Attempts to locate domestic supplies of sillimanite have been unsuccessful until recently. This paper describes recent discoveries of sillimanite-bearing schists in the Southeastern States, with emphasis on geology of the deposits, mineral composition, origin, and reserves. Statements concerning possible methods of mining, milling, and utilization of sillimanite are given. Results from refractory tests on a laboratory scale are summarized.

PERHAPS the matter of greatest interest to all mining men at the present time is the question of income and excess profits taxes on mines. Every producing mine in the United States is called upon to render to the government an account of its operations and to pay a graduated tax upon its earnings. It is manifestly a matter in which every mine owner, every stockholder in a mining corporation, every mining and metallurgical engineer, every person employed by a mining company and every one engaged in an industry which in any way depends upon the continued operation of our mines or who consumes their products is financially, to a greater or less extent, involved. In view of this fact it is surprising to see how little attention is paid to it and how few of our members have taken the pains to investigate and understand the provisions of recent enactments by Congress and the ways in which these enactments are being applied to mining industries.

Solid lead obeys a single parabolic weight increase vs. time law. In contrast, liquid lead undergoes three successive parabolic weight increases vs. time laws, the first of which has a low constant relative to the latter two. The conversion times for the change from one parabola to the next decrease with increasing temperature. IN recent reports on the subject,1,2 it was noted that zirconium and titanium scale in air by a complex mechanism. The scale first forming on the metal is protective to the extent that it gives a low constant, K, for Tammann's, and Pilling and Bedworth's parabolic equation: w² = Kt [1] relating weight increase, w, due to chemical reaction of the metal with the air, and time, t. After hundreds of hours of apparent stability in some cases the first scale yields to another that offers little protection to the metal. This transition from one scale to another, from a slow parabolic oxidation reaction to a fast one, was not due to impurities in the atmosphere or incidental effects (changing environment, etc.) but was a specific behavior of the metal itself, the transition occurring at definite times (dependent on temperature) and showing other reproducible traits. In view of this behavior how can long-time service behavior be predicted from short-time laboratory tests, not only in the case of these metals, but in any case? Certainly a systematic study of the type of scaling behavior described above—wherever it is found—would help to answer this question. The present paper is a report on the behavior as it is found in lead—the only metal to the authors' knowledge for which the behavior has been described at all, if inadequately, for our present purpose.* At least four oxides of lead are known, of which one occurs in two allotropic forms. They are ß (red) tetragonal PbO stable up to 486°C;8 a (yellow) orthorhombic PbO stable from 486°C up to its dissociation temperature in air at about 2300°C;9 minium or Pb3O4 which from the dissociation pressure data given in Fig. 1 decomposes to PbO at 540°C in air; lead sesquioxide or Pb2O3,; and lead dioxide or PbO2 which, according to Fig. 1, decomposes in air at 400°C to minium. In view of the high dissociation temperature of PbO, lead will scale up to at least its boiling point. Further, it is known that oxygen is almost insoluble in liquid lead.'V his implies a fair probability that an oxide scale would not dissolve in the molten metal and would afford the same protection to lead in the liquid state as in the solid. All of the oxides of lead for which specific gravity data are available are more voluminous than an equivalent weight of metal or a lower oxide from which they might form, hence the scales will be in compression. Lead oxides are known to be ductile, so it would be anticipated that they would form coherent nonporous scales. It is not surprising to learn, then, that both solid and liquid lead scale according to the Tammann, and Pilling and Bed-worth law.14,15 (Gruhl states that at 600°C and above lead oxidizes linearly with time because of "spitting" of the scale.) The parabolic constants K reported by various investigators3,14-16 are badly scattered, however, as shown in Fig. 2. The oxides formed on solid lead were described as being reddish-brown but were not chemically identified by Pilling and Bedworth.15 Gruhl's descripdin³ of the appearance of the scales On his liquid samples indicates that a (yellow orthorhombic) PbO is formed initially on the specimens but gives Way eventually—at least at temperatures below 486 °C— to .ß (red tetraunal) PbO, and that below 540°C minium—Pb3O4 :is firmed at an even later time as an overlay on either the red or yellow PbO. Fig. 3 is a graphical interpretation of Gruhl's description. Gruhl does not indicate any change in the parabolic scaling rate as yellow PbO converts to red. This is an era of " expansion; and, conformably with the change in commercial conditions, the function of the mining engineer, as well as that of his confreres in many other professions, has also expanded. From the position of an engineer, limited to the determination of technical questions, the engineer of to-day has come to assume an economic importance in those branches of industry dependent upon engineering skill for their development. He is indeed an engineer of limited usefulness who does not go further professionally than to submit a purely technical report on subjects presented for his consideration. While he has the same responsibility as formerly in the solution of the technical problems involved, he is further expected to supplement his report with advice on the financial and commercial aspects of these problems. For the great majority of problems presented to the engineer ultimately involve the determination of the pecuniary, relations of the propositions under consideration. The great corporation lawyer no longer earns his fee by merely submitting his opinion as to the legal issues involved in law-suits affecting the corporation; he now assumes charge of the entire legal work, including both the organization of the corporation and the maintenance of its legal status thereafter. In like manner, the engineer, whose report was, as I have said, formerly confined to the determination of the geological and other cognate features of a mining enterprise, is now expected, not. only to embody information on these subjects in his report, but also to give his opinion whether the property offered for sale in pursuance of such an enterprise is worth the price asked for it. EDWIN LUDLOW, the 41st President of the A. I. M. E., died in Muskogee, Okla., on Feb. 10, 1924, after a brief illness of influenza followed by pneumonia. He was born in Oakdale, Long Island, N. Y., March 12, 1858, a son of William Handy and Louise (Nicoll) Ludlow, attended Flushing (L. I.) Institute 1868-75: and Columbia School of Mines (N. Y.) where he graduated with the degree of Engineer of Mines with the Class of 1879. After graduation his first employment was as assistant engineer in river and harbor work on the Delaware River near Philadelphia. In 1881 he went to Mexico as one of the engineers on the Mexican Central Railroad, then building from Laredo, Texas, to Mexico City. The road being in financial difficulties he returned to the United, [states, and shortly thereafter was made superintendent of the Union Coal Co.'s collieries located in the western middle anthracite field, between Shamokin and Mt. Carmel. Ludlow and Arthur H. Storrs, then superintendent of the Neilson Shaft Colliery, in Shamokin, were known throughout that section as the baby superintendents, both under 25 years of age. Battelle Memorial Institute participated in a program for the General Services Administration aimed at developing a nickel-cobalt separation process that could be integrated in the Nicaro nickel plant. At the time the programwas being carried out, the Nicaro process was a straight-through operation, in which the ore was reduced and leached, after which the pregnant solution was boiled to produce a so-called "bulk precipitate" which contained virtually all of the nickel and cobalt which had been dissolved in the leaching step. The weight ratio of nickel to cobalt in Nicaro ore is approximately 15 to 20:l. The weight ratio of nickel to cobalt in the finished product had to be 100:l or higher to meet specifications. Because the Nicaro process embodied no nickel-cobalt separation step, the only way that a bulk precipitate of the specified nicke1:cobalt ratio could be produced was to so adjust roasting and leaching conditions that nickel would be selectively leached and most of the cobalt would be rejected with the tailings. The required selectivity, however, was achieved at the expense of nickel recovery, which was 5 or more per cent less than might have been obtained with the existing equipment, utilities, man power, etc., had selectivity been no object. The over-all purpose of the program was to develop a separation step that could be fitted into or onto the Nicaro facilities and which would permit the manufacture of a product that would meet the desired specifications and still permit the recovery of a maximum amount of nickel. Battelle suggested that this might be accomplished by reprocessing off-specification bulk precipitate and specifically suggested the process based on ammonium sulphate leaching followed by hydrogen reduction of the leach solution according to techniques developed commercially by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited. Such a process would not only satisfy the objectives of the research but would present two additional advantages. (1) It would produce a separate cobalt product which could be further processed into metal, alloys, oxides, or salts. (2) It would yield nickel in metallic form which might be more generally marketable and command a slightly higher price per unit of nickel than the Nicaro oxide product. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCESS Figure 1 is a flowsheet of the process. The essential features are: (1) Extraction of about 97 per cent of the nickel and about 85 per cent of the cobalt from bulk precipitate by a principal leach with ainmonium sulphate solution (Step A). Mathematical simulation of reservoir behavior may be used to help understand reservoir processes and to predict reservoir behavior, thereby leading to the most economically desirable form of exploitation. In addition, simulation can be used as a tool for reservoir description to learn more about the physical nature of the reservoir and the mode of primary recovery. This use is essential in most reservoir studies and represents one of the more significant applications of simulation. Prediction of reservoir behavior provides information concerning displacement efficiency, optimum well locations, and the comparison of alternative producing processes. Since oil, water and gas all commonly occur in many reservoirs, a simulation that takes into account the simultaneous flow of three immiscible phases is a prerequisite for obtaining such information. Furthermore, a simulation that describes this flow in two dimensions provides the capability of evaluating combination gas- and water-drive reservoirs with either an areal or a cross-sectional description. Many reservoir problems require such a simulation. The objective of the research described here was to develop a mathematical model and associated computer program for accurate, efficient, and economical prediction of the reservoir flow of three phases in two-dimensional geometry. Several authors have discussed multidimensional reservoir simulation of two phases.l-3 Gottfried et al.' presented an analy- sis of three-phase simulation in one dimension. Fagin and Stewart" and Garrett6 have discussed the simulation of three-phase flow in two dimensions, but their solution techniques were different from the method discussed in this paper. In particular, previous models and computer programs have usually involved either fewer capabilities or inefficient and less rigorous descriptions resulting in limited applicability. In the following sections, we present a description of the model, an evaluation of the method, and the application to reservoir problems. Additional and supporting material is presented in the Appendix. The Three-Phase Model General Description The three-phase model consists of the mathematical description of the flow of oil, water and gas in a reservoir. Conceptually this description considers flow in all three space dimensions, but in the subject simulator it is assumed that no flow occurs in the third dimension. The model includes the effects on reservoir behavior of fluid and rock compressibility, viscosity, gravity, capillary pressure, relative permeability and gas solubility. Within the two-dimensional restriction, the reservoir considered may be completely heterogeneous and anisotropic. The mechanisms of corrosion and corrosion fatigue damages to sucker rods are examined from a fundamental electrochemical viewpoint, and the relationships of sucker rod microstructures to these damaging effects are defined. The common corrosive agents in crude oil production and storage are discussed as to types of attacks that they cause. The variations of fatigue strength with alloy content, surface preparation, and stress ranges are analyzed. Finally, conclusions are drawn as to how microstructures largely influence and control sucker rod performance. INTRODUCTION Greater than 90 per cent of the crude oil produced by artificial lift methods is produced through sucker rod pumping systems. In the USA each year more than $14 million is spent for sucker rods in new and old pumping installations. It is important to make this investment a wise one. Essentially, the sucker rod system is a long series of steel rods, operating under alternating stress loadings and under mechanical vibrations, which connect the surface power source with the subsurface pump. These rods often operate in a variety of corrosive media, including water, brines, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sul-fide, and air. Basically, this paper is concerned with the problem of the behavior of certain steels in various corrosive media under high and dynamic stress patterns. The main objective of this paper is to show how, once the stress effects and the corrosive environments are defined, one can still realize structural control and beneficial influence upon corrosion and corrosion fatigue. FUNDAMENTAL DEFINITIONS AND ANALYSIS In the corrosion and stress behavior of this solid state mixture of iron and iron carbide called steel, one must analyze upon what major factors does its service life depend and of what, exactly, is steel composed. The former question can be referred to two external factors and two internal factors. The two major external factors are: 1. the nature of the stress patterns — size and range of stresses present 2. the nature of the corrosion — erosion environment — the corrodent and/or wear involved The two fundamental internal factors that govern the strength and useful life of a steel both in normal duty and in heavy-duty corrosion service are: 1. the nature of the steel volume properties 2. the nature of the steel surface properties For the latter question normal steel is defined as a solid mixture of iron and iron carbide particles, generally with certain accidental and intentional elements present. (The amount of iron carbide present is determined by the carbon content of the steel.) These additional elements generally dissolve into either the iron (ferrite) or the iron carbide (cementite) components.

GILSONITE is a brilliant black, tarry-like bitumen, classed technically with glance pitch and graharnite as an asphaltite. As found it is brittle, breaking much like ice, and has a conchoidal fracture. Purest forms are used in the manufacture of paints, varnishes, electrical irisulatiorl, and inks for rotogravure; molded articles such as switch handles, telephone mouthpieces, and but- tons are made from the intermediate grades, and the poorer grades are used for the saturation of felt. According to the U. S. Bureau of Mines figures, production grew from about 4000 tons mined in 1904 to 55,000 tons in 1929. This asphaltic substance is found only in the Uintah basin in northeastern Utah, in veins over a wide area. Veins in the vicinity of Fort nuchesne were first discovered about 18G2, on what was then the Uintah Indian reservation, and the vein matter was originally called Uintaite because of that fact, In the early days, S. H. Gilson. of Salt Lake City, was so persistent and zealous in his efforts to develop the deposits and find a market that the name gilsonite was given to the material. Later, the wider and more renowned wins near Wayson and Dragon, in extreme eastern Utah, became the main supply.

The properties of some heavy liquids which can be used in sink-float separations are discussed with major emphasis being given to the halogenated hydrocarbons. Data are presented on density, viscosity, thermal characteristics and the effects of moisture and temperature on the corrosiveness of the liquids towards various materials of construction. The toxicity of these materials, the hazards involved in handling them, and the procedures for handling them safely are also discussed. True liquids have certain advantages over colloidal suspensions for sink-float separation of minerals which makes their use especially advantageous when close separations, fine particle sizes or water-soluble minerals are to be treated. For best separating results, the medium should have an easily controlled, uniform, stable density. Here, true liquids have the advantages of allowing closer control of density and of not requiring agitation to maintain a uniform den- sity in the equipment. Low viscosities are desired in a separating liquid so that rapid separations of fine material can be made. Many liquids have lower viscosities than the colloidal suspensions at operating gravities of 1.4 to 5.0. For economic reasons and to prevent contamination of the product, the separating medium must be easily and completely removed from the ore. Normally, true liquids must be more completely removed than the cheaper suspensions and thus cause more problems in this area. The fact that the medium should not react with the minerals, air, water or the common materials of construction limits the choice of liquids which can be used, but many are available which are sufficiently stable. A more serious objection to the use of true liquids is that many of them present a toxic hazard to operating personnel and users of the product. Most true liquids are toxic to some extent, but modem knowledge of toxicity allows us to recognize the hazards inherent in handling them and enables us to design around them. Three types of true liquids are available for this use: 1) Halogenated hydrocarbons cover the gravity range from 1.2 to 3.3. They are generally more volatile and less viscous than the other liquids.

He was born at Montreal, Canada, in 1875. His earliest education was received in Montreal hut was continued from 1885 to 1892 at schools and academies in Brooklyn, Whitestone, and Flushing, L. I. For his technical education he returned to McGill University, where he graduated in 1897. His first professional occupation was as transitman enga.ged in the running of township lines in the Rainy River District of Ontario. In 1899, he was made assistant chemist at the Cuggenheim smelter at Aguascalientes, Mexico. From 1900 to 1903, he was chief chemist for La Compañia Minera de Peñoles, at Mapimi, Durango. We have no information as to his pursuits during the next eight years, but from 1911 until 1914, when he became a member of the Institute, he was chief engineer for the Bankhead mines in Alberta, Canada. Lieutenant-Colonel Alfred Winter Evans Lieutenant-Colonel Evans, who was in command of the Third Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, and had been cited in Distinguished Service Orders and received the Distinguished Conduct Medal, was killed in action on Oct. 12, 1917. Alfred Winter Evans was born in Natal, South Africa, in 1881, and received his preliminary education in the Durban High School. For the next five years he attended St. George's School at Harpenden Heights, England, until 1898. Returning to South Africa, he worked . for three months of 1898 as underground sampler for the Crown Deep Gold Mining Co., at Johannesburg, and for six months of the following year he was shift-boss for the Crown Deep, Ltd. At the outbreak of the Boer War he took an active part and was engaged on military service from 1899 to 1902. At the close of the mar, he came to New York and attended the Columbia School of Mines, where he graduated with the degree of E. M. in 1906. A part of that year he spent as assayer to a mining company at Poland, Arizona. In 1907, he returned to South Africa and engaged as underground contractor in charge of mining and development at a number of the South African mines, notably the French-Rand, the ViIIage Main Reef, the City Deep, and others. In 1908, he acted as shift-boss for the Fer-rerra Gold Mining Co. at Johannesburg. In 1909, he was appointed acting general manager for the Consolidated Goldfields of New Zealand,

Many Americans will judge the energy crisis by the picture shrink on their TV screen. And they are right to make this assessment considering the large areas of the country with marginal generating capacity, (See Fig, 1). The Federal Power Commission (FPC) recommends 20-25% reserve generating capacity above peak summer loads and 15-20% as minimal. The New York metropolitan area is the most concentrated power service area in the United States, and a spot check with Consolidated Edison, serving this area, revealed that on Friday, August 18, the company was operating at 5% reserve.

department, first as a practical miner, next. as rodman on the survey corps, of which he soon became chief, then draftsman and mining engineer in the company's office. In January, 1916, he was promoted to the position of district engineer in charge of mining engineering work. He became a member of this Institute in September, 1917. Captain Ba.llamy's military experience began at the same time as his engineering practice. He was a charter member of Company A, Engineers, N. G. P., which was organized ten years ago. He saw service on the Mexican border as First Lieutenant of this Company, and remained in that position until November, 1916. In July, 1917, he was again called into service and was sent to Camp Hancock, Ga., with the 103d Regiment of Engineers. Before joining this regiment he attended a school for officers at Fort Sill, Okla., where he received special training in field fortifications. In December, 1917, he was commissioned Topographical Captain on the Regimental Staff, and in April, 1918, preceded his regiment by about six weeks to France, where he again attended an officers' training school. He rejoined his regiment on July 15, near Chateau Thierry and was killed near Fismes on Aug. 9, 1918. Lieutenant Martin F. Bowles Martin F. BOWleS, born Apr. 25, 1893, at Bonne Terre, Mo., and graduated from the Neodesha, Kans., High School, had finished all but one month of a four-year course in metallurgical engineering at the Missouri School of Mines, Rolla, Mo., when on May 12, 1917, he entered the first Officers' Training Camp at Fort Riley, Kans. At the close of the training period, he was commissioned a Sccond Lieutenant and assigned to Co. B, 355th Infantry, 89th Division, and stationed at Camp Funston. He left this camp with his company on May 21, 1918, and sailed from an eastern port on June 4, ayriving in England on June 15, 1918. After a short stay at a rest camp there, he proceeded to France. On August 14, he wrote that he was with Battalion Headquarters as Gout Officer, 1st Battalion, 355th Infantry, 89th Division. The last letter received from him, dated September 2, was written in his dugout and contained the following: "Here it is 2.45 a. M. Sitting in a dugout waiting for some patrols to report back in, I am writing this by the light of two candles." He was killed in action on the night of Sept. 3, 1918. The letter of notifi-

Tlze influence of zirconium hydride precipitate mprphology on the fructure of Zr-H alloys tested at strain rates of 10- sec at 20° and - 196°C and at strain rates of -500 sec.-1 at 20°C has been inves-tigated. The critical stage in the embrittlement of these alloys was the fracture of the zirconium hyhide precipitates to form large interval cracks at a stress of 25,000 10 137,000 psi. In specimens con-temping up to 100 ppm H the preciptates existed as isolafed platelets in the zirconium matrix and their fracture as enhanced by low temperature (—196°C) and high strain rate (-500 set-f) loading. These resl~lts lead to the conclusion that the rate of strain hardening of the zirconium metal controls the frac-tzrm of the hydride platelets. Increased hydrogen contents of 500 to 2000 ppm resulted in an increase in the 1)volume fraction and size of precipitates and crlso led to crack propogation in the hydride at both 20 and —196C at the low strain rates (10'* sec-'). Quenching led to refinerment of hydride precipitate size and reduced the degree of embrittlement at — 196°C; this effect is attributed to the absence of fracture of the fine precipitates. The formation of zirconium hydride precipitates has been shown to be the cause of hydrogen embrittlement of zirconium.' Several investigators'-" have studied the problem in broad outline, demonstrating that impact-loading conditions, testing temperatures below room temperature, and increasing hydrogen content produce increased brittleness. For example, Muehlenkamp and schwope2 showed that the transition temperature for notched impact tests was raised from 150" to 350°C on increasing the hydrogen content from 45 to 490 ppm. The degree of embrittlement is also controlled by the morphology of the zirconium hydride precipitates. The solubility of hydrogen in zirconium decreases from 600 ppm at 550°C to 10 ppm at 20"C,~ so that the form of the zirconium hydride precipitates (ZrH2) can be modified by varying the cooling rate through the Zr-aZr + ZrH2 phase boundary.= Forscher showed that quenching a specimen containing 35 ppm H from above 315°C resulted in a reduction in area of 70 pct at -196"C, whereas slowly cooling from above 315°C resulted in a ductility of half this value. The role of the hydride precipitate in the fracture process has been examined by Young and schwartz6 and more recently by westlake.' From metallo-graphic observations on slowly cooled Zr-H alloys they have suggested that cracks are nucleated in the hydride precipitates by the interactions of twins in the zirconium metal with the hydride. The experiments reported in this paper show that crack propagation in the zirconium hydride precipitates is the critical stage in the embrittlement of Zr-H alloys. The factors influencing fracture of the hydride precipitates and crack propagation in the zirconium metal will be related to the problem of embrittlement. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The zirconium used in these experiments was produced from an ingot of vacuum arc-melted iodide zirconium forged down to 1 in. diameter at 800' to 850°C. The accident occurred on Aug. 2, when the machine in which he was flying with Lieutenant Carsons fell from a height of 1500 ft.; Lieutenant Carsons was instantly killed, but Lieutenant Heine died from his injuries a week later. Lieutenant Heine was born at Mount Clemens, Mich., in 1895. After attending the local High School he entered the Michigan College of Mines, and became a Junior Member of the Institute while still a student. He graduated in 1916, with the degree of B. S. In 1914 he served as a transitman for the engineering department of the City of Hancock, Mich. Lieutenant Heine had been in the army since 1916, having been with the 'troops at 'the Mexican border. He had been in the Aviation Section since August, 1917.

SINCE the sixties, Utah has been one of the leading metal mining states of the Union. During the last fifteen years its mines have supported the largest smelting center in the world. Its rank as a metal producing state is reflected by its 1924 production which had a value in excess of $65,000,000 making it the leading silver producing state, third in both copper and lead and sixth in gold production. During the past year, metallurgical developments for the recovery of zinc contained in lead ores has made rapid progress so that the future zinc output will be of substantial importance. The largest silver mines of the nation and the world's largest open cut copper mine are within its borders. INTRODUCTION. IN considering the magnificent success of Mr. Gayley's Bold experiment of applying dry blast to the blast-furnace, whereby , saving of 20 per cent. of fuel per ton of iron is effected, the question arises whether, still further economy in fuel is possible, and, if so, how it is to be attained? The manner in which the heat generated in the furnace is utilized in the production of pig-iron may be determined, by the method of Bell and Gruner, for any furnace for which the necessary data are obtainable ; and the study of the operation,. tinder various conditions, of a number of furnaces, for which such information has been worked out., should enable us to form some conclusion on the subject. The tables and calculations given below cover the operations of several furnaces reported in our Transactions; also the two furnaces using natural and dry blast in ,Mr. Gayley's experiment, for which the heat-equation has been worked out by Prof. Joseph W. Richards in his admirable discussion' of Mr. Gayley's paper, The Application of Dry Air Blast to the Manufacture of Iron, and, finally, various hypothetical furnaces.. The data stated. for A and B in Table III. are those given by Professor Richards; except that the heat-units are given for one unit of iron instead of 100 units, and some items of heat supplied, as stated by Richards, have been subdivided, the total being the same as given by Richards. We remember him as a messmate, as a roommate, and when we rubbed shoulders with him on the square, for his kindly thought and unassuming manners. The Spanish grippe has claimed many from our depot. As we read down the names we pause here and there to recall some incident to establish permanently in our memory as a link to bind us, the living, with the dead. "And there's one name we cannot pass So we pause, and ponder awhile. And recall all his cheery words, And his smile—his perpetual smile." Men detained in the Quarantine Camp will have cause to remember him too, for he displayed his gentlemanly bearing and courtesy to all he came in contact with. Lieutenant Norman Lloyd Ohnsorg First Lieutenant Norman Lloyd Ohnsorg died in Nashville, Tenn., on Oct. 11, 1918. He mas born in St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 10, 1889, and lived in that city until he was 11 years of age when his parents removed to Iron Mountain, Mo., where he spent the next 6 years. On Jan. 10, 1906, he entered the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy at Rolla, Mo., and graduated from that institution in 1910, receiving both the Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering and the Engineer of Mines degrees. In 1912, he received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Metallurgy, and in 1916, the degree of Metallurgical Engineer. After leaving college he wae connected with the following companies: Noble Electric Steel Works, Heroult, Shasta Co., Cal.; Mammoth Copper Mining Co.. Kennett, Cal.; St. Joseph Lead Co., Herculaneum, Mo.; Granby Smelting & Mining Co., Neodesha, Kans.; The Phosphate Mining Co., Nichols, Fla. While with the last company, he volunteered, in April, 1917, for service in the engineering corps of the U. S. Army. He passed an excellent examination, was accepted and called to Washington and placed in Division T. of the Ordnance Department where he was engaged in research work pertaining to nitrogen. He was then ordered to Sheffield, Ala., where he was second in command of the construction of the Government nitrogen plants at Muscle Shoals. After the completion of the plants, he was ordered to Buffalo, N. Y., on Sept. 28, 1915, to inspect and report on a government plant. After completing this work, he was called back to Sheffield. He left Buffalo on Oct. 6, but delayed trains caused him to miss connections in Cincinnati where he had to wait 12 hours. He had not beedfeeling well for
