Mid-ocean ridges host approximately 65 per cent of about 100 known sites of high-temperature venting and polymetallic sulfide deposits; most of them are located at the East Pacific Rise (EPR), while more diverse mineralisation styles occur at the Mid-Atlantic Rise (MAR). Seafloor hydrothermal activity at the EPR are related to MORB while different substrates, including MORB and ultramafic intrusive rocks, are associated with æblack smokersÆ at the MAR. Depth of hydrothermal activity ranges from 0.7 to 4.3 km. High-temperature vents precipitating Cu-Fe sulfides (chalcopyrite and isocubanite, rare bornite), pyrrhotite, pyrite (¦ marcasite), and sphalerite, and low-temperature edifices precipitating marcasite (with pyrite), sphalerite, barite, andsubordinate chalcopyrite (pyrrhotite and isocubanite are absent) occur in both environments. There are considerable differences in Fe, Zn, Cu, Ag, Au and trace element contents in ores and in theFeS contents in Zn-sulfides in these deposits. Acomparison with anhydrite and sulfide minerals precipitating from modern black smoker fluids sulfide reveals many similarities but also some important differences. Fluids with salinity values above and below that of seawater at 400¦C down to 130 - 170¦C deposited sulfide minerals. Mantle-derived He prevails in fluids trapped by sulfides in EPR 9¦N and 21¦N hydrothermal systems. Hydrothermal fluids in MAR and back-arc systems are richer in radiogenic 4He. The sulfur isotope composition varies in the different hydrothermal fields and within zones of a chimney. EPR sulfides display narrower range of d34S values, while MAR and back-arc sulfides can bedepleted and enriched in the heavier d34S isotope. The most important finding is that fluid temperature, salinity, R/Ra ratios and d34S values ranged more significantly in the polymetallic sulfide deposits than when measured directly on venting fluids. Safety is paramount in the underground mining environment. The mining industry has for many years focused on injury prevention in the workplace through procedures and training. In the area of control of major accident events that could result in single or multiple fatalities, and serious injuries, the mining industry approach has concentrated mainly on past experiences and lessons learnt. However, in the last 20 years, other high hazard industries, such as the chemical process industry and oil and gas industry have developed the Safety Case approach, using systems safety techniques and risk assessment as a means of identification and control of major accident events. The Safety Case approach is now being introduced into Australian underground mining. This paper describes the Safety Case approach and how this can be adapted to underground mining. This is a holistic approach and assists in ranking significant risk contributors and prioritising risk management efforts. The discussion includes how the Safety Management System interfaces with the Formal Safety Assessment in effectively controlling the hazards. It provides examples from actual case studies conducted by KBR, and suggests ways forward for the industry.

The Project Financing Industry is currently being expanded en- compassing greater competition due to the improved worldwide economy. This has meant that money is in greater supply than demand for both loan and equity investment and is available for larger and higher risk ventures. The consequence of this is that the Project Financing Industry should be better able to provide more innovative forms of financing to meet the needs of mining and petroleum companies, regardless of size. Large mining and petroleum companies in Papua New Guinea should therefore be looking for ways to raise equity funds for exploration in greenfield areas, diversifying their risks through acquisition, and seeking to reduce their costs of borrowings. The small to medium sized mining sector should be looking to raise equity for increased ex- ploration on tenements and, where possible, to raise borrowings to fund expansion and further development of their projects. In summary, it is a period during which companies should take ad- vantage of available funding to augment their strategic plans and increase their long term returns to shareholders.

The evolution of mineral sand mine rehab ilitation techniques have been techniqually based. Research and investigations have been carried out by government authorities, mining companies and academic institutions. Protection of the physical and biological environments is a vital part of any mine oper- ation. The Mineral Sands Mining Industry in New South Wales is successfully working within the State's environmental framework and is meeting; community requirements and expectations concerned with the environment and mine rehab- ilitation. The JORC Code, which has been in existence as a Code incorporated in the listing rules of the Australian Stock Exchange and New Zealand Stock Exchange since 1989 and 1992 respectively, has been revised and will be re-released in 2003. This revision followed a call for submissions in December 2001, the publication of an exposure draft in late-2002 and an exposure period during which a large number of constructive comments were received. These comments were reviewed and a further exposure draft released as part of the current exposure draft of the ASX listing rules. It is anticipated that the final Code will be incorporated into the stock exchanges listing rules in late-2003. The 1999 JORC Code has been the standard on which other reporting Codes have been based, each of which has contained refinements. Three in particular, the Reporting Code from the United Kingdom/Ireland/Western Europe, the new Canadian Reporting standards and the SAMREC Code from South Africa, influenced JORC in the preparation of the 2003 JORC Code. Whilst there are differences between the 1999 Code and the 2003 Code, these changes are mainly in the guidelines. The Code definitions, which are largely in accord with agreed international definitions, remain substantially unchanged. The two main changes in the 2003 Code are the requirement for a Competent Person to be responsible for the documentation relating to the reporting of Exploration Results, and the introduction of æRecognised Overseas Professional OrganisationsÆ as overseas organisations to which Competent Persons may belong. Other changes include: clarification of the reporting of exploration targets or potential; the rearrangement of the diamond reporting clauses; the introduction of guidelines for the reporting of Industrial Minerals; modification of the coal clauses and recognition of the new Coal Guidelines; and the introduction of a guideline encouraging the discussion of relative accuracy and confidence in resource/reserve estimates. Other lesser changes to the Code are listed and discussed briefly. The release of the 2003 JORC Code maintains the standard set by JORC as a world leader in the development of mineral reporting Codes and their adoption by industry.

Advanced computer aided geological modelling techniques are now available to the geologist to allow the rapid evaluation of a gold orebody at various stages of its development. The types of grade estimation techniques used change during the various stages as the density of drilling and knowledge of the deposit increases. At the prospect evaluation stage drillhole intercept selection techniques are coupled with preliminary 2D (vein or layer) modelling or 3D block modelling techniques to arrive at a geological resource estimate. At the prefeasibility and feasibility stages more sophisticated 2D and 3D modelling techniques, such as domain controlled grade interpolation with anisotropy, are used along with interactive open pit and underground mine design, to calculate recoverable reserves. At the production stage closely spaced blasthole sample data is modelled quickly and coupled with interactive grade control facilities. Shot volumes, tonnages and grade estimates can be databased to provide reconciliation figures. These modelling techniques are embodied in MINEX-3D, an Australian software system which, with the emergence of the 386-based PC and high resolution (VGA or better) graphics, makes a whole range of advanced geological modelling techniques available to most exploration and mine geologists.

The world-class Bulyanhulu gold deposit (375 t Au) is in the Sukumaland greenstone belt, Northwestern Tanzania. The main mineralised quartz vein structure, termed Reef one, occurs at the contact of felsic metavolcanic rocks on the hanging wall and mafic metavolcanic rocks on the footwall. Reef one is dominated by massive quartz together with pyrite, pyrrhotite and minor chalcopyrite. Alteration in the footwall basalt is characterised by extensive chloritisation, calcification and silicification, which is strongest near the vein. Sericitisation also locally occurs adjacent to the vein. Metamorphic hornblende and plagioclase (albite) increase in abundance at a distance of 120 m from the vein and reflect the gradation into less altered rocks. The increasing abundance of chlorite, calcite, quartz and local sericite near Reef one, coupled by replacement textures suggests that most of these footwall minerals are the product of hydrothermal alteration, rather than regional metamorphism. Geochemical data shows slight enrichment in Ca, Fe and As towards the vein, whereas Zn in several drill holes becomes enriched away from Reef one. The Bulyanhulu gold deposit is a quartz-pyrite-chalcopyrite shear controlled vein with an adjacent extensive chlorite-quartz-calcite hydrothermal alteration zone (and a limited local sericite alteration zone) that passes to a hornblende-albite metamorphic assemblage further into the footwall.

The capital cost of major items of mining equipment is very high. The operating cost of such equipment is also high. It is therefore important that such expensive equipment is used productively. To this end mine management uses production data systems and management accounting systems to monitor events and provide data for analysis to enable management to make operating and business optimisation decisions. This could be done better if there was an understanding of productivity in terms of its utilisation and efficiency components. What has been missing has been a methodology to properly account for the productivity of equipment in terms of its contribution in dollars to the costs and profit of the mine. An explanation of the Productivity Accounting methodology will be given. It will then be shown that productivity has two components, that of capacity utilisation and efficiency. These are defined and the dollar contribution of each to costs and profit shown. The efficiency component tracks the effect of proportional changes in input cost quantities used in the mining process as mining production changes. The capacity utilisation component tracks the effect of step changes in the input cost quantities used in the mining process as mining production changes.

A programme began in 1970 to eliminate the charging of fine materials into the copper blast furnace of The Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia Ltd. at Port Kembla, N.S.W. A disc pelletiser and drying plant has been installed as part of this programme. Feed material for the plant is a blended mixture of copper concentrates, fine copper-bearing residues, and blast furnace cyclone dust. The operating parameters for the disc have been calculated by comparing the perform- ance of three other discs on the plant. Re- search work on choice of binder, feed moisture and drying conditions has led to the production of reasonably high strength pellets. A description of the pellet plant and modifications necessary to overcome the initial performance problems is given.

Surface tailings are finely ground waste materials produced in all mines after the mineral or metal has been removed from the metallurgical process. Current methods for disposal of tailings involve constructing dams, dumping into existing waterways, and depositing as backfill underground. Each method has its drawbacks in terms of cost, level of complexity, safety and environmental concerns. Backfilling is the process whereby waste material (generally metallurgical tailings, prepared aggregates or a combination) is placed from the surface back underground into open mine workings via conveyor belts, hydraulic or pneumatic pipes or gravity. In the backfill process common difficulties are expensive placement costs, equipment wear and the ability to meet early and long-term strength requirements. Traditional tailings transportation in pipes involves the use of water as the transport medium. Foam technology involves the introduction of micro-air bubbles that replace the water as the main transport medium. This air can be removed after placement if necessary, by the addition of a defoaming agent. This could produce an under-saturated stable cake. Foam technology has the potential to revolutionise surface tailings disposal and backfilling by providing a less expensive and environmentally safe alternative to those just described.

Twenty years of effort in developing the use of computers in the design and control of mineral treatment circuits has resulted in a sound base for future widespread application of the techniques.. The intent of this paper is to speculate to some extent about future applications of computer related techniques in the mineral extraction industries. The use of simulation methods for the analysis and design of circuits is discussed. In the area of process control, computers have been largely devoted to process monitoring and reporting tasks. The application of computers for the total control and optimization of complete plants is considered. Finally, the role of computer based modelling studies for definitions of optimum treatment flowsheets is suggested.

The large El Cerrejon coal open pit in north east Columbia has been developed over the last decade in a remote, entirely new mining area with hitherto unskilled inhabitants. Now over 200 pieces of heavy equipment operate with high reliability and availability due to successful theoretical training and skill improvement programs tuned to the specific reliability needs of the worksite and environment. The process of continuous improvement adopted promises further competitive advantages of the project.

Several important, fundamental aspects of the grinding behaviour of mineral systems are addressed. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained non-linear equations was used to solve the steady-state and dynamic population balance model (PBM) grinding equations to obtain the mill matrices and grinding selection and breakage rate functions, respectively. The fact that the PBM model equation Inverse Problem is degenerate or underspecified is demonstrated. Multiple solutions to the same PBM equations are provided. It is shown that there is no unique solution to the Inverse Problem unless additional constraints are provided or assumptions are made such as the Arbiter-Bhrany normalisation assumption. The severity of the non-uniqueness problem for steady state grinding is demonstrated in several examples using typical feed distributions and mill matrices. In addition, it is also demonstrated that when higher than single powers are used in steady-state mill matrix expressions during simulation or calculation (or iterative procedures are used during numerical simulation) and four or more size intervals are used considerable amount of error is propagated throughout any calculation. Each solution to a PBM, while giving the same prediction during a single mill pass, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition upon subsequent passes. In addition, it is shown that there is a problem with building up a grinding mill knowledge base with PBMs. A similar analysis was done for the dynamic or kinetic PBM equations. The fact that the dynamic PBM Problem is degenerate or underspecified is also demonstrated. Multiple solutions to the same dynamic PBM equations are provided. Again, it is shown that there is no unique solution to the Inverse Problem unless additional constraints are provided or assumptions are made such as the normalisation assumption. Each solution to a dynamic PBM, while giving the same prediction for a given grinding time interval, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition for other grinding times. Actual experimental grinding data was assessed to determine the functionality of mill selection and breakage functions. The functionalities obtained through constraints were compared with those obtained with the normalisation assumption of Arbiter-Bhrany which relates breakage functions to particle size distribution. The capability of the population balance model to predict grinding behavior over time in various mineral grinding systems was assessed. The required functionality of selection and breakage functions for effective prediction of grinding behavior in mineral systems is discussed.

Various ways for applying the X-ray fluorescent method to process lump-by lump separation of secondary aluminium raw materials (scrap, slags, waste) as well as ferrosilicon and ferrochromium are being considered and physically demonstrated. A commercial X-ray radiometric sorter has been developed for processing secondary raw materials. Marketable quantities of aluminium scrap with appropriate copper and zinc content have been produced for smelting with a minimal additional of pure aluminium. An industrial complex for scrap processing, incorporating two X-ray radiometric sorters from the Hammermils company is successfully operating at one of the works in Russia.

The classical view of island arc geology is that of a plutonic intrusive/volcanic extrusive complex, derived from the products of oceanic lithosphere subdu.ction and constructed on an over-riding plate of oceanic origin. Such an arc is typically backed by a marginal basin, formed by seafloor spreading of a more or less conventional kind. Various studies undertaken over the last decade have modified this picture and provided a new tectonic framework within which to explore for resources. Formation of Marginal Basins During the 1970s, seafloor spreading magnetic anomalies were identified in various marginal basins in the SW Pacific. In one of these, the South Fiji Basin, there was clear evidence of a ridge-ridge-ridge triple junction, although no kinematic relationship to the major plate boundaries was determined. Palaeomagnetic studies conducted in Vanuatu and Fiji, and in the Bismarck Archipelago of PNG provided evidence of large scale arc rotations relative to major plates. This indicated a general pattern of marginal basin formation by ridge-ridge-ridge triple junction growth together with island arc growth by trench-ridge-trench triple junction evolution. Formation of Primitive Island Arcs The triple junction growth model strongly suggests that at least a significant amount of arc evolution occurs by the initiation of subduction at a spreading ridge. This has predictive implications for the nature of island arc basement.

The principles of occupational risk evaluation resulting from the improper ventilation of the underground mines were presented. It was shown that the risk level implies the appropriate planning and usage of prevention methods. That approach is fundamental in the ventilation, fire and climate safety management in the copper ore mines. The paper uses the adequately modified Risk Score method.

The economic valuation of mineral prospects usually involves DCF analysis of expected revenues and costs. Traditional approaches deal with price uncertainty by considering different price scenarios and may even consider cases where prices drop sufficiently for production to be suspended temporarily. This paper outlines recent extensions to the methodology derived from finance theory. We present a simple analytical model that focuses on the value of operational flexibility where future prices are uncertain.

Recent works suggest that dehydration of subducting slab and consequent hydration and partial melting influences the dynamics of mantle wedge. Plums originating form the subducting slab due to Rayleigh-Taylor instability are responsible for heterogeneous composition of the mantle wedge. Also, occurrence of partial melt in the mantle wedge can trigger dynamic processes like exhumation of UHP rocks in intra-oceanic settings or can influence characteristics of the subduction tectonic regime. There appears to have been a swing away from the study of mathematics, the physical sciences, foreign languages and the classical humanities subjects by many students in high schools in Victoria. The same trend is believed to be occurring in other states as well. This has the direct result of many students entering tertiary studies inadequately prepared academically. This is particularly true in engineering and commerce. The position as far as postgraduate training in the areas of concern to the minerals industry is critical with almost no Australian nationals undertaking advanced technological studies.
