Should the code appreciate that the degree of reliability of estimates required will vary with the type of mining planned? How does one "confirm continuity" as required by the code? The aim of optimum development drilling is to achieve appropriate ore zone definition for acceptable estimates of reserves and their economic extraction. Polycrystalline oxide superconductors that have the perovskite structure, that are oxygen deficient, and that have compositions based. on the so-called. 1-2-3 (YBa2Cu3O7) compound, were investigated.. The materials exhibit a high critical transition to superconductivity at temperatures near 90oK. It was determined that maintaining the oxygen content within the correct range in connection with an appropriate amount of CU ions in the crystal lattice leads to high-critical temperature (Tc:) superconducting properties. High-Tc: superconductors with a critical temperature in the range of 100°K were developed. Further investigations, based. on the theoretical examinations of the origin of superconductivity, have been performed and are discussed..

Block cave mining, in its broadest sense, has transitioned from an orebody/rock mass determined method of extraction, to a low-cost and high production mining method that may be applied to any large ore deposit. This inherently means that caving is now required in more complex rock mass conditions where assistive damage, through preconditioning, may be necessary. This requires comprehensive understanding of the geology, and its interwoven relationship with geotechnical parameters, and is made more challenging due to limited exposure in block cave mines. Limited mine development throughout the cave volume equates to a heavy reliance on drilling data in terms of observations, modelling of the mine geology, and collection of geotechnical data. This translates as increased uncertainty of geological and geotechnical models and has potential to impact significantly on the ability to make informed decisions in the design and operation of the cave mine.Modelling of cave propagation behaviour requires a complex, coupled system of draw of material, flow of material through the cave stocks, and propagation of the cave-back assisted by autogenic stress-related breakage of the rock mass, manifested as seismicity. The role of geological features in the process of cave propagation is not well understood and requires evaluation on a mine-specific basis, given the diversity of geological controls/settings of ore deposits and local variability of stress fields.Seismic monitoring systems can elucidate key geological features and domains, as heterogeneous seismogenic activity is observed ahead of the advancing cave-back. The observations made from analysis of seismic monitoring data may have potential to be used as a validation tool for numerical modelling of predicted cave behaviour in similar geological settings (eg next lift/panel).Understanding of the geological structure, at all scales, is critical to optimise the design and operating decisions made in a block cave operation. At present, intermediate-scale structure, anisotropy, mineralogy and model uncertainty may be neglected or under-represented despite their likely significant role in the mechanisms of cave propagation.Insights from an analysis of the Ridgeway Deeps block cave mine are discussed in this paper.CITATION:Murphy, T, Webster, A and Chitombo, G, 2016. In 1801, Hatchett discovered the oxide of a new element while he was examining a heavy black mineral from Haddam, America, which had been presented to the British Museum. He named the mineral Columbite and the metal Columbium. A year later a Swedish investigator, Eckeberg, while working with a new mineral resembling columbite-yttrotantalite discovered a new element, to which he gave the name of tantalum.In 1844, Rose announced the existence of two new elements in a sample of columbite from Bodenmais. One was similar to Eckeberg's tantalum and the other was called Niobium. Wollaston, in 1909, attempted to show experimentally that columbium and the tantalum were identical, but it was soon proved that they were two separate elements. Subsequently a number of investigatiors found other "new elements" in tantalum and columbium bearing ores, but these were shown to be mixtures of the twin metals.Since Hatchett's Columbium and Rose's Niobium are identical, it is more fitting to use the name assigned to this element by the earlier investigator. However, the term niobium is still retained in Germany and England.The separation of tantalum and columbium has been one of the major problems for analytical chemists since the discovery of the two elements and it is only in recent years that tantalum of a high degree of purity has been produced. High purity columbium metal is probably still to be obtained.Until 1903 tantalum was merely a laboratory curiosity, but about this time its use in incandescent electric light bulb filaments was discovered. Eight years later it was replaced by tungsten, which was better and cheaper. For a time the electrolytic valve action of tantalum was used in the charging of storage batteries, but the chief uses of the metals' to-day are for corrosion resistant apparatus, in vacuum tubes and as carbides in the manufacture of hard cutting and shaping tools.Most of the recent work on the metals has been done by C.  Broken Hills is an adularia-sericite epithermal Au-Ag deposit, hosted in flow-banded rhyolites and overlying rhyolitic pyroclastic rocks in the eastern Hauraki Goldfield. The 7.1 Ma deposit was the largest producer of gold in the eastern Hauraki Goldfield, and was one of very few economic deposits hosted in Pliocene rhyolites. This paper presents the results of a recent study in the upper levels of the deposit. Maps and cross-sections constrain structural and lithological relationships, and the lateral and vertical extent of a breccia pipe û the major feature of the upper levels.   Previous studies in the upper levels of Broken Hills have shown that gold and silver values are concentrated around and within a large breccia pipe, mined by a series of æcaveÆ stopes and in veins. Contour diagrams of Au-Ag data from channel samples indicate that the breccia pipe was a major fluid channel-way for mineralising solutions.   The breccia pipe deposits are part of the dynamic geothermal system that formed the Broken Hills ore bodies; they developed as a result of hydrothermal brecciation in areas of structural weakness within a rhyolite pyroclastic unit that overlies a massive rhyolite lava-flow unit. The main breccia pipe begins near the rhyolite/pyroclastic contact, having the shape of an inverted, inclined cone, and consists of silicified breccia, stringers of quartz, and irregular patches of clay-altered country rock. Smaller zones or pockets of hydrothermal eruption breccia are silicified and contain low grade gold in the matrix and in the adjacent silicified wall rocks.   Quartz has been classified according to its physical characteristics as seen in situ and hand specimens indicate that vein definition decreases upwards, perhaps as a result of changing lithological conditions and/or increasing proximity to the paleosurface. Hydrothermal quartz is widespread as veins and as a replacement mineral, or lining fractures and cavities and overgrowing rock fragments. Breccias contain vein quartz, but some quartz veins cross-cut breccias, indicating that vein and breccia formation was relatively synchronous and overlapped in time.   Disseminated gold-silver mineralisation is associated with vein quartz and silicic alteration of the wall rock within the breccia pipe. The auriferous zones are highly irregular and erratic, and sampling results show a wide range of gold-silver ratios, suggesting that highly volatile physiochemical conditions prevailed during mineralisation.

Since the mid 1950s, limonite deposits of a new type have been found in the northwest of Western Australia. The deposits consist of extensive fossil valley fillings up to several hundred feet in depth, of medium to high grade limonite, frequently containing limonitized fossil wood, and of Mesozoic or Tertiary age. The distribution of the deposits is closely linked with hilly outcrops of Archaean and Proterozoic jaspilite in the headwaters of the old valleys, from which the iron has been derived by leaching, and presumably re-precipitated by a process not unlike that which operates in forming bog iron deposits. Due to the relative resistance of tlie limonite to erosion, the rejuvenation of streams in the area in recent times has left limonitic remnants as mesas up to· several hundred feet above the levels of the present creeks, the courses of which generally are adjacent to or within a few miles of those of the old limonite filled valleys.The Robe River limonite deposits are the largest of this type known and can be traced for approximately 130 miles along the old stream, over 30 sq. miles of limonite remnants remaining at the present time.The present quantity of limonite in this system alone is probably in excess of 5,000,000,000 tons, and the original quantity must have exceeded four times this tonnage when allowance is made for erosion.Some thousands of millions of tons of this material contain in excess of 54 per cent Fe, with approximately 10 per cent combined water. The chief impurities are SiO2 and Al2O3, and minor elements are not present in objectionable amounts. A portion of these deposits was extensively tested by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (the B.H.P. Co. Ltd.) during 1962-1964. Most of the data presented in this paper are based on the work done on these deposits which are typical of those discussed. The overall problem of the origin of the limonite is discussed. It is apparent that the limonite originates from the jaspilitesof Archaean and Proterozoic age which form the highlands at the upstream ends of the deposits. The corrosion of aluminosilicate refractories by soda from three different sources has been studied by microscopic methods. Sodium sulphate from oil ash, sodium chloride used in glazing structural clay products, and sodium borate from borax-impregnated wood ash have fundamentally the same effect on the refractories. The soda is the chief medium of reaction and fluxing, the sulphur, chlorine, and boron being volatized as sulphuric, hydrochloric, and boric acids.INTRODUCTIONBecause of their strong fluxing action, alkalis are one of the main causes of corrosion and slagging of refractories.The action of potash and soda on refractories follows somewhat similar lines, although it is common for one alkali to be greatly in excess of the other. The course of the reaction in a number of cases of alkali attack has been studied by microscopic and chemical methods. For example, the action of potash on blast furnace refractories was studied by Kraner (1942) and Rigby and Richardson (1947), who described the occurrence of various potassium aluminium silicates. Its action on cement kiln refractories was described by Brisbane, Segnit, and Weymouth (1957). The action of soda on glass tank refractories has been studied by many people, for example Bisby (1956) and Resch (1954). Transportation cost is the dominant cost and accounts for almost half of the total mining cost in surface mining. Therefore, determining transportation cost is critically important for the economic feasibility of mining projects. Turkey produces around 85 million tons of lignite per annum. The biggest state-owned company, Turkish Coal Enterprises (TKI), accounts for 43 per cent of the country?s total lignite production. Around 85 per cent of the produced lignite is used in power plants for electricity generation and 15 per cent is used for domestic heating in cities and urban areas. On behalf of the Turkish government, TKI distributes around 2 Mt of lignite annually, at no cost to poor needy families countrywide in accordance with Social Assistance and Solidarity Funding aid. Subcontractors are utilized for lignite transportation, and conflicts arise due to the different transportation cost calculations at different mines. A robust model that provides unbiased cost estimations is therefore of paramount importance. This paper presents the transportation cost estimation software, NAKMAL, that has been developed for estimating the transportation cost of lignite from the mine face, including excavation and loading, to various final destination points through five different transportation scenarios. NAKMAL was designed using VisualStudio.NET, validated using field data and some case studies, and it is currently being used by TKI for calculation of transportation cost country-wide.

Dust control in longwall coal mining depends primarily on the prevention of dust at the source and secondarily on the suppression of airborne dust. One of the primary methods for the prevention of dust is the wetting of the coal face prior to extraction, which can be achieved with water spray systems installed on the shield supports. The spray droplets must travel across the airway to the longwall face, where high ventilation air speeds can entrain water droplets and prevent them from reaching the face thus minimizing the dust control at the source. Through an evaluation of spray plume characteristics in a wind tunnel, the droplet size and droplet drift behavior was determined. This drift behavior was examined by evaluating the spray plume concentration drop and the droplet size shift near the nozzle exit at varying air speeds. Based on these evaluations, CFD modeling was applied to simulate the spray behavior for varying geometries. These results led to the selection of appropriate spray nozzles capable of carrying water droplets to the face at higher air speeds, resulting in an adequate wetting of the coal face and reduced dust generation.

The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) Mine is PT Freeport Indonesia's (PTFI) newest operation. Production at the mine began in September 2000. The DOZ Mine produces 25 kt/d (27,500 stpd) using mechanized block cave mining methods. The DOZ Mine has several major improvements when compared with previous block cave mines in the district. It has an independent and improved ventilation system, a flexible and efficient truck haulage system, and a more reliable crushing and conveying system. PTFI's copper and gold mining complex is located in the Ertsberg mining district in Irian Jaya, Indonesia (Fig. 1). The Ertsberg district is located in the Sudirman Mountains at elevations from 3,000 to 4,500 m (9,800 to 14,700 ft) above sea level. The topography is extremely rugged and rainfall in the mine area averages 3,000 mm/a (118 in./year). Freeport began production in the district in 1972 when the mill began processing ore from the Ertsberg openpit. Underground mining began in 1980 when the Gunung Bijih Timur-Ertsberg East (GBT) Mine was brought online using block caving methods. In 1991, the GBT Mine reached a maximum production rate of 28 kt/d (31,000 stpd). Ore from the mine was exhausted in 1994. The Intermediate Ore Zone (IOZ) was brought into production in 1994. It, too, used block caving methods and had a design rate of 10 kt/d (11,000 stpd). The IOZ is currently producing at a rate of 21 kt/ d (23,000 stpd). The DOZ was discovered in the mid-1980s by deep drilling from the GBT. The GBT, IOZ and DOZ deposits are all situated in the Ertsberg East Skarn System (EESS). In 1993, the first of several studies was completed that indicated that portions of the DOZ Mine could be economically mined using block caving methods. Limited development was started in 1995. Full-scale development and construction began in late 1997. The crusher and conveying system began operating during the first quarter 2000. The first of two main exhaust shafts has been com¬missioned, along with three of the four new main fans. The second exhaust shaft and fourth main fan will be in service by the end of 2001. Undercutting and production began in September 2000. The DOZ Mine will reach its design production rate of 25 kt/d (27,500 stpd) in 2003. A study is under way to determine if an ultimate production rate of 35 kt/d (38,500 stpd) is feasible.

Cong., Rep. of the 17th Sess., Moscow-Leningrad, 1937, vol. 1, Moscow, 1939, pp. 241-250. Geophysical methods have been used in the U.S.S.R. to study geological problems. Such is the case of the general magnetometric and gravimetric surveys made jointly by the Main Physical Observatory, Main Office of Geodesy and Cartography, Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, and Main Office of Geophysical Prospecting. Some institutions supplied the data, others processed them. Geological interpretation was made by the author. (1) Regional magnetic anomalies in the plains of the U.S.S.R. are traceable to the folded substratum overlain by sedimentary rocks; these anomalies promise to yield data characterizing the substratum in respect to strike and depth. Anomalies in European U.S.S.R. suggest that the pre-Cambrian -substratum of the East European plateau consists of elements of different ages. In the most ancient of them, the main strike of the folding is almost latitudinal; in the younger ones, the folding is oriented in the meridian. (2) The Faye and Bouguer gravity anomalies are caused primarily by differences in the density of rocks composing the upper crust and by unknown processes producing changes of density at depth; these processes are not connected with isosiatic movements. The anomalies in the European and adjoining Asiatic U.S.S.R. promise to indicate the volume of the pre-Cambrian massif of the east-European plateau and to clarify the interrelations between the Ural, Tian-Shan, and Donetz Basin folding systems, as well as between the Dnieper-Donetz depression and the mid-European depression. - V. Nearly thirty two million tons of municipal solid wastes (MSW) are combusted annually in over one hundred U.S. Waste-to-Energy (WTE) power plants, thus reducing the use of fuel oil by about 1.6 billion gallons of fuel oil. One of the advanced WTE processes is the 0.9-million ton/y SEMASS facility at Rochester. Mass. Most of the combustion in the three giant combustion chambers occurs while the injected shredded wastes are in suspension, i.e .? in flash combustion mode. The velocity. temperature, and concentration profiles in the SEMASS combustion chamber were simulated by representing the combustible fraction of MSW by the simplified formula C6HIO04 and using the CFD program Fluent to solve the turbulent energy and mass transport equations. After validation against plant data. this model will be used to examine options for increasing the productivity of WTE combustion chambers, such as optimum distribution of primary and secondary air and oxygen enrichment.

Soda roasting of concentrates from Mouat, Montana, was performed in a temperature range of 450 to 650 degrees C and chromium was solubilised by water leaching at room temperature. It was found that high extraction yields of chromium were primarily dependent on the conversion of Cr3+ to Cr6+ during the roasting step, and this was enhanced significantly by simple attrition of chromite particles during this step. Gangue impurities (mainly Si) were more detrimental to Cr extraction than lattice impurities such as Al or Mg. It appears that oxidation proceeds into grains along a preferred crystallographic plane in the cubic lattice of the chromite. "The St. Lawrence deposit is a large wollastonite skarn (ca. 9 Mt @ 41.3% wollastonite) adjoining the gabbroic-to-syenitic Leo Lake pluton in the granulite facies Frontenac Terrane of the Grenvillian Central Metasedimentary Belt. It occurs within a horseshoeshaped horizon of quartzite, open to the east. The skarn extends over 1.2 km2, and comprises wollastonite-dominant, wollastonite-clinopyroxene, and diverse quartz-feldspar-sulphide (-titanite) layers, interbanded with, and strongly folded within, the quartzite. As in the world-class wollastonite deposits of the Willsboro district, New York, no carbonate protolith is preserved, and calcite is a negligible constituent of the mineralized zones. Wollastonite development is nonetheless ascribed to metasomatism of a metacarbonate unit by magmatogene, silica-rich, CO2-poor (XCO2 < 0.05) fluids, at P = 350 MPa and ca. 560°C, or, alternatively, 550 MPa and ca. 630°C.Several high-grade zones, averaging >40% but locally exceeding 80%, of translucent, white, tabular wollastonite grains, with lengths of 0.2 cm to 5 cm, have been delimited by drilling. Preliminary beneficiation studies yield high aspect-ratio and high-purity (low Fe and Mn) concentrates.St. Lawrence compares favourably to other known prospects and operating wollastonite deposits: having good chemical and physical properties, low iron content, and high aspect ratios (>20:1). In addition, the deposit has a favourable size and location, and will benefit from a low Canadian dollar. Canada currently has no wollastonite production."

"The material breakage induced by high energy electric discharges is known in general as electric impulse technology. This technology can be used for processing solid materials, such as rocks and ores. The electric impulse technology has been around for about 60 years, originally developed and intensively investigated by Russian researchers. However, the application fields have been limited to research and laboratory scale projects. Currently, there are new attempts to transfer this technology into practical industrial applications. Practical examples include drilling of deep geothermal wells with an electric impulse driven drill-head. Traditional comminution implies high energy consumption, hence, high costs. The Electric Impulse Technology is interesting for comminution of mineral and complex ores since it could allow improved recovery and energy reduction, thus resulting in significant savings. Another advantage is the dust free processing, which contributes to make minerals processing environmentally friendly. The use of electrical comminution for processing complex ores is investigated within the ELIZE research project funded by the BMBF (project No. 033R161 A) and industrial partners. The main objective is the development of an industrial scale electrical comminution machine. The first development stages include the investigation and characterization of the electric impulse induced weakening on rocks and ores. The characterization results of the preliminary trials at the microstructural scale on granite, skarn and greisen will be presented and discussed in this article. INTRODUCTION The pioneer work in the area of electric impulse technology was conducted by Russian researchers about 60 years ago [1]. While there have been some successful attempts to transfer this technology into practical applications, such as rock processing [2], laboratory processing of mineral ores [3–5], recycling [5] and geothermal drilling [6–9], the jump into practical industrial large scale application has not been accomplished yet. The Institute of Mineral Processing Machines of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg currently leads a project which can be seen as the next logical step for the technology transfer to industrial applications, namely, the development of continuously operating complex ore processing machines based on the electric impulse technology."

Defining the Risks The bad news is peak commodities, energy and economic crisis and stock markets collapsing are the issues that are already hitting everyone?s bottom line and draining the treasuries of every mining company around the world. Higher energy costs are affecting the bottom line more than ever before, which is creating more risk for companies. Mining companies have major land positions around the world and they have major energy needs. Uncontrollable increases in energy costs, increased regulations for diesel fuel emissions and energy intermittencies are costing mining companies more time, money, and man-power, which are cutting into profits and hitting the balance sheet. The good news is, there are practical energy solutions which are off the grid, tried and true methods which can be implemented in a cost-effective manner and will increase profitability and save shareholder values as well as energy security for these companies and their projects. To date, most of the mining resource industry has not yet considered or used other forms of power like clean, sustainable, or alternative energy for their own energy needs. The reasons have primarily been pushback from the mining industry due to beliefs of older technologies in alternative energy, a lack of understanding of the cost advantages long term, and perceptions of environmental relativity.

ABSTRACT: Ground stresses are one of the significant factors in the context of rockbursts and underground instability at some hard rock mines in Canada. Overcoring strain relief measurements using triaxiaI strain eel is were performed at depths between 60 to 1890 m at several mine sites to provide stress data for stability analysis and optimum mine design. Pre-mining ground stress determinations from 64 stress tensor analyses resulted in the following average stress gradients: Maximum horizontal stress. -Hmax - 8.18 - 0.0122 MPa/m depth Minimum horizontal stress. _-,,min - 3.64 - 0.0276 MPa/m depth Average horizontal stress. -11, 5.91 - 0.03-19 MPs m depth Vertical stress. &apos;-, - 0.0266 - 0.008 MPa/m depth The maximum and minimum horizontal compressive stresses. with an average ratio of 1.75 ,0..45. prevail in east--west and northerly directions. respectively. Horizontal compressive stresses in excess of vertical overburden load were determined. indicating large variations in ratios to a depth of about 1000 m with decreasing trend towards depth. From present data. a particular regional zoning for the magnitude and direction of horizontal stress fields cannot be outlined. A common feature at mines with near vertical orebodies is that the maximum horizontal compressive stress acts perpendicular to strike while the minimum horizontal compressive stress is aligned on-strike. The vertical stress components approach the gravitational overburden load.

The lamellar-dendritic transition in Sn-Pb alloys near the eutectic composition has been studied at high growth rates. Lamellar structures were found over a substantial range of tin-rich compositions, and this range extended to increasingly tin-rich concentrations as growth rate increased. These results are discussed in terms of stability and competitive-growth arguments. Various experimental and structural limitations to the rate of directional solidification are discussed. The rate of heat removal at the heat sink is the major experimental limitation. ReCENT interet1,2 in the use of fine composite structures produced by directional solidification of eutectic alloys makes it important to determine the range of composition and growth conditions that yield such microstructures. Because increasing growth velocities produce increasingly finer microstructures, it is particularly significant to determine the factors limiting the rate of solidification. Mollard and Flemings3 have shown that composite structures, free of primary dendrites, can be obtained in Sn-Pb alloys of off-eutectic composition. The composition range of composite structures was found to increase with increasing values of G/V, where G is the temperature gradient and V is the growth velocity. These results are in good quantitative agreement with an analysis of the stability of a planar eutectic interface.4 This analysis specifically predicts that over a small range of compositions stable lamellar structures will be obtained even for G/V = 0, hence, even at very high growth rates. The lamellar-dendritic transition in Sn-Pb alloys has also been analyzed with a model based on competitive growth between dendrites and the composite structure.576 This treatment, based on earlier work on organic eutetics,7 predicts that the composition range yielding composite structures in Sn-Pb will increase rapidly at high growth rates. An increase in the composition range of composite structures at high growth rates was recently observed in Cu-Pb alloys near the monotectic composition.8 In view of these results, and the predictions of the stability and competitivegrowth analyses, it was decided to study the lamellar-dendritic transition in Sn-Pb alloys at high growth rates. EXPERIMENTAL Using 99.999 pct pure materials, a series of Sn-Pb alloys were prepared containing 16.8 at. pct to 27.6 at. pct lead. (Eutectic composition is 26.1 at. pct Pb.) Ingots were extruded to 0.175 in. rod, and some rod was drawn to 0.070-in. wire. Directional solidification was accomplished in two different ways, Fig. 1. For growth rates up to 2 x 10-1 cm per sec, a 0.175 in. diam sample was placed in a graphite crucible 5 in. long with 0.250 in. OD and 0.035 in. walls. Samples were melted under flowing argon in a vertical, platinum-wound furnace, and solidified by driving the crucible downwards through a \ in. hole in a water-cooled copper toroid, Fig. l(a). An insulated chromel-alumel thermocouple was imbedded in the center of a representative sample, and moved with the sample during solidification. The local temperature is plotted against the distance travelled by the sample in Fig. 2. As the growth rate increased, the solid-liquid interface moved closer to the water-cooled toroid and the temperature gradient increased. At growth rates above 10-1&apos; cm per sec, heat was not removed fast enough and the sample moved into the toroid in the liquid state. The curve for V = 2 x 10-1 cm per sec shows a plateau caused by incomplete removal of latent heat from the interface, a problem which will be discussed later. To improve the heat removal, the toroid was cooled by nitrogen gas precooled in liquid nitrogen. This allowed successful solidification at rates up to 2 x 10-1cm per sec. Higher solidification rates required still more effective heat removal. Samples 0.070 in. in diam were placed in graphite tubes 0.125 in. in diam with 0.020 in. walls. Instead of cooling by sliding contact with a cooled toroid, these thinner samples were sprayed or directly immersed into water, Fig. l(b). After solidification, samples were stored in liquid nitrogen until they could be examined metallographic-ally. The surface was prepared with a diamond-knife microtome, followed by a light etch. The presence or absence of tin dendrites, Fig. 3, or lead dendrites, Fig. 4, was noted by optical microscopy, usually of a transverse section near the center of the sample. Replicas of the surface were prepared and examined in an electron microscope to resolve the fine lamellar structures, Fig. 5. The structures observed at various compositions and growth rates are summarized in Fig. 6. Composite structures were observed at increasingly cin-rich compositions as growth rate increased. This transition from dendritic to composite structure with increasing growth rate was also demonstrated by solidifying half a sample at a slow rate and then suddenly increasing the growth rate by lifting the furnace and quenching the sample with a water spray. A longitudinal section of this sample, Fig. 7, shows that the tin dendrites, which extended ahead of the slow-moving composite interface, were bypassed by the composite when the growth rate was increased. The range of composite structures at high growth rates was limited by the appearance of primary lead dendrites on the tin-rich side of the eutectic composition. A seismic monitoring network has been installed in western Colorado (USA) in the vicinity of three underground coal mines to (i) distinguish and characterize seismic activity as either mining related or naturally occurring, (ii) implement a real-time event monitoring and notification tool, and (iii) collect data for use in research studies aimed at quantifying impacts from mining-related and natural seismicity. These potential impacts include dynamic rock mass failures such as coal bumps as well as strong shaking in the vicinity of critical structures such as impoundment dams, reservoirs, mine seals, mine openings, and steep slopes. Examples of two damaging seismic events are presented and the mining and geologic factors attending these dynamic failures are described.
