. Anorthosites in Canada cover many thousands of square kilometres of the Precambrian Shield. Although compositions vary widely among Canadian anorthosites, many appear to exceed the specified minimum of 25% A I 20 3 in bodies containing more than the required JOO million tonnes. A lthough most Canadian anorthosites are of Precambrian age, one located in British Columbia has been identified as being Middle _Cretaceous.
