A process for eliminating nickel from electrolytic zinc plant solutions by precipita- tion with dimethylglyoxime (DMG) was developed to enable the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited (EZ) to treat nickel-bearing zinc dust precipitates. These precipitates are leached to recover their Cd and Zn content. The final Zn bearing solutions contain relatively high Ni concentra- tions (20-100 mg/1) and are treated with DMG and then neutralized to pH 4.6-4.8. The pre- cipitate is filtered off and the solution returned to circuit. DMG consumption is about 200% of theo- retical requirement, and Ni removal is 80% complete overall.

Dealing with Aboriginals and various others purporting to represent them has become part and parcel of exploration and mining in Australia, whereas 20 years ago it was not. The author has been involved in dealings with Aboriginal groups over this period. The following paper is a summary of the social background to such dealings and a compendium of rules for the newcomer to this aspect of the resource industry.

The Greenvale Joint Venturers, Metals Exploration Queensland Pty. Ltd. and Freeport Queensland Nickel Incorporated, use ten Herreshoff roasters, for the reduction of ground lateritic nickel and cobalt containing ores.Initially the roasting section of the plant limited production, due to high down time.The use of technology developed and adapted over a number of years has achieved significant increase in on line time and a minimization of costs.

Suppression of the explosion of the world population and the surprising increase of waste and emissions are major targets confronting mankind in this century. Recycling and waste minimisation are key words for sustainable development in a highly industrial society. The argument is really whether or not recycling done well is the solution to the environment problem for the following generation. If energy is not necessary in the recycling, all materials have to be recycled. The greatest interest among the environmental issues is the regulation of CO2 gas emission. It must be recognised that it is not possible to completely renew expended energy. Some of the recycling systems currently used are thought to increase the load on the environment rather than to be beneficial. Although metal industries have consumed tremendous amount of energy and discharged a large quantity of CO2 and solid waste, the metals have supported a high quality of life. The metal production industries such as the iron and steel industry and the non-ferrous metals industry can work well recycling of not only metals but also other materials without consuming more energy. Waste plastics, for example, are use as a reductant in a blast furnace. The role of metallurgical industry in the recycling-based society is introduced in the present paper to recognise how the metal industries can contribute recycling and waste minimisation.

Diversity is a key strength for Western Mining Corporation. An international corporation with assets of about $A10 billion, WMC is engaged in both mining and downstream processing of minerals including nickel, gold, alumina, copper and talc, as well as having interests in oil and gas production and agricultural fertiliser. The company is focusing on several core commodities that will maintain its strength in the years ahead. Although most current mineral assets are within Australia, it plans to have 25 per cent of its operations off-shore by the turn of the century, and be a major producer in at least six core commodities. WMC's strategic and management focus has shifted from a regional approach to a commodity focus so that it can more readily cater for different markets with differing sensitivities. Mackenzie (1968, p. 167) inferred that amphibolitelayers grade into and may be correlated with footwall Potosi gneiss where it is thin under the thickest development of the "lead lode" in the New Broken Hill Consolidated mine, Broken Hill. This gradation from amphibolite to Potosi gneiss is tacitly assumed in many of the constructed crosssections of the southern end of the orebody, where amphibolite and Potosi gneiss, defined in hand specimen, are correlated in adjacent drill holes. Mineral sands make up only 3% of the value of mineral production in WA. However, the distribution of mining operations, close to the more highly populated south-west coastal areas, and the wide range of land-tenures and land-uses involved has resulted in the most complex range of regulatory procedures found anywhere in the State's mining industry.Mineral sands are mined on private agricultural and "minerals-to-owner" land, State forests, nature reserves, coastal reserves and vacant Crown land. Local Government authorities, State Government departments and private landholders can, depending on the land tenure, be involved in setting the environmental conditions for mining operations and supervising subsequent rehabilitation. In the past, rehabilitation was predominantly aimed at establishing an agricultural land-use after mining; however, it is now necessary for mining companies to rehabilitate mined areas to a much wider range of end land-uses.

The Metropolitan Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) Initial System Project (ISP) - Underground Structures North, UGN, is the northern section of the blue line, which is the first stage of an underground mass transport rail system of 77 km to be implemented in the central area of Bangkok, Thailand. The UGN section (Huai Kwang - Bang Sue) consists of approximately 8 km of twin single track bored tunnels, nine underground stations and some short cut and cover tunnel sections. The paper focuses on the main issues involved in the structural design of the precast concrete lining, which is the definitive structural support of the bored tunnels. It includes an overview of the site and geotechnical conditions, specific properties of precast concrete linings, ground-structure modelling, approach for the assessment of load conditions and respective sectional forces and particulars of the detailing of the reinforcement and the segment testing program.

Benchmarking of mining operations has been in vogue for a number of years: it seems teams are forever flying around the world to try to understand what other operations are doing. However, unless a benchmarking exercise involves data gathering at a fundamental level and a rigorous analysis process is applied, the trip will be nothing more than industrial tourism. When benchmarking is performed thoroughly, the range of comparisons that can be made is extensive and informative, and need not be restricted to sites with similar conditions and equipment fleets. This paper describes the detailed and rigorous process for benchmarking used throughout AMC benchmarking studies. The paper demonstrates how, through drilling down to the underlying drivers, the often heard cry of æyou canÆt compare us, weÆre differentÆ can be overcome. Included in the discussion are a number of significant issues that have been identified during AMC benchmarking studies. The paper then considers the types of opportunities that have been identified and the potential for improvement. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications for planning, measuring and management of operational performance.

Acceptable post-closure performance of decommissioned mining operations is a critical factor in persuading todayÆs environmentally conscious public that the mining industry will not continue to burden future generations with the legacy of environmental tragedies. Post-closure impacts must be identified and managed through robust engineering design if the post-closure environment is to be environmentally sustainable. To manage potential post-closure risks (environmental, health, safety, social and economic) within acceptable limits, WMC incorporates a risk-based approach to closure planning and engineering design. WMCÆs risk-based closure engineering design process provides a simple methodology for developing robust closure plans û the process æengineers outÆ unacceptable risks and æengineers inÆ a sustainable post-closure environment. Benefits of the risk-based process include stakeholder endorsed closure criteria for an agreed post-closure land-use, focusing of resources on major risks, and a realistic and accurate estimate of the required closure provision. The outcome is an increased likelihood of satisfying the three pillar goals of sustainable development û a financially sound solution that poses a low risk to the environment and future generations.

ZC Mines investigated a proposal to replace the present underground train haulage system with rear dump trucks. The number of rear dump trucks required to achieve target output and the required mix of trains and trucks during the changeover was of importance to the designers, and a GPSS computer simulation model of the operation was constructed using GPSS/PC, a recent form of the language for the personal computer. Three models were 'constructed to simulate initial and final configurations of underground haulage systems to transport ore from ore passes to the crusher and then to the skip for transport to the surface. The initial model simulated train operation on two levels and rear dump truck operation on a third level. The second model simulated rear dump truck operation on two levels with ore being loaded through the crusher to the skip as in the previous case. The third model replaced the rear dump trucks on the lower level with a train to establish the relative merits of the two methods of transport. The simulations identified equipment numbers, required operating hours and critical points in the operation which can then be addressed by the mine designers.

Traditionally, the term ætotal systemÆ design applied to comminution conjures images of a design that addresses the usual business and operational drivers, including health, safety and environment (HSE), capital cost, operating cost, throughput and product size. In terms of the physical process, the mine to customer type studies also exemplifies an approach that satisfies a normal ætotal systemsÆ approach. As an industry there are drivers that are forcing a re-consideration of what we regard as our total system. This modification of drivers will require changes in approach and implementation to provide the best solutions. Some of the major changes that impact the drivers are shortage of skilled personnel, changing social attitudes to remote mine site work, greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE), quality of available orebodies and geographical location of new mine sites. One approach to the challenges presented by the changing business environment is to expand the system envelope around comminution to ensure that comminution, in its widest sense, helps to meet the new realities. Background to the new drivers and constraints is provided and some of the appropriate responses are examined in relation to the impact on the total system.

The South Middleback Ranges (SMR) operation involves the develop- ment of iron ore resources at the Iron Duke mine in the South Middle- back Ranges to replace the Iron Baron mine whose reserves are nearing depletion. The Iron Duke mine will be developed by contract to the stage where it can continue operation at full production when Iron Baron is closed. As part of the mine planning of the operation a GPSS computer simulation model was written to determine equipment requirements. The model simulated the operation of the mine with trucks transporting ore and waste to the appropriate destinations and producing a blended product in the stockpiles. A loader and two trucks would transport ore from the stockpiles to the crusher for one shift per day. The simulation shut the operation down at crib, morning tea, shift change and weekends, and also on the third shift each day. It also modelled operating delays. The results gave equipment operating hours and total output of each material type. The model was modified to produce different outputs from the mine and could be used to determine the most productive shift arrangement.

The integration of historic exploration geoscientific data with high precision multi-element and isotope geochemistry can provide explorers fundamental information on mineral potentiality, tectonic setting, source signatures, fluid migration, mineralisation environment and the timing of mineralising events. Stope control information at the C.S.A. mine is obtained by diamond drilling inclined holes from within the stapes. Practical mining outlines are determined from complicated ore contours by a joint mining engineering and geological study. Production holes to achieve this outline are individually marked up and checked. Stope control also extends to selective mucking of ore mixtures for metallurgical reasons and to marginal ore and waste mixtures for economic reasons.

The Adavale Basin and Warrabin Trough are remnants of a much more extensive Devonian to Carboniferous depression which evolved through four tectonic stages; an initial period of rifting and three periods of foreland thrusting, which cannibalized much of the earlier depression. The Basin has subsequently been buried by sediments of the Galilee and Eromanga Basins.The Basin was initiated during the Early Devonian when the earlier cratonized Thompson Foldbelt rifted away to form a marginal sea comparable to the South China sea. This crustal extension was probably in a Northeast-Southwest direction. These initial rifts were the site of acid volcanism (Gumbarbo Formation) and later, deltaic and shallow marine facies (Eastwood Beds).

Spectacular high-temperature hot springs (æblack smokersÆ) on the deep ocean floor are producing economic concentrations of base and precious metals. Mining these seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits is about to become a reality in 2010, subject to the timely issuance of permits. Three Australia-based private companies and two government agencies inJapan and Korea have exploration licenses or applications covering vast areas of the seabed in the western Pacific targeting SMS deposits. Technological and financial challenges for recovery of seafloor sulfide deposits are being met and mining these may be less environmentally deleterious than mining on land. A report is given of the problems of finance and physical resources that currently affect The University of New South Wales, and of some of the measures adopted to alleviate them. Partly as' a result of review procedures, a School of Mines was formed to amalgamate Applied Geology and Mining Engineering, and to add the skills of extractive metallurgy to produce a group to match the needs of the minerals industry. A review of courses within the School indicated a need for enhanced computer teaching, which is partially negated by a lack of resources. It also shows an overcrowded course whose structure could possibly benefit from a split into managerial and specialist streams.

The annual growth in lead consumption in the Western world has declined sharply in the past ten years, as lead has suffered a wave of substitution by other materials, and has also been the object of concern about its toxicity in daily applications. Like most metal industries, the lead industry has tended to be more production-oriented than market-oriented than is the case with some of its competitors. However, in recent times this pessimism and preoccupation with weathering the threats from environmental legislation, substitution and low prices appears to have been replaced with a new optimism in some sectors of the industry. This is indicated by renewed promotional activities and efforts to find more applications and market opportunities.
