This paper is intended only to give a preliminary account of experiments made, and conclusions reached, concerning the treatment of certain refractory low-grade gold-ores, the profitable reduction of which may furnish a useful guide to the solution of similar mining and metallurgical problems, not only in the gold-bearing belt of the Southern United States, but perhaps in other regions also. It must be regarded as simply a " report of progress," preceding a more elaborate and conclusive report of regular practice. The mines of the Hillabee Gold Mining Co. are located upon what is generally known locally as Hog Mountain, on the northern edge of Tallapoosa county, Ala., about 15 miles from Goodwater and 14 miles from Alexander City, stations on the Central of Georgia railway. Gold has been known since 1839 to exist on this property, where it was discovered in that year by a man named Johnston. The property was worked for placer-gold by the old miners, and there are now the remains of four attempts to operate it by stamp-mill and plate-amalgamation. The present owners purchasid it in 1896, and since that time they have experimented at frequent intervals, in order to devise a process that would satisfactorily recover the gold. In 1903 regular operations were begun. Geologically, the mountain consists of an intrusion of what has been pronounced true granite in altered sedimentary slates. The cooling of the granite produced shrinkage-cracks, which have become veins. There is considerable question as to the period of the slate formation; but it is undoubtedly, in my opinion, of Carboniferous age. AN outstanding development in the field of education for the mineral industries during the past year has been an unprecedented eagerness by young men for college training in this field. The enrollment of students in the 53 mineral technology schools in the United States in 1936-'37 reached the all- time high of 7190. This represented an increase of 43 per cent in two years and was about ten per cent of all engineering students. Of these 7190 students only 980 graduated and were available - for positions in the industry. That the supply of graduates did not equal the demand can be substantiated by every school dean and by the personnel agents of many mining, metallurgical, and petroleum companies. The important permanent-magnet alloys 15 years ago contained carbon and depended upon it for their permanent-magnet properties. In recent years great advances have been made in a number of new alloys substantially free of carbon. These include Remalloy,' an alloy of iron, cobalt, and molybdenum, the various iron-nickel-aluminum alloys of the Mishima2 type, and the more recent Alnico V3 in which the best properties are developed by heat-treating in a magnetic field. The Mishima and the Alnico types of alloys are very brittle and after casting must be ground to size. This article describes a permanent-magnet material4 that can be machined as cast, and when handled with some care can be rolled to thin sheet and drawn to fine wire. Optimum magnetic properties are developed by a simple heat-treatment, and at this time the ductility of the alloy disappears. If the cast alloy is heat-treated without cold-working the mag netic energy product is about 1.0 X 106. This material is called Vicalloy I (pronounced vicalloy, V for vanadium, I for iron, and C for cobalt). When the alloy is first hot-worked and then considerably reduced in area by cold-swaging, drawing or grooved rolling, it is found that after heat-treatment the magnetic energy product measured in the direction of previous extension can be increased to 2.0 to 3.5 X 106. These higher values have been obtained only after reductions in area of 75 to 95 per cent, and since the material hardens considerably during working, the reduction ordinarily can be accomplished only in fine wires, although larger sizes can be reduced by the use of powerful machinery. When the material has been cold-worked in such a manner as to improve its energy product substantially, it is called Vicalloy 11. Commercial use of Vicalloy has been made in the recording of speech. Tape 0.002 by 0.050 in. has been found superior in quality to all others tried, and is now used in the Western Electric Mirrorphone 5 In a variety of forms Vicalloy I or I1 is useful in many laboratory instruments, and in experiments in which the sizes and shapes required cannot be obtained with the other more brittle permanent-magnet materials. In 1936, during a study of other age-hardening magnetic systems, it occurred to the author that some of the iron-cobalt-vanadium alloys might be suitable for permanent magnets. The proportions of iron, cobalt, and vanadium were varied and a range of alloys of particular interest was found, as shown by the indicated area in Fig. I. The limits of this range of composition are 30 to 52 per cent iron, 36 to 62 per cent cobalt, and 4 to 16 per cent vanadium. The compositions indicated by points outside this area were also tested. That portion of the geological structure of the Leadville district which rests upon the Archæan is made up of sedimentary beds of Silurian and Carboniferous formation, consisting of many conformable strata of limestones, quartzites, and shales, which have a total present thickness of about five thousand feet. Interbedded with these strata are found, under somewhat fixed lams of regularity, sheets of intrusive igneous rock,' varying in thickness from a foot or two to several hundred feet. These consist for the most part of various types of felsite rocks, classed, by the sanction of common and long-continued usage, under the general term of porphyries. Mr. S. F. Emmons, in the abstract of his " Report upon the Geology and Mining Industry of Leadville," says in this connection : In their mode of occurrence the type-feature is that of intrusive masses, which are developed on a scale of unprecedented magnitude, and follow certain horizons with remarkable regularity.... It is probable that this mode of occurrence of eruptive rocks, viz., as intrusive masses which originally did not reach the surface but were forced up to a certain horizon and then spread out bettween the beds, is far more common than has hitherto been suspected by geologists. It is difficult to conceive of the conditions under which a fused mass could pry open strata to a width of one thousand feet or more, overcoming the weight often thousand feet of superincumbent rocks, and spread itself out in a continuous sheet between the beds to a distance of ten miles beyond the point or line of eruption. That they did exist, however, can be clearly demonstrated in this region.... In one single section over fifteen sheets, many several hundred feet thick, were counted between the Blue Limestone and the top of the Carboniferous. CERTAIN physical and chemical properties of copper are so intimately related that a change in variation of the physical properties indicates a certain chemical change. The standard specifications of copper of the American Society for Testing Materials are based upon physical characteristics with one exception, namely, the copper contents. The physical standard includes electrical properties, defects in the "set or casting," variation in dimensions, weight, etc. Paragraph 4 of the specifications states, " Wire bars, cakes, slabs and billets shall be substantially free from ;shrink holes, cold sets, .pits, sloppy edges, concave tops, and similar defects in set or casting." Shrink holes and concave tops indicate both physical and metallurgical defects; cold sets, sloppy edges, etc., indicate physical defects only; small pit holes may be indicative of either or both physical and metallurgical defects, depending on conditions under which they originated. To the refiner, a copper casting, no matter how made, is known as a "shape," irrespective of whether it is wire bar, ingot, cake, slab, billet, etc. As practically all shapes are cast in an open mold, that is a mold without cope, the surface of the shape cools in contact with the atmosphere and has a coating of oxide. Certain phenomena of the surface indicate the adaptability of the metal for forging or rolling. The writer believes that it is much simpler to produce shapes that are metallurgically correct than those that are mechanically satisfactory. When copper is to be rolled into thin sheets or drawn into very fine wire, the slightest physical defect becomes evident. It is, therefore, of the utmost importance to, consider every characteristic of the shape and ascertain the physical and chemical relationship. THE data which are collected in Table 1 show that the ferrite of low-carbon steel and of electrolytic iron, like the network of hypo- and hyper-eutectoid carbon steel, inherits, either absolutely or relatively, the, grain size of the mother austenite from which it is born in cooling through the transformation range. This evidence is so abundant and concordant as to cast doubt on Prof. Jeffries' 1 hypothesis of what might be called reversed inheritance, by which he explains Mr. Ruder's observation2 that the grains of a "slug of pressed pure electrolytic iron powder"were coarser, perhaps 12,000,000µ2, after a 3-hr. exposure to 1000° C. than after a 3-hr. exposure to 1250-1300°, when they were about 35,000µs. His explanation implies a natural tendency of coarser austenite grains to yield finer ferrite ones than spring from finer austenite grains, so that the inheritance is reversed. What seems to me a simpler explanation is that the enormous grains which followed the 1000° heating were not inherited from the mother austenite, but were formed by the process of natal coarsening, by means of which Stead and Carpenter developed grains of this same order of magnitude in this same kind of material, on heating to 950° or to 1000°, the temperature used by Mr. Ruder, provided the exposure was not unduly prolonged, and it does not seem to have been in Mr. Ruder's case. That their coarsening was natal and not through inheritance is shown first by the fact that their grain coarseness was out of all proportion to their relatively low temperatures and short periods, and hence was very far in excess of the grain size which the mother austenite must have had, and second and more cogently by the fact that the shape of these coarsened grains was evidently determined by the temperature distribution which existed during and immediately after the Ar3 transformation, that during the passage from the gamma to the non-gamma state.

THE success of a coal-mining venture as relates to operations at the gob or break-line, such as the drawing of pillars or the working of long-faces, depends upon the control of face conditions. The measures required to control the latter are dependent upon the action of the coal seam, roof and floor at and in the vicinity of the faces, but the manner in which these will act is dependent upon the rate of face movement as well as upon the face characteristics and upon the forces exerted. Yet the merits of a method of working-the practicability of controlling face conditions and the means required for such control when applied to any particular case-are usually judged only upon a consideration of the characteristics of coal seam, roof and floor, and the manner in which they have been observed to act. Practically every coal-mining man knows that face conditions are influenced by the rate of face movement, but few have appreciated that this is as much of a factor in the control of face conditions as are the face characteristics and the forces exerted. Fewer yet have recognized or taken advantage of faster rates of face movement as one of the principal means of establishing control of face conditions or of securing more favorable face conditions. Seemingly inherent difficulties, particularly in the control of roof conditions, but also in the control of conditions of the coal seam and floor, are frequently mitigated or disappear when the rate of movement of the faces is sufficiently increased. The characteristics of the coal seam, roof and floor and the forces exerted upon them do determine the general trend or tendency of face action, but the manner in which the coal seam, roof and floor will act and be acted upon and the magnitude of the action during the time the site of mining operations remains at any particular point is very largely determined by the rate of movement of the faces.

COAL mine operators recognize coal as an abrasive material, because the wear of drilling, cutting, and conveying equipment is reflected as a cost item for replacement of parts. Similarly, industrial consumers of coal experience abrasive wear on all coal-handling equipment. Operators of pulverized fuel plants are doubtless most keenly aware of the abrasiveness of coal, because under the high contact pressures developed between coal and metal in pulverizers, abrasive wear is increased many fold. Moreover, experience in operating pulverized fuel plants has demonstrated that some coals are much more abrasive than others. Hardgrove' stated that maintenance costs entailed by the wear of grinding elements is often a more important variable than the cost of the power required to pulverize different coals. Craig2 also reports that one coal may cause pulverizer parts to wear several times faster than another. It is apparent, therefore, that those concerned with pulverizing coal could profitably employ a method for estimating the abrasiveness of different coals, just as they utilize standard tests for thermal value, grindability, and ash-fusion temperature to assist in selecting the most suitable and economical coal to use in a particular plant. The objective of this investigation was to develop a test procedure that would be suitable for general use in estimating the abrasiveness of coals. However, few, if any, of the standard tests now used for evaluating the properties of coal are the product of a single investigation or the result of a single investigator's efforts. Rather, in each case, a testing procedure was devised by one investigator, used by others on a wider variety of coals, and finally refined completely as the result of the joint efforts of a number of interested people. Thus, the test procedure for estimating abrasiveness developed in the course of this work may not be refined sufficiently in its present form for general use, but it may serve as the starting point from which an acceptable test procedure can be developed. The method has been used thus far on only about a dozen coals, and there has been no opportunity to attempt a correlation between experimental results and actual plant experience. Only wider use of the procedure by other investigators and correlation with plant experience can determine to what extent the method will have to be modified to render it suitable for general application. Test Method Although the literature contains no record of an attempt to devise a method for estimating the abrasiveness of coal that could be used industrially, several investigators have tested properties of coal that are closely related to its abrasiveness. The abrasiveness of a material generally is considered to be related to its hardness, and hardness tests for coal have been employed by Heywood,' O'Neill," and Mathes. Also, the resistance of coal to abrasion, a property that presumably is related to the abrasiveness of coal, was measured by Heywooda and by Simek, Pulkrabek, and Coufalik.2 11 these investigators tested only individual pieces of coal. Since coal is a heterogeneous material having components of varying properties, tests of this type can yield results having little more than academic interest. Only a test method that utilizes a representative sample of coal can give results that are useful industrially. The abrasion tests used for various other materials have been considered for adaptation to testing the abrasiveness of coal. The tests used for metals,7-9 paving and flooring,'" and rubber," cannot be used because coal is not sufficiently abrasive.~ The present experimental work was begun before World War II and was conducted by three research fellows"'" working under a joint agreement between the University of Washington and the Bureau of Mines. After a great deal of preliminary work with a variety of apparatus and materials, a test procedure was developed which consisted of rotating a test disk 2Yz in. diam in a steel mortar containing the coal sample. The shaft carrying the test disk at the lower end and a 100-lb load on the upper end was free to move vertically. The bed of coal in the mortar was kept fluid by low-pressure air admitted through a port near the bottom of the mortar. Measurable wear on an Armco iron disk could be obtained in this test procedure, but, despite extensive efforts to eliminate them, several major disadvantages remained in this test method. First, with most coals the amount of wear on the iron disk did not exceed a few milligrams. Second, a single type of disk was not applicable for all coals. A smooth iron disk gave satisfactory results with both bituminous and sub-bituminous coals, but hardly any wear with anthracite or coke. A disk having studs or projections gave more satisfactory abrasion losses with anthracite and coke and presented no operating difficulties with free-burning bituminous and sub-bituminous coals. IT is now generally recognized that the gravitational method of geophysical surveying is a valuable aid in elucidating the geological structure of the subsoil and enables the practical geologist to deduce the presence of useful deposits. The particular suitability of the torsion balance to the location of large and important subterranean structures has given rise to a wide application of this method by many of the important oil companies in their search for future supplies, and so intense have been these efforts that little has been heard of the method in other connections, with the exception of occasional references to its application in the location of hidden deposits of metallic ores, salt and lignite, and a number of accounts of its use in the elucidation of geological structures. Its success in the location of salt domes is well known, and establishes it as one of the most important of the geophysical methods, especially for the indirect location of oil. In the British Isles, however, no large occurrence of oil is likely to be revealed, and here the practical application of the gravitational method has been restricted almost entirely to the search for ores. This type of survey possesses well marked characteristics, and presents a gravitational problem that has necessitated the development of a special and probably unusual plan of campaign, full details of which it is hoped will shortly be published. The problems and difficulties encountered in this work are of necessity fundamentally related to those met with in the search for oil by means of the torsion balance, but they also possess several special and distinctive features which undoubtedly differentiate them from the obstacles confronting the oil prospector, and which call for special consideration and treatment.

It seems proper, before describing the plant which has been erected in Rome, N. Y., for the purpose of demonstrating the practicability of my process of refining and desilverizing lead by electrolysis, to state in a few words the principles that govern the process. They are well known to those who have studied electrical science, and to the practical electro-platers of the country, and are briefly these: If we take a plate, or other form, of metal (impure lead in this case), and immerse it in a bath consisting of a solution of the main metal (that which contains the impurities), and also immerse another plate, which shall be a conductor of electricity, in the bath, but separated from the first by the solution, and connect the former plate with the positive pole of the source of electricity, and the other plate with the negative pole, an action will go on in this bath which is called electrolysis. There is first a decomposition of the solution constituting the bath ; then a solution of the metal at the positive pole (called the anode), and a deposition upon the other plate connected with the negative pole. which plate is technically called the cathode. If the bath is properly constituted, and the current of electricity which is passed through the bath is of the proper strength and electro-motive force, the dissolution of the anode and the deposition of the metal upon the cathode will be exactly equivalent. The analysis and synthesis are opposite and equal. If, on the other hand, this solution (called an electrolyte) be not properly constituted, decomposition will go on, but there will be these effects: a superoxidation at the anode and a liberation of free hydrogen at the cathode, which free hydrogen escapes finally in bubbles through the liquid to the surface, and into the atmosphere. The term "survival" in the title means the preservation of a society in which men are free from the political and economic restraints that characterize totalitarian systems, be they communist, socialist or facist. It means the ability to withstand the enemy's offensives in the fields of propaganda, commercial competition and, if necessary, war. The temptation to substitute "victory" for "survival" is great but a realistic appraisal of the creeping socialism and demagoguery that pervade our time indicates that we may have to be content with survival in status quo. "Mineral strength" means assurance that adequate supplies will be available to meet all the contingencies of cold and hot wars. The overall mineral position of the U. S. viewed in the light of these premises is far from secure. It is true that we are the leading producing and consuming nation of the world, but the Soviet Union is gaining and the Sino-Soviet Bloc confronts us with a sobering potential. The emergence of the Common Market in Europe as an economic and political unit places a third independent entity into the competition. Our total mineral output continues on an up- ward trend but the reverse is true in certain strategic commodities. Moreover, consumption is moving ahead faster than production so that there is increasing dependence on imports which has significant adverse geopolitical connotations. There is widespread belief that our resources can at least maintain present levels of self-sufficiency during this critical period in world history, but social dreamers, the labor monopoly, and trade and taxation policies have discouraged aggressive activity in exploration and development, and access to essential foreign sources is threatened by a variety of circumstances. Our stockpiles, belatedly built up to achieve minimum protection against shortages in time of war, are under. political attack and threatened with partial destruction on the basis of what are at best uncertain assumptions regarding the new: look of global warfare.

Shales containing "kerogen," or bituminous matter, which on destructive distillation yield oily and tarry matters resembling petroleum are here designated as oil-shales. They differ from oil-bearing shales from which petroleum may be obtained by so-called mechanical means. The educts obtained by the destructive distillation resemble some or all the varieties of petroleum, depending on the character of the shale and the mode of treatment. Some shale oils have a paraffin base, some an asphaltic base, or a combination; some run high in sulfur compounds. The methods of refining and cracking, therefore, are essentially the same as are used in refining petroleums. In 1860, in this country, over fifty companies were successfully distilling various natural bituminous materials for the production of " coal oil," used for illuminating purposes. The discovery of petroleum and the failure of these companies to save and utilize the valuable byproduct, ammonia, brought about their inevitable doom. Prior to that time, more or less successful efforts were made to produce from the shales of Scotland oils for illuminating and heating purposes. Competition of native petroleum from the United States early eliminated some of these companies and with the entrance of oil from the Russian and other fields into the world's markets, the Scottish oil-shale industry underwent serious and trying experiences until, in 1916, only four (Scottish) were paying concerns. These survived only through energy and the application of skill in saving valuable byproducts. A few companies have successfully operated in France and New Zealand. The Canadian Government showed active interest in the New Brunswick shales, which exist in quantity and are more valuable than the Scottish shales. The retarded development of that valuable asset of the Province of New Brunswick was most unfortunate, especially when the product was so much needed in the prosecution of the war. The raceway in front of the tuyere of the blast furnace has been studied quantitatively and a correlation obtained for the penetrastudiedtion of the blast. Some evidence is presented for the height and width of the raceway which suggests that all the raceways of a ffurnace overlap. The size of the coke in this zone has been measfurnaceoverlap.ured photographically during normal operation and results are given for the various areas. IN an earlier paper,' it was shown that a raceway exists opposite each tuyere of a blast furnace. This raceway is formed by the jet effect of the air emerging from the tuyere and consists essentially of a turbulence in which coke particles are recir-culated at high speed. Its presence was deduced originally from observations on movies taken with a high-speed camera through the tuyeres of various furnaces and was confirmed by experiments made on a model. In the model described,' this raceway was shown as operating in a vertical plane only, although there was a suggestion in the motion-picture film exhibited at that time that the raceway was three dimensional, unless artificially restricted. There was also some doubt then about the factors influencing its size. This paper describes the next steps in the investigation. Since the size of the raceway is obviously of importance in the operation of the furnace, it seemed worth while to study the subject more carefully. It is probably in this region that about half the coke in the furnace is consumed, so that the movement of the stock column may well be controlled by raceway behavior. Furthermore, there is some evidence to suggest that the coke is packed densely in the center of the furnace to form the "dead man" and more loosely above the raceway. It is therefore probable that the bulk of the gases passing up the stack flow from the top surface of this raceway. Clearly then, a knowledge of this critical zone is of interest to the blast furnace operator, and the first half of this report is devoted to a quantitative discussion of the subject. A further topic of interest among operators is the degree of breakdown of coke in the furnace, with which is inseparably linked the importance of a strong coke. Indeed, the whole question of the optimum size and type of coke may be as dependent on the condition of the coke in the bottom of the blast furnace as at the top. Attempts have been made from time to time to obtain samples of coke from the tuyeres and other furnace openings but they all suffer from the fact that the coke is filled to a varying degree with metal and slag and is probably broken up by the very act of taking the sample. It has proved difficult to make any reliable studies of coke size by these methods. However, it did seem possible to use the highspeed movies mentioned earlier1 to estimate the size of the coke. These movies provide an accurate record of individual coke particles so that, in theory at least, it should be possible to measure the size of the particles one by one and to obtain, for the first time, information on the coke being blown around the raceway under actual operating conditions while the furnace is performing normally. Such a study has been made and is discussed in the second half of this paper. The results obtained enabled the blast furnace data to be correlated with the model results given in the first half. Raceway Size In order to make a quantitative study of the size of the raceway it was necessary to devise some apparatus of laboratory scale, which could be handled quickly and easily. This focused attention on models, which in turn means that the laws of similarity governing this particular process must be ascertained. ON the 6th of February 1684, Dr. Martin Lister mentioned at a meeting of the Royal Society1 that "brass is magnetical," and promised to give an account of that assertion at some other time. He repeated his promise but never fulfilled it, and it was left for William Arderon2 to show, in 1958, that brass could be made magnetic by hammering and that it would retain polarity after magnetizing. Twenty-seven years later Cavallo3,4 examined the matter in great detail. Working with cast calamine brass, he showed that it could be made magnetic by hammering and nonmagnetic by subsequent annealing at a red heat. He found that annealing at a very high temperature caused the samples to lose their magnetic quality permanently, even after subsequent cold-working, but that remelting and cold-working restored it. He encountered some samples of brass that could not be rendered magnetic by any treatment. Experiments in which these were remelted with iron additions gave negative results, and Cavallo concluded that iron impurity was not the cause of the magnetism. He worked with 50-grain (3-gram) samples melted under the blowpipe, hence cooled very quickly. Bennet5 made whole crucible charges from copper and zinc, and found the resulting brass ingots to be magnetic only when iron had been added and then only after cold-working. All these observations applied to material in the cast condition, in which coring would produce a continuous spectrum of composition and cooling would result in varying degrees of precipitation. This knowledge of the subject seems to have been forgotten in the nineteenth century. The older brass was made by the calamine process and frequently contained iron in amounts of 0.5 per cent or more, absorbed from the impure ore with which the copper and charcoal were heated in making the brass. When metallic zinc became available in commercial quantities, calamine brass gradually disappeared, and with it the knowledge of its curious magnetic properties. Only when sensitive apparatus replaced the compass needle of the earlier investigators could the effects be detected in relatively pure metal. The effect of cold-working in inducing ferromagnetism was rediscovered by Bitters in 1930 in a sample of impure copper, and this was confirmed by Lowance and Constant,9 Honda and Shimizu, 10,11 and others. In the same year, Tammann and Oelsen12 showed that copper-rich copper-iron alloys after certain heat-treatments could be rendered ferromagnetic or made more strongly ferromagnetic by cold-rolling. Kussman and Seeman13 showed that the change of susceptibility of relatively pure copper on cold-working was associated with the iron content, and concluded that actual precipitation of iron was caused by cold-working, which is a satisfactory theory until one considers the improbably high rate of diffusion that this would involve. Model pillars of limestone, marble, sandstone, and granite, with length-to-diameter (LID) ratios of 3, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.25 (0.286 for granite), were broken in axial compression to determine to what extent an increase in end constraint increased compressive strength. Radial end constraints of 13 to 23% of the average axial stress in the pillar, produced by solid steel rings bonded with epoxy to the ends of dogbone-shaped specimens, increased compressive strength somewhat above that of cylindrical pillars without ring constraint. However, when the results were compared with those obtained by other investigators for straight specimens of several rock types taken collectively, with LID ratios greater than 0.5, the resulting strengths were not significantly different. Thus, the amount of end constraint produced by the solid steel rings was about the same as that produced by the friction from the steel end plates. In other tests, a radial prestress of 3000 or 5000 psi was applied prior to axial loading by adjustable hardened steel rings to increase the constraint above that obtained for the solid rings. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 3000 psi prestress, was 54.3% for limestone, 40.3% for marble, 44.7% for sandstone, and 23.4% for granite. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 5000 psi prestress, was 74.2% for limestone, 51.2% for marble, 61.6% for sandstone, and 29.7% for granite. These constraints increased the compressive strength significantly above the strength of straight specimens and solid-ring constrained specimens. These results suggest that large horizontal stresses in orebodies mined by the room-and-pillar method should increase the strength of the pillars and allow an increase in ore recovery by a reduction of pillar size when major structural defects are absent. One important objective of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) mining research program is the rational design of mining systems. In the design of room-and-pillar mining operations, pillar strength is a fundamental variable. It is customary to estimate this strength from uniaxial compression tests of rock samples and to correct this value for the length-to-diameter (LID) ratio of the in-situ pillar. This method of estimating pillar strength corrects for pillar shape but does not consider the effect of a large horizontal in-situ stress field that sometimes exists in underground formations. The purpose of the work covered in this report was to determine to what extent the compressive strengths of model pillars of relatively brittle rock loaded in axial compression were affected by lateral end constraint. In previous work, Obert l used solid steel rings bonded to the ends of dogbone-shaped specimens to study the creep behavior of three quasi-plastic rocks -salt, trona, and potash ore - during a test period of 1000 hr. These rings provided radial constraint during the loading cycle of 20 to 50% of the axial stress for specimens with LID ratios of 2, 0.5, and 0.25. He concluded that (1) "for a quasi-plastic material the end constraint strongly affects the specimen strength, and (2) as D/L increases (length-to-diameter decreases), the specimens lose their brittle characteristics and tend to flow rather than fracture." He also concluded that model pillars constrained by rings were better for use in predicting the strength of mine pillars than either cylindrical or prismatic specimens. This conclusion appears to be valid where mine pillars, roof, and floor are a single structural element. In the present study, 460 specimens of four relatively brittle rocks — limestone, marble, sandstone, and granite - were tested to failure. The study consisted of two parts: (1) the effect on the compressive strength of end constraint produced during the axial loading cycle by solid steel rings bonded with epoxy to the ends of the specimens, and (2) the effect on the compressive strength of increased end constraint produced in part by a prestress applied prior to axial loading and in part by lateral expansion of the specimen during the loading cycle. THE dynamometer herein described is a modification of the one invented by Mr. Samuel Batchelder, of Boston, nearly forty years ago, a description of which may be found in the Journal of the Franklin Institute, 1843, vol. xxxii,.p. 277, and in the Scientific American of August 31st, 1878. The modification consists in providing a method of making an automatic record, and of indicating more minute variations of the power transmitted. The improved dynamometer was designed by the writer in 1877, and was built a few months since by the Class of 1879 of the Stevens Institute of Technology. The accompanying cut, taken from the Annual Announcement of the Stevens Institute, represents the dynamometer without the recording attachment. It consists, as shown, of two stout cast-iron frames, held together by bolts in bearings, in the top of which frames run two shafts, each carrying a pulley at its outer end and a bevel gear-wheel of 45' at its inner end. One of these shafts is the driving-shaft, connected by belt to the engine or other prime mover; the other is the driven shaft, connected by belt to the machine driven. The power is transmitted from one shaft to the other through two other bevel-wheels of 45' gearing with the first, the shaft common to them and on which they run freely being at right angles to the axis of the two shafts first mentioned, and carrying at one extremity a heavy pendulum. The bevel-wheels being connected, as shown, and the power being applied to the driving-wheel, the two intermediate wheels with their common shaft have a tendency to revolve around the driving-axis, which tendency is a measure of the force transmitted, and is resisted by the moment of the weight of the pendulum. It was my intention to have directed the attention of the members of the Institute to a complete series of rocks representing the older and middle formations represented in Pennsylvania, but time has been insufficient for the purpose, and 1 have been unable, in the first attempts to reduce the sections of those rocks, which I have brought with me to this meeting, to the requisite thinness necessary for exhibiting the peculiarities of their constituent minerals. The rocks represented here belong to the various horizons already mentioned, and include gneiss, ferruginous gneiss, chlorite slate, quartzites, and hydro-mica slates, limestones, dolomites, ferruginous conglomerates, quartz conglomerates, " Potomac marble" (nether member of the Mesozoic series), dolerites, and a syenite. The order in which these are named is, roughly, the order .of geographical position in a section line from southeast to northwest, commencing at the intersection of the Northern Central Railroad with the Maryland line, and ending a few miles from the town of York, and a short distance within the marginal outcrop of Mesozoic red sandstone. In such a geographical section all the rocks above mentioned would be encountered in the given order except syenite, about which a few words are to be said in a moment. (But this is far from representing the rocks in their geological sequence.) There is nothing of unusual interest to present to your notice in these slates and quarteites. The limestones were carefully searched tinder 450 diameters microscopic power, but they show no signs of organic remaius. One section of a fine-grained Triassic sandstone contains a very beau- . tifully banded plate of quartz. But the objects of greatest interest at present are the specimens of trap. The following article presents notes and data compiled and computed by the writer for use in the determination of: size and slope of mill launders, details of junction boxes and downspouts, and distribution of pulp. It also includes pulp formulas, volume of discharge through bushings, paths of discharging streams, banking of turns and curves. In the design of a concentrating mill, the draftsman usually considers launders to the extent of providing ample "head" for transmission of pulp from one department of the mill to another. The superintendent of construction aims to build his launders wide and deep, and on a slope steep enough to ensure positive flow. So launders are laid generally on too steep a slope, with the result that the repair gang works to maintain launder bottoms and sides against the erosive action of the conveyed pulp. To this end many kinds of liners have been devised: concrete, mastic, white iron, glass, rubber. True, the reduction of slope to the point where a pulp will flow with minimum wear, will minimize labor and expense; but when the desired slope is not predetermined, the millman hesitates to readjust his launder slopes by cut-and-try methods. To the end that the desired size and slope may be found readily, the writer has: (1) conducted experiments with pulps of different specific gravity, screen analysis and dilution; (2) gathered a few graphic data from standard reference works (such as Peele's Mining Engineer's Handbook and Taggart's Handbook of Ore Dressing); (3) computed several tables; and compiled results that have proved dependable for Utah Copper ore. It is quite possible that the following tables and graphs may not be applicable to all ores, but it is hoped that they may prove helpful, even in slight degree, in alleviating a portion of the trouble and migraine of some other millman.
