"Soil conditioning is one of the main factors in successful application of EPB machines in tunneling projects, which involves changing the characteristics of the ground in order to make it suitable for the tunneling process. Selection of the type of conditioner mainly depends on soil type, properties of the tunnel boring machine, and most importantly geological condition. Proper EPB tunneling and soil conditioning in ground above water table is challenging. This was encountered in Northgate Link Extension Tunneling Project in Seattle, WA. In order to improve the tunneling operation, a novel algae-based encapsulated oil was used as a conditioner and as a result the operation of the TBM was improved significantly. This paper reviews the traditional soil conditioning measures that were adopted in University Link and Northgate Link projects in Seattle, WA and compares the results with results when using the encapsulated oil additive. INTRODUCTION Soil conditioning agents are used in EPB tunneling to transform the excavated soil into a workable paste with the desired hydrological and mechanical properties. Reducing wear, power consumption, friction, adhesion, and improving the face stability and material flow are some of the benefits of using soil conditioners in EPB tunneling. Soil conditioning is performed by injecting foam, polymer, water, and bentonite to the tunnel face, excavation chamber and screw conveyor. Selection of conditioning agent mainly depends on soil type, geological condition (groundwater and soil permeability) and TBM features (injection points, open or closed cutterhead, type of foam generator, etc). The most widely used soil conditioners are foam and polymer and in some cases due to existing conditions, clay dispersion or anti-wear additives are also used (Milligan 2000, Langmaack 2000). Foam. Foam is created by dispersing air in a surfactant solution. A different combination of surfactant type and foam parameters should be used for different soil types. Laboratory tests on virgin soil should be performed to identify the best surfactant and foam parameters for the specific soil type (Langmaack 2000). The foam parameters can be described as follows:"

The Caribbean islands, with their very diverse geology, are a source of several industrial minerals both for their own domestic consumption and for export. The geology of the Greater Antilles, which comprises Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica has a Mesozoic or pre-Mesozoic basement overlain by sediments and volcanics, the latter being dominantly island arc in character. Later granitoid intrusions were emplaced. Obduction of ophiolites also occurred variously from the mid- Cretaceous to the Palaeogene. Thick accumulations of limestones surround the older strata, along with Neogene and younger sediments. The Lesser Antilles islands form an arcuate chain, mainly of volcanic rocks of calc-alkali or sub-alkaline affinity with some younger limestones and siliciclastic sediments. Trinidad and Tobago have closer similarities with the South American continent in their geology. Tobago has a metamorphic complex, juxtaposed with a volcanic-plutonic complex, and limestones. Trinidad has very thick Cretaceous to Recent exposed sedimentary sequence. The current exploitation of industrial minerals in the Caribbean is dominated by construction raw materials (mainly sand and gravel, limestone, and cement), although there is extraction of gypsum, silica sand, marble, clay (almost entirely for construction use), pumice, and natural asphalt. Salt is obtained from solar evaporation of seawater. Limestone of high purity and high brightness, gypsum, pumice, and high-density igneous rock have potential for further development of their markets, particularly ex- ports. Potential new and undeveloped industrial-mineral resources include residual and sedimentary kaolin, bentonite, zeolites, magnesite, and talc. Cuba could be a source for many industrial minerals in the future.

In regard to the paper by J.B. Gwiazda, it makes a highly technical approach to show that the .u factor used by designers of lemniscate-guided roof supports has never really been confirmed as a maximum and assumes that convergence is vertical. Also, the paper does not appear to take into account deflection of structures, which occurs when the lemniscate and base members are fully loaded to their maximum stress level, nor the front to back line of the support in relation to differential roof to floor movements caused by strata movements under pressure. It is not unusual for differential movements to be slightly diagonal to the line of the support, particularly in faulted areas and on gradient faces. The paper also does not take into account consolidation of fines immediately above and below the support. Generally speaking, any differential movement is from face to waste and under these conditions the .u of 0.3, which appears to be an international standard, has worked in practice. However, if the face end of the support is lower than the waste end, then the µ of 0.3 can be considerably increased, giving rise to the damage mentioned in the paper. The ideal design should aim for a slightly forward bias in the lemniscate guide so that the last increment of setting is toward the face, tending to close any fissures that may have developed during the support advance cycle. The support should also be fitted with positive set valves to ensure that a high setting load density is attained to minimize bed separation. As far as powered supports are concerned, convergence is irresistible and all powered supports converge at their rated yield load. A similar principle can be applied to the differential roof to floor movements to drastically reduce the very high forces that would otherwise be applied to the lemniscate structures and pins and that, in turn, are transferred to the base arrangement and floor loading. Any differential movements are usually catered for by the 0.3 µ factor or deflection of structures in the lemniscate guide arrangement and consolidation of the floor. The floor loading, due to differential movement, is in addition to the support convergence load and requires additional bearing area to avoid possible floor penetration. Some seven years ago, Fletcher Sutcliffe Wild Ltd. (FSW) introduced a lemniscate-guided shield support where the lemniscate linkage is connected to the roof bar through two horizontally converging rams to allow differential movement to take place above a given rated figure. This is a known force and can be guarded against, whereas with rigid connections the forces, as yet, are unconfirmed. By careful design, a horizontal force in excess of 6 MN (60 tons) opposes differential movements for a total ram loading of only 2.5 MN (25 tons), or 1.25 MN (12% tons) each. This principle can considerably reduce the length and weight of the support in comparison with a rigid pin-type structure; also, the yield load rating can be increased without affecting the lemniscate forces. The graph shows the tensile and compressive forces in a lemniscate linkage of a support with and without hydrostore. These forces react into both the roof beam and base members and, as can be seen from the support height to linkage load graph, a considerable reduction in these reactions is gained by the use of the FSW patented hydrostore system. Floor loading is considerably reduced under maximum µ conditions, and by allowing the roof bar to move with the strata, some degree of improvement to strata control is achieved in line with the assumptions in the paper. In practice, these movements have only been in the region of a few millimeters, which, in turn, reflects on the improvements to strata control by the addition of positive set valves.

Companies have installed powerful desktops for their personnel and instrumentation and control systems in their plants. These desktops are, in many cases, connected to a company intranet. Still, process engineers have to obtain their data manually. Engineers use process calculations from manually calculated averages from the plant; field operators collect equipment data on log sheets; and maintenance engineers collect critical information on log sheets. All of this information resides in individual machines. What are the strategic tools that will enable collaboration between them? How can operators, engineers, and managers access plant information to proactively increase their effectiveness in process troubleshooting, plant debottleneclung, aligning with business strategic and customer demand, satisfying environmental and safety regulations, developing capital projects, and implementing control strategies? A nonintrusive environment at the desktop is required to provide the process information to these workers. How can value be added to MS Windows technologies with the legacy systems at a minimum cost? There is no straight answer; however, there is a proven framework to leverage the large investments in new technologies. Objects and components are changing the way everyone relates to their computer and networks. Three examples will be described to demonstrate paradigm change. Today, process engineers can access data at the required level of detail for analysis of critical process variables at their desk or remotely. 1. Process Troubleshooting and Analysis: The engineer can develop an inferential calculation, trigger a process advisor to deter- mine the behavior of the units for the last day, and get the population of a set of batches (heats, blocks, rolls, sheets, etc). 2. Process Control and Optimization: The engineer can connect to a process simulator at steady state or a dynamic simulator of the process to evaluate new control strategies or process unit line-ups and use the process simulator as a process observer for fault diagnosis. 3. Collaboration with Accounting and Maintenance: The engineer can review reconciled data and the process mass balances, suggest maintenance cleaning or recalibration of flowmeters, and evaluate key control performance of all advanced controls.

We define a specialized mineral market as follows: Specialized markets occur where a low volume of a given mineral is used to convey a large benefit to a specific product. Sales of these value added minerals to small markets generally require a different marketing approach than bulk or commodity markets for traditional minerals. Specialized markets are differentiated by several characteristics as listed in Table 1. [Table 1-Characteristics of Specialized Markets 1. Long-term sample evaluation 2. Small volume markets 3. Highly controlled properties 4. Customized specifications 5. Technical selling effort] Many of the specialized markets require long term evaluations before sales can be made. This can vary greatly depending on the type of industry and ultimate end-use of the final product. In some cases, complete evaluations may take from several weeks to years. Length of sample evaluation has no relationship to size of market. That is, the total market may be quite small or fairly large (e.g. from a few hundred pounds to a few million pounds). Uniformity of value added minerals from lot to lot is an extremely important characteristic for these markets. Variations that are of no consequence to one industry (or application) cannot be tolerated in another. This has led to customized specifications and test procedures for specific markets and applications. Because of the greater uniformity and customized specifications, the need for greater technical selling effort is required. This is particularly true in the initial developmental phases and contacts as well as in maintaining the account after the initial order. A small entrepreneurial organization can be used to advantage to achieve goals of sales and profit to these types of markets. The large commodity or bulk producer's sales and marketing organizations are not ordinarily equipped to give the necessary service or technical assistance to the specialized markets. The organization usually required for this type of marketing is given in Table 2. [Table 2- Specialized Marketing Organization Requirements 1. Flexible approach to technical and marketing problems 2. Technically competent management] In developing specialized markets, a flexible approach to both technical and marketing problems is necessary in understanding the needs and requirements of the industry and the applications involved. This flexibility is also helpful in adapting existing products to new market areas. Having knowledge of a range of industries as broad as possible can be very helpful. It often happens that a product developed in one area or industry can lead to its application in a different area with excellent results. Laboratory assistance for a wide range of tests and test procedures is an important asset in any development program for specialized markets. Laboratories can also assist in competitive evaluations. Marketing expertise and a management with some degree of technical understanding are necessary in to assign proper cost/ benefit ratios to a proposed new product or application of existing products. This is important since the total market volume can be small and the time required for initial contact to first sale can often be lengthy. Also, management's technical and marketing expertise is required in evaluating all possible options that can be considered viable when an application is presented. Once an organization of this type is in place, it is then possible to determine the needs of the marketplace, including when various minerals might have to be customized to fill those needs. There are generally two methods of marketing, as noted in Table 3. [Table 3- Method of Marketing 1. Product Driven -Develop a product with certain desirable properties and try to find a market to utilize those properties. 2. Market Driven -Know market well enough that when a need arises, it is possible to identify a product that will satisfy the need.] These approaches are not mutually exclusive and can be used at the same time. Marketing a value added mineral generally requires the "market driven" approach. Hence, the importance of a knowledgeable management as outlined above. To determine where needs and opportunities exist, several approaches can be used. Table4 lists some of the methods employed.

This paper will introduce and discuss a range of techniques that utilise new developments in Computer Graphics (CG) and Virtual Reality (VR) for the investigation of incidents and accidents in mining environments. The future of mining safety may not be totally led by the demands of the mine operators, but sometimes by the academics, commercial software developers and legal pioneers who generate new ideas and products and set admissibility precedents which may change the way certain traditional investigative operations are performed. In any accident investigation the outcome from the investigating team is often a complex affair and the results of the investigation are often reported in large, convoluted documents. Computer-generated forensic reconstructions allow investigators to present accident scenarios in an accessible and easily understood, visual manner. Surveys in the US have also shown that people have increased recall of computer-generated images over many other forms of evidence. The AIMS Research Unit in the UK have been pioneering the use of Computer Graphics (CG) and Virtual Reality (VR) technology for both industrial and road traffic accident reconstruction. This paper and accompanying presentation will contain examples of forensic reconstructions developed by the authors that explain some of the methodologies used to ensure admissibility of this type of digital evidence. The paper will contain a number of case studies based on UK and International industrial accidents. The paper will focus on how AIMS Research is extending the capabilities of the accident reconstructions created to take advantage of the latest developments in VR technology. As digital technology makes its impact within professional and commercial fields, computer generated forensic reconstructions will form important admissible evidence in the courtrooms of the future. The technology will also make a great impact in the way we train our workforces, with highly visual three-dimensional (3D) interactive training tools becoming the norm. Acceptance by the public, courts and workforce is an important issue, and implementation strategies must be considered carefully.

The quantum of coal fines below 6 mm in run-of-mine (ROM) coal has been increasing due to progressive mechanization of mining methods which has created a substantial incentive, worldwide, to develop suitable fine coal beneficiation techniques. The majority of the efforts have been directed toward reduction in ash/sulfur contents in clean coal. The beneficiation techniques may be broadly grouped as those based on specific gravity and surface property. The processes, which use heavy medium cyclone, water-only cyclone, concentrating tables, and spirals, belong to the former group while the latter group encompasses froth flotation, column flotation, oleo- flotation, and oil agglomeration. In almost all the gravity based techniques, it has been noted that a classification step prior to beneficiation is essential for effective treatment. In general, the effect of design and process variables on the performance of these units and also the quantification of the processes have been the main areas of research and development. In froth flotation, efforts throughout the world have been mainly to understand the effect of variables and to optimize the process. Quantification of the process has been attempted through kinetic studies and mathematical modeling. The efforts have led to the development of new reagents, machine designs, and flowsheets for a specified objective. The attempts so far with the column flotation and oleoflotation processes have indicated a great potential. Extensive R&D efforts are in progress to understand as well as to commercialize the processes. The efforts in the oil agglomeration process have been toward substantiating the inherent merits of the process by developing cheaper bridging liquids and technology to recover and reuse the oil to make the process commercially viable. Modeling of the process has also been attempted to predict the yield and size distribution of the agglomerates. This paper reviews and summarizes the recent developments in the science and technology of fine coal beneficiation processes. The current trends in R%D efforts for these processes are also highlighted.

This paper describes two new gas diagnostic techniques which have been used successfully to determine: 1) the combustion status of underground mines which have been sealed due to fire (Littol1 Ratio); and 2) the location of fires in abandoned, underground mines or waste banks (Kim Ratio). The Litton Ratio makes use of the rate of change of CO, calculated on both an air-free and methane-free basis, from mine gas samples and compares these values with those expected from a normal, combustion-free environment. The Kim Ratio uses the concentrations of total hydrocarbons, C2 ?C5, less the methane, to arrive at ratio values which increase as combustion intensity increases. The details of these two new techniques, their application to real situations, and their limitations will be discussed.

"Enhanced heap leaching - Part 1: Insights" (Orr, 2002), different flow and transport phenomena that could significantly reduce leaching recovery were investigated. The combination of such understanding with advanced flow and transport modeling establishes the link between cause and effect, thereby, directing operators to optimal design and construction of new heaps. Modeling of flow and transport in heaps could also point to a unique change in application method or rate that would maximize leaching enhancement of an existing heap under existing situation and leaching history. The use of such a model is cost effective in that it can simulate multiple scenarios of alternative leaching enhancement methods. By simulating a large number of irrigation scenarios, such a model can point to the optimal and/or the most promising alternatives for a particular heap. The authors' simulations concentrate on the effects of changes in application rates and heap design on changes in flow paths and enhanced leaching recovery. Based on such simulations, an intelligent control agent, such as Multiple Resolution Decision-Support System (MRDS) (Meystel and Albus, 2002), could build a new representation of the complex heap-leaching system. And, by learning from historical data and current information, it could provide optimal management of heap leaching and heap decommissioning.

The Henderson mine is an underground panel-caving molybdenum mine located in the mountains of central Colorado. All development and primary production operations are performed using diesel-powered, rubber-tired mobile equipment. The growth in manpower and equipment was rapid in the five years following the July 1976 start-up, reaching about 250 machines and 2000 people to produce 9 Mt/a (10 million stpy) of ore. However, due to dramatic improvements in productivity, production is currently at a rate of 8.1 Mt/a (9 million stpy) with about 570 people and a much smaller equipment fleet. The mine's high degree of mechanization and accompanying maintenance costs have focused increased attention on the maintenance function as a cost center with potential for improvement. To realize some of that potential, several approaches to equipment maintenance have been adopted. None of these stand alone effectively, though, and their success relies on their working together in the overall program. The approaches that characterize the equipment mainte¬nance philosophy at Henderson are described here. Preventive maintenance The value of preventive maintenance as an alternative to breakdown or emergency repair is widely accepted in industry. When production began in 1976, few people at Henderson had experience maintaining diesel-powered, rubber-tired equipment. Other company operations such as its previous Urad operation and the Climax molybdenum mine near Leadville, CO used rail and Blusher technology. A maintenance consultant was hired to establish a formal preventive mainte¬nance program. The initial program contained four different preventive maintenance services, "A," "B," "C," and "D." Each was keyed to a different operating interval. • "A" service was the most frequent. It was a quick, general inspection and greasing of all fittings. •"B" service added a more detailed inspection. • "C" service included changing all filters and most fluids, such as engine oil. • "D" service was originally designed as a comprehensive inspection and testing of major component systems over a period of 24 hours during which the equipment was removed from operation. It was believed that most problems uncovered by the inspection could be reported and scheduled for repair at some later date, with only critical repairs being done during the service. In addition to these scheduled preventive maintenance services, a schedlle of minor and major rebuilds at intervals of 2500 to 5000 hours was established.

INTRODUCTION The finding or acquisition of ore bodies containing 200,000 opt gold and greater is becoming more difficult. There are more investors and small heap leach operators who have or can raise the capital to make the investments in the large ore bodies. Echo Bay Mines' approach has been to regionally develop small ore bodies, two or three in the same geographic location, which when considered together contain over 200,000 opt gold. CONCEPT The "world class" ore body syndrome, which many large gold producing companies maintain, can restrict company growth if the finding or acquisition of these large ore bodies is not forthcoming. Another approach has been taken by Echo Bay Mines. The concept is to regionally develop two or three small ore bodies suitable for processing with portable equipment. The systematic scheduling of mining, processing with a single flexible processing plant using the same management/ operator team can reduce your overall investment. The initial selection of mining and crushing equipment suitable for sun11 open pit operations is essential. A very viable option in the mining sequence is to use contract mining/crushing/screening/agglomerating and stacking. This option also lowers your initial capital investment and increases the flexibility in mining as you move from one mining operation to another. LOCATION AND SEQUENCING One single small ore body of itself is not attractive enough for the large producer. The recovery of the initial capital investment, although very rapid, does not make a viable project. The only alternative is to find two or more small ore bodies close enough geographically to each other so that the same management/operator team can be used to run the operations as each is put into operation. Echo Bay Mines has regionally located several ore bodies ranging in recoverable ounces up to 100,000 oz. These small separate ore bodies, located within a 30-mile radius of each other, for planning purposes have been considered as one single ore body. The first small ore body has the initial burden to recover the capital invested in the office, laboratory, power plant and processing plant. Other capital investments such as water supply, access and haul road, fencing, septic system, pads and ponds are reoccurring at each mine site. The first small ore body must recover the initial capital investment in the movable structures as well as the reoccurring capital investment in the fixed structures very rapidly. A total capital recovery time of 6 to 9 months should be used as an economic decision point for both choosing which small ore body should be processed first, and what the plant design capability should be. The sequencing of the small mines is very critical. All the fixed structures mentioned above must be installed at the second mine site before the first mine has been mined out. The ideal sequencing will allow for only one month between shutdown of the first small mine and production from the second. SPECIFIC OPERATION Echo Bay Mines has completed the construction of the Illipah Mine located in White Pine County, Nevada, with this small mine sequence approach. The Illipah Mine is a 40,000 ounce recoverable gold ore body. This ore body met all the necessary requirements. A generic task summary for design and implementation of hydrogeology programs at open-pit mine operations is presented as a guideline for management. Rigorous assessment of the local and regional hydrogeologic system is necessary to plan dewatering activities and to address environmental concerns. Dewatering activities include calculation of dewatering requirements, design of dewatering systems and evaluation of dewatering-water disposal areas. Environmental concerns include calculation of dewatering and water-disposal impacts, mitigation of soil and ground-water contamination and acquisition of water rights. Three-dimensional numerical models are commonly used to support these analyses. A thoroughly developed hydrogeology program provides an interactive basis for dewatering feasibility decisions and for support of environmental permits and regulatory compliance.

Salicylaldehyde, a chelating agent for tin, has been found to function as a collector for the flotation of cassiterite. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance studies clearly show that salicylaldehyde can form a chelate compound in bulk and at the surface. Results are also given for the flotation of a tin ore with this reagent.

For over 100 years mine hoists have been used in Cape Breton Coal mines which are situated on the eastern coast of Canada. Most of the coal seams have been inclined and as the mine advanced, longer lengths of haul were required. This paper describes the successful operation of slope hoists with rope capacities of up to 6100 m (20,000 ft.) at Cape Breton Development Corporation. A general description of the hoists is given. The braking systems, controllers and man riding cars used are discussed. The operational problems of using such long lengths of rope are described.

Performance of belt conveyors, service life of belts and mechanical elements can be radically improved if the automatic adjustment of the belt speed movement is made in such a way, that the unit load over the conveyor length be constant and close to the rated one under random input freight traffic. Such an adjustment is possible when the system of a controllable thyristor electric drive on the basis of induction squirrel cage motor is used. Computer-aided adjustment of the belt conveyor movement is effected via bicontour digital control of the main drive in order to redistribute loads when the loading of conveyor and contour of the control of tension drive are changed. The system envisages control and condition monitoring of the conveyor electromechanical system, as well as metering of electrical power and the amount of conveyor freight. The results of the simulation of speed control of the conveyor belt are given in the report. Mathematical model of the conveyor electromechanical system describes the movement of the belt with cargo and the tension drive. The input cargo traffic is assumed as stationary ergidic random process with the assigned characteristics. The solution of the problem of the synthesis of a closed-loop control system, the structure and parameters of adjustment, the conditions of asymptotic stability of the control back-up system and the condition of minimization of mean square error of shadowing are also given in the report. Microprocessor controller is used to realize the function of the adjustment unit. Under this control system standard mode of conveyor operation, different modes of start-up, operating mode with decreased speed when transporting people, service and emergency braking of a conveyor and some other modes are realized. The digital model of a conveyor as an instrument for decision making in case of emergency is used in those modes. MASTER TEXT Long-standing practice of belt conveyor operation in mines of Russia has proved their inefficient use with 40-70% capacity and 20-25% availability factor. It is associated with unreasonable power intensity and reduction of service life of mechanical components, and as a result, with the growth of total transportation costs. Low efficiency of conveyor application can be explained by the extremely irregular distribution of conveyor freight traffic. Usually, the width of a conveyor belt is identified in accordance with the possible maximum traffic value, engine power capacity for long-term operation under rated loads. However, actually a conveyor often runs without any load and its average load in most cases is lower than the rated one. The problem can be eliminated by way of the adjustment of the operational mode of a conveyor according to an actual input freight traffic via belt speed control providing for the conveyor regular linear load which is nearly equivalent to the rated one. This paper will explore the technology behind and applications of smart motor control centers (MCCs) being used today in mineral processing facilities. The two technologies to be discussed are solid-state motor controllers that can be installed in MCCs and the complementary digital communication networks that can transmit operational parameters of the solid-state devices to the supervisory system. The toughness and reliability of solid-state technologies have led to a dramatic increase in their usage throughout the mining industry. Products such as solid-state motor protectors, controllers, and variable frequency drives have demonstrated greater flexibility and performance in a variety of applications than their electromechanical and mechanical counterparts. The three key trends apparent in the solid-state devices are: 1. A shift to smaller, smarter, more integrated devices, which allows a single solid-state device to serve the purpose of multiple electromechanical devices but in a much smaller form factor. 2. Distribution of control logic in motor control devices rather than conveyed through a hard wired connection to a central automation system. 3. Embedded network communication that allows supervisory systems to have an expanded view into critical loads and sensors. In applications, the use of smart actuators and sensors with integral local intelligence and communication allow a supervisory controller to send high level commands and let the smart device coordinate its own work The ability of smart field devices to return noncontrolled, nonpoled information opens a whole array of new capabilities for preventive maintenance and diagnostics and forms the basis for an effective motor management program. The smart motor control devices this paper will explore are the smart motor protectors (SMP), smart motor controllers (SMC), and variable frequency drives (VFD).

Introduction My first contact with industrial milling was during the time I worked in the electricity generating industry in the United Kingdom. In visits to power stations to investigate either deposits in the boiler furnaces or polluting deposits settling around the stacks. I had to check the performance of the vertical coal pulverizers, since poor pulverization aggravated both problems. Naturally, then, when I came to the USA in 1957 to take a PhD in fuel technology at Penn State, I was put to work to review the science of coal pulverization. After this reviewing, I was completely confused. On one hand, there was a well-developed understanding of stress-strain equations, and a rap- idly developing knowledge of how stressed, brittle solids fractured, based on the Griffith crack theory. On the other hand, reading in the grinding literature gave me: • Kick's Law, which was clearly not correct in the light of modern fracture theory; • Rittinger's Law, which was also clearly not correct; • Bond's Third Law of Comminution, which was claimed to have something to do with the Griffith crack theory, but where the connection between the two was made by intuitive pseudo- scientific reasoning I could not accept; • the choice of mill motor power for the most common type of coal mill, the Raymond pulverizer, was calculated from the fan power required to move air through the mill. Although I could accept the empirical connection between the two, it made no sense from the point of view of fracture energy. Even today, most books or review chapters on size reduction start from these laws. incorrect statements abound in the literature, such as “the Hardgrove Index is based on Rittinger's Law," which it is not, "The Bond theory states that work input is proportional to new crack tip length produced in particle breakage," which is not true, etc. My own test work showed that these "laws" did not fit the data for grinding of coal. At about this time, Epstein (1 948) and Broadbent and Callcott (1 956), following the original work by R.L. Brown (1941) at the British Coal Utilization Research Association, proposed describing breakage as a series of fracture stages. I took their concepts and developed the basic differential equation for a batch grinding process continuous in time, analogous to a batch chemical reactor. Robin Gardner then joined the project and did his PhD on treating batch grinding in the same way as a batch chemical reactor. He found that the basic equation had already been partially derived by Sedlatschek and Bass (1 953) in Germany. We confirmed experimentally the validity of the equations for describing batch grinding (1 962) and formulated the equation describing steady-state continuous grinding in a fully-mixed mill. At about the time this work was published, Gaudin and Meloy (1962) and Filippov (1961) independently published essentially the same equations, but without experimental proof of the validity of the concepts. I will give a brief overview of what these beginnings had led to in the design of mills for size and power, and show some of the results of this more detailed understanding of grinding processes. Concepts of Fracture Mills such as tumbling ball, rod, pebble and autogenous mills and vertical mills such as the Raymond, and E-type apply compressive stress to lumps or particles relatively slowly. Compressive stress applied to a particle of an elastic brittle solid imparts overall strain energy to the solid and produces local regions of tensile stress, (Fig. 1) (Berenbaum and Brodie, 1959). Irwin (1949) showed from solution of the stress-strain solutions that a small hole in a region of tensile stress reduces stress concentration at the hole, that is, the tensile stress at the tip of a crack or flaw in a solid is much higher than the general tensile stress in the region. The longer the crack, the higher the stress concentration. Griffith (1920) hypothesized that when the regional tensile stress is large enough, then the chemical bonds at a preexisting crack tip are stretched to breaking point, as illustrated in Fig. 2. When the bonds break, the crack becomes longer, the tensile stress concentration increases, the situation is unstable and a crack opens up (propagates) a surface of tensile stress, creating its own tensile stress at the leading edge. Stored strain energy is converted to the kinetic energy of the moving stress field, which is analogous to sound propagation through the solid, so the crack tip accelerates to velocities approaching those of sound. The moving crack will pass through regions that were previously under regional compressive stress.
