Experiments using an optically polished Pyrex disk and aqueous dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) films showed that the velocity with which the films recede increases markedly if the runs are repeated at short time intervals, where equilibrium cannot be reattained. This results from DAA molecules being desorbed from the disappearing liquid-air interface and being deposited on the solid-air interface being formed. Controlled experiments with Pyrex particles in a modified Hallimond tube showed a similar increase in flotation rate, again due to excess adsorption of DAA molecules that were transferred to the solid-air interface from the bubble on contact.

New Zealand is a small, almost pristinely pure country environmentally speaking. It is blessed with an abundance of clear waterways, lush green vegetation and fresh clean air. It is a country in which agriculture and forestry predominate, and mining developments have to be introduced prepared to answer in considerable detail the question "How will this proposal affect the New Zealand environment as we know it today". Those who make the legislation have the difficult problem of establishing standards at a level which will maintain as far as possible the status quo without unduly inhibiting the developments currently approaching the starting line. We have been fortunate in some sense in that since the demise of the early gold rush days by the 1920's, little mineralisation of a complex nature has been uncovered in New Zealand. Coal fields have been developed in the central North Island, and on the West Coast and Southland regions of the South Island. A ban on large scale open cast mines in the Coromandel area has restricted mining in that highly prospective area, although three large gold prospects have got underway elsewhere in the last three years. There is no other ore processing being undertaken at present. Some recent proposals involving lead, gold and silver in complex arseno­ sulphides have failed to get the necessary approvals and have been discarded. Our ore processing problems are therefore straightforward ones, and confine themselves to acid drainage, mercury handling and disposal, and cyanide.

Lornex Mining Corporation operates an open pit porphyry copper mine in the Highland Valley southwest of Kamloops with a rated capacity of 43 500 TPD (48,000 TPD). It went into production in April 1972. Its concentrator consists of two grinding and flotation circuits in parallel each composed of a 6 000 KW (8,000 HP) 9,75 m (32 foot) diameter by 4,724 m (15'-6") semi-autogenous primary mill feeding two 3 000 KW (4,000 HP) 5,029 m (16.5 foot) diameter by 7,01 m (23 foot) secondary ball mills each feeding a bank of flotation cells. ,The original tailings system picked up the tailings from the flota¬tion circuits in a concrete collection box in the mill and carried the 36% solids density by weight slurry 488 m (1,600LF) through a 1100 mm (42 inch) diameter wood stave pipeline on a .46 percent slope to three 99,06 m (325 foot) diameter center drive thickeners. From the collection box under the thickeners the tailings line con¬sisted of three sections, carrying 50% solids density slurry. The first section consisted of 1460 m (4,800 LF) of 910 mm (36 inch) asbestos cement pipe for gravity flow from the thickener under flow elevation of 1252,4 m (4,109 feet) to the first pump station at elevation 1207,6 m (3,962 feet). Eight concrete drop boxes were used to limit the maximum slope on the pipeline to 0.5 percent.

Introduction Brine reservoirs along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf coasts are currently under study to investigate the technical and economic viability of production wells designed to extract methane gas in solution. The effect of well pressure drawdown on reservoir rock and associated overburden material is important to well performance predictions and the analysis of potential subsidence problems. Consequently a series of compaction tests have been conducted on sandstone and shale cored from a test well drilled near Hitchcock, Texas, in order to determine the variation of mechanical properties to be expected over the producing life of the formation. Previous Work The referenced tests are part of an extended study of geopressured-geothermal reservoir behavior, including compaction (Jogi, Gray, Ashman, and Thompson, 1981 and Jogi, Kalra, Gray, and Thompson, 1981) and creep (Thompson, Jogi, Gray, and Richardson, 1981) tests of reservoir rock and related reservoir performance studies (Rago, Okhuma, Seperhnoori, and Thompson, 1985). Recent work has considered the nonlinear constitutive behavior of sandstone (Fahrenthold and Gray, 1985 and 19861, while additional experimental work is reported here. Geological structure and composition of the Hitchcock field from which the core samples were obtained is discussed by Light (1985). Experimental Procedure Compaction tests were conducted on cylindrical cores, nominally 2.75 inches in length and 2 inches in diameter, with independent control of the axial, confining, and pore pressures. Axial and radial deformation of the samples were measured in tests over a range of effective stress states expected to develop over the reservoir lifetime. The term effective stress as used here refers to the algebraic difference of the total stress and pore pressure, with compression taken as positive. Three types of compaction tests were conducted on the sandstone. In the uniaxial tests, axial total stress and radial strain were held constant as the pore pressure was reduced, similating one dimensional compaction which may occur during reservoir depletion. In the triaxial tests, radial total stress and pore pressure were held constant as the axial total stress was increased, duplicating conventional rock compaction test procedures. In the pore pressure drawdown tests, axial and radial total stresses were held constant while the pore pressure was reduced, in order to investigate differences in sample response to mechanical and pore pressure loading. Compaction tests were also conducted on shale material obtained from the reservoir overburden. The field coring process provided few consolidated shale sections sufficiently large to allow preparation of samples with the dimensions described above. With additional attrition during sample preparation of this brittle material, ultimate yield of the coring effort was limited. The few available samples were tested in uniaxial and triaxial tests similar to those described above. The use of displacement transducers to measure sample deformation avoided the difficulty of strain gauge installation on this material. Test Results The sandstone and shale both demonstrated nonlinear stress-strain behavior, with hysteresis and residual strain present upon unloading. Polynomial interpolation of the stress-strain curves was used in the calculation of incremental values for the loading and unloading moduli. Figures 1 and 2 show example axial effective stress-axial strain curves for triaxial tests conducted on sandstone and shale samples. The figures plot incremental stress and strain variables, defined as deviations from the state of prestress to which the sample was subjected. The state of prestress was varied between tests in order to investigate material behavior over the entire stress and strain space of interest. Introduction Minerals exploration is one step in the mining industry's task of providing raw materials to basic industries. The industry's provision of raw materials involves identifying and evaluating resources, converting them to reserves, and intelligent, economic exploitation of these reserves. The mineral process focuses on identification and evaluation. Reserves are ore bodies and ore bodies are, by definition, wasting assets. Therefore, if an adequate provision of raw materials to basic industry is to continue, these wasting assets (ore bodies) must be replaced with new or different reserves as current reserves are depleted. Minerals exploration is a geologic problem and is fundamentally deductive, flowing from the general to the specific. Past exploration methods and philosophy have amply supplied the resources to meet the demands of an industrial society. During the past decade, however, the framework where mineral resources were identified, defined, and evaluated has changed. Mineral explorationists no longer can rely solely on the successful past methods to provide the necessary resources for our complex society. Productive explorationists must effectively and efficiently use tools and procedures that will maximize exploration efforts. Past tools need not be abandoned, but should be critically reviewed and revised in light of current scientific knowledge and technical advances. Future explorationists will view their craft not as a single discipline, but as a thoughtful integration of geophysics, geochemistry, and geostatistics for solving interrelated problems. This integration of the geosciences will lead to successful mineral exploration. Not only will the productive explorationist generate new information, he will master the use of existing data for identifying and evaluating a mineral resource. The mineral exploration process consists of incentives, ideas, finance, area, staff, time, and luck. The exploration process that stems from the interaction of these elements has three stages, each bound by a major decision point. They are selection, reconnaissance, and definition. Subsequent evaluation and exploitation phases are considered more the function of mining engineers than the exploration geologist. Mineral exploration endeavors that have been productive have three attributes fundamental to success: commitment, competence, and persistence. Commitment Commitment is believing that exploring for mineral resources is worth performing. While the mining industry is the focus of this commitment, government and society must also be committed to the concept of mineral reserve identification through exploration activity. Government demonstrates its commitment by providing access to land for exploration and, if it is successful, exploitation can take place. Realistic legislation relating to taxation, land use, reclamation, and environmental constraints is indicative of government commitment to intelligent resource use. The public must come to terms with mineral resource evaluation and extraction. Without some form of commitment from the public, availability of mineral resources vital to basic industry will be largely in the control of a foreign and potentially unstable mining industry. Commitment to a mineral resource identification-evaluation-extraction system must be shared equally by government, society, and the minerals industry. The scope and direction of this commitment varies, with the industry's commitment to explore for mineral resources being the most apparent. Industry commitment is the belief at all levels of exploration (from senior corporate executives to individual field and support staff) that exploration is worth performing, that exploration goals can be met, and that their particular organization is the best and the only group that can successfully accomplish the project. The investigation, selection, and implementation of remedial activities for large, complex mining and milling sites is dependent on the cost-effective management of tailing and waste materials. Site investigations evaluate the contaminant source areas, assess the potential release rate of contaminants, and determine the acceptable contaminant release rate for the site. Selection of appropriate remedial activities is based on evaluation of constructability, reliability, performance, effectiveness, permanence and cost. Remedial technologies available for tailing and waste material include removal, consolidation, capping and drainage control. Proper implementation and documentation of the selected remedial activities are critical to the overall success or failure of the remedial program. A step-by-step process, established at the initiation of a project, should accurately document all construction activities, monitor environmental conditions at the site, assess the performance of the remedial activities, and, ultimately certify that the remedial activities have met relevant and appropriate standards. Case histories are presented for a uranium mill at Uravan, Colorado and a lead, zinc mine at Gilman, Colorado. These case histories provide examples as to the combination of remedial technologies that have been applied at these specific sites.

The advantages offered by mechanical mining have been demonstrated in the underground mining of coal, evaporites and other soft minerals. Mechanical mining and the advancements in automation technoloogies have been the principal drivers towards the realization of enhanced productivity in soft rock mining. For past two decades, emphasis has been placed on developing mechanical mining technology for hard rock applications, to achieve similar productivity improvements and cost reductions. The benefits of mechanical mining are numerous, particularly in an industry where market conditions continue to dictate higher production and lower costs while maintaining high safety standards. Other benefits of mechanical mining include reduced ground support and labor requirements and the elimination of blast and diesel fumes. These benefits further make this technology an attractive alternative to drill and blast for hard rock mining. Mechanical mining is conducive to full implementation of remote control and automation technologies that are under development to achieve further productivity and safety improvements in underground mining. Mine development has been the main focus area for mechanical miners by manufacturers and mining companies. Potential applications include ore body access, haulage and ventilation drifts, undercut and exploration drifts. The economic use of this technology in mine production is still considered many years away. It would need a major technological breakthrough that would make mechanical rock fragmentation competitive with the large-scale, low-cost production blasting operations.

Ammonia and nitrate in metallurgical operations arise from several sources: (1) the use of ammonium nitrate based explosives, e.g. ANFO; (2) the use of cyanide for gold extraction which is degraded to ammonia by most cyanide destruction techniques; and (3) the use of nitrogenous reagents in the mill for neutralisation, flotation and extraction. The concentrations of ammonia and nitrate in effluents vary from 10-50 ppm and 25-300 ppm respectjvely. A number of environmental problems are associated with both ammonia and nitrate. Both of these forms of nitrogen can contribute to the eutrophication of receiving waters. Ammonia and organic nitrogen can also cause high dissolved oxygen demands in receiving waters. Ammonia is also toxic to fish, particularly at elevated pH values. Several methods are in use for the removal of ammonia and nitrate from municipal wastewater, industrial effluents and agricultural runoff. To date, no treatment systems have been developed specifically for the removal of nitrogen from mine and mill effluents. This paper will report on some removal techniques that have been tested using actual and synthetic mine effluents.

The basis for the data in this paper, in addition to public sources of information such as federal and state government agencies and the open literature, was a program of 57 face-to-face interviews with individuals knowledgeable in the bentonite production, consumption, and transportation industries. This article examines health and safety trends during the past 10 years at Appalachian surface and underground bituminous coal mines. Data for Appalachia include Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia and eastern Kentucky. These states account for more than 90% of the coal production in the Appalachian region. (Production, accidents and fatalities in Ohio, Maryland, Tennessee and Alabama are not included in computing Appalachian trends.) Trends for Appalachian underground mines are differentiated by size and mining method into three categories: - Small mines with fewer than 50 employees. - Large nonlongwall mines with 50 or more employees. - Longwall mines (mines with at least one longwall production face).

In recent years a great number of papers have been presented at symposiums and have appeared in the literature relative to geologic prediction for rapid excavation and tunneling. Many of these papers describe research projects now underway to investigate tunnel site selection by remote sensing techniques, seismic holography, electro¬magnetic pulse sounding, optical scanning for structural features, and many other exotic geophysical techniques. While it is possible that this research will produce techniques that may prove to be very useful, it appears for the present at least, and perhaps for another decade, that there still will be no substitute for conventional exploration methods such as coring boring, geologic mapping, studies of existing wells, and proven geophysical techniques. Nevertheless, there is still room for tremendous improvement in the conventional techniques for geologic prediction in tunneling. These include: more rapid and accurately aligned coring borings drilled parallel to the tunnel alignment; improved geophysical surveys both prior and during construction; improved methods for predicting ground¬water inflows and water pressures, both of which can greatly influence the cost of driving tunnels. Geophysical techniques can also be ap¬plied to locate deeply incised glacial troughs or ancient buried stream channels that might cross the tunnel alignment. In the meantime, while some researchers continue their efforts to¬ward a breakthrough in new techniques for geologic prediction, it is recommended that other researchers direct their efforts toward sol¬ving specific problems such as accurately predicting ground-water conditions, determining locations of high geostatic stresses, and locations of major fault and shear zones.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, WMATA, has constructed over 92 revenue miles of rapid transit facilities including some 14 miles of rock tunnel and 12 miles of earth tunnel. The system map is shown in Figure 1. During construction it is not unusual for contractor to encounter ground conditions resulting in major problems and extra cost. Problems such as major rockfalls and a "stuck" boring machine in squeezing rock are not unusual. In recent years, faced with additional tunnel construction projects, the Authority has sought newer tunneling methods which might be less costly. One new method which has been tried is NATM, the New Austrian Tunnel¬ing Method. NATM, which is applicable to both soft ground, mixed face and rock tunneling, relies on miners and comparatively small machines to excavate in conventional ways, but it is unique in its methods of obtaining "stand-up" time at the excavated face and its method of using shotcrete as an initial lining, frequently with a drainage system to reduce hydro-static pressure on the final lining. Lower costs result from use of a cast-in-place concrete liner, and from a reduction in the number of work operations at the mine heading which provides better daily production. WMATA has recently completed three twin bore tunnels constructed by NATM technology. The first was the Wheaton Tunnel and Section, followed by the tail track tunnel to total some 4200 linear feet cut through jointed rock up to 270 feet below ground surface, and the last was in soft ground at Fort Totten. INTRODUCTION In ore beneficiation one of the simplest methods of mineral concentration is hand picking to remove either the ore or the waste material from a moving table or conveyor belt. Ore Sorting Equipment may be defined as equipment for mechanized picking. This type of equipment has been used successfully over the past thirty years or so to beneficiate ores of various types in particle mesh sizes between 1mm and 200mm.. at throughputs of up to 150 tonnes per hour. In general for ore sorting to be a consideration the ore and the waste material must be well liberated in the feed to the sorter (that is into practically discrete particles of ore and waste). The larger the liberation size the more likely sorting is to be cost effective. Correct selection of ore sorting equipment is most important and often special machine features are developed for an individual application. Sorter performance can be best determined by extensive testwork of representative ore at design tonnage on prototype or preferably on production model sorting machines. ADVANTAGES OF SORTING ORE The four main advantages of sorting ore are: Reduced milling cost. Reduced processing cost. Higher overall recovery. Reduced transportation costs. Reduced Milling Cost With sorters installed the milling plant following the sorter is generally smaller and hence less costly to install and operate as it only has to handle the sorter product. However this benefit is somewhat offset by the increased cost of the screening and washing plant prior to the sorter and the cost of the sorting plant itself. Reduced Processing Cost As there is less material of higher grade presented to the concentrating plant following the sorter, this plant will generally be smaller and less costly to construct and operate than a plant treating the total quantity of material. Alaska, with about 74% of the US continental shelf, is largely unexplored for placers in its vast shallow marine waters. Nevertheless, there are numerous occurrences of marine minerals including gold, platinum, and cassiterite. Offshore dredging has recently begun in the Nome area. State and Federal agencies are preparing additional acreage for leasing. With 76,200 km (47,300 miles) or 54% of the US coastline, Alaska is a vast, largely unexplored frontier for shallow-water marine placers. Despite the general lack of mapping and only sporadic past prospecting, many prospects are known and a major mining operation for gold has recently begun offshore of Nome. Due largely to the demonstrated success of the Nome operation, the US Minerals Management Service is preparing to conduct a lease sale of additional acreage further offshore from Nome. And future sales are being considered elsewhere by both the Federal and state leasing agencies.

No one involved in the contruction business wants litigation, except maybe some lawyers. Contractors rarely resort to litigation unless they have sustained econmic wounds that are serious or mortal. The major cause of serious contractor losses occur because of sub-surface conditions which cannot be defined with certainty in any practicable way except as shown during construction and prove during construction to be substantially worse and more expensive to cope with than anticipated during bidding. Building, Dam and Highway contractors are generally close in their estimates of cost after they get foundations excavated and are building above ground. Their main risk in bidding is the cost of getting out of the ground compared to their estimate. So maybe 10%, 20% or even 30% of their project represent high risk underground work. The tunneling and underground contractor is dealing with high risk work for virtually 100% of his project. He appreciates this risk and is willing to assume it up to a bearable limit. His costs are highly sensitive to relatively small variations of the ground in underground work. His work is unique in other respects. As contrasted with other types of construction where loads develop as construction progresses and do not reach ultimate until the project becomes operative, tunnel and underground construction requires the immediate structural support of ultimate loads that are there when he digs or very soon thereafter. Canada still remains today a strong resource nation with a huge geological potential. Canada ranks among the top five leading countries in the production of 15 major minerals. Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a serious environmental problem that preoccupies the Canadian Mining Industry. Considerable amounts of money are spent every year in an effort to prevent or reduce the acid mine drainage production. It is estimated that across Canada there are a few thousand abandoned mine sites as a result of the last fifty years of mining. Most of these sites are acid producing presenting a serious threat to the environment. It has been estimated that the cost of stabilizing and reclaiming these sites across Canada will be over $5 billion over the next twenty years. Current practices for decommissioning acid producing sites are water covers (flooding), dry covers, revegetation and treatment of the acid effluents. This paper presents the technical and legal issues of mine closure and reclamation in Canada. The methods used in the revegetation of acid producing mine sites is also presented This paper also reviews the financial guarantee requirements for mine closure by the provincial legislations in Canada. A case study of stabilizing and reclaiming a sulphide tailings area in the Sudbury region is presented. It illustrates the challenges facing the Canadian Government and the mining companies in restoring and revegetating the closed and abandoned mine sites across Canada.

Mine planning and scheduling done with computer programs is possible only after extensive work has been completed to define the geologic extent of an ore body and an overall mine design. Mine planning methodology on computer can vary from computerized engineering tasks through systems which completely optimize a plan with little input from an engineer during the actual scheduling process. However, a strong emphasis is placed on producing practical mining sequences which may be "best" rather than "optimum". This section offers several viewpoints on the planning process using computers. Interactive planning and scheduling systems are attractive for many companies because they are easy for engineers to understand, and the results are acceptable. The engineer develops an open pit mine sequence by trial and error using interactive graphics. The results of this approach can usually be improved. A computer program can help an engineer make many trials in a short time period and provide a higher level of confidence that a "best" plan has been generated.

Techniques for dealing with copper-gold ores are reviewed. Cyanide has little selectivity of gold over copper, and depending on the reactivity of the copper minerals cut-off grades for gold recovery by direct cyanidation are generally below 0.5% copper for oxide ores and 1 % for sulfide ores. Non-cyanide gold leachants also tend to be reactive to copper. The cheapest option for sulfidic ores is to produce a flotation concentrate for smelting, while transition ores generally need a sulfidisation pre-treatment. The requirement for the concentrate to have a high enough copper grade to be acceptable to a smelter may compromise copper and gold recovery. This can lead to significant gold grades in the flotation tailing, and copper levels in the tailing that are too high for direct cyanidation to be able to recover the gold. Oxidised ores, flotation tailing or other material not amenable to flotation represent the greatest grey area for gold recovery. Copper removal by acid, alkaline or ferric pre-treatment is possible though not generally used. Cyanide pre-leaching to remove copper, followed by copper and cyanide recovery represents a potential option that has been installed at one Australian gold plant, where copper is recovered onto carbon, ahead of the slower leaching gold. Actual cyanide recovery depends on ore mineralogy, allowing for losses as cyanate, thiocyanate, carbonate and ferrocyanide. Alternative options for gold recovery following cyanide leaching include precipitation, ion exchange and solvent extraction of the gold. Ammonia-cyanide leaching may offer another option for more selective gold dissolution from flotation tailing and oxidised materials. A plant is currently under construction in Mauritania.

In the context of this session on "Practical Placer Mining," a projection of the present into the future first assumes that there is a future for Placers. The second assumption is that there is the combination of adequate reserves and a willing, mining investment source to finance placers. This paper will point out the opportunities on both assumptions, illustrating my positive position on the future of gold placers. In order to focus this paper more effectively, I have chosen GOLD as the subject mineral. However, it is recognized that much of the technology for exploring and mining gold placers has been applied to other alluvial deposits; including platinum, diamond, tin, and various industrial minerals (which are often referred to as "placers" though this contradicts historical definitions). Over the past 10 years I have presented several papers on the general subject of placers, most of which are listed under References. These have included topics such as exploration, evaluation, small-scale gold placer mining and decision-making, mining and processing equipment designs, and dredge-mining operations. In an attempt to identify the more promising, undeveloped placer potentials in the world I have usually mentioned the USSR and China but qualified them as being either inaccessible, or, politically difficult to obtain. However, with recent developments in the USSR, the obstacles appear to be somewhat diminished.

Marine manganese nodules harbor a mixed population of manganese-oxidizing and -reducing bacteria, as well as bacteria that do not act on manganese. They also host phagotrophic protozoa. Out of several laboratory studies, one line of investigation indicates that some kinds of bacteria found on nodules can catalyze the oxidation of Mn2+ bound to Mn(IV) oxide at the surface of nodules at in situ temperature and pressure. In the absence of appropriate bacteria, the rate of oxidation of the surface-bound Mn2+ is significantly slower. How Fe(III) is incorporated is still unclear. Base metals such as Cu, Ni and Co, which are usually found in marine nodules in various quantities, may be incorporated through scavenging by Mn(IV) oxide. Laboratory evidence shows that some other bacteria on nodules can reduce the Mn(IV) oxide to Mn2+ in the presence of an appropriate source of reducing power in the form of organic carbon. The reduction of Mn(IV) oxide mobilizes manganese and trace metals such as Cu, Ni, and Co in the nodules. These bacteria reduce Mn(IV) whether oxygen is present or not. They could be harnessed in the bioleaching of nodules. The manganese(IV)-reducing bacteria and the bacteria that neither oxidize nor reduce manganese are thought to keep the organic matter in the nodule environment sufficiently low to favor bacterial manganese-oxidation, which in laboratory tests is inhibited by excess organic carbon. The preying by the protozoa on the different kinds of bacteria is thought to control the bacterial population on nodules and ensure continued growth of the manganese-oxidizing bacteria and the nodules. To eliminate interference from seawater salts in the bioleaching of Mn, Cu, Ni and Co, it may be more advantageous to use terrestrial Mn(IV)-reducing bacteria than the Mn(IV)-reducing bacteria resident on nodules. The terrestrial bacteria would allow bioleaching in fresh water. Unlike the marine bacteria, most terrestrial bacteria studied to date reduce Mn(IV) oxide only anaerobically. A general outline for an anaerobic bioleach process of marine nodules with freshwater bacteria is discussed.
