SINCE the, beginning of the year 1928 the senior authors and their associates have applied a series of procedures which makes possible the detailed study in situ of the formations traversed by a drill hole before the casing has been landed. They have given the name "electrical coring" to the ensemble of these processes, which now replace in a large measure the mechanical coring performed by the drillers, and permit the gathering of bottom-hole data hitherto unobtainable. Three years have elapsed since the technique and interpretation of these measurements emerged from the experimental stage and entered the field of industrial application on a large scale. The total length of drill holes so far surveyed by the authors and their associates, all over the world, amounts to several millions of feet. Practical and strongly built equipment has been evolved, which permits the examination in a short time of an open hole several thousand feet long. No comprehensive paper has yet been published discussing the essential principles of the processes applied and bringing into evidence their economic interest. This is the object of the present paper.1 Numerous examples of field work performed under varied geological conditions are given, constituting a concrete illustration of the services rendered by the new methods.

For many reasons, it appears that deep rooted, perennial shrubs offer potential for improved stabilization and provide maintenance free vegetative cover to harsh sites where perennial grasses have not been successful. The major objective was to select various shrub species of arid plants for initial soil stabilization of disturbed mining areas. The very fact that a drought-adapted shrub has a massive root system that can use moisture from a greater volume of mineral waste soil materials suggests that arid environment disturbed soils may be vegetatively stabilized using desirable forage shrubs. A secondary effort is underway to assemble information and plant materials of promising species from many arid regions of the world for reclamation of mined lands. Surprisingly, many of the better plants for arid sites are quite high in protein content. With proper management, breeding, and selection, they may prove to be very desirable livestock feed when mined lands are used in range land areas. Advancements in arid land solid waste stabilization hold favorable promise for many industries that mine and mill in arid regions for effective reclamation of disturbed areas. Particularly exciting is the possibility of establishment of high density maintenance free vegetative cover of climax vegetation that reclaims the disturbed area back to its original land use. Due to high shrub productivity, stabilization potential, nutritional quality, and reclamation success, greater use should be made of shrubs in disturbed land reclamation associated with mining and milling operations in harsh aril environments.

The useful minerals can be subdivided into two large groups. One comprises those which are mined because of their chemical composition. They represent the natural resources of certain materials or of energy (coal). The second group is used not because of their chemical composition but because of certain physical properties or combinations of physical properties. A large number of minerals are mined because of their hardness, their electrical and thermal properties, their color or plasticity. There has been increasing recognition of the value of mineral synthesis during the past 30 years. This is illustrated by the development of improved aircraft spark plugs and chemical porcelain about the time of the first World War. During World War II the impact of crystal chemistry upon ceramics became most pronounced. New ceramic bodies were tailor-made, such as those designed with a high dielectric constant and low power loss, for use in high-voltage, high-frequency communication. In the field of refractories special materials were needed for unusual heat-resisting service in jet and rocket engines, and in the processing of fissionable materials. UNDER the same justification that I spoke to you in the preceding chapter on crystal and some other gems, I can now speak much better and with much greater reason of glass, since it is one of the effects and peculiar fruits of the art of fire. Every product that is found [41v] in the interior of the earth is either stone or metal or one of the semiminerals, and glass, as is seen, resembles them all, although in all respects it is dependent upon art. Therefore it seems to me that before coming to the discussion of the arts themselves, I must treat of this very beautiful composition created by art and number it with the semiminerals. Thus in this chapter I shall speak to you of glass, not as a proper semimineral, nor yet as a metal, but as a fusible material that is almost made mineral by art and by the power and virtue of fire, born from the speculation of good alchemistic savants, through whose efforts it imitates. the metals on one hand and the transparency and splendor of gems. on the other. Certainly it is a very beautiful thing and one that should not be left buried in silence, in consideration first of how great a thing art has been, able to discover, and then because its beauty makes it such a pleasing thing for making drinking. glasses and an infinite number of other ornamental things that satisfy the desires of man. I shall begin, then, by telling you, to the credit of the alchemists, how I believe that this thing was found through their desire to make gems; for when they could not bring them to perfection (as also happened with the metals) they made this beautiful and attractive product, glass. However, Pliny says that it was found by chance in Syria at the mouth of the Belus River by certain merchants who were driven there by the fortunes of the sea and forced to stop and disembark there for a time in order to eat. In cooking the food they saw the rocks of that place converted into a flowing, lustrous material. And as they thought about this, it seemed beautiful to them, and when they went away they carried some stones and plants with them. Thus they gave beginning to glass making. But now leaving this discussion it does not matter how it may have been discovered, whether by merchants or by ingenious alchemists. COMPOSITION OF CHARGES AND CONSUMPTION OF FUEL AT VARIOUS WORKS. A MARKED peculiarity of most of the smelting-works of the Far West is the looseness with which accounts of the operations are kept. Indeed, probably over half of the works do not keep any detailed accounts at all, the yearly gross statement of profit or loss being considered sufficient for all purposes. The reasons for this must apparently be sought in the as yet unsettled state of all business relations, and in the deplorable fact that only in isolated cases educated metallurgists are in charge of the smelting-works. Continual and regular assays of the ores, by-products, and slags, are almost unknown, so that it is impracticable to ascertain, even approximately, the losses in the smelting processes. Of cases where regular accounts are kept of the quantities of ore smelted, of the composition of charges, and of the fuel consumed, I know only two or three. Under these circumstances it is extremely difficult to collect figures which cover the operations for a considerable length of time, and which are so valuable for the metallurgist, who wishes to get an insight into the economy of smelting operations, as shown by practice. Figures obtained by personal observation, which can of course cover only the brief space of the visit of the travelling metallurgist, must, therefore, be made to replace the more valuable data. The writer has had occasion, during the last and the preceding summer, to visit the larger number of the Western lead-smelting works, and offers, in the following pages, such data relating to the economy of lead-smelting in the blast furnace at various works, as he has been able to obtain. The only object in doing so is to place these figures on record, so that they may be from time to time supplemented with other data, which are now wanting. I. R. W. Christy (Manager of Sales, Sanitary Engineering Equipment, Link-Belt Co.) and C.D. Rubert (Barrett, Haentjens & Co.) — Messrs. King and Schepman have presented an excellent paper which outlines the general practice in the design of thickener mechanisms. Lifting devices, controls, special applications and underflow pumping arrangements have been reviewed in detail. Pumping arrangements were illustrated which eliminate the need for an expensive tunnel beneath the thickener floor. Most of those illustrated have the common feature of a relatively long underflow suction line extending from the hopper floor to the pump located on the bridge at the periphery of the tank. The authors limit these arrangements to comparatively dilute or thin slurrys. It is implied that dense and coarse concentrates, which are difficult to pump, cannot be handled unless a tunnel is constructed. Fig. 1 shows an underflow pump arrangement which negates the need for a tunnel but which permits the operator to convey a heavy dense slurry. The pump is mounted directly on the fixed hoist platform and the impeller is located at the base of the steel center column. Priming water is not needed. The column

The choking-free cyclone was developed primarily to remove solid particles suspended in a slurry containing fibrous materials, such as municipal solid waste. This cyclone is characterized by a screw conveyor at the underflow side of the cyclone. The screw conveyor has a hollow rotational shaft for air supply and is driven by a variable speed motor for discharge control. Even if the underflow discharge is highly concentrated, this type of cyclone can be stably operated without nozzle choking. High classification efficiency similar to that of a conventional cyclone can be obtained as a result of air introduction through the hollow rotational shaft. The recovery of organic matter and the removal efficiency of inorganic matter were actually improved by the application of this cyclone to municipal solid waste. After applying this cyclone to the desliming of fine sand, sand product of low water content was recovered.

I am deeply sensible of the honor you have conferred on me in electing me your president for this year. It is difficult to understand why I have merited such distinction at your hands, except that I may possibly have helped, in some small way, in the develop ment of metallurgical practice in the West. I fear, however, that I shall fall far shirt of the expectations you may have in regard to my fitness for such a position. The responsibility of preparing an address for this occasion has caused me considerable thought and anxiety. Unlike my predecessors in office, many of whom have dealt in their presidential addresses with subjects covering a wide field, which they could survey with the confidence born of their own extensive knowledge, I have been confined by my experience, during the last twenty-five years, almost wholly to that portion of metallurgical science which bears especially on the treatment of gold and silver. Yet perhaps some sort of general review of the progress of this branch of metallurgy in the West, besides being the contribution I feel myself best qualified to offer, may prove acceptable to many of the members of the Institute. Some few of the gentlemen present will remember the crude condition of metallurgical practice as it was conducted in Colorado only twenty-five years ago. My own personal experience covers a period of eighteen years; and during this comparatively short time I have seen the most astonishing changes in the conduct of metallurgical works. In all probability the marked progress which this country has exhibited could hardly be reached anywhere else, and this result has been achieved mainly by the activity and enterprise so characteristic of the men of the West. The first little successful attempt at smelting made at Black Hawk, in 1867, by Ex-Senator N. P. Hill, representing the Boston and Colorado Smelting Company, proved a great boon to the miners,

AT Bunker Hill the original charge storage and preparation system was installed in 1917 to accommodate lead-silver gravity mill products. Only minor tonnages of wet fines such as vanner and flotation concentrates were received. Charge flux and diluent requirements were provided by an ample supply of siderite middlings and coarse lime-rock. While oversize material was crushed through %-in., the use of roll crushers in series resulted in a more or less granular, free-running charge of adequate porosity. Under such conditions, receipts could be proportioned directly from receiving bins, and suitable blending was obtained by passing the resultant layered composite through a small Stedman disintegrator. This elementary system served well for production and smelting of an extremely lead-rich sinter, in the low column blast furnace. Here sinter physical quality is less critical, and appreciable quantities of raw flux and oxidized ore may be charged directly to the blast furnace without seriously impairing furnace capacity. Prior to 1938 the relative proportions of zinc receipts were low and extraneous flux requirements at a minimum. However, subsequent war-inflated zinc demands brought marked increase in fine concentrate and slimy zinc leach residue receipts and an abrupt introduction to smelting a more refractory zinciferous charge. The higher temperature demands of the more refractory zinciferous charge required a higher smelting column and the higher column, in turn, rendered the blast furnace less receptive to improperly prepared feed. Inadequate presinter processing facilities prevented the production of acceptable sinter, and blast furnace production declined to 50 pct of former capacity. In view of a prevailing contention among lead metallurgists as to the deleterious action of high zinc slag on blast furnace capacity, it was natural to overstress this factor and to concentrate on possible changes in furnace design. Another interpretation was that primary correction should be sought through expanded sintering facilities. This paper presents a series of equations for mechanical ball wear, relating parameters of ball size, mill speed, and mill diameter. The fundamental equation, Eq. 12, presented here is introduced to correlate these basic parameters and thus define and clarify the concept of ball wear. This equation is offered as a general rule, which may be modified to apply to individual problems of grinding. BALL wear as observed in grinding installations is the combined result of mechanical wear and corrosion. Corrosion should be a linear function of the ball surface available. Ball corrosion, however, has been studied so little that its effect, although of great importance, cannot be included in the analyses given here. In a mill running at a low speed, grinding is the result of rubbing action within the ball mass and between the ball mass and mill liners. When the speed of the mill is gradually increased toward the critical, the impacting effect of freely falling balls becomes increasingly prominent in comparison with the rubbing action. Reduction of ore takes place partly by rubbing, partly by impact. The share of the freely falling balls in the reduction of ore reaches its practical maximum at a speed somewhat less than the critical; at that speed grinding by rubbing has decreased to a low value. It may be reasonable to think that size reduction by freely falling balls should reach its theoretical maximum at the critical speed, if the fall of the balls were not hindered by the shell of the mill beyond the top point; grinding by rubbing would cease at the critical speed. As a first approximation, wear of freely falling balls may be considered to be a homogeneous, linear function of the force at which they strike pieces of rock and other balls at the toe of the ball charge. The force equals mass times acceleration. The mass of a ball is a function of d3 and its acceleration is a function of the peripheral speed of the mill. The writer has devoted a number of years to practical operations and to the study of geology in the oil fields. In consequence, he has been brought to investigate the theories advanced to account for the accumulation of oil and gas in commercial deposits. It is the result of these investigations and his personal conclusions that he wishes to sum up in this paper. The writer is an advocate of the organic origin of petroleum found in pools. He has been led to believe that the present theories of oil and gas accumulations are incomplete and, in certain respects, incorrect, although they may embody certain elements of truth; that the forces that are called upon to explain the movement are only secondary forces in the process, and insufficient, by themselves, to cause this movement; and that the phenomenon of accumulation is of much larger order than heretofore admitted and bears an intimate relation with the general as well as with the local deformations of the crust and is a direct consequence and a mechanical effect of these deformations to which the term " diastrophie " has been applied. As a complement to this theory, the writer offers a new interpretation of the "rock pressure" and of the mechanism of the "sealing up" of this pressure in oil and gas pools. The Anticlinal Theory The theory most generally accepted to account for the accumulation of hydrocarbons in commercial deposits is the anticlinal or structural theory. This theory, the principles of which have been laid down by I. C. White, Orton, Winehell and others, and which has since been modified and perfected, is too well known to need a detailed statement. The authors presented an article2† last year on colloidal properties of clay suspensions in which they attempted to sustain the position that the behavior of clay suspensions is due primarily to the mechanical interference of the platy particles, the nature and extent of the interference being profoundly influenced by the character of the surfaces of the particles, which in turn is determined primarily by the nature and amount of adsorbed foreign materials held on the surface of the particles by forces which are predominantly chemical in type. The following discussion is a continuation of that article to extend these same interpretative points of view to the behavior of clay gels. Insight into the mechanism of gelation is certainly of outstanding importance in the handling of drilling muds. In the former article it was suggested that the thin, flat plates that constitute the ultimate clay particles may build up aggregates by the overlapping of the ultimate plates face to face much longer and perhaps also much wider than the ultimate plates themselves, but not appreciably thicker. Exhaustive microscopic examinations of characteristic clays show no tendency for the larger particles, clearly visible under the microscope, to orient themselves in this way. It is true that the gelation of the clays is due primarily to the smallest particles, unresolvable other than by the ultramicroscope, so that the possibility of the deve1opment by them of an overlapping structure is not excluded. Furthermore, as one approaches the limit of resolving power of the microscope, the difficulty of observing accurately the shapes and relative positions of particles incresses excessively. However, in the absence of any observable tendency toward overlapping orientation of the large, visible particles, one hesitates to ascribe such a tendency to the smaller particles beyond the range of visibility. Should it develop that one must exclude the assumption of overlapping orientation, the explanations offered in the previous article are changed in only one respect; namely, one would now have to assume that the ultimate particles themselves have length, and probably also width, very large in comparison with their thickness.

WITH portions of two coal basins within its borders and a few scattered fields already developed, the question arises: What is the future of Ken-tucky as an oil-producing State? Is the long list of failures due to lack of 'commercial pools, or unintelligent prospecting? A study of its beds and irregularities of structure points not only to a large waste of development money on unpromising areas, but also to the presence of a few structures well worthy of development. The surface rocks of Kentucky show in succession more than 4,000 ft. of Paleozoic sediments and more than 2,000 ft. of Cretaceous, Tertiary, and more recent deposits. Folding and erosion have brought these beds to the surface, where they have been observed and studied: in detail by my associate, James H. Gardner, myself, and others. This has given opportunity to observe the beds offering suitable reservoirs and having the proper impermeable covering; also the mapping of outcrops and outcrop lines, taken in conjunction with available well records, indicates that certain areas are worth testing, and with even greater definiteness shows areas which should be excluded, as devoid of possibilities. West of the Tennessee River, Cretaceous, Tertiary, and Quaternary sediments occur so that all trace of ancient folding is obliterated, the sediments overlapping unconformably Mississippian rocks. This area embraces 2,000 square miles, or one-twentieth of the area of the State, the Paleozoic rocks covering the remainder. Since there is nothing upon which to base the location of tests for oil and gas in the Cretaceous-Tertiary beds of Kentucky, the Paleozoic area will be chiefly considered.

The temperature and pressure dependence of the reaction of tantalum in oxygen were investigated from 500° to 1000°C at pressures from 10 mm Hg to 600 psi total oxygen pressure. Tantalum was found to oxidize linearly under the above conditions. Three distinct regions of temperature dependence were found with different energies of activation. From 500° to 600°C the rate of oxidation of tantalum was found to be essentially independent of the oxygen pressure at the pressure investigated. The oxidation rate increases rapidly with an increase in pressure from 600' to 800°C. The dependence of the oxidation rate on the bulk concentration may be expressed by V = k'?, where k' is the specific rate constant and ?=k1Co2/(l + K1Co2), where k, is the equilibrium constant for the adsorption of oxygen on tantalum. ONLY a limited amount of data has been presented in the literature on the oxidation behavior of tantalum metal. Some values of its oxidation rate were reported in the Corroston Handbook' and by McAdams and Geil.' The first extensive investigation of tantalum was the work of Gulbransen and Andrews." They determined the reaction rates of tantalum in O2 and N2. Their results indicate that this metal follows the parabolic law in the temperature range of 250" to 450°C in O2 at pressures of 7.6 cm Hg with an activation energy of 27,400 cal per mol. In nitrogen, the metal follows the parabolic law from 500" to 800°C at 7.6 cm pressure. All experimental determinations were of 2 hr or less duration and deviations from the parabolic rate conceivably could occur at longer times. A spectrophotometric study of the oxidation of tantalum by Waber, Sturdy, Wise, and Tipton' indicated good agreement between this method and the microbalance technique. The experiments were conducted in air from 220" to 350°C. The metal was found to follow the logarithmic law up to 320°C and the parabolic law at higher temperatures. The activation energies in the logarithmic region were reported as 12.57 kcal per mol and 12.0 kcal per mol, respectively, for the microgravimetric and spectrophotometric methods. In the parabolic region the activation energy was found to be 27.2 kcal per mol, in good agreement with the value of Gulbransen and Andrews." The present paper is concerned with the behavior of tantalum from 500" to 1000°C in oxygen at pressures ranging from 1/2 to 40.8 atm pressure. Earlier preliminary data by McKewan5,6 indicated the following facts concerning the behavior of tantalum: 1—At temperatures from 500" to 600°C, the metal followed the linear law. 2—At 575°C the rate of oxidation was found to increase with O2 pressure. 3—The Arrhenius plot in this temperature region was nonlinear. The nonlinearity of the Arrhenius plot was indicative of a more complex behavior than originally suspected for this metal.

With the recent advances which have been made in science and technology and the increased use of mathematics in this area, the question of the best mathematics courses for a mining engineer to take is of major importance. The question becomes even more difficult to answer due to the recent increase in the number of different mathematics courses in the last two decades offered by the mathematics departments. Therefore, the National Study of Mathematics Requirements for Scientists and Engineers (NSMRSE) was designed to provide some answers to these questions. Approximately 10,000 scientists and engineers were selected for the Study, These individuals were placed in two categories: (1) The Awards Group, recipients of national honors or awards and those recommended by the members of the Board of Advisors as having national and international reputations in their areas of specialization and (2) The Abstracts Group, persons exceptionally productive in their research, based on the number of journal articles listed in the last five years in the Engineering Index, Scientific and Technological Aerospace Reports, Chemical Abstracts, Biological Abstracts, and the Physics Abstracts. The NSMRSE Course Recommendation Form and the Instruction and Course Content Sheet were constructed with the aid of the Board of Advisors and other consultants. For the Study, 40 courses were selected by the mathematical consultants. In order to make sure that the basic content of the mathematics courses was the same for all respondents, a brief resume of each of the 40 courses was given. The NSMRSE Course Recommendation Form consisted of seven sections. These sections were as follows: Section 1, 38 different specializations; Section 2, orientation of work (applied through theoretical); Section 3, highest degree obtained; Section 4, place of employment (academic, nonacademic); Section 5, administrative capacity (administrative or nonadministrative); Section 6, age groups (five-year intervals). Section 7 contained the 40 courses which were to be marked according to five categories: (1) Course Length, 3 to 36 weeks; (2) Applied-Theoretical Orientation, a five-point scale; (3) Course Level, freshman through graduate; (4) Knowledge of Course; and (5) Use of Course Content in Work. The Analysis The report of the data is based on the replies received from 44 mining engineers. This group was part of the Awards and Abstracts Group for all engineers. The resume of the recommended courses is reported in quintiles (upper fifth to lower fifth), since recommendations of this kind are not precise. The results of the Study are based on recommendations of the most active research men in engineering in the U.S. today; therefore, the reader should realize that these course recommendations represent an upper bound of mathematics requirements for the Ph.D. in both undergraduate and graduate work. Conclusions and Recommendations 1) Mining engineering students who plan to be active research specialists should take all those courses which are "very highly recommended" (80-10070) and "highly recommended" (60-79.9%). Those courses in the upper two quintiles and recommended by most mining engineers are: first-year calculus, third-semester calculus, elementary differential equations, applied statistics, and machine computation. Courses of "moderate recommendation" (40-59.9%) are: vectors, intermediate ordinary differential equations, the first course in partial differential equations, elementary probability, and linear programming. 2) The great majority of mining engineers indicated that they prefer a course which is concerned primarily with applications. Only the standard courses such as first-year college mathematics, calculus, differential equations, and advanced calculus received a recommendation for 50% theory and 50% practice. Therefore, all mathematics courses given to mining engineers should contain many applications and little theory. Engineers in both the applied and the combination (ap-plied-theoretical) groups indicated a definite need for applications in all courses. 3) In general, recommendations were for mathematics courses to be given for short intervals of time such as 3, 6, or 12 weeks. Only the standard courses mentioned previously received the usual one-semester or one-year recommendation. Therefore, it is of value to combine several related courses into a one or two-semester course so that the mining engineering student could acquire important mathematical knowledge at an early date in order to prepare him for his research. 4) There was little use for the newer courses in modern mathematics such as the functional analysis sequence, the modern algebra sequence, and the group theory sequence. In addition, there were uniformly very low recommendations (0-19.9%) for multilinear algebra, complex variables, mathematical logic, special functions, integral equations, approximation theory, analytic mechanics, integral transforms, and geometric algebra. Therefore, these courses should be given a low priority. 5a) Comparisons among mining engineers with different backgrounds showed that the combination ap-plied-theoretical group recommended more mathematics than the applied group. 5b) There was little difference in recommendations between the administrative group and the nonadminis-trative group. 5c) Analysis of age groups showed that those in the lower age groups gave significantly higher recommendations to courses such as the first course in partial dif-

The use of froth flotation for the separation of minerals has become one of the most important of ore dressing processes. Its particular adaptability to the enrichment of low grade ores has made the process an important factor in the national economy. The methods have been extended to the recovery of a great number of minerals. Among the few minerals which have resisted efforts toward industrial flotation is chrysocolla, a hydrated partly colloidal copper silicate. Chrysocolla, being a product of natural oxidation, has been found to occur in small quantities with many ores which are recovered by flotation methods. In present practice, these small quantities of copper silicate pass off with the tailings and are lost. The advantages to be gained by a satisfactory process for the recovery of chrysocolla is apparent. Any application of principles which points a way toward the satisfactory industrial flotation process for copper silicate would be of advantage. This paper presents an attack on this problem. Two methods for the recovery of chrysocolla have been developed by the United States Bureau of Mines.1,2 They have been successful on a laboratory scale but have been seriously restricted in industrial application by critical requirements in the procedure. In one of the Bureau of Mines methods,' the ore is activated with sodium or hydrogen sulphide in an aqueous solution at a pH of 4. Amy1 xanthate is then used as a collector with pine oil as a frother in the flotation process. An excess of sulphide acts as a depressant and the state of optimum conditions is difficult to control industrially. In the second Bureau of Mines method,2 soap is used as the collector at a pH of between 8 and 9. The diffi- culties with this process are that soap is not a specific collector, that heavy metal or alkaline earth ions cause the formation of insoluble soaps, and that a more acid solution causes the formation of a free acid which does not act as a collector for chrysocolla. The problem of recovering chrysocolla by flotation involves the selection of a suitable collector. The collector molecule must be composed of an active polar group that has an attraction for chrysocolla, and of a hydrocarbon chain. Certain dyes have been shown to have an attraction for certain minerals. Suida3 found that hydrated silicates are colored by basic dyes. Dittler4 showed that chrysocolla, among other colloidal minerals of acid reaction, preferentially takes up such basic dyes as fuchsin B, methylene blue, and methyl green. Endell5 gave information to show that the colloidal material in clay may be determined by its selective adsorption of fuchsin. A simple experiment, likewise, illustrates the difference in the adsorptive power of chrysocolla and of silica for the basic triphenyl methane dyes. When a mixture of chrysocolla and silica is immersed in a very dilute dye solution, less than 5 ppm, the chryso-colla is rapidly dyed and the silica is dyed more slowly. The difference is substantial but one of degree. Dean2 showed that the dyes, crystal violet and toluidine blue, are taken up by quartz in an adsorption type process. The difference in the adsorptive power, however, offers the means by which a new collector may act. To form such a collector, a hydrocarbon chain must be attached to the dye molecule. This involves a process of organic synthesis. Butyl, hexyl, and octyl hydrocarbon chains were selected for substitution in the malachite green molecule. For the purpose of identification, the alkyl-substituted dyes formed are called: butyl-malachite green; hexyl- malachite green; and octyl-malachite green. An outline of the procedure for their synthesis is given in the appendix. It is generally recognized in the preparation of this type of dye that the chemical structure of some of the dye molecules varies. However, a uniform formula is attributed to the dye. Such a procedure has been followed in specifying the structure of these alkyl-substi-tuted malachite green dyes. The structure is given on the basis of their properties as an homologous series of dyes, on their method of preparation, and on the purity of intermediates used. FLOTATION has been so closely allied with the sulfide minerals and their early and associated oily reagents that the term "oil flotation" has erroneously been applied to the entire flotation process. Today, the term "chemical flotation" might be used to advantage. Flotation literature has dealt primarily with the removal of sulfides from non-sulfide gangues, and the separation of one sulfide from another. Now, the application of the process to the separation of nonsulfide minerals is coming to the fore; and from the standpoint of the number of commercial minerals involved, the flotation of nonsulfides offers the larger field. Here, soap or soap-forming substances, such as the fatty acids and their derivatives, are used; hence there may well be a subdivision of the chemical flotation process called "soap flotation." Early experimenters learned that it was easy to form a froth or foam that would carry a part or all of the ore charge over the lip of the flotation machine; but this could not be regarded as flotation because of the lack of selectivity. Doubtless soap was one of the first reagents tried, and doubtless it was rejected on account of its gangue-carrying properties. Now this same gangue-carrying ability makes soap an acceptable reagent, for we are dealing with that, which among sulfides, is considered "gan-gue." As in the flotation of sulfides, so in the flotation of nonsulfides, the selective flocculation of the mineral and the dispersion of the gangue are the first objectives. In fact, these two phenomena epitomize flotation. They depend upon the unlike surface properties of the respective miner-als; and as long as the components of an ore have unlike surface proper-ties, a separation is possible, at least in theory. Often in nonsulfide flotation it makes little difference which mineral floats and which is depressed; generally only a separation is sought.

THE development of huge production facilities and of new or improved processes for manufacturing magnesium from its raw sources has been an outstanding achievement of this war. Furthermore, at least one new method has reached a stage of pilot production that offers promise. Its potentialities seem to indicate that a reduction in cost and simplification or elimination of problems incident to the use of at least one of the present processes are quite within the realm of possibility. Although magnesium of very high purity (99.9 per cent and higher) is obtained, and the rate of recovery reasonable (60 to 70 per cent), the ferrosilicon reduction process is open to a serious objection, which at the time its use was proposed was thought to be sufficient to raise some doubts as to its success, at least on a high production basis. The temperature range at which the reaction is carried out-namely, 2100° to 2150°F.-is very close to the failure temperature of the material of which the retort is made. It is so close that for a time it was assumed it might make commercial use of the process an impossibility. However, at the time under discussion, the demand for magnesium was so great that it was felt by those who had to go ahead and produce this essential metal that the emergency warranted their taking a chance on this process. Subsequent developments have fully justified the soundness of their decision. Fortunately for the war effort, when the plants were put into operation it was discovered that although the retorts did collapse in rather short periods of time, as predicted, they could be blown back into operable shape by application of high-pressure air. This practical method of operation so relieved the situation that the problem disappeared. Nevertheless, if the process had not been successful, or the production of magnesium by the electrolytic process had not been able to keep pace with demands, our war program would have been seriously impaired. "FIRELESS COOKER" PROCESS For this reason a program was set up and assigned for the development of a new method that had been suggested to the War Production Board in 1941. It is believed justifiable in terming the method "new" for several reasons: (1) while utilizing the same (ferrosilicon) process as the Pidgeon, hence involving similar reactions, the type of retort or furnace is essentially different, (2) the method of operation, reaction temperatures, etc., differ materially, and, most important of all, (3) the problems to be overcome in making the process successful were not and could not have been anticipated by anything previously known about the Pidgeon process.
