The proper transfer of roof loads from props and bolts to ribs and pillars can result in appreciable savings. The author shows how to plan such load reduction in underground mines. For openings in bedded rocks, analyzed by simple beam theory, it has been shown that roof loads can be shifted from one support to another.&apos; This transfer is effected by controlling the relative deflection of adjacent supports. If this action is used to reduce loads in the props or bolts and increase them in the ribs or pillars, it could be productive of economies averaging 30 pct. Such savings can be realized by: 1) using smaller artifical supports such as props and bolts, and 2) increasing loads in the rib to induce eventual failure for longwall caving. Since the rib is relatively load-insensitive, it provides a natural load sink. However, caution must be used in applying such permissive deflections, for while the supports are being handled properly, the stresses in the roof itself are very sensitive to such manipulations.1 An underground opening overlain by a relatively thin immediate roof, and a thick main roof, is usually laid out as shown in Fig. 1. The total open span (T) between pillars or ribs is calculated on the basis of the main roof, and the secondary spans (L) on the basis of the immediate roof, so that a complete accounting of the existing loads is made. For this purpose the immediate roof is treated as a uniformly loaded continous beam, which is an indeterminate structure as shown in Fig. 2(A). The term systematic supports places the following two restrictions on the continuous beam: 1) Spans between all supports are equal: uniformity of spans. 2) Loads on all supports (excepting ribs) are equal: uniformity of supports. The usual mode of analysis of such a structure by beam theory is to divide it up into a series of simply supported beams with end moments as shown in Fig. 2(B)2 The problem now is to transfer a maximum roof load to the rib from the span immediately adjacent to it by permitting its support to deflect, and yet not fail the roof. Once this has been done, the load can be equalized on all other supports by permitting further degrees of relative deflection. It is necessary, therefore, to determine an expression for the constant load on each support, and the required deflections, in terms of properties of the roof. Mining planning and mineral processing are almost two unconnected areas. The mining area builds its economical models considering the plant like a constant parameter: a constant throughput, an average recovery and a unitary cost. On the other hand, the mineral processing area assumes a mine plan with grades, ore type, work index, estimating the performances in an independent way. Previous researches have evaluated the advantage for increasing throughput by increasing the liberation size, thus sacrificing recovery. These valuables approaches have left behind the work index factor, critical variable for Recovery-Throughput capacity estimation. This study describes a method combining mineral processing and mining planning. This method incorporates the grinding and flotation performances into the mining economic models optimizing simultaneously the Throughput- Wi(Work index)- Recovery relations with mining sequence, cut-off strategies, and reserve schedules. This method has been used at Andina Mine Chile, showing 18% net present value increasing with minimum investment associated.

In a previous paper the author showed that silver considerably delayed the recrystallisation of lead after cold work. The effect of antimony on the rate of recrystallisation of distorted lead was studied next, and the experiments performed, and the results obtained, are described in this paper. Electrolytic lead was used as a standard of comparison.It was also used to make the lead antimony alloys.This electrolytic lead contained 0.0005% total impurities.It was prepared from commercial lead by fire refining, followed by electrolysis and finally by vacuum casting. The process was described in the previous paper and the description need not be repeated here. PREPARATION OF LEAD - ANTIMONY ALLOYS.The steps taken to procure pure antimony are outlined in the appendix. To make the lead antimony alloys a mother alloy was prepared thus:-A quantity of the antimony (it was received in the powdered form) was placed in a pyrex glass tube, which was closed at one end. The antimony was washed with hot hydrochloric acid (1: 1), then with more dilute acid, then with distilled water, and finally with absolute alcohol; it was dried by warming and evacu,ating the tube. The tensile properties of DGEBA/TETA epoxy matrix composites reinforced with different amounts of curaua fibers were evaluated. Tensile specimens with up to 35% in volume of long, continuous and aligned curaua fibers were room temperature tested in an Instron machine. The fracture was analyzed by SEM. The results showed significant changes in the mechanical properties with the amount of curaua fibers. This was compared to other bend-tested composites with distinct matrices. The fracture analysis revealed a weak fiber/matrix interface, which could be responsible for the comparatively low performance of some properties.

A dump edge and vehicle proximity warning system is being developed at the Colorado School of Mines using GPS and wireless local area networks to improve the safety of off-highway trucks in open pit mines. After two years of research, software development, and testing in the laboratory, field tests are currently being carried out at operating limestone quarries and open pit mining operations to evaluate the effectiveness of the system under rugged operating conditions. This paper describes the progress made on this NIOSH-funded project and discuss, tests carried out recently, at the Morenci open pit copper mine in Arizona.

A New Ingersoll-Rand Turbo Blower The Ingersoll-Rand Co. has added to its Turbo Compressors and Blowers a low-pressure machine t o handle volumes from 3,000 to 35,000 cu. ft. per minute at from 1-2 ½ lb. These are particularly adapted to such service as foundry cupola blowing, atomizing oil for oil burners, supplying blast to heating and annealing furnaces of various kinds, blowing air for water-gas generators, pneumatic conveying and ventilating. They are of the single stage, double flow type and are furnished either electric motor, steam turbine or water wheel driven.

Remediation of the environmental (and social) disturbances caused by opencast brown coal mining in the past in north-west Bohemia isa priority for state environmental policy. In order to provide a concept for full restoration of land following disturbance by opencast mining, a special interdisciplinary project supported by a grant from the Czech Ministry of Environment was started in 2000. The initial stage of the project was intended to summarize and evaluate the findings and the works carried out in connection with various reclamation activities in the afflicted area over a period of more than 50 years. The main aims of the three-year project are to make use of the best available landscape environmental management knowledge in order to harmonize the ecological, aesthetic, productive and social functions of new valuable landscape, including the recovery of historical continuity and an understanding of ?landscape memory?. The basic landscape functions were assessed on two different scale levels. On a large scale, the relevant attributes were investigated over the whole area of the Sokolov brown coal basin (220 km2). The data and experience acquired were used to define large-scale guiding principles for the rehabilitation of a post-mining landscape. On a small scale, the basic characteristics and functions of the landscape were analysed in the Litov-Chlum model area (2 km2). The information derived from this analysis was used to formulate a small-scale approach for the rehabilitation of the model area and also to define general methodological principles. Enhanced gravity separation appears to be one of the most promising methods for processing all types of <200-µm coal feeds and tailings. Systems based on this technology are reviewed, and the results of investigations based on C900 Multi-Gravity Separator tests conducted to assess the treatment of <200-µm, extremely difficult-to-wash coal settling pond tailings are presented. Multi-Gravity Separator processing tests of ultra-fine tailings with a high clay particle size content (22.6% <10 µm and 60.1% <40 µm) and a 69.56% ash content show that this material can be effectively treated after desliming (<10 µm) of clay-size particles to produce a coal with a 20.6% ash at a separator combustible material recovery of 69.3%. Desliming is shown to be critical in reducing coal ash content and combustible material recovery. Similar improvements are anticipated in the recovery and separation pro-cesses for other enhanced gravity separation systems from the desliming of feeds. Although not a conventional form of treating Multi-Gravity Separator data, the existence of well-defined polynomial relationships based on the product of drum shake amplitude and shake frequency relative to product coal recovery, product ash content and yields at varying wash water flows is demonstrated. Low-amplitude and intermediate- to high-frequency bed agitation are shown to produce optimum ash reduction results.

"The Nyrstar Port Pirie Smelter, located on the eastern shore of the Upper Spencer Gulf in South Australia 230km north of Adelaide, began operation in 1889 to process lead concentrate from the Broken Hill lead and silver mines. The site still operates an updraft sinter machine, commissioned in 1955, with the product fed into a blast furnace. While sinter plant technology has changed and improved since 1955, development has reached the stage where further enhancements are not possible or economic. High purity lead concentrates command lower margins and for the smelter to remain economically viable a wider range of higher value materials must be treated. The current flowsheet cannot meet this demand. Additionally, community blood lead levels particularly in children below four years of age, are a critical indicator used to measure the site’s environmental performance. The smelter’s environmental licence to operate is dependent on meeting future community and regulatory expectations. To achieve this a major step change in the emission performance of the smelter is required. Since 2008 pre-feasibility work has been undertaken to develop a new flowsheet and business model to allow Port Pirie to operate sustainably into the future. The main requirements were for the smelter to reduce lead and sulfur dioxide emissions that impact on the local environment and community to meet current and future environmental expectations, as well as dramatically reducing current feed constraints and change the business case from a marginal business to a sustainable profitable business. After reviewing all practical options a decision was made to replace the sinter plant with an Outotec Top Submerged Lance (TSL) furnace. This paper describes how the new furnace technology was selected and how it will be integrated into the present flowsheet; the unique funding arrangements that are in place to deliver the redeveloped site; and future opportunities that are associated with the implementation of the new flowsheet. A longwall mining operation went under a tall, self-supporting and free-standing wireless communication transmission tower. In anticipation of that the ground subsidence process might affect the transmission tower, the mining company took a proactive approach to mitigate the expected subsidence influences. The efforts include prediction of surface subsidence process at the location of the tower, assessment of stability, structural integrity and functionality of the tower structures, and design and implementation of mitigation measures. The intension of this paper is to demonstrate the techniques that can be used to assess and mitigate the subsidence effects on tall self-supporting and free standing tower structures.

The injection of grouting compounds into the consolidated rock surrounding underground mine workings has long been practiced for the purpose of sealing against water flows. In more recent times however, grout injection has also found application for the purpose of rock mass reinforcement. Mines in Europe,America, Australia and elsewhere now make use of significant quantities of chemical grouts in both preventative and remedial strata control work. &nbsp; Despite the increasing usage of grouting for these purposes, there is limited knowledge about the effects of grout injection on the rock mass, and acceptance of the method is by no means universal. In some cases grouting has been applied with little understanding of the factors that control its effectiveness, and disappointing results have been obtained. &nbsp; This paper reviews the basic concepts of how grout injection may contribute to the control of rock surrounding underground mine excavations, and highlights the factors which may serve to limit the efficacy of the method and the uncertainties that complicate the appraisal of grouting as a method of strata control.

"The size of mills driven by ring-gear or by a gearless solution has significantly increased in the last years. This has created additional challenges for the driven equipment. The requirements for the mechanical devices and the power grid have become more demanding. Controlled soft starting and operation, especially in dual pinion mills, as well as the protection of the equipment has gained importance. The selection of the drive solution for the mill therefore becomes more critical. Besides the classical criteria such as performance, efficiency and capital costs other factors come in the evaluation of the system such as flexibility and optimization of operation, reliability and the ageing of the grinding equipment.Variable speed solutions offer significant advantages over conventional fixed speed drives due to their application specific features and process optimization capabilities, even for ball mills where these are not seen yet as a must.The initial capital costs are higher than some of the direct on-line solutions however the benefits for the operation during the lifetime of the mill generated by the use of converter solutions justify the additional higher investment.INTRODUCTIONThe method of powering mills such as AG, SAG and Ball has a long and technically interesting history. It can be said; almost every decade in the last half century had its own trend. The trend was dominated by the market demand, by the process development and requirement of the mechanical and the electrical technology but mostly by the price of the applied technology.All has started about 50 years ago with mill diameters less than 20 feet driven by fix speed synchronous or wound rotor motors with the power of about 2 MW. Around 10 years later, the mill sizes increased, but the necessary torque could not be transmitted by one pinion therefore dual pinion solutions were developed to power the mills. However, realization of the dual pinion solution was only possible when load could be evenly shared between the two pinions."

Residual aeolian placers (RAPs) are formed by the wind, by preferential entrainment and removal of small and low-density detritusfrom a pre-existing, typically sedimentary sequence containing heavy minerals. Heavy minerals that are resistant to chemical alteration and either soft and malleable (gold), or extremely hard (diamond, sapphire, ruby, etc), are concentrated as a residual on the wind deflation surface, typically in the interstices between larger resistant clasts. RAPs form preferentially in arid or semi arid areas, where the vegetation is sparse or absent, and where topography and surface gradients are low, but may also form on beaches and in periglacial environments. RAPs consist of a continuous or discontinuous, planar or gently undulating horizon of heavy minerals in a single-clast-thick pavement of resistant pebbles, cobbles, or boulders, which mantles the present topography or palaeo-topography. Extreme wind erosion and surface deflation may condense the full pre-existing sequence into a layer of heavy minerals only. The grade of RAPs is substantially higher than in the precursor deposit, and commonly much higher than those typically found in most other placer types. Aside from their general occurrence as a thin pavement of resistant clasts, the best indicators of residual aeolian gold placers are the presence of wind-eroded stones (ventifacts) on the pavement, and the distinctive and unique shapes of aeolian gold grains themselves. The shape of the gold grains is progressively transformed by sand blasting during placer development, from grains with thickened rims, to toroidal grains on which the rims are æsplitÆ and peened inward toward the grain centre on one or both of the grain sides, to hemispherical or sub-spherical grains that are fully encapsulated by the in-turned rims. Gold that has undergone aeolian shape transformation is difficult to entrain and transport away from the site of aeolian concentration by anything other than mass movement or glacial processes. It is also easily retained by commercial recovery plants of any configuration.

Zincite and spinel phases are present in the complex slag systems encountered in zinc/lead sintering and zinc smelting processes. These phases form extensive solid solutions and are stable over a wide range of compositions, temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. Accurate information on the stability of these phases is required in order to develop thermodynamic models of these slag systems. Phase equilibria in the Fe-Zn-O system have been experimentally studied for a range of conditions, between 900 and 1580°C and oxygen partial pressures (pO2) between air and metallic iron saturation, using equilibration and quenching techniques. The compositions of the phases were measured using Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). The ferrous and ferric bulk iron concentrations were determined using a specially developed wet-chemical analysis procedure based on the use of ammonium metavanadate. XRD was used to confirm phase identification. A procedure was developed to overcome the problems associated with evaporation of zinc at lowpO2s and to ensure the achievement of equilibria. An isothermal section of the system FeO-Fe2O3-ZnO at high ZnO concentrations at 1200°C was constructed. The maximum solubilities of iron and zinc in zincite and spinel phases in equilibrium were determined at pO2=1*10-6atm at 1200and 1300°C. The morphology of the zincite crystals sharply changes in air between 1200 and 1300°C from rounded to plate-like. This is shown to be associated with significant increase in total iron concentration, the additional iron being principally in the form of ferric iron. Calculations performed by Fact Sage with a thermodynamically optimized database have been compared with the experimental results. Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, auxiliary equipment, copper slag launders Pyromet has designed copper launders for tapping slag. What makes Pyromet?s launder design innovative and safe is that it does not have any cooling water channels underneath the launder runner, whilst achieving effective cooling of the runner. If matte burn-throughs were to occur through the launder runner, the risk of damaging water channels and the risk of explosions are reduced. In addition, since the cooling water channels are not harmed, the launder is easily repairable and reusable. Pyromet makes use of Finite Element Analysis to optimize the launder geometry to ensure that sufficient energy is removed from the centre of the launder. Factors considered during the launder design include the suitability of the geometry to the client?s needs, experience from existing installations, and ease of fabrication. Pyromet goes so far as to develop procedures for fabricators to ensure that fabrication issues do not compromise the functionality of the launder. When launder orders are received by Pyromet, the entire fabrication process and the functioning of the launders during operations are monitored to ensure that the launder designs are continuously improving with every installation.

"INTRODUCTION This paper is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines pertaining to an investigation on the use of stemming in metal mines now being conducted at the Mount Weather Testing Adit. Its purpose is to compare the amount of dust and gases produced as a result of blasting charges of dynamite (1) in drill holes, (2) in bombs, and (3) in mud-cap or adobe shots.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSValuable assistance and advice on stemming were given by members of the staff at the Bureau of Mines, as acknowledged in previous publications. 4/TEST PROCEDUREThe results used for comparison in this report are from dust and gas samples taken after blasting (1) four regular test rounds with no stemming, (2) five bomb shots, and (3) two mud-cap or adobe shots.The four rounds were the standard 26-hole test rounds designed to break 4 feet of rock. The procedure for drilling and blasting these rounds is described in Report of Investigations 3509.Before the regular test rounds were blasted, about 1,200 bounds of fine rock was placed on the steel mucking sheets that covered the end of the adit track; the wails, hack, and floor of the adit were washed thoroughly; and the fine rock on the mucking sheets was completely wetted.Each of the 5 bomb shots consisted of 10 sticks of dynamite tied together and hung at midpoint of the adit, 8 feet from the fall."

A two-dimensional multi-scale solidification model was developed to study the heat transfer, fluid flow, and grain growth occurring in the molten pool during the laser engineered net shaping (LENS) process. This model coupled the finite element method to calculate mass, energy and momentum transport in the macroscale with the cellular automaton technique to calculate liquid/solid phase change at the microscale. The validation of the model was performed by comparing the simulation results with experimental data from previously published works, showing good agreement in temperature distribution and the dendrite morphology (size and shape). The simulation results showed that Marangoni convection, caused by the temperature gradient along the pool surface, played a critical role in determining the flow pattern in the molten pool and exerted influence on the pool size and shape. It was also found that columnar dendrites can be formed, with dendrite arm spacings as fine as a few microns due to the high cooling rate during the LENS process. In addition, the influence of fluid flow on the dendrite growth in the pool was discussed.

Shaft sinking through an amphibolite-granite rock mass experienced rock bursts on the shaft walls and benches. However, rock burst phenomena was exhibited only in granite, which is e1asto-brittle with ability to store strain energy caused by orogenic and man made stresses. To improve ground conditions, blasting of destressing holes at shaft corners was carried out. By this technique rock burst during shaft sinking was minimized, but not eliminated.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an illustration of the Resource Management Act processes at their best. Many of you will be aware of the Martha Mine situated in the middle of Waihi Township in Hauraki District. Underground mining ceased on Martha Hill in the 1950s. A new mining licence was issued in the late 1980s and since that date open cast mining has continued at the site. The Hauraki District Council notified its proposed plan in October 1994. Prior to that date numerous discussion papers and draft sections of the plan had been disseminated in the community. Considerable consultation was undertaken with all interest groups. As an indication of the success of that consultation process only 17 references to the Environment Court were lodged following the making of decisions on submissions and further submissions. Those references, which included a number from the Minerals Industry, were all resolved by consent. Out of the reference and consent order process EMMA (Extended Martha Mineral Area) was born.

"A survey of 925 mineral property transactions worldwide was carried out between 1987 and 2004. These mineral properties with reported Mineral Resources include 457 gold properties, 322 base metal properties, and five platinum group element (PGE) properties. Based on constant Canadian dollars, the results of the survey indicate that:• In general, unit metal values in the ground (e.g. $/oz Au or $/lb Cu) have kept pace with the changes in the respective metal prices during the period of the survey.• A general decrease in unit gold values in the ground has occurred from about $57/oz Au in 1987 to about $11/oz Au in 2002 for Canadian mineral properties, with the exception of a peak of $58/oz Au in 1996.• A similar trend for mineral properties has occurred in the United States, but with lower unit values, in the range from $1/oz Au to $10/oz Au during the last three years of the survey. • Unit metal values in the ground for gold properties in Canada were higher than for those in the rest of the world.• Unit metal values in the ground for copper properties in Canada were in the mid-range compared with other countries in the rest of the world; the United States and Australia were higher and Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe were lower than in Canada.• Unit metal values in the ground for zinc properties in Canada were also in the mid-range compared with other countries in the rest of the world; Latin America and Europe were higher and the United States, Australia, and Asia were lower than in Canada.• Unit metal values for nickel properties in Canada were highest compared with other countries in the rest of the world, followed by the United States, Australia, Africa, and Asia.• Gold values in the ground in Canada have ranged from 6% to 14% (with an average of approximately 10%) of the gold price.• The unit values of base metals in the ground have been in the order of 2% of the quoted metal price, during the period of the survey."
