In late 1995 at the Randol symposium in Squaw Valley, I gave a paper which described the Itos project flowsheet. At that time, project construction was nearly completed and stmtup was close. This paper describes the ltos operation since then. To summa­rize things, startup occurred partially in late 1995 with full start­up of all components in about mid 1996. From then until now, April 1998, the plant has been running at partial capacity and has yet to achieve full production rates.

P.T. Kellan Equatorial Mining (KEM) is an Indonesian incorporated company owned 90% by CRA Limited of Australia and 10% by PT. Harita Jayaraya of Indonesia. The Kelian gold mine first commenced production in January 1992 and has produced in excess of 21 tonne of gold (675,000 oz) in its first 18 months of operation. The operation is a large tonnage low grade deposit that accepts a low gold recovery by industry standards due to the partially refractory nature of the orebody.

This paper describes the driving of a 1421 m long by 2.74 m diameter sewer tunnel in postglacial soils of the Menomonee River Valley in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. An earth pressure balance machine was used for excavation and to install a "one pass" pre-cast concrete gasketed segmental liner. Also discussed is the use of ground freezing to stabilize the ground for the start of tunneling operations and modifications made to two structures to accommodate final tie-ins for the sewer tunnel.

The characteristics of frothers can often be determined by the proper selection of various chemical groups. There are three basic groups utilized in the application of frothers. These are alcohols, polyglycol ethers, and polyglycols. Some of the chemical groups are separated in subgroups. Each chemical group provides particular characteristics which affect load support, bubble diameter, water retention, air dispersion, and kinetics of froth formation. These chemical groups may be preblended in various percentages to optimize frother characteristics for a particular ore deposit.

As originally conceived, this paper was to address the costs of environmental compliance, focus on environmental impact statements, and describe how those costs impact mining projects. The intent was to do wide ranging mathematical analyses to demonstrate the varying impacts on mining projects depending on their size, timing, return on investment and other salient project features. The initial portion of the numerical analysis necessary to this purpose was performed. The results showed a pattern of impacts familiar to the mining industry:

Quimica del Rey, SA, a subsidiary of Industrias Peñoles, SA de CV, produces sodium sulfate from brines extracted from a playa of Laguna del Rey, located in the State of Coahuila in northern Mexico. The spent brine is used as raw material for the production of magnesium oxide. The brine, which contains ions of sodium, magnesium, sulfate, and chlorine, occurs filling intercrystalline voids of a lenticular evaporite deposit whose main constituents are glauberite (sodium-calcium sulfate) and blöedite (sodium-magnesium sulfate).

Based on the concept of slope-stability analysis, a formula for determining an important parameter required in the mathematical model for the prediction of mining subsidence in hilly terrain is proposed. The slope geometry and the physical and mechanical properties of the soil at the surface of the natural slope can all be considered in the formula. Incorporation of this new formula into an existing mathematical model provides an integrated approach for the study of ground movement in hilly regions.

This study investigated the use of a 7.6-cm inside diameter, 344.2-cm-tall horizontally baffled column to reduce the ash content of a low-sulfur bituminous coal. Tests were carried out to determine how the baffled column responded to changes in feed rate, reagent dosage and feed quality. The tests were also carried out to compare the columns performance to a conventional column installation in an operating plant. In this paper, the results of this investigation are reviewed and discussed.

The potential of controlling heavy metal ions in effluents from discontinued mining operations and waste rock piles has been investigated. A fresh water green alga, Cyanidium caldarium, was found to have the potential to remove Cut' from solutions while exhibiting high tolerance to acid conditions which are commonly encountered in copper-nickel mine drainage. The process has the potential for application as a low maintenance metal decontamination system. The growth requirements and copper removal characteristics of this microorganism are described.

We developed a statistically based strategy for sampling the surficial material of mine-waste dumps for use in screening and prioritizing historic dumps on abandoned mine lands. This sampling strategy entails the collection of a representative composite sample from individual dumps and allows for regional or watershed-based assessments. One 30-inment dump-composite sample collected using this sampling strategy contains as much information, relative to average value, as 30 individual grab samples at 1/30 of the analytical cost.

Chemical and structural changes occurring during the roasting of refractory gold ores were investigated. Effect of temperature on oxidation behavior of ores was analyzed using TGA, DTA and X-ray diffraction methods. The experimental results showed that the carbon in the ore has to be oxidized to a minimum value before any appreciable oxidation of sulfur occurs. Oxidation rates as a function of temperature were calculated. Optimum conditions under which a successful roasting of the refractory gold ores can be obtained are discussed.

The concept of a reusable underground nuclear test facility, named HEDEF, has been under study for some time. This rock chamber would have to be engineered to sustain the repeated mechanical and thermal shocks of internal explosions. In this paper, we summarize preconceptual studies performed in support of HEDEF, including -simple dynamic calculations for internally loaded tunnels, -outline of proof-of-concept tests of proposed reinforcement, - and initial dynamic testing of reinforcement components in an underground high explosive (HE) test.

The purpose of this section is to demonstrate the development of a method that we believe can be used for simulating and predicting mine water inflow. It will also show how important it is for personnel who model mine water inflow to have considerable experience with this subject, and with the conversion of hydrogeologic frameworks to conceptual models. Several of the models described previously are said to be three dimensional. However, closer examination reveals that there is considerable limitation in the variation possible in the third dimension. A true three-dimensional analysis would require a very large program. Therefore, it seems more reasonable to develop a procedure by which information from a two-dimensional model can be used for analysis of a three-dimensional problem. For a vertical mine shaft this is relatively easy because most two-dimensional models have an option for axisymmetric flow. If it can be assumed that axisymmetry exists about the centerline of the shaft it can be modeled easily as has been illustrated previously. For a horizontal drift or tunnel the analysis is not nearly as straightforward. However, the flow can be divided into two parts as indicated in Fig. 59. Part 1 considers the flow into the side of the drift while part 2 considers the flow into the end of the drift. To calculate the flow rate into the entire drift from the unsteady flow into a unit length the instantaneous flow per unit length may be integrated over the total length of the shaft. This procedure is shown in Fig. 60. The radial flow through any incremental length of the shaft is q. The total flow rate, Q, into the drift at any particular time is given by: The discharge q is a function of the time during which a particular segment has been draining that is dependent on the location x. In other words, a location at x = 0 has been draining during the entire time of expansion while a segment at x = L has only started to drain. Therefore, the time of draining at any point, x, is given by: [ ] where t' is the time over which the mine has been expanded. To determine the relationship between q and t it is necessary to refer to Polubarinova- Kochina (1962, pp. 566-569) and the equation given for the unsteady flow problem. A charge of the Research Council of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc. (SME) is to ?? identify longer term research ideas/needs, that in the perception of the SME Research Council, could represent significant technology breakthroughs ?? (SME, n.d.). In 2008, the Council decided that instead of unilaterally developing a list of top priorities, it would involve the entire membership of SME in identifying the top priorities. Additionally, it decided to keep the list short. This paper describes the process and results from that exercise.

There are differences in design aspects between steel and rubber linings in grinding mills. This paper describes the basic design rules for rubber liners for different grinding applications. When converting a mill from steel to rubber liners, the design must be changed from such familiar steel liner shapes as wedge bars and plates, wave liners, ship-lap, etc. to take advantage of the characteristics of rubber. Very little of the knowledge of the wear properties of steel can be used for the design of rubber mill liners.

In December of 1992, the City of New York, Department of Environmental Protection, solicited bids for Contract 543B. The low bidder was a joint venture of Schiavone Construction Co., Inc. and the J. F. Shea Co., Inc. When completed, the project provides a 4.88 meter diameter water tunnel 8,840 meters long. This paper presents a case history of the equipment and construction methods utilized for this, the first portion of the New York City Water Tunnel constructed by use of a tunnel boring machine.

In the operation of this mobile-modular system, inexpensive fiberglass charcoal columns are loaded with gold at strategically-located adsorption stations. The loaded columns are then shipped to a centralized stripping facility. After stripping, the columns are returned to the adsorption station. The advantages of this system are as follows: •Easy scale up from pilot plant to full production. •Low capital and operational costs. •Gold production quickly reacts to changes in ore production. •The solution circuits are simple and easy to maintain. •Charcoal damage is greatly reduced.

A control strategy is proposed to meet the following specifications of flotation control: minimize the variations of concentrate and tails grades and recovery while limiting the amplitude of variations of the manipulated variables. The strategy consists of determining future control actions which optimize a performance criterion over a limited time horizon. The desired dynamic behaviour of the controlled flotation plant is specified using reference models. The strategy is tested on a 2-computer plant simulator working in an environment which emulates the industrial conditions.

On reflection of certain overall circumstances which have pervaded the gold mining industry, it appears useful to point out some specifics which the writer hopes will improve the potential for success in the application of hydraulic dredges to gold mining activity. I will, prior to entering into that discussion, comment briefly on rule of thumb for the application of the three types of equipment. The three are bucket line, bucket wheel and drag line dredges. From a standpoint of high volume movement over a short distance, between 50 and 300 feet, the drag line dredge is historically the most cost effective type of machine to be utilized if bulk excavation is the single driving consideration. It is typical for this sort of equipment to operate in the 10 to 30 cents per cubic yard range, however, cost of operation is not the sole consideration. Typically the drag line mixes and remixes the material which it excavates. In the event that gold recovery is the object of the exercise, a strong potential for loss of the valued mineral exists. Additionally, drag lines do a poor job of bottom cleaning, particularly if there is a ridged or creviced bottom which must be cleaned and in some cases partially removed to assure recovery of the highest percent of valuable ore. The bucket line dredge has, until recently, been considered an extremely cost effective device. This is presentation of a model which simplifies application of project management in control of the construction procedure of industrial units (mines, power stations etc). The model is made for further referrence of investors. The most demanding problem in large units is to find the best way of locating all activities within a network. The model uses term "line" (which refers to a construction unit) for a serie of activities which are to be sequentially executed (up to 1000 lines, each with 10-20 activities). The lines are coded in advance. Each line is described by a competent expert. Team of experts provide liason between lines on the basis of computer drawings. The method proved to be extremely effective. In order to provide smooth monitoring at all management levels, graphic documentation is given at 4 levels. The initial level is the third one, made based on input data (more than lo listings per one drawing). By condensation of activities along one line, another level is obtainable. Grouping of lines gives the first level (1-2 listing) for the highest management level. More detailed information is given for a limited (shorter) period at the forth level for the purposes of operational management. Each activity has three phases: prior to contracting, post contracting and accomplishment. All phases are presented at all levels, which enables investor to be continually well informed about construction advancement. Model is written in FORTRAN language. Programs comprise: maintenance of data base, calculation of time and costs and elaboration of graphic and other documentation.
