"A mineral processing investigation to recover chromite was performed at Lakefield Research, under the guidance of CANMET personnel, on a 70 tonne ore sample from the Bird River deposit in Manitoba. In the laboratory phase a flowsheet was developed which involved grinding, gravity separation and flotation. The gravity concentrates were upgraded by magnetic separation and the flotation concentrates by gravity concentration. Pre-concentration by electronic ore sorting, magnetic separation and heavy media separation also was examined.The developed flowsheet was applied on a pilot-plant scale in the second phase of the testwork to the ore as received, and to ore pre-concentrated by electronic ore sorting and magnetic separation. Ore pre-concentrated by heavy-media separation was treated on a laboratory scale based on the pilot-plant flowsheet.Processing the are as received resulted in 77% recovery of chromite in a concentrate analyzing 30% Cr20 J; processing are pre-concentrated by electronic are sorting resulted in 64% recovery of chromite in a concentrate analyzing 30.5% Cr20J.IntroductionA five-year mineral development sub-agreement was signed between the federal government and the province of Manitoba in 1984. The purpose of the agreement was to establish a work program which would strengthen and diversify the mineral resource industry of Manitoba. Basically, the agreement covers three sectors: Sector A, geoscience; Sector B, mining and minerals technology research; and Sector C, development studies.Project selection involved input from industry, federal and provincial representatives. In the case of industrial mineral s, the selection was initiated at a meeting held at the offices of the Department of Mines and Energy, Winnipeg, Manitoba, in October 1985. Sulfate-reducing passive bioreactors efficiently treat acid mine drainage (AMD) by increasing its pH and alkalinity and by removing metals as sulfide precipitates, in addition to hydroxides and carbonates. However, the new mining legislation sets discharge limits based on physicochemical parameters and on the non-toxicity of treated effluent as well. In this study, toxicity was assessed for effluent from 3.5 L column bioreactors filled with mixtures of natural organic carbon sources and operated at two different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 7.3 d and 10 d for the treatment of a highly contaminated AMD. Acute toxicity was observed for D. magna, and a toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) procedure was performed to identify potential toxicants. To help the interpretation of the toxicity results, metal partition in the effluent was also determined by filtration and ultrafiltration, while geochemical modeling was performed for metal speciation evaluation. The 10 d HRT effluent was nonacutely lethal for rainbow trout but acutely lethal for D. magna, whereas the 7.3 d HRT effluent was toxic for both organisms. The toxicity to D. magna was eliminated by 2 h of aeration for the 10 d HRT effluent, and the TIE procedure suggested iron as a cause of toxicity. However, the 2 h aeration eliminated the toxicity of the 7.3 d HRT effluent, only if performed after the pH rising to 9.3. Data regarding metal speciation indicated instability of both effluents during aeration and were consistent with the toxicity being caused by iron. The study indicates that design of passive treatment should include sufficient HRT and posttreatment aeration to meet acute toxicity requirements. "The binary Fe53Mo47 and ternary Fe54Mo30P16 coatings have been electrodeposited from citrate-based electrolyte on mild steel (MS) substrates. The electrodeposition has been conducted for 6 hours at 20 mA cm-2 and 30°C. The electrochemical tests were carried out in chlorate solutions containing 300 g L-1 NaCl and 4 g L-1 K2Cr2O7 at pH 6.4 and 80°C. A number of surface characterization techniques such as SEM-EDS, XRD and EMP were used to study the microstructure of the alloys. The electrocatalytic activity of these coatings was investigated using steady-state polarization and galvanostatic technique. This study revealed that the Fe-Mo-P coating could be considered as a promising cathode material for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The results showed an important decrease of hydrogen overpotential for Fe-Mo-P alloy as compared to that of Fe-Mo and especially MS which is a traditional cathode in chlorate industry. The HER overpotential for Fe54Mo30P16 at current density of 250 mA cm-2 was decreased by 30% in comparison to that of MS (1029 mV), and by 16.5% to that of Fe53Mo47 coating (857 mV).INTRODUCTIONSodium chlorate is used for manufacturing of several daily consumption products. This chemical is mainly employed for the production of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) that is a bleaching agent used in the pulp and paper industry. The ClO2 is also consumed for generation of perchlorates, chlorites and other chlorates, as an herbicide and in uranium processing (Cornell, 2002). "Hydrometallurgy of copper ores typically involve acid leaching followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW). EW is the final purification stage in which a voltage is applied across two electrodes causing the copper ions to reduce and deposit on the cathode. Applied voltages are near 2 volts with current densities around 300 amps/m2. In this study, research was undertaken to decrease the energy consumed in the EW process. To do this, various cell designs were constructed and tested in which a membrane was used to separate the cathode and anode compartments with concentrated solution from SX serving as catholyte and raffinate from SX serving as anolyte. Therefore, copper in the concentrated solution would be deposited on the cathode while ferrous in the raffinate would be oxidized to ferric at the anode. Because it is assumed that ferric acid leaching is used, resulting ferric would be recycled to the leaching process. A positive side effect of the envisioned process would be the elimination of oxygen evolution at the anode and thus the prevention of acid-misting. After a cell design was selected, it was used to test a number of variables: flowrate, concentration, temperature, ion-exchange membrane, and applied voltage. Following experiments in which variable ranges were determined, statistical modeling was conducted using STATEASE software. Optimal results indicate the voltage can be decreased to 1.5-1.7 volts with current densities of 300-400 amps/m2. Significant reduction in the energy consumption was accomplished by reducing the applied voltage. Furthermore, current efficiencies and copper production rates was increased by application of the membrane.INTRODUCTIONLeaching of copper ores is achieved using mostly sulfuric acid. "IntroductionThe stages of development for bringing a mill into production demand that a flowsheet for the process be developed at an early stage. Detailed engineering of the mill may then proceed without duplication of engineering effort on alternative processes. In the case of gold and silver mills, several process alternatives exist which must be evaluated before the flowsheet is finally fixed. The recently developed Carbon-in-Pulp process has added to this choice.Clearly, the major factor in determining the most suitable process is the amenability of the particular ore to a given treatment. Other factors that will also influence the choice are location, climate, power and water supplies, and available capital.Gold and silver milling processes can be divided into three main types:Gravity Concentration;Flotation;Cyanidation.Combinations of the three are frequently used; i.e. flotation followed by cyanidation of the concentrate, or gravity concentration in the grinding circuit with cyanidation of the classifier overflow. The following are the salient advantages and disadvantages of the three main alternatives.Gravity ConcentrationGravity concentration is suitable for free-milling gold ores, i.e. ores in which the gold is relatively coarse and free from sulphides. It should be noted that just because an ore is high grade, it is not necessarily free milling.Gravity concentration methods include jigs, shaking tables, spirals and more recently Reichert cone concentrators. All methods exploit the density difference between gold, which has a specific gravity greater than 15, depending on how it is alloyed, and the gangue, which usually has a specific gravity range of 2.7 to 3.5.A concentrate grade of several hundred ounces per ton might be produced, but recoveries by gravity alone are generally low in comparison to other methods. For this reason, gravity circuits are usually used in combination with flotation or cyanidation circuits."

"This paper deals with the history, development, present and future of the Employee Assistance Programs in place at the Inco Ltd. operations in Thompson, Manitoba. It should be noted that, although many similar programs exist in various industries and jurisdictions, these programs had to be fine-tuned to meet the needs of Inco employees, having in mind the helping professional resources available in Thompson and its geographic location. IntroductionIn the late 70s, many Canadian industries and the Canadian Labour Congress and their affiliates commenced discussions on the value of the Employee Assistance Program (E .A.P.) philosophy to both management and labour.In the contract signed between Inco Ltd., Manitoba Division and Local 6166, U.S.W .A. in 1981, a commitment was made to establish a joint E.A.P. for the hourly workforce in Thompson, Manitoba. With this background and sequence of events in mind, it is appropriate to explain the methodology and the steps that were taken for the implementation of the hourly program. Development of Hourly ProgramIt was agreed by the company and the union that the committee to develop the program should consist of equal numbers from both sides: three active union members plus an advisor representing the Union and three supervisory personnel plus an advisor representing the Company; in addition, a person familiar with E.A.P.s from the Alcoholism Foundation of Manitoba was to act as a facilitator. The Union appointed a social worker who was working as a counsellor for union members as their advisor , and the company appointed a staff employee who had worked voluntarily in the field of alcohol and drug abuse for many years. The makeup of the committee was extremely important in order to give credibility to the entire process. The makeup of the committee is shown in Table 1.The facilitator selected from the Alcoholism Foundation of Manitoba was well known in the community and highly respected in his profession."

"In bedded deposits such as coal or sedimentary iron, economic limits of mineable reserves are clearly defined by the footwall of the seams or ore-bearing units. Where open pits are developed in dipping strata, a long, high footwall slope may result. In many cases, unbenched slopes excavated along the base of the lowest mineable seam are operationally simple, economically desirable and geotechnicalty practical, although a variety of failure mechanisms may develop. This paper examines the engineering geology and rock mechanics parameters of importance in the design of footwall slopes. Possible failure mechanisms and stability analysis methods are described. Design considerations for benched and unbenched slopes are discussed with prime consideration given to development of long high stopes without benches or with a minimum number of benches. IntroductionIn bedded deposits, the ultimate depth and economic viability of an open pit in dipping strata may be controlled by the design of the footwall slope. The stability and, hence, design of footwall slopes is strongly influenced by the engineering geology and rock mechanics parameters of the slope forming materials. A clear understanding of the structural geology, engineering geology and tectonic history of the deposit is essential to assess the behaviour of the slope. This is particularly important for long high, unbenched footwall slopes such as shown in Photo I.A rational footwall slope design requires identification and assessment of all possible slope failure mechanisms with respect to the proposed slope geometry. Stability analyses of each potential failure mechanism are used to identify the main controls on slope stability and to develop appropriate slope design criteria. The optimum slope design is based on the most economic and geotechnically practical slope geometry with due consideration of operational constraints and of the possible advantages of specific remedial measures."

Shales and mudstones comprise about 75% of all the sedimentary rocks. In, particular, organic rich shales are considered as a petroleum source rock and more recently with the advent of hydraulic fracturing technology to be a reservoir in their own right. In this sense, the aforesaid motivates our work with laboratory measurements of elastic properties of these geologic materials, which are known to be anisotropic. As such, assuming Vertical Transverse Isotropy (VTI) symmetry, the dynamic and static moduli of a series of cores from various geological formations in Alberta, Canada are simultaneously investigated as a function of confining pressure using the ultrasonic pulse transmission method and strain gages. Dynamic moduli were obtained from ultrasonic P- and S-wave velocities measured on a prism cut with faces perpendicular, parallel and oblique to the assumed vertical axis of symmetry. Static moduli were calculated from strain-stress curves obtained along the directions perpendicular and parallel to the assumed axis of symmetry as well. Velocity measurements show that samples are highly anisotropic, but that the pressure-dependent behaviour of the wave speeds differs. VP(90°) and VSH(90°) both with layer parallel propagation and polarizations change little with pressure while VP(0°) and VS(0°) (both with layer perpendicular propagation) display significant nonlinear responses particularly at pressures < 25 MPa. These characters transfer to the derived full set of elastic constants. In order to effect a proper comparison of the dynamic and static moduli, we convert the dynamic elastic constanst to linear compressibilities pependicular (Kdyn1) and parallel (Kdyn3) which are directly comparable to the static tangent compressibiities obtained by differentiation of the observed strains. Both sets highlight the anisotorpic nature of the material but most interestingly Kdyn1 _ Ksta1 but Kdyn3 > Ksta3 by nearly 40% for one of the samples. The other samples measured respond similarly suggesting that conceptually the structure of such materials could be considered to be constructed of alternating stiff or compliant layers. This finding has implications in the response of the formation to stress particularly during hydraulic fracturing and the interpreation of acoustic logs in providing appropriate measures of elastic properties for engineering purposes.

"The Baker Mine used a 100-ton per day conventional cyanide leach mill located in northern British Columbia. A production decision was made in early 1980 and the mill was on fine in April 1981.Ore reserves had been estimated at 100,000 Ions averaging 0.9 oz gold per ton and 18 oz silver per ton . Mineralization consists of electrum (Au/Ag) and acanthite (Ag2S).This paper will review plant design and focus on some problems associated with start-up and early operation with the intention of assisting other mine operators by indicating potential problem areas.IntroductionThis paper will discuss operating strategies employed at Baker which improved over-all mill performance. Also included are some ideas which could be steps toward a more efficient operation in a similar setting.Actual dore production by mine life was 37,606 oz gold and 742,117 oz silver.Figure 1 illustrates the relative stability attained over the mine life. Metal recoveries for gold and silver were 92% and 85% respectively.Safety at Baker was of prime importance because of its remote location. Baker received the Mine Safety Association ""Small Mines Award "" in two of its three operating years. At shutdown in late 1983 the mill had operated for over 850 days without a lost-time accident."

"The advantages and disadvantages of a mobile crushing plant with a belt conveyor system compared to a stationary crushing plant with haulage by heavy trucks are described. The capital expenditure and operational expenses are compared and the individual cost factors are explained.Every open-pit mine or quarry, however, is different and has to be assessed and analyzed individually in order to find the optimum and most economical solution. Due to the high truck haulage costs, many open-pit mines tend to the more economical solution with mobile crushing plants and continuous belt conveyor operation. IntroductionFor the material haulage within an open-pit mine the heavy truck is the most flexible means of transportation. However, due to the high fuel consumption, wear and labour costs, it is also the most expensive one. Therefore, many open-pit mines are looking for alternative solutions for the material transport A mobile belt conveyor system is most likely to meet the requirements because it is efficient and economical with regard to the power consumption. The material , however, has to be crushed at the mining face to lumps which are suitable for conveyor operation. For this purpose a mobile crushing plant is required.In some open-pit mines the crusher is also used to crush the material to lumps of smaller particle sizes in order to save crushing costs in the preparation plant.Although a cost comparison between a system with stationary crusher and truck haulage and a system with mobile crusher and belt conveyors favours in most cases the belt conveyor system, up till now only a few open-pit mines and quarries benefit world-wide from the advantages of the mobile crushing plant with continuous belt conveyor operation."

Industrial complexes rely on measurements of flow rates, qualities, and concentrations for monitoring and optimizing their operation. Corporations use the data from the various sensors and measurements to make business decisions, which affect the profitability of the operation. However, gross errors, due to a variety of reasons like faulty sensors, bad instrument calibration, or incorrect process models may corrupt the actionable information supplied to operations, quality managers, and maintenance personnel. The solution is to use the sophisticated new tools to model the process, sift through the available data to locate the gross errors, and use statistical data reconciliation to validate the sensors and instruments. In this way the data are unified to give the most accurate plant information for use by the monitoring and decision making processes. Most mining and metallurgical plants use predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis and special techniques, like vibration analysis, and oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. Process control strategies are installed in several metallurgical sites. All of these depend on reliable and accurate data. The data unification methods validate the individual measurements by using the concept of balances and statistical techniques where each instrument is no longer independent of the other measurements in the facility. This paper refers to the data unification and analysis methods required for profitable plant operations. Continuous improvement and monitoring of the measurement system at the plant and analysis of the reconciled data provide the best information for the decision-making process. On-line gross error detection and elimination methods are required to ensure efficient evaluation of process performance and process optimization. An open discussion of the new methods for gross error detection and data unification will be presented.

Poland is rich in hard and brown coal reserves, which have become the most important, and steadily developing, primary source of energy. With 192.6 mill. t of hard coal production and 40 mill. t of exports in 1978, Poland is fourth and second in the world respectively. The paper discusses the various mining methods adopted in the country&apos;s history of mining. Particular emphasis is placed on longwails, their mechanization and equipment assembled in the form of fully mechanized face complexes suited for varied geological conditions. Measures to improve the recovery ratio of coal resources are dealt with. investment efforts undertaken in the coal industry are outlined. An account is given of the ever improving techno-economic results of coal mining. The country also exports a wide range of mining equipment and transfers its well-founded technical know-how to others. There are strong cooperative links with many foreign partners.

Grinding with an electrochemically inert grinding media (i.e. high chrome white iron, or Magotteaux’s Duromax® alloys) shifts the pulp potentials to more oxidising conditions, increases the dissolved oxygen content and reduces the EDTA extractable iron concentration when compared with milling with electrochemically active grinding media (forged steel). These changes in pulp chemistry produce cleaner particle surfaces, reduce reagent consumption and increase concentrate grades and recoveries. This paper presents a robust laboratory test program that is able to not only demonstrates these effects but also provide an indication of the magnitude of the improvements that are possible. While laboratory studies are interesting, the proof is in the pudding! So, the paper provides an overview of plant trials conducted at a number of operations around the world, including: Newcrest’s Cadia Operation, Oz Minerals’ Prominent Hill Mine and Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mine. These successful plant trials clearly demonstrate that selection of the right grinding media alloy will yield savings in grinding media consumption and reagent consumption as well as increases in revenue through improved copper, gold and molybdenum recoveries. INTRODUCTION The key to a successful separation in mineral processing is the preparation of particles with adequate liberation under the correct pulp chemical conditions. While the importance of liberation on flotation separations is generally understood and well documented in the literature (Johnson, 1987; Jackson, Sutherland, Gottlieb & Quittner, 1989; Young, Pease, Johnson, & Munro, 1997; Greet and Freeman, 2000), the importance of pulp chemistry is more nebulous, particularly with regard to the impact of grinding media. Extensive work examining the electrochemical interactions between grinding media and sulphide minerals has been completed (for example, Iwasaki, Reid, Lex & Smith, 1983; Natarajan and Iwasaki, 1984; Yelloji Rao and Natarajan, 1989(a); Yelloji Rao and Natarajan, 1989(b)). Broadly, these studies indicate that most sulphide minerals are more noble than the grinding media used during comminution, therefore a galvanic couple between the media and the sulphide mineral(s) exists, which increases the corrosion rate of the grinding media. The corrosion products of the grinding media, iron oxy-hydroxide species, invariably precipitate on to the surfaces of the sulphide minerals thereby affecting their floatability (Johnson, 2002).

Normally, the hydraulic system and structures are considered to be unrelated items. In reality, the two cannot be separated because one affects and depends on the other to function properly. This paper explores the potential failure areas of hydraulic cylinders, and suggests possible methods to prevent failures from occurring. The use of high-strength low-alloy steel in frames is reviewed and the benefits discussed. Fabrication techniques and handling of material are noted in the hope that this knowledge will aid in the repair of frames in the field.

"Tires, although not always the largest single cost item in open-pit mining operations, will place in the top three, along with explosives and fuel. How this high-cost supply is controlled is dependent upon on an efficient tire program. The success of this program is, in turn, dependent upon the people who are directly associated with tires and their use, namely: the mine&apos;s tire personnel, the tire sales representatives and a technician for the rubber company. The technician will relay his observations and information received from the mine personnel back to the manufacturer with recommendations to overcome current problems .Haulage truck tire life and costs in a hard rock open-pit mine are governed and controlled by four important factors:I) Field control.2) Operating within manufacturer&apos;s guidelines.3) Different tire purchasing methods.4) Scrap piles.Field ControlPerhaps the most influential people involved in this program are those who live with the tire through every hour of its lifespan: the truck driver, the shovel operator, the dozer operator, the grader operator and the shift boss. Of these, the truck driver has the most control, in that he can drive over or around rock s as these situations arise. The loading area, the edge of the haul road and the dump account for most of the tire injuries.This is why shovel, dozer and grader operators must appreciate their influence on haulage tire life. Spillage cleanup must be ongoing and is not being done adequately if any of these operators are idle. The shift boss that drives by a rock on the road without removing it or calling for a cleanup has little recourse with the truck driver who runs over it-he has sanctioned the driver&apos;s actions by his own neglect."

"Recent engineering advances in open pit rock mechanics have resulted in improved pit wall slope design and improved operating procedures in the event of a major wall instability. At the other end of the spectrum, on the scale of single bench failures, considerable discretion is left to the mine operators as to how potential problems are handled. The usual alternatives are either to operate with caution beneath potential hazards, or try to bring the unstable rock down. In specific cases it may be advantageous to attempt to stabilize rock structures for reasons of access and operating safety.A t the Brenda Mines open pit a prominent structure on the north wall had caused recurring bench-scale wedge failures when exposed on each mining level. In spite of operating precautions a shovel was hit by a rockfall causing significant damage. The first section of this paper describes the investigative, design, and stabilization methods which permitted subsequent mining beneath the structure to proceed without incident. Emphasis is placed on the personnel and equipment resources available at the mine site which were used to minimize costs and which would be available at most operating mines.The second section describes an ongoing research project that utilizes radio telemetry to transmit slope monitoring data. As part of this project the wedge structure was instrumented so that it could be continuously monitored with the aid of a computer. The application demonstrated the potential of &apos;micro- chip&apos; technology to remote data collection and processing as related to rock structure monitoring, slope stability and safety."

The choice of tool for the first well of an oilfield or gasfield is an important factor, given that we will be drilling with the same type of tool for the entire phase and explains why we need to have another type for comparison based on the efficiency of the tool and its ability to crush the rock, and the wear of different types of tools. Development of theoretical and practical tests to determine the optimal regime for drilling is required to take into account the characteristics of rock layers crossed. Classification of boring tools is based on the geometry of the teeth and depends on the hardness, the abrasiveness of rocks as well as their hydraulic system, but it is better to classify them according to the working conditions with a coefficient designating a discriminant. This is called physical characteristic of the drilling tool. The goal is to designate each element of the tool by a coefficient. Results were obtained from laboratory tests. Modeling the initial rate of progress by different types of tools allowed us to determine an adequate mathematical model of the speed initial progress in clean conditions. Using experimental data and statistics we have established the mathematical model of the average speed of progress as a function of time. With these equations we can determine the wear evaluation and analysis of these factors as an approach to classification according to their characteristics. The main equations for the selection of drilling tools will be based on the optimization of drilling parameters for each type of tool. After analysis, we choose the tool that gives a better forward speed with an optimal load and axial rotation.

"The objective of this paper is to describe the potential impact of inter-provincial competition f or new output capacity on the Canadian potash industry. It will be shown that the ramifications of such actions are potentially severe, especially since the potash industry is one of the few non-fuel minerals in which Canada purportedly possesses a significant degree of market power. More specifically, the paper addresses the impact of possible expansions in New Brunswick, Manitoba and, perhaps, Saskatchewan. "An LHD teleoperation and guidance system, developed at the Ontario Division of Inco Limited, has been demonstrated in operation at Copper Cliff North Mine (CCNM) since late September, 1993. The tests performed to date have evaluated the feasibility and production viability of multiple LHD operation, from surface by one operator.The systems technology required to accomplish this consists of an electronic monitoring and control package mounted on the LHD; a high bandwidth mining computer network capable of providing radio frequency coverage; and an operator control console which provides an operator workstation for multiple LHD operation.This paper discusses the systems required to accomplish the task of LHD teleoperation and guidance, the benefits of multiple machine operation and future research and development directions. IntroductionSince underground mining began, persolU1el have entered the mine workings to mine ore. Today, however, the rapid advancement of modem telecommunications, computer hardware and software technology has opened the door to remote mining technology that was considered unfeasible a few years ago. This paper discusses the ingredients of remote mining technology that have been developed at Inco Limited.Figure I represents an historical view of the application of electronics to LHD operation at Inco Limited. In 1980, the first radio remote controls for the operation of LI-IDs in large open stopes were tested. The successful application of this technology at Inco went hand-in-hand with the development and application of the Vertical Crater Retreat mining method. The combination of these two advances had a very positive effect on the productivity in the mid-eighties at Inco. In 1991, the Mines Research Department of the Ontario Division advanced remote control technology by developing a high capacity underground mining telecommunications system. This system is capable of moving voice, data and video information throughout the mine workings. The system is based on broadband communication technology found in most automated factories, with the added benefit of providing the information to and from mobile equipment through radio interfaces. The first test of the system consisted of an operator teleoperating a single LHD (on the 3000 ft level) from the surface. The next test on September 13, 1993, demonstrated the first production application of multiple LHDs being run from surface with a single operator."
