Canadian mining giant Teck Resources Ltd. will be the exclusive supplier of the metals used in the production of the more than 1,000 medals to be awarded at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Teck, the diversified resource company headquartered in Vancouver, B.C., is providing 2.05 kg (4.5 lbs) of gold, 1,950 kg (4,300 lbs) of silver and 903 kg (2,000 lbs) of copper sourced from its operations around the world. In addition to the raw materials mines, this year?s medals will make Olympic history as they will be the first to contain metals recovered from processing the circuit boards from end-of-life electronics (e-waste) that would have otherwise been destined for a landfill. After mining or production through a variety of smelting and recovery processes, each metal has been refined to enhance the metal purity.

Copper-15 Nickel-8 Tin alloy is a relatively modern material, having been discovered in the 1970’s. It has complexities with casting, hot working and interdependent solid state phase transformations. A key to the high reliability manufacture of wrought rods, bars, plates and tube is the casting technology, which limits segregation, promotes microstructural uniformity and enables hot working. The EquaCast® continuous casting process has enabled the production of a broadening variety of wrought forms with typical yield strengths ranging from 100 to 180 ksi (690 to 1241 MPa) depending on size, shape and temper. This paper reviews the characteristics of wrought Copper-15 Nickel-8 Tin products which have registration in AMS specifications (4596 and 4597) and MMPDS-04 (CN-1) for use in aircraft. The design limits, microstructures, fracture characteristics and tribological behavior will be examined. This alloy system is emerging as a material of choice for aircraft bearings, corrosion resistant oil and gas exploration components, machinery and demanding off-road equipment applications. ToughMet® 3 is an alternative or upgrade to conventional moderate and high strength aluminum bronze bearing alloys.

The large diameter caisson foundations and their construction methods for three 50 to 60 storey high buildings in Singapore are described. The caissons are 5 m to 8 m in diameter and 40 m to 100 m deep, excavated either by hand or mechanised excavators or by drilling and blasting. Performance of the 50 storey DBS Building is described.

Manufacture of aluminum foams still suffer from nonuniformity and poor reproductively for there is lack of basic knowledge of foaming process. In this paper, carbon fibers are used as novel stabilizing additive for aluminum foams, and the structure evolution of aluminum foams with different fiber content was studied. A laser rangefinder was used to detect the expansion rate of different al foams. Al foam samples are solidified at different foaming time to determine its relative density and cell size distribution. Results indicate that the cell size of foams linearly increases with the decrease of density, and the slope of the line is influenced by fiber content. The relationship between expansion ratio, density and cell size of the foams is discussed. It is concluded that the density of resulting foam is influenced by the rate of gravity driven drainage, and its cell size is determined by expansion ratio and foaming time.

A wide range of drill holes and process streams are sampled for resource estimation, grade control, and contractual purposes in the minerals industry. However, despite the availability of training courses, conferences and both national and international standards on correct sampling practices, it is still surprising how often little attention is given to ensuring that representative samples are collected for analysis. The reason for this is that the responsibility for sampling is often entrusted to personnel who do not appreciate the significance and importance of sampling, with cost being the main driving force rather than whether the sample is representative of the material from which it was extracted. This seriously undermines the precision and accuracy of the analyses subsequently generated and can render the analysis process a total waste of time and money and expose mining companies to serious, potential, financial losses. Company management needs to reverse this situation and ensure that sampling is given the attention it deserves to generate representative samples for analysis.

The Bakal (South Ural, Russia) deposit of iron ore bearing iron carbonate (siderite) with the capacity of more than 1 billion tones belongs to the MMK. This ore cannot be fully processed via blast furnace technology because of high content of MgO. According to the investigations carried out in the USA and Japan in 1999-2004 the ITmk3 (Ironmaking Technology mark three) RHF technology is a breakthrough in Ironmaking. Four iron ore types (hematite, magnetite, high and low Al2O3/SiO2) were tested. Reduction, melting and slag removal can be achieved in just 10 min. The main objective of the investigation is to establish optimum operation conditions for the production of iron nuggets from iron carbonate bearing ore via the ITmk3 by means of the lab scale testing. Samples of iron ore and carbon reductant were chemically and physically analyzed. Green pellets were processed via a lab tube furnace to simulate RHF conditions. The nuggets and slag were chemically analyzed. This preliminary test work provides valuable information which may be used for large-scale testing in a commercially sized RHF.

Titania slag is used as feedstock in the production of titanium dioxide pigment. It (titania slag) is the product of ilmenite smelting,a process whereby ilmenite is reduced at high temperature utilizing anthracite as a reducing agent. Although various slag tapping configurations are employed throughout the ilmenite smelting industry, the method of tapping the slag from the furnace into bell shaped cast steel pots, was the subject of investigation in this study. The paper describes the formulation of a cooling model used to calculate and subsequently predict the temperature profile of a slagblock during its cooling within the various cooling environments of pot cooling, air cooling and water cooling. The model was calibrated against actual internal slag temperature measurements and verified with information obtained from both pilot and industrial scale blocks. The paper concludes with solidification results and their practical implication.

Approximately 800 private consulting engineering firms in America specialize in geotechnical engineering. The gross income from these firms totals about $500 to $600 million per year. Sixty-five to seventy-five percent of this geotechnical work is per­formed by consulting engineers that belong to the Association of Soil and Foundation Engineers (ASFE). This paper presents statistics concerning the business activities and functions provided by ASFE member firms. The procedures used in typical projects are described. The paper concludes with a summary of major trends which are impacting the American geotechnical practice today.

The crack propagation behaviour of Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube material was studied through comparison of the measured behaviour with the predicted response from finite element analysis. Three-dimensional finite element simulations of compact tension specimens were performed using the crack tip opening angle as a fracture criterion to allow for crack propagation. To obtain reasonable agreement with the measured behaviour, it was important to capture both the anisotropic plastic deformation behaviour of the Zr-2.5Nb material through use of the Hill-48 yield criterion and damage due to void growth, nucleation, and coalescence through the use of a Gurson-based constitutive model in the simulations.

The effect of grinding media performance on milling and operational behaviour was demonstrated under different selected conditions of calcium carbonate slurry milling. A variety of grinding media materials and bead sizes, along with two different stirrer tip speeds, were used in the grinding process to generate a particle size reduction of the calcium carbonate (CaCO3). To determine the optimum milling parameters the collected test data were used to calculate and evaluate specific energy as well as stress intensity under different milling conditions. The efficiency by which an applied load is transmitted through the composite structure depends on the strength of the interface between the matrix and the second phase. In fiber reinforced composites, the interfacial shear stress plays a major role in the composite capacity to support the applied load. This interfacial stress can be obtained by means of pullout tests using the fiber embedded to a certain length in a socket of the matrix material. In the present work, pullout tests were performed to evaluate the interfacial shear stress of ramie, a relatively strong natural fiber, reinforcing polyester matrix composites. The general result permitted to calculate a critical length for the ramie fiber embedded in polyester resin. From this critical length, the value of the interfacial shear stress was calculated. An interpretation of this result together with SEM observation displayed a relatively weak bond between the ramie fiber and the polyester matrix.

Previous research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines demonstrated that nonionic surfactants increased the leaching rate of copper in the flask leaching of chalcopyrite with ferric sulfate if sufficient ferric sulfate was present. This research was continued by the Bureau in Part 2 to further explore the application of nonionic surfactants to the dump leaching of chalcopyrite. A polyoxyethylene lauryl ether was selected as the superior nonionic surfactant tested at 25° and 50° C. The addition of the surfactant increased copper leaching by 116 pct at 25° C and 1.0 pct solids and by 61 pct at 50° C and 0.5 pct solids at Fe 3+ concentrations greater than 1 g/L. At 0.1.0 g/L Fe 3+ and below, the addition of the surfactant produced as much as a 35 pct decrease in leaching. Each of the nonionic surfactants studied was found to be heavily adsorbed by a typical chalcopyrite ore, which poses a serious barrier to the application of nonionic surfactants in an actual chalcopyrite dump.

The hydraulic turbine blade of the matensitic stainless steel (Cr13%,Ni5%,Mo1%) is a kind of large and curved shape, which is susceptible to deformation in both casting and heat treatment processes. The coupling analysis of heat transfer, phase transformation and stress in heat treatment process of the turbine blade for Three Gorges Project is carried out by using Deform-3D software. Its temperature fields, phase fields and stress fields in heat treatment process are obtained. And its deformation is predicted. In the cooling process of normalizing, the blade exhibits relatively large deformation. Based on the stress analysis and deformation prediction in heat treatment process, an algorithm for the determination of reverse deformation of the blade casting in heat treatment process is presented. And the reverse deformation distribution of blade is obtained.

The void growth and coalescence in model materials involving a pre-existing three dimensional void array (i.e. multiple layers of a void array) was studied by X-ray computed tomography (XCT) coupled with in situ tensile deformation. To reduce the recording time, a new technique called fast tomography was employed. The model materials used in this paper were fabricated by the combination of an ultra-short pulsed laser machining system and a diffusion bonding technique, and two different types of arrays were prepared namely, FCC 1 and FCC 2 type array. This methodology allowed the authors to capture the entire process of growth and coalescence events of a void array embedded in the metal matrix. The failures in the both materials involved internal necking and shear localization. One of the highlights of this paper is that the plastic strain at the onset of void coalescence was measured for each model material. These values are in fact the adequate values to be compared with the coalescence strain predicted by existing void coalescence models such as the Brown and Embury model, the Thomason model and the Pardoen and Hutchinson model. The comparison suggested that the Brown and Embury model underestimated the coalescence in neither of the current model materials, while the Thomason model and the Pardoen and Hutchinson model showed a quite good agreement with the result for FCC 1 material. On the other hand the result from FCC 2 material agreed with none of the models probably due to the geometry of the void array that is not compatible with the existing models.

This study was undertaken to generate a locally relevant guideline for the socio-economic aspects of mine closure for South African closure practitioners and decision makers. It should also represent a resource for interested and involved stakeholders. Mine closure, and its related post-closure social, environmental and economic characteristics, is part of the lifecycle of mining operations, given the finite nature of the ore resource. Many coal mines are anticipated to close in the next ten to fifteen years in Mpumalanga, as the epicentre of the industry shifts towards the Waterberg. Social aspects of mine closure have been historically underplayed, and under researched. Coaltech thus commissioned two studies, the first of which examined the closure dynamics of 36 mines in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal in 2006. A follow-up study (July 2007) focusing on Mpumalanga3,4 confirmed some of the results of the first study. It also contained broad guidelines for mine closure covering social and labour planning, job creation, the use of mine infrastructure, developmental incentives, and environmental rehabilitation.

Imposing a strong magnetic field is considered to be an attractive method to prepare materials with aligned or textured structures due to its intrinsic properties, e.g. non-contact and easily controllable. However, the nature of the strong magnetic field effect still remains unclear and further research is needed. In the present paper, the effect of a strong magnetic field on the solidification of a hypereutectic Al-Cu alloy was investigated. After magnetic field treatment, the primary phase was aligned parallel to the magnetic field direction. Meanwhile, the eutectic micro-structural constituent became elongated and thinner. A theoretical analysis was conducted to have a better understanding of the phenomena. During solidification, the magnetic Faraday and dipole-dipole interaction forces are considered to decrease the solute pile-up in front of the solid-liquid interface and modify the eutectic cell formation. The alignment of the phase is due to the shape magnetic anisotropy and crystal magnetic anisotropy.

With point protection, piles can be driven through boulders, layered rock, garbage dumps, and waterfront debris to provide dependable support for all types of structures. Splicers for pipe piles can be tapered for a water-tight drive-fit that does not require welding. The pipe splicer can be made applicable to precast concrete piles. Splicers for H make the long pile as strong as an unspliced length with only simple welding. Transition splicers quickly connect different types or sizes into efficient composite piles.

Heavy metals and sulphates in acid mine drainage (AMD) can beadsorbed onto bentonite clay, leaving clean water and a heavy metal loaded clay precipitate as products. Due to the toxicity of heavy metals, the clay could not be disposed of safely in the past. A method was thus required to remove the heavy metal content from the clay. Acid leaching was proposed to liberate the heavy metals from the loaded clay. Sulphuric, nitric and hydrochloric acid were considered as lixiviants. Loaded clay samples were leached over a range of pH values from 1 to 3.5 to identify an optimum leaching condition. From the results it was found that metals can berecovered from loaded bentonite clay by means of acid leaching and the optimum pH for heavy metal liberation was found to be 2.5, with uranium as an exception, being optimally leached at a pH of 3. This allows for the possibility of selective leaching. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction analyses indicated that the clay structure did not deteriorate significantly during acid leaching, suggesting that the bentonite could be reused. The treatment of AMD with bentonite clay, and subsequent acid leaching of the clay, is a sustainable solution, and current outcomes could possibly lead to industrial implementation of the process during water purifying and metal recovery from waste streams. Use of vehicles with electric drive, which could reduce our oil dependence, will depend on lithium-ion batteries. But is there enough lithium? Will we need to import it from a new cartel? Are there other materials with supply constraints? We project the maximum demand for lithium and other materials if electric-drive vehicles expanded their market share rapidly, estimating material demand per vehicle for four battery chemistries. Total demand for the United States is based on market shares from an Argonne scenario that reflects high demand for electric-drive vehicles, and total demand for the rest of the world is based on a similar International Energy Agency scenario. Total material demand is then compared to estimates of production and reserves, and the quantity that could be recovered by recycling, to evaluate the adequacy of supply. We also identify producing countries to examine potential dependencies on unstable regions or future cartels.
