This paper describes the Bureau of Mines experimental test program which evaluated the effectiveness of using high explosives to enhance orebody permeability. To determine the effect of stress on the fracture network generated by blasting, fifteen single-hole laboratory tests in granite blocks up to .067 m3 (2.4 ft3) in size were blasted using .12 to .20m (4.8 to 8.0 in) of 1.6xl0-3-, 3.2xl0-3-, or 6.5xl0-3-kg (25-, 50-, or 100-grain) detonating cord. In situ stresses were simulated using polyaxial load cells to apply uniform stresses of 1.72xl06 to 1.76xl07 Pa (250 to 2550 psi). All of the blocks were sawed to expose the blast-induced fracture patterns for analysis.

Using an exhaustive data set of Walker Lake, four different kriging techniques plus the inverse distance squared weighting were compared with regards to each one's performance in accurately estimating the block grades. The North-West quadrant of the Walker Lake data area was used because of its extreme variability of values and its distinct contour of the values. There were 1900 exhaustive data points in the selected area from which a total of 121 samples were drawn following the sampling strategy given in Isaaks and Srivastava (1989). The average of 5 x 5 exhaustive data points was treated as the true, known block grade. A total of 780 blocks, each block corresponding to the average of 5x5 exhaustive data points, were then estimated using the 121 sample points. The resulting estimates were then compared with the true known values to determine each technique's prediction performance. For this particular portion of the Walker Lake and for the given sampling strategies used, the obtained results for the global estimation are mixed. For the variable U which is much more variable, the rankings are; 1) Jackknife Kriging (JK), 2) Indicator Kriging (IK), 3) Inverse Distance Square weighting (IDS), 4) Ordinary Kriging (OK), and 5) Log-Jackknife Kriging (LJK). For the variable V, the results are; 1) OK, 2) IK, 3) JK, 4) LJK, and 5) IDS. When we apply several cutoff grades to the estimates to determine the conditional mean grades and tonnage, the above rankings generally get shifted around. Two exceptions to these cases are; a) UK for U and b) IDS for V. These two consistently ranked at the bottom.

Diasporic bauxite from the Mugla-Milas region was mechanically activated in a planetary mill for different activation times and the structural changes were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and specific surface area analysis (BET ? Burnauer, Emmett and Teller). Non-activated and activated bauxite samples were leached directly in alkaline (Na2O) solution at atmospheric conditions and the activation procedure led to the amorphization and structural disordering of the diasporic bauxite structure, which increased the dissolution efficiency. Effects of milling speed, liquid/bauxite ratio and leaching time on alumina extraction in direct alkaline leaching of diasporic bauxite were also studied. Froth flotation technique is an effective and efficient process for recovering of ultra-fine (minus 74 pm) clean coal. Economical dewatering of an ultra-fine clean coal product to a 20 percent level moisture will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced cleaning processes. This study is a step in the Department of Energy's program to show that ultra-clean coal could be effectively dewatered to 20 percent or lower moisture using either conventional or advanced dewatering techniques. The main focus of the pilot plant study was on proof-of-concept testing of a dewatering technique for a fine clean coal product. The coal industry is reluctant to use the advanced fine coal recovery technology due to the non-availability of an economical dewatering process.

The White Pine Mine is situated in the southwestern portion of the Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan approximately 6 miles south of Lake Superior (Fig. 1). It is east of the Porcupine Mountains in Ontonagon County. The ore deposit is about 70 miles southwest of the famous native copper deposits of the "Copper Country" lying northeast of Houghton. Geological conditions are different at every mine and create a special set of problems in dilution control. This paper is largely intended to describe the techniques applied in mine dilution control (grade control) at White Pine, and present results of the program. For necessary background information major geologic characteristics of the deposit, particularly those that exert control over the distribution of ore, are briefly discussed. Mining methods are described in considerable detail since applied grade control techniques are adapted to these.

Mine ventilation is one of the most important aspects of mining operations in underground mines. It is critical to maintain and deliver required fresh air to the active areas to reduce the risk of overexposure to hazardous contaminants or explosive atmospheres. An unexpected or unknown event such as roof collapse, unexpected mine door closure/opening, a fire/explosion, or fan malfunction could adversely alter the airflow distribution within the mine ventilation network that could lead to a hazardous underground environment. Knowing the occurrence and location of such an incident is of critical importance. In this study, the authors developed a novel methodology to assist mine operators in quickly identifying the location of any abnormal airflow change within the network using the airflow changes at monitored airways. The concept is based on a direct derivative method developed by the authors. This paper provides the details of the developed method as well as numerical verification examples. The application of this method can benefit mine operators and safety personnel in making better decisions during a mine emergency response operation to mitigate hazardous conditions arising from an unexpected airflow disturbance

The solution of the dynamic population balance model (PBM) of a closed grinding network consisting of a mill, sump, and cyclone is problematic. The fact that the dynamic PBM model equation solution to the Inverse Problem for grinding systems is degenerate or underspecified is demonstrated. Two numerical solution approaches to the Inverse Problem are used. These are: 1) providing additional constraints on breakage selection functions or 2) performing the Arbiter-Bhrany (or other) normalization of the selection functions. Actual experimental anthracite batch grinding data is used to demonstrate the non-unique functionality of the batch dynamic mill selection and breakage functions for a real physical system. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained non-linear equations is used to solve the batch dynamic PBM grinding equations to obtain the grinding selection and breakage rate functions. Different solutions to the same PBM transport equations are provided. The mill, sump and hydrocyclone were modeled as a CSTR operating at various retention times. Batch dynamic PBM data was used to provide the mill kinetic and breakage selection function data. Two different solutions were obtained depending on the numerical solution approach. The severity of the non-uniqueness problem for dynamic grinding is demonstrated. Each solution approach to a dynamic PBM with transport, while giving the same prediction for a single batch grinding time, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition for other grinding times. This fact makes dynamic nodal analysis and control problematic. The fact that the constraint solution approach gives a solution may suggest that normalization for closed networks is not necessary. Differences in solutions to the PBM cannot be excused away by inaccuracies in the data used to model the grinding phenomenon.

Early in the 60's the author served as Chairman of the Engineering Foundation's Coordinating Committee on Air Pollution Research. One of our objectives was the development of a study on the measurement of stack emissions. Three publications of the Foundation resulted from these efforts to focus attention on the stack sampling problem.1,2,3 Two of these were annotated bibliographies covering 197 references. The third reported the results of a workshop meeting at which some 21 individuals from research institutes, industry and government discussed the possible and probable areas of research that would add to or increase the ease, precision and utility of sampling gaseous and particulate matter emitted from stacks. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has had in its Power Test Codes a Standard Code for Determining the Dust Concentration in a Gas stream4 since 1941, The American Industrial Hygiene Association has published, in its Air Pollution Manual,5 a Section on Stack Sampling. Industry and regulatory agency requirements for stack sampling have utilized some modification of the alternatives in methodology. Traveling grate is a widely used process for iron ore pellet production; however, the thermal state of pellets in drying section is still unclear. In this study, the temperature distribution of drying section was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Based on the calculated results of airflow velocity, space temperature distribution, and the temperature change of pellets, it concluded that there is a coupling effect in drying section in traveling grate. The gas with higher temperature in DDD transfers heat to UDD through the gap of the insulation board, and the temperature gradient of the pellet bed changed before reaching the insulation board. The characteristics of pellet bed expected to appear in DDD was displayed in UDD in advance. Moreover, a contrast experiment was conducted to verify the model.

Coal is the nation's most abundant fossil energy resource. However, its use is limited because of the nature and amount of associated impurities, such as mineral matter, sulfur, trace elements, and moisture. The moderate-to high- sulfur content of many U.S. coals is of particular concern as current and newer, potentially more stringent, regulations require reduction in sulfur oxide emissions. Release of particulates, NOx, and other pollutants during the coal-use cycle is also of concern. The current practice of controlling sulfur oxide emissions in the major steps of the coal- use cycle is limited mainly to coal preparation by physical beneficiation and, to a smaller extent, to post-utilization cleanup (flue gas desulfurization). Approximately two-thirds of the coal from states east of the Mississippi river is physically cleaned, whereas only 15% to 20% of the operating boilers in the utility industry are equipped with scrubbers to desulfurize the flue gas (Henzel, 1988). Physical beneficiation methods can be very effective in removing mineral matter, including pyritic sulfur, from coal. These processes take advantage of the differences in physical proper- ties between coal and mineral matter to achieve the separation. In a typical physical cleaning operation, raw coal is crushed to about a 50-mm (2-inch) top size. It is then screened into coarse, intermediate, and fine sizes. Crushing the coal liberates some of the ash-forming minerals, including a portion of the sulfur that is not chemically bound to the coal. The per- centage of impurities freed from the coal matrix generally increases as the coal particle size decreases. The coarse- and intermediate-sized coals are typically subjected to a cleaning pro- cess based on differences in specific gravity between coal particles and the associated impurities. Such cleaning processes used include jigs, dense-medium baths, cyclone systems, and concentrating tables. The fine-sized (typically less than 0.5-mm) coal, if beneficiated, is typically cleaned using a froth flotation technique based on the differences in surface proper- ties between coal and its associated impurities. At fine sizes, greater cleaning potential exists because a greater portion of the impurities is released from the coal matrix. However, this potential is not fully realized owing to inefficiencies in separating fine particles using state- of-the-art flotation technology. Overall, current commercial coal preparation processes are estimated to remove up to 60% of the ash and 10% to 30% of the sulfur, depending on the coal characteristics, with product weight recoveries rang- ing from about 60% to 90% and thermal recoveries of about 85% to 98% (Versar, 1985; Science Applications International Corporation, 1987; Hoffman- Muntner Corporation, 1978). For many U.S. coals, grinding to sizes finer than those used in current coal preparation plants is required to liberate most of the physically bound impurities from the coal matrix. As noted, conventional coal-cleaning methods are not very effective at these fine sizes. Accordingly, the expanded use of domestic coal requires the development of advanced coal cleaning technologies that can provide economic performance while reducing environmental impacts. Program Goals and Objectives The overall goal of the U.S. Department of Energy (D0E)'s Coal Preparation Program is to provide the scientific and engineering knowledge base that industry can utilize to produce economically competitive and environmentally acceptable clean-coal products for introduction as market conditions warrant. The coal preparation process(es) should remove undesirable components from coal and improve its handling characteristics, thus making the product coal technically, as well as economically, viable as a competitor with petroleum-derived fuels and natural gas, and with alternative environmental control technologies. The coal preparation process must be applicable to a wide variety of bituminous and low-rank coals. The cleaning process should reduce the variability among clean-coal products from various raw coals, thus significantly increasing the range of potential end uses for each raw coal. The paper about to be presented deals with the relatively straightforward problem of mining two seams of coal separated by an interval. This may seem to be a simple problem but within a twenty-mile radius of Consolidation Coal Company's Burning Star # 4 Mine at least seven (7) different techniques of two-seam mining have either been tried or are now in use. This great variety of techniques should point out that there is no single simple solution; a conclusion often reached when dealing with mining problems. As a background for the techniques presently in use at the Burning Star # 4 Mine, we will briefly outline the other five (5) stripping techniques used in the area: 1. Captain Hine 6360 Range Diagram (Figure 1) 2. Leahy Mine Range Diagram (Figure 2) 3. Burning Star # 3 Mine 5860 Range Diagram (Figure 3) 4. Burning Star # 3 and # 4 Mines Dragline in Pit Range Diagram (Figure 4) 5. Captain Hine 2570/5561 Range Diagram (Figure 5) Each of these techniques was chosen because it provided the best and least expensive alternative for mining the coal under the particular restraints encountered. The Mine Engineers at our Burning Star # 4 Mine, Mr. Dennis Mahan and Mr. William Weaver, will now detail two additional mining techniques, out-lining our experience to date.

INTRODUCTION The National Park Service (NPS) conducted a research program from mid-1975 to early 1978 to measure alpha radiation levels in natural caves which it administers. Subsequently, a long-term management program was developed which has conducted routine monitoring of radiation levels and has computed employee exposure accumulations in certain NPS caves. The overall program: research and management; was undertaken to evaluate the possible health hazard to cave visitors, interpreters, researchers, maintenance personnel, concessions employees and other workers and to protect their health. The results of this work have been reported extensively elsewhere (see References 1 through 3, 5, 6, 9 through 13, and 14 through 26). This paper deals with the relation of radon gas and daughter produced radiation levels to the cave air flows which mobilize them. These flows are a function of interior cave and exterior ambient air temperatures and pressures and of the cave's geophysical configuration. The low-level, ionizing radiation is produced by minute concentrations of radon and thoron gases which emanate from within caves. Because of confinement, the radiation levels are often appreciably higher than in surface atmospheres. Subsequent radioactive disintegration of the gases into their ionized "daughter" products, which are particulates, permits distribution of the alpha radiation throughout a cave system. The extent and character of this distribution depends upon the particular cave and the air flows which it produces. Thus, the alpha radiation serves as a "tracer" to describe the flows. The flow analysis is divided into two parts: 1) A qualitative description with respect to the two basic geophysical cave types over both long-term (annual) and short-term (diurnal to weekly) periods. 2) A quantitative description of the unsteady, uniform and non-uniform, one-dimensional, incompressible motions for both influent and effluent air flow situations in both basic geophysical cave types. A part of the qualitative description presents "Special Measurement" data: Tsivoglou [vs.] Kusnetz working levels, Tsivoglou individual daughter levels and free ion concentrations, radon gas concentrations, and equilibrium ratios. A great deal of important work has been carried out by Mr. Bobby C. Carson, Cave Radiation Technician at Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky. He reports these findings later in this conference (Ref. 6). Some of his results have been used here to establish the cave air flow analysis. Other National Park Service personnel have made measurements at others of the caves for which data are reported here. All of this work and cooperation has been vital to the success of this research program. It is very much appreciated. THEORETICAL FLOW DESCRIPTION Previously reported research (See Ref's. 20, 21, 23 and 25) has established the qualitative relationship between the alpha radiation in caves and their natural air flows. The radiation serves as a representation of these air flows. Changes in radiation with time represent changes in the main forces which produce the air flows. The quantitative data have substantiated that [all caves in which the primary cause of air flow is due to temperature produced gravity (density) gradients and also having minimal man-made disturbances, experience seasonal variations in airborne alpha radiation. The radiation levels increase in summer but decrease in winter], based upon seasonal air movements through each cave system which occur naturally. Two general types of physical cave configurations which control the air flows have been identified as: 1. Those which go up into a hillside or mountainside: Type I ("Upside-down" = USD). 2. Those which go down into the earth; Type II ("Right-side-up" = RSU). These act to control the air flows seasonally. The summer increase in Type I caves is due to increased air flows, whereas in Type II caves it results from stagnation or reduced air flows. This seeming paradox is explained by the physics of the air flow regime in each cave type and has been detailed elsewhere [Ref's. (20), (22) through (25)]. It[ i] true, in general, that air flow decreases airborne radiation in the [immediate vicinity] in which it occurs. Any paradox results from subsequent distribution throughout the case as to [ how] the air moves through a cave [system] with respect to time and space. Exceptions to the cave air flow "rule" are: 1. Caves in which pressure gradients and pressure fluctuations [predominate] in producing the air flows. 2. Caves in which man-made effects and management practices are superimposed on the natural air flow regime. Man-made disturbances which can alter the natural cave air flows are tunnels, elevator shafts, bore holes, sealed and closed portals, etc. If these are not properly sealed, the natural air flows which they change will totally alter the distribution and seasonal variations of the alpha radiation levels. These exceptions may act separately or in combination.

This paper will present the results of an analysis of several abandoned coal mine projects and includes field data for over a dozen different reclamation projects recently completed in the state of West . Virginia. The analysis was performed with the objective of summarizing and or classification of the environmental consequences with reference to the characteristics of the mining facilities (surface, underground, etc.). The analysis also addressed the itemized cost of remediation with respect to procedures, environmental concerns and time. The results of the analysis are that each abandoned coal mine site in West Virginia have/had many unique features and in most cases include a combination of environmental concerns that complicate comparisons. The study also revealed that the abandoned mine land program for mines abandoned prior to 1977 that is being financed by a tax on the production of coal, has produced many benefits for the state of West Virginia. This grant program administered by the Office of Surface Mining, has resulted in a high quality methodology of remediation that has been successful for many years in greatly minimizing and/or eliminating environmental concerns from abandoned coal mines.

Stringent environmental regulations, which have limited the use of sludge ponds, coupled with the economic incentive to clean more 'coal or to add fine coal cleaning additions to existing preparation plants have increased the use of static thickeners in preparation plants. The Lamella Gravity Settler, sometimes de signated Lamella Thickener, is a shallow depth sedimentation device which has been applied in a variety of industrial process and wastewater control projects in place of the conventional raked thickeners. This paper presents the theory and design of the La-mella Thickener, as well as describing the operating results from several full scale installations in a variety of Appalachian preparation plants.

At the beginning of the 80-s the first diamond pipe in the East-European platform was discovered in the North of the Russian Federation on the White Sea Winter coast. During several years while studying this unique area data on kimberlites and country rocks petrophysical characteristics have been collected. Considerable experience in geophysical methods when searching and exploring diamonds was accumulated, and various methods of geophysical data interpretation were used. It has been established from the analysis of geophysical data that diamond-bearing kimberlites are located in the most ancient and the most stable block of the East-European craton.

Toxic substances in On solutions can retard biological leaching of copper sulfide dump ores. On solutions were analyzed for metals, organics, and chloride, and showed inhibitory concentrations of aluminum, manganese, and chloride. Inhibition of bacterial activity by the solid fraction of On solution, with and without the organic constituents, was evaluated. Toxicity to bacterial species was evaluated by monitoring bacterial numbers, pH, Eh, and rates of iron oxidation. The On solution solids were toxic at 50 -60% of their field concentration. Most of the toxicity of the On solution was due to the organic fraction. Different SX reagents show varying degrees of inhibition of T. ferrooxidans. Bacterial inhibitory effects of carriers and lixiviants used in the SX plant should be determined so that entrained SX reagents do not retard biological dump leach systems. The reagents used should be the most cost effective and the least toxic.

Crushers are designed and manufactured to survive the severe duty of mining environments worldwide. Under these conditions the crusher performance and availability is one of the critical factors in the mine?s production and profitability. Traditionally the development of these machines tends to be experience-based, incremental improvements in design due to challenges of different applications, duty, or manufacturing. In order to better serve the mining industry a new approach was taken to the design of primary crushers. This approach was to focus on safety and maintenance activities. The result of this effort is a new generation of gyratory crushers that can be serviced from above. Using the features of this new generation of crushers to their fullest extent crushing installations have improved safety, reduced design and construction costs, and lowered maintenance requirements. This presentation explores the benefits of two crusher installations utilizing top service crushers.

Separation of minerals by shape has received little attention, since minerals normally do not break into different shapes during crushing and grinding. However, comminution of consumer wastes generates opportunities for novel separations based on particle shape. For instance, ductile plastics are broken into longer curved shapes, whereas brittle plastics yield angular particles. Using spouting beds for particle separation in water requires controlling the spout's instability. The preferred geometry for such redesigned spouting beds is reported. Plastic cylinders, discs and spheres were separated as a function of rising water velocity and amount of particles in the system. By using 5 mm particles, differences in settling behavior could be video recorded.

The City of Toronto is currently undertaking the design of the Black Creek Sanitary Trunk Sewer Relief Project. The Project involves the design and construction of approximately 20 kilometers of tunnel through shale rock of the Georgian Bay Formation and soft ground soil consisting of glacial till, glaciolacustrine and glaciofluvial sand, silt and clay deposits. The 20 kilometer alignment has been split into four sections of tunnel (1) the 12.9 km, 3.0 meter diameter Keele Trunk Relief Sewer, (2) the 2.9 km, 1.5 meter diameter Keele Trunk Relief Sewer Microtunnel, (3) the 3.9 km, 1.8 meter diameter Jane Relief Sewer, and (4) the 0.5 km,1.5 meter diameter Combined Sewer Overflow Storage Tunnel. Additionally, one 40,000 m3 wet weather flow (WWF) storage tank and numerous WWF connection shafts are to be constructed and connected to the Keele Trunk Relief Sewer to pick up WWF from existing outfalls currently discharging to Black Creek. The anticipated cost of the project is approximately $600 million with construction of the Project’s Phase One Works, the Keele Trunk Relief Sewer and Jane Relief Sewer, scheduled to commence in 2025. This paper provides an overview of the project in terms of the anticipated geotechnical conditions, the scheme developed for design and construction of the tunnel system and the associated schedule and procurement strategy. The consideration for planning of the tunnel system, the risk-based analysis and decision-making process are presented and form the basis for selection of a precast tunnel lining support method in the rock and soft ground.
