This information circular is written is response to the marry requests for information on the recovery, or reason for poor recovery, of fine gold by the amalgamation process. Checking Gold Content Experience has shown that in many cases error has been made because the true told content of a particular sample or deposit was not known. Fire assays of representative samples give accurate results and should be considered final in determining the gold content.

The Bureau of Mines believes that all coal mines are potentially gassy; for the purpose of administration in the prevention of explosions and fires, the Bureau recommends: That any coal mine wherein methane or other combustible gas can be detected in amounts as much as 0.27 of 1 percent or more by frequent systematic searches shall be classified as a gassy mine. Permissible methane-indicating detectors such as are given in I.C. 7110 or subsequent lists of Bureau approved methane-indicating detectors, or conventional methods of sampling and analysis of required accuracy may be used. The concentration referred to in the decision is percent by volume.

Provide an effective method for "soft" soldering aluminum and aluminum alloys using conventional tin-lead solder alloys and flukes. The Problem In the past, it was virtually impossible to solder aluminum and aluminum alloys using standard tin-lead soldering systems (solder and flux) due to the presence of an aluminum oxide surface film which forms instantly on aluminum and aluminum alloys when these are exposed to air. The tenacious and stable oxide film enables aluminum-base materials to maintain their bright luster. But the film also prevents the required wetting and spreading of solder on the substrate, causing the loss of adhesion between the solder and the substrate. Develop personal computer (PC) based software for analyzing and/or filtering time- and frequency-domain attributes of seismic and electromagnetic signals from geophysical surveys for the enhanced interpretation of rock masses and subsurface geologic structure. The Problem Both mining and petroleum geophysicists utilize seismic signals to characterize rock masses for delineating subsurface stratigraphy and structural conditions. However, a vast amount of information available in seismic project evaluation data often is unavailable for interpretation unless these data are enhanced. New processing technology increases the quality of these signals for analysis and interpretation. Comprehensive signal processing software is mostly written for petroleum exploration companies. Commercially available signal processing programs are often limited to a single application or are restricted for use with specific hardware, e.g., a digital oscilloscope or a mainframe computer. The programs may use computer codes that are proprietary, restrict user modification to expand capabilities, or may be hard to interface. They may have insufficient documentation for easy use and be support dependent.

At the Eighth International Conference of the Directors of Safety in Mines Research, Sartorius and Thouzea5/ presented and discussed data obtained in explosives tests made under varying conditions of humidity. These tests showed that there was less probability of explosives failure when the humidity of the testing gallery atmosphere was high. As it is to be expected that the relative humidity of mine atmospheres where permissible explosives are used will not be identical with that of the test-gallery atmospheres, the influence of atmospheric moisture upon the incendivity of permissible explosives is of the utmost importance if decreasing humidity reduces the relative safety of an explosive. Because of this and because the question has recurred frequently in discussions of gallery testing at Bruceton, Pa., it was decided to investigate the effect of humidity and ambient temperature on the ignition of firedamp by explosives, applying the small-scale gallery methods developed at the Bureau of Mines and used earlier to study the fundamental causes of such ignitions.6 7 8/

Reliably detect fires by sensing sub-micrometer-sized particles released into the air by smoldering or burning materials. Approach An extremely sensitive, ionization-type fire detector has been built that continuously draws air samples through its ionizing field and collects the ionized smoke particles downstream, thereby generating a proportional electrical output signal. (An offshoot instrument measures the size distribution and number of sub-micrometer particles in air.) How It Works Mine air to be monitored is drawn through the instrument assembly by a small pump. A pre-filter and cyclone remove dust particles and other particles larger than 0.6 micrometer diameter. The air and remaining aerosol-sized particles flow through a gastight tube which contains the detector. See diagram. Smoke and other sub-micrometer-size particles moving Into the detector, pass through an Ionizing field, and are struck by alpha particles released from radioactive source located on the axis of the tube, The alpha particles move radially outward until they strike smoke particles or molecules of air or water. When struck, a smoke particle or molecule loses an electron and becomes positively ionized.

"Soon after the armistice, an investigation was conducted by the writer on the use of liquid oxygen for explosive purposes in Germany, so far as the conditions of such investigation wore permitted at the time. The results of this inquiry were published in Technical Paper 243, entitled ""Development of Liquid Oxygen Explosives during the War.""Recently, through the courtesy of Dr. C. L. Parsons, former chief chemist of the Bureau, who was visiting Germany, and Mr. Chester L. Benson, of the American Expeditionary Forces in Germany, data was obtained from the Deutsche Oxhydric A. G., Surth near Cologne, (one of the principal manufacturers of liquid oxygen installation) concerning the number of plants which bad been installed in Germany during the period following the armistice. The hazard to health from contamination of air by a noxious gas depends not only on the potential harmful response attending exposure, but also on the warning properties, which in effect may be termed the "accompanying warning response," This warning may be manifested as an odor, taste, irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat, or perhaps headache, vertigo, or nausea. These manifestations may be painful and even slightly harmful, but to a much lesser degree than the primary injury of exposure. The warning response mitigates hazards directly in proportion to the degree of Intolerability which accompanies injurious exposure, and accordingly its absence augments hazards. This accounts for the fact that the actual health hazards from a non-odorous or non-irritating gas or vapor of comparatively low toxicity sometimes equal or exceed the hazard from a considerably more toxic substance, but one which possesses a marked odor or produces eye, nose, or throat irritation in advance of harmful exposure. When a substance lacks the properties for giving warning, it is often possible to impart them by the addition of a small amount of another substance which has an exceedingly high warning intensity. The vapors of this substance, commonly termed a "warning agent" or "tracer gas," escape and mingle with the gas or vapor which lacks warning properties and thereby apprises persons of the latter's presence. The amount of the warning agent added is that which will give adequate warning in advance of serious physiological harm from the dangerous gas or vapor.

In this Bureau of Mines investigation, production was monitored for 1 year at over 30 coalbed gas-drainage boreholes located in Alabama, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Results indicate that the quality of data gathered from such wells can be improved greatly if potential problems are anticipated and prevented in the early stages of well production. Major water-monitoring problems include solids buildup, freezing, the presence of gas in surface waterlines, and improper pumping interval settings. Such problems may be avoided by incorporating in the original well design waterline filters, sand screens, separator tanks, and systems to automatically control pumping intervals. Problems related to measurement of coalbed gas flow include large quantities of water vapor contained in the gas, especially during winter months; freezing and subsequent obstruction of flow; sudden, uncontrolled release of gas pressure; and solids buildup in metering equipment. The installation of commercially available items, such as filters, separators, and insulation, and the thoughtful application of a basic knowledge of coalbed gas reservoir characteristics will prevent most production-monitoring problems.

Native asphalt was produced in 1977 by six companies in four States. Leading States were Texas and Utah. Output declined 39% to 1,237,000 tons valued at $18,874,000. Bituminous limestone was produced by Whites Uvalde Mines and by Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co. in Uvalde County, Tex.; by Southern Stone Co. in Colbert. Ala.; and by Barton County Rock Asphalt Co. in Barton County, Mo. Gilsonite was produced by American Gilsanite Co. in Uinta County. Utah, and by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. in Weber County. Utah. The asphalt was used for streets and roads, and for other purposes.

Crude shale oil prepared by gas-combustion retorting of Colorado oil shale was hydrogenated over a cobalt molybdate catalyst at an operating pressure of 1,000 psig, temperatures of 781° and 761° F, and liquid hourly space velocities of 0.10 and 0.05 Vo/Vo/hr, respectively. The yields of total liquid products and the amounts of nitrogen and sulfur removed were comparable with those obtained at an operating pressure of 3,000 psig and a liquid hourly space velocity of 1.0 Vo/Vo/hr. Approximately 1.5 times as much gasoline was produced at the lower pressure and space velocities.

Surface mine blasting was recently investigated as a potential source of high concentrations of stray gases found in nearby residences of western Pennsylvania. In one incident carbon monoxide was detected in a home and in the other, high concentrations of carbon dioxide were found in a home. Both carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are by-products of blasting. However, other potential sources of these gases may also exist in a residential setting. In each case, gas chromatography (GC) and carbon isotopic analyses were used to define atmospheric concentrations inside the homes, and to determine the source of a stray gas. Molecular and isotopic analyses provide geochemical evidence as to the origin and source of the stray gas. This paper discusses elements of a stray gas investigation and the analyses necessary to identify the source of a stray gas.

Petroleum production was the principal component of the mineral industry, followed by cement production and some salt output. The French Central Fund for Economics Cooperation loaned $9.15 million2 to the Communauté Electrique du Benin (CEB), which served Benin and Togo, toward financing the construction of a dam on the Mono River at Nangbeto, Togo. The dam was to supply hydroelectric power to reduce the energy dependence of the two countries and to irrigate crops. Nine other international financial organizations, including the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank). the African Development Bank, the Arab Bank for African Economic Development, and the French Aid and Cooperation Fund, contributed to the estimated $140 million cost of the dam. The CEB also was to contribute to the financing. Contracts amounting to $60 million already had been awarded to West German and Canadian firms. The dam was expected to be completed in 1987.

Carbonaceous gold-bearing ores of the type that occur in north-central and northeastern Nevada were investigated by the Bureau of Mines as part of its Heavy Metals Program. Specific objectives were to identify the carbon and organic compounds that prevent adequate gold recovery from the ore by cyanidation and to develop an economical process that would overcome the detrimental effect of the carbonaceous constituents. Activated carbon and long-chain organic compounds containing sulfur and nitrogen were found in the ore. Part of the material consisted of stable gold organic complexes. A mild oxidation technique that allowed gold extraction as high as 96 percent by subsequent cyanidation was developed. A variety of oxidants was shown to be effective in improving gold recovery, including chlorine and sodium hypochlorite (NaOC1). An electrolytic oxidation process was developed that was particularly advantageous from an economic and effectiveness standpoint.

Reduce dust exposure of longwall shearer operators by keeping them upwind of the primary cutting drum. Approach Use a different coal cutting sequence by cutting from headgate-to-tailgate, making the cleanup pass from tail-gate-to-headgate. How It Works The cutting action of the shearer drum is usually the primary source of respirable dust at longwall shearer faces. Dust exposure of the shearer operator is deter-mined by his position relative to the lead drum, which is normally in the raised position taking a full sump. On long-wall faces where the cut pass is taken from tail-to-head, against the primary airflow, the shearer operators must remain at their controls, on the return-air-side of the primary dust source, to maintain proper control. A simple method to lower shearer operators' dust exposures is to extract the primary coal from head-to-tail, thus positioning the operators up-wind of the lead cutting drum. The bottom coal is then cut, and the floor cleaned by the trailing drum during the tail-to-head cleanup pass. This sequence places the primary dust source, the cutting action of the shearer drums, on the return-air side of both shearer operators, except when cutting out at the longwall headgate.

Nine dust and gaseous inhibitors of propagating coal dust-air flames (lean, stoichiometric, and rich) were evaluated in a newly developed 15-cm-id, 3.6-meter-long instrumented flame duct, under conditions such that wall quenching was virtually absent and the dust concentration was temporally and spacially uniform to within about t5 percent. Listed roughly in order of increasing efficiency, the inhibitors evaluated were rock dust (calcium carbonate), powdered oyster shells (calcium carbonate), Halon 1301 (trifluorobromomethane), Halon 1211 (difluorochlorobromomethane), sodium chloride, Super-K (potassium chloride), regular-grade fire extinguishant powder (sodium bicarbonate), Purple-K (potassium bicarbonate), and Monnex (potassium bicarbonate combined with urea). Experiments were extended to clouds containing 1 and 2 volume-percent of methane. The inhibition of lean, stoichiometric, and rich methane-air flames without coal dust was also examined in a few instances; results agreed with those obtained for coal dust-air flames.

One of the refining processes to which lubricating oils are frequently subjected effects a reduction in content of paraffin wax. The actual treatment usually involves chilling and filter pressing; the most important result accomplished from a commercial point of view is lowering of the ""cold test"" of the oil. The Bureau of Mines has recently had occasion to ascertain the effect of changes in paraffin wax content upon the viscosity of oil and has conducted a series of experiments described in the present report.Object of the present investigation:The Bureau of Mines has devised and is using a method for the analysis of crude petroleum* which includes determination of the viscosities of lubricating oil distillates. The Bureau method does not provide for preliminary removal of paraffin wax, and it has seemed advisable to determine whether this omission causes any important variation from the results that would be obtained through commercial refinery processing. It was also thought that the present tests, though limited in scope, might be of some practical value in indicating the general effect of paraffin content upon one of the most important properties of lubricating oil.Experimental procedureA five-gallon sample of Pennsylvania crude petroleum was distilled at atmospheric pressure until 50 per cent of the charge had been vaporized. Two liters of the residuum was distilled at a reduced pressure of 40 mm. (absolute) and cuts were separated that came over between the temperature limits of 250° to 275° C. (462° to 527° F.) and 275° to 300° C. (527° to 572° F.). The viscosities of these fractions were determined and they were subsequently subjected to treatment that removed successive percentages of paraffin wax. Viscosity temperature curves were determined for the oil obtained after each removal of wax.
