Grain boundary characteristics and microstructural evolution are analyzed in a comparative study using orientation imaging microscopy (OIM/SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM/SAD). The subgrain sizes and misorientations were determined by the OIM for aluminum deformed in torsion to equivalent strains between 0.2 and 4 over the temperature ranges of300-600°C and strain rates 0.01-1 s". The OIM gives clearer evidence of boundaries with high misorientation than does TEM, but it overestimates their frequency b y missing boundaries less than 1 0. T EM more clearly reveals low-angle arrays of widely spaced dislocations resulting in finer subgrain sizes than those indicated by OIM. The evidence supports a mechanism combining dynamic recovery (DRY), deformation band formation with permanent boundaries and geometric dynamic recrystallization (gDRX) in contrast to the hypothesis known as continuous dynamic recrystallization (cDRX).

"Abstract-The Orion gold mine, located 7 km northeast of the town of Malartic, Quebec, was discovered in mid-1985. Underground exploration was undertaken in 1986Ieading to commercial production in 1988. The upper part of the orebody was exploited above the 125 m level and a total of 131 090 t at an average grade of 5.31 g/t gold were extracted.This paper describes the authors' current knowledge and interpretation of the geology, gold distribution, and structure of the Orion No. 8 ore zone deposit. The deposit is an epigenetic lode gold occurrence somewhat unique in that both quartz-vein type and pyritic type of gold ore occur side-by-side. It is located within the Marban-Norlartic Deformation Corridor (MNDC) formed during a first deformation stage (D1). The MNDC is a well-defined regional structural feature in the Val d'Or- Malartic mining camp. Primary gold mineralization is associated with the D1 event and is represented by pyritized , silicified and brecciated basaltic lavas enclosed by ultramafic flow units. The ore zone is concordant with the MNDC. Felsic intrusions are spatially related with the ore zone, but their role in the genesis of the ore has yet to be defined.A second deformation event (D2) resulted in local folding, a second schistosity (S2) and reverse faulting. Gold remobilization, the formation of the gold-bearing quartz breccia and the emplacement of the main quartz vein at the No . 8 zone deposit were associated with this event."

THE most useful guide to the role of lime in flotation is the view that the chemistry of any flotation operation is primarily a pattern in relative solubilities. We have the coming together of a number of minerals, reagents, fortuitous salts, water, and oxygen, many of which have not been previously in contact with each other, and every one of which is free, at least to some extent, to abandon old alliances and to form new ones. Of one thing the operator may be sure, and that is that, when equilibrium has been reached, those new chemical combinations will have formed which are the least soluble combinations possible to the environment. The laws of solution govern the operation, which means that relative concentrations are always a factor, and temperature frequently is. What the operator is really doing when he chooses his reagents .in the first place (empirically or otherwise) and works out their? optimum amounts, is to provide an environment in which (1) the least soluble possible compound of the mineral he desires to float is one which is also non-wettable, while at the same time (2) the least soluble compounds possible to the minerals he desires to depress are wettable. Since all metathesis is reversible, perfection is impossible to achieve, and the operator is constantly striving to establish that combination of concentrations which will drive each and every particular reaction as far as possible in the direction he desires it to go, in accordance with the law of molar concentration.

ONE of the reasons advanced for the decline in prospecting and discovery is that, as regards surficial examination, the law of diminishing returns is becoming applicable. Fewer surficially unprospected fields remain; therefore, fewer discoveries by such means result. Much in the nature of mineral resources remains to be unearthed, but even now, and more so in the future, will discovery depend on painstaking petrographic and structural mapping, aided, where necessary, by judicious applications of all the complementary scientific knowledge and devices (e.g., thin section microscopy, geophysics, and drilling) that experience proves effective in localizing a mineral deposit even beneath drift, lake, or muskeg. It is to be expected, then, that the rate of discovery will decrease, that the cost per discovery will greatly increase, and that the work of discovery will become more and more the careful, methodical assembling of field data, conscientiously interpreted on the basis of scientific knowledge by trained, experienced operatives. In view of these trends, the status of applied geophysics to Canadian mining exploration and development work might well be reviewed. The niche which geophysics may occupy relative to geological surveying and drilling has been clarified by the last twenty years' experience. The cloud of somewhat justifiable scepticism that followed the 'geophysical promotion' period of the late 1920's has lifted. Mining, exploration, and finance companies, in open-minded fashion, are seeking sound advice as to what are the scope and limitations of the geophysical methods at present practised. The purpose of this paper and the following one is, therefore, as far as lies within the author's power, to review briefly the geophysical methods at present in practice in Canada, and, at greater length, to joint out impartially and critically their scope, merits, shortcomings, an possible future development. The treatment will be non-technical, the hope being that an accurate statement of the present status of geophysics in Canada may do much to result in a sounder, saner growth of what, in the future, shall undoubted} y prove an increasingly useful tool in exploration and development work. ?

"Industry practice for high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) assessment and sizing relies on tests using pilot-scale machines with 0.7–1.0 m roll diameters. Typically 1–10 t of sample are required, depending on the level of study and resource complexity. This is challenging during early-stage development, which hinders incorporating HPGR into designs. With support from the Canadian Mining Industry Research Organization, researchers at the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering at The University of British Columbia developed bench-scale piston–die press tests (PPTs) that correlate to pilot- and full-scale HPGRs. This paper describes a new regression model to estimate the HPGR-specific throughput rate using both PPT results and an HPGR database. "The 1994 Quebec Budget included a significant overhaul of the mining duties sys-tem in that province: broadening the base and lowering the rate, all in the name of “ensuring the integrity of the taxation system"" and ""enabling the State to collect fair compensation "". The reforms hit hardest on the small, lightly-capitalized producer, by repealing the basic annual exemption, limiting the refund for losses, and significantly reducing the investment and processing allowances. For those people living next to a mine, there is the additional concern that mining has or will affect their water well supplies. "The copper property of Madeleine Mines Ltd. is in Lapotardiere and Boisbuisson townships, Gaspe North. The initial find was made in 1964, and subsequently a copper deposit of 5.3 million tons of ore was outlined. The property lies in Ordovician sedimentary and volcanic rocks near the major granite intrusive of the McGerrigle Range. The host-rock is a 300-foot-thick metamorphosed silty shale unit, close to the contact of the intrusive. The structure itself coµsists of a southerly-dipping monocline or the south limb of an anticline, on which a large dragfold has been imposed.Chalcopyrite, bornite and chalcocite are the principal sulphides present in the ore. Of particular interest is the zoning arrangement of these sulphides. The orebody is chimney-like in shape and appears to be a fracture-filling deposit that is genetically related to the granite intrusive and is confined within a highly fractured zone of very brittle rock. The deposit presents features uncommon to any of the other known copper deposits in the Gaspe Peninsula."

"Throughout the years Cyanamid has been a supplier of cyanide and a supplier of information to the mining industry. In general, the knowledge of mineralogy is greatly overlooked. Mineral deposits in the Western hemisphere have been exceedingly rich in the past but now they are becoming poorer. In other words, we will have to use our talents to the utmost to extract the precious metals and base metals from these ores. Modifications of some of the mineralogical equipment displayed here belong in the mill.Cyanidation of copper has been one of the main projects in our labs in recent years. De-rimming or de-filming of copper in order to upgrade copper concentrate was the main aspect investigated. A study was made as to how wide spread was the filming of secondary copper on pyrite, and to what extent it affected the copper industry. It was very wide.Often there is no conception as to what the minerals are. One open pit copper producer with a chalcopyrite ore was producing a copper concentrate with a 5% copper value whereas chalcopyrite contains 35% copper. They used primary and secondary grinding and a regrinding section. The ore contained about 8 parts chalcopyrite to one part of other copper minerals. In tests, a 3 1/ 2% copper rougher concentrate, cleaned without regrinding but conditioned with cyanide for a low contact time of 30 seconds produced a 30% copper concentrate with 90% recovery by removal of the film. It was of utmost importance that some quantitative mineralogical analysis be made before flow sheet changes were made. Every man should be trained to do his own microscopic examination in order to get quick answers. The fundamental thing in all mineral dressing is to first of all know the minerals and the mineral associations."

IN THE operation of most mines, hoisting ropes, made of steel, play a very important part in the conveying of men and material between surface and the underground workings. It is obvious that, in order to maintain a maximum degree of safety, certain restrictions must be placed on the loads that may be carried by hoisting ropes, as well as on other factors that may affect the life of the rope. It is the purpose of this paper to suggest ?a new method of defining the necessary restrictions. The three main stresses in a hoisting rope are the static stress, bending stress, and dynamic stress. Crushing stresses, which are also present, are largely indeterminate and may best be allowed for by proper grooving of drum and sheaves, by adequate inspection of cross-over points, and by limiting the number of layers on the drum. They will, therefore, not be considered in this analysis. In the ?recent Ontario regulations, the limiting conditions for the main stresses are specified separately. The static stress is limited by setting a minimum static safety factor of 5.0 The dynamic stresses are allowed for by specifying a minimum capacity factor of 8.5, which has the effect of increasing the safety factor required at smaller depths in a uniform manner. The bending stresses are limited by calling for a drum-dia./rope-dia. ratio of at least 60 for ropes up to 1 inch in diameter and 80 for ropes greater than 1 inch in diameter. One disadvantage of this method is that the controls are too rigid and do not allow the operator sufficient freedom of action within safe limits.

In this work the extractive and selective capacities of solvent extraction synergistic systems to recover nickel and cobalt were evaluated. The liquor used was from the high pressure acid leaching process (HPAL). Initially the industrial liquor, processed from lateritic ores, was analyzed to identify the concentrations of the metals. Experiments of synergistic solvent extraction were performed later. The extraction liquid-liquid was carried out with a mixture of Cyanex 272 (CY) and Ionquest 290 (IQ) extractants. The process was executed with the temperature of 65 ºC, pH of 5.2 and the ratio aqueousorganic 2:1. Systems of 80% kerosene and CY 20%, CY 16% - IQ 4%, CY 12% - IQ 8%, CY 8% - IQ 16%, CY 4% - IQ 16%, IQ 20% were studied during 20 minutes. The results of this paper showed that the mixture of these two extractants doesn’t improve significantly the recovery of nickel and cobalt from liquor.

"In this study, laboratory flow tests were conducted on 2-D artificial rock fracture network models containing a single intersection constituted by two inlet and two outlet branches. Three models with different intersecting angles of 60°, 90° and 120° were tested using both dye solution and distilled water. Constant flow rates were imposed on one inlet, and the flow patterns in the fracture intersections were captured by using a CCD camera. The test results were compared with the predictions made by numerical simulations that solved the Navier-Stokes equations. The results revealed that when Reynolds number (Re) is as low as less than 1, the intersecting angle has negligible influence on the flow rate of each branch and the flow patterns within a fracture intersection. As the interesting angle ? and Re (e.g., from 10 to 200) change, the normalized flow rates of different outlet branches change significantly, due to the inertial effect of fluid flow. These changes could be represented by a series of mathematical expressions involving Re and ?, which could be applied to fracture network models to improve their prediction accuracy on hydraulic properties (e.g., permeability and breakthrough curves of particles) of rock masses. INTRODUCTIONCoupled stress, flow, heat and mass transport are the corner stone subjects for many geoscience and geo-engineering disciplines, such as geological disposal of radioactive waste and geothermal energy exploitation. Many outstanding issues need to be investigated to enhance the knowledge on these subjects, and specifically more in-depth research in testing and modeling of the fluid flow in fractured rock masses is needed. In recent years, discrete fracture network (DFN) models have been extensively used to study the fluid flow and mass transport behaviors of fractured rock masses (e.g., Min et al., 2004; Zhao et al., 2011). In these models, each fracture is usually represented by a parallel-plate model, in which fluid flow exactly follows the cubic law. Therefore, comparative flow rate in each outlet branch of an intersection in these models only depends on its aperture. In reality, due to the surface roughness of fractures, the magnitude of mechanical aperture is usually larger than that of the hydraulic aperture of each fracture (Li et al., 2008; Xiong et al., 2011), and abundant flow patterns could exist in an intersection, influenced by its geometry, varying with changing Reynolds number (Re) (Kosakoswski & Berkowitz, 1999). Recent studies have also revealed that different mixing patterns might exist at a fracture intersection, bounded between streamline routing model and complete mixing model, that determine the final distribution of solutes in fractured rock masses (Johnson and Brown, 2001; Park et al., 2001). Numerical simulation has been the principal method adopted in previous studies, and the studies conducting flow tests on intersected fractures are less reported (Wilson & Witherspoon, 1976; Johnson and Brown, 2001). In this study, laboratory flow tests and numerical simulations by solving the Navier-Stokes equations were conducted on 2-D models containing a single intersection constituted by two inlet and two outlet branches, intersected at different angles. The main objective is to study the influence of intersecting angle on the flow behavior of the intersected fractures and the variations of flow patterns and fluid redistribution in each model along with the changes of the Re and the intersecting angle ?. The influence of surface roughness was not considered."

Barrick Gold Corporation?s wholly owned subsidiary, Barrick (Granny Smith) Pty. Ltd. operates the Granny Smith operation in Western Australia and has been operating a SAG/ball mill (SABC) circuit for a number of years processing a blend of secondary crushed, open pit and underground material. With closure of the open pit in 2008, Granny Smith was considering different options to process underground only material at a lower throughput. Using the existing equipment available on site, a number of circuits were evaluated by Metso Process Technology & Innovation (PTI) through modelling and simulation. A single stage SAG mill circuit was selected based on power requirements and operating efficiency. In April 2008, Granny Smith started operating their SAG mill in single stage, processing primary crushed feed and using their existing pebble crusher for scats. Smaller cyclones were used to control the final grind size. PTI surveyed the new single stage circuit in July 2008 under normal and high rock load conditions to show the effect on final grind size. Granny Smith continued to operate this circuit until the end of 2009, when alternate feed sources resulted in a return to the complete SABC circuit at a higher tonnage once again. The variable speed, single stage SAG mill proved itself to be very efficient and flexible option to process the hard underground Wallaby Deeps material. This paper will review circuit performance following the conversion to single stage in comparison with the full SABC circuit.

"Detection of outliers is an important primary step in geomodelling. Geological datasets often contain errors due to problems such as measurement device limitations and recording glitches. In this paper, a robust Mahalanobis distance–based approach is successfully applied to particle size distributions of the Joslyn lease, an oil sands development site near Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. Automatic outlier detection and geological review were combined. Outliers from the Mahalanobis distance approach were compared with their respective core photographs to determine if laboratory measurements and facies classification were correct. A checking procedure for laboratory technicians is proposed.RÉSUMÉ La détection des valeurs aberrantes constitue une étape primaire importante de la modélisation géologique. Les ensembles de données géologiques contiennent souvent des erreurs en raison de problèmes tels que les limitations des instruments de mesure et des pépins d’enregistrement. Dans le présent article, une méthode robuste basée sur la distance de Mahalanobis a été mise en oeuvre avec succès aux granulométries du bail minier Joslyn, un site de sables bitumineux en développement à proximité de Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. La détection automatique des valeurs aberrantes a été combinée à une étude géologique. Les valeurs aberrantes de la méthode de la distance de Manalanobis ont été comparées avec leurs photographies respectives de carottes de forage afin de déterminer si les mesures en laboratoire et la classification des faciès étaient correctes. Une procédure de vérification pour les techniciens de laboratoire est proposée."

Passive monitoring of support performance during rockbursts was conducted at three deep underground mines. A comprehensive database was constructed of 172 seismic events and the associated damage to support systems at 266 mine locations from January 2000 to September 2012. The majority of pertinent information was obtained through seismic system records and on-site field assessments. This work assesses the quality of collected information and evaluates the dynamic-load demand on support systems in seismically active mines.

The base of the biozone of Olenellus is accepted as the most universally applicable criterion for defining the base of the Cambrian System. The use of this definitive criterion is restricted by important practical considerations. In the southeastern Canadian Cordillera this zone appears to truncate the basal ortho-quartzite of a west to east marine -transgression. This transgression began in Interior British Columbia in the Late Proterozoic and terminated in the region of the present Rockies in the Late Waucobian. Most of the material deposited by the transgressing sea originated in the eastern positive element 'Laurentia' and was transported over the intervening low Proterozoic-Windermere erosion surface. The configuration of the advancing shoreline and the distribution of the sediments were controlled by the tectonic activity of positive elements in northwestern Montana (Montania) and in the Fairmont Hot Springs-Radium area of British Columbia.

"Chah-Palang tungsten deposit is one of the two tungsten indexes in Iran. Based on ore characterization techniques (including optical mineralogy and XRD analysis), quartz, chlorite, atacamite, azurite, malachite, ferberite, illite, goethite and calcite were distinguished as major minerals. The representative sample was analyzed qualitatively by using X-ray fluorescence and chemical assay. Results showed that grade of tungsten oxide and copper were 1.76 and 7%, respectively. Also precious metals such as gold with grade of 1 ppm was reported in the sample. By using the mineralogical studies on the prepared sample, the liberation degree of tungsten minerals in –0.6 mm size fraction was obtained 80%. Several tabling tests were carried out on the original sample which at the optimum conditions and as a result, the grade and recovery of tungsten in concentrate reached to proximately 23 and 59%, respectively. To increase the grade of tungsten in the final concentrate, acidic leaching were performed on the tabling concentrate and its appropriate results indicated that the grade of tungsten increased to 27%. Also more than 90% of copper was extracted as a byproduct in the fallowed process.INTRODUCTIONTungsten, a unique hard, heavy heat-resistant metal, is distributed erratically in economic concentrations throughout most continents, occurring mostly as small irregular deposits that are not readily adaptable to large-scale, low-cost mining methods. The diverse physical characteristics and mineral composition of tungsten ores also present problems in beneficiation, requiring complex hydro- and pyrometallurgical treatment to yield high-purity concentrates suitable for the production of ferro alloys, carbides and super alloys in the steel industry (Hausen, 1989; Kholmogorov & Kononova, 2005). Tungsten is most frequently used as tungsten monocarbide, which has hardness close to diamond, in cemented carbides. The most well-known use of tungsten is in lighting filaments, and other important applications include improving steel properties and use in tungsten alloys, electronics, and chemical products (Hausen, 1989; Kholmogorov & Kononova, 2005)."

"Bentonite clay has been the most common binder for iron ore pellets. Although bentonite increases pellet strength and durability, it has several disadvantages. For example, its use increases the cost of pellets and decreases pellet purity due to its composition and the higher levels of flux required to meet basicity limits. Several new types of binders have been proposed to replace clay. The binders include starch, modified humic acid (MHA), and dispersants. These binders were used to pelletize a magnetite concentrate from the United States. Typical doses of each binder type were 0.05-0.1 % starch, 0.5-0.75 % MHA, and 0.05 % dispersant. At these doses, the pellets exceeded the minimum recommended values for wet drop, dry compression strength, and fired compression strength. Pellets made with the MHA and dispersants had the lowest abrasion rates of the new binders, and were comparable to pellets made with bentonite clay. In this paper, we compare the new binders, considering pellet quality and the advantages and disadvantages of each binder type.INTRODUCTIONIron ore pelletizers need binders in order to make good quality iron ore pellets. The typical binder is bentonite clay, an alumino-silicate material. Bentonite increases the ballability and strength of iron ore concentrates, but reduces pellet iron grade and reducibility. As high quality bentonites can be expensive to ship, low quality bentonites are often used at significantly higher doses – this reduces iron grade and reducibility even further. Thus, several new types of binders have been proposed to replace bentonite clay.In this paper, we present several new binders for iron ore pellets: starch and modified humic acid (MHA). The theory of atomic distribution of the stranger atoms in the space lattice of the solvent metal has been well developed by Rosenhain. It has long been known that the addition of one metal to another to form a solid solution increases the strength and hardness of the solvent metal. This increase is practically proportional to the amount of added substance up to the limit of solid solubility. To account for this increase in hardness and strength, Rosenhain assumes that the stranger atoms occupy positions on the solvent metal space lattice. Atomic attractions about the stranger atoms will not be the same as in the case of the pure metal, and there will thus be a disturbance of the orderly arrangement of the atoms on the space lattice, or a distortion of the lattice. Such a disturbance would interfere with the ease of slip along the planes and would thus tend to promote strength and hardness. Rosenhain notes that not only may there be a local disturbance of the lattice about the stranger atom but there may well be also a measurable change in the dimensions of the lattice as a whole. The relative amounts of local and general distortion of the lattice will depend upon the nature of the lattice itself. As Rosenhain says, "If the lattice is comparatively soft and flexible the distortion is likely to be largely local. In a stiff lattice, however, local distortion will be resisted and there will be a correspondingly increased general distortion."
